Nine Circles of Hell is Czech-cambodian film. The film describes the Khmer Rouge period in Cambodia. It tells story of Czech doctor Tomáš and his Khmer wife Khema.

- Batman Grabs a Gun: Tomáš states he will never carry a gun or use it but he changes his mind when he is attacked by Khmer Rouge soldiers and his companion is killed.
- Bittersweet Ending: Tomáš finds his daughter but Khema and most people he knew in Cambodia are dead.
- Death by Childbirth: Subverted, Khema survives but doctor who helped her is executed.
- Decoy Protagonist: Tomáš clearly starts as the protagonist but when Khmer Rouge takes over, he gets evacuated from Cambodia and the focus then skips to Khema.
- Redemption Equals Death: Khema's brother Chivan is a supporter of Khmer Rouge but he realizes how horrible the new regime is and stands up the regime. He is arrested, tortured and executed.
