* DyingToWakeUp:
** Dying in a dream instantly wakes Extractors up - either into reality or into the previous layer of dreams, depending on the heist. However, because dreams can be indistinguishable from reality, it's important to recognize the difference between the two before you try to awaken yourself, hence why Totems are so vital - and why you really shouldn't abandon them. In the past, losing touch with reality in this way resulted in tragedy when, after awakening after decades of [[YearInsideHourOutside subjective time]] in [[EldritchLocation Limbo]], Mal became convinced that her real life was a dream and jumped to her death in a delusional attempt to wake up.
** During the mission to Robert Fischer's mind, Cobb's team have been given a heavier dose of sedative to allow for three layers of dreams, meaning that they won't wake up if they die. Instead, they'll drop into Limbo, leaving them lost in the LotusEaterMachine for so long that they'll be brain dead when they wake up. So, the dream team have to avoid serious injuries until they can use the Kick (the alternative DreamEmergencyExit) to wake up... which becomes a problem when [[spoiler: Saito - the group's paymaster and the only man that can save Cobb from getting arrested - ]] is mortally wounded in Level 1, leaving the rest of the team [[RaceAgainstTime trying to complete the mission before he bleeds out]]. [[spoiler: Fortunately, it turns out that the "dying in a dream" trick still works in Limbo - ''if'' you can remember that there's another reality to wake up to, as Cobb and Saito do in the finale.]]

* ThePursuingNightmare:
** Extractors will eventually find themselves up against Projections of the dreamer's subconsciousness. The mental equivalent of white blood cells, they react with increasing hostility towards any intruders - even friends of the dreamer - and will grow steadily more numerous and violent in their efforts to eliminate them. Because [[ZergRush Projections are limitless in number]], Extractors have to hide somewhere out of the way while they finish their work... and if that doesn't work, all they can do is run like hell in a desperate attempt to stay ahead of the Projections - as Yusuf finds himself stuck doing in Level 1 of the heist.
** In the finale, Mal raises the possibility that Cobb never awoke from their initial dream exploration of Limbo, and that he's been dreaming all this time - even suggesting that the law enforcement agencies and corporate hitsquads that have been hunting him around the world were really just Projections, casting the frantic chase scene in Mumbai in an entirely different light. [[spoiler: It's soon confirmed that Cobb ''did'' awake from that particular dream and is actually being haunted by Mal's shade for the lengths he went to in order to awaken them from Limbo.]]

* BizzareDreamRationalization: PlayedForDrama. Main character Dom Cobb's wife Mal is revealed to have killed herself this way, by accident. When experimenting with "dream-sharing", the two entered a state known as "Limbo", where they could warp and manipulate their subconscious into impossible scenarios, also experiencing subjective time at [[YearInsideHourOutside an extremely dilated pace]]. Mal is unable to think rationally after the incident, so Cobb surreptitiously shares a dream with her one more time and implants an idea that her mind is not experiencing reality properly. Unfortunately, this has the opposite effect: Mal thinks that one more "kick" (a method of awakening a dream-sharing individual) will finally bring herself into true reality, but, as she is already awake, she does not realize that it will actually kill her. To Cobb's horror, he watches as she jumps out of her high-story apartment window to her death.
