* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: At a time when the Luftwaffe is under orders to only bomb RAF airfields, a German bomber pilot gets lost and decides to just ditch his bombs and head home. He inadvertently drops them on London, prompting the RAF to retaliate by bombing Berlin. In response, Hitler orders the Luftwaffe to switch its emphasis to bombing London -- taking the pressure off the RAF airfields. Downing quickly sees the German switch it tactics for the blunder it was in RealLife.

One of the newbies — we never learn his name — is hit by enemy fire and seen trying to open the canopy of his plane to bail out, but is unable to do so.

* IChooseToStay: A tragic example; Flight Sergeant Andy Moore's wife was supposed to move out to the countryside with their two young sons, but chose to remain in London. When Andy goes on leave, he finds his family in the local church hall, their home having been destroyed in an air raid. Then the church hall receives a direct hit, with Andy only surviving because all able-bodied men were called upon to help rescue some people who were trapped in a bombed-out house.
