Magikarp often feed on seaweed and other things at the bottom of rivers and lakes, and do leap out of the water, sometimes to take insect prey. Gyarados, on the other hand, eat mostly fish and pretty much any water dwelling Pokémon they can catch and fit in their mouths.

Magikarp is a hard bulbous scaled carp Pokemon, often orange in color, with some variants into a yellowish color. Its fins, top and bottom are distinctly three pointed and white in color. It often has a look of stupidity, with an ever open mouth and curiously blank eyes. Two barbels hang from the sides of it's mouth, helping it in its search for food. Female barbels are white, while males are tan.

Gyarados, the evolved form, is very distinct from its former form. It is several times larger, and takes on a serpentine appearance. The scales it once had fuse together into armor-like segments. Its color is a bright blue with a yellow underside. Its spots along the side of its body are also yellow. They sport a tri-crest over their red eyes and the notable three spike top fins are seen running along the body, at two-for-four scale segments. Females have white barbels, as their Magikarp counterpart sports. Has a red or "shiny" variant.

Magikarp are not known for being much, other then a prime source of food for many other Pokemon and humans, and the niche of prey they fill. Also known for being incredibly weak, so many trainers will not even attempt to raise them. [Trainer's note: There are Magikarp salesmen, so if you insist on buying one, barter the price DOWN.] Because they are quite docile, very few in the wild will actually go on to evolve into their more fearsome state. And now that it is at the top of the food chain, it is often very territorial, and will fight other Pokemon that it even ''thinks'' pose a threat. It is not unusual to find a Gyarados and a Tentacruel fighting it out in the oceans, though the Gyarados may simply be trying to eat the Tentacruel. Many people live in fear of this beast, and sightings at beaches often send swimmers back for the shore. Most ocean side cities keep a weather eye out, as many a Gyarados in a foul mood have wreaked havoc upon them.
