Physical DescriptionHoppip is a Grass-Flying-type Pokémon. It is .4 meters tall, and weighs .5 kilograms. Its body is round (Though not perfectly spherical) and covered in a soft pink fuzz, with four stubby legs (there is a small yellow spot on the back of each leg, scientists believe that this is used as an eyespot to deter predators) and an equally stubby tail. It has pointed, cat-like ears. Two large green leaves protrude from its head (These leaves have a notable similarity to those of dandelions). It has round, yellow eyes, and a small mouth (Hoppip, and all its evolutions, have tiny, needle-teeth, for the purpose of eating plants). Because of its small size and lightness, it can float on even gentle breezes, and in fact uses this skill to travel. Skiploom looks very similar to Hoppip, although there are a few striking differences. First, and most obviously, it is now green. It is now .6 meters tall, and weighs 1 kilogram. Skiploom’s ears are larger and floppier, and can be flapped to gain altitude when a breeze is not strong enough to lift it. A large yellow flower has grown on its head (This flower is attached to a pivoting muscle, and can be spun like a propeller to produce a breeze). Its back legs have lengthened and widened, while its front legs have shrunken, meaning that Skiploom, when not flying (i.e. almost never), walks on two legs. Its eyes are now red, and its mouth has grown larger. Its tail has become rounder and shorter. Jumpluff, again, has changed color, and it is now blue. It is .8 meters tall, and weighs 3 kilograms. Its body is a perfect sphere. The flower it wore as Skiploom has been replaced by four small, round leaves and a large sphere, made up of cotton spores. Its back legs have become round, and its arms have been replaced by two additional cotton puffs. Its eyes are the same as Skiploom’s, but its mouth now resembles that of a Hoppip. Its tail is, like all other aspects of it, perfectly spherical. Similarities have been noted between the Hoppip line and the Unovan Cottonee line, in appearance, biology, and behavior, and many people, both scientists and laypeople, believe them to be related. If this is the case, the Hoppip line is doing far better than its Unovan counterpart, having expanded to every region except Hoenn (although it is not common in Unova). The Hoppip line, like most Pokémon, contains an exceedingly rare genetic variation. Hoppip born with this mutant gene have green fuzz instead of pink, and their leaves are a lighter shade of green. They evolve into Skiploom with purple fuzz. Finally, the mutated Jumpluff are, oddly enough, the same shade of pink as a Hoppip without the mutant gene. Hoppip affected by this mutation are often sought out by collectors for their rarity.
Notable BiologyMembers of the Hoppip line have only three internal organs; a pair of lungs, a tiny stomach (although it grows a lot during each evolution) and a small (Hoppip is not a very intelligent Pokémon) brain. Most of its systems (the primary digestive system, the circulatory system, and the reproductive system) are contained in its leaves and cotton (Hoppip and Skiploom have no reproductive organs, and they cannot breed). This is the main reason why they are so light (similarities between the biology of the Hoppip line and that of the Cottonee line in this regard has not gone unnoticed, and lends more weight to the theory that they may be related). All three members of the Hoppip line have different methods of controlling their flight. Hoppip can move its legs and tail to act as rudders, steering itself through the winds. However, as Hoppip weighs only half a kilogram, strong winds can still blow it off course. Skiploom steers with its legs, tail, and ears, and as it weighs twice as much as Hoppip, it takes a stronger wind to disorient it. Jumpluff uses all three cotton puffs (particularly the ones on its arms, which are movable), in addition to its legs and tail, to steer itself, and due to a combination of the large, unwieldy cotton puffs and Jumpluff’s much greater weight, it can stay on course in all but the strongest winds. Jumpluff constantly sheds and regrows its cotton, and this cotton can be farmed to make clothes. (See In Human Society) Members of the Hoppip line contain hundreds of solar receptor cells on their skin. Scientists have made several studies on these cells, and discovered that Hoppip (and, by extension, Skiploom and Jumpluff) have three different subtypes, all of which respond differently to specific weather conditions. The first two undergo various homeostatic changes in direct response to increased sunlight The former subtype in question responds to strong sunlight by increasing its metabolism, thereby increasing its movement and agility. In the second subtype, the cells instead trigger an agitation of the immune system, which then heal various ailments, such as poisons or confusion (Many people have attempted to extract the substance used in this process, see In Human Society for more information). The last (and by far the rarest) subtype actually lacks these cells (or at least the ability to use them), and is instead in the possession of an incredibly pliable body structure, enabling it to slip through very small gaps.
HabitatHoppip are native to Johto, and are found almost everywhere (however, they are strongly diurnal, and will hide in trees at night). In Kanto, they have been sighted on Five Island, the Memorial Pillar, the Five Isle Meadow, Resort Gorgeous, and the Water Labyrinth. They are not found in Hoenn, possibly due to the strong volcanic presence (which creates a great deal of ash and smoke, deterring Hoppip). In Sinnoh, they are found in Fuego Valley (They enjoy playing near the windmills, in the breeze), and on Route 205. In Unova, they are only found in a small woodlands that has been named, “White Forest” by surrounding Unovans, probably due to Cottonee and Whimsicott already filling their biological niche. In Kalos, they can be found in groups of 5 on Route 7. Skiploom are found only on Route 14 in Johto, and, like Hoppip, hide during the night. They are not found in Kanto, Hoenn, or Unova. In Sinnoh, they are found, like Hoppip, on Route 205 and at the Ironworks. During a period of time when Sinnoh became significantly colder, Skiploom migrated away. Jumpluff are almost never found in the wild, as they are usually floating high above the ground. Jumpluff have been sighted everywhere from Kanto to Unova (although they still avoid Hoenn). However, they rarely descend to the ground for long enough to battle and capture one, and so, should one wish to own a Jumpluff, they usually have to acquire it the hard way, by evolving Skiploom.
DietAll three members of the Hoppip line gain at least some of their nutrients from chlorophyll. Hoppip especially absorbs 90% of its diet from the sun, due to its large leaves. Skiploom, due to its smaller leaves, separates its diet about fifty-fifty, while Jumpluff is Hoppip’s opposite, taking very few nutrients from chlorophyll, as its leaves are tiny. When not simply absorbing sunlight, the Hoppip line is herbivorous, eating leaves, small grasses, and berries. While a Hoppip generally only eats a few leaves a day, and a Skiploom will strip a few branches clean of leaves and berries, Jumpluff have been known to reduce large patches of grass to bare earth when they feed. Fortunately, since they only descend to the ground to feed around once a week, travel all over the globe in between, and are very rare, the local ecology is generally capable of withstanding a Jumpluff’s appetite.
HazardsThe Hoppip line is largely harmless. They are very docile, and unlikely to attack unless very provoked. However, when provoked, they can prove a formidable opponent. Like many Grass-types, the Hoppip line can learn a series of attacks that drain the energy of a foe (how this is done is still a mystery, although Zubat can pull off a similar move that seems to involve the draining of blood) and give it to Hoppip. Recipients of this attack have described it as highly unpleasant, and it is advised that you do your best to prevent you or your Pokémon from being hit with it. In addition, the Hoppip line can spray powders from a small orifice in their tails. These powders have varying effects when inhaled, ranging from poisoning, to temporary paralysis, to unconsciousness. Hoppip (and occasionally Skiploom) will release these powders on instinct if frightened. They can also scatter cotton to blind and entangle a foe. As such, when traveling in Hoppip territory, move quietly, and bring a Pokémon capable of using Gust or Whirlwind in case worst comes to worst.
Courting and ChildrearingHoppip and Skiploom do not breed in the wild, although they are known to develop reproductive ability in captivity. Jumpluff constantly shed their cotton spores. When the spores land in the ground, they will produce a baby Hoppip. The baby Hoppip will take about a week to grow to full size, during which time it will do almost nothing but eat. In captivity, a male and female Jumpluff will combine their spores, forming children with characteristics of both parents. Jumpluff do not care for their children, as said children are almost impossible to find under most circumstances.
Social StructureHoppip form huge colonies to huddle against the wind. These colonies have no particular leader, and are often separated by strong winds. Hoppip do not seem to mind being blown around like this, and will join up with any Hoppip in whatever location they find themself. Skiploom generally form small groups of five to ten. During windstorms, they can huddle together to protect themselves. If threatened by a predator (Of which there are many—notable predators of the Hoppip line include Aipom, Yanma, and Ariados, but there are many, many others), they can attack as one to drive it off. However, more than ten Skiploom in one area tend to be hard to feed, and so, if groups absorb more than ten members, they will generally split apart. Jumpluff, in sharp contrast to its pre-evolutions, are largely solitary, almost never associating with other Jumpluff. Scientists believe this is due to potential conflicts over food that the presence of multiple Jumpluff would cause, and judging by the amount of foliage consumed when Jumpluff lands, this hypothesis is not far off the mark.
In Human SocietyThe Hoppip line is generally loved by humans, and is very popular among children for its cute appearance and docile behavior. In addition, many scientists study the healing substance produced by one of the subtypes of Hoppip, and have made several extremely valuable substances out of it, including a spray medicine that has been dubbed a Full Heal by Trainers and scientists. Hoppip are used by many weather reporters to determine the strength of winds, as Hoppip seem to be able to sense coming storms several hours in advance. Finally, Hoppip leaves are considered a delicacy in most of Johto and parts of Kanto. Hoppip leaves, like Jumpluff cotton, are shed regularly and can easily be gathered. Skiploom flowers are often collected, as they are used in bouquets and lapels. These flowers are shed naturally every week or so, and they can be harvested without injury to the Skiploom. Jumpluff cotton is extremely valuable, as it can be woven into clothing. As such, many farmers outside of Unova (where Cottonee are used) have Jumpluff farms. As such, if you own a Hoppip or Skiploom, unless you wish to be consigned to the endless task of cleaning up after Jumpluff, it is advised that you purchase an Everstone to prevent your Skiploom from evolving.]]
