Fanon / Steven Universe

Go To

  • Depictions of Steven as a teenager, and especially as an adult, tend to have him with long hair, often with ringlets similar to his mother's. It's also quite popular to depict teen and adult Steven as extremely tall, another trait inherited from his mother, in stark contrast to how short he is as a kid. Future jossed both of these, at least for teenage Steven.
  • Quite a few fans love to headcanon Steven as pansexual. Mostly due to how he pretty much likes anyone, and how he's often wearing pink, yellow, and blue.
  • The Cool Kids (Sour Cream, Buck Dewey, and Jenny Pizza) are in a polyamorous relationship. This is due in large part to how often all three are seen together and how calm they are together.
  • Fanworks prior to the release of the extended intro sequence during Season 2 had the Gems raising Steven since he was a baby instead of Greg. "Steven's Birthday" had Greg further dispute this fanon by pointing out clearly that the Gems had no idea how to handle a baby, so he was the only one who could raise him.
  • It's a pretty common fan-theory that if Steven were to either retreat into his gem or die, he would end up regenerating as Rose due to Steven inheriting her gem (or being "his own mother" as he puts it). However, many also dispute it, since there's been no indication Steven can even be poofed, and Rose returning would cheapen all of the previous drama of her being gone. This idea actually gets addressed in "Change Your Mind", and proven false as there's no remainder of Rose Quartz in Steven's gem.
  • It has become popular belief that Greg is, well, Greg (from Over the Garden Wall). They're both chubby, brown haired, and musically inclined male characters. It helps that it has been established that Greg didn't come to Beach City until he was an adult, therefore eliminating one counter argument. Also if the two Gregs are one and the same, it could help explain why he's so adaptable to the weird Gem-related things happening around him. The Future episode "Mr. Universe" pokes holes in the fanon, however, by implying Greg to have been an only child and portraying Mr. and Mrs. DeMayo much differently than Greg's parents in Over the Garden Wall were described.
  • While it was there before the episode premiered, Peridot having blue eyes under her visor absolutely skyrocketed after "Log Date 7 15 2" showed she has blue blush, and someone even tried to see what Peridot's eye color might look like because of it. Later Jossed, as “In Dreams” reveals her eyes are actually green.
  • It's typically accepted that the Orange Great North Monster from "Gem Hunt" and "Crack The Whip" is Biggs Jasper (possibly the same one mentioned by Bismuth), and the Green Snow Monster that also appears in these episodes (as well as "Earthlings") is often said to be Ocean Jasper.
    • At NYCC 2016, it was confirmed that these two Gems were indeed Jaspers, and it's further supported in "Made of Honor" when Bismuth unbubbles the Orange Monster and refers to her as Biggs.
  • Despite the fact that we don't see enough of them to judge whether if it's accurate, the Carnelian and skinny Jasper seen in "That Will Be All" are commonly depicted as best friends and/or pseudo-sisters due to their shared Beta Kindergarten origins and each of them being defective in some way.
  • A good amount of people take to the idea that Smoky Quartz has three arms because Steven is half human. Following this idea, fanart of Rose and Amethyst's Smoky usually gives her four arms, while fanart of Steven and Pearl's Rainbow Quartz usually gives them three eyes. When Rainbow 2.0 actually forms in "Change Your Mind", he has four eyes.
  • There's a general consensus that, if Steven and Lars were to Fuse, their Fusion would be named "Stars".
  • Humanized fan-works usually follow certain fanon:
    • Garnet almost always has dark skin and an afro.
    • Human Jasper will often have vitiligo. She's often Amethyst's older (biological, adopted, or foster) sister.
    • Peridot wears a hijab, wears a hat, and/or has prosthetic limbs. She is a dark-skinned blonde just as often as she's not.
    • Blue Diamond wears a hijab.
    • Yellow Diamond wears a helmet.
    • White Diamond is usually portrayed as an actress past her prime. She's almost always the mother of the other Diamonds, though it varies if she's biological or adoptive, mostly in regards to Blue and Yellow.
    • Both Amethyst and Lapis are usually Ambiguously Brown (with Amethyst often being dark skinned with light hair, though brown hair is also common for her, as well as dyeing her hair a shade of purple). They're usually Hispanic and Polynesian (or Filipino) respectively if their races are specified.
    • Pearl is often times the Token White of the Crystal Gems (baring Rose and Steven), though her being Indian is not uncommon. She has strawberry blonde or red hair if she's white, dark brown if she's not.
    • Rose Quartz is always depicted as white. Sometimes her pink hair is turned into a more natural red.
    • Ruby has dark skin and kinky hair. Sapphire can be dark skinned as well, though it's not uncommon for her to have lighter skin. Either way, Ruby is usually the darker of the two. Ruby and Sapphire are Garnet's mothers — often, one of them will be transgender so Garnet can be the biological child of them both. Ruby is usually depicted as being into martial arts.
    • Since Sapphire was revealed to only have one eye, human Sapphire often has an eyepatch or a scar over one eye. Sometimes she keeps her bangs, but sometimes only one eye is covered (with no indication as to whether or not the blocked eye is damaged.) When dark-skinned, she's usually a blonde.
    • Lapis and Jasper are exes.
    • Lapis and Peridot are roommates. If they're of college age, then they're usually art students.
    • Pearl, Amethyst, and Garnet are Childhood Friends. Rose, however, differs from person to person due to her usually being depicted as 10-20 years older than the other Crystal Gems. Occasionally she's their ex-teacher, due to a fan-artist using that in their art.
    • When given more realistic height proportions, Amethyst is sometimes drawn taller than Peridot, occasionally even One Head Taller.
    • Spinel's post-abandonment form is often translated into her being goth or emo, and she usually has a job in children's entertainment (with one AU popularizing her as a mascot at Chuck E. Cheese).
  • It's generally accepted that Steven has no issue dressing in traditionally feminine clothes such as skirts or dresses. This might be canon, as one episode featured him dressing up in a dress for a competition, though he's never casually crossdressed (he rarely even wears anything besides a t-shirt or hoodie).
  • Steven and Greg being Jewish because of the latter originally having a Jewish surname (DeMayo), and because Rebecca and Steven Sugar (who Steven was based on) are both Jewish.
  • Gems are usually pinned as female on default; most fans roll with the interpretation that they're of No Biological Sex but generally are female gendered. According to Rebecca Sugar, Gems don't identify as female, but they generally use she/her pronouns and are okay with being viewed as women.
  • Smoky Quartz's gender is unconfirmed, but it's usually interpreted that, like Stevonnie, they are non-binary and use "they/them" pronouns. It's assumed that all of Steven's fusions are non-binary and they all use "they/them". While the latter is true for most, at least one, his fusion with Pearl, also uses "he/him" pronouns.
  • In works where Gems can have biological children (affectionately referred to as "Gem Egg Hell"), they lay eggs that hatch into either small versions of their Gem types or small versions of their Fusions.
  • It's implied that Rose has had numerous lovers over the years, but many fans believe that all of them were simply romantic, and that Greg was her first sexual relationship. This usually goes with the fanon that on default Gems aren't interested in sexual activities.note
  • There's a common belief that a Gem's gemstone is a very... delicate place, so to speak, and that actions like kissing someone else's gemstone are very intimate.
  • Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond are Pink's older sisters/parents, and White Diamond is Pink, Yellow, and Blue's mother/Pink's grandmother. Pink Diamond is Rose's mom and Steven's grandmother; Yellow Diamond and Blue Diamond are Steven's great aunts/great-grandmothers, and White Diamond is Steven's great-grandmother/great-great-grandmother. As of "A Single Pale Rose": due to being half-Pink Diamond, Steven's real aunts/grandmothers are Yellow Diamond and Blue Diamond, and White Diamond is Steven's real grandmother/great-grandmother.
  • Yellow Diamond is a Former Teen Rebel who was just as bratty (if not more) to White Diamond as Pink Diamond was to Yellow.
  • Prior to "Steven's Dream", Blue Diamond was sometimes depicted to be wheelchair-bound in Human AUs, due to her never getting up from her palanquin during her screentime in "The Answer".
  • Depictions of the ship between Lapis/Peridot ("Lapidot") prior to the events of "Barn Mates" and onward:
    • Lapis was the goofy initiative one, while Peridot was the moody easily-flustered one. In canon, their personalities are the other way around.
    • Back when she still had her limb enhancers, some people thought Peridot was part-robot, and would malfunction when overwhelmed.
      • If Peridot wasn't part robot, the limb enhancers were prosthetics instead.
    • Despite Peridot canonically being shorter with limb enhancers, if not the same size, Lapis was always drawn smaller.
    • Peridot being an "MLG Pro Player", and Lapis would just annoy her in the middle of her games.
    • Lapis doing fart noises to annoy Peridot because she can.
  • Amethyst is often depicted as agender, genderfluid, or bigender because she sometimes transforms into men.
  • Rose Quartz looks unusually human compared to other Gems, including a near-peach skin tone and breasts. To explain this, she designed her Rose Quartz form after humans. Jossed as Pearl came up with the Rose Quartz design.
  • Following The Reveal that Rose Quartz was Pink Diamond, depictions of Steven (and sometimes Rose herself) with his mother's pink Diamond eyes have abounded. He ends up having these in Future.
    • Similarly, the "little voice" in "The Zoo" was often assumed to be Pink Diamond's pre-recorded voice. After The Reveal, the voice belonging to a real Rose Quartz became much more likely.
  • It's not uncommon to find depictions of Lapis with gold freckles on her face and/or shoulders, stemming from how real life Lapis Lazuli gemstones can have flakes of gold on their surface. This can also transfer to the humanized fan-works as Lapis having normal freckles. This became Ascended Fanon in Future as another Lapis Lazuli, known as Nice Lapis, has gold freckles.
  • Rose and Pearl's relationship has gone through cyclic fanons. In Season 1, many thought they were a couple in the past, but by mid-Season 2 this was called into question so many began depicting Pearl's love as unrequited. This in itself was later done away with as the series implies Rose did love Pearl.
  • Garnet is often depicted as aromantic (or demiromantic) and asexual because she's explicitly stated she isn't interested in dating.
  • Peridot is sometimes depicted to be asexual because a passage in the book Fusion for Beginners and Experts states her being perfectly okay with not fusing. This was later confirmed, along with her also being aromantic, by Word of Saint Paul.
  • The appearance of Peridot and Lapis Lazuli's new outfits had many fans speculating their fusion to have an uncanny resemblance to Kamina: incorporating Peridot's glasses, Lapis' baggy pants, and a watery cape to complete the look.
    • It's also common to have their fusion to be called Chrysocolla (due to the relation to Malachite), or Turquoise, the latter because the name is a combination of their colors: blue and green. Aquamarine used to be popular before the actual character called Aquamarine made her debut.
  • It's close to universally agreed that a hypothetical fusion between a Pearl and a Jasper would make a Fire Opal. Some even like to think that every different Quartz type creates a different Opal.
  • Many fans have latched on to the idea that White's current Pearl was once Pink Diamond's, and vice versa—what exactly White did to make White Pearl so monotonous and strange is debated. This is confirmed to be the case in "Together Alone".
    • In fanworks where White's Pearl is shown when she was Pink Pearl, her two hair-buns are given a less polished, "fluffy" look, making them look more like real, messy hair.
  • The multi-colored quartz seen near the end of "Change Your Mind" is often assumed to be Crazy Lace, due to her coloration being similar to the texture of a real life Crazy Lace Agate. This was later confirmed in the show itself.
    • Ice Monster (the little gem near Snowflake), is often assumed to be a Larimar, some even theorize that she's "Little Larimar", who was mentioned by Bismuth in "Made Of Honor". This was later confirmed in the Creator's Commentary.
    • Even though it wasn't confirmed in the show itself, nor through Word of God, some treat Crab Monster's presumed name "Aventurine" as a fact. This was later jossed as she is really a Bixbite.
    • Worm Monster's name is either "Coral" or "Andesine" depending on who you ask. Water Bear is sometimes referred to as "Covellite". The Geode Beetles are "Prehnites", though some like the idea of them being Moldavites, as they are the smallest non-Pebble gems, and Moldavites are known for being very small. Turns out, Worm Monster's real name is "Orange Spodumene".
    • Similar to Ocean Jasper, quite a few background Quartzes were given names based on their gem texture, besides the aforementioned Crazy Lace, since she was at least namedropped in the show. note
  • As for Gems that were never seen getting uncorrupted:
    • The Obelisk is sometimes thought to be a Goshenite, due to her white color and impressive powerset, since beryls like Aquamarine and Emerald are high-ranking and thus very powerful.
    • The Desert Glass is sometimes drawn with a cape resembling her pillow form, which is sometimes translated into her being "plushy". While fanart of her being tall exists, some favor her being short and fragile. Her skin color is almost always light teal.
    • The Big Bird is sometimes assumed to be a Scolecite, due to its gemstones having a similar shape. It's also generally assumed to be a fusion, with their uncorrupted forms being the size of Aquamarine, if not smaller.
    • The Gem Cave Creature is assumed to be a Cyanotrichite. Some draw her as partly bald or wearing a cap like Nephrite or Bixbite, her weapon is almost always a drill.
    • The Invisible Monster is sometimes assumed to be a Crystal Quartz. When uncorrupted, some prefer her staying invisible, or at least the non-clothed parts.
    • The Lighthouse Gem Monster is almost universally agreed to be a Blue Topaz, due to her gem cut. Some depict her with red scars all over her body, her dislike of Lars being retained, even after uncorruption.
    • The Slinker is debated, but some people like to think of her as an Euclase or some type of Pearl. She generally has Prehensile Hair when uncorrupted, resembling her Combat Tentacles.
    • The Tongue Monster is a Dioptase, due to their exactly similar color schemes. The nose Gem placement is retained when uncorrupted. Some people also like to think of her as being the same Gem as the nose statue in the Cloud Arena.
  • If the Gems had Personality Blood Types:
    • A: Pearl, Peridot, Sapphire, Yellow Diamond
    • B: Amethyst, Jasper, Lapis Lazuli, Malachite, Ruby, Blue Diamond
    • O: Steven, Rose Quartz, Bismuth, Pink Diamond
    • AB: Garnet, Opal, White Diamond
  • In a crossover or interaction between the series and Ben 10, a Gem Transformation gained by Ben Tennyson would be called Taydenite, a gemstone from the Ben 10 universe. What sort of Gem Taydenite is, however, is less consistent.
  • There are some fanfictions that speculate that Connie has picked up a food-hoarding problem as a result of her time on Homeworld.
  • Aquamarine is never confirmed to be an Era 2 Gem, like Peridot, but due to her ridiculously short size and having no summoned weapon, it's generally assumed that she is. Era 1 Aquamarines are just as "detailed" as their Era 2 counterparts, but freakishly tall and thin.
    • Speaking of Peridot, Era 1 Peridots are usually depicted as mostly the same as Era 2 Peridots, except for being much taller, with some outright giving them a Quartz-esque physique. The show has shown tall Peridot-looking Gems from the back in "Legs From Here To Homeworld", so there is some credit to this theory. How their finger screens are incorporated into their bodies is debated, some depict them as similar to Zircon's monocle visor.
  • In the swap AUs where Connie is the half-human child of a Gem instead of Steven, her mother is usually either Blue or Yellow Diamond.
  • Food preferences:
    • Pearl normally hates food, however, people often depict her as fond of tea (stemming from a scene in Episode 8 where Pearl holds a teapot). In contrast, Garnet is depicted as a coffee person and Amethyst likes soda.
    • Pearl mentioned she liked pie in an early episode, and this has been handwaved as her enjoying making pie instead of eating it. However, fans sometimes depict eating pie as being a guilty pleasure for hers.
    • Peridot being fond of Doritos or maple syrup. This is due to memes surrounding both her design and a debunked theory that she fell into Canada. The show itself implies neither she nor Lapis enjoy eating.note
    • Blue Diamond is comically portrayed to drown her sorrows in ice cream.
    • Spinel being fond of donuts in general ever since The Movie portrayed her eating one.
  • Though it's never stated in the show, Steven and Rose's shared ability to revive recently deceased organic lifeforms into beings with portal powers with their tears—done with Lars and Lion respectively is often assumed to be a case of It Only Works Once, mostly to keep them from being too overpowered. While Steven would later revive Jasper with his tears, he also required the essences of all the Diamonds to help and she didn't come out as a magical pink portal zombie, so it's likely that the same rules don't apply.
  • Connie's name is sometimes seen as a variation of the Hindi name "Kahaani", which means "story".
  • Amethyst eats so much because she uses a great deal of energy from shapeshifting all the time.
