Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the characters. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

The Good Student by Sylvia Volk

  • Recommended by Merseburg
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: (Duncan) MacLeod is reunited with a former student while in Paris and receives a philosophical lesson (or three) from Methos.
  • Comments: This fic gets recommended all over the place because it is just that good. It has great characterization and dialogue, and really feels like it could be an actual episode of the series.

The John 21:25 Series

The Methos (and Kronos) Journals by swordznsorcery.

  • Recommended by Maist
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Methos and Kronos have had a long and violent life together, for them a great deal of fun. For others, usually far from it. Up until A Drive In The Country everything takes place pre-TV-series and thus has no direct connection with Duncan MacLeod. Operates under the assumption that Methos lies... a lot. Also that he's not even remotely a sweet, innocent. Except sometimes. When he feels like it.
  • Warnings: Loads of violent and horrible deaths, many a victim who didn't deserve it.
  • Comments: Great characterizations, among other things. When we get to the modern days, the writer's descriptions of Methos' living spaces are wonderful and hilarious! There are times when it stretches my belief, such as when our heroes are sometimes denser than rocks. If they weren't, though, they wouldn't get in the situations.

The Fourth Seal by Ziggy Sternenstaub <—Found a working link!

  • Recommended by jyshin2
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: What if Methos had made different choices when Kronos returned? What does an Apocalypse look like? Re-write of Revelation 6:8.
  • Comments: A dark, gritty read with excellent characterization. It's a bleak story overall, so not for people who like happy endings, but it's great writing and well worth the time.

Just a Game by Parda

  • Recommended by jyshin2
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Methos remembers the origins of the Game.
  • Comments: Great characterization.

A storyline beginning in one series and crossing over into another.

Don't Disrespect the Queen by Perspicacity

  • Recommended by Phaethon
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Highlander film crossover with Harry Potter: upon defeating the Kurgan, Connor MacLeod receives more than just telepathy; he also gains the ability to do magic. Coincidentally, Hogwarts is seeking a new Defense instructor.
  • Comments: A strange, surprisingly entertaining piece, if a bit of a Crack Fic. Connor's classroom interactions with Hermione, in particular, are priceless. Departs from Highlander movie canon after the first film.

Death & Betrayal by Marble Glove

  • Recommended by Bdzoke
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Methos takes a young Severus Snape under his wing.
  • Comments: A wonderful piece that that explains how Snape was able to become a spy on Voldemort, and how much of an impact a reluctant teacher might have on his life. Canon Pairings, no Slash.

Unalienable by Basingstoke

  • Recommended by Dude Where's My Password
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: An X-Men crossover fic inspired by Peter Wingfield's appearance in X2: X-Men United, with setting details drawn from both the movies and the comics. After the events of X2, Wolverine learns that he is an immortal, and Methos and Duncan come to Xavier's school and become involved with the mutant community.
  • Comments: A long, somewhat meandering story centered mainly on characters and relationships, with plot elements involving the struggle for mutant rights and questions about the ethics of the Game. Includes a Duncan/Methos romantic relationship, already established at the beginning of the story.

Bella McLeod by OriginalHealer

  • Recommended by ErikModi
  • Status: In progress
  • Crossover with: Twilight (yes, really)
  • Pairings: Bella/Rosalie, mentioned Alice/Emmet and Edward/Jasper
  • Synopsis: Bella is and Immortal raised by Duncan MacLeod. She has been part the Game waiting for the Gathering when she ends up moving in to Forks with her Watcher, Charlie Swan. Posing as father/daugher. Bella ends up meeting the Cullens and falling for a certain blond goddess, who also feels a connection to Bella, though being stubborn as she is, Rosalie tries to push her away, until she realizes the danger that Bella constantly faces.
  • Comments: A Crack Fic that absolutely should not work, but somehow does. The writing style and especially dialogue are stilted and unnatural at times, words are misused inconsistently ("a death body" instead of "a dead body," a reaction to someone's "dead" instead of someone's "death"), and the author misspells "MacLeod", but it's still a surprisingly good story despite those flaws. The characters are interesting, Bella is completely different from her canon characterization thanks to being an Immortal with about fifty years under her belt, the romance is. . . well, okay it's not much better than the original, but it is better. Watching two different supernatural entities try and keep up two separate masquerades in front of each other is quite amusing. Bella is more confident, competent, snarky, and sassy, and while she's still a bit of a klutz, that's actually a bad flaw to have when you're Immortal (Good Thing You Can Heal is less of a good thing when you really need people to not notice you can heal). Rosalie flying into literal jealous frenzies is equally amusing and scary — scary because it's still a jealous rage, amusing because she's being triggered by out-of-context snippets she overhears of Bella's conversations with Charlie or other Immortals. The story intersperses beats from the first novel/movie (substituting Rosalie for Edward where appropriate) while adding Bella bumping into other Immortals, some friendly, some less so. Oh, by the way, one of those friendly Immortals, Tobias, appeared in one of the author's other stories, showing him being mentored in The Game by Bella as the first Immortal she ever taught. When he's at home, he goes by Severus Snape.
