  • Summary: Mondo Oowada gives a practical lesson on the differences between 'I killed', 'I ended up killing', and 'I tried to kill but failed miserably'. It is, unsurprisingly, a rather unpleasant experience for everyone involved.
  • Comments: Quite in-character, and all in all an interesting view into Togami's head.

  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: Supposing Mondo didn't go batshit when Chihiro told him her secret. (An alternate take on Chapter 2 where no one dies and everyone's secrets are revealed.)
  • Comments: Comes up with interesting and plausible secrets for all the characters who didn't have theirs revealed in the game proper, along with all their reactions.

Light in Despair's darkness by Avret

  • Recommended by: Saber The Fallen Angel, The Anguished One
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: AU, Rational!Naegi. Monokuma was prepared for almost every eventuality. However, he did not realize that hope was not the only mental state that could stand against despair.
  • Comments: A very well written story exploring an interesting concept. The changes so far have all been justified, and make the audience wonder what else will change later on. A sequel can be here.

Summer Day Disease by BritishRaptor

  • Recomended by: Bassikun
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: A re-writing of chapter 3 in which three different people fall victims of the Despair Disease. It parts from the premise of Fuyuhiko stopping Akane from fighting against Monokuma and the party night going without any major issues... until the next morning, that is.
  • Comments: Well-written re-telling of the events of chapter 3 and does a very good job at exploring each character as much as possible. There are obvious spoilers from all the events of Danganronpa 2 up to the third chapter, so read at your own risk. Just a few Ship Tease moments between some of the characters, but not outright shipping in any way.

Goodbye Despair, Hello Future by GamingFennex

  • Recomended by: Bassikun
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Summary: A story of despair, told anew. When a story changes at one point... an entirely new one is born.
  • Comments: A re-telling of the second game that is kickstarted the minute a certain someone ends up being murdered during the party in chapter 1. Makes an excellent job trying to give each character a moment to shine as well as fixing many of the things that players usually dislike about the canon game. Obviously contains spoilers for Danganronpa 2, so read at your own risk. There are some ship-tease moments, but couples are not ultimately set in stone.

Danganronpa Class Swap by Heroman3003

  • Recomended by: Bassikun
  • Status:
    • Danganronpa Class Swap - Hope's Peak Academy: Complete
    • Danganronpa Class Swap 2 - Jabberwock Island: Hiatus
  • Summary for Danganronpa Class Swap - Hope's Peak Academy: Everyone knows the story of Hope's Peak Academy and killing game of class 78. How a class full of Ultimate students get trapped inside the walls of academy, and psychotic bear named Monokuma forces them to kill each other. Let's delve into this story then, and join its protagonist, Mahiru Koizumi, Ultimate Photographer and freshman of class 78, as she tries to survive the madness of the Killing School Life. Wait, what...?
  • Summary for Danganronpa Class Swap 2 - Jabberwock Island: Hope's Peak Academy... School that only invites Ultimate students of their fields and offers them the best chance at life. Except suddenly an entire class of Hope's Peak freshmen is whisked away to an unihabited island by a talking rabbit, telling them to make friends. Then a talking bear tells them that the only way to escape the island is to kill a classmate... Let's follow Mukuro Ikusaba and her class, as we see the struggles they face in the Killing Game of Jabberwock Island. Wait, what...?
  • Comments: A Role Swap AU in which the Goodbye Despair cast are the members of Class 78 whereas the Trigger Happy Havoc cast are the members of Class 77-B. The premise of both stories follows the same structure as the games they are based off, but with many unexpected surprises due to the change of characters. The fact that the story uses a script format somehow makes you feel as if you were playing the games themselves rather than reading a story.

I Too Have A Maiden's Heart by Maybethings

  • Recommended by: Explosivo25
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: A series of drabbles centred around Sakura, Aoi, their relationship, and the sometimes maybe tricky business of being a girl.
  • Comments: Well-written set of drabbles that provide excellent characterization for both Sakura and Aoi. Some are lighthearted, and some are extremely heartbreaking. There are spoilers for Dangan Ronpa so read at your own risk if you haven't finished the game. There is ship tease in places but no outright shipping.

The Ultimate Hope by hunterofcomedy

  • Recommended by: Alucard, Space Cowboy
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: AU story in which all of Junko's plans to create despair backfire on her completely.
  • Comments: This one is straight-up hilarious, and has a few moments of non-intrusive shipping too (if you're fine with the in-story acknowledged Crack Pairings). If you ever wanted to see Junko become the Only Sane Butt-Monkey in a world filled with hope, this story is for you. Be wary of profanity and occasional raunchy humor.

  • Summary: The events of the game were just that, a game. A VR simulation meant to test and strengthen Naegi's character. But though the events were fake, the impact they had on Naegi was very real. Now he has to go back to his normal, everyday life, deal with the fact that his classmates aren't quite the people he thought he knew, and figure out what the school intends by promoting him to SDHS Hope.

Super High School Level Cockblock by Mithrigil and puella_nerdii

  • Recommended by: koopakoop
  • Status: Complete/Oneshot
  • Synopsis: No one at Hope's Peak Academy ever gets laid.

Never Say Never by hunterofcomedy

  • Recommended by: Arcade Tokens, Space Cowboy
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: A single event can change the course of history. Circumstances change when the students of Hope's Peak Academy decide to stand together against the Mastermind.

Give a Little Luck by if-youhaveghosts

  • Recommended by: Melody Rose Gold
  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: "Super High School Level Luck" Naegi Makoto is possibly the most unlucky student at Hope's Peak Academy. Failing to live up to his title, Naegi has one semester to prove himself before he is expelled.
  • Comments: So far a very well done in character story that also incorporates background OC's who build on the character's personalities and experiences in a Pre-Despair setting.

SHSL Redundant by Ubriaco come una Scimmia (Link)

  • Recommended by: Plasticflamingos
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Takes place in an AU where Monokuma introduces a Mary Sue as the new motive while the students try to find some information
  • Comments: A humorous story that comes in two perspectives alternating every chapter, one is from the eyes of the Sue who has an incredibly delusional view of the world, and the other is what actually happens. The writing styles are drastically different and there are some good jokes in there too.

The memories of Otonashi Ryoko series by smxsonic

  • Recommended by: transparentanswer
  • Status: Dead; last updated July 2017
  • Synopsis: Supposedly Naegi managed to stop Enoshima Junko's execution which led to her capture by the future foundation and under Naegi's convincing, eventually have her memories erased, returning to the blank slate that was Otonashi Ryoko.
  • Comments: It was a nice fic that puts a blend of Dangan Ronpa Zero elements to it. It helps to blend out more of Otonashi Ryoko herself and see how she grows to be different from Junko. There's also a series following Dangan Ronpa IF.

Extra Life by The_Apocryphal_One

  • Recommended by: nmn3r3, Net Neutrality, Korodzik

  • Synopsis: Izuru knew he couldn't let her die, not like this, not while he had the power to save her. Chiaki survives her execution— but the fate of the world is still sealed. The road to recovery is a hard one, and a reunion is far off.
  • Comments: A canon compliant Fix Fic where Izuru rescues and revives Chiaki after her death in canon. What sets this fic apart from others with the same premise are things like the research poured into Chiaki's recovery, and Izuru's mission to find out why he saved her.

Expansion Pack by The_Apocryphal_One

The only problem...Hajime has to re-enter the game where history will repeat itself. If he can stop the murders from happening again everyone gets to survive. Can he save everyone or will he crumble when new murders occur?
  • Comments: This story is one of the most well-written stories I have ever read. The characterization is on point in my opinion and perfectly portrays what Danganronpa is. I am in love with it and it's hard to put into words why.

Hope's Peak's Brightest And Best by Instrumentalist

  • Recommended by: Octobersanctuary
  • Status: Dead; last updated December 2017
  • Summary: Things are a little crazy. Right now, Nekomaru and Akane are in the dining room having a brawl over who gets the last beer, egged on by Hiyoko, Mahiru, Fuyuhiko, and Peko; Ibuki, Mikan, Chiaki, and Hajime are in the living room getting high, watching Kazuichi drunkenly trying to repair Sonia's TV; Teruteru, Sonia, Gundham, and Nagito are attempting to make dessert for everyone; and Ryota and the Impostor are rapidly finishing off the last of the McNuggets. School starts in 6 hours, and Makoto and his classmates are trying to ignore the various calls and texts they're getting from their upperclassmen. In short, just another night for the 77th and 78th Classes of Hope's Peak Academy. Ms. Yukizome is not going to be happy when she hears about this in the morning...
  • Comments: An entertainingly snarky Non-Despair AU story involving a two-day party before the start of the year. Filled with fun, well-written dialogue and an interesting takes on both the characters & life at Hope's Peak in general.

Danganronpa 3: True Despair byAlexIsOkay

  • Recommended by: Knight Spark
  • Status: Dead; last updated December 2017
  • Synopsis: I'll be blunt, I didn't like Danganronpa 3: Despair Arc. It had a lot of little issues, but the biggest thing that put me off was the ending. I was hoping to see Junko go through the different members of Class 77 one at a time, using her knack for manipulation to turn them towards despair by really getting to the core of what would break them down as a person. I wanted to see what made each of them tick, and what could cause overwhelmingly cheerful and positive characters like Sonia or Nekomaru to turn so incredibly evil. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed out when I found that the answer was "literal mind control." So, this is my attempt to remedy that, and to create a story that's more interesting than some funky hypnosis video. Hopefully I'll do the series proud. Enjoy!
  • Comments: I have to say, if the original followed this formula, then maybe half the fanbase wouldn't deny that the anime was even created. If you want to see a better version of DR3, then look no further.

A Lesson In Order and Despair by MonochromeMastermind

  • Recommended by: Lizardon
  • Status: Dead; last updated September 2019
  • Synopsis: Kiyotaka Ishimaru began his life at Hope's Peak Academy bursting with optimism, determined to succeed. However, finding himself enveloped in a school and a world that both increasingly disregard order and regulation, it's only a matter of time before he inevitably snaps. This is the story of how Kiyotaka Ishimaru destroyed the world, and how he became the mastermind of a twisted game of betrayal and survival at Hope's Peak. A twisted lesson in order and despair.

You've Got That Wrong! by KlonoaDreams

  • Recommended by: Lizardon
  • Status: Dead; last updated October 2017
  • Synopsis: They say poor communication kills, and it definitely shows during the first trial when a certain Super High School Level Good Luck mentions one little detail that perplexes everyone. Apparently, nobody expected Makoto Naegi to be female...except Monokuma, but he doesn't count.
  • Comments: Probably one of the cutest fics to come out of the DR fandom. Seeing Fem!Naegi's interactions with the rest of Class 78 gave me the fuzzies.

The Yearbook by HopeyMcHope

  • Recommended by: Doc Holiday
  • Status: Dormant; last updated January 28, 2019
  • Synopsis: A few weeks after the end of the Final Killing Game, Makoto Naegi is presented with a yearbook that he's warned could change how the survivors of Hope's Peak's 78th class view their living friends, their dead classmates, and themselves. As the gang deals with the book's revelations, the Future Foundation is undergoing changes, new relationships are developing, and another threat is lurking. Everyone must determine how much the past really matters to the present and where they'll go from here. This story attempts to fill the gap before the final scene of DR3: Hope Side. (Naegiri happens and other ships are also hinted at.)
  • Comments: If you, like this troper, have been dying to find out what the hell happened between the last two shots of Side: Hope, this is the fic for you. It deals with the fallout from the Final Killing Game, and the idea of a Yearbook that none of Class 78 remembers provides interesting conflicts throughout the story. (Also, obviously great Naegiri fluff.) Please check this fic out.

Izuru Kamukura's Cuddly Toy by Suitov (Link)

  • Recommended by Shine101
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: When your artificial demigod emerges from his pod uncooperative and violent, what do you do? Give him something to cuddle! It… works? (A story about understanding. There is Kamukoma shipping towards the end. Hope’s Peak Academy Fluffiness Committee hopes you enjoy.)
  • Comments: An Alternate Universe Fic that diverges from canon just after Izuru's creation. If you couldn't guess, this is a very cute fic about Izuru getting a toy after his creation that he cherishes dearly and names Dandelion. This fic is a great mix of funny and adorable as Izuru takes an almost instant liking to Dandelion and his fluffy mane, decides the best thing in the world is fluffiness (a point he brings up often and at length) and does his best to annoy the ever-loving fluff out of the scientists running the Kamukura Project - who don't approve of their expensive Ultimate Hope's increasing attachment to Dandelion. As mentioned in the summary, the fic contains Kamukoma and it's pretty prevalent (though not until half-way through the fic) so if Kamukoma isn't your cup of tea, I wouldn't advise reading this.

Kazuichi Strangelove by Garscot (Link)

  • Recommended by DigiXBot, Apocrypha
  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: Being the stable, thoughtful and insightful paragon of wit that he is Kazuichi Soda easily navigates through being stuck in a simulation time loop. Or he is an emotional wreck and hates life.
  • The story where the least courageous survivor finds himself in a time loop meant to rescue the entire Class 77. The story puts Kazuichi through trial after trial as he makes sense of the loop. At first, he tries to use it to win Sonia over, which inevitably fails. However, a series of events led him to look over his own faults and try to save his classmates, leading to an epic "The Reason You Suck" Speech to despair!Mikan and the dead Junko over their obsession with despair. Kazuichi develops a more positive relationship with his classmates over the time loops (including Hajime, Mahiru, and Fuyuhiko), and it is quite engaging to see him grow in the later chapters.

  • Summary: Patience was never a word in Akane's vocabulary. Life was fast, rough, exciting. Life would never be afraid to drag her down, just so that she could bounce back up and kick sand into its eyes. For a long time, Akane liked this idea of life. Or maybe it was the only life she knew. Being stuck on a tropical island in the middle of the ocean contradicted everything. For once, Akane had no footing, no balance, no alley to escape through. But there was a reason she made herself feel this way. There was a reason she visited the pods way more than she should have, and there was a reason she continued living. She just didn't know the answer yet.
  • Comments: This story explores Akane's background and character development shortly after the events of the second killing game. I highly recommend it to those who are big fans of her character who wished that something more was done with her. Be warned, however, that it will tug at your heartstrings.

Byakuya shouldn’t feel like he has to hide himself away, but at the same time, Makoto dreads seeing him, to be reminded of what happened, what Makoto caused, even if that is what Makoto deserves.
Makoto elevates his arm, touching the curtain with his fingernails. It quivers. He bites his lip and lets his arm slump to his side.'Naegi visits his friends in the hospital. An AU where the other survivors sustained more permanent damage after what they went through.
  • Comments: a what if fic of what could have happened if the other survivors from the first game had receive more profound damage over the course of the Final Killing Game, whetevr it phisical (like Togami, and Hagakure), physchollogical (like Asahina or Kyoko) or even emotional (like Makoto).

  • Synopsis: ‘’Three different sacrifices are made, and three different survivors stumble out of the rubble.’’ An Alternate Universe Fic where Kaede Akamatsu lives past the first trial and goes on to unify the remaining students while coping with guilt and self-loathing.
  • Comments: Well-written and updated almost weekly, the story explores the changes and consequences that unfold due to Kaede's survival and Shuichi's execution. Everyone is accurately portrayed in-character while developing in ways differing from Canon. Each chapter is also laden with tricks, hints, and secrets that leave readers (even those who've completed V3) guessing.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Author's Summary "The first investigation was going exactly as the Mastermind hoped it would. And then Ouma picked up the ball."
  • Comments: A great AU fic that depicts how things would’ve gone if Shuichi saw through Kaede’s failed death trap, and the group correctly convicted Tsumugi in the first trial.
  • Pairing(s): Shuichi Saihara/Kaede Akamatsu, Maki Harukawa/Kaito Momota
  • Comments: This AU is as good, if not better than the story in the game itself. Everyone's more or less in-character, the character interactions are written with so much heart and care, and you might be surprised by certain plot twists that heads a lot differently than the actual game. As stated above, the first chapters already spoilt some late-game plot threads, so it's best to read this fic once you've completed the main story of DRV3.

  • Comments: Well-written with rich story telling, great characterization, and good mysterious for the Class Trials. Special mention goes to how Kaede has to mentally and emotionally struggle with the guilt of Rantaro's murder and Shuichi's sacrifice, as well as endure the growing strain from the Killing Game. Flawlessly characterised - everyone is well-portrayed, whilst still managing to be uniquely developed and fleshed out from Canon, and every trial and chapter twist is written in a way that makes you feel like you're replaying the game. • Synopsis: Shuuichi Saihara, Maki Harukawa, and Himiko Yumeno survived the fifty-third season of mutual killing... only to wake up and discover they've been in a virtual reality simulation the entire time. Stuck in a compound belonging to the film studio, the three survivors cope with the trauma they've endured... and hope that their lost friends will awaken too. Slight AU where the entirety of V3 took place in a virtual reality sim.
  • Comments: Absolutely stunning read. The author kept all the characters, well, in character, and spun an enthralling plot - that remains perfectly realistic. There wasn't a single part of it which wouldn't make me hold my breath. If you're not avoiding spoilers, please read this.

  • Summary: The game was a simulation, a story told before. The survivors wake up first, but something is wrong. Where's the studio? Where's the producers, the executives, the fans, the cameras? All that's there is an island, all too familiar. And people. People that shouldn't exist. After all, they should just be fictional.
  • Comments: An interesting twist on the "None of the characters in the game stay dead because it was a simulation like SD2" type of post-game story in that the second game's cast is there to help the survivors (and their friends) readjust to the world and deal with their various forms of PTSD as they wake up. The result is a mildly mindscrewy mystery as the V3 kids have an existential crisis as they know everything around them shouldn't be real, and the older former remnants of despair do their best to try and help these kids they found in a situation so similar to their own despite not knowing how they got into the pods in first place. Beautifully written with an eerie poetic quality at points and the characters seen thus far have all been very well done. Welcome to the Hope's Peak Academy Saga V3 cast. Hope you survive this experience and don't fall into despair.

Join the 1st Class of the Gifted Inmates Academy as they adjust to life at the school - and each other.
  • Comments: If you were disappointed by how underused the Prison School concept was in Dangan Ronpa V3 then this fic is for you. Every student has committed a crime that generally suits them to keep them in character, their interactions are fun to see, and their "wardens", the adult casts from DR3 and Despair Girls, are enjoyable without taking too much of the spotlight. As of posting this, it hasn't updated in a while, but it's still well worth a look.

  • Summary: Kaede Akamatsu, a seemingly normal girl, with a deathly powerful hand and a confusing array of abilities. A.K.A Kaede gets the knowledge of a fully spoiled player who loves the slapping mechanic just a little too much.
  • Comments: Crack, pure and simple, but delightful crack. Kaede becomes a hybrid of herself and a fully spoiled V3 player, and acts like it: slapping everything and everyone for Monocoins, being deathly suspicious of Tsumugi, and desperately trying to enter the school store when it's not appropriate to. Every word of this is mad beauty.

  • Synopsis: Author's Summary "You stand at a point and see two roads leading in different directions. One road, you already traveled. It's a road you became familiar with. The other road, however, you've yet to experience. Where shall this road take you? What will be waiting on the path? Will there even be a difference at all? Some things will never change, but things can be altered. This is an alternate road with an alternate experience. It alternates between familiar and unseen. This...is Alternate V."
  • Comments: An amazing AU fic that has a similar premise to Three-Point Shot (namely that Kaede is proven innocent and Tsumugi is revealed to be Rantaro's killer in the first class trial), and puts their own interesting spin on it. Combine that with keeping everyone so in-character that you'd think it was written by Kodaka himself and constantly subverting your expectations, you've got one hell of a story that is well worth a read.

  • Comments: A wonderful Talent Swap AU that manages to keep everyone in character. • Synopsis: A choice was made to change things before the 53rd season was set into motion, without the would-be mastermind's input. Shuichi Saihara would be made into the heavily advertised "lead" of the show, with his Ultimate Talent and hatless image on full display. Kaede Akamatsu, his "Perky female sidekick" character would be the surprise protagonist instead.
So a code monkey was set to work, changing their subconscious "programming" as needed, so Shuichi set the shot put ball trap into motion and lead to his execution.
But that was his story, this is her's. Now Kaede has to keep her friends safe while looking for a way to escape. Not knowing who she can't trust but trying to have faith in them all anyway. No matter how little some deserve it.
  • Comments: This is one of the few stories that kept me on my toes on trying to figure out who's going to survive, along with who can or cannot be trusted. Personally the first for me to see make use of the FTE with other characters hanging out with each other as oppose to just being limited to the POV of the protagonist.

  • Comments: Despite the seemingly simplistic premise, this story is so much more than meets the eye. A beautifully written, beautifully meta story. • Comments: Though it follows the same storyline as the original, there are some divergences from the canon version through the role swap between Hajime and Chiaki. Even if the characters retain their personality and pasts, their talent swap also affects their thoughts and actions. A very interesting change here is that Natsumi, Fuyuhiko’s younger sister, is in Class 77 as the Ultimate Yakuza, while the latter is in Reserve Course.

What could possibly go wrong? Apparently, everything.
  • Set in the same universe as Farewell to Thee, Normality, a flash-forward towards the events of Super Danganronpa 2. The 1st part of the Turnabout Talents series.
  • Comments: Just like for its prequel, though they begin with a similar motion, the story starts to diverge more and more from the original. Due to role swap, we follow the POV of Chiaki instead of Hajime. Taking account of how she isn’t an AI from the Future Foundation but an actual person here, her thoughts and actions affect the story differently.

Why are both of them pushing for deaths to happen? Is there really a conspiracy forming inside Diavolos Avante? What's going on with the Main Board?
  • Comments: A direct sequel to Graduate Meeting, continuing plot points established in the first story. However, just like Hope's Peak Academy's 78th class, Agro is knocked out upon arrival and convened in the school with 15 other Ultimates, where they are told by their captor Monokuma that they must commit the perfect murder to escape. However, as the mutual killing game proceeds, things become even less straightforward. It becomes clear that there are some things even out of Monokuma's control: what are the greater forces at play? It seems that the mutual killing game has a purpose beyond simply spreading despair: what is the ulterior goal of this situation? And one ominous name consistently shows up, promising answers to the cast that they may not like: just what is the story behind the "Weltall Reactor"?
  • Comments: Unique, choose-your-own adventure format with decisions that were made by the commenters. Colorful and likeable cast. Especially strong first and final arc - unorthodox, but rewarding.

The End of The Mutual Killing by Reading Forever

  • Status: Complete
  • Summary: Hope's Peak has been closed for quite a while already, everybody knows it. That's why Azalea Stravopoulos doesn't understand why she has been kidnapped and given an SHSL title. Since when is she the Super High School Level Motivator? She is way too old for high school, too! In a clearly virtual world, she and other fifteen Hostages have been pitted against each other, once again with one condition: Kill and get away with it to escape.
  • Comments: It's the last part of The World After The End Trilogy. RF is deviating from his style in the other two stories and so far it's much better written than the other parts.

Ultimate Danganronpa 3 by Maestro Infinite ([[Link)

  • Recommended by: Hirowriter
  • Status: Dead (last updated April 2017)
  • Synopsis: This story is canon to the whole Hope's Peak Saga, and takes place after Danganronpa 3. The story revolves around Akira Maita, a Reserve Course student, who got invited to join a special extracurricular course being held on October 32, 2015. However, he and the other nineteen students invited to join the extracurricular course get tricked by Monokuma and forced into a Mutual Killing Game. But what doesn't add up is how the history, in this case, contradicts with that of the real history. Furthermore, among the captives are those who shouldn't be there: Izuru Kamukura, Nagito Komaeda, Chihiro Fujisaki, Mukuro Ikusaba, Yasuke Matsuda, and Soshun Murasame (who looks nor acts nothing like the Soshun from the Grand Finale animation). This story will act as the Grand Finale to the completed Hope's Peak Academy Saga.
  • Comments: Rich story with drama, comedy, romance, angst, paranoia, and more. The writing style is comfortable and easy to keep up. It seems to be shaping up to be one of the longest Danganronpa fics ever written, too.

  • Synopsis: When Masaru Kurohiko agreed to be a part of Operation: Revival of Hope, led by Dr. Heizo Sasaki, he didn't realize how literal the name would turn out to be. Nor did he realize how much it would end up applying to him and Dr. Sasaki as well...
  • Comments: This story does a unique take on the concept of bringing the students who died during the events of the first game back to life, and also features well-written original characters. The first part of the story so far mainly focuses on how the original characters and the revived students deal with their new situation.

  • Synopsis: When sixteen teenagers are forced into a campsite, a strange little mascot appears telling them: kill or be killed. The question is who will survive.
  • Comments: A quick to impress cast with their own quirks and characteristics. Each character is interesting, and the killing game even features its own original mascot. Despite only being on its prologue at the time of this being written, this fangan has proven to be unique and endearing. It is sure to be one that you won't regret reading.

All twenty-one of them now have to struggle to stay alive in this new, twisted killing game. Everybody's favorite evil stuffed bear is back! Now Monokuma has trapped his students in the Suicide Forest.
  • Comments: Although it just started, the fic gives us good characters, which includes a funny, self aware narrator, a great setting, being the real place of the Suicide Forest, and enjoyable moments. It is very well written and is promised to become even better. There are already a bunch of mysteries and intrigue.

  • Synopsis: Clair Voyant and fourteen other students are accepted into Fortune's Light Academy, a U.S equivalent of Hope's Peak Academy. Their excitement is short-lived, however, as they soon find themselves kidnapped and forced to partake in a twisted game…a game of Mutual Killing. A Dangan Ronpa story written in script style, featuring an original plotline and characters.
  • Comments: Shows lots of hidden potential with twists and turns to the cases and characters. Also who doesn't love punny names for the characters via Ace Attorney style? The cast members have varying likeability, which gives it an interesting dynamic where students are not just trying to uncover the mysteries of their school, but overcome the drama resonating among them. People die and do so in painful and complicated ways in this edgier and cutthroat story that delves into an interesting perspective of what a Killing Game could be like.

  • Synopsis: Ultimates are capable liars. Ultimates are capable killers. Who gave these humans a right to believe that Ultimates aren't capable of murder? I'll prove them wrong, and I'll prove them wrong in this beautifully thrilling killing game.
  • Comments: Very descriptive and engaging. I especially love the theme of "truth vs. lies" and the protagonist's talent as a pseudologist is really different from talents such as Naegi's Ultimate Hope.

  • Synopsis: 16 students of Hope's Peak Academy suffering from memory loss find themselves imprisoned inside a fortress where the only way out is either die or kill and get away with the deed. To make matters worse, there are other parties involved to complicate the situation. What is the purpose of this cruel game? Will despair overshadow hope, or will hope shine in the darkness of despair?
  • Comments: Don't get fooled by its rather ordinary premise, this story is one of the most well-written SYOC on fanfiction.net. Full of twists and mysteries in the first case alone. Diverse cast, each with their own quirks, who often have fun playing with popular tropes. The protagonist, Amelda, is possibly one of the most endearing MC I’ve ever seen, with his calculating (he’s the SHSL Accountant, lol), yet humorous personality. Basically, it’s a must-read!

Comments: Smaller-than-usual cast, but they're very colorful and seem to be fun to be with!

  • Synopsis: Just six years after the reopening of Hope's Peak Academy, the next class of students find themselves trapped in a mysterious building by the sinister Monokuma. Sixteen go in, but how many will leave? Who will survive to the end? And just why was Hanako Minami ever admitted in the first place?
  • Comments: If you're looking for a fic that's more subversive of what one would expect from a fangan, then this is mandatory reading. All of the students are interesting, including the protagonist, and the cases feature enough twists and red herrings such that the killers are never obvious. Oh, and the author fully embraces the Anyone Can Die aspect of these stories. Seriously, if the first three chapters taught me anything, it's that none of the characters are safe, regardless of how important they seem.

Danganronpa: Resort of Mutual Killing by BlueShadow

  • Recommended by mads_in_zero
  • Synopsis: In a fairly standard Danganronpa set up, 16 students wake up in a seemingly abandoned hotel, eventually revealed to be trapped there by Monokuma, who forces everyone to participate in a Killing Game. The fic takes some cues from the Danganronpa games themselves, with Talent Rooms and even short Free Time Events. Investigations and trials are also both rendered very faithfully, with the fic including music and pseudo-interactivity in trials.
  • Comments: The cast is comprised of characters submitted by readers (as is common on the forum it's on), leading to a cast that feels very diverse while (thanks to Blue Shadow) still having great chemistry. At the time of this writing, the first trial is in progress, and although obviously shorter and faster paced than a real Danganronpa trial, the fic manages to hit many of the same beats, representing everything from Non-stop Debates to Rebuttal Showdowns.

Operation V.K. by KinuNishimura

  • Recommended by Ishi Matsu 615
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: The girl with the antenna awakens, in an unfamiliar location, with sixteen others; students, one and all, of the prestigious Hope's Peak Academy, a school to foster talent in the hearts of man. An unforgettable bear gives them the directive, of "kill, or be killed." To them, immaterial concepts such as "hope" or "despair" mean nothing. This is a battle between detective and culprit.
  • Comments: This is a hefty read to be sure, but it's worth it. All the characters are unique and interesting, the setting is incredibly different and not something seen before, the relationships are all well developed and believable, and there's more it could be praised for but it'd dive into serious spoiler territory. Each case keeps the reader guessing, and it doesn't hit the same beats most Fangans do. Well worth the time to read and seriously needs a tropes page at some point.

String Theory (NeoStarReset) by NeoStarReset

  • Recommended by: stomachurty
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Author's Summary, "Among the 17 Ultimates, the protagonist Prairie Marble has no memories of her past, nor is she able to retain the memories of flashback lights. All she knows is that she has memories from when she first awakens from a locker within the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles. Something about her is just too odd to ignore, even for an Ultimate, and Monokuma wants to get to the bottom of it. Will Prairie be able to survive the killing game and protect her peers? Or will Monokuma entice murder among them and taint their hearts with despair?"
  • Comments: If you could choose any Danganronpa OC fic to read, give this one a go. Not only does it make the protagonist a fun character to follow, but her interactions with the canon characters gives depth to them as well as Prairie. Not to mention how she approaches the presented mystery with her "perks" and disadvantages will grip the reader into trying to think their own solution, be it the overarching mystery or the murders that happen in each part. This is a fic that welcomes all readers whether they know nothing about the series or if they've already exhausted so much canon material that they're yearning for more — there's something to be found in String Theory that will be to the reader's enjoyment.
  • It is also on Fanfiction.net and Wattpad, with the added bonus of being able to view the author's wonderful art for the fanfic whether it be covers that change every four chapters or additional supporting material.

  • Pairing(s): Mukuro/Sayaka

  • Pairing(s): Mikan/Fuyuhiko and various other minor pairings
  • Comments: Non-despair AU. Even though it's rare pair fic, it was magnificently written. The characters are on-point, and the story is light-hearted and comedic in nature. There are many parts where you would be stifling laughter and then the next, you would feel like crying. • Pairings: Makoto Naegi/Kyoko Kirigiri
  • Comments: A well-written Naegiri fic that centers around Kyoko growing attached to Class 78, namely one Makoto Naegi. Relatively low-key, and focuses on character development. Clocking in at over 200k words, it'll definitely eat up some of your time, but it's a very pleasant read that definitely deserves more love. The author has also written multiple fluff fics that expand on parts of the story.

  • Summary: Junko has always been the only person in Mukuro's life who mattered until she attends Hope's Peak Academy and a cheerful idol with the name of Maizono Sayaka begins making her way into her heart.
  • Pairing(s): Mukuro/Sayaka
  • Comments: An incredibly well-written romance between two characters that are sadly often ignored in fanwork. It manages to make the pairing feel completely natural, and in addition gives Mukuro, Sayaka, and even Junko a surprising amount of complexity and backstory that could both easily fit into the Dangan Ronpa canon, to the point where you could almost call it a character study along with a shipping fic, while also refreshingly avoiding the easy way out and excusing the atrocities committed by Mukuro by merely showing her as Junko's victim. Adding to that, the loveable, often hilarious supporting characters and Mukuro's awkwardness make for great comedy, while the hauntingly realistic depiction of abuse and one of the more disturbing portrayals of Junko you'll see in fanfiction shift the tone into something far more sinister and tragic, all of which the author balances out very well.

Her Ideal by LyricalSniperRifle

  • Recommended by: Aeon1337
  • Status: Complete/Oneshot
  • Pairing(s): Shuichi Saihara/Miu Iruma
  • Comments: This is for those put off by the original ending of Miu's Love Suite Event, in which she intends to force herself on Shuichi. Here, Shuichi addresses Miu's abandonment issues by promising to remain by her side. He also declines her request to make a baby with her by pointing out that she is afraid of losing him, and he could not bring himself to take advantage of her while she is this vulnerable, moving her to tears. This rewrite explores Miu's abandonment issues in a bit more depth, whereas it was only glossed over in the original game. Shuichi also does a much better job of handling the situation, especially considering Miu's abandonment issues, and manages to make the situation end on a much more pleasant note for the both of them. It also does a very good job at preserving the characterisation, and the one-sentence epilogue, in which Miu asks Shuichi if he is still going to plow her into the mattress, sounds like something that she would say after sobering up from a heart-to-heart with him.

She fears him more than she trusts him, but he claims he has been rooting for her all along. Could his ambiguous morality be the perfect contrast to her sense of justice? Will despair be the birth of true hope after all?
  • Comments: I know right away some people will be turned off by such a rarepair, but the author manages to keep both characters very much in-character, the way they talk, behave and even the dry humor the franchise is (in)famous for makes its way into it, I really recommend it!

Puella Magi Makoto Magica by zenonaa

  • Crossover with Puella Magi Madoka Magica, spoilers for both stories
  • Status: Finished
  • Summary: A fusion fic that puts the cast of Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc into a Puella Magi-verse, some of them playing out the roles of the major characters in PMMM! In this continuity, boys can be magical girls too, and they're still called that (hence the title). The characters are well-written, and there are passing references to bits of DR canon. There's clearly a lot of thought in this. Pairings aren't the focus, but there is a bit of Ishimondo, Naegiri, TogaFuka, and Sakuraoi, as well as hints of others.

Facets by guyfierimpreg

  • Crossover with Persona, Fusion Fic.
  • Status: Dead; last updated February 2019
  • Synopsis: With a specialty in solving impossible cases, a run-of-the-mill double homicide is nothing to Kirigiri, but what started as an average case quickly devolves into a serial murder case held together by an intricate web of hearsay as Hope’s Peak students are found hanging from power lines with no cause of death. Everything she has ever known will be challenged as she races against a force unseen to unravel the truth in the sea of lies, even as rumors mysteriously start coming true and reality itself seems to be falling apart at the seams. But will it be enough?
  • Comments: An entertaining cross, albeit one that cheerfully relies on spoilers - even in the first chapter, there's Junko confessing to being a Self-Made Orphan to her sister as part of the teaser for the rest of the fic and the Shadow World here being the Jabberwock Islands, with Chiaki being called out as its AI native. First two chapters are introduction, and as of the fourth one Kirigiri has barely escaped her Shadow Self and is forming her first Social Link.
  • Seconding this rec. Notable for having a very rare in-character Komaeda and including content from the first two Persona games, whereas most crossovers only focus on the later entries.

  • Status: Finished
  • Synopsis: A quirky story with characters made on WWE 2K14 custom character maker. It really captures the witty writing from Danganronpa (one word, not two) series. It is really stupid at first, but by Chapter 5, it becomes utterly amazing. Kirigiri and Monokuma are a little bit Oo C at first, but at least Kirigiri's part is handled pretty well later in the story. Really entertaining and definetly worth watching until the end, despite the slow start.

Maybe it won't be so bad... Fairy Tail seems like a nice place. Look out Fiore, here comes the Earth Dragon Slayer! (Spoilers for DR1)
  • Comments: A unique crossover with a very intriguing premise. Makoto manages to both feel right at home at the Fairy Tail guild hall, while still contributing noticeably to the events of canon.

Holy Diver by Zatroopa (Link)

  • Recommended by: Space Cowboy
  • Crossover with: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Fifteen students, trapped in a school where they are forced to play a Mutual Killing Game. Makoto Naegi may be your average student with peculiar luck, but with hope in his heart, he fights to uncover the truth of the Mastermind and end this nightmare. With the Ultimate Detective, Kirigiri Kyouko, and the Ultimate Male Model, Dio Brando, surely he cannot fail. Can he?
  • Comments: For a story that changes things by having Dio Brando become the Big Bad of the series, it does it extremely well. Changes are sometimes subtle and sometimes major, and while the story itself is minimalist it helps the story and reader by directly addressing the major points in a way that doesn't seem too jarring. All the characters are written in a way true to their series, and Dio is able to transition into the Big Bad position in a way that fits the Danganronpa themes. There is even a one-shot chapter focusing on Jonathan that manages to portray him as he was in Phantom Blood without coming off as cheesy. Worth a look for fans of either series.

JoJo's Despair-Filled Adventure by Zatroopa

And so begins a hundred-year battle between the Joestar family and the Despair Sisters! The battle between Hope and Despair begins.
  • Comments: Written by the same author who did the above fanfic, Jojo's Despair-Filled Adventure tackles the plot of JJBA, this time with Junko and Mukuro (or at least, their Victorian English counterparts) as the antagonists of the series. No one is out of character, and Judith's journey from beggar to Big Bad is portrayed in a way that combines the crazy awesomeness of JoJo and Danganronpa. Like Holy Diver, this one is also worth a look for fans of either series.

However, everything changed when he was selected by Hope’s Peak Academy as a test subject for a secret project and was told that he’d be given a talent of his very own. Now, Hinata can hold his head high and become someone he can finally be proud of...? Follow the path of Izuku Midoriya and Hajime Hinata, and witness the birth of Hope’s Peak Academy’s Ultimate Hope and Japan’s newest Symbol of Peace.
  • Comments: A very good story that has the Hope's Peak staff hide Izuru Kamakura by transferring him to U.A's Class 1-A and has him have a foil in the form of Izuku. The story proceeded's to follow both the canon of MHA and a retelling of Danganronpa 3 Despair without the controversial elements of Ryota mitarai and the despair video, leading up to the tragedy. The additions are that of the merging of the world of heroes and those with talents, Izuru being in Class 1-A and how that affects the plot, and Nagito's luck leads him to be absent to the death of Chiaki Nanami and the indirect brainwashing of Class 77-B of hopes peak as a result.

  • Crossover with: My Immortal (not exactly a crossover, but it's close enough)
  • Synopsis: Monokuma decided that a Cruel and Unusual Death wasn't enough for the losers of the Mutual Killing Game. So he decided to torture them in the afterlife. How? By forcing them to read My Immortal. Each chapter has a trio of students (or two of them plus Monokuma) reading and reacting to the chapters.
  • Comments: This is simply brilliant. My Immortal is hilarious enough by itself, but add the comments of the dead characters and it becomes hysterical. Celestia deserves a special mention as she tries to hide her Closet Geek nature, but in general it's quite enjoyable to see the characters snarking at the biggest crackfic ever made.

  • Notes: While the story is still relatively young, the quality is rather impressive for a Yu-Gi-Oh! fanfic. draconichero makes every duel detailed and easy to follow while keeping characters consistent and in character. While it's only in Battle City right now, there are plans to expand up through Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds apparently and plans to have Junko's killing game still happen.

So Tricky offers an ultimatum: Eliminate a member of the guild, and be allowed to leave. But surely no one here would go that far for the sake of freedom... right?
  • Notes: A few grammatical mistakes here and there, but overall a well-made story with an engaging cast, plenty of visuals, and an intriguing plot. The script-style writing feels true to the gameplay of both franchises. PokéRonpa will keep you both laughing and crying until the very end. The author has recently announced a sequel on the hub website, so keep your eyes out!

However after entering, he finds himself trapped with his fifteen fellow students in a killing game of despair ran by Master Hand. Will the students all fall into despair and kill each other or will Link find a way to bring hope to everyone and stop Master Hand? Warning: Major Character Deaths
Comments: This story is really interesting. It is an adaptation of the original Danganronpa, but with the OG 12 from Smash 64, Ryu, Cloud, Bayo, and Zelda as the students. And every case other then the first (which is pretty much identical to the original game) pulls twists you don't see coming such as Master Hand, the Monokuma of this story, getting executed as the fourth murderer. And there isn't a double murder! The sequel is equally good, and while it does carry some things from the original SDR2 including the infamous despair disease motive... but in this one of the two victims was the one infected and not the actual murderer of the case...

  • Comments: A retelling of The Stand with Danganronpa characters, first two chapters are long but the rest are shorter. Does include content from the original book, such as violence, death, and disturbing sex content. Read the tags before jumping in. Pairings are involved, mainly Makoto/Sayaka and Leon/Kaede, with Kaito/Maki and Chihiro/Aoi as more minor ones and a number of one-sided relationships. Almost every character in the franchise makes an appearance.

Including, but not limited to, a group of talking penguins, a talking octopus who's also in charge of the money-hungry mafia known as Daft Capo, an eccentric 'mad scientist', and a maid catgirl who happens to be one hell of a chuunibyou.
  • Comments: Despite the silly-sounding premise, the story actually proves to be rather solid in regards to its grammar, worldbuilding, characterization and humor. All in all, it's a fun ride to go through, so better strap in and brace yourselves in for the ingenuity and insanity it's gonna hop up to.

  • Comments: You might be thinking this is just a crack fanfic but really it is not. It has one of the most interesting ideas to it and its twist and turns due make it the most interesting fanfic to read. It also helps this has CG's just like how the games due and it works to make it more like a video game and hey you get to see the most weirdest of crossovers come alive like Nagito and Sans. It makes it worth it.
    • Seconded so much! I went into this story expecting a complete crack fic, but it was surprisingly heartfelt and all of the executions, the first one in particular, were complete gut punches.
  • Has an ongoing sequel - DanganRonpa 69 Ultra Despair Gang: Really, ANOTHER Episode?

Danganronpa: Crossing Despair: A Mutli-Anime Crossover by darkblade

  • Recommended by Bat Packer
  • Crossover with: Many different anime
  • Status: Dormant; last updated January 2019
  • Synopsis: Taking place inside Monokuma's own mansion (Yes he has one) 17 characters have been placed to participate in this murder mansion mystery with them being the killers and victims. Can Kogami the SHSL Puzzle Master be able to undercover all the mysterious in this haunted estate or will he fall victim to Monokuma or the numerous anime characters trap with him? Basically this is a story about characters from different animes being trap in the same format of Danganronpa. Style inspired by works from Kitt and Magorgle.
  • Comments: With a unique cast of characters from many different anime, this fic has interesting character interactions and a nice mix of humor and mystery. Already off to a strong start, this fic shows great promise.

  • Synopsis: Welcome to Monokumaland, the Unhappiest Place on Earth! Sixteen students from various worlds have been trapped inside an amusement park at the whims of its sinister (yet strangely cuddly) mascot, and the only way out is to get away with murder!
  • Comments: A Massive Multiplayer Crossover between seventeen different series. Kyon makes a fantastic protagonist, and everyone manages to be written perfectly in-character. The first case alone has been full of twists and turns, and it promises to have many more in the future.

  • Synopsis: (Author's summary—) Monokuma hosts yet another killing game, this time with 17 individuals from other worlds! How original. Taking place in Monocity, The City That Never Sleeps... Without One Eye Open.
  • Comments: A bit of a slow start, but the story starts to pick up quite a lot. Ai Mizuno is a well rounded protagonist who is forced to pick up a leadership role once again in quite a dysfunctional group. Character interactions are well done, the many cameos of certain Danganronpa stars are enjoyable. A tropes page could work if done well. Quite a spectacular Massive Multiplayer Crossover overall.

Academy. Along with fifteen other Cartoon Network characters, they play a sadistic game where the only way out is to kill someone and not get caught.
  • Comments: A really fun story that keeps everyone in character. Courage himself is an interesting take on the Danganronpa protagonist role and there are several twists in the story that caught me off guard, along with several shake ups of the DR1 motives and formula.

  • Crossover with: BoJack Horseman, , Death Note, Cookie Run, Yuppie Psycho, Doki Doki Literature Club!!, Ao Oni, ENA, Your Turn to Die, Aggretsuko, Breaking Bad, The Disastrous Lifeof Saiki K

  • Synopsis: Being awoken on an island with no collective memory of how you got there, only to be forced into a death game with a bunch of strangers who appear to be rather... interesting to say the least, by a sadistic mechanical animal and a company you know nothing about except for their name, would be a less than pleasant, and more so impossible, situation, right?Unfortunately for Hayasaka, that reality is all too real. Whether he likes it or not, blood thirst will arise. It's not up to him, after all. He's just a nobody in the group, right? Who will take the plunge into murder? Who will find themselves nothing but a corpse the morning after? And, well, more importantly, will the Devil befriend me for this? (My 2ND killing game after Dangan Ronpa 69 - I never learn, do I?)

  • Comments: From the mind behind Danganronpa 69 this fanfic once again brings crazy into a whole new meaning. We got the same good old cgis to make it feel like a game and now we got some vidoes too for the deaths of the killer! With the character interactions and questions about what the hell is going on this will bring you into an even crazer time then 69.

The Lucidity of the Descent by Devicing

  • Recommended by: Halogen
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Crossover with: The World Ends with You
  • Synopsis: From the moment he wakes up, Momota knows he’s lost something. It’s not his bag, still slung over his shoulder, or the wallet jabbing awkwardly into his hip where it’s pressed to the ground beneath him. As he pushes himself up off the pavement and up onto one arm, the absence feels painfully obvious—a strange vacuum somewhere in the hollow of his chest, a single cog missing from an intricate machine still running yet still somehow off. The Ikebukuro Station East sign looms over him. Above it, the familiar jumbotron screen flickers with dazzling multicolored lights. In lieu of the usual Seibu Lions highlight reels and idol advertisements, there is a single phrase. "Rise and (Sun)shine!" it screams. "You Have 7 Days!". For the myth to be tragic, the hero must be conscious of the absurdity. To truly feel the weight of one's own life, one would would have to remember it, first.
  • Comments: While it first looks like the fic's going to be following the plot of TWEWY, it quickly becomes clear the storyline is its own and even takes place in a different district of Tokyo, which definitely makes for an interesting read as you never know what's about to happen. The writing is great and neither too intense nor too light, switching between easy-going and 'what the hell just happened'. Overall, a solid recommend.

The Perfect Minus and the Ultimate Despair by Anonymous

  • Recommended by: Ratty Hatty
  • Crossover with: Medaka Box
  • Status: Complete; Last work remains dormant
  • Synopsis: Kumagawa Misogi transfers to Hope’s Peak Academy with the intention of destroying it, only to find it’s in the middle of its destruction. There he meets Enoshima Junko the self proclaimed queen of despair, and as king of the minus from the moment they meet they begin a rivalry between their two differing definitions of despair.
  • Comments: A story where two villains meet that sends the whole universe into true despair. The writer perfectly mixes both worlds together to generate one of the best crossover stories I have ever read. It swaps the protagonist and the antagonist of Medaka Box that delves deeper into Kumagawa’s character and backstory while making Medaka’s boring personality so much more interesting. All of the characters of both series are given their moment to shine and are not disregarded. And the romance is so masterfully done here. I can’t fit every detail here, but, this fanfic is definitely a must-read if you’re into romance and psychology. This series has a lot of psychology, and I mean it. It’s just unfortunate that the last part remains to be finished.
