Tropes:

  • Artistic License – History: Brave takes place several centuries before Tangled and Frozen. This goes ignored.
  • Ascended Extra: The Stabbington Brothers have more screen time than in their movie. They're even given names.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Several.
    • In Chapter 1, Elinor comments that Fergus' wooden leg is loud and gives him away. His leg actually does foil his escape attempt in Chapter 17.
    • Kristoff's wedding rings introduced in Chapter 2 help bring back part of Merida's memories in Chapter 29.
    • When Merida and Hans first meet in the tower, Merida says "Don't move, or I'll send this arrow straight through your heart!". She references this again when Hans reveals his plans to wed her and produce an heir. Of course, Merida does eventually kill him this way by Chapter 32.
    • Hans first offers Merida some wine in Chapter 13. It's later revealed to be a magic spell.
  • Chess Motif: The fic uses chess pieces as very heavy symbolism for the characters.
    • Elsa is the White/Black Queen, depending on her progression in the story.
    • Hans was thought to be the Black King, later revealed to be a pawn.
    • Klaus is revealed to be the Black King.
  • Crossover: A three-way crossover between Frozen, Tangled, and Brave. Though, the Frozen cast seems to be a major focus.
  • Darker and Edgier: Not completely dark, but does deal with heavier subject matter than in the original movies. Elsa's main plotline involves overcoming the hate that has consumed her powers, and Merida tries many times to kill her captor.
  • Disney Death: Elsa is resurrected by one of Rapunzel's healing tears.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: Rapunzel and Anna both have dreams that feature past events but foreshadow future ones.
    • Anna dreams about her parents dying while Hans tries to kill her with a sword. During the stand off at the ice palace, Anna sees Elsa dying, while Hans tries to kill her with a sword.
    • Rapunzel dreams about Gothel stabbing Eugene in the tower, only their roles are replaced by Hans and Elsa respectively. Hans does end up fatally injuring Elsa in her side, and Rapunzel must try to make a similar deal to save her life.
  • Fake Memories: Hans manipulates Merida's memories with a potion, convincing her to marry him and turn on her friends.
  • Foreshadowing: Used frequently.
    • In Chapter 2, the chapter ends as a shadow casts over Elsa, making her blue dress appear black. Her ice does turn black later, while she's struggling with her hatred.
    • Anna often has haunting visions of Hans swinging his sword before she froze. Hans does attack her again with a sword, only he was the one to freeze instead.
    • During her sword lesson, Grant tells Anna to never take her eyes off of her attacker, yet she does because she sees Elsa's ship. Later, she takes her eyes off of Hans because Elsa is wounded.
    • Hans first tries to kill Elsa by stabbing her side with a sword, which fails. He succeeds later by shooting her in the side instead.
    • During their first stand off, Elsa doesn't attack Hans because he threatened Merida with a sword. During their last stand off, Elsa doesn't attack Hans because he threatened Anna with a sword.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Grant goes through this, realizing he was fighting for the wrong family.
    • The Stabbington brothers also get redemption, deciding to help the heroes.
  • Instant Armor: Elsa creates a full suit of ice armor in the middle of a sea battle.
  • Last-Second Chance: Elsa offers this to Hans, reminding him forgiveness is the only way to thaw his heart.
  • Lost at Sea: Anna after the lifeboat she hid in was cut loose. Made worse by her fear of sailing.
  • Maternal Death? Blame the Child!: Hans is blamed by his older brothers for the death of his mother. Even he points out how ridiculous this is.
Hans: You're still blaming me for that? She died in childbirth!
  • My Eyes Are Up Here: Elsa says this to the Stabbington Brothers, humorously lifting their chins up with ice spikes.
  • Mythology Gag: There are some references made to the early production of Frozen and Tangled, as well as their original fairy tales.
    • Rapunzel wears a green dress for most of the fic, and uses a crossbow in most battle scenes. This is a reference to early concept art depicting Rapunzel with a green dress and wielding a crossbow.
    • Rapunzel is pregnant with twins, just like the original fairy tale.
    • When the Southern Isles princes arrive at Elsa's ice palace, she greets them with "Good evening gentlemen. Why are you on my mountain?" This is a nod to an early storyboard for the movie, in which an evil Elsa greets wandering guards.
    • Elsa's inner conflict comes to a head in a vision with a mirror. The mirror was from the original Snow Queen story.
    • Additionally, Elsa is confronted by her evil self in the mirror. It takes the same appearance as the evil Elsa found in Frozen's concept art.
    • Early in the story, Anna and Merida ask Rapunzel to tell them how she had escaped Mother Gothel's captivity. Feeling a little queasy, Rapunzel asks Eugene to tell them the story, saying, "You tell it better than I do anyway." Eugene begins his narrative with "This is the story of how I died..." just like he did in Tangled. When Rapunzel recovered from her nausea, she interrupted him at the end of his recounting; "After years and years of asking and asking, I finally said yes."
      Rapunzel: Eugene...
      Eugene: Alright, I asked her.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: There are a few instances of this, usually with Elsa.
    • When Elsa and Hans face off at Dun Broch, Hans notes how similar they are after seeing how deep her hatred has become.
Hans: We're a lot alike Elsa, it's too bad you'll never see that
    • Anna points out how similar Merida and Elsa's backstories are, as both thought they lost a family member that they longed to be closer with.
    • Grant tells Elsa how he regrets shutting Hans out in their youth. Elsa is saddened by this, remembering her own childhood with Anna.
  • Pregnant Badass: Rapunzel. Pregnancy doesn't stop her from using a crossbow, sneaking into enemy territory, and walking into a dangerous snowstorm.
  • Redemption Rejection: Hans does this when Elsa gives him his Last-Second Chance.
  • Running Gag: Merida always ruins her dress.
  • Taking You with Me: Hans, realizing he will die, decides to kill Elsa and attempts to kill Anna before he freezes.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Hans goes through this at the ice palace. About to freeze to death, he becomes more desperate to get revenge than to carry out his plans for an empire.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Both Eugene and Kristoff call out Elsa for her actions. Eugene scolds Elsa for hurting Rapunzel, albeit unintentionally. Kristoff vocally disapproves of her freezing Hans' heart and lying about it to Anna.
  • World of Action Girls: All the main characters to some extent. Elsa and Merida fight more than Rapunzel and Anna, but they have their badass moments too.
