Fanfic / The Flash and the Flame

Go To

Flash Fire by Dark Elements 10 is the first in The Flash and The Flame series that followed CW's The Flash with the inclusion of fire metahuman OC, Cadence Nash.

Flash Fire is the first story in the ongoing series, that follows fire metahuman Cadence Nash as she navigates the world that is Central City after the Particle Accelerator explosion that created The Flash. When first meeting Barry Allen, she knows something's different about him but doesn't quite confirm it until later. Since meeting the two work together to save Central City from the new wave of metahumans, but Barry doesn't know Cadence's life is filled with secrets. Including one that has to do with him. The series was started in 2015 with four other stories in the series so far, Crossfire,Fuel to the Fire, Friction, and Burn. Originally having the plot of The Flash episodes in the background, the stories in the series are now novelizations that encompass seasons 1, 2 and 3 with Dark Elements 10 throwing in original plots, new metas, and change events of the show to fit her story plots.

The Flash and the Flame provides examples of:

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Much like in the show, Caitlin gets drunk when going to sing karaoke. Though this time, she also conducts a plan with Cadence to run off and get married and only consider the men in their lives as 'breeding stock'.
    • There are five stages to Cadence's perky level with 'drunk Cade' being one of them. Though this has yet to be seen, Cadence says she gets 'totally out of it' when drunk.
    • Averted. Barry can't get drunk, though who knows what would happen with a drunk speedster.
  • Anti-Hero: Could be asked of Cadence as she is a hero and has a passion of helping people, but is also a proponent of thinking that killing is a good way to go when the time comes. She and Barry argue over this numerous times as to whether or not killing is the way to deal with a meta or a criminal.
  • Artistic License: Because this is a work of fanfiction there are multiple things within the story (re: injuries, criminal charges, etc.) that can be outright questioned as to whether or not it's possible in reality.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Barry and Cadence. They work hard to learn how to fight together as well as each other to aid their work on the field.
  • Battle Butler: Averted. As rich as Cadence's family is and how often she goes back to Metropolis, her family doesn't have a butler that gets in on the fights.
  • Battle Couple: Barry and Cadence.
  • Berserk Button: Don't mention Barry's mother in a negative light. Ever.
    • Betrayal. Barry gives a good The Reason Why You Suck Speech to Cadence in Flash Fire.
    • Never threaten Brady in Cadence's presence. Never threaten Caitlin in Cadence's presence. Actually, never threaten Team Flash in Cadence's presence, ever.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Brady, he's a sweet little kid. But once he gets his powers he goes and fights along with the rest of them, often begging to go into battle. Also, VERY protective of his mother.
  • Brain Bleach: Readers may need this considering the gore that is found within the stories.
  • Butt-Monkey: Cadence teases Barry a lot and he's even said that he hasn't found many things that he can tease HER about.
  • Children Are Innocent: Averted. There is a plot point that kids aren't safe from being attacked or injured by evil metas and criminals all through Fuel to the Fire and seen so far in Friction.
  • Continuity Nod: There are moments repeatedly referenced to from previous stories as flashbacks or warnings not to do something the same way twice.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Cadence's parents and Ryder call her 'Cadey-Cat'.
  • Glad-to-Be-Alive Sex: Chapter 32 of Fuel to the Fire.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When Barry's eyes flash with lightning or Cadence's flicker with flames, something bad is about to happen to the enemy sometime soon.
  • Happily Married: Kent and Maya Nash.
  • Heh Heh, You Said "X": A LOT of Cadence's double entendres and innuendo as well as what she can interpret from what other people say
  • Hero-Worshipper: Brady to Barry. Similarly, Conner to Barry and Leah to Cadence.
  • Ironic Echo: A LOT of the teasing lines Barry and Cadence exchange.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Actually, a lot of the characters in the fic, even OCs, have moments of this, showing in certain situations that'd make people act out of their norm.
  • Meanwhile Scene: Multiple action chapters through the Flash and the Flame series has things happen simultaneously. Such as Brady going after Metallo while Team Flash are at the press conference for the Metahuman Registration Act in Fuel to the Fire.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Because of their close bromance, Barry and Cisco are questioned to be gay by Cadence. Which is ironic because...
  • No Bisexuals: Averted. Cadence is openly bisexual and even comments on the guys and girls she's attracted to.
  • Noodle Incident: A lot of Cadence's and Brady's background. A few that stand out are the mentions of Powerduff Football in high school where Cadence played football and Ryder was the cheerleader, multiple hi-jinks Cadence and Ryder got into while in high school, and Brady managing to get toast stuck to the ceiling of an old apartment.
    • A lot of moments that Barry and Iris had as children; one big one being when they stole and wrecked Joe's brand new car when they were teens.
  • Not So Above It All: Caitlin isn't so uptight that she won't jump on a moon bounce.
  • Oh, Crap!: Comes around a lot when something of a villain is realized.
  • Official Couple: Barry and Cadence.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted. Though if reading the stories too quickly, Barry and Brady can be easy to get mixed up. Plus, there are a lot of main characters with names that start with 'C' (Caitlin, Cisco, and Cadence).
    • Subverted. Cadence's superhero name was originally 'Flash Fire' but she demanded it to be changed as she wanted to be her own hero and not riding Barry's coattails.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: Averted and Subverted. Averted as Barry was actually pretty normal in high school. Subverted as not only did Cadence have her powers then, but she was also pregnant at 16.
  • Running Gag: In a somewhat sad example, Cadence/Flare being sidelined for Barry's/The Flash's fame. To the point that during the Flash Day celebrations, the flyer read Flash 'and Flare' in tiny letters.
    • Cadence: "No fair, I wish I could [insert something that aids travel here]" Anyone else: "You can teleport!"
  • Secret-Keeper: Multiple characters are told, figure out, or are revealed the identities of Barry and Cadence. Conner even knows Oliver is the Arrow with little to no help from anyone else as revealed in Fuel to the Fire.
  • Shipper on Deck: Cisco admits that he 'ships' Barry and Cadence.
  • Sherlock Scan: Barry and Cadence both show their abilities with this. Barry from studying police work and being a CSI and Cadence being trained to do it by the Assassination Bureau. It ultimately aids Barry's new ability of being able to sense all outcomes of a current, and potentially dangerous, event.
  • So Proud of You: Has been said a lot throuhgout the series. Most of them come from parental moments; from Joe or Henry or Barry, Cadence to Brady, and Cadence's parents, Kent and Maya, to Cadence when they revealed they were proud of Cadence despite their initial fury of her being pregnant at sixteen.
  • The Chessmaster: Eobard Thawne.
    • Also, Cadence as revealed in Crossfire to take down the Assassination Bureau. Now, whether or not she learned it from him...
  • The Missus and the Ex: Subverted. Barry is 'The Missues' and Ryder is 'The Ex' though Cadence and Ryder are good friends and Barry and Ryder get over the issues they have with each other very easily.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Cadence is deathly afraid of insects, she doesn't bode well when he and Barry go after some Meta-Spiders in Fuel to the Fire.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Notably, Geomancer in Fuel to the Fire.
