Action Bomb: Marcus and Stephan. Once potioned, Marcus has about five minutes to get the potion off of him until the runes blow him up while Stephan keeps enough C4 on him to level a two story building should he be hit with potion.
Adaptational Badass: Several background characters, like Lyra, Cheerilee, Zecora, Vinyl Scratch and others, become grizzled resistance fighters. Sweetie Belle is especially notable, given that she lives in Zecora's old hut in the forest.
Subverted. While we do have bastards such as the TCB!Mane 6, we also have ponies such as Lyra and Cheerilee who are just two of the many pony resistance fighters. And this is not counting the nominally canon Mirror Universe ponies who are immediately horrified when they learn what their TCB counterparts are doing.
Canon!Spike's view of Marcus, since in Spike's eyes he attacked and nearly killed his friends for no reason.
TCB!Equestria's use of Zeppelins has been confirmed by Redskin to be purely coincidental with the idea that skyliners (also confirmed to be Equestrian equivalents to cruse liners) could be adapted for military use.
Redskin122004: "Some new changed new foal thought it would be great if they can use them in the 'good fight' for earth, passed it on to Twilight who began to set up the ships to be refitted for defense and potions, and improve magical to help power it."
Played straight with concrete.
Alien Invasion: TCB!Equestria's arrival on Earth. Though it wasn't apparent until sometime after their arrival.
Notable not just for being this, but TCB Equestria appears to be four years ahead of Canon Equestria chronologically. This leads to problems when Marcus assumes he only traveled through time and decides to "prevent" the war by killing Celestia.
Due to some of the Recursive Fanfiction that came about from this story, the author has announced that he is setting up an "alternate universe" of the Spectrum verse.
Discord apparently loves to travel to different universes for kicks.
America Saves the Day: While the day is not quite saved yet, Marcus, a US Marine is responsible for getting Princess Celestia's help to fight the Queen.
Amputation Stops Spread: If you remove the limb where the potion hit, there is a chance you won't get transformed. Unless you're hit in the face or the chest, then you're screwed.
An Arm and a Leg: During the attack on Washington D.C., Marcus shoots off an FBI agent's arm after his hand was hit with potion.
Marcus (describing the potion): "Rewrites a person into a pony... changes their body, their mind, binds their soul in chains... takes them away from you."
In a preview of a future chapter, Stephan learns that the TCB versions of the Mane Six aren't really in control of themselves, and can only watch themselves commit the atrocities they have against the humans.
And This Is for...: Marcus breaks one of Canon!Applejack's legs because he mistook her for her TCB counterpart, who had taken his family from him.
Anger Born of Worry: TCB!Derpy has this reaction when Doctor Whooves pushes himself too far in his work.
Spitfire: "Derpy loves you with all of her heart, but she will bring Luna's wrath on your head once she finds you missing."
Angst Nuke: Try AngstTunguska - when Celestia absorbs Marcus' memories, she's so horrified by what she sees that she flies to "Ponguska, Sibearia" and creates an explosion that results in a massive crater.
Antagonist in Mourning: In chapter 12 we learn that TCB!Flim and Flam of all ponies were present at TCB!Granny Smith's side during her last days where TCB!Applejack was not.
A Class 3 event that has already passed for the Changelings and the Reindeer in the TCB-verse, and is Queen Celestia's plan for the Gryphons, Minotaurs, Humans, and is implied for the Zebras.
Also a Class 5 for most of Europe and sections of Africa.
In chapter three, Canon!Twilight says that a Class X scenario would happen if all of Equestria just directly teleported onto Earth.
A Class 4 may happen worldwide thanks to the Yellowstone mega volcano, which has nukes buried underground at its weakest points, to be detonated if mankind's loss appears imminent.
Artifact of Doom: The Bag of Tirek appears to be responsible for TCB!Celestia's corruption.
Artistic License - Military: Marcus, a Marine, is a Commander, a Navy rank. The correct USMC equivalent is Lieutenant Colonel. However, he is the acting Commander of the PHL, which is a paramilitary organization, so it could be referring to that. Later in the story, there are a few blink-and-you'll-miss-it mentions of him being a Colonel in the Marine Corps itself.
Ascended Fridge Horror: Starvation, a side-story focusing on war refugees, was written by the very same troper who wrote the entry on the fridge page that questioned what happened to the refugees when half the world was unable to produce food.
Authority Equals Asskicking: Commander Marcus, who has shown more than once he knows how to kick ass to the third degree. Hell, he even made Princess Celestia bleed for the first time in centuries.
Marcus is somewhere between this and Asskicking Equals Authority; he started getting authority because he kicked ass (or at least survived where everyone else died), and once he had authority he ended up getting all the cool new toys for better asskicking.
Princess Celestia and Luna, who were ready to beat Marcus into the ground due to him damn near killing the Mane 6.
Celestia also plans to lead her troops into battle against Queen Celestia.
Bad Future: The TCB timeline in general. Good God.
Baleful Polymorph: The potion will turn anything it makes contact with (with the exception of other Ponies) into a perpetually smiling zombie pony loyal to the Queen, and will praise her nonstop.
Battle Aura: Not a visible one, but Marcus' runes send out a blast of telekinetic force whenever he releases the magic built up in them.
Battle Cry: What Queen Elizabeth's final address became.
Be Careful What You Wish For: In chapter 11 one of Marcus's memories showed that he had brought Cheerilee to Washington DC because she wanted the PHL to take a more active role in fighting the Tyrant. The visit coincided with a major Newfoal attack.
Beat the Curse Out of Him: Marcus tries to get Stalwart Heart (formerly his brother Jacob) to snap out of the Queen's control by beating it out of him. It doesn't work.
The Newfoals are Extreme Doormats, no question about it, but they will at least try to kick your ass if you hurt one of the Elements of Harmony, insult the Queen or say anything negative about Equestria.
If you want to live, don't EVER harm Derpy. Otherwise the Doctor will kill you.
Marcus visits Equestria for the first time, which isn't so much pressing a button as it is holding it down so hard the thing could break.
Upon meeting Prince Blueblood for the first time, we get this gem from Marcus.
Marcus: "Oh... dear... God. I have the sudden urge to throttle something... violently."
When Marcus thinks he is about to be ponified/captured, he tries to slit his throat only for the knife to be taken from him. In a desperate attempt he tries to faceplant on the knife only to knock himself out.
Japan's Prime Minister and Queen Elizabeth both took their own lives rather than be ponified.
Humanity's last plan if all else fails, which is a certainty if Canon!Equestria doesn't join in and stop the barrier, is to create a mass extinction event with the Yellowstone supervolcano.
Blessed with Suck: Marcus' runes. They are capable of extreme power, but they have to be embedded into the body of the user and even if the said user has had them for over two years, they can still be a bitch to control.
Break the Badass: Marcus breaks down to Manly Tears three times during the story. First is after he kills his ponifyed brother. Second when he meets Canon!Lyra for the first time, after confusing her with her TCB counterpart. Lastly is when he is explaining the state of his world to the Canon!Mane Six.
Bon-Bon, after being Forced to Watch Lyra be executed, goes utterly insane. Not helped by the chronological lobular desync disorder, a metal disorder she got from the emergency crossing of the time-dimensional barrier to be able to extract her and is something equal to a stroke.
"In simple words, she had suffered a temporal stroke, leaving the two halves of her brain in separate time zones. One was always in the present, while the other...wandered. Sometimes she babbled about events that had yet to happen, or screamingly re-experience past horrors, not just from her own life, but of Eldritch nightmares from eons before Equestria's founding. It was a painful, debilitating and humiliating fate. But at times, the ability to experience the future before it happened was extremely useful."
Princess Celestia briefly after seeing Marcus' memories of the atrocities Ponies were committing on his world.
Marcus: (Describing the barrier) "For a while, we simply thought that Celestia had panicked, that she was trying to protect her subjects from a potentially dangerous race..."
Twilight: "No... I don't want to hear this!"
Marcus: "But if that was the case, diplomacy would surely have made her see reason, that we wanted co-existence on mutually agreeable terms..."
Twilight: "Please, stop..."
Marcus: "But when Lyra showed us the truth, that Celestia was building an Equestrian Empire, we realized that she was just the latest in a long line of despots and dictators, a mad god trampling down on everyone and everpony."
Twilight: (completely in tears) "STOP!"
His explanation of his homeworld, however, has this effect on virtually everyone.
Kind of. In the Europe side story during the battle of Boston a teen soldier appears and "was not older as eighteen years" (the author's English isn't very good. Just roll with it.) but his exact age is not specified.
Chapter 10 reveals that Cheerilee and Doctor Whooves do not approve of child soldiers but see them as a necessary evil.
Doctor Whooves: "No child should ever become a soldier. But desperate times call for desperate measures."
Cluster F-Bomb: Marcus unleashes one of these on Twilight and the Mane 6 when he fights against them. He also lets slip some Country Matters towards Twilight in particular, who he only remembers as TCB-Celestia's Dragon.
Cold-Blooded Torture: What TCB!Spike is subjected to on Queen Celestia's orders. If it makes you feel better, he is full grown in the TCB Verse. So at least she's not torturing a child.
Yes sadly, despite what it is capable of, the Great Equestrian is described as one of the biggest skyliners ever built, being able to deploy chariots and spray potion clouds.
"The A.S. Great Equestrian, largest skyliner ever built, loomed over the skyline of Boston like an angel of death, disgorging chariots from which unicorn mages began to fire down bolts of lethal magic."
In the Europe side story we get to see what it is fully capable of.
"The Royal Guards had sent a giant airship to attack the rest of the human army and to crush the ponies who dare to help them in the Middle East. The city of Herat fell within the day, even with thousands of people fighting for it, it fell due to its new weapon. Potion Clouds. They threw everything they had, but nothing they had on hand could pierce the shield that was covering it, along with a few dozen Potioneer Ships, the entire city of was swarming with ponies."
There are also the less threatening Potioneer Ships.
Country Matters: Twice. During the first chapter, Marcus calls Canon!Twilight a "cunt lapping drone" before being tied up in a hospital room. Again in chapter two when Marcus notices Canon!Applejack and Rainbow Dash.
Crapsaccharine World: TCB!Equestria is a pretty good place to live... as long as you're loyal to the crown. If not, you get sent to a prison camp and slowly tortured, and Spike learned this the hard way.
According to TCB!Granny Smith, all of TCB!Equestria is "poisoned and dying".
Crapsack World: Earth has become one for the War Refugees. Rio de Janeiro especially has become a total hellhole according to the Starvation side story. It's best described by the main character himself:
Acevedo: "The city, Rio de Janeiro, is damn near a warzone. Food riots. Race riots. Dead ponies left and right, especially newfoals. You can't walk outside without protection."
Also according to the author of Starvation, You Do NOT Want to Know what is going on up in China. That isn't stopping Redskin and another writer from collaborating on a side story looking at the Asian front.
Crazy-Prepared: Subverted with the US Military. The US had been building up their military since 9/11 to partake in The War on Terror. However, they have been preparing for terrorists; now they are using their beefed up military to fight xenocidal aliens.
Human children transformed into Newfoals have the same empty Stepford Smile and general creepiness of any other newfoal. It's combined with Uncanny Valley, given that they're all blank flanks, something which isn't exactly unusual in Equestria. But to see them in such large numbers is a bit odd.
In the Starvation side story, it's mentioned that Button's momhates working with newfoal children. The narrator, Acevido, expresses disbelief that Button's mom, whose son is accident prone, spoiled, and obnoxious, has more patience for said son than the zombie-like shells of formerly human children. Even Button seems confused by it.
Creepy Souvenir: Unicorn horns and Pegasi wings appear to have become these for Human soldiers.
Marcus effortlessly beats the living daylights out of the Mane 6 because he mistook them for their TCB counterparts. The only reason they're still alive was because Marcus' magic wasn't at 100%.
"To watch the fight happen before their eyes, to now realize the scope of how lucky they truly were. Paste was an accurate description of what would have happen to them if Marcus came through ready for a fight, not the exhausted and weaken form in which he was in."
After Blueblood greatly insults Marcus, the only thing keeping him from killing Blueblood were the facts that the only remains of him would be a blood smear all over the wall and how it would be way too easy.
Dark Is Not Evil: TCB!Luna sided with the humans and attempted to fight her sister.
Deconstruction Fic: Bordering on Deconstructor Fleet - this fic shreds through why Equestria would engage in a typical Conversion Bureau plot, addresses the impracticality of transporting Equestria to Earth, the misanthropy of most ponies in Conversion Bureau fics, and it does not shy away from the horrors of war.
Deep Cover Agent: In chapter 11 it turns out that some of the royal guards were actually Changelings planted there since they were young.
Defeat Means Friendship: If the ponifying process is complete, the former human will praise their "savior" and the Queen.
Marcus intended to go down like this, mouthing off at Canon!Twilight due to thinking he was about to be ponified.
Demoted to Extra: The HLF, a rare (if not nonexistent) sight in the TCB genre, partly because the PHL has taken over much of their La Résistance role.
Despair Event Horizon: Discussed in chapter eleven - Marcus is a leading figure in the PHL and UN forces, and if he were killed or ponified, it could very well be what would send the surviving humans into full-out hopelessness.
Discord: "With the Commander at the helm of the new Equestrian forces, humanity would give up all hope."
During his fight with the Canon!Mane Six, Marcus keeps on fighting even after being blasted through a glass window (no Soft Glass here folks) courtesy of the party cannon and being thrown into a wall.
Princess Celestia in the mental sense. While obviously suffering from seeing the memories of her ponies commit such horrible actions, she keeps on witnessing only breaking when she sees the Mane 6 getting in on it.
Princess Celestia: (sobbing) "Show me more! All of it, I can take it!"
The war itself seems to be one traumatizing, psychotic episode for Marcus, given some of the shit he has seen.
Discussed. After Marcus and Celestia go into his mind, he is convinced he drove Celestia insane due to the atrocities he made her witness and her understandable freakout. Thankfully Shining Armour confirms that this is not the case.
Turns out he was wrong - human memories tend to be stronger than pony memories, and the weight of those memories- including the actions of Queen Celestia, all of Princess Celestia's ponies, and her own alternate student- were driving her crazy. Fortunately, Discord placed a spell on her that would help, similar to how Marcus now has a "Mini-Celestia," keeping him from going insane in his mind.
Crows - The Ponies fighting for Queen Celestia. However unlike most crows, the Queen has a plan to keep getting newfoals.
Lambs - Canon!Discord describes the Canon ponies as these.
Boars - Some of the resistance members fall into this category.
Snakes - The PER, fanatical terrorists who are too impatient to wait for the barrier to do its job.
Dying as Yourself: In the Europe Side Story, some German soldiers have told their comrades that in case they get potioned to shoot them before the transformation sets in.
Earth Is a Battlefield: North America (the Eastern US coast to be specific) has become the latest battlefield in the war against the ponies. Elsewhere, the barrier has stretched far enough that Nairobi, Kenya, New Dehli, India, and New Brunswick, Canada are on the frontlines as well.
Easily Thwarted Alien Invasion: Averted. The battle for humanity is a hard fought one that has been going on for three years, mostly thanks to the barrier.
Elaborate Underground Base: The PHL base is located deep underground and it links up to the tunnels and subway systems of New York.
Emergency Transformation: In the early days of TCB!Equestria's existence, the potion was given to cancer patients, amputees, the blind, the deaf, and so on. Needless to say, thecost outweighs the benefits.
at least two characters have referred to the death of old TCB!Equestria in the face of Queen Celestia's Solar Empire. Trixie has referred to Imperial Equestria as "Equestria no more". Granny Smith, however, summed it up in an outright Nightmare Fuel-inducing fashion:
Granny Smith: "No! Landsakes no Bloom! Get yerself away from this place as soon as you ken'. Get out of Ponyville, getch yerself outta Equestria! This [whole] place has been poisoned. It's dyin' Bloom, and what'll be left will soon be just a corpse, movin' and talkin' and playin' like it were alive, but dead through and through..."
In chapter 12, we learn that Tirek's curse reduced the formerly all-alicorn pony race to having only one of the three attributes, resulting in the modern pony race. Given that this was revealed in a decanonised dream, it may not be true.
Canon!Celestia, Luna, and Cadence team with Discord to end TCB!Celestia's xenocide campaign.
In the Europe side story, the entire Middle East puts aside their differences to fight the ponies. Hell, we even got the Taliban and the ANA teaming up.
Queen Chrysalis may despise Princess Celestia with a passion for casting the Changelings out of Equestria into the Badlands, but is more than willing to join forces with her to help stop Queen Celestia's conquest plans.
In Chapter 13, it's shown that New York's gangs and The Mafia threw their lot in with the resistance.
In the Asia Side Story, in the beginning days of the war, North and South Korea put their differences aside for the battle against Equestria.
Enemy Within: Twilight fears that deep down, Princess Celestia maybe a heartless, murdering, xenophobic, dictator after hearing about Queen Celestia from Marcus. Thankfully that's not the case.
Discord is disgusted by what Queen Celestia is doing to the humans and what she did to his counterpart. Not only that, but even he's scared of the Bag of Tirek.
In addition to having the same feelings as his canon counterpart, TCB!Discord protected several ponies who would otherwise have been killed by collateral damage when Queen Celestia attacked him.
Queen Celestia briefly had some doubts when she forcibly ponifies some reporters at a press conference and when she turns Luna into stone.
Played for laughs, in chapter eleven, Discord reveals that even Queen Celestia couldn't stand Prince Blueblood and turned him to stone and crushed him.
Queen Chrysalis balks at Shining Armor's accusation that she raped him while disguised as Cadance, and even seems insulted by the idea. She still used her Mind Control to her advantage, but not for that specifically. May also be a Take That to stories which actually have that happen.
Evil Counterpart: Princess Celestia and the Mane Six have theirs in the TCB verse though the Mane Six haven't encountered theirs yet. However TCB!Rarity wasn't always evil, as it is said she attempted to flee Equestria with Spike but was captured and brainwashed.
The ponies loyal to the Queen against the humans. The reverse is true for obvious reasons.
It's implied that there are many ponies in TCB!Equestria that outright despise the newfoals, but thanks to government spies, most of this attitude is hidden (unless they wish to visit the "Re-education Centers".)
Plus it's implied in the Starvation story that pro-human ponies are not even safe from this, with race riots and dead ponies being quite common in Rio.
Fan Verse: The author is currently setting up a universe for alternate timelines in the Spectrum verse.
Eagles: TCB!Vinyl Scratch acts as one for the PHL.
Lions: Princess Celestia and later all of Equis.
Hornets: The Newfoals.
Soldier Ants: The resistance fighters.
First Contact: TCB!Equestria came about because of an accident at CERN HQ in Geneva, Switzerland involving an attempt to track and identify tachyon particles and ended up breaching the fabric of reality which created a portal.
First-Person Perspective: In chapter eight, Princess Celestia experiences human warfare from Marcus' POV. Thanks again to the mind sharing spell.
TCB!Bon-Bon was forced to watch Lyra get turned into stone and crushed by an angry mob. Broke the poor girl's mind in two.
Marcus thinks he made Princess Celestia watch the ponies in his world commit atrocities against the humans. note In reality, Celestia wanted to see what the ponies were doing to see if he was telling the truth.
The biggest point of divergence between Normal Equestria and TCB Equestria is Cadence not becoming an alicorn and therefore didn't take the throne of the Crystal Empire, allowing King Sombra to reestablish his power and fight a conventional war with Equestria, hardening them. However, that only came about because of a heavily corrupted Celestia's influence. Which in turn only happened because of a certain ill-fated scuba diving trip...
It's implied that in his last moments, TCB!Discord placed a hypnotic suggestion in TCB!Twilight's mind to compel her to use the Elements of Harmony on Marcus rather than just ponify him, sending him to Canon Equestria where he could get help. His death was not in vain.
For Your Own Good: How the PER and the ponies loyal to Queen Celestia see the ponification of the humans. The war is even referred to as "Ponydom's noble battle to save Earth from itself".
Fridge Horror: In-Universe. Marcus realizes that if he did kill the Canon!Mane 6, he would have moved on to other Canon Ponies that he would mistake for the TCB counterparts and eventually to Princess Celestia. All the while, accidentally dooming humanity in the process.
"It struck Applejack that he was now just realizing that he could've killed a bunch of innocent ponies simply because they looked alike as the ones that hunt him down, basically twins actually. Not that any of her friends would blame him. If she was in the same situation, she would be sure she would have a similar reaction, not on the level he showed that's for sure, but was understandable in some form."
TCB!Cheerilee: “When a parent leaves their future in our hooves, we not only shape them, but protect them from harm. Not just from themselves, but to anypony wishing to hurt them. They are my children, every single one of them. And it is my duty to protect them. Even from monsters.”
From Bad to Worse: In Chapter 10, it comes to light that the Gryphons are sending over Tsumerai to aid the battle for North America. Just one of them is supposed to be incredibly badass, and they're sending all one hundred of them. It sounds like good news, doesn't it? Except their main duty is to protect the ruling monarch, and the only way all of them are able to come over is because their King just died, leaving Gilda as the last member of the Royal Family over a country that was already dying after being cut off from trade by Queen Celestia.
Future Me Scares Me: Sort of. TCB!Equestria is about four years ahead of Canon!Equestria and the Canon!Mane 6 and Princess Celestia are truly horrified at their counterpart's actions. EspeciallyCanon!Celestia, who experienced firsthand through Marcus' shared memories what she was like. She... didn'ttake itwell. (See the entry for Angst Nuke)
Ghost Memory: Thanks to Canon!Twilight's mind sharing spell, Princess Celestia now knows most of Marcus' life such as his Marine training, his pre-war life, among others. The same is true for Marcus but a mental "guardian" who calls itself "Tia" keeps most of them away from him due to the fact that over a thousand years worth of memories would make him a vegetable.
A Goddess Am I: TCB!Celestia. Normal!Celestia's refusal to do so is one of the reasons for the other's... disapproval.
Princess Celestia: "When she spoke to me, she called me a shade, an incomplete ruler, an alicorn who refuses to raise her status to a Goddess."
Normal Celestia decides to consult Discord about The Bag of Tirek. The talk ends with Discord himself deciding to join the fight.
In TCB-Earth we have the entire Middle East allying with each other. Something only heard of when the world is damn near screwed.
The nukes set near the Yellowstone mega volcano.
Gorn: The author dosen't shy away from what the weapons of both sides do to each other.
Go Mad from the Revelation: After seeing the atrocities her little ponies were committing against the humans, Celestia wakes up, screams bloody murder, and teleports the hell outta there. Thankfully Luna and Cadence track her down and help her regain her bearings.
Princess Celestia: "You told the truth! My little ponies, they did that!?"
Goshdang It To Heck: Along with many other things, Newfoals lose their ability to swear. Trixie thinks it sounds stupid.
Great Offscreen War: The war between Coversion-Equestria and the Sombra controlled Crystal Empire.
Grew Beyond Their Programming: If Discord is to be believed, Celestia and Luna were only meant to move the sun and moon, not to actually rule over the ponies.
The Gulf War: Chapter eleven briefly reveals that Marcus' father died from defending his comrades from Iraqi Republican Guards.
Gun Porn: Acevedo in the Starvation side story tries to go in depth about his Taurus revolver before Button cuts him off.
Guns Are Worthless: Only against alicorns. They work just fine on everypony else. However, there are ways of getting around the threat of guns. Magical shields (if strong enough), can No Sell most forms of weapons, and there is the old trick of simply taking the guns away using unicorn magic as turning them against their owner.
Both versions of Dinky and Sparkler for that matter. Derpy raised Dinky as a single mom before she married Doctor Whooves and the latter two found and adopted an orphaned Sparkler on one of their time traveling adventures.
Hate Fic: According to Redskin, the entire fic came about as this to the original TCB story and particularly the stories of the divisive author Chatoyance, who has come to personify much of what authors hate about TCB stories.
Heel-Face Turn: TCB!Bon-Bon was all for complete ponification until she is forced to kill a newfoal trying to beat Lyra to death.
He Who Fights Monsters: Discussed at least twice. Trixie is concerned about this happening to her and the other PHL soldiers after the war, and King William (in a completely different chapter) is truly saddened by what they've been driven to:
Trixie: "Cadence... what has this war done to us? What are we going to be when it's done? Heroes, criminals, monsters worse those than those we've fought... or, something else altogether... it scares me Cadence. It scares me..."
King William: "Damn them... Damn us... So much loss, so much death and pain and suffering and rape of innocence... We'll all go to the Devil for this."
Trixie gets a powerful but brief one after finding a tortured Spike in a prison cell.
Celestia has one when she sees her counterpart's actions in Marcus' memories. Her reaction is... destructive.
Hidden Depths: After hearing from Marcus about how the Equestria and the Celestia he knows came to Earth, Twilight fears that deep down Celestia is capable of being a murdering monster. Don't worry Twi, Princess Celestia is more horrified than you could ever be by her counterpart's actions.
Heroic Sacrifice: Queen Elizabeth II blows herself up to kill a squad of Royal Guards and PER agents sent after her.
Hit So Hard The Calendar Felt It: Canon Equestria is in the "Second Year Anno Harmonia," aka two years after the events of Nightmare Moon's defeat. TCB Equestria is in its sixth year AH, however.
Our YMMV page: "Millions of people were made refugees in that time, this is because of the The Barrier, which annihilates any human or human-made object in its way (not even leaving dust behind). Even if you haven't lost your home yet, that's billions more counting down until the barrier is on their front lawn. Try living three years, attempting to go about your daily routines, knowing that is your world's fate, dying by inches."
Not only that, but the barrier is nigh-unstoppable, and every human knows it. It took a minor miracle for the PHL and the Americans to even delay the barrier, and the world knows it, to the point that the U.S President resigned himself to a plan that would destroy all life on Earth, with the small hope it will at least do something to the Barrier, even as it kills them all.
Twilight: "The humans are a disorganized mess, they've damaged their planet with how reckless they've been with their industrialization and technology."
Humans Are Warriors: From official soldiers to civilian resistance, every able bodied human is in the fight. Even before Queen Celestia invaded, TCB!Discord even warned her that humanity would not go down without a fight.
Discord: "You, bring order to a group of beings that thrive on chaos and order with a mixed bag of general insanity? I have seen them, long ago before you were even a speck in Mother's mind. They are powerful and will destroy you and all your ponies the moment they feel threatened."
Humanity Is Advanced: Some of the TCB Ponies such as TCB!Cloudchaser are amazed by human technology... and find it disturbing that Twilight is not going gaga over humanity's science and art.
Humanity Is Superior: TCB!Discord's opinion (at least militarily). The only thing keeping humanity from marching into Equestria and blowing them to bits is the barrier and the lie about humans not being able to survive on the other side.
Hypocrite: The TCB Equestrians can go on and on about the evils of the human race, never mind that they're doing far worse. They also consider technology and human works to be evil, yet they have used Zeppelins and concrete for their own purposes. That, and as Marcus points out, the talk about love, friendship, and harmony is at complete odds with the Mind Rape and forcible transformation of an entire species into zombie-like newfoals.
Marcus' reasons for wanting to kill the TCB Universe Mane Six, ranging from Rainbow Dash ponifying his soldiers and civilians right in front of him to Twilight ponifying, seducing, and marrying his own brother. Which led to Marcus having to kill said brother.
Quite frankly, every surviving human now has this, as so many have been lost, so many homelands have been destroyed...
From the Asia Side Story: Porter wants to make the Queen pay for ponifying his girlfriend (who was one of the reporters that got forcibly converted at the press conference), while Hyong-Jin vows to avenge his family and friends that were likely killed or ponified by the PER.
Incongruously Dressed Newfoal: Fresh newfoals usually keep a piece of clothing that they were wearing when they were turned, such as a flannel shirt or a military uniform.
Averted hard. The TCB Ponies have zero qualms about potioning small children, even shoving it down their throats if needed.
And on the other side, it's perfectly acceptable to shoot said newfoal children, especially since they're now the enemy and would happily force potion down people's throats, all in the name of spreadingharmony. It's even seen as a Mercy Kill of sorts.
Queen Celestia killed all the dragons with the exception of Spike, who she kept locked up and viciously tortured.
Iron Will is the only Minotaur confirmed alive in the TCB verse.
Also in the Europe side story, Chrysalis and her Changeling hive were killed by the tainted love of the newfoals, with Chrysalis hanging onto life for a good few years before finally succumbing to the poisoned love destroying her body.
Though not the last of her species, Gilda is the last living member of the Gryphon Royal Family.
Marcus is currently the last surviving member of his family.
What the remains of the Changeling hive did to protect Chrysalis so she could hide away and repopulate their species. Sadly, it was all in vain.
This was suggested to an alternate plan of action as opposed to using the Yellowstone mega volcano to create a Class X Apocalypse How scenario. Naturally, it doesn't take, for the simple reason that it would be a Senseless Sacrifice.
Magic Antidote: The potion was seen as this in the very early days of Equestria's existence until the mental changes of the Newfoals became more and more apparent.
"[Cadence] still shivered at her aunt's explanation about everything involved with the Sun Tyrant, that lingered in her mind, how she came to the world of Humanity, bearing gifts and good tidings, all the while planning to subjugate them and erase their very existence from their world. How she offered a ‘would be miracle cure; it cured diseases, cancers, gave sight to the blinded, hearing to the deaf, grew legs that allowed those without limbs to walk once more, and so much more. But those that took it... lost everything in return, and when the time was right, when Humanity began to learn of the side effects of the Potion, she struck."
Manly Tears: When Canon!Lyra meets with Marcus in the room he is being held in, Marcus is overwhelmed with emotion to the point of tears since the Lyra in his universe became a martyr for opposing Queen Celestia, saving many human lives, and was apparently a good friend of his, and again when Marcus is talking to the Canon Mane Six about the state of his world.
Mary Sue: In-Universe - the concept is Discussed, and Deconstructed at the same time. According to Marcus the ponification potion turns people into "perfect ponies". Applejack quickly dismisses the concept of perfect ponies as complete crap.
Marcus: "The last time we all met, we were at war. Applejack pinned me down so that Twilight could administer the potion, promising to make me 'perfect'... a perfect pony..."
Applejack: "Ponies ain't perfect, bub! Anyone tells you otherwise don't know their flank from their face."
Fluttershy: "A-hum... Ponies can be mean, and cruel... but also kind..."
Rainbow Dash: "Yeah! Look at me. I mean, I am kinda awesome but well, I can be a jerk some of the time... a lot of the time..."
Marcus: "I never thought I'd see the day... ponies used to seem like the biggest hypocrites to have ever lived, going on about harmony, friendship, love and tolerance while they did... all that..."
A father during Marcus' deployment in Mexico City kills his ponified son before taking his own life.
Marcus killed his own little brother Jacob, who was also ponified.
Middle Eastern Coalition: In the Europe side story, all of the countries within the the Middle East put their collective differences aside and ally with each other to fight the ponies. Guess that's when you know shit is getting very serious.
Plus there's the Geis that Celestia put on her troops to make them serve her.
And the corruption of the TCB!Mane Six, turning them into xenocidal monsters who ponify anyone they see... and now most of Equestria, given how few ponies seem to find a problem with this.
And even TCB!Celestia herself given what the Bag of Tirek did to her.
Mirror Universe: As Redskin has said, the story is supposed to be a different take against other authors' stories in the TCB genre, especially Chatoyance, as he has viewed the original TCB premise as Canon Defilement.
The barrier destroys many well known human landmarks such as the Westminster Clock Tower (aka Big Ben) and The Pyramid of Giza. Doctor Whooves would very much like to know where they went.
Balmoral Castle is destroyed by Queen Elizabeth taking the Royal Guard and PER agents down with her.
Hancock Tower was destroyed when the Great Equestrian crashed into it. Heroic Sacrifice indeed.
Windsor Castle is mentioned as being destroyed when a plane crashed into it just as the UK was overrun. And even if parts of it survived, since the British Islands were all consumed by the barrier, those are gone too.
"Trixie's legs suddenly felt as soft as rubber, and she sat with a horrified gasp. Wet tears of her own ran down her face. This was worse than the newfoals, worse than the war. This was a life brutalized and tortured, by Equestria... Equestria. Loving and tolerant... Equestria. Peaceful and forgiving... Equestria no more..."
Multinational Team: The remainders of Europe's armed forces have now joined together as one to keep fighting the ponies.
Multiversal Conqueror: It's very clear that once Queen Celestia is done with Earth, the regular Equestria is next. And according to Discord, she will likely only continue on after that.
Discord: "The multiverse is vast, each world having vastly varied ways of existing, all with different ideals. Something the corrupt queen wouldn't be able to stand. Oh, there are powers out there that can rival, yes, or even beat her. But she will play it smart; she will gather power from other worlds before finally striking, with a limitless army at her beck and call from dozens, if not hundreds, of worlds."
Mutagenic Goo: The potion. Unlike many examples, this one can actually be turned into clouds.
Murder Suicide: A man kills his recently ponified son and then himself after reciting The Lord's Prayer, to TCB!Applejack's disgust and Marcus' horror.
Next Sunday A.D.: Even before TCB!Equestria arrived, the Earth they arrived in didn't seem to be any different from ours despite being in the year 2020 at the time.
Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Discord attributes Equestria's Medieval Stasis to Princess Celestia's desire to let the ponies live in Harmony, which he claims has only made them complacent and overly dependent on her and presumably, ill-prepared for their war with TCB!Equestria.
Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: It's clear that TCB!Twilight has helped open the portal that got Marcus into Canon!Equestria, bringing them into the war to aid Earth.
See Twilight's long Reality Ensues rant on the problems of Equestria appearing in the sea.
It's implied by Doctor Whooves in chapter 10 that something much more sinister may be at work with the Barrier. He is completely right.
No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Upon first arriving in Canon!Equestria, Marcus beats the ever loving shit outta the Mane 6 (well four out of six due to Rarity and Twilight being late to the party) due to mistaking them for their TCB counterparts. The after action report:
Rainbow Dash: Wings popped out of sockets, thrown into carrot stall.
Applejack: Used as meat shield, receives kick from Rainbow Dash strong enough to send her breakfast back up, kick to the ribs, broken leg.
Fluttershy: Life nearly choked out of her.
Pinkie Pie: Headbutt between the eyes, scratched out cutie mark, and a "haymaker" powerful enough to knock her out.
Later he even manages to give the princesses a run for their money. They were armored too.
Princess Celestia shows her evil counterpart how Ponies and Humans are similar and capable of living in true harmony with each other. Naturally this doesn't change the Queen's mind.
Focus Ray tries to invoke this on Trixie. It doesn't work.
A conversation between Celestia and Discord in Chapter 11 has Discord implicitly say this (without referencing Queen Celestia) about Princess Celestia. He points out that her "Harmony" has caused ponykind to stagnate, and implies that his normal brand of "chaos" was actually similar to how humanity and Earth function, and claims it would have been a much better way to encourage the growth of pony civilization in the long run.
Stalwart Heart tries this on Cheerilee in chapter eleven.
Twice during the Canon!Mane Six's fight with Marcus. First is when Twilight sees that Marcus is impervious to magic. The second is when Fluttershy's stare fails to subdue him.
In chapter 6, Trixie gets a massive one when she realizes that Queen Celestia is modifying the potion to turn the Newfoals from a bunch of Stepford Smiler zombies into an army of soldiers, willing to kill... meaning that she has upward of over a billion potential new soldiers.
Celestia when she realizes that Queen Celestia is far more powerful than her.
Marcus gets one when Princess Celestia reveals that the Queen contacted her.
Old Shame: Celestia's opinion of her banishing the changelings all those centuries ago.
Well aside from the obvious, TCB!Cloudchaser notes how Twilight isn't obsessing with human technology.
Cloudchaser: "What really got me wondering though, is why you aren't going gaga over [human technology]? You love this kind of stuff, Twilight!"
Discord refers to Celestia chewing out Prince Blueblood as one of these. Justified however, as she had been under a lot of stress recently.
And it's implied Lightning Dust is sleeping with Rainbow Dash. Something rather unlikely given Lightning Dust's cavalier attitude to nearly killing off Dash's friends. Which leads to another Out-of-Character Moment, raising the question of just how the other Elements deal with Lightning Dust.
People's Republic of Tyranny: The TCB Equestrian army is called the "Salvation Army," while their airfleet is called the "Rescue Fleet." Averted with the official name of Equestria itself, however, which is now called The Solar Empire.
Pitying Perversion: Berry Punch, and presumably all other members of the PETN (Ponies for the Ethical Treatment of Newfoals), assume that the newfoals' Uncanny Valley behavior is simply comparable to just coming out of a drug addiction, and that they should be treated with respect. Of course, it never occurs to them that maybe turning them into ponies in the first place is unconscionable in itself.
Police Brutality: Trixie is subjected to this after being taken into military custody in the Europe side story.
Pyrrhic Villainy: The Americans intend to invoke this if the barrier makes it too far by wiring the Yellowstone volcano to nukes. Even if the barrier can keep the ash and radiation out, part of the volcano will be inside the barrier when it blows, causing a chain reaction that will turn Earth into a Death World and making sure that humanity's enemy will have fought and died for nothing.
Marcus has seen a lot of shit during the war but always kept (for lack of a better word) relatively calm. When he ended up in Canon!Equestria and encounters the Mane 6, he finally loseshisshit.
Twilight decided there and then that, to the end of her days, she would never forget the look of shock, followed by inexpressible rage that plastered itself over his features.
Discord is visibly angry when he finishes chewing out Princess Celestia over Equestria's Medieval Stasis.
In chapter eleven, Princess Celestia finally lets loose all her stress and built up rage on Blueblood when he pushes his attitude too far.
Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Canon!Chrysalis may have had no problem with leeching off his love for Cadence while impersonating her, but she never once considered "sharing herself" with Shining Armor during her attempted takeover.
Reality Ensues: Twilight explains the scientific reasons that the usual The Conversion Bureau plot (as in Equestria popping up in the middle of the ocean) is impossible. Besides the massive amounts of magical energy it would take to transport an entire continent to another dimension, that is:
"The Reason You Suck" Speech: There are plenty of these to go around. Marcus gives a few to the Canon!Mane Six (though he thinks they're the TCB counterparts), Trixie gives one to a guard near Spike, Queen Celestia gives one to Princess Celestia, Discord gives one to Princess Celestia... Though, to be fair, it's a Conversion Bureau fanfic, and a deconstructiveHate Fic, against Chatoyance, who has given plenty of material. "The Reason You Suck" speeches are not just expected, but a certainty. Case in point:
Princess Celestia gives a huge one to a vision of Queen Celestia in chapter four.
Trixie (in her Lyra persona) gives on to Focus Ray.
Trixie: "WE ARE NOTHING ALIKE! YOU SPEAK AS IF YOU'VE BEEN A PONY ALL YOUR LIFE! YOU ARE JUST ONE BROKEN SOUL AMONG THE MILLIONS THAT WERE CONVERTED! THE GRYPHONS ARE MORE KIN TO ME THAN YOU ARE!"
There's also a few given to Princess Celestia, in grand TCB tradition. Though compared to her xenocidalEvil Counterpart, she comes off looking quite mild in comparison.
After he pushes her already strained psyche too far, Princess Celestia gives Prince Blueblood a long overdue one for being such an entitled, freeloading, and inconsiderate embarrassment to the royal family, as well as a posthumous one to his ancestors, before declaring he's cut off from his inheritance.
Marcus' beatdown on the Mane Six (albeit misaimed). However, Marcus seems to be after Fluttershy and Twilight more than anypony else.
Marcus: "It's you, or me, Flutterbitch. I've dreamed of this moment, for years. How does it feel, to be trapped, like the rest of us, in a vice with no escape? Tables finally turned, bitch. Now, you, are, going, to, DIE!"
Discussed in chapter ten. TCB!Snowflake's anger problems are well known throughout the PHL though Cloudchaser has been helping him with them. If Cloudchaser were to die from the injuries she sustained in battle, it could very well send Snowflake into one of these.
Rouge Angles of Satin: The Europe Side Story. Justified in that English isn't the author's first language.
Marcus, although it's rather subtle at times. He displays a lot of the classic symptoms of PTSD, such as having frequent flashbacks to previous events in the war, and the sheer amount of hatred he harbors toward the TCB!Mane Six borders on psychotic.
Princess Celestia is actually becoming one due to her having absorbed Marcus' memories. While Marcus had a) the experience to deal with them, b) has had time to process what he's seen, and c) comes from a world where even before the war, murder and death were (while not common) not unheard of, Celestia comes from a peaceful world where very little chaos or evil exists. Coupled with having had no time to cope with the memories, the shock and horror of what her "Precious Little Ponies," are capable of, and the depths of evil to which her counterpart has sunk, it's of little wonder that she finally snaps in chapter 11. Discord casts a spell on her that should help gather these memories and help her deal with it, but time will tell if it was successful.
TCB!Spike and Rarity were implied to have had something before Rarity's brainwashing.
Between TCB!Rainbow Dash and TCB!Lighting Dust. Yeah, it's okay, take a minute to let that sink in. Blame the Mind Rape.
One was the rainbow-maned Captain of the Wonderbolts, while the other was her loyal (and some said, loving) lightning-fast second-in-command. Within seconds, both had disappeared within the gleaming spires of the citadel, and from the fact that they had been flying supersonic over the capital, the implication was that they bore urgent news.
According to Acevedo in the Starvation side story, Button Mash intends on seeing Sweetie Belle again when the war is over.
Shooting Superman: Before her fight with Queen Celestia, TCB!Luna shoots herself in the head at point-blank range to prove that Alicorns can't be taken out by conventional means. This is after Luna is Brought Down to Normal from being less powerful than her sister to begin with.
It's also nicknamed a "rental riot suit," a reference to the Biting Elbows song Rabid Red.
Acevedo: " You don’t force people who hate you to work for you as slave labor! Especially not people who think your very existence is an affront to existence of their 'Goddess'! Whose idea was this?! Armacham?!Weyland-Yutani?!Umbrella Corporation?!"
When the Solar Tyrant launched a decapitation attack against the resisting nations (the one that claimed Marcus's brother's humanity), the Prime Minister of Japan was named Rokubungi.
Shut Up, Hannibal!: Upon being called an "incomplete shadow" and a lesser ruler, Princess Celestia gives one to a vision of her evil counterpart in chapter four.
Shut Up, Kirk!: When Celestia angrily calls Discord out on how his vision of chaos caused untold amounts of pain and damage to the ponies and Equestria, Discord retorts that her "harmony" has caused its own damage by causing pony civilization to become stagnant and the ponies themselves complacent.
Single Tear: Marcus sheds one before he kills the newfoal that used to be his brother.
Discord: "Do they really? Oh, woe is me, to try and understand your flawless judgment. I mean, just look at your standing army! You have them equipped with... spears! They question nothing! Trouble? You resolve without an effort. Risks? Why worry, the princess knows. Secrets of the past? What secrets of the past? The princess would never lie, so why think further? Why try anything new, when the one proven to know better is in charge? The ponies are going to be stagnant once you reach your limit, which is nearing, and you know it!"
Super Strength: When his runes are fully charged, Marcus is strong enough to break Celestia's front ankles in a direct contest of strength.
Take Over the World: Queen Celestia's plan for Earth, Canon!Equestria and any other universe she comes across when she's done with them both.
Taking The Spear: TCB!Cloudchaser took a few spears that were meant for Snowflake.
Taken for Granite: TCB!Lyra, Luna, and Blueblood were all turned into stone. Lyra was crushed by an angry mob and the sight breaks her girlfriend's mind in two, Luna is kept as a trophy, and Blueblood is crushed as well and it's implied it was because even Queen Celestia couldn't stand him.
Take That: Discord had... unfavorable things to say about Chatoyance in chapter 12.
Discord: "If you want characters to suddenly start acting out of character like this, go read a Chatoyance fic!"
Queen Elizabeth II takes the Royal Guard and PER agents sent after her straight to hell thanks to a rigged Balmoral Castle.
The American military has jury-rigged multiple nukes to set off the Yellowstone Supervolcano in case the barrier consumes too much of the planet, as a last 'fuck you' to Queen Celestia. For reference, the other suggested alternatives included surrender to the Tyrant, a Senseless SacrificeLast Stand against the Newfoal hordes, all-out nuclear bombardment of the barrier or attempting to build a spaceship to escape.
When the magical portal that transports Marcus into Canon!Equestria opens up over Ponyville, Twilight Sparkle remarks that everything tastes purple for a moment when she senses massive amounts of magical energy radiating from it.
The void between universes tastes like orange to Discord.
Tank Goodness: Tanks such as the M1A3 Abrams, the Leopard 2, and the T-90 make appearances.
Trixie, who went from being a Small Name, Big Ego illusionist to a clever, shapeshifting assassin and spy with an array of bombs and considerable skill with a blade. A Badassmakeover◊ also helped with that.
Pretty much all of humanity, given the shit they have been through so far.
The Troubles: While he was a human, Focus Ray was a member of the Irish Republican Army.
Twenty Minutes into the Future: TCB-Earth is currently in the year 2023, but appeared to be no different from today... well you know, without the xenocide. Justified, considering that TCB!Equestria's invasion would have greatly impeded all non-military scientific progress.
Uncanny Valley: In-Universe - in addition to the standard characterization of theNewfoals, Blue Spy also handily points out that every Newfoal ever produced is a Blank Flank, and treats it as the unsettling icing on the creepiness cake. Even worse, the blank flank syndrome is spreading to natural-born ponies as well. In fact virtually everything about TCB!Equestria conveys this image, too. The authors go to great lengths to describe Equestria as looking happy, but there is something very seriously off.
Uncanny Village: TCB!Ponyville. Actually, most of TCB!Equestria is like this now, if the opening description in Chapter 12 and 13 is anything to judge by. There's smiling, almost zombified newfoals everywhere, and there's something wrong with the sunlight. According to said opening description:
"... the sun, although bright and radiant, seemed to cast a colder, more pallid light, or how everything on which it cast its’ gaze seemed...lesser. Not washed out, or colourless, or even decayed. Just lesser, diminished, reduced."
Unskilled, but Strong: Marcus, despite his runes giving him magical abilities, has a lot of trouble using it for more than enhancing his body, releasing a Battle Aura and basic telekinesis like lifting and pushing, due to not having a horn to focus it through. However, the things he can do, he does with an incredible amount of force.
Unstoppable Rage: Marcus' runes seem to give him a HUGE boost of aggression when active. Possibly justified, as when he does get the chance to use them, he's usually hip-deep in ponies trying to get him to "Join the Herd," and he has... extremely personal reasons for not liking them.
Averted. The resistance groups and the military don't seem to have any problems with cooperating with each other.
Also averted in the case of New York's mafia and gangbangers, who now hand out weapons free of charge to civilians. Plus continuing to fight each other in a city with high military presence is just stupid in every sense of the damn word.
We Can Rule Together: How Stalwart Heart (formerly Marcus' little brother Jacob) tries to convince Marcus to be ponified and join him in "spreading harmony".
We Have Reserves: Queen Celestia's plan for using her vast reserves of newfoals to conquer other universes.
Discord thinks he's one too, as he only caused chaos in Equestria the first time so ponies could overcome the challenges necessary to make themselves self-reliant. He's not thrilled with what Princess Celestia's well-meaning efforts to stop him have lead to.
Wham Line: Chapter 8 ends with Discord telling Celestia he could get free "because [her] ever loving twin killed him."
Chapter 14 ends with Canon!Luna announcing that they have Marcus, meaning that Canon!Equestria will finally join the war.
What the Hell, Hero?: Most of Ponyville gave one to Twilight and company when news of the barrier's expansion began to spread across Equestria.
