Fanfic / G-Man Meets the Mystery Man

Go To

Half-Life meets David Lynch. You read that right.

This... strange short story was the product of tropers John Alexander Hitchcock and PeabodySam noticing a slight resemblance in two really strange creepy characters with an otherworldly vibe, and deciding to work out what would happen if they actually met.

The premise is simple enough. G-Man is at a party, when he is approached by a certain other creepy mysterious character with an otherworldly vibe and unknown intentions, morals, or motives who may or may not be human. A bit of shenanigans involving Fringe and The Adjustment Bureau and Hilarity Ensues.

Can be read here.

This story provides examples of:

  • Affectionate Parody: PeabodySam is a big fan of Half-Life while John Alexander Hitchcock admires the works of David Lynch.
  • The Cameo: By characters from Fringe and The Adjustment Bureau of all things.
  • The End... Or Is It?: "Prepare for unforseen consequences."
  • Evil Laugh: The Mystery Man, at the end.
  • Genre Shift: Normally both these characters are extremely unsettling and not exactly people you want to have anything to do with as long as you can help it. Put them both together and suddenly they become hilarious.
    • In Lost Highway, the scene where the Mystery Man claims to have met someone before and then answers the phone at his house while still standing right in front of him is a very creepy scene. Here, it's Played for Laughs, largely because the guy making the call is just as creepy.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Two of them.
  • Mood Whiplash: When the G-Man calls his house after the Mystery Man tells him he is there, anyone who has seen Lost Highway knows what's going to happen next... except September accidentally picks up the phone instead, and then the Adjustment Bureau has to fix it so that the Mystery Man picks up as was originally supposed to happen.
  • Noodle Implements: We never find out just what was in that package the Mystery Man planned to give G-Man, just that the latter already knew.
  • Noodle Incident: The Mystery Man is very sure he's met the G-Man before, at his house. When this happened, if at all, is anyone's guess.
  • Surreal Humour: True to the original film, the Mystery Man is somehow able to answer the phone in G-Man's house while still standing right in front of him, though in this case it's partially Played for Laughs despite being a very creepy moment in the original movie.
