Fanfic / Frozen: A Dark Retelling

Go To

This page contains unmarked spoilers for the Disney movie Frozen.

Frozen: A Dark Retelling is a Frozen fanfic that literally retells the story Darker and Edgier and from a more realistic point of view. Psychological damage from years of isolation is more explicitly shown, many of the comedic elements are removed, and dangerous situations like Anna falling into a creek in freezing weather are dealt with the seriousness you'd expect. It will eventually lead to an original trilogy set in this universe, as opposed to Frozen's.

The fanfic can be found here.

This fanfic contains examples of:

  • Accidental Public Confession: Elsa at the coronation ball, when she accidentally reveals her powers to the whole kingdom.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Other than the obvious expansion that comes with a literary interpretation of a movie, the Time Skip in "Do You Wanna Build A Snowman?" became four full chapters, with many stories about how Anna and Elsa dealt with the sudden separation. Kristoff also gets some more fully fleshed out backstory, explaining his isolation and his cynicism. Other scenes explain what Hans is doing while Anna is off looking for Elsa.
  • Adapted Out: Olaf does not exist in this version.
  • All Trolls Are Different: The film version has cute, harmless-seeming rock trolls. Here, they are twisted and grotesque humanoids with a wide variety of Body Horror.
  • Altar the Speed: Still present, but played differently. Hans and Anna need to marry before the gates close and Elsa can keep them apart, and while they only got engaged in the movie, here they actually do it, albeit without witnesses.
  • The Cameo: Rapunzel is given a brief mention on coronation day.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Kristoff had a sister named Aina who died when she was 5, paving the way for his moodiness and isolation later in life. Hearing Anna mention her name causes him to do a double take.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Anna rushes after Elsa without proper gear or preparation, and she almost pays the price for it when she falls into the creek. In the film, her skirt froze stiff and she simply staggered the rest of the way to Wandering Oaken's Trading Post and Sauna. Here, she is badly injured when she falls into the creek. Kristoff finds her, "argues" with Sven, then hauls her to Oaken's place to get her treated.
