Hinata Hyuuga was always a shy and quiet ninja. Sure, her crush on Naruto went unrequited, but she at least got to admire him from afar. That is, until she happened to overhear part of a conversation Naruto is having where he is seemingly mocking her. As she has a tendency to do in times of stress, Hinata becomes suddenly aggressive, confronting Naruto and berating him for abusing her feelings for a cruel story. He explains the misunderstanding, and the two resolve to get to know one another better.

That is the start of their story.

The story is now complete with 170 chapters and over 700,000 words in length. It can be found [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3916565/1/A_Growing_Affection here]].

!!Provides examples of:

* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: The only thing keeping Madara's allies from attacking and killing him is the fact that he is necessary to their plans. Otherwise, he'd be running from the ENTIRE NINJA WORLD and possibly [[MugglePower the civilians too.]] That's how much he's hated. Even ''Orochimaru'' has genuinely loyal followers.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * TheAce: Minato and Yukihana, also a BattleCouple.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * ActionDad: Putting aside the canon ninja fathers, there's Yasuo Mizuno, the Mizukage[[spoiler:, Itachi and Kakashi]].
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * ActionGirl: Many. Lots of whom are also {{Action Girlfriend}}s.
* ActionMom: Yukihana saves five people despite only giving birth two days previous.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample ** [[spoiler:Yugao, Shizune and Hana.]]
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * ActionPet: Akamaru, Iruka's hawk, Harrier and Anko's cobras.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample ** Ni-ne [[spoiler:aka the sealed Two Tails]].
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: After [[spoiler: Sakura's angry [[WhatDoesHeSeeInHer rant]] towards Hinata saying one of the reasons Naruto likes her might be her boobs]], Hinata has this to say to Ino:
--> (chuckles) "You know, I've never really heard someone make fun of my breasts before."
* ACupAngst: Sakura has it every now and then in the story. But by the time of [[spoiler:Naruto and Hinata's wedding]], where even other kunoichi several years her junior are better endowed than her, she gets over it.[[spoiler:..mostly because her boyfriend Rock Lee doesn't see an issue with it]].
* AdrenalineMakeover: Hinata finally gets rid of her big jacket and cuts her hair.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * AffablyEvil: The Blood-taster. [[spoiler:The Kyubi while inhabiting Naruto's clone.]]
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * {{Ageless}}: Madara
* AlasPoorVillain:
** Karin gets just enough time to ask Sasuke for a fake show of affection. Sasuke gives her a real kiss, and she dies in the middle of claiming that he really did love her.
** After [[spoiler:Gouki commits SuicideByCop]], his last words are to hope that his wife will be able to find happiness in the new world. [[spoiler:Word Of God says he died without knowing she was pregnant.]]
** The many Shozokus killed during the story and even the Paths of Pein, [[spoiler:who redeem themselves shortly after Nagato mercy-re-kills them and [[DeathEqualsRedemption they die from their original wounds]].]]
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Deconstructed with Sakura and ultimately averted.
* AlmightyJanitor: Yukihana, who never made it past genin.
* AlmostDeadGuy: [[spoiler:[[TorsoWithAView Hinata]] in chapter 11 and 12]]. Saved thanks to lots of chakra, blood and a big chunk of hair.
* AlmostKiss: Hinata tries to lay one on an injured (but also not resisting) Naruto, until Sakura interrupts.
** After their first date, Hiashi interrupts Naruto and Hinata as they draw closer. Naruto plants one on her cheek instead.
* AloofBigBrother: Itachi. [[spoiler:And Gouki.]] Both genuinely care about their younger brothers and both have the worst timing telling them so; Sasuke learns about his brother's intentions [[spoiler:ten minutes before he dies]], and [[spoiler:Gouki]] ignores [[spoiler:Minato]] up until he receives news of [[spoiler:the Hokage]]'s death.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Played straight in an early chapter, and then subverted near the end.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Hiashi embarrasses Hinata badly enough that she wants to move out in chapter 7. Turn about being fair play, he is equally chagrined by Hyouta's action in the Fiance arc.
* AmusementPark: Naruto, Hinata, Neji, Tenten, Ino, and Choji go to one to try to prove that they are on vacation, not a covert mission.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: Madara's]] fate, at least until he dies.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * AndThisIsFor: "For Hinata, [[spoiler:FIVE-POINT RASENGAN!]]"
* AngelFaceDemonFace: The differences in the way the Two-Tails looks when it is under the Akatsuki's control and [[spoiler: Hinata's protection]] are like night and day.

* AnimalEyes: Orochimaru's snake-like eyes [[spoiler:mix with Sasuke's Sharingan after Orochimaru takes over Sasuke's Body.]]
* AnimalMotifs: Naruto and foxes, Orochimaru and serpents (there's scarcely a moment in the narrative when he is ''not'' referred to as a "snake"), Kisame and sharks, Kohaku and other lizards, the Inuzuka and canines, the Aburame and insects and pretty much all the summoners. The Asura Path of Pein describes Gaara as a badger/tanuki and Neji as a small falcon or a crow.
* AnimeHair: Saburo of the Grass has "light green hair" in "three, foot-long spikes" that are frequently described as looking like the trident.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: Hanabi. Kakashi calls Naruto his honorary one.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * AnthropomorphicPersonification
* AntiVillain: Gouki [[spoiler:Namikaze]] wants to rule the world, and is willing to enslave (preferably) or kill all ninjas to do it. But he genuinely believes that will make the world a better place. He treats his followers with kindness and respect. He loves his wife. And though he will kill if absolutely necessary, he prefers not to, unlike many of the 'good guys'.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * ArcherArchetype: Sakura.
* ArcWords: "Rank does not equate to skill", said a few different ways, and essentially the ArcWords for books one and two. Arguably the title also applies.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: "What about [[spoiler:Yahiko]]? Does he forgive you? Does he have the right to forgive you?"
* ArmorPiercingSlap: In the first chapter, a distraught, heartbroken, and humiliated Hinata gives one to Naruto, thanks to her overhearing an out-of-context conversation Naruto, Sakura and Shikimaru were having.
** She later gives one to Hanabi after her sister badmouths Naruto in an already tense discussion.
** Ino gives one to Kiba in chapter 71.
* ArrangedMarriage: Nyoko tries to hook up with Naruto to avoid this.
** Even though it is frowned upon and cannot be enforced in the Leaf Village, Hinata's grandfather seems to enjoy doing this. Hyouta arranges a groom for Hinata [[spoiler: and hand picked Hiashi's second wife.]]
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * ArrogantKungFuGuy: Gokki (not to be confused with Gouki), Tadashi Suzuhira.
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: The Kyubi's favorite pastimes are murder, adultery, and cheating at cards.
* ArtificialLimbs: [[spoiler:Shino]] loses a leg fighting [[spoiler:the Three-Tails Turtle]], and has it replaced by [[spoiler:a colony of insects that mimic a human leg. Until he teaches them how to do a [[ExtendableArms few other]] [[HiddenWeapons tricks.]]]]
** Not quite artificial, but Kabuto grafting Kimimaro's arm onto his body probably counts.

%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * BadassInDistress

* BadWithTheBone: Kabuto, thanks to Kimimaro's arm.
* BaitAndSwitchComparison: Done in conjunction with the AnimalMotifs example, some times after Orichimaru has summoned Manda (or one of his other snakes), the text will refer to 'the snake', and then in the next line reference Manda doing something else.
* BareYourMidriff: The Kouin sisters' "uniforms".
* BatmanGambit: Can't appeal to your opponent's better nature to break them out of mind control? Appeal to their pride instead! Making fun of your enemy, a proud heroic tradition!
** Sakura throws [[spoiler:Jirobo]] at [[spoiler:Ukon]] who is one the other side the Shishienjin (fire barrier) and maintaining it. If [[spoiler:Ukon]] opens a hole in the barrier, [[spoiler:Jirobo]] hits him, and the whole thing goes down. If he doesn't, [[spoiler:Jirobo]] burns. [[spoiler:Ukon chooses the latter.]]
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * BattleCouple: All of them. But especially Naruto and Hinata.

* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Itachi is good friends with Kisame in spite of the latter's appearance, personality and [[SealedInAPersonShapedCan burden.]] Enough that [[spoiler:Kisame was a witness at Itachi's wedding and he chooses to fulfill Itachi's last request to bring Rei (Itachi's daughter) to the Leaf village despite not being a huge fan of the Leaf village.]]
* BeingWatched: Hinata experiences this in the Raikage's castle: [[spoiler:Madara is shadowing her.]]
* BerserkButton: Sol has two, insulting Hinata and insulting the squirrel ninja clan. A certain foul-mouthed kunoichi manages to press both in as many breaths. Everyone except her brother is shocked by the result.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * BetterThanNew: Shino, Naruto, and Gai all have examples, which are spoiled other places.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: [[spoiler: The Kyubi]] chooses to die and [[spoiler:[[HeroicSacrifice merge the last remnants of her essence with Naruto]]]] rather than submit to [[spoiler:Madara again.]]

* TheBlacksmith: Naruto learns the Weapons Forge jutsu from Jiraiya. He uses it to create his, Hinata's, and Sakura's signature weapons and repair them. Neji decides to ask Naruto to make something he can give to Tenten for their wedding.
* BlessedWithSuck: Kohaku's appearance is so bland that people constantly overlook and forget about her, whether she wants it or not. Very useful as a ninja, but made it very difficult for her to get promoted and she was chosen for a suicide mission because she wouldn't be missed. [[spoiler:The men of the Namikaze family are apparently unaffected.]]
** As it turns out, [[spoiler:Naruto does have living relatives. Too bad they're trying enslave everyone he knows.]]

* CerebusRollercoaster: Book one starts off with Naruto and Hinata getting to know each other better, with a few darker hints. Then it ends with a major, if short war, and some life changing events therein. Book two returns to the light and fluffy, focusing at first on Naruto and Hinata's relationship now that they are officially a couple, and their growth as ninjas. Then in the second half [[spoiler:Naruto gets kidnapped, and his friends go AWOL to rescue him]]. Several major characters die, and other are irrevocably changed. Then the first novella of book three goes back to Naruto and Hinata's relationship, having them deal with some interference from her grandfather. The rest of the novellas in book three are much darker, killing more major characters and pushing others to their breaking point. Then book four is about [[spoiler: the Fourth Ninja War]]. --> ''The main portion of [[spoiler: Hinata]]'s gown was a shimmering, medium-weight, pure white silk mikado. The edges of the fabric were all stitched with a golden filigree of small, overlapping triangles. The bride's dress was strapless like those of her attendants. But the pale beauty's bodice was so perfectly fitted it almost appeared to be paint instead of fabric. It clung tightly to every curve of her exquisite breasts, dipping slightly between her cleavage. The gown wrapped around her toned stomach, revealing the slight indent of her navel. The upper portion of the dress also had short sleeves connected under her arms, covering from the middle of her biceps to just above [[spoiler: Hinata]]'s elbows. Unlike her friends, the young woman wore no gloves, and her engagement ring shone brightly on her finger. The ivory material split just below the waist, creating a wide slit in front while the rest of the dress flared out dramatically, flowing around her in vertical pleats. A cape-like extension off the back of the bodice and sleeves added an additional layer to the back of the gown. The silk ended a full six-inches above the floor. Underneath there was an underskirt of pale lavender, but unlike the white silk this part of the dress had a matte finish. The second layer went all the way to the floor, and as was also visible through the gap in the front. The bride wore a simple silver circlet on her head, with a veil of lace hanging out of the headpiece down to just below her chin.''
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: Naruto invokes this in his WarriorTherapist discussion that induces [[spoiler: Nagato]]'s HeelFaceTurn. He says that [[spoiler:Gouki]] could have tried to convince the rest of the world to take up his cause. [[spoiler:Nagato]] counters that they never would have agreed. Naruto agrees with him, but says that if [[spoiler:Gouki]] was really a good guy, he would have at least attempted it.

* InfinityMinusOneSword: Kitsune. Naruto forged it 'quickly' to fight Ninja!Reaper, but it lasts most of the story, going toe-to-toe with the legendary Kusanagi, before ultimately falling to the chakra stealing powers of Syphon.
* InLoveWithTheMark: Itachi's wife Erika was sent to acquire his DNA the old fashioned way, but when he refused to comply, she fell for him instead.

* MyGreatestFailure: Subverted. While Naruto [[spoiler: failed to rescue Sasuke]], he’s assured that what happened was better than what could have happened.
** On the other hand, Choza, Inochi and Shikaku all regret not being there for Naruto for [[MissingMom Yukihana's]] sake.
** Yukihana helping seal the Kyuubi into Naruto. Minato for sealing the Kyuubi in him in the first place.

* NiceJobFixingItVillain: Orochimaru's use of an incorrectly translated jutsu allows Naruto to have a certain DeadPersonConversation. Sixty some chapters later, recalling that conversation helps Naruto make the choice to continue his mission instead of [[AlwaysSaveTheGirl saving the girl]]. Which ultimately ends up being pivotal in the ending.

* TheNondescript: Kohaku's natural appearance. See BlessedWithSuck
* NoodleIncident: The last chapter makes mention of the Summoning Wars. This incident doesn't occur in the story and isn't elaborated upon beyond the very basic one-sentence summary.
** Sometime during book one, Kakashi was seriously poisoned on a mission, and was hospitalized for two weeks. He has a nasty scar on the back of his left hand because of it. And that's all we know about that.
** The Nine-Tails was forced to attack and destroy the Village Hidden in the Lakes, and is unhappy about that. And that's all we know about that.
* NoSell: Demons can't affect others. [[spoiler:Thus, Naruto's blood is useless to the Blood-taster.]]

* OffscreenAfterlife: Goddess!Reaper says that she guides souls to (and in some cases back from) the afterlifes, but does not control them. Minato is unable to describe his time in her belly. And though gates to one afterlife are described, what is on the other side is not illuminated.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome:
** Hinata's performance in the unseen in canon Chunin Exam wherein she was promoted. Though she only gives Naruto a quick run down, she is happy enough with how she did that she boasts a little.
** Kohaku Zoishin fought Minato Namikaze in the semi-finals of the Chunin exam that saw Minato promoted. The battle lasted about ninety minutes and left everyone who saw it seriously impressed with the skills of both Genin, even if most of them don't remember [[PerceptionFilter Kohaku's name or appearance]].
** When Kohaku was attacked by two teams of Hunter Ninjas from her village, their Genjutsu blinded her, so the reader does not get to see how Gouki took them down. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] when the same fight is shown from Gouki's point of view.
* OhCrap: Chapter 17, when a bunch of second-rate criminals realize their 'hostages' are undercover ninjas.
* OhMyGods: Naruto says 'oh my gods' or 'thank the gods'. He actually meets one, who basically confirms there are multiple deities.
* OneLiner: "And now I'm covered in frog spit."
* OneManArmy: Naruto acts as the Leaf's primary assault force in the liberation of the Hidden Grass. The Sand forces participating make an effort not to let him show them up.
* OneWingedAngel: Orchimaru, but in this story his 'Soul Shell' looks more like an [[EvilAlbino albino version]] of [[WesternAnimation/HeManAndTheMastersOfTheUniverse2002 King Hiss]]. [[spoiler:Also, when taunted, the spirits of the first four Hokages show that they can do the same thing.]]

* OptOut: After the medallion controlling it is destroyed, the Three-Tails Turtle tries to beat feet instead of continuing to fight the heroes.
* OriginalCharacter: Many, of varying degrees of significance. Some of the more prominent ones are:
** Yukihana Uzumaki, [[{{Jossed}} Naruto's mother.]]
** Sol and Luné, Hinata's squirrel familiars
** Doraku, Blood Taster demon
** Nyoko Honokata, princess of the Land of Fire
** Kaede Mizuno, Mist Hunter and daughter of the Mizukage
** The Reaper of Shinobi, AxeCrazy reoccurring villain
** Natsuki, Gaara's bodyguard
** Keiko and Kei Takamichi, identical cousins and Hanabi's teammates [[spoiler: and her cousins]]
** Yasuo Mizuno, the Mizukage
** Mitsuru Jishin, the Tsuchikage
** Kohaku [[spoiler: Namikaze]], the Six Tails Jinchuriki [[spoiler: and Naruto's aunt by marriage]]
** Gouki[[spoiler: Namikaze]], the GreaterScopeVillain [[spoiler: and Naruto's uncle]]
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: They are demons and cannot change humans into vampires. When they drink a human's blood they gain that person's chakra, jutsu (including Kekkei Genkai), and can control the person, even after death.
** Doraku actually takes offense at being called a vampire, though suspects his kind was the source of the legend.
* OutGambitted: [[spoiler:Poor Sasuke and Itachi.]]
* PaintingTheMedium: In the PDF release, when the Kyubi takes over Naruto's body, the text color of the possessed Naruto's speech turns red.

* PassingTheTorch: Tsunade and Jiraiya discuss the possibility of Naruto, Hinata and Sakura taking up the Sannin title.
** [[spoiler: Gouki]] decides to trust in Naruto and company's idea of a better world, and structures his death to try to help them.
* PerceptionFilter: [[TheNondescript Kohaku]] is a living one, much to her regret.
* PetTheDog: Gouki treats all of his subordinates with respect, even the ones who don't deserve it. [[spoiler: He even lets Konan and later, Nagato and his acolytes leave in peace, because they are his friends, not prisoners.]]
** Averted when it's pointed out that Kabuto healed Hinata; he did it for his pride, not for her sake.
** The Kyubi is gleefully evil but she generally avoids kids and sick people [[BloodKnight (too easy to kill)]] and will let a man live if he's good in bed. And more importantly, she did not CHOOSE to attack the Lake or Leaf villages.
** [[spoiler:She eventually chooses to die and thus fuels Naruto's kekkei genkai.]]

* PowerPerversionPotential: Ninja Arts: Shiatsu Fingers is ostensibly a combat technique but it's best used for infiltration... or seduction.
* PowersAsPrograms: The Grass village attempts to do this, coding jutsu on to circuits. That way, rather than go through the time consuming process of learning a technique, anyone with a enough chakra control can just use it. The project is ultimately abandoned thanks to Naruto pointing out three glaring weaknesses during his fight with the beta tester.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * PowerTrio: Naruto, Hinata, and Sakura
* PrecisionFStrike: The 'S' word shows up only five times in the story, though the 'F' word does not.
* {{Pride}}: Given by Kabuto as the reason he saved Hinata during the Chunin exams (in canon). He just wanted to prove he was better than the entire Konoha medical corps (because he diagnosed and healed Hinata in minutes, something they couldn't do in a month).
* PrisonRiot: The Human Path Pein causes one in the Leaf Village to aid his and the Ninja Reaper's escape.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * TheProblemWithFightingDeath: She’ll do whatever it takes to collect your soul if you try to screw her over.
* {{Psychopomp}}: Goddess!Reaper
* PunchClockVillain: The Acolytes of Pein don't particularly like what they are doing, or what it does to Nagato, but they are unflinchingly loyal to him.
* PuttingTheBandBackTogether: Yugao, Anko, Iruka eventually make amends.
* RagsToRiches: When Naruto becomes a full, legal adult he is given access to his mother's savings and his grandfather's royalty checks. Combined with his own royalty checks, and his frugal nature, he ends up with a "personal net worth exceeds that of some of the smaller clans in this village" according to Hiashi.
* RandomPowerRanking: In addition to the normal E-S rank of missions and Bingo Book entries, the story adds X-Rank, indicating the threat requires the tactical intercession of two or more of the big five villages.
* RankInflation: X-Rank missions and missing ninjas, as mentioned in RandomPowerRanking.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * RazorFloss: Sasame.
* RealMenCook: Naruto is a very good cook, but initially refuses to do so, because he hates cleaning up, and Jiraiya (who forced him to learn how to cook in the first place) was very picky about Naruto's efforts. That changes as Hinata (and others) compliment his skills, and Hinata is more than willing to do the dishes.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Hinata has to give Hanabi one in chapter 23, complete with ArmorPiercingSlap.
** She gives another to Sakura in 53.
* RebelliousPrincess: Nyoko. Not as bad as some, but she does force her father to let her go to a normal high school, and then bend the rules and restrictions on her as far as she can without breaking them. Especially in the Yuletide Arc.
* RedemptionEarnsLife: [[spoiler: Nagato]]'s redemption saves him from an early grave by giving Tsunade a chance to heal him.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: A few characters qualify for this, but the most obvious textbook example is [[spoiler: Sasuke.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Like canon, Naruto's eyes turn red when he uses the Fox's chakra. Or when the Fox takes over one of his clones. But twice he turns his eyes red without using the Fox's power, to trick/intimidate his opponent.
* RedHerring: A chapter spends a good deal of time on [[spoiler:Hinata's Suigin Rasengan]], which is never shown again and only mentioned in passing. [[spoiler:The point of the chapter is sowing the seeds of Hinata mastering the Five-Points Rasengan, and Naruto inspiring her Singularity Rasengan.]]
* RedHerringMole: [[spoiler:Danzo. The actual mole is Homura.]]
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * RedOniBlueOni: Naruto or Sakura and Hinata.
* RelationshipUpgrade: Naruto and Hinata get four. Most of the other couples get one on-screen.
* RetiredBadass: [[spoiler:Kakashi, to raise Rei.]] He gets out of retirement occasionally, though.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: After the Blood Drinker Doraku appears to kill Hinata in chapter 11, Naruto unleashes two previously unseen jutsu, and shreds large chunks of the demon's body with Rasengans. When the demon taunts him with the fact that Naruto can't kill him, Naruto blows a hole through Doruka's chest, drives a stalagmite through the hole, pinning Doraku to a cave wall and then has his Blood Clones collapse the cave on top of the vampire.
* RomanceArc: Book 1 is mostly about how Naruto fell for Hinata, and how she got comfortable around him.
* RoofHopping: Naruto, Hinata, and Kankuro during the [[ChristmasEpisode Yuletide Arc]].
* RunningGag: Kakashi and Yugao are a couple. Didja know that?

[[spoiler: The truth is that while she is better now that she has been forced into sanity, Neji and Tenten were also holding back somewhat.]]
* SantaClausmas: Yuletide has most of the trappings of Christmas, including a Santa figure. But it is not tied to any of the gods in the story.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * SaveThePrincess: Averted the first time as she is never captured, but played straight the second time.
%% commented out as Administrivia/ZeroContextExample * ScaledUp: Orochimaru's Soul Shell.

* ScaryShinyGlasses: Kabuto, when he gives his BreakingSpeech to Hinata.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveSupernaturalPowers: Even [[BroughtDownToNormal without her chakra]], she's [[BroughtDownToBadass still hilariously strong.]]
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Happens a few times. Tsunade weaponizes this, giving Naruto and company a certain order she knows they will break and wants them to break.

** The five Kages and the leaders of three Kekkei Genkai clans hold the secret origins of bloodline traits.
** Tsunade and Jiraiya, with Kakashi and Shizune as backup, keep the secret of Naruto's father's identity.
* SempaiKohai: The honorific senpai is used frequently (particularly Yugao to Kakashi). The Kouin sisters refer to Sasuke as 'kohai' and Kabuto as 'senpai'.
* SenselessSacrifice: Karin's death qualifies. She died fighting Kisame so he could not interfere with Sasuke's fight with Itachi. Except Kisame would not have interfered in the first place, and would not have even attacked Sasuke in the event of Itachi's loss, because it would have gone against Itachi's wishes. Not to mention the effect her death had on Sasuke...

* SlaveMooks: The Shozokus qualify, even though roughly half of them volunteered. They are required to swear unbreakable oaths to follow Gouki's orders and basic laws like not killing or stealing. In that order. THey also can't let anyone know they are a Shozoku, without dying.
