Fanfic / War of the Krork

Go To

The War of the Krork is a Warhammer 40K quest by Red Flag, starring the Ork Warboss Skullkrak Godstompa whose Waaagh! ends up evolving him and his forces into the Krork. Based heavily off LordLucan's Story: The Shape of the Nightmare to Come, the quest starts during the End Times, and continues well past them.

It can be found here.

Tropes Include:

  • An Arm and a Leg:
    • Happens occasionally to Skullkrak and his krew, but thankfully they're able to replace their lost limbs with Power Klaws or other such flashy (and useful) equipment.
    • This hilariously happened to Zogstruk, but in this case he explosively lost both his arms and legs due to over-straining himself when he channelled extremely potent Waaagh! energies to be unleashed at the enemy. He then proceeded to yell at the enemy to come closer so he can bite them.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!:
    • The Orks' sole existence and purpose as a species, and mostly the reason why they're so damn good at waging Waaagh! on the other gits of the galaxy, since because "Da Galaxy belongs to da Orks!".
    • Waaagh! Skullkrak takes it to a new level, however, with Skullkrak himself directing attacks on multiple fronts with other Ork characters like Grimgul, Skarsnik, Orkkenheimer, Zogstruk and Burrghus leading them at his command.
  • Back from the Dead:
    • After arriving at a certain point of the quest, fallen Ork characters can now get resurrected. Presumably, this is due to the Orks' natural gestalt energies coalescing through the power of their Waaagh! as it grew stronger, as the Orks' strong and stubbornly-held beliefs have eventually made it so that they are now essentially immortal. Though dead named Ork characters do take some time to come back into action.
    • For example, Zogstruk - Skullkrak's most powerful Weirdboy in his Waaagh! - died at some point into the quest. He later came back alive without realizing it somehow, even confusing Skullkrak and making him lampshade the former's out of the green resurrection.
  • Bad Boss: Skullkrak himself from time to time, as well as the majority of his boyz - especially his Mekboyz and Painboyz. They tend to use unfortunate Grots or Gretchins in their experiments or research, sometimes even appropriating items or limbs from other healthy Orks unlucky enough to be stolen from, usually under the pretense that said Orks "were overcome with generosity".
  • Black Comedy: Since the protagonists of the quest are Orks, this is a given. This also extends to the Orks themselves as a whole - and in one example during the early parts of the quest, a Mekboy's test pilot was encouraged to shoot down another pilot flying overhead, simply because the other git owed him teef.
  • Blood Knight: The followers of Khorne, naturally. Also, the entirety of Waaagh! Skullkrak. Skullkrak himself is perhaps the greatest one of them all amongst the Orks.
  • Calling Your Attacks: One of Zogstruk's character quirks, often to the annoyance of Skullkrak and his Waaagh!.
  • Character Death: Several famous Warhammer 40K characters perish including Abaddon the Despoiler, Huron Blackheart, Magnus, Lorgar Aurelian and Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka along with his entire faction of The Beast Set Loose. Even Ghazghkull's supposedly impossible to keep dead second in command Tuska The Daemon Killa perished for good
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Zogstruk, on account of being a Weirdboy, the Orkish equivalent of a Psyker.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: The Minderz that follow the Weirdboyz of Waaagh! Skullkrak around, acting as their bodyguards and bullies, the latter especially so when Skullkrak needs the lot of them to do something Psyker-related.
  • Death World: Skullkrak and his krew comes across a lot of these during the quest, on many of which they fought their inhabitants in prolonged campaigns in order to take the planets for themselves! Needless to say, da boyz in green won those battles and had much fun doing so.
  • Eldritch Abomination:
    • The many inhabitants of the Death Worlds Waaagh! Skullkrak comes across and fights, including a terrifying creature so immense, it was believed by some of da boyz to be long enough to have looped around its home planet's diameter several times over.
  • Eldritch Location:
    • The many Daemon Worlds that Skullkrak and his boyz occasionally finds and krumps during the quest, although they revert back to being normal planets once the Waaagh!'s gestalt energies completely burns away the influence of Chaos from them. The descriptions of their corrupt forms can get pretty damn nauseating.
    • The Death Worlds themselves also counts. One such example had floating, transparent clouds of highly compressed sound that destroyed Ork ships by the hundred thousands when they were 'popped'. Another had floating islands that acted as bizarre moving platforms from which multitudes of tendril-extending carnivorous plants used to snatch prey.
  • I Am Spartacus: One threadmark mentions the revolt of a human named Asparticus to explain the failure of a research project. His followers attempted the trope once defeated... unfortunately, their Grot allies weren't nearly as honorable.
  • Large and in Charge: As of time of writing, Skullkrak Godstompa stands at 16m tall.
  • Mad Scientist: Orkkenheimer, one of Skullkrak's top lieutenants.
  • Made a Slave: The sad fates of some of the factions who are beaten by Waaagh! Skullkrak, who are then used to further feed the Orks' Waaagh! efforts, often at shoota or choppa point and usually until every single one of the newly made slaves dies by sheer over-exhaustion from being 'put ta werk'.
  • Meaningful Name: Skullkrak Godstompa eventually kills a C'tan shard of the Nightbringer.
  • More Dakka:
    • The Trope Namers and greatest examples of it, as well as one of the things the Orks always want and love to have more of. Of course, there's "Nevah enuff DAKKA!" for the Orks.
    • One of Waaagh! Skullkrak's new warships, the Dethdeala, is this to the Orks. It's a type of assault ship covered in enough gun batteries, the sight of one would probably make the Orks in other Waaagh!s turn even greener with envy (or attempt to out-Dakka it).
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Inquistor Kryptmann's reaction to seeing The New Devourer emerge victorious from the Octarius War.
  • Names to Run From Really Fast: Butcher Burrghus, Skullkrak Godstompa and so on.
  • Number Two: Skarsnik, to Skullkrak.
  • Ramming Always Works: The appropriately named Ramships designed and built by Waaagh! Skullkrak's Mekboyz - they are made for the sole purpose of hitting enemy ships with their armored prows, frequently to devastating effect. Assault Kroozers also count, as they too ram into enemy ships, not only to damage them but to also deploy scores of Orks onto their decks and prevent their targets from easily escaping!
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: How most fights against the New Devourer went before the Krork could afford to drown it with overwhelming numbers.
  • Serial Escalation: The whole quest. It started out with Skullkrak ruling a few worlds to leading a massive green wave of carnage and conquest, while at the same time, his Waaagh!'s enemies have evolved as well, like the Beast, Dragon Men, Qlippoth and other such escalating horrors.
  • Shout-Out: Aplenty, but too many to choose from for examples as of this writing.
  • That's No Moon: Nightshard, a planet that turns out to be a Necron World Engine. Then you start building your own...
  • Villain Protagonist : The stars of the quest are Orks, and are about as gleefully, rowdily omnicidal as it is possible for them to be. Even when they become the Krork (again), they mostly just become more competent at what they do.
  • We Have Reserves: One of the reasons why Waaagh! Skullkrak is so successful - there's just that many Orks under Skullkrak's command, all of whom are happy to have been given an excuse to kill something, while having the time of the lives stomping and krumping across the galaxy.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: One scene has Grimgul watching two human slaves "Fightin' for dominance" on their bed.
  • Your Head Asplode: Frequently happens to a lot of nearby Orks whenever Zogstruk or the other Weirdboyz start using their powers.
