Turnabout Lockdown is an Ace Attorney Fan Fic written by cyberwulf. Set after the events of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Apollo is roped into defending his former mentor, Kristoph Gavin after a fire broke out at the State Penitentiary. Kristoph Gavin is charged with murdering his cellmate... Diego Armando.

This fic can be read either on Archive Of Our Own or on FanFiction.net.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Always Murder: Subverted, a rarity for Ace Attorney. Diego's death was an accident that was made to look like a murder in order to frame Kristoph.
  • Batman Gambit: Penitentiary Warden Stanford Peace's plan to get rid of Kristoph was to place him in a cell with Diego Armando, who was known to have become extremely violent, and expecting Diego to kill Kristoph himself eventually. However, thanks to now-nurse Iris Hawthorne, Diego had access to mood stabilizers that returned him to a stable state of mind. Despite Diego's death, he managed to arrange the scene to make Kristoph look like he murdered his cellmate.
  • Bullying a Dragon:
    • During his first week in jail, Daryan Crescend attempted to make himself a reputation to stay safe by picking a fight. The one he chose was the old man with Parkinson's disease who wasn't able to see without his prosthetics. Diego nearly beat Crescend to death with a food tray.
    • Furio Tigre tried intimidating Diego into leaving Kristoph be at one point, dumping the contents of his ashtray into his coffee. Though Diego did not retaliate to Tigre, he later let Kristoph know that he wasn't afraid of Tigre's threats.
  • The Cameo: Winston Payne cameos with his wife to pay his final respects to Diego.
  • Death by Irony: Diego's death was caused because he was trying to help Kristoph during the fire. He was under the effects of mood stabilizers, which had returned him to a stable state of mind. However, Kristoph was panicking because he was scared shitless of the man who had been terrorizing him for six weeks straight. Kristoph mistook it for an attempted assault while all Diego was trying to do was get him away from the smoke. Diego is all too aware of that it's his own fault.
  • The Dreaded: Due to brain damage believed to be caused by Dahlia's poison, Diego had become increasingly violent, earning himself a vicious reputation amongst the inmates except Rowdy Kitaki, who believed himself to be Diego's best friend. Even Kristoph Gavin was terrified of the man, who over the course of six weeks scared the usually cool and stoic ex-attorney into a cowing mess.
  • Death by Adaptation: Diego Armando/Godot.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Edgeworth espouses this view towards Diego's actions that landed him in jail in the first place.
Edgeworth: Wright, as much as I hate to say it, you can't put it all on Hawthorne. Armando had a choice, and he chose to murder a woman. Maya's mother, in fact. He didn't have to be on that mountain that night. He had plenty of other options and I don't care how difficult or painful it was for him to take them.
  • Handicapped Badass: Prior to his death, Diego Armando was still wearing his visor, on top of being diagnosed with Parkinson's and his advancing age. Despite this, he was feared by nearly everyone in the prison due to his violent tendencies.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Diego spent six weeks terrorizing Kristoph. When a fire broke out and he tried to get him out of the top bunk away from the smoke, Kristoph thought it was an attack, which caused him to fight back and make the bunks topple, fatally hitting Diego's head on the toilet bowl.
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: Like all Ace Attorney cases, this fanfic uses the term "Turnabout" in its title.
  • Jerkass: Warden Peace starts out quite nice and affable, but after he's accused of lying in court and killing Diego Armando he becomes much ruder and colder towards Apollo in later encounters.
  • Knight Templar: Warden Peace, who framed Kristoph purely so he'd be forced to stay in prison forever, because he does not believe prisoners can be reformed.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Kristoph himself was this, amassing a number of allies amongst the personnel that was the reason for his Luxury Prison Suite during Apollo Justice. He's lost most of his privileges and support due to Warden Peace firing several of the guards he had in his pockets and moving others around, then moving him into another cell with much more limited luxuries.
  • Not Me This Time: Despite having been found guilty for two murders and an attempted murder, Kristoph Gavin claims that he had nothing to do with Diego Armando's death. For once, he's telling the truth.
  • Original Character:
    • Stanford Peace, warden of the State Penitentiary.
    • Doctor Todd de Àth, Chief Medical Officer at the Penitentiary Morgue.
    • Miriam Kovacs, the prison psychologist.
    • Rowdy Kitaki, Winfred "Big Wins" Kitaki's nephew who is incarcerated for second degree murder after robbing a convenience store and shooting the clerk. Due to "Big Wins" going straight, Rowdy found himself without mob protection or perks.
  • Punny Name:
    • Warden Stanford Peace ("Stand for peace" or "War, then peace").
    • Doctor Todd de Àth. (Doctor Death, which doubles as an In-Series Nickname).
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Despite it not being on his official prescription, Iris gave Diego mood stabilizers in favour of the usual, increasing doses of tranquilizing drugs he was taking, risking her job to help him.
  • Spanner in the Works: Now-Nurse Iris Hawthorne, who provided Diego with mood stabilizing drugs and messed up Warden Peace's plan to get rid of Kristoph Gavin by returning Diego to a more stable state of mind.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Diego's reason for tormenting Kristoph: killing Zak Gramayre and Drew Misham, Trucy Wright and Vera Misham's fathers, and despite being behind bars continuing his life as he did before.
"Because I know you," Armando snarled. "You don't care that you're in prison. You continue on just like you did outside, using people to get what you want, manipulating them for your own amusement. This place can't punish men like you." He leaned down to Kristoph's level. "But I can. And I'm going to make you suffer for what you did to those little girls."
  • Villainous Breakdown: When his tampering of the scene is discovered, Warden Peace's jacket splits at the shoulders and he snaps, slightly slumping on the stand with a look of pure malevolence on his face and begining a tirade.
Stanford Peace: You people. You goddamn bleeding heart reformers. And you! You call yourself a prosecutor? You belong over there with them. You think Gavin's going to be rehabilitated or sorry when he gets out? You think he'll be too old and clapped out to be a danger? When he kills someone else his first week out of prison, you'll wring your hands and cry about how the system failed. Well the system doesn't fail - you failed the system! I Did What I Had to Do, to keep that from happening!
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Apollo delivers one to Phoenix, calling him out on his manipulations during the events of the last game and roping him into defending Kristoph without even informing Apollo that it was him.
