Fanfic / The Tale of Nagato Uzumaki

Go To

The Tale of Nagato Uzumaki by YAXON is a Naruto story of What If?, after training with Jiraiya for two years, Nagato, Yahiko and Konan decided to follow their sensei back to Konoha instead of staying in Ame and trying to overthrow Hanzo on their own. Naturally, their presence in Konoha causes many events to take different turns from canon, resulting in a completely different story.

The fanfic has the following tropes:

  • Abled in the Adaptation: The circumstances in which Nagato loses the ability to use his legs never happens and is not bound to a wheelchair and less dependent on using the Six Paths of Pain as representatives.
  • Action Mom: Konan. She was first Naruto's surrogate mother, and later had two kids of her own with Nagato. Still, she never stopped being a kunoichi.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Due to not dying after having Isobu sealed inside her and having the seal properly managed, Rin is a lot stronger, especially taking into account that Isobu is willing to help her.
    • Naruto has been properly trained before graduation due to having family and role models who are willing to help him.
    • Sakura is handled to deal with the shinobi world due to being placed in Kurenai's team and the jonin taking a more hands on approach with her training.
  • Adaptational Deviation: It's mentioned that Kakashi's Sharingan in this story comes from Kagami, not Obito.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Nagato and Konan are the most obvious examples due to moving to Konoha.
    • The Akatsuki as an organization remains true to its goal of peace and is uncorrupted by outsiders.
    • Obito never fell to darkness due to taking a different mission during the Third War.
    • Due to ROOT being wiped out before he could be recruited Kabuto never started his path to darkness either, and remained a loyal Konoha ninja.
  • Adaptational Job Change: After the Kyūbi attack and due to Yahiko not being killed off, Nagato becomes the Fifth Hokage after Minato died.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Due to the nail, the organization tasked in carrying out Madara's plans is simply called Moon's Eye.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Because of the changes Nagato brought as the Godaime, both Kabuto and Sasuke are genuinely good people.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Haku and Zabuza are not only villainous here, but are also members of the Moon's Eye (the organization tasked in carrying Madara's plans in this fic).
    • Due to the nail, Shisui is the Uchiha Madara chose to carry his name and plan.
  • Adaptational Wimp:
    • Yagura Karatachi is not as strong as a result of him not being the Sanbi Jinchuriki.
    • Obito is unable to preform Wood Release techniques due to his body not being retrofitted with White Zetsu matter.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: A lot thanks to the presence of the Ame Orphans, some notable examples as followed:
    • Minato and Kushina bond with Nagato, Kushina in particular as both are Uzumakis.
    • Because of the above, Naruto and Nagato form an uncle-nephew relationship.
    • The Orphans serve as Naruto's guardians after Minato and Kushina die during the Kyūbi attack.
    • Despite not spending too much time in Konoha, Karin considers it to be her home because she has actual family there in the form of Nagato, his kids, and Naruto. It also helps that she is treated as a person instead of an asset by them. In canon, she and Naruto hardly interact and she and Nagato don't likely even know each other.
    • Nagato and Konan become a couple after the latter's relationship with Yahiko didn't work out.
    • Obito serves as Naruto's mentor instead of being an enemy. In addition, he isn't Madara's apprentice in this fic, Shisui is.
    • In canon, Tobi/Obito and Konan had a particularly hostile relationship even when they were colleagues in the Akatsuki, before becoming outright enemies once the latter defected. Here, Konan ends up befriending the young Obito, becoming an older sister figure to him.
  • Amicable Exes: Yahiko and Konan's relationship doesn't work, but they still remain good friends.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Obito and later Naruto call Konan "Koko".
    • Yahiko calls Nagato "Rings".
    • Strangely enough, Itachi calling Sasuke his "foolish little brother" is actually this.
    • Fuu calls Naruto "Blondie", a nickname he does not appreciate.
  • Age Lift: Kakashi roughly shares his age with Obito here.
  • Birds of a Feather: Platonic example: being two geniuses who love to do nothing, Shikamaru and Kakashi instantly click with each other.
Shikamaru: I'm starting to like this guy.
Kakashi: I think this is the start of a beautiful friendship.
  • The Chains of Command: It takes no time for Nagato to see that being Hokage is an incredibly demanding and taxing job.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Obito and Rin eventually become a couple. How they became a couple is detailed in the side story "Through the Years".
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Kakashi made a bet against Gai regarding which team makes it further in the Chunin Exams (the loser has to publicily admit that the winner is the better sensei). Kakashi told his Genin that if they made him lose the bet, he'll make them wear Gai and Lee's green jumpsuit for a whole year.
  • Cool Big Sis:
    • Konan becomes this to Obito.
    • Later, Rin also becomes this to Naruto, especially after she becomes the jinchuuriki of the Three-Tails.
  • The Corrupter: Played for Laughs. Obito and Kakashi are this to Naruto, with Obito encouraging Naruto's pranks, and Kakashi slowly turning him into a pervert.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Instead of committing suicide, Danzo is killed by Nagato when the latter finds all the extreme, and perhaps illegal, acts he did in the name of Konoha.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Fuu says that being the jinchuriki of the strongest bijuu, she expected Naruto to be taller and more muscular.
  • For Want Of A Nail: What if the Ame orphans decided to move to Konoha with Jiraiya?
  • Genius Ditz: Fuu may be rather ditzy, but she's one kickass kunoichi.
  • Genki Girl:
    • Male example: Naruto as a toddler, and as a kid to a lesser degree, who's described as an hyperactive ball of energy that will exhaust any adult that spends more than five minutes with him.
    • Fū is pretty much described as a super cheerful and chipper wrecking ball.
  • Guile Hero: During the Chunin Exams prelims, two characters managed to defeat superior opponents by tricking them into surrender:
    • First, during the match of Kiba versus Ajisai (an Amegakure Kunoichi). Kiba is clearly the superior combatant, so Ajisai nails Akamaru with a syringe that makes the dog drop motionless. Ajisai says that she injected Akamaru with a fast acting poison, and will only give Kiba the antidote if he forfeits. Kiba does so, and Ajisai then reveals that there's no antidote...because there's no poison either. What she actually injected Akamaru was a mere tranquilizer. Kiba was far from amused.
    • Later during the fight of Naruto versus Neji, Naruto manages to place a paper bomb at Neji's feet, and tells Neji that he can either forfeit or get blown up. Neji does so, but Naruto activates the paper bomb nevertheless...and revealing it wasn't a normal bomb, but a confetti bomb. Neji was enraged.
  • Hand Gagging: Both Naruto, Hinata and Shikamaru do this to Fuu at them same time before she (rather casually) outs Naruto as a jinchuriki.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • Orochimaru becomes a traitor.
    • The Nine-Tails attack happens exactly as in canon, despite Nagato's presence and how the Ame oprhans changed the outcome of many events preceding it.
    • Konoha is invaded during the Chunin Exams, albeit Orochimaru getting help from Kumo and Kiri instead from Suna.
  • Mythology Gag: Turns out Obito has different "personas" when training his genin and other inexperienced ninjas. One of them is named Tobi, which involved wearing a one-eyed empty mask, and acting like a complete Manchild (well, more than usual). This persona is the one everybody, but especially Itachi, hates the most.
  • Original Character: Mostly subverted. Some characters may appear to be OCs, but they are actually very minor canon characters (though some of them are anime-only characters), such as Ajisai, Kyūsuke or Izumi Uchiha. The author has claimed to greatly dislike OCs, and none will be featured in the story if it can be avoided. The only notable exceptions are Nagato and Konan's children.
  • Parental Substitute: Nagato, Konan and to a lesser extend Yahiko, towards Naruto after his parents' deaths.
  • Red Baron: Thanks to his ability to turn intangible, Obito is later known as the "Red Eyed Phantasm".
  • Ship Sinking: While it was hinted in canon that Yahiko and Konan had a relationship before the former's death, here the relationship doesn't work out, and later Konan ends up with Nagato.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Konan towards Naruto and Sakura. She convinces Naruto to stop pursuing her, and be just friends with her instead. In the end, Naruto admits that it's for the best.
  • Spared by the Adaptation:
    • Because of the fic's premise, Yahiko doesn't die.
    • Rin isn't forced to end her life after becoming the Sanbi Jinchuriki.
    • Sakumo isn't Driven to Suicide.
    • Hizashi doesn't sacrifice his life to save Hiashi's since Yahiko is the one who killed Kumo's Head Ninja.
    • The Uchiha Clan is spared from their genocidal fate because Nagato kills Danzō before the latter can give Itachi the order.
  • The Stations of the Canon: Averted. Mizuki is deal with in a smilar but still diferent way than in canon, the Wave Arc is entirely ignored (thanks to Gatou being murdered by Zabuza and Kakuzu long before Tazuna hires Konoha for help), and thus Team 7's first C-rank mission is something different (albeit it's also an escort job) and it's done alongside Team Gai.
  • Team Member in the Adaptation: In this fic, Team 7 is made up of Naruto, Shikamaru, and Hinata; Team 8 is made up of Sakura, Choji, and Shino; and Team 10 is made up of Sasuke, Ino, and Kiba.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Shikamaru's reaction when he finds he will be in the same team as Naruto. Not because he dislikes him as a person, but being the embodiment of lazyness and a lover of quietness, Shikamaru doesn't appreciate being put in the same team with a loud, hyperactive kid.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: Nagato was pretty horrified upon seeing the ins and outs of Root (especially the part in which you're forced to kill your best friend in order to supress your emotions), but upon finding that Danzo was responsible of Ame's horrible, horrible political state, his first action was to disband Root and try to arrest Danzo.
  • You Are in Command Now: After Minato's death, Nagato reluctantly decides to honor Minato's last wishes and becomes the Fifth Hokage.
