"The Sickening" is a Sherlock Holmes fanfiction written by Madam'zelle Giry. It is being published in intermittent chapters, the first of which was published on fanfiction.net in September of 2012. It is an erstwhile sequel to "The Ghost Map".

The author's summary is as follows:

London recovers from the grips of a raging cholera epidemic. A man washes up on the banks of the Thames, dead under mysterious conditions. Bouts of sickness claim their prey, and a wealthy family must cope with tragedies and insanity. Amongst it all, Sherlock Holmes must sort out the tangle of threads that obscure the true purpose of these seemingly unconnected events.

The Sickening contains examples of:

  • Direct Line to the Author: Of sorts. The story is made up of first-person police reports, diaries and letters.
  • Downer Beginning: And how. Holmes, writing after the fact, relates that Watson disappeared and Mrs Hudson is dead.
  • It's Personal: There is an element of personal antagonism to the conflict, as there often is in any battle between Holmes and Moriarty. But the opening narration is by Holmes, not Watson, and goes on to allude to the disappearance of John Watson and the death of Martha Hudson.
