Fanfic / Silence of the Hare

Go To

Silence of the Hare is an Elsewhere Fic by Mind Jack set in the Kung Fu Panda universe. It centers around a young snow hare named Yin Bei. After her parents' deaths at the hand of a mysterious villain who claimed to be her brother, Yin Bei swears revenge. Along the way, Bei discovers that she has been given a gift from godlike beings known as Lonesome Ones, in order to face her brother's forces in a battle between gods. Unfortunately, her gift of enhanced perception, dubbed "The Sight", causes her to have an extremely bad case of sensory overload with most people, dubbed "The Haze".

This work contains examples of:

  • Ancient Order Of Protectors: The Order of the Owls fall under both.
  • And I Must Scream: The Watcher is trapped in a prison where he is perpetually burned just to keep him from escaping, his Healing Factor keeping him alive. Then Yang Chao makes it even worse.
  • Ax-Crazy: Describes Yang Chao perfectly.
  • Berserk Button: Calling Bei a bunny or rabbit.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Yin Bei doesn't talk too much, especially around strangers, but she doesn't need to be a conversationalist to kick butt.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Gishi laughs, jokes, and smiles often, but is a powerful fighter with a bit of a sadistic streak.
  • Big Bad: Yang Chao
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Any fight involving Yang Chao. The one against Bing stands out, with Chao incapacitating him almost immediately.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: The story starts with Bei's.
  • Death by Irony: E Jile, the villainous glutton, is eaten.
  • The Dragon: The Priestess.
  • Either/Or Title: Most of the chapter titles.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: All new initiates into the Order of the Owl are given one, as a way of teaching them humility. Yin Bei's is "Snowball".
  • Faux Affably Evil: Yang Chao can seem pretty friendly around friend and foe alike, but getting in his way will quickly bring out the not-so-friendly side.
  • Fluffy Tamer: Bei herself becomes one when she manages to tame a sea serpent of all things. She names it Jade.
  • Hunter of Monsters: Any member of the Order of the Owl. It's even an official rank. But some of the Owls, particularly Swift Hare, Lang, Little Miss, and even Yin Bei herself, fit the bill more than others. Yin Bei and Swift Hare could also be considered The Witch Hunter, as Yin Bei has dedicated her life to wiping out the Seekers of Eldritch Truth, while Swift Hare did the same thing to the Birds of Prey.
  • Laughably Evil: Yang Chao is prone to cracking jokes and playing around with his victims. His blatantly out-of-place accent is hilarious in itself.
  • Little Miss Badass: Yin Bei
  • Manipulative Bastard: Yang Chao is excellent at pulling everyone's strings to get them to bend to his will.
  • Mask of Sanity: All of the Birds of Prey and Chosen.
  • Meaningful Name: Yin Bei and Yang Chao.
  • Murder, Inc.: The Order of the Owls.
  • Posthumous Character: Master Swift Hare is killed in the first chapter, but continues to play a vital role regardless.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: The Great Ones serve as an inter-dimensional example. A more straight example is the Watcher, whose prison Rooster has to break in to just to see him.
  • Secret Test of Character: Bei's test to join the Order of the Owl, which forces her to choose between saving her father or her own younger self. Ultimately, she chooses to keep the past as is, but it was only a test of her resolve as she is told it would have changed nothing anyway.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Taken quite literally with Yin Bei and Yang Chao.
  • Snark Knight: Since Faceless sees the imperfect proportions of everyone around him, he can't help but be an extreme perfectionist and snark up a storm. He sawed off his own antlers just to make himself more symmetrical.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: Lang, with everyone but Bing.
  • The Syndicate: The Black Hoods serve as a (mostly) good-aligned version.
  • Waif-Fu: Yin Bei, the Priestess, and Little Miss all fit this trope.
  • Wisdom from the Gutter: Despite his constant drunkenness, Bao Zhi is a skilled soldier and battle leader.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: The Watcher finds out just how much immortality can suck when he ends up reduced to, as Yang Chao puts it, "a sentient lump of charcoal."
  • Yandere: The Priestess, for Yang Chao.
