''In the Eye of the Beholder'' is a ''Franchise/{{Persona}}'' fanfic that, unlike the games, takes place in the Western world, in particular the United States. [=HopeGale=], the author, was inspired by learning about the infamous English localization of the original ''VideoGame/{{Persona 1}}'' for the UsefulNotes/PlayStation, which changed the setting to the United States among other differences, and decided to try writing a ''Persona'' fic taking place in the United States, but built from the ground up to take advantage of the different setting compared to Japan.

* ForWantOfANail: [[spoiler:Tropical Storm Grace, a relatively minor storm in our world that didn't go past Puerto Rico, became a Category 5 Hurricane that made landfall in Corpus Christi and wiped out [[KillEmAll almost everyone]] in ''The Fragile Veil'' save for Lloyd and Yolanda.]]

* VendorTrash: The Shadows leave behind quartz bits upon defeat that Lydia sells in the Velvet Room for large amounts of cash to share amongst the group, which they spend on things including but not limited to clothing enchantments for everyone from the Velvet Room (Lydia), paying for art supplies (Jacob), and spending hundreds on convention merch (Damien and Allie). It's even lampshaded that their parents don't really ask where all their extra disposable income is coming from, though Lydia does insist that they refrain from spending too much at once in the real world lest people get suspicious.

* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Lydia and Blair (an acquaintance met in the [=FantasyFlare=] convention) discuss this when the former wanted to ask about the latter's natural red eyes. They reference colors of other Franchise/{{Persona}} characters like navy blue (Naoto), silver (Yu), teal (Fuuka), and salmon pink.

* ContinuityNod: [[spoiler:Rissa's father mentions that it was the [[VideoGame/{{Persona1}} Nanjo Group]] who helped him and Yolanda relocate to Quartz following the events of ''The Fragile Veil''.]]

** From a video game perspective, the QIB vs. Idol Amelia is supposed to be this, with the author stating she ''could'' be beatable with lots of grinding or a NewGamePlus.

* {{Interquel}}: The story takes place between ''Persona 4'' and ''5''.

* SadisticChoice: When Jacob ends up pulled into the valley, the QIB ends up having to choose between two dungeons; the museum [[spoiler:(Jacob)]], or the cave of another victim [[spoiler:(Rory)]] that sprouted at the same time. After a lengthy debate, they decide to choose the former, partly because a cavern collapse could trap them, and because F.Z. still has memories of being BuriedAlive by her Idol. [[spoiler:Sycophanta ends up recruiting the one they didn't choose, and likely helped convince Rory to accept his Idol in the first place]].

* SummonToHand: While trapped in a cocoon made by Idol Nori, having been "disarmed" of her mirror earlier, Ophelia tells Lydia she can summon it to her the same way she does a Persona. Presumably, all "quartz valley" Persona-users can do this.

* OneHundredPercentCompletion: Defied in regards to Social Links; the author explicitly stated there will be some that won't be completed and others that ''won't even be started''; he didn't want Lydia to become a borderline [[TheAce Ace]] like [[{{VideoGame/Persona3}} Minato]] and [[{{VideoGame/Persona4}} Yu]].

* GasLeakCoverUp: The [[VideoGame/Persona1 Nanjo Group]] ended up covering up the supernatural portions of [[spoiler:the Corpus Incident and gave Rissa's parents the money to relocate to Quartz.]]
* GenderFlip: Unlike [[VideoGame/{{Persona3}} Kotone Shiomi for Makoto Yuki]], Alexander isn't this for Lydia. For one, while Lydia's family isn't religious, Alexander's do attend church, though seemingly out of obligation rather than actual faith.

* UnexpectedGameplayChange: If the fic was a video game, the battle against Nathan's Idol would be this; rather than a straight up battle like with Allie's and Damien's Idols, the QIB and Nathan are forced to play a football game, with the girls stuck on the sidelines and Damien in the field with Nathan and his rampaging Idol.

* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: Quartz, TX is said to be located somewhere between Houston and Galveston, with part of the QIB visiting Houston at one point to attend a con. It's later specified that Quartz is approximately where League City, TX is in the real world, which is equidistant between Houston and Galveston.

** Sometime after Jacob's rescue by the QIB and Rory's recruitment to Sycophanta, ''[[Film/TheFastAndTheFurious Raging Motors Heptagonis]]'' is mentioned and includes [[ChuckCunninghamSyndrome an actor who died mid-production]] after which the film became a memorial for him.
* YearInsideHourOutside: Time appears to pass more quickly within the mirror world than outside it. For instance, after defeating Damien's Idol and returning to the real world, the QIB finds that only 15 minutes passed outside since they entered, despite it feeling like at least an hour for them inside. It is a bit inconsistent, ranging from less than 2 to more then 3 times as long.

** Idols, which are a type of Shadow formed from a person's distorted view of who they wish they could be. Contary to the Shadow Selves encountered in ''VideoGame/Persona4'', accepting them is exactly what they want (akin to how things went for Kanamin Kitchen in ''VideoGame/Persona4DancingAllNight''). Instead, they need to be rejected, defeated, and convinced of the rightness of the person's chosen path in life.

** Sometime after Jacob's rescue by the QIB and Rory's recruitment to Sycophanta, ''[[Film/TheFastAndTheFurious Raging Motors Heptagonis]]'' is mentioned and includes [[CharacterExistenceFailure an actor who died mid-production]] after which the film became a memorial for him.
