Fanfic / Azumanga und Panzer

Go To

Azumanga und Panzer is a Girls und Panzer and Azumanga Daioh crossover by technomad.

The fic begins with a tsunami that destroys "Azu High" and the surrounding town. Left homeless and without a school, the girls and their teachers join Oarai Academy, which recently won the tankery tournament. Some of the girls join its tankery team, and fight alongside Oarai against old rivals and new foes.

The fic can be found here.

Azumanga und Panzer examples of:

  • Adaptational Intelligence: In canon, Sakaki's considerably smarter than most people would expect, but while she's much smarter than "the three knuckleheads," she isn't quite up to Yomi or Chiyo's level. In here, she's considered the smartest of the Azu girls (with the possible exception of Chiyo, who can't participate), and for this reason, gets chosen as commander.
  • Adaptation Personality Change:
    • Miho, in addition to being stronger willed than in canon, is also a bit more bitter when it comes to her mother. By comparison, in canon, she respects her mother, and doesn't seem to have any hard feelings toward her, even if Miho's a bit intimidated by Shiho.
    • In canon, Ami is highly laid back and stops appearing as Oarai's teacher halfway through the anime. In this fic, Ami is a highly strict Stern Teacher who insists that her students keep their grades up in addition to performing well in tankery.
  • Badass Boast: Miho declares that she is not a follower of the Nishizumi school, but she's still a Nishizumi, and shouldn't be underestimated.
  • Crack Defeat: Before the final round of the tournament, Saunders eliminates Kuromorimine in a somewhat unexpected result.
  • Crossover Relatives: Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh' and Nonna from Girls und Panzer'' are cousins, an idea likely derived from their similar appearances as tall girls with long, dark hair.
  • Darker and Edgier: Very much so in the beginning, given the natural disaster that destroys the town. Even after that fades, the fic is still a minor case of this, being somewhat more serious than most of Girls und Panzer and Saki.
  • Downer Beginning: The Azumanga Daioh girls' hometown is destroyed by a tsunami, and many people, including Yukari-sensei's parents, are killed. Oddly enough, though, this is never mentioned again after the first chapter.
  • Education Mama: Shiho is mentioned to be as strict about grades as she is about tankery.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
  • Hate Sink: Within the space of a few minutes, Maria Tanaka has gotten on all her opponents' bad sides with her arrogance and general unpleasantness, and the chances of her being at all sympathetic are quite slim.
  • The Infiltration: Chiyo manages to do this to Anzio. She tries this again with their last opponent, Saunders College High, but is unable to get in due to not being a resident.
  • Jumped at the Call: None of the girls hesitate to join the tankery team, and all of them except Chiyo find their place on it.
  • Nobody Poops: Averted. The fact that Piyotan and Nekonyaa have a Potty Emergency in Chapter 6, during the match with Anzio puts them in prime position to attack the flag tank. In a later scene, Mako decides to Take Five for a toilet break.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Yomi says "Holy Buddha, look at these prices," while looking at tanks.
  • One-Steve Limit: There's Yukari Akiyama and Yukari Tanizaki. Additionally, Nonna's real name is Noriko, the same as Noriko Isobe from Duck Team.
  • Out-of-Character Moment:
    • Miho comes off as significantly more headstrong than in canon. There are moments here and there, but the standout is when she boasts that she's still a Nishizumi and shouldn't be underestimated, something that's highly uncharacteristic of someone who tends to be self-deprecating.
    • "(Saki) Maruyama shouted triumphantly" isn't quite an example in and of itself- the fact that no one in Rabbit Team finds this at all unusual is.note
    • Nonna becomes infuriated over Maria Tanaka's boasting and taunting, relishing the prospect of making her eat crow in a way that would be more characteristic of Katyusha. This is not only not characteristic of Nonna, but the circumstances aren't extreme enough to provoke a Not So Stoic reaction.
  • Refused by the Call: Chiyo is unable to participate because of a rule that says tankery can't be done by those under 15.
  • Related in the Adaptation:
    • Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh' and Nonna from Girls und Panzer'' are cousins, an idea likely derived from their similar appearances as tall girls with long, dark hair.
    • Implied with Kagura and Minamo "Nyamo". Kurosawa. The former's full name is Kagura Kurosawa, which means that she might be related to Nyamo.
  • Reverse Cerebus Syndrome: The fic begins with a tsunami that destroys a town and kills many people, but after the first chapter, gives way to a relatively standard Tournament Arc.
  • Smug Snake: Maria Tanaka is incredibly arrogant and believes that Japan is nothing compared to South America. How much she is able to back up this attitude has yet to be determined, but she certainly has the haughtiness and unlikeability associated with this trope.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The Azumanga girls take up the majority of the plot and win most of the battles, to the point at which the author had to give credit for the victory against Anzio to Anteater, of all teams to counterbalance this.
  • Stern Teacher: Ami Chouno. She demands that all her students pass with high marks, but also offers help to anyone who's having trouble.
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: Azusa, after taking out one of Pravda's tanks in payback for Rabbit Team's elimination in the semifinals.
    Azusa: Payback's a bitch, bitches!
  • Throw the Dog a Bone:
    • After being barred from participating in tankery matches, Chiyo is offered a post as "brains" of the team.
    • With Oarai's help, Sakaki gets to bond with a cat.
    • Anteater Team manages to win the match with Anzio, albeit partly due to luck.
  • Tournament Arc: Two thus far. There's an "intermural" Tankery tournament, and that leads in to the Olympics.
