Endless Conflict: Chapter Zero
Chapter Zero: It Was Just A Sunny Day

It was a warm summer day in year 2455 in the city of San Francisco. The sun was out, traffic moving through the streets, when young Mathias Watkins and his sister Samantha traveled along the city streets. They had the appearance of a fairly odd sibling couple. Mat was brown haired and brown eyed and was built skinny for a 7 year old whereas his sister had blond hair, blue eyes and built very much like a 5 year old. The two however were inseparable despite having to live on the streets. Walking the streets by themselves was all they knew as far as they remembered what with no parents to call their own. They scraped by from the kindness of total strangers, jumping from shelter to shelter and doing whatever they could just to survive until the next day. But today had been different, something felt different, as if their luck was about to change.

“Mat! Wait up!” cried out Samantha, “How much longer will we be going?”

“Not much longer Sammy…” Mat replied.

“Not much longer?” sounded a voice down the street. “Really now? I thought I told you kids to stay off my turf! This is my hood!”
\\“Easy Eddy that’s a lie and you know it!” shouted Mat.

Easy Eddy came forward towards Mat slowly. “Was a lie shrimp! We recently expanded out. Since this is the third time you’ve come by, I gotta tell ya we gotta break something.”

Several of his "friends" showing up behind him. The group walked forwards, each with a mean look on their faces that would normally make people nervous, intent on rectifying the transgression that had occurred.

“Sam, get behind me and stay away from them” Mat whispered to Sam.

“Mike, show him how we do things on the streets.” Eddy told.

One of them stepped forward, Mad Mike as he was known ran up to Mat. Raising his fist to drop onto young Mat he swung with the force to break glass and stopped. Grabbing down he realized that Mat had punched him, right between the legs. Stumbling back a few steps, he tried again. This time Mat kicked him in the shin and grew angrier. Sporadic laughter began popping up amongst Eddy and his gang at the antics at the thought of a mere kid kicking Mike’s ass. Mike swung a right hook at Mat, but only succeeded in missing the boy who countered with a punch to the gut. It didn’t hurt him much at all but it was becoming apparent that Mat had learned to hold his own against people much bigger than him. A second thug named Gaston came forward and took a swing at Mathias only realizing that like Mike, he dodged. But Mat’s luck would not hold out. Mike threw another punch but this time it connected. It knocked Mat over and he then proceeded to kick him while he was down. Gaston grabbed Mat by the shirt and lifted him off the ground. Holding him up for Mad Mike to go to town, Mat was struck again and again by the one he had previously been dodging. Battered, bloodied and dizzy he was thrown onto the sidewalk. As Gaston and Mike were standing over, Mat turned to Samantha now petrified with fright.

“Run! Get out of here Sam!”

Samantha too scared to know what to do, just wanted to cry but did as Mat asked. Turning around and running away from the fight she only got short distance away when she was stopped by a man dressed in traditional Japanese robes.

“Is that your brother over there?” the man asked.

Sam merely nodded yes sensing the man was not your typical stranger. “Then stay here, he will not be hurt anymore.”

The man walked over to the fight clearly having watched the struggle as it unfolded. No sooner had he taken a few steps then Eddy calling him out. “Hey pops! You mind? We got business were taking care of!”

“Oh so this is ‘business’ eh? Beating a mere child for walking is ‘business’?” The man said in a serious tone.

“What’s it to ya? Ya some kind of wannabe Samaritan?” Eddy replied sarcastically.

“My name is Matsui Yamanaka, Master Matsui Yamanaka and this act here is a transgression upon this boy's honor. You will immediately cease your violence towards him!”

“And if we refuse?” Eddy replied.

Drawing a wooden sword known as a bokken from a sheath on his back, Matsui held it out towards the gang members.

“I ask you to cease one more time, or you will pay dearly for what has happened today” Matsui said out. Barely containing their own laughter, the gangsters immediately wondered if he was serious.

“What’s that? Some kind of toy?” Gaston called out and immediately charged Matsui.

Matsui taking a step back readied his bokken and swept to the side as Gaston passed. A look on confusion pervaded Gaston’s face as a sudden smack from the wooden blade of Matsui’s sword hit him on the back of the head. Gaston merely fell over to the concrete where he now lay unconscious. Stunned, the other members of Eddy’s gang immediately readied themselves to fight.

“I told you, run now and maybe you can save your own honor” Matsui asked wryly.
The gang members ran full force towards him with intent on showing Matsui who was boss but the 46 year old merely met them head on. The first member took a blow to the head and fell to the street. Another was knocked into the nearby fence. Mad Mike was knocked over to the nearby trashcans and Eddy got smacked to the ground.

“How the…?“ Eddy asked confused.

“Simple, the body is merely the instrument of the mind. Discipline your mind and body and you can take on anyone. You lack such discipline and as such you find yourself here.” Matsui replied.

“Leave now and never seek to harm that boy again” Matsui put away his bokken and began to turn towards Mat. Eddy furious at the thought of a guy with a wooden sword beating him and four of his boys while seemingly not trying, reached into his shirt and drew a pistol. No sooner had he done this had Matsui drawn his spare katana out and sliced the pistol in two. Now shocked that a real bladed sword had become present Eddy dropped the broken pistol handle and ran away. Mike and two others picked themselves up and ran away with Eddy. Mat struggling to stay awake got a glimpse at the man who came by.

“They shall harm you no more, young one” Matsui said softly to Mat.

Signaling to Samantha to come over, he started picking the battered kid up. Looking by to see that Samantha was safe, he took one blink and blacked out.
