* TheTroublemaker:
** Eddy is the biggest troublemaker on the cast. He drives the plot of most episodes through his attempts to scam the other kids out of their money, which usually results in pain and humiliation for him, the other Eds, or the kids. When he's not scamming, Eddy will often play pranks on others to amuse himself; his EstablishingCharacterMoment in the pilot is driving Edd crazy by playing Ding Dong Ditch.
** Ed is the other big troublemaker, often spoiling Eddy's schemes through his clumsiness, overeagerness, and overactive imagination. For example, in "The Day the Ed Stood Still", giving him a monster costume made Ed think he ''is'' a monster, and so he procedes to wreak havoc in the Cul de Sac and kidnap the kids as he acts out a monster movie plot.
** The Kanker Sisters, {{Distaff Counterpart}}s to the Eds, are often going after their "boyfriends" to give them unsolicited kisses (in one episode, they trap them in an abandoned house to make them their "husbands"), but they are not above harassing the rest of the Cul de Sac.
** JerkJock Kevin usually keeps to himself, but will often go after the Eds (or "dorks", as he often calls them) as payback for one of their scams. In "Ed, Ed and Away", he's the one responsible for sending the Eds on a wild goose chase after a balloon, just to watch them fall over themselves trying to catch it.
** CloudCuckoolander Jonny 2X4 is a troublemaker of the unwitting variety, his eccentric antics often driving the other kids crazy. One episode has Eddy encourage Jonny to annoy others so he can charge them to get rid of Jonny.

** Jimmy. Throughout the first season, his voice is deeper, and sounds rather muffled (as if he's speaking through a cup or something) sounding quite similar to Chao voices found in the original UsefulNotes/SegaDreamcast release of ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''. Towards the end of the season, his voice becomes much higher and squeakier, and the muffled quality completely disappears by the middle of the second season. By the time "If It Smells Like an Ed" had aired, and for the rest of the series, his voice slowly, yet progressively, becomes deeper again, though not muffled and still squeaky to the point he sounds like a higher pitched version of Creator/BobBergen's portrayal of WesternAnimation/PorkyPig.

** While the Eds [[TheChewToy typically bear the brunt of it]], no one in the cast is safe from physical punishment. The Kanker sisters stand out for this trope, particularly May.

* ShoutOut:
** At one point Edd uses the pseudonym "[[Film/TheBigLebowski Walter Sobchak]]" to fool the Kankers.
** In "The Day The Ed Stood Still", Ed turns into a monster and plasters all of the cul-de-sac kids onto the wall with chewed Chunky Puffs, a clear reference to ''Film/{{Alien}}''.
-->'''Edd''': [[LampshadeHanging Ed must be acting out of a science fiction movie he might have seen!]]
** The letters "AKA" are found somewhere in every episode, usually on some sign or in a Blink-And-You'll-Miss-It moment.
** The show has referenced Film/TheWizardOfOz many times. Once in ''See No Ed,'' when Jimmy shouts "Follow the Yellow Brick Road!" when the kids follow a trail of bananas, another time, as Kevin and Eddy were throwing each other to one of Eddy's scams, and the last one in the movie.
** And in the same scene:
-->'''Ed:''' The hills are alive Eddy!\\
'''Eddy:''' Yeah, with [[Theatre/TheSoundOfMusic the sounds of an idiot]].
** In another episode:
-->'''Rolf:''' (After learning Edd's middle name) Marion the Hungarian?\\
'''Kevin and Jonny:''' ''No!'' [[Theatre/TheMusicMan Marion the Librarian!]]
** Another one to Airplane!
-->'''*while the other boys are thinking about Nazz*'''\\
'''Ed:''' Hello? Echo! ''My name is Ed!''
** Ed pulls a reference in the episode "For Your Ed Only".
-->'''Ed:''' I'm a [[Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration Borg]].
** Eddy makes one to ''WesternAnimation/TheJetsons'' in "Fa-La-La-La-Ed".
-->'''Eddy''': ''[Riding a rotating mirror]'' Jane, stop this crazy thing!
** In "Avast Ye Eds", when Jonny tears apart the Kankers sail, Jimmy remarks "Just like Creator/ErrolFlynn!"
** In "Twist of an Ed", where Lee harasses him in the shower, you can see Eddy's hand slide down the fogged glass, which could be a reference to ''Film/{{Titanic 1997}}''.
** In ''Boom Boom Out Goes The Ed'', the mole mutants Ed was talking about were similar to that of Film/{{CHUD}}
** In ''Big Picture Show'' when Eddy mentions that his brother was a fan of the television show ''Matlock''.
** In "Rent-a-Ed", Ed says "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da!" This is a reference to the Beatles song of the same name.
** A few more Beatles references pop up in "Once Upon an Ed" when Jonny wants to hear a bedtime story with "octopuses' gardens, silver hammers, and Mr. Kite."

* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: The city/town that the show takes place in is called Peach Creek, and they're in the United States, but that's about as specific as it gets regarding its actual geographic location. At the very least, it appears to be somewhere in the continental United States[[note]]The geography and building style reflects typical architecture found in North America, and the Eds' comments in "Know It All Ed" imply they're not in Canada, or at the very least do not consider themselves Canadian[[/note]], in a location where moderately hot summers and snowy winters are common. The ''Big Picture Show'' sheds a little more light, but likewise refuses to confirm the location; between the series and the movie, Peach Creek is shown to be a moderately large-sized city, complete with a suburban zone (including the Cul de Sac, natch), a commercial district, and a large downtown/metro area with several interstate highways which pass through it. Long shots show a flat horizon and no mountainous areas to speak of, implying the American Midwest, but the movie gives a few details that muddy it up, such as the presence of a gator and crawdad farm, a coastal theme park, and a swamp, all three of which are not in Peach Creek but are still reachable by foot within a few days at most.
