Anthony Robert Kushner (born July 16, 1956 in New York City) is an American playwright and screenwriter best known for writing the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America and its subsequent miniseries adaptation, as well as various other plays and screen works.
Born in Manhattan, Kushner's family moved to Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he spent most of his childhood, becoming active in local politics as a high schooler. He moved back to New York to attend Columbia University, and later began writing and directing plays during graduate school.
Kushner was given the National Medal of Arts by Barack Obama in 2013. He has been married to film critic and scholar Mark Harris since 2008.
