Thomas Jeffrey "Tom" Hanks (born 1956) worked in television (Bosom Buddies) and family-friendly comedies such as Splash and Big before achieving success as a dramatic actor portraying several notable roles, including Andrew Beckett in Philadelphia, the title role in Forrest Gump, Commander James A. Lovell in Apollo 13, Captain John H. Miller in Saving Private Ryan, Michael Sullivan in Road to Perdition, Sheriff Woody in Pixar's Toy Story, and Chuck Noland in Cast Away, as well as helping to produce Band Of Brothers and The Pacific. He is currently playing Walt Disney in Disney's Saving Mr. Banks

He also played Robert Langdon in The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. Has hosted Saturday Night Live eight times (half as many times as Alec Baldwin, who as of September 2011, is SNL's most frequent host), and has made cameos on the show (including on the last episode of season 34 in which he played a moronic version of himself on "Celebrity Jeopardy", the Bruno Mars episode from season 38 as a murderous carnival ride robot, and Justin Timberlake's fifth time hosting, where he is one of many members of the Five-Timers' Club). Runs his own studio called Playtone, named after the music label in his self-produced That Thing You Do!.

This man named the trivia item Tom Hanks Syndrome for a reason.
