Jimmy Savile (31 October 1926 – 29 October 2011) was an English media personality whose career began as a deejay at dance halls in his native Leeds. He joined Creator/TheBBC in 1964, regularly presenting shows between the 1970s and 1990s, through which he became known for his eccentricities. The shows also acted as a forum for philanthropic work for various hospitals that led to him receiving many honours that have all been posthumously rescinded.

His death on 29th October 2011 led to a two-hour tribute programme that aired on the BBC. A year later, Creator/{{ITV}} broadcast a documentary about Savile that triggered a police investigation into the biggest sexual abuse scandal in British history.

'''Jimmy Savile''' (31 October 1926 – 29 October 2011) was an English media personality who got his start working as a deejay at dance halls in his native Leeds. He joined TheBBC in 1964 and became a presenter of the variety music programme ''Series/TopOfThePops'', hosting regularly until the early 80's, and making occasional guest appearances (such as the last weekly edition in 2006). Savile hosted two other shows from the 70's to the 90's, first ''Clunk Click'', a Saturday night chat show and then ''Jim'll Fix It'', in which he fulfilled wishes for children in need. Through these shows, he became noted for his eccentricities. Savile was a tall, strong man with long white hair who always wore jogging suits and kept in shape with sports. (Despite his sporting image, he was a notorious cigar smoker.) He also enjoyed clowning around in front of people, making silly faces or joking about.

''Jim'll Fix It'' contributed to Savile's image as a philanthropist. He was instrumental in raising funds for several hospitals, including Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury and Leeds General Infirmary and Broadmoor Hospital in Berkshire. For his efforts, he enjoyed close links with Britain's social and political establishment, and received numerous honours including a knighthood and an OBE. All this gave Savile the reputation of a flamboyant CloudCuckooLander with a heart of gold, who easily won the people over with charm and amusement and could withstand doing and saying cringingly outrageous things. His death on 29 October 2011 was initially met with an outpouring of national grief. The BBC aired a two hour tribute programme dedicated to his life and accomplishments.

Then, a year after Savile's death, Creator/{{ITV}} broadcast a documentary featuring five women who claimed to have been molested by Savile when they were children. The documentary led to a cascade of accusations that Savile sexually abused hundreds of children over his forty year career, using his philanthropic endeavours to gain access to more victims and his celebrity clout to avoid investigation. Eventually, over 480 allegations were made against Savile, making him [[DepravedKidsShowHost the most prolific sex offender in British history]]. News of Savile's secret depravity forced institutions like the BBC to the NHS to examine how they failed to deal with accusations during and after his lifetime, and led to the launch of Operation Yewtree, a national police investigation into other celebrity paedophiles.

In light of the nature and scope of the scandal, all awards bestowed upon him that did not expire with his death, have since been rescinded by the organisations which had awarded them.

He joined the BBC in 1964 and became a presenter of the variety music programme ''Series/TopOfThePops'', hosting regularly until the early 80's, and making occasional guest appearances (such as the last weekly edition in 2006). Savile hosted two other shows from the 70's to the 90's, first ''Clunk, Click'', a Saturday night chat show and then ''Jim'll Fix It'', in which he fulfilled wishes for children in need. Through these shows, he became noted for his eccentricities. Savile was a tall, strong man with long white hair who always wore jogging suits and kept in shape with sports. (Despite his sporting image, he was a notorious cigar smoker.) Savile also enjoyed clowning around in front of people, making silly faces or joking about.
