Heartland, so their status is up in the air. Subverted in Episode 100. When Yuya asks a Heartland woman about the Resistance, she replies that most of them were already wiped out by Academia.
* YourTerroristsAreOurFreedomFighters: To fight back against Academia, the Resistance had to battle them the same way they do and it does work. However, Yuto has to keep Kurosaki in check, as he lets his personal feelings take their actions too far at times, especially in the Standard Dimension that doesn't know of the war.

A strange masked man investigating LDS, he intervenes in a duel between Yuzu and Sawatari. For mysterious reasons, he shares the same face as Yuya and he has some connection to Yuzu, who resembles a friend of his named Ruri.

Yuto used to live in Heartland, a peaceful city that was invaded by Academia, turning it into a war zone. Together with his friends, he's a member of Resistance, a rebel group that fends off Academia soldiers. At some point, when Yuri kidnapped Ruri, Yuto encountered Yugo, who was looking for the kidnapped Rin; both of them mistake each other for the kidnapper and dueled each other until Yugo disappeared. After learning that Reiji Akaba is the Professor's son, Yuto followed his friend Kurosaki travel to Standard, where Yuto meets Yuzu.

* TheBusCameBack: He returns to being a major character in the Xyz Dimension arc after the Synchro Dimension arc [[DemotedToExtra demoted him to extra.]] The fifth opening makes note of this with by emphasizing Yuto's overbearing presence.
* CastingAShadow: His "Phantom Knights" archetype is primarily DARK in nature.
* CollaredByFashion: A small one that brings Yugi's to mind.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: He was once a resident of Heartland, a sprawling city from the Xyz Dimension that was a once-fun and peaceful realm until it was brought to ruin by the efforts of the Fusion Dimension.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Unlike his friend Kurosaki, Yuto doesn't assault people and he prefers to end conflicts peacefully if possible.
* {{Determinator}}: He makes a comment in Episode 35 that echoes Kurosaki's words of getting up and fighting despite being knocked down.
* EvilCounterpart: Subverted. At his first appearance he looked like one, but as the series went on he was quickly revealed to be very noble.
* {{Expy}}: Yuto seems to be one for [[Manga/YuGiOh Atem]]. Both have traumatic past, were first introduced as enigmatic individuals but gradually got warmer and both are spiritually bound to the main character and empower him in some way.
* FamousLastWords: While not "dead", [[SharingABody per se,]] his final line before merging with Yuya was "Bring smiles with your Duels". This subsequently became Yuya's personal ArcWords for the duration of the current TournamentArc, and was referred back to with enough repetition that both the line, and by extension "egao"[[note]]Japanese for "smile"[[/note]], underwent MemeticMutation among the fandom.
* FirstNameBasis: He's currently the only character who refers to Kurosaki by his first name, strengthening the fact they are best friends. It's later revealed that everyone from Heartland seems to call him by his first name.
* {{Foil}}: To Yuya, even down to their color palettes. While Yuya loves to entertain people and he's all smiles, Yuto never fools around and he's all serious. But both care for Yuzu. It's later shown that they are NotSoDifferent, as Yuya believes that duels are meant to bring people their smiles, and Yuto agrees with him in his depth of his heart and he doesn't want to hurt people anymore with dueling.
** Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon is one to Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon. Having their summoning method as the third word in their name, the same attack and defense points. But having mirrored poses, Dark Rebellion's card background is a dark starry sky while Odd-Eyes' is a bright starry sky.
* FusionDance: The first few times when Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide shows up, the audience can see both him and Yuto "combining".
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: His SuperpoweredEvilSide has them.
* GoOutWithASmile: He smiles as his body fades away, although his soul remains with Yuya.
* GogglesDoNothing: Wore goggles with his facemask during his first appearance. Subverted, as they did protect his eyes from flying debris when he shielded Yuzu, but the lens broke. He abandons the goggles by the time of his next appearance.
* IAmLegion: Whenever Yuto summons his ace dragon and/or is possessed by his SuperpoweredEvilSide, he and any of his counterparts nearby also undergo Synchronization. The result is that both Yuto and his "twin" start speaking in unison and exude some sort of sinister dark power. [[spoiler:This comes to a near breaking point in Episode 92, where Yuya, Yuto, Yugo and Yuri have all of their signature dragons on the field and all are screaming "WE WILL BECOME ONE!!!"]]
* IdenticalStranger: To Yuya, Yugo, and Yuri.
* ImDyingPleaseTakeMyMacGuffin: Gives Yuya his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, which is somehow plot-related, to Yuya before vanishing. It's unclear just how permanent his "death" is at the moment.
* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: His Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon is his ace, despite not fitting with his Phantom Knight deck.
* {{Irony}}: Yuto comes from a world inspired by ''Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL'', often considered to be one of the more lighthearted and goofiest series of ''Yu-Gi-Oh!'', but he is easily the most serious and angsty of the Yuyas.
* KnightOfCerebus: His actions kicked off a best-of-three competition between LDS and You Show, with the latter at risk of being overtaken. He also hinted the existence of a GreaterScopeVillain, Academia.
* LaResistance: Alongside Kurosaki and his other comrades, he fights against Academia.
* LethalJokeCharacter: No, seriously. In his home dimension, his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon would have been little more than a beatstick since its effect in the anime can only be used on a level 5 or higher monster. Problem is that since this is the Xyz Dimension, his opponent would be using an Xyz monster and Xyz monsters don't have levels, making Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon's effect useless. Against the Fusion Dimension, however, it's a different story.
* MadeOfIron: Was thrown into a real wall with enough force to crack and leave a hole, and he just gets up and continues dueling like nothing had happened.
* MrExposition: Acts as one to Yuya in regards to Heartland's past.
* MulticoloredHair: His hair is both purple and black.
* MindScrew: A walking one for Yuzu for a while.
* MrExposition: He explains the Four Dimensions to Yuya.
* MysteriousProtector: To Yuzu. Sawatari even called him "Knight-kun" for coming out of nowhere to save the princess.
* NiceGuy: He's actually very kindhearted, and isn't nearly as violent as Kurosaki is. In fact, similar to Yuya, he hates hurting people and doesn't like seeing others suffering.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: Just like Kurosaki, he never responds to any trash talk and calmly plays his turn. He wasn't fazed at all, meeting Yuya, who is said to look just like him. However, he was going to leave Sora alone since he was injured, until he provoked him. He's also a lot more merciful, trying not to hurt his opponent, and stops the duel with Yuya once Sora is taken away.
* NotQuiteDead: After disappearing into the light after his duel with Yugo, he merges with Yuya, transferring his soul and Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon to him. While his physical body is gone, he's still around, and appears from time to time when Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide emerges or simply when Yuto appears as a SpiritAdvisor.
* NotSoDifferent:
** To Yuya, Episode 35 shows this the best. Yuto prepares his Duel Disk just like Yuya does. Also Yuya and Yuto have the same motivation, protecting their friends, something Yuto seems to note.
** Subconsciously, and as part of his and Yuya's SuperpoweredEvilSide, Yuto becomes similar to his best friend Kurosaki, hating the Fusion dimension and its inhabitants for what they did to his home dimension and wanting nothing more but their total destruction, although in this case, it's taken UpToEleven.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: A meta example. Nobody InUniverse knew his name (some don't even know he exists). His nickname, Dark Duelist, was given by the creators to the public. His true name is revealed in Episode 21.
* OutOfFocus: Spends his time sleeping inside Yuya for the majority of the Synchro arc.
* OverTheShoulderCarry: Grabs Kurosaki this way after knocking him out in Episode 21.
* PerpetualFrowner: In contrast with Yuya's PerpetualSmiler. Subverted, in that he later reveals that he shares Yuya's idealism and tells Yuya to bring smiles with Duels.
* PutOnABus: After he is absorbed by Yuya, Yuto's spirit shows up only a couple of times later on. After Yuya, Gongenzaka, Sawatari, and Kurosaki arrive in Heartland, Yuto seems to show up more often.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: He told off Sawatari for his lack of determination in their duel.
* ReluctantWarrior: He only dueled to protect Yuzu and gather some information about LDS from Sawatari. After getting what he wanted, he was willing to step out of the duel, but Sawatari made him give the final blow. He also calls Sawatari out for not having the dueling experience gained by suffering, implying he has a dark past that has made him cynical. His line to Yuzu before he duels Sawatari in her stead, "I don't want you to get hurt again", supports this. Furthermore, his reluctance during his duels with Sora and Yugo demonstrate this further, as well as his parting words.
** Yuto's dueling style reflects his passive nature; he uses trap cards that negates the opponent's attacks and effects, thus bringing the conflict to a non-violent end. Also, with the exception of Yugo, Yuto always offers his opponents the opportunity to either surrender or stop the duel entirely; in all three of his on-screen duels, only Yuya takes him up on his offer.
* TheRival: Yugo's. They loathe each other due to mistaking each other for Yuri, who took away each other's precious person.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Combined with BadassCape. Currently, he's wearing the scarf on his right arm.
* SharingABody: Yuto's soul/body is inside Yuya and can at times influence or share thoughts with his counterpart. This allows Yuya access to Yuto's Dimensional Dragon.
* ShellShockedVeteran: Just like Kurosaki, though Yuto appears to be taking it better.
* ShipTease: Yuto seems to care quite a bit about Ruri. His main goal is to find and free her. To the point the only reason Yuto was protecting Yuzu at first was because he thought she was Ruri.
* ShockAndAwe: Strangely enough, Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon's modus operandi.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The VersusCharacterSplash spells his name as "Ute". An official website gives us "Yute".
* SpiritAdvisor: The first few times when Yuya is possessed by his SuperpoweredEvilSide, we see Yuto's spirit emerging with Yuya. Yuto's spirit shows up a couple of times later on during the Synchro saga but only to show viewers that he's still with Yuya and only partially influences Yuya's decisions with his memories of Heartland's invasion. Yuto fully embraces this role in the Xyz Dimension arc, talking and advising Yuya willingly, similarly to Atem and Astral.
* SplitPersonality: Just like Yuya, though his makes him more destructive, maybe even reaching OmnicidalManiac.
* StalkerWithACrush: While the "crush" part is debatable, we do see him following Yuzu around from a distance in Episode 15. She may be a ReplacementGoldfish for Ruri, Kurosaki's little sister. Justified, he thought Yuzu was Ruri as they're {{Identical Stranger}}s and the last time he saw her, she was kidnapped.
* TheStoic: Yuto's default personality. Whether he used to be happier and more lively before Academia invaded his dimension remains to be seen.
** NotSoStoic: However, Yuto does carry regret and anger over what happened to his dimension deep down and when the right buttons are pushed, he can lose his temper. His SuperpoweredEvilSide does away with his stoic nature entirely.
* SuperSpeed: He showed incredibly high speed in Episode 35.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: Similar to Yuya and Yugo, Yuto loses himself to a darker side when his SuperpoweredEvilSide is initiated. Inadvertently becomes this for Yuya after he somehow fuses his consciousness with the guy and in times of distress, Yuya becomes more violent as a result, despite Yuto being an inherent [[NiceGuy good man]], although Yuya's own SuperpoweredEvilSide has likely more to do with it.
* {{Synchronization}}: [[spoiler:In episode 87-88 and 92, his mind syncs alongside Yuya, Yugo, and Yuri's.]]
* TakeUpMySword: After his defeat against Yugo, Yuto gives to Yuya his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon before he fuses with him.

* UniformityException: His Dragon breaks the Level [[ArcNumber 7]] rule amongst the Yu's. And instead of being Rank 7, it's Rank 4. Later subverted when Yuya is able to combine and overlay Yuto's dragon with his own, giving birth to a combination of the dragons aptly named Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon, a Xyz Pendulum monster that's ''Rank 7''.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Willing to do what is necessary to create a world without conflict, and to save his comrades. Subverted in that he's much more compassionate towards his enemies than Kurosaki, and tries to avoid fights whenever possible.
* WhenHeSmiles: Yuto is always seen with a frown on his face. The only times he ever smiled genuinely was when he got to know Yuzu while bidding her farewell and entrusting Yuya with his ace monster before being absorbed into him. Yuzu was visibly affected when she sees it, as it makes him resemble Yuya even more.
* WholeCostumeReference: His outfit besides his cape looks just like Yuma's school uniform except dark and edgy instead of light and colorful.
* TheWorfEffect: Gets taken down by Yugo. Granted, Yuya's interference may have caused this.

A girl that comes from the same place Yuto and her brother Shun Kurosaki comes from: Heartland. Yuto mistakes Yuzu for Ruri when they first met and it implied that they are very close friends given how far Yuto is willing to go to protect Yuzu from danger, on account of how similar the two are. Her whereabouts are unknown, but she was captured by Yuri on behalf of Professor Leo Akaba and most likely taken to Academia. Similar to Yuto, Ruri has [[OnlySixFaces doppelgangers]] throughout the other dimensions: Rin (Synchro), Serena (Fusion) and Yuzu (Standard).

* AndIMustScream: Averted. Sora guessed that she was sealed in a card, like everyone else who lost. Yuri later reveals that this isn't the case.
* BadassInDistress: Defeated and spirited away by the Fusion Dimension. Yuri mentions that her personality was comparable to Yuzu's, implying that she also resisted him in her kidnapping. In Episode 75, it is shown that after Yuri was able to corner her, she tried to duel him.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: She has nice earrings and jewelry when Yuri kidnaps her, despite having lived in a war zone for an undetermined amount of time.
* ChekhovMIA: Though mentioned often, she doesn't appear on-screen until episode 75, and in a flashback at that.

* FanGirl: Ruri looks really happy seeing Kaito duel, despite Kaito being part of a rival school.
* FeatherMotif: Ruri wears feather-shaped earrings and a feather-shaped bracelet, which not only gives her a connection to her brother's bird motif, but is also a hint of her deck eventually representing the bird kanji ''chou'' of the Kachou Fuugetsu principle.
* TheGhost: Although she has been mentioned by Yuto and Kurosaki multiple times, she has yet to appear in person. Despite being the first mentioned counterpart of Yuzu, both Serena and Rin (her Fusion and Synchro counterparts respectfully), have appeared on-screen before her. Her appearance is finally revealed in episode 75.
* HeroicResolve: Even when Yuri cornered her, she refused to go down without a fight.
* IdenticalStranger: To Yuzu. The entire reason Yuto even defended Yuzu in Episode 7 was because he thought Yuzu was her.
* LaResistance: She has the same red scarf on her that Yuto and Kurosaki do, implying that she was an active member of the resistance before her capture.
* LivingMacGuffin: Like all of Yuzu's counterparts, she serves as one to Leo Akaba for currently unknown reasons.

An alternate counterpart to Kaito Tenjou from ''Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL''. Prior to the invasion of Heartland, he was a Pro Duelist who was on-track to be Heartland's next Duel Champion and having fun doing it. Nowadays, he is consumed with wrath and has a deep hatred towards Academia and is kind of paranoid towards strangers. As one of the last members of Resistance, he does not hesitate from hostile methods and would card any enemy without mercy. He wields the "Cipher" archetype, a deck that revolves around having multiples of cards with the same name on the field, even if he has to manipulate them to fulfill his requirements.

* AwesomenessByAnalysis: He claims that he has a knack for figuring out what he needs to counter specific playstyles after witnessing them in action at least once. After he defeats Sawatari and Gongenzaka, he anticipates Yuya using Pendulum Summon to Special Summon multiple monsters at once in the following duel, and uses Double Exposure and Double Censorship to take advantage of Yuya's swarming capabilities.

Its kanji reads "Galaxy-Eyes Lightwave Dragon," furthering the reference to photons. Even the summon chant is nearly identical to that of the original Galaxy-Eyes. The biggest difference? He replaces "become the light of hope" with "become the ''wrathful God of retribution''."

Those who aren't overly sadistic are instead very adamant about fulfilling the mission they were given (Serena, Barrett). He has been revealed as a member of the faction that destroyed Kurosaki's and Yuto's home, specifically a Duel Soldier from a school known as Academia, located in the Fusion Dimension. With his identity revealed, Sora returns to Academia and has become Yuya and the others' enemy. He returns later during the Synchro Dimension saga, replacing Dennis after his compromise with the Lancers, under orders to retrieve both Serena and Yuzu. * HiddenDepths: Initially, there were no hints as to what they were, but Sora's not just an annoying kid. Yuto especially stated Sora isn't from "around here". In Episode 33, he reacts for a second at the name "Heartland". And in episode 34, he reveals himself to be part of the faction attacking Kurosaki and Yuto's hometown, saying that they do it for fun. In Episode 35, he reveals what the Fusion faction do to their victims: not keeping them prisoners in holding cells, ''but in cards.''
** On a more positive note, it's heavily implied by his use of Yuya's catchphrase that he genuinely respects Yuya. * IronicEcho: Says Yuya's trademark line, "The fun's just getting started!", as he makes the winning move against Kurosaki. The dark red background, the shadows in Sora's eyes, and his insane smile and laughter makes the scene all types of disturbing.
* JapanesePronouns: Uses the masculine pronoun ''boku'', which is usually used by young boys. Except when he gets serious against Yuto, and switches to the more masculine and mature "ore."

* JerkassHasAPoint: As mentioned in BrutalHonesty, he was pretty spot on when he pointed out that Yuya was the only reason LDS didn't acquire the You Show Duel School.
* KickTheDog: Several. He reveals gleefully how his group attacked Heartland, and then turns Hikage into a card. He then completely rejects Yuya's attempts to invoke a HeelFaceTurn, claiming that they were never friends.
* KillerRabbit: His Furnimal/Edge Imp/Des-Toy deck. Also a reflection of his own BadassAdorable nature and his HiddenDepths. Note that in the real game (but not in series yet) there is a monster called Furnimal Rabbit.

The Synchro arc is starting to subvert this trope, as Yuya's constant questioning is slowly bringing Sora around to his way of thinking, to the point that he even apologizes to Tsukikage for carding Hikage.
* LeParkour: Being trained in Fusion has its upsides. He has improbably good skills for a small child, being able to WallJump, leap across wide gaps and rooftops, and ''chase a D-Wheel''.
* LetsGetDangerous: He sees most of his duels as just a plaything, since nobody (aside Yuya) has been able to pass his Des-Toy Scissor Bear, until Episode 33. Kurosaki outsmarts him and destroys his monsters with Raid Raptors - Rise Falcon. Sora, at the end of the episode, though a little surprised, gets up, pulls a SlasherSmile and he finally decides to get a serious fight.
* LooseLips: Was dragged back to Academia for revealing their plans to Yuto, but not Yuya (though he was there), since Standard Dimension isn't the enemy.
* MeaningfulName: His dub surname "Perse" is both a shade of purple and the name of a real-life private school in Cambridge, signifying his allegiance to Academia (recall that Fusion Monsters have purple card borders). His original surname, "Shiun'in", also incorporates kanji for "violet" and "school".
* MoralityPet: Yuya and Yuzu are this for him.
* MrExposition: Oddly enough. He is the only one in You Show that seems to know the mechanics of the advanced Summoning methods that are apparently not available for general public. Especially Xyz.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Sora likes to play the playful, cheerful and (sometimes) helpless child card in his duels, until he's pushed hard enough to get dangerous. Also, because he hardly finds people able to excite him enough to do it.
** He also hides his true nature during the duel with Kurosaki until he is pushed to the edge and gleefully reveals his hand in the attacks on his hometown.
* OhCrap: He gets this quite a few times through his first duel with Kurosaki. There's also a notable one when he realizes that Yuya seems to think that he's carded Yuzu (plus he's surrounded by the enemy). Sora promptly hightails it back to his dimension. (As it later turns out, he was afraid that one of his comrades might accidently captured Yuzu while mistaking her for Serena since they switched clothes, and Sora had no intention to capture Yuzu, only Serena.)

** He agreed to teach Yuzu how to Fusion Summon. Subverted, as he later revealed that it was for the glory of Fusion. Double Subverted, he later admits it was out of friendship.
** An odd version. He finishes up his final qualifier duel quickly, to ensure that Yuzu has time to see the end of Yuya's duel with Mieru. He then later gave Yuya an honest congratulations for Fusion Summoning perfectly on his first try.
** After his allegiance to the BigBad is revealed, he gets one when the Professor orders him to recapture Serena who looks like Yuzu. Sora is shocked at the idea of capturing his friend. Even after the Professor clarifies that Serena and Yuzu are different people, he has trouble getting past the fact Serena looks too much like Yuzu.
** Later after he saves Dennis he insists that he goes home because he is hurt, and promises that he will complete his mission for him, all the while being extremely courteous and kind to him.
** After saving Yuzu from certain death, he drags her unconscious body somewhere safe before going out to give Yuya a message.
** :He later genuinely apologizes to Tsukikage for his brother, though he knows it won't make up for it, and asks he simply wait until after Yuya is safe to take revenge.

** He considers a rematch between Yuzu and Masumi will have a vastly different outcome, since he was the one who taught Yuzu the mechanics of Fusion Summoning. Angered, she immediately wants to duel HIM, which then causes Sora to lament what a waste of time it would be, ''since he'll end up hurting her confidence even more.''

** Even then though, Sora acts extremely smug, not believing that Kurosaki will get past his Fusion Monsters. Each time they activate their effects or attack though, Kurosaki still has a counter towards them. Sora undergoes SanitySlippage, yelling that Kurosaki won't survive the attack and effect of Des-Toy Mad Chimaera. Kurosaki uses the effect of Chimaera against Sora, using a Rank-Up card to summon Raid Raptors - Revolution Falcon, and wins the duel, on Sora's turn no less. After that, Sora begs Kurosaki for a rematch, only for Kurosaki to walk away as Sora faints.
** The guy is still arrogant despite his loss to Kurosaki, claiming that "he wasn't going all out" and that if he did, he could've easily won. Notably, whenever he's being bested in a duel, Sora starts losing his cool.
** His arrogance returns in full force when he engages in a rematch with Kurosaki. When Kurosaki suggests that he go grab a Action Card to help him out, Sora states that he doesn't need anything like that and his skill will be enough. He's proven right.
** Agrees with having a rematch duel with Yuya since he doesn't like the fact that he has a "loss record" with him.
* ThePromise: He made a promise with Yuya to protect Yuzu for him in Episode 80. Sora even states that he plans to uphold it by bring Yuya to Yuzu.

A member of Academia under the direct command of Professor Leo Akaba. Like Yuto and Yugo, he strongly resembles Yuya. Yuri has captured Ruri and Rin from their respective dimensions on behalf of the Professor and with Serena under their wing, his new task is to capture Yuzu, the fourth and final piece. Cold, cruel and ruthless in his tasks, Yuri is one of the most sadistic characters introduced in the series, with an effective dueling style that has yet to be shown. Later revealed to be the Fusion Dimensional Counterpart to Yuya, due to them [[OnlySixFaces sharing the same face.]] He uses a Predator Plants deck.

Since Yugo only saw Yuri's face at night, along with the fact that Yuri was wearing a cloak to disguise himself, he automatically assumed Yuto was the culprit; in turn, Yuto mistook Yugo for Yuri since Ruri was already missing. In short, Yuri took advantage of the general confusion between the two counterparts and threw off any trail leading back to himself, all the while smiling in the background like the cunning bastard that he is.
* DarkIsEvil: His ace monster belongs to the Attribute DARK.
* DeathGlare: He gives a chilling one to [[spoiler:Yugo]].

The Resistance. The remaining Xyz duelists who haven't been captured by Academia; they are the last remnants of a world that's gone to hell due to dimensional invaders. The Xyz dimension was originally a peaceful place to live in before they were attacked without warning. Somehow, duelists of the Resistance were able to procure the same technology as their enemies and can now inflict real damage on their opponents and seal them away into cards. Only time will tell if their efforts against their enemies will pay off, though according to Sora, these duelists are fighting a losing battle. They are based off of [[Anime/YuGiOhZEXAL the fourth Yu-Gi-Oh! series]], with Heartland being their setting and their main summoning method being Xyz.

* ApocalypseHow: Class 1, Civilization Disruption. A majority of the citizens have been sealed away and there aren't that many left. The once bright city of Heartland has now been reduced to a dying wasteland.
* ArchEnemy: The Resistance ''hates'' anyone associated with Academia. Can you really blame them? Kurosaki in particular is so filled with hate that he started attacking those associated with LDS in the Standard Dimension, not thinking of the consequences that could arise (bringing unneeded attention to themselves, innocent people who know nothing about the war sealed away, etc.) Even Yuto carries a grudge towards them, despite his pacifistic nature.
* BigGood: Next to the Lancers and the Standard Dimension trying to oppose Academia, the Resistance is this as well.
* CardboardBoxHome: Their base is made up of a hundred or so tents camped in the same area.
* FirstNameBasis: They all call Kurosaki by his first name.
* LaResistance: It's in their name.
* PlayingCardMotifs: The duel schools, Spade and Clover are mentioned.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The Resistance fighters don't have any formal uniforms; aside from rather militaristic tattered clothing,the only article they have in common is a red scarf.

* TheRemnant: Academia considers anyone from the Xyz dimension to be this and make it a point to hunt them down. Yuto and Kurosaki get ticked whenever they are referred to this, as they believe that eventually, they will take back their homes and friends.
* ReportsOfMyDeathWereGreatlyExaggerated: Possibly. Sora seemed to think they were thoroughly defeated and talked about them as though Kurosaki and Yuto were part of a tiny handful of survivors. Flashbacks in episode 75 reveal that they have at least one refugee camp filled with rows of tents, and the dialogue implies that this may be just one of several refugee camps. Nothing is currently known of the Resistance outside of Heartland, so their status is up in the air. Subverted in Episode 100. When Yuya asks a Heartland woman about the Resistance, she replies that most of them were already wiped out by Academia.

He learns that LDS is not associated with Academia, but he decides to follow Yuzu from the shadows to protect her, since she resembles Ruri. Accepting that they are not the same, but relieved that Yuzu is learning Fusion Summoning not for evil, he tells her about his mission. After Sora loses to Kurosaki in the Maiami Championship, Yuto pays him a visit to interrogate him, which eventually leads to his meeting with Yuya. Despite Yuya's initial hostility, Yuto makes peace him and tells him about the existence of the other dimensions. Shortly after that, Yugo appears out of nowhere and they duel each other again, still believing that they are enemies. But once they summon their dragons, they are possessed by their SuperpoweredEvilSide. While Yuya manages to bring Yuto back to his senses, he fails to do the same with Yugo, resulting that Yuto loses the duel and is greatly injured by Yugo's last attack. Before disappearing into light, Yuto inherits Yuya his Dark Rebellion Dragon Xyz Dragon and his last will: to make everyone smile with his dueling. He is absorbed by Yuya and his spirit still resides within him.

He uses a Phantom Knights deck that focuses on summoning Xyz Monsters, including his Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon, and makes use of Spell Cards that can be activated from the graveyard. It is later revealed that he is the Xyz Dimensional Counterpart to Yuya, due to them [[OnlySixFaces sharing the same face]].

Dennis is supposedly an exchange student from the LDS Broadway branch who takes the Xyz Summon course. After saving Yuya from Ryozanpaku's duel school students, he tells the young entertainer that he's an admirer of his father Yusho's dueling style, hence the flamboyancy in his duels. Later becomes one of the top 8 Junior Youth participants. He's later revealed shortly afterwards to be a mole for the main antagonists of the series: Academia, working directly with Yuri and spying on the Lancers. During the Friendship Tournament in the Synchro Saga, Kurosaki exposes Dennis for not only what he really is but got him to shed more details on the fall of the Xyz Dimension and his role in Ruri's disappearance. Similar to Sora, Dennis is now considered an enemy to Yuya and friends, and he was expelled from the Lancers for his betrayal and forced to return to Academia.

He plays a balanced Entermage/Antique Gear hybrid deck, which fully brings out the potential of Pendulum, Xyz and Fusion Summoning.

* AffablyEvil: It's hard to tell just how much that goofy Broadway showman personality is a front, but while pretending to be a friend of the Lancers, he's pretty good at faking it. Dennis genuinely does love his Entertainment persona but is willing to set it aside for his mission, no matter how melancholy he becomes.
* AncientGrome: Along with ClockPunk. After his true colors are revealed, he starts playing Antique Gear monsters.
* AnimeAccentAbsence: He and Olga don't speak with an accent like Halil.
* ArchEnemy: Similar to Sora, Dennis now considers Kurosaki this, since an already hostile rivalry between the two has devolved into outright hate for one another when Dennis' identity has been revealed thanks to the Xyz rebel. For exposing his mission, Dennis intends to ''fully'' pay back Kurosaki for tearing off his "mask". Unfortunately for him, he fails...'''hard'''.
** The same is true in reverse, though Kurosaki most likely considers Dennis more of an ArchEnemy than Sora since Sora is just an arrogant hyped up kid who wants to prove his worth; [[ItsPersonal Dennis actually orchestrated Ruri's kidnapping and fall of his dimension.]] And while Kurosaki was indifferent about Reiji having him spare Sora, he was beyond pissed when he stopped him from carding Dennis.
* {{Badass}}: He's immediately introduced as a better entertainer than Yuya, and a better Duelist than Yuzu. In all his Duels thus far, he seems to be toying with his opponents and always maintains control. The Synchro Dimension has him up on more equal footing though.

* BaitTheDog: It looks like he will be the Johan to Yuya's Judai, as a kindred spirit with similar mannerisms and views on life. Then he turns out to be TheMole.

Yuya and Yuzu are especially horrified, though Kurosaki had his suspicions since their first duel and Reiji [[CrazyPrepared wasn't surprised that a spy somehow managed to make it on their team]].
* BigDamnHeroes: He joins Yuya's duel against Takeda and Umesugi by saving Yuya. He receives 2000 damage as a penalty because he wasn't part of the duel yet when Takeda's Fuujin was about to inflict effect damage to Yuya. Sadly he only did this to get into Yuya's good graces; his actual personality is pretty rotten.
* BirdsOfAFeather: He's also an Entertainer duelist and idolizes Yusho Sasaki and his style. This helps him to connect with Yuya and show him how to overcome his fear towards Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon by showing him how to use it to give a great show. This personality is a front he put up in order to get Yuya to trust him.
* BishieSparkle: Sparkles are all over him and his monsters for the sake of being flashy.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: He's introduced as a kind and silly character, but that was an act to find Yuzu for Yuri. This is shown clearly in Episode 47 where he pretends to help Yuya and Gongenzaka find Yuzu, when he's really leading them into a trap.
* BreakTheHaughty: For all his smug taunts on Kurosaki on how he befriended Ruri and had her kidnapped, Kurosaki pays him back by blasting him all the way from orbit with Satellite Cannon Falcon. That shut him up pretty effectively.
* CallBack: Yuya notes that the duel taking place between Dennis and Kurosaki in the Synchro Dimension has similar traits to the duel between Sora and Kurosaki in the Standard Dimension: a duel taking place in a tournament like setting that starts innocently enough, but then devolves into violence and hate, complete with shocking revelations about the "friendly" duelist.
* CastingAShadow: Entermage Shadow Maker is a DARK monster. As is his Antique Gear Chaos Giant.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "The show must go on!" After being exposed, he falls back to what the Academia students love saying: "Let's begin the hunting game!"

* EvilAllAlong: He was always TheMole for Academia. PlayedForLaughs in his duel against Gongenzaka, where he switches from the role of {{Face}} to {{Heel}} because Gongenzaka didn't want to be the villain.

Noticeably in his second duel with Kurosaki, Trapeze actually reached for an action card for Dennis and Dennis gave a SayMyName for the card when it was destroyed not unlike what Yuya does when Odd-Eyes was destroyed by Sora in their first duel.
** In addition, he's actually one to fellow Fusion Dimension duelist Sora. The two are initially presented as similar, being friends with the main cast with an affinity for entertainment, who then turn out to be associated with Academia. The primary difference is that Sora revels in the pain that he causes and hid his true personality, in addition to having MASSIVE {{Pride}} issues, while Dennis is not only "nicer" overall and genuinely regrets doing what he has to do (though it won't prevent him from doing it), he is far more humble, notably accepting his loss to Kurosaki when Sora turned into a blubbering mess after both went through an arguably similar VillainousBreakdown. A second point of difference is how well they mentally internalize their statuses as moles. [[spoiler:Both Dennis and Sora are showing signs of ForcedIntoEvil, but while Dennis shows no signs of revolting despite having spent an undetermined amount of time in the Xyz Dimension compared to Sora who's spent at best a few months in Standard, but is willing to defect from the Academia to protect Yuya and Yuzu.]]

* LoudGulp: In Episode 50, he gives one (either out of fear or awe) when he was told (and watched himself) that [[TheAce Reiji]] specialized in all types of Summon (Fusion, Synchro, Xyz and Pendulum).
* TheMole: In reality, he's an agent of Academia, particularly Yuri, and is only pretending to be friendly to Yuya and company to better let their guard down; he's just as bad as his companions. Episode 75 reveals he was this in the Xyz dimension as well, pretending to be a street magician while he was looking for Ruri.
* MonsterClown: His Entermages are a combo of this and StageMagician, since he is actually evil.
* MonstrousHumanoid: Dennis' true ace monster is not some silly creepy Xyz clown but a ''giant, horrifying mechanized Fusion abomination''. The fact that it looks humanoid makes it worse since its joints are made up of Antique Gear Hound ''heads''.
* MoralityPet: Trapeze Magician. When Kurosaki destroys it in battle, he is visibly crushed. He also seems to have a good relationship with it, not unlike Yuya and his Odd-Eyes.
* MulticoloredHair: Red on the front part of his hair, and brown/dark red on the back part of his hair.
* NegatedMomentOfAwesome: Downplayed; his BigDamnHero moment was cool, but the 2000 life point penalty detracts from the awesomeness.
* NiceGuy: He willingly decided to help Yuya in the 2 vs 1 duel, and treated Yuzu with a great deal of respect during their Duel, including teaching her some tactics. Subverted in that it's all an act.
* NiceHat: Pulls a top hat out of nowhere to be a StageMagician.
* NoSell: The Entermages do this to effect damage. Trapeze Magician can negate both effect damage and battle damage lower than its ATK.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: He pretended to be a silly foreigner to get info about Yuya and Yuzu. He actively pretends to be ignorant of the interdimensional war.
* OhCrap: He gets one in Episode 50 when faced with the possibility that his status as TheMole may have been blown, and that there may be witnesses of him talking to Yuri, or of the later taking Yuzu thanks to Reiji's SinisterSurveillance.
** He gets another one in episode 53 after Serena forces Reiji to reveal that Yuri didn't take Yuzu to Academia, and instead disappeared with Yugo.
** Gets his biggest one when Satellite Cannon Falcon is summoned before him, and it gets even more worse when he realizes his own monster is stopping him from reaching for Action Cards and that he is unable to prevent his defeat.
* PragmaticVillainy: He uses Xyz monsters instead of Fusion, since his cover would be blown if he did. Notable since most Fusion Dimension agents look down on Xyz users. That being said, he seems to genuinely enjoy using his Trapeze Magician.
* PutOnABus: Sora sends a reluctant Dennis home to Academia due the injures he sustained from his duel with Kurosaki, and because to prevent Dennis from contunuing to spy on Serena. Dennis is not even seen once during the fourth opening/ending.
* RealityEnsues: When you splash a secondary engine in that supports a different deck entirely, you're going to draw a card that you ''really'' don't want to see at the moment on a few occasions.
* RegretfulTraitor: He claims that he didn't want to stop being an Entertainer back in Heartland, but given that he found [[MacguffinGirl Ruri]], he had no [[TrappedInVillainy choice but]] [[JustFollowingOrders to greenlight the invasion]].
* ShipTease:
** Maybe it was just an act, but there's plenty of it in his duel against Yuzu; from him introducing himself to her while [[NoSenseOfPersonalSpace getting really close]] and offering her a rose, to the end of the duel when he saved her, all while talking suave to her.
** Turns out it was an act, since his actions in episode 62 mirrors his actions in the flashback during episode 75. He flirts with the target he's trying to capture to gain their trust then points them out to Yuri when they are vulnerable.
* SlasherSmile: He had one in Episode 45 during his duel with Serena. Later he has a few internal ones as he goes about spying on Yuya and his friends. In Episode 74 and 75, Dennis starts letting more and more of these out after his cover has been blown by Kurosaki.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: An official site gives us Dennis Mackfield while the English Dub uses [=McField=]. Fan spellings use the former and leave the K out.
* SpottingTheThread: Kurosaki notices something is up about him due to him being a little too good of a duelist for Standard, being more akin to a battle tested duelist.

* StreetPerformer: When he and Gongenzaka are separated from the others in the Synchro Dimension, he puts on shows for children, to try to make enough of a scene so the others find him. He was also this in the Xyz Dimension, which was how he met Ruri.
* SuicidalGotcha: He did this in Episode 43 as part of his performance while dueling. He does it again in Episode 44 to save Yuzu from falling.
* SurprisinglyGoodEnglish: His [[Creator/TetsuyaKakihara seiyuu]] speaks fluent English, so Dennis's English is anything but bad.

* ThisCannotBe: When Kurosaki summons his Satellite Cannon Falcon and weakens Antique Gear Chaos Giant enough for him to destroy it, Dennis' attempts to get an Action Card to save himself are denied every time, leading him into his breakdown below.
* TookALevelInJerkass: With his identity revealed to the world, he drops the nice guy act and reveals his true personality: a psychotic soldier who revels in the despair of his victims. In Episode 75, he's taunting Kurosaki relentlessly, saying that if he had more resolve and power, his dimension would still be in one piece. He then actually reveals to be the one who called in the invasion force for the Xyz dimension in the first place and had a hand in Ruri's capture.
* VillainousBreakdown: As his second duel with Kurosaki reaches its climax, Dennis enters a breakdown similar to Sora's; his ace monster is about to be destroyed and no matter what he does to prevent it, fate itself seemed to interrupt Dennis' efforts.

It was due to Dennis' actions that the dimension fell into hell in the first place. If that wasn't enough, he actually met up with Yuri and pointed out where Ruri was so he could go ahead and capture her. This situation most likely repeated itself in the Synchro Dimension for Rin (though an invasion wasn't called in) and most definitely happened in the Standard Dimension for Yuzu (though this time Yuri failed to get his target).
