    Midori Arisugawa

Midori Arisugawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/midori_arisugawa.png

One of the two new vice-presidents of the student council. Known as the "big-boobed airhead".

Apart from the student council, she is not a member of any clubs.

Ten years later, in the epilogue, she attends Yamada and Shiraishi's wedding, showing that she still keeps in touch with them, though it isn't known what she's otherwise up to.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: She drops to her knees and begs for forgiveness when Miyamura catches her and Kurosaki hatching secret plans about taking over the student council.
  • The Bait: Yamada enlists her as a decoy in his plan to lure out the peeper who's terrorizing the club house. His idea is that she should pretend to strip to get the peeper's attention, though Arisugawa misunderstands and starts to actually strip.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Unlike most examples, she usually wears contacts instead of glasses, but she is still blind enough without them to not recognize Yamada on a close distance.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: She is silly, but she is smart, and she has proved herself to be very efficient at doing research - when the student council needs data about certain students, she's usually the one who collects it.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Has huge breasts which makes her popular among some boys, though she claims to not like them herself.
  • Characterization Marches On: Some of her initial major traits, like clumsiness/awkwardness and airheadedness, have practically disappeared in her later appearances. Granted, the latter was mostly an act, but she has still stopped playing dumb.
  • Character Tics: She has a strong tendency to pull out a Declarative Finger when telling people something. Of course, she's not the only character to do that, but she does it more often than the others.
  • Child Prodigy: She was one six years ago when she didn't only have really good grades and attended cram school, but also had plenty of other talents, like karate and playing the violin.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She's not entirely there, so she's usually good for a weird idea or silly comment.
  • Covert Pervert:
    • She seems quite innocent most of the time (at least in the sexual way, since she is still a cunning schemer), but what's the first thing she does after swapping bodies with Yamada? Zipping down his pants and commenting that his penis looks different than Miyamura's.
    • Even earlier on, she covers her eyes with her hands like a shy schoolgirl when Kurosaki strips down to his boxers, but allows herself to peek at him through her fingers.
  • Cram School: She attended one in elementary school. It's not known if she still does.
  • Cuckoosnarker: Despite being quite the weirdo, she's also sane enough to be genuinely witty here and there.
  • The Cutie: She's sweet, a bit clumsy, somewhat childish at times, and even has a teddy bear purse as her signature item.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 113 which features Yamada swapping bodies with her.
  • D-Cup Distress: She mentions in one of her early chapters that she never wanted her breasts to grow this big. She hasn't complained about it since and has even taken advantage of their size at one point, so maybe she simply didn't want Odagiri to make fun of them.
  • Declarative Finger: She does this so often when telling people something that it's practically her Character Tic.
  • Demoted to Extra: After the student council is dissolved and she starts helping Tamaki in the new student council instead of hanging out with Yamada, her role in the story is essentially over, and save for a brief gag about her not wanting to take over the Supernatural Studies Club, she gets no individual focus for the rest of the series.
  • The Ditz: Subverted. She is introduced as a rather dense girl but it later becomes apparent that she is actually pretty damn smart - a bit absent-minded and weird, granted, but not stupid at all. In a flashback, she is said to have been a brilliant student before Suzaku.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Her hair was not as thick when she first appeared and it was much more neatly combed compared to the spiky look it later takes. Her already big breasts also looked even bigger in her initial appearances.
  • Erotic Eating: Not in the story proper, but on the not-very-subtle cover page of chapter 214, she can be seen drinking milk while wearing only a Modesty Towel, with milk dripping from her mouth and from the bottle onto her boobs.
  • Fille Fatale: Seems to have been this in her elementary school days as she mentions how she would kiss the boys in her class to make them happy.
  • Friendless Background: Despite being very outgoing, she doesn't have any friends when she joins the student council.
  • The Gadfly: She likes teasing others for fun, especially Yamada, Kurosaki and Odagiri.
  • Genki Girl: She is very cheery and flighty.
  • Girls with Moustaches: She puts on a fake moustache and calls herself Lincoln (and sits down in an armchair) whenever she wants to say something wise. (Abraham Lincoln had a beard but no moustache, but this might just be her being herself.)
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: She's a cheerful Genki Girl and is most often seen with Kurosaki who's a stand-offish loner.
  • Guile Hero: For someone who was introduced as an airhead, she is incredibly cunning. She has shown to be very much aware of her own body language when she tries to charm people, and she manages to manipulate Yamada into playing a body-swap game against his will, after which she easily fools people into thinking she's the real Yamada.
  • Hair Antennae: She has them, and per the trope description, she comes off as an airhead... At the start.
  • Hand Signals: She does this when she needs Kurosaki to swap bodies with Yamada because they cannot talk about their plan in front of Yamada - pointing to her own mouth to signal "kiss him" and then making a grabbing movement with her hand to signal "I have your back".
  • "I Can't Look!" Gesture: When Kurosaki strips down to his boxers on the first student council trip, she embarrassedly covers her eyes... and then can't help herself from peeking at him through her fingers. Her embarrassment doubles as Hypocritical Humor as she also just stripped down to her underwear in front of him and Yamada.
  • I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: She tries to make Yamada look at her boobs from the right angle when she wants to curry favor. He does, but it doesn't quite work because he read her thoughts.
  • Jerkass Ball: Played for Laughs, but she still seems uncharacteristically arrogant when she refuses to join the Supernatural Studies Club because it would be below her "social strata".
  • Lots of Luggage: She brings a ridiculously huge bag - including three sleep mats - for the first student council trip even though they're only going to stay for one night.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Usually, her manipulation is fairly harmless and funny, but when she's at her worst, she can be this, most notably when she thinks up a plan that will make her and Kurosaki more popular with Miyamura, but with the end goal of taking over the school and making Kurosaki do the grunt work.
  • Master Actress: She is almost uncannily good at pretending to be Yamada when she has swapped bodies with him. The only one she cannot fool is Shiraishi who seems to pick up even the most subtle of Yamada's manners by pure instinct.
  • Ms. Fanservice: One of the most blatant Fanservice girls in the series. She has regular underwear shots (and even wears a G-string at one occasion) and is seen naked a couple of times. Her ginormous boobs certainly help her case.
  • Muggle: She doesn't have any powers.
  • Nice Girl: She's generally very good-natured (especially compared to the general Jerk with a Heart of Gold tendency of the series), though she can also be slightly mischievous and is a skilled manipulator.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Treated Yamada, the unpopulary secretary, no different from the other student council members when she was being interviewed for the vice-president spot.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Yamada's mind-reading and various other scenes prove that a lot of her ditzy behavior is just to look cute so that people will like her. However, she is a bit confusing in that she seems to have a genuinely ditzy side to her that appears from time to time.
  • Pint-Sized Kid: While of average height in the present, she was pretty tiny as a 10-year-old, not even reaching to present-day Kurosaki's waist.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: She rarely does anything really plot-relevant (her "swap bodies with Yamada and praise us in front of Miyamura" scheme may be the only example), but she provides a lot of comedy.
  • The Pollyanna: Despite having a Friendless Background, she is very cheerful and optimistic, trying her best to be a good vice-president and make friends with the other members.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She has pink hair and is mostly a very lively and nice person.
  • Singing in the Shower: She hasn't been shown showering, but when washing up in the hot springs, she sings an inaudible tune to herself.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Although briefly covering up out of surprise, she didn't exactly make a big deal out of Yamada seeing her naked, neither when she thought he was the janitor, or when he landed on her in a Suggestive Collision.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Her stereotypical "blonde, buxom bombshell" look (though a color spread proves she isn't actually a blonde) isn't something most would associate with smartness over all things, but she's actually a cunning manipulator and even used to be a Child Prodigy.
  • Stepford Smiler: Chapter 113 implies that this may be the case, going by her reaction when Yamada takes her workload and encourages her to go make friends. Or she's simply an optimistic Pollyanna.
  • The Smart Girl: She tends to play this role in the student council, since she is often the one doing research.
  • Tareme Eyes: Fits with her friendly demeanor.
  • The Tease: She does have some fun seeing others' reactions to her physical attributes, whether it's placing Yamada's hand on her chest or hugging Kurosaki from behind while in Miyamura's body.
  • Those Two Guys: With Kurosaki. They are always hanging out together, are (at least at first) the "normal" newcomers in the world of witches, and often pop up to say funny things.
  • Took a Level in Smartass: At her introduction, she's way too airheaded and silly to be much of a snarker, but at the winter trip, she seems to have suddenly gained a dry sense of humor. When she and Odagiri talk about switching bodies with Yamada, and Odagiri mentions that "an innocent high school girl shouldn't just kiss a boy", Arisugawa instantly retorts "you're one to talk". She also comes with similar quips later on in the series.
  • Too Smart for Strangers: Parodied when Kurosaki travels back in time and meets her 10-year-old self. One gaze from him is enough for her to be convinced that he’s a creepy old man and that everything he does is an attempt to kidnap her.
  • You, Get Me Coffee: She had hoped to do lots of useful stuff for the student council as a vice-president, so she is quite disappointed when the only task for her to do is making tea. Apparently, the purpose of the vice-presidents is not as much to do actual work as it is to simply be around so the president can judge if one of them is a fit successor.

    Jin Kurosaki

Jin Kurosaki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jin_kurosaki.png

The other new student council vice-president. Known as the "jerk assassin". When Miyamura is ousted at the end of his first year, he becomes a part of the new president Tamaki's student council, as vice-president again.

Apart from the student council, he is not a member of any clubs.

Ten years later, in the epilogue, he has opened a curry shop.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: He drops to his knees and begs for forgiveness when Miyamura catches him and Arisugawa hatching secret plans about taking over the student council.
  • Blessed with Suck: Even though his wish of getting a wish power comes true, it hasn’t proved be to a good thing for him yet. Indeed, the time travel power has the very annoying effect of forcing him to travel back in time every time he kisses, and in order to return to the present, he has to kiss the past self of the kissee which isn’t always very easy. While Yamada has made good use of the power a few times, Kurosaki himself seemingly hasn’t.
  • But Not Too Gay: He does have a crush on Miyamura, but it is (with the exception of a few Imagine Spots here and there) treated more like very strong admiration instead of the sexual and romantic attraction seen with the heterosexual infatuations of the series.
  • Butt-Monkey: He is often teased by Arisugawa and can't make Miyamura notice him no matter what he does.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Like Asuka and Odagiri, he is a fairly unnoteworthy student council member (part of the main cast, granted, but not terribly important) until it is revealed that he's a witch. Unlike them, he wasn't a witch all along, but becomes one and probably wouldn't have become more important if that hadn't happened.
  • The Comically Serious: He often goes along with Arisugawa's wacky ideas while remaining completely serious or even angry. Examples are randomly stripping to attract a peeper, hiding under cardboard boxes to be on a "stake-out", and taking selfies with her while they're supposed to be working (though since Arisugawa was in Miyamura's body when they were taking selfies, it may have been Kurosaki's own idea).
  • Cower Power: As a result of his comical fear of Takuma, he will hide behind the nearest person whenever he thinks Takuma is nearby. It's especially funny when he hides behind Arisugawa who's much shorter than him.
  • A Day in the Limelight: In chapter 123 when it's revealed that he's a witch, and he uses his power to travel to Arisugawa's past.
  • Delinquent: Subverted. He definitely gives off this vibe at the start, but he hasn't done anything outright bad - he's just not good with people.
  • Demoted to Extra: After the student council is dissolved and he starts helping Tamaki in the new student council instead of hanging out with Yamada, his role in the story is mostly over, and he receives no individual focus for the rest of the series except for when Yamada wants to copy his time travel power (and as a witch, he's of course needed for a ceremony).
  • De-power: Along with all other witches, he loses his power after Shiraishi, the "original witch", leaves the school.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Initially, he just seems to be a Suspiciously Similar Substitute of Inose due to his irritable demeanor and hoodie. When his crush on Miyamura is implied, it's clear that they're at least somewhat different, and he soon gets enough development and characterization to be much different from her.
  • Flanderization: His infatuation with Miyamura has went from being fairly subtle at his introduction to being his defining character trait.
  • Friendless Background: Due to being a loner by nature (and extremely awkward in his early high school days), he never had any friends before joining the student council.
  • Gay Best Friend: To Arisugawa, though it isn't emphasized a whole lot since he's a Straight Gay. She just seems to be the only one who is actually aware of his crush on Miyamura.
  • Get Back to the Future: His big problem when he travels to the past the first time. At first, he has no idea how to return to the present, and when he finds out that he has to kiss Arisugawa again, it causes him many difficulties when he needs to kiss her without causing a stir.
  • Gleeful and Grumpy Pairing: He's a stand-offish loner and is most often seen with Arisugawa who's a cheerful Genki Girl.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: Given how he softens up after being in the student council for some time, it’s clear that some of his initial Jerkass behavior was to mask his insecurity and wasn’t really genuine.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Since Miyamura doesn't notice his affections and has his own mind occupied with people like Yamada and Leona, it indeed seems like Kurosaki is fighting a hopeless battle.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: He wishes he had a witch power so that he could be useful to Miyamura. Guess what he gets...?
  • In the Hood: His trademark is that he wears a hoodie instead of the usual shirt or sweater of the school uniform. He's called an "assassin" as a probable Shout-Out to the Assassin's Creed costumes resembling his hoodie.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: As revealed by Yamada's mind-reading, he actually has a certain amount of self-doubt because he thinks Miyamura doesn't care about/notice him. This manifests in him demeaning others instead.
  • Informed Attractiveness: He is supposedly very attractive with all the girls swooning over him, and it's not like he's bad-looking, but he doesn't look like noteworthily different in terms of attractiveness than for example Yamada and Tamaki.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At the start, he - while not completely obnoxious - does act somewhat antisocial and impolite plus doesn't have many redeeming moments. Yamada even considers him a jerk. With time, he also shows a softer side, managing to befriend at least Arisugawa and Yamada.
  • Last-Name Basis: One of the few characters who have never been referred to by their first names (he also never calls others by their first names).
  • Lovable Coward: Despite the slightly scary appearance he gives off at first, he's actually a bit of a scaredy-cat, given his comical fear of Takuma.
  • Mental Time Travel: His witch power. He enters the past of the person he kisses and has to kiss their past self to return to the present. His body stays in the present while his mind travels to the past, though he gets a new body in the past. As a rule, the power makes him time-travel to the point in the past where his presence would cheer up the kissee the most. However, he can decide the point of time on his own if he can make the kissee think of something connected to that memory. He dubs this ability "Memory Dive". It's suggested that he can change the kissee's future retroactively by using the power, but not the general future of the world.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: When he meets a six years younger Arisugawa in the past and has to kiss her to get back to the present. He doesn't know how to talk to children so he tries out various very stupid things, like randomly offering her candy. At least he's smart enough to not outright demand her to kiss him. Actually, she uses the word "kidnapper", but the implications are the same as if she said "pedophile".
  • Newspaper Dating: It's only after checking the year on a newspaper that he fully realizes that he's traveled back in time.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Technically, even though he is the opposite of Arisugawa: Arisugawa is friendly towards Yamada from the start despite his low student council rank and terrible reputation. Kurosaki is a jerk towards him, just like the other vice-president applicants, but we soon find out that the other applicants acted perfectly nice in the company of Miyamura, Tamaki and Odagiri, while Kurosaki continued being a jerk. As such, he isn't nice against the waiter, but he doesn't see him as lower than other people, either.
  • Non-Action Guy: Despite his size and attitude, he isn't strong and usually not rowdy, and he would probably have been beaten up by some thugs if Yamada, Chikushi and Miyamura hadn't come to his rescue.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: He wears a hoodie instead of the standard shirt/sweater/vest of the Suzaku school uniform.
  • No-Sell: As a witch, he is immune to other witch powers except for the seventh witch's powers and his own if someone with the copy power uses it against him.
  • Origins Episode: Chapter 124 sheds light on how his aloof personality came to be.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Is usually seen looking somewhat angry. Except when he's around/talking about Miyamura.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Except for his initial stint of using the time travel power, he is not that important to the plot, but is kept around for comedy because of his crush on Miyamura and interactions with Arisugawa.
  • Remember That You Trust Me: Even after spending a few months in the student council, he apparently doesn't fully trust the members (except Miyamura), which is one of the reasons he becomes a witch. After being given a peptalk and a display of loyalty from Yamada, he develops his own Undying Loyalty towards the whole council.
  • Shameless Fanservice Guy: He had absolutely no problem stripping in front of Arisugawa and Yamada (though he did keep his underwear on) to attract a peeper, making you wonder why he made a fuss out of someone watching him change clothes in the first place.
  • She Is the King: Gender inverted. Despite being a guy, he’s still called a "witch" ("majo" in Japanese which literally means "magical woman").
  • Single-Target Sexuality: He hasn't shown much of an attraction to anyone who isn't Miyamura.
  • Straight Gay: You wouldn't guess it from his general characterization or appearance, but the facts that he has a crush on Miyamura (which becomes more obvious with time) and finds it disgusting to kiss Arisugawa make it more or less clear that he is gay.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Is tall, has black hair, and the girls seem to find him attractive.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: He's Tall, Dark, and Handsome, and he shows a snarky side when he appears and demeans Yamada for being the irrelevant errand boy.
  • Third Wheel: To Yamada and Odagiri on their outing. Odagiri concerns herself with obsessing over Yamada, and Yamada concerns himself with being encouraged by her, leaving Kurosaki mostly to his own devices. They even make and eat dinner without him.
  • Those Two Guys: With Arisugawa. They are always hanging out together, are (at least at first) the "normal" newcomers in the world of witches, and often pop up to say funny things.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of the male witches revealed before Ushio's mind-wipe, Kurosaki is the only one who isn't abusing his power for evil or has ambiguous status.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: In the series proper, he's quite gloomy and serious, but in the epilogue he smiles a lot and seems more outgoing. He also doesn't wear a concealing hoodie anymore.
  • Troubled, but Cute: The girls like him, and he seems to be not too bad deep down, but it doesn't change that he is a loner who has always had trust problems and often acts like a jerk. This trope is the exact reason he became a witch.
  • Undying Loyalty: Despite how he often acts, he is incredibly loyal to the student council in general (not only Miyamura). The reason he's afraid of Takuma is that he fears he may turn against the student council if he loses his memories.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: His greatest wish is to have Miyamura notice him and acknowledge him as a useful student council member. It rarely happens.
  • Your Size May Vary: He looks very tall in his first appearance, to the point that Yamada calls him huge. In his following appearances, he's still not short, but doesn't seem noteworthily tall either; at most he's around Miyamura's height.
  • Zipperiffic: On the cover page of chapter 124 - one of the cover pages where Yoshikawa draws the characters wearing odd fashion - he's depicted in a hoodie with more than a dozen zippers.

    Kaori Yasojima

Kaori Yasojima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fdff9059e6e0e1d0ae9a5f07e794a193.PNG

A member of the Japanese chess club. She's a first year girl in Noa's class who initially seems simple and ditzy but has a more complex life than she lets on.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Not only is she The Friend Nobody Likes in her club - she is also wildly unpopular to the rest of the school, with her classmates making fun of her, and her (ex) boyfriend humiliating her and cheating on her.
  • Anti-Villain: She did bully Noa, but she is a bullying victim herself, and she generally doesn't have a very easy life. She's also considerably nicer to those she does care about than the other chess club members are.
  • Arc Villain: She is the only member of the Japanese chess club to get her own mini-arc dedicated to her.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Her initial "let's be friends" greeting to Noa was just a ruse to mess with her. The fact that she kisses Yamada just to hurt her makes her even worse.
  • Book Dumb: She gets an absolutely terrible score on a math test. And like any other Book Dumb character in the series, she is not really that dumb outside of her test scores.
  • Book Ends: Her character arc starts and ends up with her overhearing two bullies in the girls' bathroom and not knowing what to do. The main difference is that the first time, she manages to make them start bullying an innocent girl, and she becomes friendless in the process. The second time, she manages to stop the bullying of an innocent girl and makes a friend in the process.
  • The Bully: She was one of the people who bullied Noa, so her actions technically led to the events of one of the series' early arcs.
  • Bully Hunter: When Yamada controls her, she loses her shit over two girls bullying a third girl, defending the victim, and making friends with her in the process. It is implied, but not outright stated, that she actually chose to do this herself, and it wasn't part of Yamada's mind control.
  • Burning with Anger: She bursts into flames once she finds out that the Japanese chess club is just using her.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has very big breasts (almost Arisugawa-sized), and the first thing Miyamura suggests when she offers to do one thing for Yamada is to have him rub them.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: When Yamada kicks her ex-boyfriend, who dumped her because his other girlfriend found out about her and he planned to leave her to two of his friends for some fun, she promptly starts yelling at him saying he was getting involved in something that doesn't concern him.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Her Laser-Guided Karma. She didn't start the bullying of Noa truly on purpose, but simply wasn't able to foresee the consequences of her actions, so you could say she didn't deserve the terrible life she was given in return.
  • The Ditz: Zigzagged. She gives off a rather air-headed Valley Girl vibe from the start, complaining more about the cold draft from an open door instead of worrying about the student council's appearance. She also gets a score of mere 18 on a test and is not aware of the going-ons in the Japanese chess club. However, she also feigns ignorance about bullying Noa to Noa's face and convinces her that she forgot, and even manages to act as the Only Sane Woman to Yamada and Miyamura.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Being saved and having her troubles pointed out by Yamada really pisses her off, especially because she is forced to face reality. However, she ends up becoming grateful to him when she realizes that it's no good to live in denial.
  • First-Name Basis: More people than usual for this series refer to her by her first name, including Yamada, Noa, and her bullying classmates.
  • Freudian Excuse: She didn't really mean to bully Noa, but when she first started high school, the other girls in her class started a popularity contest between her and Noa. One day, she overheard some classmates talk about that she was annoying because she tried too hard to be noticed. Afraid that she would become a bully victim, she tried turning their attention to Noa instead, but it all spiraled out of hand, and Noa became the bully victim instead.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: None of the other chess club members enjoy her company - a fact she has realized but won't admit openly.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in pigtails and has a girly personality.
  • Grew a Spine: Her Character Development is focused on her going from being unable to stand up to anyone who's ruining her life to finally making a friend because she managed to stand up to bullies.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She has expressed that she cannot forgive the chess club for what they did to her, she has made friends with another unpopular girl by lashing out at her bullies, and she has apologized to Noa, so it's safe to say that she's not an enemy anymore.
  • Hero Antagonist: Even after pulling a Heel–Face Turn, she has decided to remain a member of the Japanese chess club, so she's still officially part of the enemy group. Later, the chess club is dissolved, presumably removing the last amount of villainy she had.
  • Hidden Depths: She initially seems to be an empty-headed girl with no bigger worries than a draft from an open door. As the other tropes show, she is a lot more conflicted than that. Also, since she chose to join a Japanese chess club of all things without knowing about the School Club Front, she's clearly more intellectual than she seems (compare with Noa who's pretty smart, but knows nothing about Japanese chess).
  • Humiliation Conga: Her day proceeds like this when Yamada is using the manipulation power on her: She starts being completely ignored by her fellow club members, then she gets bullied and humiliated by her classmates, then her boyfriend reveals he has been two-timing her, and finally she is grabbed by two thugs and would possibly have been raped, hadn't Yamada saved her.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She isn't at all as self-confident as she initially seems - it's hard to be when you're hated and humiliated by the entire school.
  • I've Come Too Far: Even though Yamada forces her to admit that the other members of the Japanese chess club don't care the slightest about her, she decides to stay there anyway, feeling that she's been there too long to go anywhere else.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: While quite spiteful towards Yamada and Noa, she has a sense of honor (wanting to repay her debt to Yamada), is able to swallow her pride and apologize, and manages to turn from a bully to a Bully Hunter.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: The swearing in the official translation is very mild, but she is still shown to have a slightly more foul language than many other characters when she gets mad.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She inadvertently makes Noa a bully victim, and that is not something she gets away from easily; she becomes a bully victim herself, and the whole school starts to hate her.
  • Love Martyr: Due to her general Selective Obliviousness, she shows signs of this when her boyfriend Atsuhito dumps her (though it's not known if he treated her badly before). He says that he two-timed her, never really cared about her and never wants to see her again, he leaves her to be molested by two thugs, and he ruins the cake she baked for him. She just laughs most of it off, and she becomes furious at Yamada and starts caressing Atsuhito when Yamada knocks him out.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She is very buxom, has visible cleavage and (at least according to her classmates) wears her skirt much shorter than the standard.
  • Muggle: Unlike Ushio and Yuri, she has no powers.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Instead of the standard ribbon of the Suzaku girls' school uniform, she wears a necktie. Though she switches to the ribbon for the student council election.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Brought up by Yamada in an attempt to help her: he says that he was actually just like her, lonely and hated, until an unexpected person appeared and saved him.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Yamada believes she is this, knowing she is the victim of bullying but feigns stupidity to still try and be accepted.
  • Only Sane Woman: Of the Japanese chess club. She is the most normal girl in the club, and she tries to mediate between the others.
  • The Pollyanna: A notable darker interpretation of her actions is that she tries to ignore all the bullying and torment around her in an attempt to still be happy. This gets deconstructed, as not only is the bullying intensified, she would also have gotten abused by her ex-boyfriend's goons had Yamada not rescued and knocked some sense into her.
  • Put on a Bus: Her role in the story ends with the resolution of her own mini-arc, and as such she doesn't appear in the rest of story except for a brief appearance at the election.
  • Reformed Bully: This is one part of her character arc, the other being Grew a Spine - she stops being a bully and starts defending bullied people instead.
  • The Rival: To Noa, initially bordering on Arch-Enemy. To the degree that she suddenly wants to kiss Yamada to upset Noa just because she finds out that she likes him (that fact was part of Noa's plan, however).
  • Selective Obliviousness: Her definite main flaw is that instead of trying to do something about her sucky life as a bully victim and pariah - or at least ask someone for help - she pretends to both herself and others that everything is perfectly well.
  • "Silly Me" Gesture: She does it when she tries to apologize for not making Asuka black tea.
  • Silly Walk: When put under the mind control power by Yamada, she adopts the same aggressive and not very ladylike stomping walk as him.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: She utters the words "it's inexcusable" when she finds out what the chess club did to her.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of the Japanese chess club. She's generally sweeter and more sociable than the other members (though not necessarily to enemies of the club), doesn't have any villainous goals on her own, and is the first one to do a Heel–Face Turn.
  • Unknown Rival: Subverted. Initially, we were led to believe that she has forgotten about how she bullied Noa, so that the hate was one-sided - but she hadn't, and after a quarrel they become official rivals.
  • Unwitting Pawn: She doesn't initially know about the witches or about the fact that the Japanese chess club isn't just a regular school club, so the others take advantage of her by using their witch powers on her.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Before chapter 136, she's seen from a distance in group shots of the Japanese chess club a few times; here she wears her hair in braids and is almost flat-chested. In chapter 136, she's given an official introduction, and her final character design has pigtails instead as well as a much larger cup size.
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: Because she tends to be submissive to the bad things happening around her, and because she often dumbs herself down, she can pretty scary when she actually gets angry, making Yamada shake when he witnessed her verbal fight with Noa – and easily scaring bullies away.

    Mutta Hagiwara

Mutta Hagiwara

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f6d7a0cec71dcd0ad4618886e7736ffa.PNG

One of the three rookie members of the Japanese chess club along with Kaori and Yuri.

  • The Brute: Seemingly his role in the Japanese chess club. He doesn't have an obvious purpose, but he isn't one of the leaders, he isn't smart like Yuri, and he isn't girly and mediating like Kaori.
  • The Hyena: He is seen laughing and/or grinning in most of his appearances.
  • In a Single Bound: He has some quite neat jumping skills as he uses in his parkour.
  • Informed Attribute: He's stated to have extremely short hair, to the point that he almost looks bald. However, from what can be seen, he has a perfectly normal boys' haircut, his hair being only a bit shorter than Yamada's.
  • Jerkass: He generally comes off as very rude and annoying.
  • Le Parkour: He is very adept at jumping roofs escaping from others.
  • Muggle: He doesn't have any powers unlike some of his fellow club members.
  • Out of Focus: He gets barely any focus compared to the other Japanese chess club members - only one scene that shows he's a fast and agile runner - and his personality never gets fleshed out.
  • Punny Name: "Hagi" sounds like "hage" which means bald, and he has very short hair. Yamada actually calls him "Baldywara" ("Hagewara") as a nickname.
  • Put on a Bus: After the Japanese chess club is disbanded, he has no role to play anymore and isn't seen for the rest of the series.
  • Sore Loser: He flips the board and shouts angrily when he loses a game of Japanese chess.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Fits with how he seems to be arrogant and smug.
  • The Unfought: He's the only member of the Japanese chess club who doesn't get a major confrontation with Yamada that makes him change his ways, making him the same person at the club's dissolution as he was when the club was founded.

Others

    Sid

Sid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/volume_13_sid.png

Nancy's sidekick. He's in the light music club with her.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Nancy's power allows her to detect the number of people under a specific Witch's power. She periodically collects and delivers this data to Sid, who organizes it in a computer and compares it against its historical values, looking for anomalies in the time series that would betray a change in the use a Witch gives to her power and thus a potential problem. Yamada was suitably impressed by this.
  • Boots of Toughness: He wears boots instead of the usual school uniform shoes, and being a punk, he often cultivates a rough demeanor.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's a punker with a Face of a Thug and mad book-keeping skills.
  • Custom Uniform: He has modified his school uniform to rebel and to fit with his desired punk look.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: He has a crush on Nancy and will as such do anything to please her so that he can get noticed.
  • Enemy Scan: As a spotter, he can tell which people are witches and witch-killers, and their location, by seeing them as dots on a map in his brain.
  • Face of a Thug: Spiky hair, narrow sharp-edged eyes and pointy teeth often exposed in a Slasher Smile... Yeah, he isn't too friendly to look at. He's softer than he seems, though.
  • Familiar: Being Nancy's spotter, he functions as a human version of this, since he is the only one who is able to remember her after she uses her amnesia ability.
  • Giving Up the Ghost: His spirit tries to escape through his mouth when Nancy strangles him after he cannot find a way to prevent Ushio from stealing her witch power.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Like Nancy, he can be kind of a prick at times, but a well-intentioned prick. But unlike her, he isn't afraid to show his soft side.
  • Love Confessor: Implied. He admits to Yamada that he loves Nancy in an attempt to sympathize with Yamada's love for Shiraishi, but it doesn't seem like he has told Nancy herself, given that she seems oblivious to any Dogged Nice Guy actions of his.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The feminine boy to Nancy's masculine girl. He is softer and more submissive than her and shows his feelings more openly.
  • Mr. Exposition: He explains the concept of "spotters" to Yamada.
  • Muggle: He doesn't have any powers. Around his introduction, he was suspected to be a witch-killer because he could still remember Nancy after she used her power, but he is later revealed to be her designated spotter.
  • No Full Name Given: It's never reveals what he's called beyond "Sid".
  • No-Sell: As Nancy's spotter, her memory wipe power has no effect on him. His memory can probably be wiped by other seventh witches, though.
  • Odd Name Out: He is (presumably) Japanese like the others, yet Sid is a very non-Japanese-sounding name.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: It was implied that "Sid" wasn't his real name with how he joined in on Nancy saying "a name is simply a decoration". Actually it's subverted: Sid really is his name, at least according to Nancy. It must just have been a Contrived Coincidence that the girl who nicknames herself Nancy meets a guy called Sid. Due to the way the words are phrased, it is also possible that his name is "Shido", a normal Japanese name with the same pronunciation as "Sid".
  • Psychic Radar: His spotter power makes him able to register the witches' presence and locations from a distance.
  • The Quincy Punk: Like Nancy, he has the style and is something of a rebellious punk.
  • Satellite Character: His role in the story is supporting and helping Nancy, and we don't really know anything else about him.
  • Shout-Out: To Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols, thought to have been an Invoked Trope but just a coincidence in-universe.
  • Slasher Smile: He is often seen with one - his sharp teeth certainly make it easy for him to make that expression - but isn't all that bad of a person.
  • Spiky Hair: And appropriately enough, he is within the punk rock subculture. His hairstyle is quite similar to the one Sid Vicious was known for.
  • Target Spotter: This is one of his purposes as a spotter along with being a human Familiar. He can relay the positions of the witches to Nancy in case that she wants to erase their memories.
  • Tender Tears: While played more for comedy than sympathy, he is among the characters who are most prone to tear up, like when he's hearing a touching story, when he's observing something cool, or when he's talking about his feelings.
  • Tsurime Eyes: He has them mostly to give him a Face of a Thug. His personality is often more like someone with Tareme Eyes, though he can show some arrogance.
  • Villainous Widow's Peak: He has a very prominent widow's peak and seems really sinister during his first appearance. Subverted when it turns out he's a good guy.
  • Yes-Man: He will obey anything Nancy says, partially out of loyalty, partially to fall in better favor with her.

    Mitsuki Ando

Mitsuki Ando

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ando.PNG

A girl from Kotori's neighboring class who stole her notebook and leaks the information throughout the school. Noted to be very similar to Itou.

  • Arc Villain: Of the mini-arc that brings Yamada back to the Supernatural Studies Club after the second memory wipe.
  • Attention Whore: Given how she never stood out in school, Kotori and Shiraishi theorize that she is simply leaking the notebook info to get some attention. They are wrong and right at the same time - she did want some attention, but only from Miyamura.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She has the exact same hairstyle as Itou (just a lighter hair color) and is a bit tomboyish like her.
  • Driven to Suicide: She threatens to kill herself after killing Miyamura for ignoring her, though it's not clear if she was serious or just being overdramatic.
  • Evil Counterpart: She is initially established to be a more obnoxious verson of Itou - though it's subverted when they prove to be Not So Similar.
  • Informed Deformity: Yamada describes her as "the small girl with the slanted eyes", which doesn't make sense as she has the exact same eyes as everybody else.
  • Jerkass: She is introduced as annoying, petty and attention-whoring. At the end, she gets a couple of Pet the Dog moments that show that she at least isn't made of up pure jerkassery.
  • Love Confession: At the end of her arc, she gives one to Miyamura as per Yamada's advice because she was hurt from being ignored by him. He declines, but it still helps her move on.
  • Love Letter Lunacy: She constantly sent love letters to Miyamura when he was president. Yamada, the secretary saw them as suspicious and threw them in the paper shredder, only adding fuel to the fire.
  • Love Makes You Crazy: She is in love with Miyamura, and her petty actions are derived from her unrequited feelings.
  • Motive Rant: She goes through one, including strangling attempts, after Miyamura corners her and tells her that he's aware of what she did.
  • Muggle: She doesn’t have any powers.
  • Not Good with Rejection: She outright tries to strangle Miyamura and claims she wants to commit suicide afterwards, just because he didn’t reciprocate her feelings.
  • Not So Similar: She is introduced as a carbon copy of Itou, and while many of their superficial quirks are indeed very similar, their lives prove to be different. Ando, unlike Itou, has plenty of friends and started rattling about secrets for entirely different reasons.
  • Obsessive Love Letter: Signed her love letters as "The Suzaku Angel, Crimson Seraphim" and wrote rather weird poetry which was seen as creepy by at least Yamada.
  • Pet the Dog: In her last chapter, she apologizes to Kotori and promises to not tell anyone about the witches, showing that she isn't all bad.
  • Put on a Bus: After her mini-arc ends, she has no business left with the main characters and isn't seen for the rest of the series.
  • Remember the New Guy?: She was a member of a volunteer club who helped the student council, meaning that a lot of the main cast probably have seen her or even talked to her before her actual introduction. Though for the sake of plot convenience, Miyamura is the only one who actually remembers her.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: One of many girls who have a huge crush on Miyamura for no obvious reason. This one’s just a tad more crazy about it than the others.
  • Spurned into Suicide: She threatens to do a Murder-Suicide because she believes Miyamura doesn't reciprocate her feelings.
  • The Stool Pigeon: Initially seems to be of the Obnoxious Olivia variety. She has absolutely no problem with stealing a notebook and leaking sensitive information as long as it can get people talking. She is revealed to be the Innocent Ingrid, if still somewhat obnoxious, instead – she just wanted Miyamura to notice her and didn’t think about the consequences of telling people’s secrets out loud.
  • Tearful Smile: She gives Miyamura one after he says no to her asking him out to show that she still likes him and is glad she managed to do it.
  • Yandere: Her freaky love letters and her willingless to kill herself and Miyamura when being ignored by him brings her into this territory.

    Tacchan

Tacchan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tacchan.png
A first-year student who picks on Hikaru until they become Fire-Forged Friends.

He is not known to be a member of any clubs.

  • Age Is Relative: He's presumably the same age as Hikaru (15), but he looks much younger than that. In his case, it's not only that he's Older Than He Looks, but also a device to convey that he's two years younger than the rest of the main cast and thus may look like a child to them.
  • Boisterous Weakling: Despite not having much in the way of physical strength, he'll gladly pick fights with anyone he wants to victimize. It may be explained by his Inferiority Superiority Complex since he knows deep down that he's a weakling.
  • The Bully: He picks on Hikaru, beats him up and humiliates him.
  • Bully Turned Buddy: He becomes friends with Hikaru after he fights against Yamada with Hikaru and is forced to admit his Inferiority Superiority Complex.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Even though he becomes friends with Hikaru at the end of their mini-arc, he is for some reason never seen again.
  • Fat Bastard: He seems mildly obese, and being a bully clearly makes him a bastard.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: After being beaten up by Ryu, Ushio and Noa, he became friends with Hikaru by confessing that he is really weak.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: He acts obnoxious and egoistical, but he really considers himself a weakling and tries to compensate for it with a brash attitude.
  • Jerkass: He's an annoying prick who bullies Hikaru and makes him do ridiculous things, even laughing at him while doing so.
  • Moving the Goalposts: He agrees to stop bullying Hikaru if Hikaru can do him a favor (getting a super-rare yakisoba bread to him from the cantina), expecting that Hikaru won't pull it off. When Hikaru does pull it off, Tacchan just keeps requesting more and more ridiculous and humiliating favors before he will stop his bullying.
  • Muggle: He doesn't have any powers.
  • The Napoleon: He's very short (even shorter than Hikaru) and acts all high and mighty while he thinks the world of himself.
  • Older Than They Look: To an even stronger degree than the Suzuhara twins - his extremely short stature and baby fat makes him look much more like an elementary schooler than a high school freshman.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Has only been referred to as Tacchan.
  • Smug Snake: In his debut, he is very arrogant towards Hikaru.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He is very much like Rin in that he bullies another character and doesn't seem to have any redeeming qualities.
  • Tiny Schoolboy: He's quite possibly the shortest student in the whole school, being clearly shorter than Hikaru who's shorter than Itou who's herself quite short. He also has the temper to compensate for his short height.

    Nakamura

Nakamura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nakamura_appearance.png
A student of class 3-A, was picked by Yamada and Miyamura to be the third in a group to pick for the trip to Guam.

He is not known to be a member of any clubs.

  • Hidden Depths: He looks like a standard computer-obsessed nerd, but his actual interest is, suprisingly, the military, which he wants to visit during the trip to Guam.
  • Muggle: As far as we know, he has no powers.
  • Nerdgasm: His panting and blushing when he gets to see some American combat planes in real life is a clear nod to this trope.
  • Nerds Are Virgins: Well, all characters in this series are virgins, but Nakamura is one big step behind Yamada, Miyamura and the others by virtue of not even having seen a girl's room before.
  • No Full Name Given: Nakamura is presumably his last name — his first name isn't revealed.
  • Opaque Lenses: His eyes cannot be seen through his glasses.
  • Put on a Bus: Since Yamada and Miyamura don't have any meaningful relationship to him and only hung out with him because they had to pick a third boy for their school trip group, he isn't seen again after the Guam arc.
  • The Quiet One: Except for when something piques his interest in American military bases, he's a man of few words.
  • Stereotypical Nerd: He wears opaque glasses, looks scrawny, is interested in nothing but American military bases, and doesn't seem to have much social success given that he had no friends to team up with for the Guam trip and has never seen a girl's room before.
  • Zombie Gait: He walks like this, zombie-like facial expression included, after a whole day of exhausting sightseeing in Guam.

    Hino

Hino

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hino.PNG
A girl Yamada knew at the end of his first year - until they had their memories of each other wiped. They were close friends - though it's not revealed how they met each other - and she was the one who originally set him up with Shiraishi.

She is not known to be a member of any clubs.

  • Camera Fiend: Implied. The one mail Yamada got from her was her sharing a photo with him, and she has a lots of photos of him on her phone, taken in all sorts of situations.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: She disappears off the face of the earth after Yamada uses the time travel power on her and doesn't appear for the rest of the series. She isn't even mentioned when Yamada and Shiraishi recount their memories of their first year, even though she was one of Yamada's best friends in the third term.
  • Does Not Like Men: She originally went to a girls' school (she only started at a co-ed high school because she flunked out of the girls' school), and she is particularly shy and distrustful around guys, blaming Yamada and Miyamura for only wanting to "jump her bones".
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Like all other students Yamada met during his first year, he and Hino have lost their memories of their first meeting.
  • Gender-Concealing Writing: She writes in a way you would associate with a guy, using very blunt phrasings and expressions like "dude" - so Yamada thinks she's a guy when reading her mails and gets a surprise when he actually meets her.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She's generally meek and feminine, but her writing style is very masculine.
  • Hypocritical Humor: She blames Yamada and Miyamura for being filthy and wanting to get in her pants even though the thought hadn't even occurred to them - showing that she's a bigger pervert than either of them, at least in that occasion.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She was in love with Yamada during their first year, but out of gratefulness for his friendship, she set him up with Shiraishi, his true love, instead.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's shown to have a bit of an attitude, like when she replied to Yamada's mails, and when she didn't want to meet up with him in the classroom during their first year, but she's an overall good person.
  • Just Friends: Despite not actually having any way of knowing, Yamada's Gut Feeling makes him insists that he and Hino weren't going out, but were just close friends.
  • Muggle: She doesn't have any powers.
  • Mysterious Past: Except that she knew Yamada at the end of their first year, was close to him, and helped him get together with Shiraishi, very little is known about her background or their shared past. Given that she wasn't mentioned when Yamada and Shiraishi recounted the lost memories, she probably didn't play a bigger role than simply being a friend, but how she met Yamada will always remain a mystery.
  • No Full Name Given: Her first name isn't known.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: One of the few female characters who has hair covering her ears instead of the signature Yoshikawa hairstyle of "exposed ears, hair locks in front of ears".
  • Prone to Tears: She is nervous and easily scared during her amnesia phase which makes her tear up easily.
  • Shoo Out the New Guy: She's introduced as a really important character, being someone Yamada knew during the second part of his forgotten past, but she's actually only around for half a dozen chapters after which she is never seen again, and it turns out she didn't do much more than help set up Yamada with Shiraishi. It didn't help her case that role-wise, she is practically a clone of Himekawa, being a girl who helps Yamada out of loneliness by befriending him, falls in love with him, and then stops seeing him after he unwittingly breaks her heart, but with the negative difference that Himekawa's personality and friendship with Yamada is fleshed out much more than Hino's equivalent.
  • Shrinking Violet: She is quite shy and nervous.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: For someone who is a shy girl and generally talks like a shy girl, she sure has no problem switching to a blunt, masculine writing style on mail.
  • "Take That!" Kiss: Her past self gives one to present!Yamada to show that she's so infuriated with him that he isn't even worth fighting over a kiss with.
  • Used to Be More Social: It’s justified since she and her friends lost their memories of each other, but it's noteworthy that she is shy and mostly alone in the present day even though she had several friends and seemed quite outgoing in her first year.
  • Walking Spoiler: Since her only role is being "that girl from Yamada's first year", it's impossible to discuss her without discussing Yamada's hidden memories.
  • Wistful Amnesia: Despite not actually remembering Yamada, she spends all day looking at her phone on which she has a lot of photos of him, and in a similar way to Shiraishi and Yamazaki, she starts crying when he wants to kiss her - because she used to be in love with him and felt scorned by him.
  • Woman Scorned: A milder case than many, but she still goes mental when she thinks that Yamada is playing her feelings by having her set him up with Shiraishi and then apparently cheating on Shiraishi afterwards, slapping him and calling him all sorts of names.

    Amamiya

Amamiya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amamiya.PNG
The student council president when Yamada started Suzaku (though she was replaced by Yamazaki at the middle of the school year).
  • Anti-Villain: While coming off as evil when she first appears, she isn't really, though she is still antagonistic because she is behind the memory wipe.
  • Big Bad: Of both Yamada's and Leona's flashbacks, given that she was the one who noticed that Yamada, Himekawa, Nancy, Leona, and Yamazaki all were trying to start a ceremony, and sent Rika to wipe the memories.
  • Custom Uniform: She wears tights instead of knee socks, and she doesn't wear the obligatory ribbon of the girls' uniform. Justified since the student council president is the highest authority of the school, so no-one can object to her not following the dress code.
  • Finger-Lickin' Evil: She has long, dark-painted fingernails, and she can be seen licking them at her first appearance while giving off an evil glare.
  • Gender-Concealing Writing: Before her first appearance, she's only ever mentioned as "the former president" with no gendered pronouns attached, but since all of the other known student council presidents were or are male, it's a bit of a surprise that she turns out to be a girl.
  • Muggle: She doesn't have any powers, though as the student council president, she can designate a new original witch.
  • No Full Name Given: Her first name isn't known.
  • Not So Stoic: She acts like a typical stoic villain during Yamada's flashback, but in Shiraishi's flashback she is shown to be fully able of having comical reactions.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: In what may be an attempt to look refined as a student council president, she wears tights instead of the standard knee socks of the Suzaku girls' uniform.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She only appears in maybe a dozen panels, but she pretty much instigates the plot of the series by designating Shiraishi as the original witch, and she plays a similar instigator role in the second witch war by having Rika wipe the memories of the witch researchers.
  • Student Council President: Another one of these and the first one during Yamada's high school life to boot.
  • Tsurime Eyes: She has them and is a self-confident and calculating authority figure.
  • Unseen No More: She is given several blink-and-you'll-miss-them mentions since the very start of the series (though she's only mentioned as "the former president", not by her name or gender), but doesn't appear in person until Yamada's flashback in the second witch war.
  • Younger than She Looks: As a third year student, she is 17 or 18 at her introduction, but looks older than that because of her dress style and her authoritarian demeanor.
