A more radical group of mutants than those from the Xavier School, these mutants stand for a world where their kind reigns supreme and humanity acknowledges their superiority. Led by Erik "Magneto" Lehnsherr, they are unafraid of using violence and conflict to achieve their goal of mutant domination.

A Holocaust survivor, he and Xavier were once friends, and they built Cerebro together. However, his belief that humans and mutants could never co-exist led to their separation. Guided by the suffering he had endured as a Jewish youth in 1940s Germany, his commitment to his fellow kind is that he will never let humanity wrong them as he was and will defend mutantkind to any end no matter how horrific. He has powerful magnetic abilities and a sophisticated knowledge in matters of genetic manipulation
- Adaptation Dye-Job: In the comics, he has been shown to have had white hair for the vast majority of his adult life, presumably as a side-effect of his mutation. In the films, he's introduced with grey hair (though only because, lacking Comic Book Time, the screenwriters had to make him the realistic age of a Holocaust survivor) and he has dark brown hair as a younger man in the prequels.
- Affably Evil: With Xavier. They still play chess games together a good 40 years into their conflict with each other. Hell, if you are on his side, he is rather chatty and friendly to you.
- Antagonist in Mourning: In X-Men: The Last Stand, he sincerely grieves over Xavier's death and cuts off his Dragon Pyro's irreverent talk about the deceased abruptly. As in most versions of X-Men, he and Xavier were very close friends who eventually found themselves on separate sides due to their ideological differences.
- Anti-Hero: An Unscrupulous Hero in X-Men: First Class and a Nominal Hero in X2: X-Men United.
- Anti-Villain: Has an unquestionably sympathetic backstory and very good reason to believe that humans are out to eradicate the mutant race. However, he is a dangerous individual with few limits on his devotion and what must be done to ensure the survival of his kind. Even his best and oldest friend isn't safe from his extreme methods and beliefs.
- The Atoner: His older self in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
- Badass: Consistently shown as one of the most powerful and dangerous mutants in the films. His control over metal makes pretty much any standard army helpless against him, and he can exert some limited control over a person's limbs by manipulating metal objects they're wearing. This is also aside from his considerable intellect and knack for strategic planning. In X-Men: First Class, he spends the whole first act hunting down and wiping out former Nazis
- Badass Baritone: Both Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender pull this off.
- Badass Cape: As part of his supervillain outfit.
- Badass Grandpa: In the original trilogy, he's somewhere in his 70's or 80's, but he can still kick your ass substantially. In X-Men: Days of Future Past, as a Holocaust survivor living in 2023, he is, at the very least, in his late eighties/early nineties (X-Men: First Class portrayed him as being around ten in 1944). He still lifts the X-Jet and hurls it at a horde of incoming Sentinels like it's a child's toy, takes a piece of shrapnel to the gut and slightly-less-than-casually pulls it out, and still uses the remaining wreckage to further barricade the path to Kitty and Wolverine.
- Big Bad: Of X-Men, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
- Big Bad Ensemble: His younger self is this in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
- Big Good: His older-self shares the role with Charles Xavier in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
- Byronic Hero: In X-Men: First Class — morally troubled, emotionally damaged, attractive, and very charismatic about his pro-mutant beliefs. Particularly to some of the impressionable younger characters like Mystique.
- Cool Helmet: At times even horny.
- Cultured Badass: He speaks several languages, passionately discusses philosophy, shows considerable knowledge of politics and foreign cultures, and enjoys the occasional game of chess with Xavier.
- Dark and Troubled Past: "Holocaust survivor" is about as dark and troubled as it gets.
- Dark Messiah: In X-Men: Days of Future Past, his younger self prepares to kill Nixon while declaring mutant supremacy in front of a live broadcast.
- Deadpan Snarker: The biggest one, natch. X2: X-Men United is largely his snark-fest at everyone's expense.
Erik: Honestly Charles, I don't know how you survived living in such hardship.
- In the original X-Men, he just can't help but point out Scott's at-times apparent stupidity. Such as when they were all trapped and bound by him within the Statue of Liberty.
Cyclops: Storm, fry him!
Magneto: Oh yes. A bolt of lightning into a huge copper conductor. I thought you lived at a school.
- He also really enjoys mocking Wolverine in general.
- Determinator: He'll do what it takes to finish his mission and some old businesses.
- Doesn't Like Guns: His younger self uses guns when he needs to, while the older Magneto sneers at them. This is partly because of his background as a holocaust survivor, and partly because humans rely on guns to fight, and he sees it as a sign of their inferiority. Of course, that's a bit hypocritical when he has the power of magnetism, and those who don't possess such an advantage have to defend themselves somehow.
- Do Unto Others Before They Do Unto Us: His motive in almost every movie.
- Emotional Powers: In X-Men: First Class, he is originally only able to use his powers when extremely angry. The first two times, it involves maternal separation. However, he can't properly focus it until Charles coaches him to concentrate on happier emotions.
- Enemy Mine:
- In X2: X-Men United, he and Mystique team-up with the X-Men to stop a human villain from killing all mutants. Right up until he decides to invert the attack and have all the non-Mutants killed instead.
- In X-Men: Days of Future Past he and Xavier unite against the Sentinels that threaten all of mutantkind with extinction. Although he ends up attempting his own plans for mutant superiority and, ironically enough, winds up jeopardizing the plan to save mutantkind.
- Evil Former Friend: Naturally while remaining on Friendly Enemy terms with Charles Xavier, the X-Men and Brotherhood are at great conflict in the majority of films regardless.
- Evil Genius: With truly amazing schemes. In X-Men: Days of Future Past, he was able to steal a file containing the details of the Sentinels, after reading it over he was somehow able to reprogram them while inserting metal tracks within the bodies.
- Extra Ore Dinary: His impressive mutant ability to control metal. Guns are a joke to him and throughout the films he's accomplished feats capable of lifting a submarine from water, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the RFK Stadium.
- Fantastic Radiation Shielding: His helmet protects him from various mutants' psychic powers.
- Faux Affably Evil: If you aren't on his side, he can be downright terrifying and still sound unfailingly polite. When Pyro expresses disappointment that he wasn't the one to kill Professor X, Magneto gives him a rather grandfatherly talking-to...with an unspoken, but very real assurance that the next ill words Pyro speaks of Charles Xavier would be his last.
- First Name Basis: In the films, just like in the comics, he and Charles Xavier always use their first names when speaking to or about each other. Only a handful of others are on a first-name basis with them.
- In X-Men: Days of Future Past, while the public and most other characters refer to him and Raven (Mystique) by their mutant code names, Charles and Hank still remain on a first name basis with both of them, and vice versa. This is also presumably true for Alex, who still addresses his former ally as Erik.
- Freudian Excuse: A former victim of the Holocaust.
- Friendly Enemy: To Charles Xavier.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners:
- Considering that his and Charles' friendship only lasted a few months in X-Men: First Class, it was unusually intimate on an emotional level.
- Played straight in X-Men: Days of Future Past, with his older self and Professor X (the moment where they're holding hands is the closest that we've seen them since First Class), but averted with their younger selves. In 1973, Charles never once calls him "friend" (although Erik uses the endearment twice), which goes to show how broken their relationship is.
- He Who Fights Monsters: In X-Men: First Class, he hates Shaw and wants to kill him, but he eventually embraces Shaw's beliefs about mutant supremacy. It's even spelled out through the villain wearing the same helmet that Magneto is associated with.
- Justified at the crucial moment because he separates revenge from his ideals, which is why he's able to compliment Shaw's vision while still hating the man to his core. Shaw the man wronged him terribly, but Shaw the visionary is inspirational.
- Humans Are Bastards: Believing humans will continue to grow and despise mutants he maintains this belief. Though it doesn't really help his case when he keeps doing actions that make people fear him.
- Hypocrite: Despite claiming to help his fellow mutants, Magneto has no qualms on attacking and even killing other mutants who stand in the way of his anti-human crusade.
- In X-Men, he is willing to sacrifice Rogue but not himself in the advancement of his cause. Beautifully called out by Wolverine, who tells him: "You're so full of shit. If you were really so righteous, it would be you up in that thing." The biggest irony of that is, if he had been willing to sacrifice himself, the plan would have worked.
- At the climax of X-Men: Days of Future Past, his past-self has his most blatant moment of hypocrisy in the entire film series. After all the bravado both before and after about protecting mutantkind, he deliberately pits a Sentinel against Wolverine and Beast, ordering it to "do what you were made for."
- In the plane, he calls Xavier out for abandoning the mutants out there to be killed or experimented on. Given how X-Men: First Class ends, Xavier can reasonably say that Beast, Havok, Banshee and himself (who was newly shot in the spine) could have easily ended up as guinea pigs for either the US or the Soviet Union because Magneto left them stranded in Cuba with no transportation.
- Icy Blue Eyes: His eyes are quite a striking blue.
- I Was Quite a Looker: He was a classic example of Tall, Dark and Handsome when he was a young man (and he has aged gracefully over the years).
- Just The Way You Are: In X-Men: First Class, he is able to persuade Raven to his side with this trope, and finds her mutant appearance to be "perfection" in contrast to Charles and Hank, who feel she should look more "normal" to gain acceptance within society.
- Kick the Son of a Bitch: Some of his victims include Nazis, Sebastian Shaw and the corrupt, violent slob in charge of his prison cell. He also chained William Stryker back up and left him to die at the end of X2: X-Men United.
- Knight Templar: Wants to stop mutant prejudice... by subjugating humans.
- Loner-Turned-Friend: In X-Men: First Class when he met Charles Xavier and his group.
- Made of Iron: His younger self is quite capable of taking a beating. In X-Men: First Class he was being thrown across a room by Shaw crashing into mirrors. In X-Men: Days of Future Past, he took head injuries from Beast and nearly drowned before restraining him only needing a head stitching after. His older self also survived a blast from Cyclops in the first film, and in X-Men: Days of Future Past continued to protect the group from the Sentinels with a shard having pierced his abdomen.
- Man in White:
- Manipulative Bastard: Best demonstrated as he convinces Pyro to defect to his side.
- My God, What Have I Done?: X-Men: The Last Stand features him saying the line, when he finds himself on the other side of the Mutants vs. Humans war he's been pushing for, and Phoenix finally goes crazy and starts killing people.
- My Greatest Failure: The death of Xavier in X-Men: The Last Stand, which he directly caused by awakening Dark Phoenix.
Magneto: Charles Xavier did more for mutants than you'll ever know. My single greatest regret is that he had to die for our dream to live.
- Nazi Hunter: He spends the first twenty minutes or so of his screentime in X-Men: First Class tracking down and killing Nazis. In fact, his reason for joining the X-Men is so that he can find and kill Sebastian Shaw, the mutant Nazi who killed his mother.
- Never Be Hurt Again: He is both a Holocaust Survivor and mutant "lab rat" which pushes him towards Do Unto Others Before They Do Unto Us regarding mutant suppression by the humans.
- Not So Different: From the very people he hates (the Nazis, Shaw, etc).
- In X-Men: First Class, when he confronts the villain Sebastian Shaw at the end:
- Later when Xavier is shot and Erik/Magneto is speaking to him, the following conversation takes place:
Erik Lehnsherr: Us turning on each other, it's what they want. I tried to warn you, Charles. I want you by my side. We're brothers, you and I. All of us together, protecting each other. We want the same thing.
Charles Xavier: Oh, my friend, I'm sorry, but we do not.
- And in X2: X-Men United, the first thing he does when he gets inside the second Cerebro? Instructs Jason Stryker to simply reverse the polarity on Professor X's mental attack to target humans instead of mutants rather than free Charles from Jason's mind control.
- Parental Abandonment: Father probably killed in concentration camp, mother definitely killed before him by Shaw to try and induce his magnetism powers.
- Power Floats: Can fly by manipulating the Earth's magnetic field.
- Protagonist Journey to Villain: X-Men: First Class revolves around him seeking revenge for the murder of his mother and his increasing acceptance of mutant supremacy.
- Psycho Strings: Part of his Leitmotif in X-Men: First Class.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: In X-Men: First Class, his initial mission was to hunt down and kill Shaw and his Nazi underlings.
- Slave Brand: The tattoo number of a Nazi concentration camp he carries upon his forearm, which he has brought attention towards to serve as a reminder for human cruelty.
- Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: You could call the trope: Xavier vs. Magneto.
- Slowly Slipping Into Evil:
- In X-Men: First Class; he is a really good and interesting example in that he starts the movie already as an Anti-Hero and spends most of the movie establishing his attitude that would cause him to slip into evil before he actually does so. And while he's undeniably a Jerk Ass in opposition to the heroes by the end of the movie, he still isn't evil and never really crosses the Moral Event Horizon.
- Within 11 years between X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, he became involved with the JFK assassination and launched an attack against the White House.
- Start of Darkness/Villain Protagonist: In X-Men: First Class.
- Stealth Pun: Michael Fassbender kept his natural auburn hair for the role in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, which makes him... Erik the Red.note
- Super Reflexes: In X-Men: First Class, he's fairly confident he can stop a bullet shot point blank from his head. Later, he more or less holds true to his claim by stopping a horde of missiles fired by the US and Russian army within several feet from the air to him.
- Tailor-Made Prison:
- At the end of X-Men, Magneto is locked in a cell made entirely of plastic. He got out in X2: X-Men United, thanks to Mystique giving one of his guards an "iron supplement," actually at least half a pound of the stuff, in liquid form. In real life, this would have given him iron poisoning, but he didn't survive long enough to find that out.
- Subverted in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The concrete cell under the Pentagon was not built specifically for him, but simply constructed that way because steel was being rationed at the time. It still holds him quite well, though.
- Tall, Dark and Handsome: In his youth, as shown in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
- Team Dad: In X-Men: First Class, which made his Face-Heel Turn that much more tragic.
- Time-Shifted Actor: He has been portrayed by four actors in three note different stages of his life.
- Tranquil Fury: In X-Men: First Class, his powers are manifested through anger, until Charles helps by telling him "true focus lies somewhere between rage and serenity."
- Troubled, but Cute: In X-Men: First Class, pre-supervillainy, he is a Badass Nazi-hunting Byronic Hero with an intensely Dark and Troubled Past (involving the Holocaust, loss of his parents, and being a victim of human experimentation) and bucketloads of trauma and cynicism. He also wears a leather jacket on a few occasions.
- Visionary Villain: He wants to create a world safe for mutants by any means necessary.
- We Used to Be Friends: The whole premise of X-Men: First Class is to show how he and Charles Xavier became friends and then ended up on opposite sides with different ideals.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: He has always been the archetypal example in comics and the films faithfully live up to that.
- His plan in X-Men, is actually rather benevolent and would finally end the division between Mutants and the rest of Mankind, while sacrificing only Rogue to make it work. It's a good plan, it's just a shame his machine doesn't work!
- What the Hell Are You?: In X-Men: First Class, we have the following conversation:
- What the Hell, Hero?: In X-Men: Days of Future Past, his past self goes into an outburst about how fellow mutants were being killed left and right while Young Charles has been in hiding with Hank.
Erik: Angel, Azazel, Emma, Banshee. Mutant brothers and sisters, all dead! Countless others, experimented on! Butchered! Where were you, Charles?! We were supposed to protect them! Where were you when your own people needed you?! Hiding! You and Hank! Pretending to be something you're not! You abandoned us all!
- Wicked Cultured: Mags always enjoy a good game of chess with Xavier or listening to classical music.
- Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Holocaust survivor. Extremist willing to kill lots of people. Highlighted in X-Men: First Class.
- Worthy Opponent: He and Xavier have this relationship.
Magneto: Charles Xavier did more for mutants than you will ever know. My single greatest regret is that he had to die for our dream to live.
- You Are Number Six: In X-Men: First Class, he outs himself as a holocaust survivor to some Nazis he was amicably chatting with (and planning to kill). When they asked for the names of his parents, being from the same town, he answered that they "had no names—they were stolen from them" before showing his own concentration camp number. Violence ensues.
- You Are What You Hate: He hates Nazis due to being a survivor of the Holocaust, but ultimately embraces racism against non-mutants, this is highlighted in X-Men: First Class.
- You Killed My Father: In X-Men: First Class, when he kills Schmitt/Shaw despite agreeing with his Mutant Supremacist ideals because Schmitt killed his mother in front of him as a child.
Magneto: I want you to know I agree with everything you just said. We are the future. But, unfortunately... you killed my mother.

Magneto's loyal second-in-command, her mutant ability to alter her shape and mimic any human being is almost secondary to her role as "the perfect soldier". She is an agile fighter, expert martial artist, and seems completely facile with respect to modern technology.
- Adaptational Heroism: In both X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past she is given a very realistic and sympathetic motivation for her Start of Darkness moment, in contrast to her depiction in the comics. In fact, the latter movie goes so far as to establish that prior to killing Bolivar Trask, she'd never taken a single life during one of her crimes. And additionally, she pulls a Heel-Face Turn and not only spares Trask, but rescues the president from Magneto during the climax. Presumably this negates her role as a villain in the original X-Men trilogy via Cosmic Retcon.
- Age Is Relative: X-Men: First Class does this in many ways with her. She is about as old as Xavier. But as a shapeshifter, she chooses to look younger, and she prefers to stay with the teenage recruits. And according to Hank, her body ages slower.
- Anti-Hero: A Classical Anti-Hero in X-Men: First Class and a Nominal Hero in X2: X-Men United and in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
- Badass: She gets into almost as many fights as Wolverine, and always comes out on top.
- Barbie Doll Anatomy: Is completely naked, but doesn't have any "attributes" to speak of.
- Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Implied in the backstory told in X-Men: Days of Future Past. After assassinating Trask to avenge her fellow mutants, she is taken captive and experimented on, with her DNA being used to create the Bad Future Sentinels. The experience likely resulted in her transformation into the remorseless killer we see in the original trilogy.
- Best Her to Bed Her: Mystique tries to seduce Logan/Wolverine in X2: X-Men United because he defeated her in combat in X-Men, complimenting him that "nobody ever left quite a scar like you did". Logan is not interested. Later films show that Mystique is capable of having loving, if not necessarily intimate, relationships with other mutants even if they didn't actually beat her (Charles Xavier, Magneto).
- Big Bad Ensemble: For X-Men: Days of Future Past, opposite Bolivar Trask.
- Blond Brunette Redhead: She loves disguising herself as a blond. Her mutant form has red hair. When de-powered, she has raven hair.
- Chickification: An odd variant happens with her in X-Men: First Class. Fans familiar with the character in the original trilogy (which First Class establishes loose continuity with) will probably find it jarring that she goes from being The Dragon to Magneto and a Dark Action Girl to being an awkward if Adorkable girl. Given that the movie is a prequel and that there are certain scenes (for example, her bench pressing an impressive amount of weight), it's likely it's being set up for future badassery.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: She wasn't too fond of seeing Charles hit on other women in a pub in X-Men: First Class.
- Cute Monster Girl: As a little girl when Charles first meets her in X-Men: First Class.
- Dark Action Girl: One that's not ashamed to kick lots of ass.
- Does Not Like Shoes: As she's always nude, she's always barefoot too. Extra badassery points go to her for going to Stryker's compound at Alkali Lake nude and barefoot (a frozen lake and covered in snow).
- Do Not Call Me Paul: In X-Men: The Last Stand, when an official calls her Raven, she responds: "I don't answer to my slave name."
- The Dragon: To Magneto.
- Enemy Mine: Fights along the X-Men in X2: X-Men United.
- Everyone Loves Blondes: She really loves to take the form of a very sexy blond (e.g. Rebecca Romjin and Jennifer Lawrence).
- Evil Redhead: In her true form. Until she's cured, that is.
- Face-Heel Turn: In X-Men: First Class. Starts off Xavier's friend and adoptive sister, ends up leaving to be with Magneto. Of course, she sees it differently. And once Magneto is imprisoned, she embraces the heel without shame.
- Heel-Face Turn: In X-Men: Days of Future Past, she eventually decides to give up her vendetta against Trask to prevent future bloodshed against Mutants. She also saves Nixon and his cabinet from Magneto.
- Fiery Redhead: Given it's her natural color - in mutant form. After she's "cured", her natural hair color is raven black.
- Full-Frontal Assault:
- She is always naked. This makes sense from a sci-fi point of view since her mutation only affects her own body and it works in a sort of reptile-chameleon sort of way, so wearing clothes would simply at the very least be impractical, the 'clothes' she appears to wear are actually a part of her body; she describes taking off these 'clothes' feels like in much the same way a snake sheds its skin.
- She appears to form perhaps the basis for the mindset of walking around completely without clothing especially in her natural form throughout X-Men: First Class. When Erik Lensherr tell her that her natural form is beautiful and demonstrates by dropping a barbell on her that it takes more concentration to maintain a fake form to conceal her true appearance than fighting in her natural form and concentrating completely on fighting would and when she tells Hank Mcoy at the end, "Remember Hank, Mutant and proud." right after joining Magneto.
- I Am What I Am: From X-Men: First Class, "Mutant and proud".
- Made of Iron: As her fight with Wolverine handily demonstrates.
- Marquee Alter Ego:
- She is played by world famous supermodel Rebecca Romijn, and has the power to take any form. She had at least one "cameo" per movie without make-up.
- in X-Men: First Class, she is now played by Jennifer Lawrence and spends more time in human guise than in her blue skinned form.
- Meaningful Name: When de-powered in X-Men: The Last Stand, she's seen with Raven Hair, Ivory Skin.
- Monster Modesty: You can see scales over her nipples and pelvis.
- Ms. Fanservice: Aside from being naked most of the time, she uses seductive alternate forms.
- Non Humans Lack Attributes: Despite being human, she is decent even while naked. This might be part of her shapeshifting (seeing as how she can look like she's wearing clothes too). Rebecca Romijn even lampshaded this by commenting that her character's costume was "strategically placed body paint, pasties, and clever camera angles".
- Older than They Look: She qualifies as an extreme example, being played by Rebecca Romijn despite being only a few years younger than Magento and Xavier. Justified by her ability to shapeshift (why age if you never have to?) and a comment made in X-Men: First Class about her mutation slowing her aging.
- Shapeshifter Baggage: The first two movies averted this by having her only transforming into adults (or in one case, an adult-sized Statue of Liberty model). Then the third had her briefly becoming a child, and in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the small Bolivar Trask.
- Shapeshifter Weapon: She did this in X-Men with Wolverine's claws (which failed miserably against the real ones).
- Shapeshifting Seducer: She uses this several times in the films.
- In X2: X-Men United, she seduces a guard by taking the form of a hot blonde so she can use him in Magneto's escape from prison. She later uses it on Logan by trying to seduce him in the form of Jean Grey. Logan catches her, and she goes through several other forms, including Storm, Rogue and even Stryker, but he tells her to leave.
- In X-Men: First Class, she upgrades her age about 15 years to please Magneto, which doesn't really work for her until Magneto tells her he prefers her without the shapeshifted appearance.
- She-Fu: Acrobatic, prefers hand-to-hand (kicks in particular), and even slides.
- She's Got Legs: Her seduction of a prison guard in X2: X-Men United shows it clearly.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: In X-Men: Days of Future Past, ten years after X-Men: First Class, she and Charles have not only become estranged but also polar opposites in almost every way, especially in regards to ideology and diplomacy. Her sparing of Trask and the president shows that she isn't quite as far gone as originally believed, though.
- Start of Darkness: X-Men: First Class depicts her as an insecure young woman looking for a purpose...And she finds it. Taken even further in X-Men: Days of Future Past, where she effectively becomes a Dark Action Girl. Xavier even states that her first deliberate murder of Bolivar Trask in the original timeline "is when Raven became Mystique".
- Statuesque Stunner: In the original trilogy, where she's 5' 11" (1.80 m). While young Mystique is not that much, Jennifer Lawrence's 5' 9" (1.75 m) makes only slightly shorter than Magneto.
- Time-Shifted Actor: Played by Rebecca Romjin in the original trilogy; her younger self is portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence. Morgan Lily plays her child self.
- Took a Level in Badass: In comparison to X-Men: First Class where her only physical scenes involve weight training and her shape-changing abilities used only as a distraction to aid someone else, in X-Men: Days of Future Past she has developed into using some of the acrobatic fighting style that her older counterpart from the first trilogy excels at.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: Between First Class/Days of Future Past and the original trilogy, her personality...changed quite a bit. In fact, she's downright a mean bitch in the trilogy. Maybe the "scientific experiments" she went through after killing Trask had something to do with it. This is possibly undone, however, thanks to the Cosmic Retcon at the end of Days Of Future Past.
- Tranquil Fury: It must've rubbed off from being with Magneto but throughout most of X-Men: Days of Future Past, she is searing with rage and on her way to becoming the remorseless killer she was in the original trilogy. Until the end where she spares Trask's life and thus creates a new timeline.
- Unholy Matrimony: With Magneto. However, it is thoroughly broken by X-Men: Days of Future Past, where she and Magneto try to kill one another.
- Unlucky Childhood Friend: For Xavier in X-Men: First Class. Xavier does a lot of flirting with other women, and she is clearly jealous. It's hard to tell whether she actually had strong romantic feelings for him, or if she just wants to establish that she's worthy of romantic interest, but either way he says that he can't see her as anything but a sister and someone to protect.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Along with Magneto.
- Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: In many ways, given she's so sneaky that can change to regular white eyes.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Downplayed. In X-Men: The Last Stand, Magneto leaves her behind when her mutation is removed and genuinely feels bad about it. She repays him in kind by working against him.
- It makes a bit more sense when you consider the original ending of the movie. When Magneto is at the park bench at the end, she was supposed to be sitting next to him, implying that Magneto's rejection of her and her subsequent betrayal were both actually staged to lower the defenses of Alcatraz Island later.

- Bright Is Not Good: His skin is vivid red.
- Bus Crash: Mystique discovers that Azazel died (and his body was used in experiments by Trask) during the Time Skip between X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
- Combat Pragmatist: His initial tactic when breaching the CIA compound is simply teleport next to an enemy, grab hold of him, teleport himself and his target hundreds of feet into the air, let go of his target and teleport away, letting gravity do the rest.
- Evil Counterpart: To Nightcrawler, despite the two not appearing in the same film. Their powers are identical and they have similar physical appearances. His name is also the same as Nightcrawler's biological father in the source material. - Even Evil Has Standards: Sort of. When she defected and witnessed Shaw's brutal murder of Darwin, she was briefly shown to be shocked and somewhat disturbed at what he did.
- Face-Heel Turn: She joins the Hellfire Club when Shaw kills every human in the CIA building.
- Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Subverted. She's friendly with the rest of the group, but is the first to join Shaw (albeit for morally ambiguous reasons).
- Killed Off Screen: The Viral Marketing for X-Men: Days of Future Past reveals she and Azazel were shot by the CIA between X-Men: First Class and the JFK assassination. In the actual movie, Magneto lists her among some mutants who died. Later her wings are seen stored in a government vault.

Born in the mid-1800s, he and Logan are half-brothers (back when Logan went by his real name, James Howlett) and helped him escape after Logan's mutations emerged and he killed his biological father. He and Logan became soldiers throughout history but the constant combat turned Victor into a bloodthirsty sociopath.
- Arch-Enemy: To Wolverine.
- Ax-Crazy: Has a bloodlust that only mindless battle seems to satisfy.
- Badass Beard: How else can he compare to Wolverine?
- Badass Longcoat: He sports one in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

- Bash Brothers: He and Logan do this for the first fifteen minutes of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The opening sequence is a Badass Montage through The American Civil War, WW1, WW2 and The Vietnam War! They also come back together briefly at the end, albeit for a mutual gain.
- Beast Man: In X-Men Origins: Wolverine he has claw-like fingernails, fangs instead of canines, and by X-Men he's basically an animal.
- Big Brother Bully: Once he's required to fight Logan in Origins.
- Big Brother Instinct: For all his (many) flaws, he really loves his little brother Jimmy. It's best illustrated in the Civil War part of the opening montage, when Logan is shot and they are (at the time) unaware of their healing factors, Victor's expression says it all.

- Adaptational Attractiveness: He◊ is a short, ugly little hunchback in the comics. In X-Men, he's played by Ray Park◊ with some very half-hearted attempts at uglying him up. However, in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the younger Toad has many more noticeable bumps and wrinkles on his face.
- Adaptational Badass: In the comics, he was originally conceived as a deformed, sniveling hunchback who served as The Igor to Magneto. His super power was he could hop... really high because of having very low-grade super-strength, concentrated in his legs. However in X-Men, stuntman Ray Park played him as a wisecracking martial artist with wall-crawling abilities and a tongue that he could use as a whip, thus making him more capable of holding his own in a fight with other heroes. Also, he could spit slime projectiles. Then again, considering that Ray Park once played as that red-skinned badass Sith, his badassery has to be expected.
- Black Eyes of Evil: The irises are so big they look black from a distance.

Back when she was a little girl, Jean Grey was visited by both Erik Lehnsherr and Charles Xavier, both wanting to learn to her the use of her powers for their respective goals.
Fearing that Jean could not control her vast psychic powers, Charles Xavier put psychic blocks around her subconscious mind to keep Jean's abilities in check. As a result while growing up, Jean developed a dual personality - one being her usual self and the other her vastly strong, powerful, and uninhibited side that called itself the Phoenix Force, which emerged when she was angry or enraged.
In X-Men: The Last Stand
, after apparently killed Cyclops and Professor X with her newly strengthened and enhanced telekinesis due to cannot control her power or herself, she joined Magneto's brotherhood. As she senses the Phoenix taking over, she asks Wolverine twice to kill her. The second time, the request is fulfilled.

- Composite Character: She merges the powers of the comic characters Caliban and Quicksilver. Her leadership role and personality (which isn't all that fleshed out in the movie, but overall it's pretty consistent with the comics) are the only traces of the comics' Callisto.
- Dark Action Girl: Basically Magneto's replacement for Mystique.
- Designated Girl Fight: Storm gets a rivalry with her, fighting her on two occasions. However, this has less to do with them both being female than a nod to their complex relationship in the comics.

A mutant who can eject spikes from his body, most notably his face.
- Deadly Hug: He kills Dr. Rao by hugging her and then extending his spikes.
- Joke Character: See his picture? That's his sole power. Can't even fire them off as projectiles. He can only kill people if he can manage to hug them first. This is especially true considering he's on the same team with people like Magneto and Dark Phoenix.
- Knight Templar: Like the rest of the Omegas.
- Mauve Shirt: Lasts quite a bit, kills one character and almost does so with a second.
- Small Name, Big Ego: He genuinely think he's threatening to Magneto at the gathering of mutants when he extends his quills. His sole kill in X-Men: The Last Stand is killing a single, crying woman by giving her a hug then extending his quills. Then he gets killed in an action that could be charitably called an afterthought.
- Spikes Of Doom: In a porcupine way.
- Tattooed Crook: Like most Omegas, he has many tattoos.
- This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: His only kill in X-Men: The Last Stand was Kavita Rao (the scientist who developed the mutant "cure") whom he hugged, then deployed his quills.

- Adaptational Villainy: She is associated with the X-Men in the comics, but in X-Men: The Last Stand, she appears members of Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants.
- Oddly, this character might not be intended to be Psylocke initially. In fact, her actress originally thought she potrayed Revanche / Kwannon. According to screenwriter Zack Penn, "There was some switching of character names later in production, and I'm not exactly sure how Psylocke got thrown into the mix." So it is assumed by fans that the character was intended to be Revanche and could be called Revanche in later movies.
- Demoted to Extra: Usually has a fair amount of input on the plot in the comics.
- Knight Templar: Like the other Omegas.
- Mauve Shirt: Appears for a bit, though mostly in the background, before turning into Ludicrous Gibs. However.....
- Not Quite Dead: ...the novelization confirms that she survived Phoenix's attack by transporting through the shadows in the hallway.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: Like the other Omegas, who want mutant rights but have crossed the line into mutant superiority.
The Hellfire Club
A group of mutants who existed in the 1960s, led by Sebastian Shaw. Their objective is to secretly incite a war amidst the world's nuclear powers and then claim the ashes in the name of mutantkind. Chronologically, the group serves as the very first antagonistic group in the film series. Indirectly, the group also serves as predecessor for Magneto's Brotherhood because of its similar goal: mutant supremacy.
Its leader is Sebastian Shaw. The core members are Emma Frost, Azazel, and Riptide; with Angel Salvadore becomes its newcomer after Shaw killed Darwin. After Magneto killed Shaw, all four of them join Magneto's Brotherhood.

A former Nazi scientist and the leader of the Hellfire Club, a secret society bent on taking over the world. He has the power of absorbing and redirecting kinetic and radiated energy.
- The Ageless: His energy-absorbing powers keep him young... somehow.
- Alliterative Name: Sebastian Shaw.
- Ape Shall Never Kill Ape: He lightly scolds Emma, after she punts Erik off their yacht, that, "We don't hurt our own kind." Later, however, he kills Darwin, and his team later go all-out to hurt/kill the X-Men; and of course, he beats up Erik on the sub, while trying to convince him to change sides.
- Badass: He is virtually immortal and likes to show this off, guy takes a missile to the face and doesn't even blink. Needless to say, this makes him badass in the extreme.
- Diabolical Mastermind: (Mutant powers aside) he wouldn't be terribly out of place as a James Bond villain.
- Energy Absorption: Any energy, even the kinetic force propelling bullets, is something he can fully absorb into his body, and it is stated that this is how he was able to retain a youthful body. However, retaining his youth is literally the least he can do with it, as he is capable of sending the energy right at someone or something. His absorption skills are potent enough to also absorb the entire explosive output equivalent to that of a nuclear bomb.
- Evil Mentor: Towards Erik, who eventually took up Shaw's mutant supremacy ideology. A truly evil one at that, as Shaw killed his new student's mother in front of him to unleash the boy's powers and performed horrifying medical experiments on Erik.
- Evilutionary Biologist: Believes that mutants are further along the evolutionary chain than ordinary humans, therefore they should inherit the earth.
- Faux Affably Evil: He is impeccably polite even when he's going to kill your mom. When he murders people who have slighted him, it's based more on principle than any outright anger.
- Hero Killer: He kills Darwin after absorbing Havok's powers.
- Implacable Man: Most notably in the scene where he invades a CIA base to try to recruit the mutants being housed there. Getting repeatedly hit by volleys of machine gun fire doesn't even muss up his suit. He No Sells an energy blast that's later shown slicing through the walls of a nuclear fallout shelter like butter. The only thing they can hit him with that even slows him down is a bazooka, and then only because it takes him a couple of seconds to absorb the blast.
- Karmic Death: Magneto kills him by telemagnetically pushing a coin through his brain. It was the very same coin that Erik was commanded to move as a child to prevent Schmidt from killing his mother; Erik failed and Shaw shot his mother. Magneto even gives an Ironic Echo of what Schmidt said to taunt his victim.
- Lackof Empathy: While he professes to act on behalf of other mutants, he has little (if any) regard for his "colleagues" in the Hellfire Club whom he views as expendable assets for his plot to trigger a nuclear holocaust and seize power over what remains for himself. Likewise, he shows no regret whatsoever for his crimes against other mutants such as Erik (aka Magneto) and Darwin.
- The Law of Diminishing Defensive Effort: When Magneto sends a storm of metal at him, he doesn't even seem to notice it as all the metal harmlessly bounces off him.
- Which makes sense since his mutant power (in the comics at least) explicitly is to absorb kinetic energy, so simply hitting him tends to leave him both unhurt and stronger than before. He's still vulnerable to less straightforward attacks (even he still needs to breathe, for one) and knows it, though.
- Leitmotif: "La Vie en Rose."
- Living Battery: He was the main component of the weapon he was going to use to wipe out humans so mutants could inherit the Earth. In his mind, "Mutation may have been helped along by nuclear power/weapons" equaled "mutants are nukeproof." His energy powers were what would fuel it.
- Mad Scientist: As Klaus Schmidt.
- Manipulative Bastard: In addition to being an extremely powerful, he is very adept at seducing other mutants to his cause with promises of liberation and the opportunity to tap into powers beyond their wildest dreams. Likewise, he successfully manipulates the leaders of the U.S. and Soviet Union into undertaking increasingly aggressive actions (missiles in Turkey and Cuba) until both are at the threshold of nuclear annihilation.
- Man of Wealth and Taste: He is Faux Affably Evil and always wears stylish clothes (with the exception of his anti-telepathy helmet), camouflages his submarine under a luxury yacht, and serves excellent champagne to the officials he's trying to manipulate into causing World War III.
- A Nazi by Any Other Name: He (who really was a Nazi during the second World War, going under the name "Klaus Schmidt") envisions his mutant-dominated society much as if it were he ruling over 1940s Germany. Ironically, his most scarred victim as a Nazi scientist, Erik "Magneto" Lensherr, finds Shaw's mutant supremacy views to be compatible with his own, despite the fact he spends the entire movie chasing the man in an effort to get revenge for killing his mother.
- Nazi Grandpa: Although his mutant powers ensure he doesn't look like anybody's grandpa.
- Nerves of Steel: He knows how to keep his cool and respond logically to every new threat he faces.
- Older than They Look: He looks to be in his late forties or early fifties when Erik first meets him in 1944. He looks more or less the same, or perhaps slightly younger, when they meet again in 1962, a fact that he credits to his Energy Absorption powers.
- Person of Mass Destruction: Explicitly emphasized as his primary power—he can absorb energy... all kinds of energy. This makes him effectively bullet-proof, rocket and grenade-proof, and can even absorb the energy of your punches, no matter how strong you are. He also states that he is effectively immortal. Finally, he can absorb enough energy to simulate a nuclear bomb blast... and presumably come out the other side unharmed.
- Playing Both Sides: He cunningly manipulates both the USA and the USSR, exploiting the vices and vanity of their military elite to provoke World War III.
- Pragmatic Adaptation: Given that in the comics his power is depicted by having Shaw growing and the film's producers though it was too Hulk-like, the VFX artists instead did it in a way that resembles full body Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs.
- Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: Variant. His Energy Absorption is shown as him doing what seems to be rapid fire fisticuffs with his whole body.
