Neteru Guardian Team

The members of the Neteru guardian team as of The Thirteenth.
     Neteru Damali Richards Rivera
AKA The Neteru, The Huntress. Damali Richards Rivera is the newest made female Neteru, and the first to bridge two milleniums.
  • Abusive Dad: Her last foster-father tried to molest her when she was alone and jamming to her music. Damali responded by beating him up and fleeing, and in the process making sure that he wasn't ever able to harm her or Inez again.
  • Action Girl: As a female Neteru, she is definitely this.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Carlos often calls Damali "'Mali" in more tender moments.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Is this, courtesy of her being an angel.
  • Attempted Rape: Cain attempts to rape Damali when she goes on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge to Hell believing that he's slaughtered her family. Damali does not take it well.
  • Babies Ever After: At the end of the series, Damali and Carlos have twin children, who they call Alejandro and Sarah.
  • Break the Badass: The Chairman forces Damali to watch Carlos turn to ash in the sun, hoping that it'll break her so completely that she will refuse to fight for the Light ever again. She breaks, hard.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents were killed by a vampire when she was just a baby; instead of being taken in by Marlene, who was meant to raise her, she was lost in the foster care system. Though she was safe enough from the vampires, she experienced a lot of discrimination and bullying which stayed with her for a long time, and was also almost molested by her last foster-father.
  • Fake Pregnancy: Damali breaks Eve out of her grief over Cain and even gets her to send a little Light into Vampire Council chambers by telling her what Cain tried to do to her and claiming that she might be carrying his child. In reality she has no clue whether she's pregnant or not or by who, and she certainly doesn't want to find out.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Damali and Juanita.
  • Forced to Watch: Toyed with. Damali isn't forced to watch per se, but she can hear the agony Carlos goes through during his torture at the hands of the Chairman at the end of The Bitten. She actually is forced to watch him burn in the sunlight soon after, though.
  • Happily Married: To Carlos, after the events of The Forsaken.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has this after discovering that Carlos has been turned into a vampire in The Awakening. Also briefly has it when Carlos seems to have died in The Bitten, but quickly rises out of it once she realises that the Light spared Carlos like she begged them to.
  • Imperiled in Pregnancy: In The Shadows, during a battle a demon knocks the pregnant Damali unconscious. This causes Carlos and Marlene to have a major freak-out, as the foetus in Damali could've been injured as well. Thankfully, it wasn't. This incident also alerts the dark side to Damali's pregnancy.
  • The Medic: She learnt healing techniques from her mother-seer Marlene, and also is able to use the Caduceus effectively.
  • Nice Girl: Damali is usually very kind, open and welcoming to others. However, she is lethal to her enemies.
  • Parental Abandonment: Damali's parents died when she was just a baby, leaving her an orphan. Marlene, her destined mother-seer, refused to raise her, being pregnant herself and hunted by vampires. So Damali was placed in foster-care.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Carlos' blue.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: In The Bitten, after she and Carlos go to the Vanishing Point together. Carlos is delighted by it; Damali isn't, understanding the amount of trouble it will cause for both her own side and the Vampire Council.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In The Forsaken, as Cain uses her to obtain the Caduceus for himself to kick-start his grand plan of Take Over the World, and also manipulates her into letting him taste her blood (something which factors into his plan).

     Neteru Carlos Rivera
The male Neteru of the era, and a former Council-level vampire.
  • Action Hero: On par for a Neteru.
  • Babies Ever After: At the end of the series, Damali and Carlos have twin children, who they call Alejandro and Sarah.
  • Back from the Dead: Literally comes back from ash at the end of The Bitten, largely due to the intervention of the warrior angels who are acting on Damali's plea for his life.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Endures this while staked to a wall in Hell in The Bitten, as the harpies try to dredge information from his mind.
  • Consummate Liar: While both alive and dead, he is an excellent liar.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Three times. In The Awakening he puts himself against the vampires/demons attacking the guardian team in Hell to give them and Damali a fighting chance to safely return topside. He ends up being beat up until he's nearly dead and left topside in the middle of a desert to die. The only reason he survives is because the Covenant manages to find and revive him. In The Bitten he uses the last of his energy to rescue the captive Berkfield from his prison on the cruise ship (though he had initially told Damali that he save himself instead), resulting in his capture and torture in Hell.
  • Left for Dead: Is left for dead by the Minion just after the end of the team's first battle in Hell.
  • Love at First Sight: Carlos fell in love with Damali the moment he first laid eyes on her when she was fifteen years old.
  • Marry for Love: Carlos and Damali do this at the end of The Forsaken.
  • Menacing Stroll: Has this as a vampire.
  • Mercy Kill: Is forced to kill his brother and friends after they become vampires to let their souls go into the Light.

     Marlene Stone
One of the team elders. She is the mother-seer of Damali, and is married to Shabazz.
  • Action Girl: Is extremely badass with her trusted staff. Many an enemy has fallen to it.
  • The Mentor: Acts as one to Damali and later Carlos, and also the Neteru guardian team as a whole.
  • My Greatest Failure: Her deepest regret is refusing to raise Damali as her own after the deaths of Damali's parents, instead letting Damali be lost in the foster care system. She also feels extreme guilt over the circumstances of her biological daughter's turning, as she feels she could have done something to prevent it.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: In backstory. Her refusal to take Damali accidentally led to her own daughter's abduction and turning, as Fallon Nuit had abducted her believing her to be the Neteru (as he expected only Damali to be with Marlene). Once he realised that she wasn't the Neteru, he turned her into a vampire.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Her daughter Christine was turned by Nuit, and is offed by Damali during a fight in The Awakening.
  • Retired Badass: As of Shadow Walker she has retired from active duty and runs the Neteru Academy with Shabazz.
  • Seers: Is a very powerful seer.
  • Second Love: Finds love with Shabazz after being forced to separate from Kamal because of the danger of his were-human status.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Her and Kamal. The two loved one another, but were forced to part once Kamal's were-human state began to endanger Marlene.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Her pregnancy with Christine was this. Marlene even tells Damali in The Hunted that she was never meant to raise a child other than Damali.
  • Team Mom: Of the Neteru team.

A seer who was acquainted with Carlos before the beginning of the series. She is married to Jose Cipointe.
  • Seers: Is a seer, though not as powerful as Inez or Marlene.

     Michael Roberts
An audiosensory guardian. A gentle giant known as Big Mike. He is married to Inez.

     Inez Roberts
A seer on the team, and the best friend of Damali. She is married to Mike and has a daughter, Ayana, from another marriage.

     Daniel Weinstein
The business manager of the team, and a tactical. He is married to Heather.

     Marjorie Berkfield
A white witch who chose to turn her back on the dark coven her family is a part of. She is married to Richard Berkfield, and is the mother of Krissy and Bobby.
  • Mama Bear: Do not on any account harm her children. She will go to the ends of the earth to protect them.
    • During her Freak Out in The Forbidden, she refuses to let her children stay with the Neteru team as she's afraid for them.

     Yolando "Yonnie"
A former vampire and close friend of Carlos Rivera. He is married to Val, an angel.
  • Back from the Dead: Comes back into the Light in The Thirteenth.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Yonnie's reason for supporting Carlos when Carlos is a vampire (and even when he isn't a vampire).
  • But You Cant Be Pregnant: Yonnie says this to Val when she says that she's pregnant, assuming that the dark side is playing a trick on them because, as a vampire, he can't get her pregnant. Val tells him that an angel (Uriel) told her she actually was pregnant, and Yonnie discovers that he was brought to life, proving that he can get her pregnant.
  • Mook–Face Turn: Yonnie was just a random third-gen vampire when he was first introduced. When Carlos gives him an elevation bite, which means that as Carlos moves up in Vampiric rank, so does he, however, he becomes completely loyal to Carlos, and therefore the entire Neteru team. By the end of the series, this turns out well for him. He gains a lover/wife in Val, is brought back to life by the light (while still keeping his powers), and has a son.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: In The Thirteenth Val reveals that she's pregnant with Yonnie's child. Yonnie is shocked at the revelation refuses to believe it at first, claiming that since he's a vampire it can't happen.

     Valkyrie
A Valkyrie angel from Nod. She is married to Yonnie, a vampire.
  • Happily Married: To Yonnie.
  • Nice Girl: Is one of the nicest members of the Neteru team.
