Bevan Culverin: son of Evan Culverin and the lead character. He joins La Résistance after his dad gets arrested by the Prefect Guard on charges of conspiracy, unlawful gathering and idleness, hoping to rescue him from the clutches of The Empire.

Taimi Elwood: She's an elven soldier, displaced by the "forced relocation" of her village. She's second-in-command of the platoon and considerably less idealistic than her CO.

Argall Kinnaird: The man in charge of the general health of the platoon. He's a bit of a cynic, and tender moments are far and few between for him, but truly genuine when they do come along.

Charman, Shingler and Iggler: Three gnomes who man the platoon's only artillery weapon, a small mortar, and also responsible for maintaining and repairing the cart.

Fantasy Gun Control — Averted, and in general too. Gunpowder weapons are on the rise...although gunpowder itself is hard to find and harder to keep without a visit from the Prefect Guard.

The Unintelligible — among themselves, although it's due to an impenetrable accent more than anything.

Elior the Bold: The Verdant Swashbuckler, a dashing adventurer who's wanted around the land for his flagrant violation of the law and rich heiresses' homes and hearts. Also a giant lizard.

The Chick — more so than Taimi, who's clearly more of a fighter.

Antagonists

Lord Richard Faulkner: Head of the Empire of Steel. The guy who started it all. Formerly an adventurer, now the tyrant in charge of the Empire of Steel, so named for it was forged with weapons of the material.

Big Bad — All decisions have to go through him, after all.
The Dark Lord — Entirely done away with. He's just a man with a vision and the determination to carry it out.
Designated Villain — In keeping with the whole Black and Grey Morality theme, he's a (rather) legitimate ruler of a stable empire, and most of those who oppose the Empire are in it for personal gain.

I Have Many Names — He should have a list of titles as long as his arm considering the number of kingdoms and principalities he's stomped over, but he likes to keep it simple.

Lillia Heilwig: Deputy to Lord Faulkner and one of his companions before and after his bloody ascension to power. Served as the trio's conscience as the Empire expanded, keeping them from going too far in Faulkner's quest for "peace" in the land. Until she died in one of their campaigns.

Bus Crash: She dies during the Time Skip.
Closer to Earth — She was in charge of the day-to-day runnings of the Empire.

Sjurd Guntram: Left-hand man (dwarf) to Faulkner and the second of his companions. He's more or less a bloodthirsty warrior in it for the glory of the fight above all, even before the Empire's rise. He currently serves as the head of the Prefect Guard.

Loners Are Freaks — He's an outcast of the dwarven lands, and taking his rage out on whatever's in his way.
Our Dwarves Are All the Same— Not this one. He's clean-shaven for a start.
