Katherine Pierce a.k.a. Katerina Petrova
Portrayed By: Nina Dobrev
Katerina Petrova (Bulgarian:
Катерина Петрова), better known as Katherine Pierce, is a witch of the Traveller subculture, the assumed third doppelgänger of Amara, a former vampire, a major antagonist and one of the main characters during the fifth season. She was born to Mr. and Mrs. Petrova on June 5th, 1473 in Bulgaria. She was the main antagonist of season one (through John Gilbert's and Isobel's actions, as both were working for her), and one of the antagonists of season two. She was also a recurring character in the third and fourth seasons. Finally, she has a main role in season five. Katherine's life has always been brought with much tragedy, loss and pain. Katherine was born into a wealthy Bulgarian family. When Katherine was just seventeen years of age, she gave birth to a daughter out of wedlock. Because of the fact that Katherine had a child out of wedlock, her father had her banished from Bulgaria. Katherine than ran away and settled in England. Some time during the late fifteenth century, Katherine met Klaus and Elijah Mikaelson. Katherine fell in love with or had affections for both of the Mikaelsson brothers, although it was Klaus that she was originally taken with. Unknown to her, Katherine was wanted by Klaus for one simple reason: so he could sacrifice her in order to break his hybrid curse. When Katherine had discovered this fact, she began to flee and hide from Klaus, fearing for her safety and her survival. On April 6, 1492, Katherine met Rose, a young British woman who was a vampire and whom was best friends with Trevor, someone who had helped Katherine to escape because Trevor had affections for Katherine. Fearful for her survival, Katherine tricked Rose into feeding her her vampire blood so that a wound that she inflicted upon herself would heal. When Rose was distracted with Trevor, Katherine ended up hanging herself, completing her transformation into a vampire. Katherine returned to Bulgaria to find her entire family slaughtered and brutally murdered after Klaus had retaliated against Katherine for running away from him. Throughout the centuries, Katherine travelled across the world running away from Klaus until in 1864, she came to the town of Mystic Falls where she met Stefan and Damon Salvatore. Katherine fell in love with Stefan and also had an affair with Damon on the side, which only caused the sibling rivalry between the two brothers to heat up immensely. It was the Salvatore brother's relationship with Katherine that ended up changing the relationship between the two forever and what sparked a century plus old rivalry between the once very close brothers. Katherine is responsible for turning both of the Salvatore brothers into vampires, although in regards to Stefan, Katherine come;l;led Stefan to drink her blood while Damon drank Katherine's blood willingly. Katherine's notable ancestors include Amara, the who was Silas' true love and presumably the world's first immortal woman, and Tatia, whose blood was involved in the creation of the spell of immortality that was cast on the Mikaelson Family and the curse that bound Klaus' werewolf side. She is also the maternal ancestor of Isobel Flemming and the latter's biological daughter, Elena Gilbert. She was once the romantic interest of Stefan and Damon Salvatore, as well as Mason Lockwood. Since the late 15th century, she has also been the romantic interest of Elijah, with whom she was involved, until he effectively ended their relationship by leaving to join his half-brother Klaus in New Orleans. Katherine is a member and distant ancestor of the Petrova Family.
