     The King
The King
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/johanandpeewitsking_3034.jpg
Voiced by: Georges Pradez [Original French version]; Unknown Voice Actor [United Kingdom English dub]; Unknown Voice Actor [United States English dub] - The Smurfs and the Magic Flute
Bob Holt - The Smurfs cartoon show - Henri Seroka ("Les chansons de Johan et Pirlouit" album only)

The benevolent, white-bearded ruler of the kingdom and also the king that Johan and Peewit serve under, he is one of the few humans who has befriended the Smurfs. He's not particularly strong-willed or authoritative, but he has a good heart and generally wants the best for his subjects.

  • Adults Are Useless: He has his moments, but he's generally much less helpful than his teenage subjects.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Like Johan, he has them in the comics (though he gets eye-whites if the expression demands it, for example if he's surprised or shocked), and in The Smurfs and the Magic Flute but in the cartoon he has normal cartoon eyes.
  • Distressed Dude: Whenever he plays a big role in the stories, it's most often as this.
  • The Good King: Not a particularly competent one, perhaps, but nobody can deny that he means well.
  • The Load: In the comic story Le pays maudit, later adapted into the cartoon episode The Cursed Country, the bored King insists on joining Johan and Peewit on their journey to free the Smurfs, and quickly proves to be a terrible Load, because life when out on adventure is very different from the luxurious castle life he's used to.
  • No Name Given: He's only ever called "The King" or "Your Majesty," his actual name is never mentioned.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He does bluster a bit, particularly in the comics — but considering that he's always willing to hear people out, not to mention putting up with everything Peewit puts him through, he definitely fits this trope.

     Princess Savina
Princess Savina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/princesssavina_6064.jpg
Voiced by: Jennifer Darling - The Smurfs cartoon show

A not-so-proper princess, niece of the King and cousin of King Gerard, who would much rather join in on Johan and Peewit's many adventures than be stuck at the palace under the watchful eyes of her governess, Dame Barbara.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: While she's a redhead in the cartoon, she was blonde in the comics (though the covers gave her red hair).
  • Ascended Extra: She's not the most major of characters in either comic or cartoon, but she still has a notably larger role in the cartoon, where she lives in the castle with her uncle and is a recurring character — in the comic, she really only appears once, in the role of Damsel in Distress, as she is kidnapped while on her way to visit the King for a few days.
  • Battle Couple: With Johan.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Like uncle, like niece. Once again, in the cartoon show she has normal cartoon eyes.
  • Chastity Couple: With Johan.
  • Damsel in Distress: Plays this in some episodes, even if she's usually resourceful enough to at least try to save herself.
  • Fiery Redhead: Not the most fiery of redheads, but still she's got spunk. This really only applies to her in the cartoon, though, since her comic counterpart is less spirited and only has red hair on the cover (in the internal art, she's blonde).
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: As her governess forbids her from doing anything "improper" she doesn't get many chances to show it, but she's quite capable with a sword.
  • Rebellious Princess: Though her rebellion is usually very low-key and kept hidden from Dame Barbara.

     Johan/John
Johan/John
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/johan-pw_2967.jpg
Voiced by: William Coryn [Original French version]; Unknown Voice Actor [United Kingdom English dub]; Unknown Voice Actor [United States English dub] - The Smurfs and the Magic Flute United States’ English dub
Michael Bell - The Smurfs cartoon show - Henri Seroka ("Les chansons de Johan et Pirlouit" album only)

The King's teenage squire (later knight) and best friend to Peewit, and one of the humans who have befriended the Smurfs. Many of the Smurfs and humans look up to him as a person to never do wrong.

  • The Ace: Johan, the perfect knight: strong, courageous, intelligent, skilled and chivalrous.
  • All-Loving Hero: Part of the reason the Smurfs like him so much.
  • Battle Couple: With Princess Savina.
  • Black Bead Eyes: He has them in the original Johan and Peewit comics, as well as in the The Smurfs and the Magic Flute movie, but in the show itself he has more normal cartoon eyes.
  • Chastity Couple: With Princess Savina.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Johan is prone to this, much to Peewit's annoyance. He helps everyone he comes across, even an old ugly witch or a wandering ghost.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has quite the tongue, particularly when dealing with Peewit.
  • Demoted to Extra: In the cartoon he all but vanished in later seasons — Peewit made several solo appearances and even got to star in the occasional episode, but Johan was reduced to brief cameos, often not appearing at all. The trope is less obvious in the Johan and Peewit comics, but even there he is often overshadowed by Peewit, and is moved Out of Focus in several later stories.
  • Fearless Fool: He has traces of this, always meeting danger head-on.
  • Flat Character: While Johan is The Ace and an exemplary knight, he doesn't have any quirks or Character Development. This may have played into his demotion in the cartoons and comics, since the more comedic Smurfs and Peewit were easier to write stories for.
  • Friend to All Living Things: He's kind and merciful to even his enemies.
  • Hero of Another Story: Presented as this in the cartoon.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: He's a talented swordsman who can fight on par with far more experienced warriors.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Peewit.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's quite quick to anger.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: The Smurfs believe him to have this.
  • Nice Guy: A courageous and compassionate guy all around.
  • Odd Friendship: Again, with Peewit — in the Johan and Peewit comics they're the main Odd Couple.
  • Only Sane Man: Pretty much the only consistently competent person in the kingdom.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Played for Laughs in The Smurfs And The Magic Flute, a merchant enters the village that apparently sells musical instruments to Peewit. Even someone as altruistic as Johan is vocally furious that anyone could be so stupid as to supply Peewit with more musical inspiration and assists the king in violently kicking him out.

     Peewit
Peewit/William (Pirlouit)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Pirluit_7376.jpg
Voiced by: Michel Modo [Original French version]; Unknown Voice Actor [United Kingdom English dub]; Cam Clarke [United States English dub] - The Smurfs and the Magic Flute
Frank Welker - The Smurfs cartoon show

The small-sized court jester who is usually Sir Johan's Sidekick, though in later seasons he made many solo appearances without Johan, interacting with the Smurfs and their other friends/enemies. Apart from Gargamel and Scruple, he's the human character who appears on the show the most.

  • Beware the Silly Ones: Provoke him enough and he can be very effective in combat.
  • Big Eater: He's one of the few characters who can match Greedy Smurf for appetite.
  • Catchphrase: "Later, always later!" whenever Johan says he'll explain later what they're going to do.
  • Cowardly Lion: At first glance he can come across as a Lovable Coward with Miles Gloriosus tendencies, but he'll step out without fail and perform brave feats if his friends are in trouble.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's quite competent when he wants to be.
  • Dreadful Musician: He is a terrible musician, no matter what instrument he plays. Others around him run away from him to get away from his music.
  • Giftedly Bad: Most notably at music, but the few times he tries his hand at magic his failures tend to be truly spectacular — not that this ever stops him from thinking of himself as talented and brilliant.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He was initially an urchin terrorizing the kingdom under the guise of a goblin until Johan took the time to befriend him.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Johan.
  • Hidden Depths: In an album where he is mistaken as a noble heir that was imprisoned for most of their life, he sees through the embezzlement of the evil counselors who otherwise assumed they could make him a puppet lord. When they talk about raising taxes (which would bleed the population dry) because the coffers are empty, he sees through the bullshit, and going through the finance records he competently points out that a lot of money is missing, and gives them an ultimatum: find the missing money or end up in jail. This goes to say that for all his quirks and faults, he could be a very competent, no-nonsense administrator.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: His singing "The Ballad Of Friendship" in The Smurfs and the Magic Flute is so bad that it brings on the rain. He also gets constantly kicked off the stage by the minstrels playing for The King in the same movie.
  • I Want My Mommy!: A frequent crier of this in the cartoon series.
  • The Lancer: Functions as this to Johan.
  • Large Ham: Literally turned himself one in “Johan’s Army.”
  • Lovable Rogue: He's a former thief.
  • Man Bites Man: One of his tactics if he's cornered.
  • Meaningful Name: Phonetically, it matches the character.
  • Never Bareheaded: He's never seen without his hat.
  • Odd Friendship: With Johan.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Peewit is the comedic sidekick next to Johan. It's also part of his job since he's the King's jester.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Sensitive guy to Johan.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: In Johan and Peewit. While Johan is supposed to be the hero of the stories, they focus more on Peewit's antics. This is reflected and exaggerated in the cartoon show, where Johan all but vanished in later seasons, but Peewit still appeared every now and then — and he usually got a starring role when he did.

     Biquette/Annie
Biquette/Annie
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/biquette_917.jpg

Peewit's pet goat and trusty riding animal, Named "Biquette" in the comics and cartoon, and "Annie" in the cartoon version of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute. She's very loyal to Peewit and always tries to protect him, but she's also highly temperamental and will think nothing of attacking and headbutting those who annoy her.

     Homnibus
Homnibus
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Homnibus__7482.jpg
Voiced by: Henri Crémieux [Original French version]; Unknown Voice Actor [United Kingdom English dub]; Unknown Voice Actor [United States English dub] - The Smurfs and the Magic Flute United States’ English dub
Alan Oppenheimer - The Smurfs cartoon show)

A wizard who frequently helps either Johan and Peewit or the Smurfs. Half the time Papa Smurf leaves the Smurf Village, when he isn't seeking for rare herbs, he's going to visit Homnibus and play chess.

     Oliver
Oliver
Voiced by: Serge Nadaud [Original French version]; Unknown Voice Actor [United Kingdom English dub]; Unknown Voice Actor [United States English dub] - The Smurfs and the Magic Flute

Homnibus' young helper. Despite frequently appearing along with his master in Johan and Peewit stories, his only appearance in a Smurfs story so far has been "The Finance Smurf".

  • Demoted to Extra: He was an important character in his first appearance, La Pierre de Lune, but in his latter appearances he became just a background character in Homnibus' cottage.

     King Gerard
King Gerard
Voiced by: Phil Proctor - The Smurfs cartoon show

A teenage prince-turned-king of a neighboring kingdom, and the cousin of Princess Savina. Clockwork Smurf lives with him and acts as his companion and advisor. Appears only in the Animated Adaptation.

     Denisa
Denisa

Lord Balthazar's niece, who is Sassette's friend. Appears only in the Animated Adaptation.

  • Cheerful Child: A very happy child who doesn't quite grasp that at least two members of her extended family are vile villains that consider her a nuisance.
  • Commonality Connection: She and Sassette relate to being annoyed over always being told they're too little to be of any help. Sassette also notes they could technically be considered family through Gargamel (who is both Sassette's Pappy and the godson of Denisa's uncle).
  • Honorary Uncle: She views Gargamel as this, much to his irritation. Denisa's actual uncle is only too happy to encourage it since it means he can pawn her off on Gargamel.
    Sassette: Gargamel is your uncle?
    Denisa: Well, kinda.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: She's fast friends with Sassette, but she's lacking any human friends. She's depressed when the Grackle sisters (the only other human girls her age that she knows) rejected invitations to her slumber party. She's even more depressed when finding out they only changed their minds just so they could steal her toys.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: She has a very loud scream capable of shattering glass. She never seems to realize it, but everyone else around her sure does.
Denisa: Uncle Gargamel, you leave my friend ALONE!
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Not her herself, but she instigates this behavior from others. Balthazar doesn't want to alienate his rich sister and neither Gargamel nor Scruple want to get Balthazar mad at them, so they consistently put on smiling faces around Denisa and try to keep her happy. Gargamel can't even try to harm Sassette in Denisa's presence, as a result of this, nor can he do anything about Denisa letting any captured Smurfs go. The Grackle sisters' mother also encouraged them to play nice in the hopes of buddying up to Balthazar.
  • Spoiled Brat: Downplayed. She's generally well-behaved, but when she really wants something, she won't take no for an answer. Balthazar puts up with it, due to Denisa's mother being extremely rich. Gargamel and others put up with it, due to her piercing scream and their fear of her infamous uncle.
  • White Sheep: Possibly. She's an innocent child, while her uncle is Balthazar. Gargamel is also considered a relation, due to him being Balthazar's godson. It's never made clear if Denisa's mother is just as rotten as Balthazar or simply busy with work, and even less is said about her father.

     Laconia
Laconia

The mute wood elf who appears as a recurring character in the cartoon series.

  • Happily Married: To Woody in "Smurfily Ever After".
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is derived from the Greek district from which we get the term laconic, which means "using few words; expressing much in few words; concise".

     Marina
Marina

A young mermaid from the underwater kingdom of Atlantica, she shows up in three episodes over the course of the series and functions as Handy Smurf's Love Interest.

  • Interspecies Romance: With Handy Smurf.
  • Mermaid Out Of Water: When on land. By contrast, Handy plays the same Fish out of Water role when under the water, being a Smurf in water. The relationship is... difficult.
  • Our Mermaids Are Different: She's Smurf size, has fins for ears, green skin and purple/violet/lavender hair.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Again, with Handy. Her first appearance hammers this home, as Handy almost drowns when attempting to use a diver suit stay in the sea, and she's almost killed in an accident while using one of his inventions to stay on dry land.

     Pussywillow Pixies
Pussywillow Pixies

A group of six pixies, consisting of Elderberry (their leader), Pansy, Holly, Bramble, Lilac, and Acorn, who are constantly hunted by the Wartmongers. They appear only in the Animated Adaptation.

  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: They stop appearing after Season 4, which is noticeable since the Smurfs continue to have run-ins with the Wartmongers.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Pansy is essentially the group's Clumsy Smurf, being a kindhearted klutz. She lampshades this at the end of the group's first appearance.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Not them, but they (like the others in their region) had this view of the Smurfs. No one was even sure if Smurfs actually existed, but all the stories made them out to be vile creatures capable of transforming into hideous monsters. The Pixies are surprised to learn the Smurfs are friendly and heroic.

     Gourdy
Gourdy

A small humanoid genie in Arabic attire who's home, whose name implies, is a gourd found in Farmer Smurf's field. He appeared in three episodes of Season 6.

  • Benevolent Genie: He's not very good at what he does, but he does mean well.
  • Expy: Of a similar-looking genie from Peyo's Pierrot And The Lamp.
  • Genie in a Bottle: His name gives a big hint what his home actually is.
  • Literal Genie: When Slouchy was down in the dumps over Height Angst, Farmer Smurf remarked he'd like to see the kid happy again. Gourdy took that to mean he should grant Slouchy a wish, which was to be the tallest Smurf in the village. The result was everyone in the village but Slouchy being made the size of an ant.
  • Our Genies Are Different: Unlike most genies, he grants unlimited wishes.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Farmer Smurf. He has to obey whoever obtains his lamp, but he wants to serve Farmer Smurf, as he considers him the best master he ever had.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Gets this from his master Farmer Smurf.

     Selwyn and Tallulah
Selwyn and Tallulah

The bickering sorcerer couple who appear only in the Animated Adaptation

  • Dark Is Not Evil: They're not particularly fond of the light, but they're still good people at heart.
  • Meaningful Name: Selwyn is an Anglo-Saxon name that means "friend in the castle".
  • Older Than They Look: According to a Season 8 episode, they're more than 200 years old!
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: They are constantly yelling at and using magic on each other, only to get lovey dovey just as quickly. Tharp (their gargoyle pet) is actually greatly annoyed to see them fight all the time, as it's both stressful and makes him feel neglected.

     Puppy
Puppy
Voiced by: Russi Taylor, Frank Welker - The Smurfs cartoon show

Originally Homnibus' dog, it became a pet of the Smurfs.

  • Older Than They Look: He is a thousand years old because of the locket mentioned above.
  • Only the Chosen May Wield: Wears a locket on his collar that contains "the key to all magic" that only one person can open, while all others who try to open it get zapped by a lightning bolt. As it turns out, Baby Smurf is the only one who can safely open it.

     Smoogle
Smoogle
Voiced by: Russi Taylor - The Smurfs cartoon show

  • No Biological Sex: Applies to both the main character and the race of Smoogles seen in "G'Day Smoogle".

     Chitter
Chitter
Voiced by: Don Messick - The Smurfs cartoon show

A squirrel who is Wild Smurf's friend. Appears only in the Animated Adaptation.

    Mother Nature
Mother Nature
Voiced by: June Foray - The Smurfs cartoon show
The matronly guardian of the forest, who controls all nature.
  • Canon Immigrant: She was created exclusively for the 1980s series, but managed to appear in post-peyo comics.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In the Season 3 episode "All Hallows'Eve", as she's changing leaves to orange and red for autumn. She accidentally turns Lazy Smurf's skin color from blue to red which upsets him. Feeling guilty for her actions, she visits Father Time to find a way to change him back to blue.
  • Mother Nature: Exactly What It Says on the Tin, has a matronly figure and golden hair.
  • Put on the Bus: In Season 2 of the CGI series, Leaf (the descendant of Mother Nature) reveals to The Smurfs that Mother Nature retired her role as the guardian of the forest. As a result, Leaf has taken over Mother Nature's role and a close ally to The Smurfs alongside rescuing them from Gargamel occasionally.

    Father Time
Father Time
The fatherly guardian of the forest, who controls all time.
  • Deus Exit Machina: He could have quite easily solved the problem that led to the Smurfs' time-traveling adventures in the last season, so of course he's not around at that given moment. He doesn't arrive at the village, until after Papa Smurf and the others get lost in time.
  • The Ghost: Is mentioned in the comic book story "The Smurflings", but hasn't yet officially appeared in the comic book universe.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: In the cartoon, he's portrayed as quite friendly and, at times, a bit befuddled. When Gargamel stole his property to try to mess with history, though, Father Time responded by angrily dishing out a punishment. He only relented because of Sassette, who felt sorry for Gargamel.

     Patrick Winslow
Patrick Winslow

An advertising executive for a cosmetics company who encounters the Smurfs, appearing only in the live-action movie series.

  • Agent Scully: To Grace's and Victor's Agent Mulder. He spent the entire half of the first movie in sarcasm mode, convinced that none of it was real. He gets better.
  • Happily Married: To Grace.
  • Hidden Depths: You wouldn't have guessed he'd love to rock out on the guitar.
  • Only Sane Man: You can tell he was thinking something like this during the first movie.
  • Papa Wolf: To his son Blue in The Smurfs 2.
  • Parental Abandonment: Revealed in The Smurfs 2.
  • The Straight Man: Compared to Grace.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In The Smurfs 2. Particularly to his stepdad Victor. Patrick held on to how he replaced his real father, who abandoned him and started a new family. Not to mention holding on to his childish grudge of making his pet parrot leave because Victor is allergic when it turns out Patrick is the one and Victor lied to spare his heart. Plus he finds him always making things worse, embarrassing, and a terrible role model for his son, Blue. Grace was unable to convince him otherwise. Patrick gets better though.

     Grace Winslow
Grace Winslow

  • Jumped at the Call: "Yes! A rescue mission!"
