The Novalog Crew

    Enel Lanum
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/enel_5.png
Our main character. He's been an orphan for as long as he can remember, only recently being adopted by the capitol's librarian, Marcus Lanum. At 14, he has no ambition, no maturity, and an unfailing knack to get under the skin of everyone he meets. His current plan for the future is to become a librarian like his dad, but that's just about it. He has close ties to the country's leader, Velvare, and many assume he's Enel's illegitimate father. He's totally not, though.

  • Afraid of Blood: The sight of blood (among other things) makes him pass out. Understandable, given how he witnessed Velvare suddenly start gushing blood out of his neck when he was 7.
  • Berserk Button: Velvare's not his dad. He's just a nice guy who cares about orphans.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Big Guy (well, tall guy) to Apen's Little Guy.
  • Cheerful Child: As seen in the flashbacks, he was quite the cute kid. No wonder Velvare took a liking to him.
  • Fiery Redhead: One of the more excitable and enthusiastic characters.
  • The Fool: Managed to surprise a ruthless professional assassin with his cluelessness.
  • Happily Adopted: By Marcus, at the end of Chapter 3.
  • Immune to Mind Control: As a Hollingsworth, Enel is immune to Syllor's Curse.
  • Keet: He really wants to see the ocean. [1] (His eyes are even sparkling!)
  • The Load: As seen by the rest of the characters on the Novalog. (except for maybe Idony)
  • Locked Out of the Loop: The kid really can't keep secrets for beans, which is why no one tells him anything. Melete, Velvare, Apen, Noah, and even Indony at some point are all hiding something from him.
  • Meaningful Name: "Enel" means "third". He's Bhatair and Gudrun's third child.
  • Motor Mouth: Known to never stop talking, no matter if the person he's talking to has no interest in what he's saying.
  • Noodle People: From the age of 12 to 14, he grew more than 12 inches, but retained the same body mass. This kid is skinny.
  • One Head Taller: For most people (he's 6' 6"), but two heads, for some.
  • Parental Abandonment: He was left at the orphanage as a baby.
  • Quirky Curls: Enel's wild red curls perfectly convey his wild, excited personality.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: With Chara. No one (in universe) really appreciates it.
  • Spoiled Brat: Despite being an orphan, he was treated like a son by Velvare and given basically anything he wanted, short of actual adoption. Although he's never malicious, he's often inconsiderate of others, selfish, and resorts to manipulation (via guilt-tripping and "the orphan face") to get his way
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Loves candycanes and is almost always shown to be eating them, to the point where they have become a symbol among the fans for the comic.

    Apen Shephard
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_wwwthesilvereyecom_2016_05_21_21_26_30.png
The son of Joshua Shephard, and former king of Cedulan. He was found near the Deadlands at the age of 9 and adopted by the Alvarados, going by the name Joshua Alfero. In addition to his Nedarian telescope, he has a fluffy dog named Melly, and he knows Velvare, although he's forbidden from entering the capitol.
  • Badass Bookworm: His father forced him to become an expert in...well, everything, and he's the story's 4th best fighter. (His height makes other people more effective against taller folks)
  • Child Prodigy: Was intensely educated from an early age by his father to be better than Bhatair's son in every aspect.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: Little Guy to Enel's Big Guy
  • Deadpan Snarker: He gets some of the best lines in the comic - right next to Berlyne.
  • Guilt Complex: Being a Shepherd (and former King of Cedulan), he's inherited the guilt for his grandmother, Antigone's, extermination of the Augustine and Sienna's descendants. He takes personal responsibility to prevent him from falling into the same footsteps as his predecessors. Page 12X13 reveals something about Joshua that he feels responsible for.
  • Happily Adopted: By the Alvarados, eventually.
  • Important Haircut: Gets his spiky, angsty hair cut short before he leaves Gallitan.
  • Living Mood Ring: His natural brown eyes turn bright blue under intense emotion.
  • Shorter Means Smarter: He's 5'2" and a genius in history, music, lineage, and tactics.

    Chara Alvarado
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_wwwthesilvereyecom_2016_05_20_19_07_38.png
The youngest Alvarado child. She enjoys reading, horses, dancing, and Enel. Much more amiable and outgoing than her sister.
  • The Ditz: Described as an "airhead" by the author.
  • Pink Is Feminine: Wears a lot of pink, and is one of the more "girly" characters of the comic.
  • Plucky Girl: Chara is very cheerful and energetic even in unfortunate circumstances, such as the capitol collapsing.
  • Friend to All Living Things: When picking daffodills near the Deadlands, she sees a starved, panicked Ansam, and her first instinct is to run and help the horse. She's shown herself to be particularly thoughtful to the other people on the Novalog, and she spends a lot of time with Apen's dog, Melly.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Her frivolous, carefree girlishness to Berlyne's tougher, quieter no-nonsense.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: With Enel. No one (in universe) really appreciates it.

    Berlyne Alvarado
The oldest Alvarado child. She's the one who decided to rescue Ansam from the Deadlands, and as a result, found Apen. She developed a close attachment (and a bit of a crush) on him, though she's been bitter ever since she saw him try to jump off a bridge to end his life. Him disappearing for 2 years didn't help much either.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_wwwthesilvereyecom_2015_07_17_13_35_29.png
  • Aloof Archer: Composed, practical, and shoots a bow and arrow.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Her favorite method of defense against Enel. It mostly goes over his head, but it's still hysterical.
Enel: I'm nobody! Just a friend of Apen!
Berlyne: *holds up pen* Are you a friend of this pen?
  • Hates Being Touched: Behold: [2]
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Fits the rancher lifestyle right up to her collection of antlers, whereas her sister enjoys being more traditionally girly.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Considerably more tough and practical than her sister, enjoys hunting, and doesn't mind getting rough. Yet, she hates pants and loves sewing.

    Noah St. Claire
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_wwwthesilvereyecom_2016_05_20_18_58_41.png
Velvare's personal physician and messenger. His mother runs the orphanage in the capitol, and Prince Avidan is his cousin. Hates Velvare (he hates most people, actually) because of something he did to mess up Noah's family, and believes Velvare is trying to take care of his country. He has questionable motives for wanting to be on Apen's journey to Levant.
  • Best Served Cold: He hates Velvare for what he did to his family, and will do anything to put him out of power. When Velvare was in a coma following his "accident", Noah tried to kill him in his sleep.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Protective of his younger sisiter, Idony, to the point of being aggressive. May share this sentiment with Enel, even though he hates the kid, because he thinks Enel is his brother.
  • Expy: Taken from Laura's art blog:
Watched Clint Eastwood’s spaghetti western trilogy with the fam. Like two minutes after he first came on screen, sister Alyssa leaned over to me, “Is this who Noah thinks he is?”
    Oh you know that’s right.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Described by the author as "the grumpiest munchkin of them all."
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: Whatever Velvare did to his father, it made Noah go from an idealistic kid with dreams to, well, Noah.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may be a huge grump, but he loves his sister. Idony can always bring out his soft side.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: He's cynical, angry, paranoid, and overprotective, but he'll defend you with his life.
  • Instant Messenger Pigeon: Noah received pigeondove from Blue Dolan after his father died.
  • Perma-Stubble: And boy, does it look good on him.
  • Secret Relationship: He's been married to Ruya for at least two years and no one from the West knows.
  • Self-Harm: What began as pinching his arm to help him retain sanity while under Syllor's Curse devolved into subconsciously clawing into his own arm any time a Shephard orders him about. He once tore into his ulnar artery and blacked out to avoid 'committing certain atrocities'.
  • Shirtless Scene: Noah gets one at the beginning of chapter 17, at the behest of the author’s sister.
  • The Medic: He's a surgeon, albeit a very intimidating one.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: We haven't seen it in flashbacks yet, but Word of God states he was happy and carefree at one point, or at least like a kid's supposed to be. Velvare did something that affected Noah's family, and he's implied to be involved in Mr. St. Claire's death.
  • You Killed My Father: Blames Velvare for his father's death.

    Idony St. Claire
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_wwwthesilvereyecom_2016_05_21_09_15_28.png
Noah's younger sister. Helped her mom a lot in the orphanage, even after she went blind. She loves Marcus the librarian, but she's not willing to commit herself to a relationship just yet. She'll follow her brother wherever he goes, even if she's not sure if his paranoia is well-founded.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has beautiful, curly blonde hair, and is easily the sweetest character in the comic
  • The Pollyanna: Next to Chara, she's the most optimistic one of them all. Especially in comparison to her brother.
  • Team Mom: Growing up helping in her mom's orphanage, she's naturally caring and used to taking care of children. She looks out for the well-being of the Novalog Crew, especially Noah (and Enel).
  • Youthful Freckles: Like all St. Claires, her face is covered with freckles.

    Marcus Lanum
Librarian from Preble who lives outside the capitol. Becomes Enel's adopted father in chapter 3, and he's in love with Idony, though he's unable to convince her to enter a relationship with him. He has some sort of connection to Velvare, the nature of which is unknown.
  • Abusive Parents: It's heavily implied that teenage Bhatair took young Marcus out of an abusive home life in Preble.
  • Brainy Brunette: The biggest book nerd in the comic, and has brown hair.
  • Scary Librarian: Not outright mean, but he dislikes children and has been known to yell at them to leave him alone/be quiet.

    Melly
  • Canine Companion: Apen and Melly are near inseperable.
  • Tribute to Fido: Melly is an expy of the author's real life dog, Melly.

Gallitan

    Velvare Bamidele/Bhatair Hollingsworth
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_wwwthesilvereyecom_2016_04_24_17_28_17.png
  • Becoming the Mask: Quite literally, in this case. "Velvare" is more calm, composed, and restricted than "Bhatair". The longer he's in Gallitan, the more he tries to convince himself Bhatair doesn't exist anymore.
  • The Chessmaster: Plays politics with his hand close to his chest.
  • Cool Horse: Ansam, the purebred Arabian trained to come at the sound of Glepnir, possesor of awesome ninja skills.
  • Cool Mask: Velvare rarely goes around in Gallitan without some sort of fancy mask, to the point where he now wears them more because people expect him to than any other reason.
  • Covered in Scars: After the events in the ampitheater, every inch of Velvare's body is covered in scars. Melete's curses hold him together, but every once in awhile (when he's tired or in contact with other magic), they become more prominent and start to bleed.
  • Hot-Blooded: More so Bhatair than Velvare, especially during his interactions with Joshua. The main reason Joshua loved to pick on him was because his reactions were so funny and over-the-top.
  • Immune to Mind Control: As a descendant of Augustine, Velvare is one of the only people immune to Syllor's Curse who also knows how to break it.
  • Impoverished Patrician: Following Antigone's war, Bellingrath was in ruins. The Shephards used to joke that Bhatair only owned one red coat, but he had it tailored differently each time to two leaders met to make it look like he had more.
  • Insistent Terminology: He's only 38.
  • Living Mood Ring: His naturally minty-blue eyes turn amber during intense emotion.
  • Parental Substitute: Treats Enel like a son. He and Avidan grew up as best friends.
  • Mystical White Hair: After this scene in chapter 6, his hair turns white for reasons yet unexplained.
  • Not So Stoic: Despite his efforts to appear mature, regal, and collected, there are moments where his inner Bhatair shows through. Usually with Melete or Enel.
  • The Good King: How he's seen by his people. Until he screws it up by revealing his Nedarian-ness.

    Melete Dolan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/blue_8.png
  • Broken Bird: Between whatever Syllor did to her and her imprisonment by Antigone, she doesn't trust anyone other than Velvare, and she avoids people at all costs. Especially her own descendants.
  • Complete Immortality: Cursed herself to remain immortal so she could avoid meeting her husband in the afterlife.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Blue eyes (that glow when she uses magic) to match her hair.
  • No Social Skills: Years of enforced and self-imposed isolation will do that to you.
  • Really 700 Years Old: 800, to be exact.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's no less than 7 feet tall, topping even Velvare. She uses curses to cheat, though.

    Avidan Leto
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_wwwthesilvereyecom_2016_02_05_15_41_05.png
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: They're fairly normal-sized, but their jet-black color contrasts so much with his blond hair, they look bigger than they really are. As his character image suggests, he can make some very intense faces.
  • Meaningful Name: His first name means "my father is judge". 'Leto' means 'forgotten' - his birthright is to be left behind.
  • Perpetual Frowner: He's like a smaller version of Noah.
  • Stepford Snarker: His bitterness comes from constantly being in Velvare's shadow, even though he's the prince and Velvare's just the placeholder. His efforts to hide it just make him look grumpy all the time, especially towards Enel.

    Savannah St. Claire

    Thoth St. Claire
Savannah's husband, father of Noah, Idony and possibly had another son in an affair. He acted as a body double for Bhatair and was killed while doing so. He also had an affair with Bhatair's wife Gudrun and was thought to be Enel's father, but the implication of Walter's curse on Enel and Nathan is that he actually fathered Nathan instead.
  • Body Double: Thoth was turned into the perfect body double for Bhatair by Walter's curse, and Bhatair took advantage of this to hide his travels.
  • Inexplicably Identical Individuals: Walter's curse is to blame for turning Thoth into a doppelgänger of Bhatair, but it is unknown exactly how.

Levant

    Joshua Shephard
Apen's father. Was killed in the chaos following Bhatair's assassination.

    Gudrun Terpsi
Bhatair's wife, and the mother of his children. She seems to have had a couple affairs one with Thoth and another with Joshua, each producing sons who she's gone at lengths to hide.

    Delaney Hollingsworth
Bhatair and Gudrun's daughter.

    Nathan

    April Shephard

    Rev. Jonathan Terpsi
  • Turbulent Priest: Reverend Terpsi helped shelter Hollingsworth descendants from Antigone during the war, and later helps Apen when he is sent to the Deadlands.

    Antigone Shephard

Shippy McShipface Crew

    Aetius Nimrod
  • Anchors Away: Throws an anchor at Noah not once, but twice.
  • Laughably Evil: The same man who ruthlessly carried out the murders of hundreds of thousands of Hollingsworth descendants is the same man who named his boat Shippy McShipface.

    Aquil "Q"
  • Compelling Voice: As a Shephard descendant, Aquil uses Syllor's Curse to keep the ship's crew loyal to Aetius.

    Ruya
  • Defiant Captive: Despite being forced to stay on the ship by Syllor's Curse, Ruya does what she can to try to warn Noah to stay safe. She gets tied up and gagged for acting out.
  • Secret Relationship: Married to Noah.
