This is a list of characters that appear in the works of the band Sound Horizon. Be reminded that since [[ShrugOfGod all interpretations are valid]], some tropes applied here may be purely speculative in nature.

[[folder:''Chronicle'' and ''Chronicle 2nd'']]
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

-->''"No matter the period, we will not give up. Beyond history, beyond the sky that is far yet close.''
-->''The promise I made with you, the thoughts I received from you, is our endless Chronicle..."''

The main protagonist of the whole album, Lucia is a girl who wholeheartedly believes that the world can actually be saved from the [[EldritchAbomination Beast That Devours History]] by forgoing the Chronicle and guiding it to the right path.

* AnimalMotifs: The white crow mentioned on every instance of the tracks of Chronicle 2nd is very possibly a representation of her.
* {{Bokukko}}
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: The reason why she was taken into the Black Order.
* {{Foil}}: To Chronica. Whereas the latter is a fatalist who chooses to just go with whatever outcome the Chronicle (read: [[AnthropomorphicPersonification she]]) had predicted, Lucia wants to go exactly against it. Oh, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and her hair is white, whereas Chronica's is black.]]
* DefectorFromDecadence: She disagrees with the Black Order's complete submission under the reins of history.
* InTheBlood: Her parents are also defectors from the Black Order. Noah lampshades this trope to her in name.
* ScrewDestiny
* WideEyedIdealist: Chronica has stated that history does not allow altercations—indeed, as any altercations imposed upon the Chronicle’s predestined path is, [[ShapedLikeItself ''in itself, destiny'',]] and thus, it could be said that Lucia’s whole effort has already been predicted by the Chronicle, as well. Nonetheless, Lucia still wants to guide history to the ‘right’ course, whatever it is, so long as it's not as hopeless as was predicted.

-->'''Played by:''' Aramary, [[spoiler: Creator/MiyukiSawashiro ''(Nein)'']]

--> ''All's well that ends well.''

The personification of the Black Chronicle, or, rather, its whole “essence”. As she is the one who dictated the course of history, the Black Order venerated her as a God. In contrast to Lucia, Chronica, true to her nature, believes that there is no changing history and [[TheFatalist prefers to wait for the end of the world]].

* AmbiguouslyEvil: Heavily implied to be the Beast that Devours History, but...what she is doing amounts to nothing but say that opposing Fate is hopeless.
* AnthropomorphicPersonification
* [[spoiler: TheCameo: Appears in the very last part of Nein's second track.]]
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette
* TheFatalist
* {{Foil}}: To Lucia. To her, the Chronicle, and thus, destiny, is inescapable, as no matter what you do, the path has ''always'' been predestined.
* OperaGloves
* RapunzelHair: Often depicted as having floor-length hair.
* RealityWritingBook: A type 1.
* RedEyesTakeWarning
* TomesOfProphecyAndFate: ''She'' herself is this.
* WomanInBlack

!!Luna Ballad / "The Earthly Moonlight"
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary, Karen ''(Nein)''

-->''"Destiny ... even if you take the light from my eyes, you'll never be able to take the song from my lips ..."''

Protagonist of the song "A Song Struggled Towards" (''"Tadoritsuku Uta"''), from the 9th chapter and page 883 of the Black Chronicle. She is the lover of Endymion Ballad, who perished right in the previous track after his poem enraged the ruling Queen of Britannia.

''Nein'' reveals that the two used to be together until a certain battle [[DoomedHometown separated them from their homeland]]. Earnestly believing that Endymion is still alive somewhere, [[IWillFindYou she sets out to search for him.]] Blinded on the way, she [[{{Determinator}} nonetheless]] managed to find Endymion[[spoiler:’s…remains, in the form of [[TragicKeepsake a song he dedicated to her moments before his execution.]]]]

In ''Nein'', she reappears in track 2, “Na mo Naki Onna no Uta”. This time, R.E.V.O. managed to stop Luna from continuing her journey before she goes blind through a chance encounter with a certain baker. [[spoiler:Their resulting relationship diminished her determination to find her one and true love. Though that doesn't mean she can't be happy with that kind-hearted man, who has saved her life.]]

* BittersweetEnding: Her whole search for her lover ended up with the discovery that [[spoiler:he was already dead since a long time ago, but she does find his last song, which is dedicated to her.]] With this comes her recognition as a hero and a symbol of both struggle and peace by the Queen and people of Britannia due to her determination, and their everlasting respect.
** In Nein, [[spoiler:she might very well never be reunited with Endymion, and will remain an obscure figure in history, but hey, she never goes blind and finds a happy new home and a loving husband in the baker who saved her. They also have a child together. ]]
* {{Determinator}}: Not much people would continue a journey alone while blind.
** [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] in ''Nein'', where she gives up and decides that even if her love is different, she would still be happy spending the reminder of life with him. She ended up getting together with a baker.]]
* DoomedHometown: Her hometown and Endymion’s was most likely destroyed in a war, which would explain their separation.
* [[spoiler:HerHeartWillGoOn: The alternate outcome R.E.V.O. decides to give her in Nein. Seems like he has completely forgotten/is amiss of the fact that without her sheer determination to search for Endymion, the Kingdom of Britannia will never have their hero, motivation, and symbol of awakening.]]
* HeroicSpirit: Even after becoming blind and [[spoiler: losing her lover]], she does not succumb to despair, but remains as determined as before.
* IWillFindYou: The song "Tadoritsuku Uta" is about her determined quest to find her lover.
* [[ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming Mythological Theme Naming]]: She is named after the [[Myth/ClassicalMythology Roman personification of the Moon]][[labelnote:note]] not to be confused with the Goddess of the Moon ''and'' the Hunt, who is called Diana [[/labelnote]], just as her lover/husband is named after the mortal shepherd/prince the goddess fell in love with
* RedBaron: "The Earthly Moonlight".
* [[spoiler: Rescue Romance: How she and the baker came to be. The latter encountered her unconscious on the forest and brought her all the way to his bakery, nursing her back to health.]]
* TheStoryteller: Tadoritsuku Uta is one of the only two tracks in Chronicle 2nd (the other being Raijin no Sawan) that is not narrated by the album’s main narrator, but by its respective protagonists instead.
* UglyGuyHotWife: [[spoiler: Her new husband, the baker, is clearly stated to not be the most attractive of men, making her automatically fit into this trope.]]
* Wandering Minstrel: In the original album, of course. [[spoiler: In Nein, in tune with her sudden change of purpose in life, she becomes a baker’s apprentice (and wife) instead.]]

!!Endymion Ballad
-->'''Played by:''' Shin-Imayama ''(Nein)''

A minor, yet important character featured in chapters 7-9 of the Black Chronicle, first appearing in "Tragedy of Ballad the Poet" (''"Shijin Ballad no Higeki"''). Luna Ballad’s lover whom thought she was dead after they were separated in a certain battle, as detailed in Nein. Sometime after the separation he was called forth by the previously ruling Queen of Britannia in order to make a beautiful poem that praises her beauty and power.

Instead of doing exactly that, though, he mocked her with a certain passage: a supreme, blooming rose (the Queen) cannot match the beauty of the withered one in his memory (Luna). Insulted, [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen the Queen]] immediately orders his execution. The night before his death, he composed [[TragicKeepsake a final poem for Luna]], which was heard by his jailor, and eventually passed on, becoming popular throughout Britannia. Contrary to his belief, Luna is not dead yet, and is in fact still searching for him. It was that final song that guided her to his fate.

In Nein, R.E.V.O. altered the circumstances of his fate by having him add an additional passage to his StealthInsult of a poem—even though there was a supreme rose that cannot match a withered one, there is one single rose not of this world that shines on all of them, a beacon of light that illuminates the winter-clad world…[[ProfessionalButtKisser the Queen herself!]] Does this last-second act of self-preservation finally makes it possible for him and Luna to meet? [[spoiler: [[ShaggyDogStory No.]] Instead of becoming the national fame that he was in Chronicle, he is reduced to obscurity, and his whole creativity as a poet dies along with his fame. Oh, and Luna forgets about him and hooks up with a baker.]]

* TheBard: And his lover is a WanderingMinstrel, searching for him.
* DoomedHometown: His hometown and Luna’s was most likely destroyed in a war, which would explain their separation.
* [[ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming Mythological Theme Naming]]: Named after the mortal shepherd/prince from Classical Mythology whom the anthropomorphic goddess of the Moon fell in love with, just as his lover is named after said goddess.
* NiceHat: Depicted as having a wide-brimmed hat with fancy feathers on ''Nein''’s regular cover art.
** PermaStubble: As with his hat, he is also depicted as having this.
* Shaggy Dog Story: What his life story is, both in the original album ''and'' ''Nein''. The latter example is rather jarring (and grating) because R.E.V.O. is supposedly trying to find a “happy” outcome to the tragic fates of previous horizons’ protagonists.
** SuddenlyVoiced: The only track of which he is a protagonist in Chronicle is only an instrumental. Come Nein and he’s been voiced by a baritone.

!!General Albers Alvarez ("Arbelge")
-->'''Played by:''' Jimang

The protagonist of songs “Alberge’s Battle” (''“Alberge no Tatakai”''), “The Promised Hill” (''“Yakusoku no Oka”''), and “Holy War and the Reaper” (''“Seisen to Shinigami”''), which spans two whole chapters in the album. Albers is a man from the country of Belga, who, after its occupation, took refuge in the Flandre Empire and becomes a ruthless war general nicknamed “The Silver Reaper” serving under Emperor Childebert VI…[[{{Irony}} under the purpose of freeing Belga from the latter’s grasp.]]

His career in the Flandre Army is cut abruptly, however, when he witnesses the horrific massacre his own army committed at Whitehaven during the Battle of Grasmere. [[HeelRealization Realizing]] all the atrocity he had committed, he soon defects to the Kingdom of Britannia under [[TheHighQueen Queen Rosa Guine Avalon]] in hopes of [[TheAtoner redemption]][[spoiler:, but is killed by his nemesis Gefenbauer during a ceasefire agreement between the Holy Flandre Empire and the Kingdom of Britannia. After his death, he is hailed worldwide as a hero.]]

* AntiHero: He may be a protagonist who is wholly dedicated to protecting his country, but he is also technically a mass-murderer.
* TheAtoner
* '''{{Badass}}'''
** HeartbrokenBadass: His lover, Charlotte, is a casualty in the war, and he’s very remorseful about it.
* DeathSeeker: After withdrawing from Whitehaven following his HeelFaceTurn, Albers just wants someone to kill him to atone for his foolish mistake. [[spoiler: Queen Rosa]] quickly snaps him out of it. [[spoiler: He got exactly what he wished just after he stopped being this trope and during a ceasefire agreement that was meant to stop the whole schtick he made worse.]]
* DoomedHometown: Belga.
* DefectorFromDecadence: A defector from Holy Flandre Empire's warmongering ambitions.
* [[spoiler: DyingDream: Before he dies, he saw a vision of the sunset-colored hill where he made his promise with Charlotte. That’s exactly where he and Charlotte are buried.]]
* TheDragon: Initially, of Emperor Childebert VI. [[spoiler: After his HeelFaceTurn, becomes TheLancer of Queen Rosa.]]
* EmpathicWeather: [[spoiler: A soft rain can be heard during his death sequence.]]
* FightingForAHomeland: ...under the very man who conquered it.
* HeelRealization: The dude realized kind of too late that no matter how many countries he conquered for the Emperor, the latter just isn’t going to give Belga the freedom he requested.
* HeelFaceTurn: He massacres other countries in hopes that if he conquers more territories for the Emperor, then the latter would grant his occupied hometown freedom. It’s not granted, resulting in him defecting to Britannia, the country he at first was ordered to attack.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Has a major moment of this when he called one of his comrade out for daring to shoot an unarmed girl [[spoiler: (who, unbeknownst to both of them, is the Queen of Britannia)]] and nearly striking her to death, when in the previous track he had just massacred ''an entire capital '''and smiled''' after the entire deed.'' Gefenbauer, naturally, chews him out on this.
* {{Leitmotif}}: The riff of “Alberge no Tatakai”, and his battle chant.
* [[TheLostLenore The Lost Charlotte]]
* OminousLatinChanting: Or something like it. An epic chorus that translates to “The time has come! Here he is—The Reaper! The time has come! Look! The Reaper!” Accompanies his appearance in the battlefield [[spoiler: and his death.]]
* PlayingTheHeartStrings: A very soothing, yet somber violin solo serves as a closing sequence to his saga.
* RedBaron: “The Silver Reaper”, named after his shining armor and his countless victims. Certainly doubles as A NameToRunAwayFromReallyFast.
* [[spoiler: RedemptionEqualsDeath]]
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His last name is clear enough, but what about his first name? Is it Alber? A'''r'''bel? Albers? A'''l'''be'''r'''ge? A'''r'''be'''l'''ge? ''Auberge''?

!!Rose Guine Avalon / "The Supreme Rose"
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

-->"A fool ... isn't someone who makes mistakes ... it's someone who knows their mistakes, but does not correct them ..."

The [[AChildShallLeadThem young]] Queen of Britannia, having known to hold the throne since track 5, "Knights of the Rose" (''"Bara no Kishidan"''). She is the niece of the previous Queen, who is so infamous for her cruelty, Rosa herself gave her the nickname [[TheDreaded "The Winter Rose"]]. An optimist charismatic, she earnestly believes that she can become a beacon of hope for her people under the guidance of her Goddess, Brigid.

* AChildShallLeadThem
* [[spoiler: AnnoyingArrows: Shot by Gefenbauer in "Eiyuu no Fuzai" and almost struck dead by his sword hadn't Alvarez saved her. The resulting agony doesn't seem to be carried through the next track. Perhaps Alvarez is that good of a medic?]]
* TheHighQueen
* ModestRoyalty: She prefers people call her by her first name, not "Her Majesty"[[spoiler:, courtesy of her conversation with Alvarez.]]
* PluckyGirl: Yes! For starters, she confidently vows in front of her people, who have for long been suffering under her predecessor's rule--who is her own aunt, no less--that she ''will'' lead her kingdom out of darkness. She also does not cower in the presence of [[spoiler: Alvarez]] despite his reputation, instead commanding him (who is having a major MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment) to bravely face his mistakes, as redemption ''does not'' equal death. [[spoiler: Also, not many royalties could maintain their charisma after being shot by an arrow until unconscious like she did.]]
* [[KingIncognito Queen Incognito]]: By necessity, as she does this to escape an oncoming siege to her castle by the Flandre Empire.
* RedBaron: "The Supreme Rose".
* WiseBeyondTheirYears
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Nothing is told of her after that [[spoiler: botched ceasefire agreement which took Alvarez' life.]]

!!Roberia Maria Della Firenza
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

* AmbitionIsEvil
* EvilLaugh
* {{Foil}}: To Giulietta.
* RedOniBlueOni: Red to Giulietta's Blue.
* TheRival: To Giulietta.

!!Giulietta Simone Del Viscontie
-->'''Played by:''' Haruka Shimotsuki

* AmbitionIsEvil: Noticeably averted, especially if you compare her to Roberia, who plays this trope straight.
* [[spoiler:BalefulPolymorph]]: In "Umi no Majo."
* {{Foil}}: To Roberia.
* [[spoiler: LiteralCliffhanger]]
* RedOniBlueOni: Blue to Roberia's Red.
* TheRival: To Roberia.

!!The protagonist

* HearingVoices
* NoNameGiven
* TheOphelia
* PurpleEyes

!!The woman who shot down her lover
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

-->"In a world where I have lost my lover, flowers of what colour will bloom?"

The protagonist of the song "Koibito wo Uchiotoshita Hi".
* [[spoiler: DrivenToSuicide]]: Heavily implied at the end of her song.
* KillTheOnesYouLove[=/=]StakingTheLovedOne
* NoNameGiven

[[folder:''Pico Magic'' and ''Pico Magic Reloaded'']]
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

* BreakingTheFourthWall: She directly addresses the audience in her songs.
* GenkiGirl
* MotorMouth

!!Michèle Malebranche
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

The protagonist of the songs "Yaneura no Shōjo", "Ori no Naka no Hana" and possibly "Ori no Naka no Yūgi".
* CharacterOverlap: [[spoiler: She appears in the bonus track of ''Roman''.]]
* GoMadFromTheIsolation
* IJustWantToHaveFriends
* MadwomanInTheAttic: A variation in that she is not locked up because she is insane, but [[GoMadFromTheIsolation insane because she is locked up]].

-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

The protagonist of the song "Rein no Sekai".
* [[ABoyAndHisX A Girl And Her Dog]]
* ApocalypseMaiden

--> '''Played by:''' Aramary

-->"Hey ... papa, what kinds of flowers bloom in that paradise?"

* ChildrenAreInnocent
* ConstantlyCurious: She comes across as this in "El no Rakuen [->side: E->]".
* CreepyChild
* DaddysGirl
* IllGirl
* MeaningfulName: Both El and Elys play on Elysion
* MummiesAtTheDinnerTable: "Eru no Rakuen [-> side:E ->]" suggests that El has convinced herself that her father is still alive and carries on conversations with his dead body. Though, like so much about Sound Horizon, it's open to interpretation.

!!The Masked Man / Abyss
--> '''Played by:''' Jimang

-->"Is that girl my Elys?"

* CatchPhrase: Besides the above quote, he's very commonly identified with the line "Zannen datta ne," which probably translates best to "Now that's a shame." That line's appearance in the lyrics of [[spoiler:"The Grapevines of Joy and Sadness" leads to the common speculation that Loraine de Saint-Laurent is actually the bride who killed Abyss]].
* [[spoiler: DeathByMaterialism]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: His devotion to El.
* KickTheDog: In the live performance of El's Scales, at the beginning of the song, he's after money, and he sees two injured people on the street. So does he simply mug them quickly and demand the money? No... he sneaks up behind them and freaking '''takes one of the injured people's crutches and beats him half to death with it''' before taking their money. Really, there had to be a slightly less... destructive way of achieving the same ends.
* MagicalFlutist: In "The Piper and the Parade"
* MaskPower
* RedEyesTakeWarning: The illustration on the back cover of ''Elysion ~Rakuen Gensō Monogatari Kumikyoku~'' depicts him with glowing red eyes.

!!Soror / "Subject 1096"
--> '''Played by:''' Aramary

-->"Come ... let us return to Paradise, brother ..."

The protagonist of the song "Ark".
* BrotherSisterIncest: She falls in love with her older brother.
* CreepyChild
* DissonantSerenity
* LaughingMad
* {{Yandere}}

!!Frater / "Subject 1073"

Soror's older brother.
* AloofBigBrother: Implied in the song "Ark", definitely the case in the song's manga adaptation.
* TheVoiceless: In the song, but not in the manga.

!!The Watcher

The person who conducts and/or observes the experiments on Frater and Soror.
* MadScientist
* MysteriousWatcher

-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

The protagonist of the song "El no Ehon - Majo to Lafrenze". She guards the gates of the underworld, but can only do so as long as she remains a virgin.
* BarrierMaiden
* VirginPower: Her abilities as the gatekeeper.
* WomanScorned: When she finds out Orpheus was just using her ("Hell hath no fury..." is a strangely appropriate expression, there).

!!Crimson Old Rose
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

A witch who was banished from her country. She was the one who raised Lafrenze.
* CharacterOverlap: She and Alte Rose (German for "old rose") in ''Märchen'' are implied to be the same person.

* {{Bishonen}}: Even plays a HarpOfFemininity
* ManInWhite: In the live performance
* OrpheanRescue: Well, yeah.
* ToHellAndBack
* TheVoiceless

!!The nun / "Maiden of the Twisted Pearl" / "Baroque"
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

The protagonist of the song "Baroque".
* DecapitationPresentation: In the live performance.
* NotGoodWithRejection: She is absolutely terrified of being rejected, so when the girl she's fallen in love with rejects her love, she snaps.
* NunsAreSpooky / NunTooHoly: There's the obvious DeathByWomanScorned, of course, but the fact that she's a lesbian to begin with, as a member of the (presumably) Catholic Church, and confessed (presumably hoping to commence a relationship) goes pretty well against Catholic dogma, even if she hadn't been rejected and gone PsychoLesbian.
* PsychoLesbian
* ShrinkingViolet
* TrueBlueFemininity: In the album illustrations, her habit is blue. Averted in the concerts, where she wears a standard black habit.
* {{Yandere}}

!!The farm girl / "Yield"
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

The protagonist of the song "Yield".
* OffWithHisHead: Her modus operandi
* {{Yandere}}

!!The bride
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

The protagonist of the song "El no Tenbin".
* CharacterOverlap: She and Loraine de Saint-Laurent in ''Roman'' are implied to be the same person.
* NoNameGiven
* RunawayFiancee

!!The older sister / "Sacrifice"
-->'''Played by:''' Aramary

The protagonist of the song "Sacrifice".
* TheCaretaker
* IWishedYouWereDead: At one point, she is so envious of her younger sister that she prays for her death, after which her sister becomes infected with the plague. Feeling guilty, the older sister takes her wish back and her sister recovers ... and then their mother dies.
* [[KnightTemplarBigBrother Knight Templar Big Sister]]: It's implied that she ends up [[spoiler:burning the entire village down as retribution for her sister's death]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After her sister becomes ill, she blames herself for it due to having previously wished for her death.
* PromotionToParent: After her mother's death, she plays the role of a mother to her younger sister.
* TheUnfavourite: She certainly feels like it, but it may not actually be the case.
* WhereIWasBornAndRazed: [[spoiler:The end of the song implies this]].
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: After the injustice she faced, it's hard not to feel sorry for her.

!!The younger sister

* [[spoiler:BurnTheWitch]]
* IncorruptiblePurePureness
* TheIngenue
* [[spoiler: TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth]]
* TheVoiceless

!!The woman in red / "Stardust"

The protagonist of the song "Stardust".

* LadyInRed: "Red dress, red heels, red lipstick, red rose"
* WhiteDwarfStarlet
* WomanScorned: When she finds her lover cheating on her.
* {{Yandere}}

!!The woman in red's lover

* DeathByWomanScorned
* RustproofBlood: Very noticeably averted - the song notes that the blood turns black as it's exposed to air, for symbolic purposes.
* TheVoiceless
* WhiteShirtOfDeath
* YourCheatingHeart

[[folder: ''Shōnen wa Tsurugi wo ...'']]

!!Hiver Laurant
--> '''Played by:''' Revo

The album's protagonist. He is actually the soul of a stillborn child, and his curiosity about life and death prompts him to send his two dolls, Violette and Hortense, out into the world to find stories revolving around these subjects.
* {{Bishounen}}
* ConvenientMiscarriage: Well, more so "heartbreaking" than "convenient", really, especially after taking certain songs (like "Honoo") into account. It's also what sets the album in motion: Hiver is actually the soul of a stillborn, and his curiosity about life and death, as well as a desire to be born into the world, is what prompts him to send the dolls out to find stories revolving around those subjects.
* FisherKing: Hiver in the manga. He's obviously not in our world, but the very little we see of the... mysterious place he stays in seems pretty parallel to winter, what with its emptiness and open space of white. Probably makes some lovely echoes, too.
* LongHairedPrettyBoy

!!Violette and Hortense
--> '''Played by:''' KAORI (Violette) and YUUKI (Hortense)

-->"I wonder if a story exists there ..."

Hiver's two dolls. Violette is associated with death, while Hortense is associated with life.
* CatchPhrase: "''Soko ni Roman wa aru no kashira''", which means "I wonder if a story exists there."
* CreepyTwins
* DarkIsNotEvil: Even though Violette is the one associated with death, she never shows any signs of being any creepier or more amoral than Hortense. In fact, in the song Honoo, she's the one "swaying with joy," while Hortense is the one "wet with sadness." Then again, considering [[ConvenientMiscarriage the situation]], there may be more than one way to interpret that.
* ElegantGothicLolita
* {{Expy}}: Blond, twin ElegantGothicLolita [[RidiculouslyHumanRobot Ridiculously Human]] {{Robot Girl}}s? [[Manga/{{Chobits}} Now where has that shown up before?]]
* RobotGirl: Though they're actually the embodiment of [[spoiler:twin dolls given to the stillborn Laurent by his mother on his burial]], so not technically robots as much as maybe [[{{Golem}} golems]], they still use very stilted and emotionless language, and the remix of "Asa to Yoru no Roman" clearly has them singing in a mechanical voice, not to mention that in live performances, KAORI and YUUKI always perform them by moving in a stilted, mechanical matter.

!!The Blond-Haired Laurant / Leon Laurant

The protagonist of the song Miezaru Ude.
* TheAlcoholic
* DomesticAbuser
* DrowningMySorrows
* EpiphanyTherapy: After Laurencin kills the red-headed Laurant (or slightly before, when he sees the red-headed Laurant, in the manga), he recognizes that his life isn't over yet and finally decides to try to clean himself up and move on with his life.
* ATankardOfMooseUrine: In the manga, he complains that the alcohol he drinks is absolutely terrible before downing the glass. It's actually a plot point when at the end of the chapter he drinks wine and he notices that it actually tastes good. It's the first time he's actually drunk for the taste, as opposed to in order to get drunk.

!!The Red-Haired Laurant / Flambeau Laurant

The antagonist of the song Miezaru Ude.
* TheAlcoholic: After he loses his arm.
* EvilRedhead
* KarmicDeath: Moreso in the manga, where he's guilty of a lot more (There's a ''reason'' Laurencin wanted to kill him, after all).

The man who ultimately kills the red-headed Laurant in Miezaru Ude. In the manga, he is taken to also be the protagonist of Hiiro no Fuusha, which thus explains his motivation. Most details on him [[AllThereInTheManual only appear in the manga]].
* BadassLongRobe: When he's grownup and kills the red-headed Laurant. Not that it takes that much badassery to kill someone drunk to the gills, but still. He did it in a badass fashion.
* BestServedCold: Against the red-headed Laurant.
* ButYourWingsAreBeautiful: Ciel, the girl he tries to run away from the village with, likes the mark on the back of his neck, seeing it as like a pair of tiny wings.
* CycleOfRevenge: Spin and spin, o red windmill...
* DistinguishingMark: A red patch on the back of his neck that appears when blood runs to his head. He hides it for fear that the other kids will see it as a MarkOfTheBeast - and indeed they do search him for one at the beginning of the manga.
* HatesBeingTouched
* HeartwarmingOrphan: He's surrounded by them when he's growing up and would be one himself if he would smile once in a while.
* MirthlessLaughter: After he kills the red-headed Laurant.
* MomentOfWeakness: Running away from the red-headed Laurant and thus leaving Ciel to die.
* OrphanageOfLove: He was raised in one until his village was attacked.
* PerpetualFrowner
* SurvivorGuilt
* TroubledButCute
* UnresolvedSexualTension: Between him and Ciel.

-->'''Played by:''' YUUKI

The protagonist of the song "Hoshikuzu no Kawahimo".

* [[ABoyAndHisX A Girl And Her Dog]]
* IllGirl: She's nearly blind and is going to go completely blind.
* MeaningfulName: In story. Her mother named her "Etoile", meaning "star" so that her path would always sparkle like the stars. This became something of a bitter joke to her later, since due to her poor eyesight, she's never actually been able to see the stars.
* MissingMom: Her mother is implied to have died, and since Pleut has the same voice as her mom, it's become a common fan theory that her mom was reincarnated as Pleut.

!!Auguste Laurant
-->'''Played by:''' Jimang

The protagonist of the song "Tenshi no Chōzō". He is a talented and famous sculptor who falls into despair after his wife's death in childbirth.
* YouShouldHaveDiedInstead: In the manga, his initial reaction to his wife's DeathByChildbirth was to come close to killing his child due to said child having taken her away.

-->'''Played by:''' YUUKI

The protagonist of the song "Utsukushiki Mono".
* GirlishPigtails: Both in the manga and in the album illustrations, although it's difficult to see in the latter.
* IconicItem: Her harmonica.
* WomanInWhite: In the album illustrations.

!!Loraine de Saint-Laurent
-->'''Played by:''' REMI

The protagonist of the song "Yorokobi to Kanashimi no Budōshu".
* CharacterOverlap: She and the unnamed bride in ''Elysion'' are implied to be the same person. This is also the interpretation the manga adaptation takes.
* ImpoverishedPatrician: From this sort of family, which is why her father insists that she marry a rich man rather than the poor vineyard-worker whom she truly loves.
* {{Red Headed Hero}}ine: Her character design in the manga, and possibly in the album illustrations, but it's hard to tell in the latter.
* RunawayFiancee: Implied in the song, definitely the case in the manga.
* StarCrossedLovers: With the servant (named Neige in the manga).

-->'''Played by:''' Jimang

One of the characters in the song "Tasogare no Kenja". Borders on SupportingProtagonist of the song.
* EccentricMentor
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep
* GoodWithNumbers: Put this guy together with [[Series/SesameStreet The Count]] in a locked room, and we may or not have some serious mathematical breakthroughs, but certainly, everything down to the seconds they'd spent together in that room would be counted.

-->[[spoiler: "Nevertheless, go forth and conquer, my children."]]

The goddess of fate. As narrated in "Shinwa -Mythos-", She was the first being that emerged from [[VoidBetweenTheWorlds Chaos]] then created the world as we know it, including Death a.k.a Thanatos, her youngest child, hence her name "The Mother of All Life". Although she is a very important character, she never actually appears in the album. [[spoiler: Though the bonus track "Kami no Hikari -Moira-" seems to have been sung from her perspective.]]

* {{Expy}}: The fact that she is basically a Queen of the Gods, ruling over the heavens and all things in the world, is a clear indication that she is derived from ol' [[ClassicalMythology Zeus]], specifically his aspect as Zeus Moiragetes, the ruler of Fate. She is also the Chaos' oldest "child" and a mother deity type, which also bears some resemblance to Gaia.
* SheWhoMustNotBeSeen
* YouCantFightFate: It's implied that ''every single thing'' happening in this album (or perhaps the Sound Horizon universe as a whole) is all according to her design [[spoiler:, which would mean that Thanatos' whole rebellion is a ShaggyDogStory from the '''very start''']].

--> '''Played by:''' Revo

-->"Moira ... if you continue to manipulate lives ... I will continue to save every living being by continuing to bring death to them."

The god of death. He hates Moira for bringing suffering to humans, so he plans to overthrow her.
* TheChooserOfTheOne
* DarkIsNotEvil: He is dressed head-to-toe in blackish purple and the underworld he ruled over is dark and gloomy, but he had no traditionally "evil" intentions whatsoever.
* TheDreaded: The narrator of Thanatos' IAmSong "Meiou" stated (in [[GratuitousEnglish English]]) that "the living are terrified by the real God of Death". The Japanese translation of this narration states something along the lines of him being "The [[AnthropomorphicPersonification very existence]] of [[TheGrimReaper Death]] feared by humankind".
* {{Expy}}: Sans his ambitions to overthrow Heaven, he is clearly an amalgamation of both ClassicalMythology's Thanatos (who is the son of the Night herself rather than Fate) and Hades, the Lord of the Dead (who is the older brother of the ruler of Heaven rather than his son).
* HeWhoFightsMonsters[=/=]NotSoDifferent: He hates Moira for manipulating people's lives and bringing suffering to them, but his plan to overthrow her involves him doing the exact same things to Elef.
* RageAgainstTheHeavens[=/=]ScrewDestiny: His plan to defeat Moira.

Two mysterious young girls who are most likely Thanatos' closest attendants. Named after the 12th (Mu) and 21st (Phi) [[GratuitousGreek letters of the Greek alphabet]]. Mu is the ponytailed one, while Phi is the braided one.

* AlphabeticalThemeNaming: Like Thanatos' other attendants, they are named after two of the letters from the Greek alphabet.
* GreekChorus: To Thanatos, the same way the Harmonias are for the rest of the track after "Jinsei wa Ireko Ningyou -Matryoshka-". These girls only appear in one track, though.

!!Elefseus ("Elef") / [[spoiler: Amethystos]]
-->'''Played by:''' Revo (adult), Creator/{{Yukana}} (child)

-->"Despite all mortals being pitiful slaves of Fate,
-->Nonetheless did they enslave each other; what a dry farce!"

The protagonist of the whole album. He used to lead a happy life with his twin sister, Misia, and his parents, Polydeuces and Elphina [[spoiler: who are actually attendants to their real parents, [[SecretLegacy The King and Queen of Arcadia.]]]], until [[BigBad Scorpius]] suddenly barged into their home, killed them, and sold Elef and Misia both into slavery. Ever since then, his life has been nothing but endless misery. Elef managed, though, under the guidance of a wise poet, [[TheMentor Milos]]. After their separation, Elef sets out in search for his twin sister in the island of Lesbos. [[spoiler: Guess what, he didn't manage. When he arrived in the island, all he ever managed to meet was Misia's stone-cold, drenched body. And guess who did this--the same person who killed his parents. This was the final straw for him, but a first success for Thanatos, who intended to turn Elef into his vessel after giving him misery after misery that will make him hate Fate herself...]]

* [[spoiler: AlternateContinuity: Instead of the liberator of slaves, invulnerable warrior, and vessel for the God of Death he was in ''Moira'', in ''Nein'' he is this goofy young man who couldn't be bothered to care less about the slaves whose fate he shared once. Granted, he's implied to have become a pirate mate, but with Misia alive, his purpose has been completed; what more should he do besides taking care of her?]]
* AnimalMotifs: The wolf, symbolizing his loneliness, and the bird, symbolizing his desire for freedom.
* TheChosenOne: And it sure as hell ''ain't'' a good thing for him.
* CosmicPlaything: And it happens for ''a reason''. His misery is part of [[TheChooserOfTheOne Thanatos']] plans to sabotage his mother's reign.
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Nein'', he gets relegated to the position of deuteragonist [[spoiler: as Misia gets the spotlight.]]
* {{Expy}}: His character seems to have been derived from several notable figures both in ClassicalMythology and classical history:
** He and Misia are twins [[spoiler: with a DivineParentage, and Misia dies during the course of the story, leaving him alone]], and they are symbolized by the constellation Gemini, which should remind you of the Dioscouri a.k.a Castor and Pollux.
** He is an invulnerable, dreaded warrior with terrible powers granted by a divine figure, [[RoaringRampageOfRevenge fueled by vengeance after the death of his loved one]], and the main protagonist of the whole epic/album. This is clearly a dead ringer for [[Literature/TheIliad Achilles]].
** His rage at [[spoiler: Misia's [[HumanSacrifice sacrifice]] at the hands of Scorpius]] is reminiscent of Clytemnestra's when her daughter Iphigenia is sacrificed to Artemis by her own husband, Agamemnon.
** And lastly, the fact that he, a former slave, liberated his former comrades and made them his army is clearly a homage to Spartacus, the famous gladiator from Thrace and leader of the infamous slave rebellion against the Roman Empire.
* [[spoiler: MeaningfulRename]]: When he [[spoiler: invades Ilion as retribution for Misia's death]], he [[spoiler: changes his name to Amethystos]].

--> '''Played by''': Minami Kuribayashi, Kurosawa Tomoyo (Nein)

-->"In order to test us, the heavens showered us with nothing but trials.
-->At that...we mortals have no choice but to simply accept them without question..."

Elefseus' twin sister. She is stated to have been a [[PluckyGirl tomboy, cheerful girl]] during childhood, but subsequent traumatic events mellowed her out [[BreakTheCutie drastically]]. Her parents killed, Misia and her twin brother are sold as slaves as a result, the result being Misia unwillingly inducted as an apprentice to the [[TheOldestProfession hetaira]]. Elef and Misia are briefly reunited at Ilion and attempted to run away by way of a ship, but a terrible storm shipwrecked it, separating the twins. Misia drifted ashore on the island of Lesbos, domain of the Star Goddess, severely traumatized.

Thankfully, a wise poet, Sophia, found her. The poetess then nurtured her into a graceful young woman who is unafraid of what Fate will give her. And so Misia became the Star Goddess' priestess as she patiently waits for the day where she can once again meet her brother...

[[spoiler: ...until she is sacrificed to the Water God by the same man who killed her parents, for the exact same reason as his deed before: furthering his own ambitions.]]
[[spoiler: Her death fueled Elef's hatred towards his fate--exactly as Thanatos had planned it, sparking a war between the God of Death against the Goddess of Fate, his mother.]]
[[spoiler: But in ''Nein'', these didn't happen. Misia decided to run away from her captors into the forest, where she was finally granted her wish: meeting Elef. Escaping Lesbos, the two decided to live together to the fullest, abandoning everything they should have cared for in the end.]]

* AscendedExtra: She isn't really an extra in ''Moira'', being the deuteragonist, but she did took her brother's place in ''Nein'' as the principal protagonist.
* TheAntiNihilist: Taught by Sophia, Misia doesn't want to make a fuss about everything that has transpired in her life.
** TheFatalist
* BreakTheCutie: Prevented from breaking ''too much'' by Sophia, who taught her that hardship is something to be both embraced and endured.
** [[spoiler: KillTheCutie]]
* Expy: Like her brother and most characters from the album, she is an amalgamation of several notable figures from Classical history and mythology:
** It is stated many times in the album that Misia is fond of the moon reflected on the water's surface. Her namesake is derived from the Greek goddess of the Moon. You do the math.
** She and Elef are twins [[spoiler: with a DivineParentage, and she dies during the course of the story, leaving her twin brother alone]], and they are symbolized by the constellation Gemini, which should remind you of the Dioscouri a.k.a Castor and Pollux.
** [[spoiler: Her sacrifice, conducted to further a single man's power-hungry ambitions, is eerily reminiscent of Iphigenia's sacrifice by her own father, Agamemnon, so that he can advance his ship to attack Troy.]]
** She is [[spoiler: an oracle forcibly abducted from a temple after foreseeing her own death, much like Cassandra from the myths (not to be confused with the Cassandra from this album).]]
* [[spoiler: HeroicSacrifice: Offered herself in place of her friend Phyllis as sacrifice for the Water God.]] [[spoiler: In ''Nein'' she averted this herself, resulting in Phyllis' death.]]
* [[NiceGuy Nice Girl]]: You can't really say otherwise of her [[spoiler: when she offers herself as a HumanSacrifice in place of her friend]].
* PluckyGirl: From what little we can see of her child self in "Unmei no Futago", she seems to be the tomboyish, braver twin [[BreakTheCutie before her parents are killed and she was made a slave]]. After getting through all of those ordeal and ending up shipwrecked, she became much more quieter and demure. [[spoiler: For the first half of "Ai to Iu Nano Toga" in ''Nein'', she got her kicks back.]]

* EvilLaugh: Being voiced by the great Creator/NorioWakamoto, it shouldn't be a surprise that he pulled this off magnificently. [[spoiler: Even more so in ''Nein'', seeing as he had conquered Greece and all.]]
* SonOfAWhore: He is the son of the king and one of his concubines, which is why he is not accepted as a legitimate heir.

They are educated as high as a woman at that time could, and are allowed to partake in scholarly discussions and votings, to boot.
* LadyInRed: Cassandra. In the live concert at least. In official artworks, she wore [[GracefulLadiesLikePurple Tyrian purple]].
* MeaningfulName: Fans of Myth/ClassicalMythology know, or will know sooner or later, that Cassandra was that priestess who was [[CassandraTruth cursed]] by Apollo for [[DisproportionateRetribution refusing to have sex with him]]. Sophia appreciates the world the way it is and prefers not to curse it for not being what it could be, as she believes that [[YouCantFightFate the thread of Moira is not spun by men.]]

* AmbiguouslyGay: She is an {{Expy}} of Sappho, after all, and secluded herself on an island surrounded by young women, including Misia. Every time she sings about women, you can't help but feel all the [[LesYay hints]] strewn about:
-->"The girl's cheeks shone brilliantly in a rosy hue, how beautiful it is
-->But the young bud is drenched in sorrow, yet to be open"
-->"The duration in which young maidens finally bloom in sweet fragrance is short
-->However, with glowing lips they sung of their crimson love; for them to scatter beautifully is, too, their life [fate]."
* TheAntiNihilist: This is ultimately how she perceives the world, and passed this wisdom on to Misia.
* ChekhovsGun: Is mentioned in a passing by Cassandra one track earlier than her appearance in "Shi to Nageki no Kaze no Miyako -Ilion-".
* {{Expy}}: As stated above, she is based on [[ Sappho]], the famous poetess also from Lesbos whose homoerotic poetry helped associate her name and the island's with the female sexual identity. Though in this album, her sexuality is never explicitly shown or stated.
