The various allies that have helped Sonic on his many journeys through the years.

[[folder:Mighty the Armadillo]]
-> '''Debut:''' ''VideoGame/SegaSonicTheHedgehog''

!!!!!!Voiced by Yusuke Numata (Japanese, 1993)

One of the more obscure ''Sonic'' characters, Mighty the Armadillo is an old friend of Sonic the Hedgehog. He is similar in speed to Sonic, but is apparently stronger, hence his name. For many years, he only appeared in two games: 1993's ''VideoGame/SegaSonicTheHedgehog'' Arcade game, and ''VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix'' in 1995. He also appeared on a missing poster in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''. It's only in 2018 that he finally managed to return to the series as a playable character in ''VideoGame/SonicMania''. He also has made infrequent appearances in the Archie ''Sonic'' comic series.

For Archie's Version of Mighty, [[Characters/ArchieComicsSonicTheHedgehogKnucklesAndTheChaotix click here.]]
* TheBusCameBack: Mighty will make a comeback as a playable character in the UpdatedRerelease of ''VideoGame/SonicMania''.
* TheCameo: On a missing poster in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''. ''VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix'' being supposedly deemed [[CanonDiscontinuity non-canon]] (which has since been [[FlipFlopOfGod reversed]]) may be why said poster says "Missing since 1993" rather than "Missing since 1995".
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Has not made an appearance in the franchise since at least ''VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix.'' [[{{Lampshade Hanging}} Lampshaded]] by his missing poster in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''. He later returned after a twenty-three year long absence in ''Sonic Mania''. A lot of this may have to do with unexpected reactions in the audience to certain characters. Ray and Mighty were positioned to be part of the series main cast by character designer Manabu Kusunoki. However internal discussions and a company-wide submission contest ended up with Tails usurping Ray's spot as Sonic's number one sidekick. Mighty on the other hand was seemingly undone by Takashi Thomas Yuda inventing Knuckles to be a minor one-shot antagonistic rival character only for the character to become an EnsembleDarkhorse that appeared throughout the series more frequently than anticipated. Mighty, who has an [[SuperStrength extremely similar theme]] and [[AloofAlly personality]], no doubt suffered as a result.
* DivergentCharacterEvolution:
** If early artwork from the canceled FallingBlocks puzzle arcade game ''[=SegaSonic=] Bros.'' is any indication, it is likely Mighty's earliest conception was simply a red version of Sonic intended to be his brother. Manabu Kusunoki took the character's palette and reworked it into a more distinct character design for ''[=SegaSonic=] the Hedgehog'', deciding on an armadillo since it was roughly the same size as a hedgehog and equally obscure in Japanese culture.
** This is also inverted with Mighty's design. Concept art shows that at one point Mighty was taller and skinnier than Sonic. His current design has the same build as Sonic.
* InformedAbility: He is apparently a strong character, hence his name, but it is never shown in the games.
* MeaningfulName: Mainly in the ''Archie'' comics.
* RemovableShell: In [=SegaSonic=] arcade, his shell will fly off of him during a fall!
* SuperSpeed: Roughly as fast as Sonic in his game appearances.
* SuperStrength: Again, in the ''Archie'' comics.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: He is used as a stand-in for Sonic in ''VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix'', with his sprites being obvious doll-ups of Sonic. This was because Sega of Japan feared that the 32X flopping would've hurt the series brand image if Sonic headlined the game, forcing them to replace Sonic with Mighty in-game.
* TechnicalPacifist: His backstory in the games claims this.
* WallJump: In his Chaotix appearance.

[[folder:Ray the Flying Squirrel]]
-> '''Debut:''' ''VideoGame/SegaSonicTheHedgehog''

!!!!!!Voiced by Hinako Yoshino (Japanese, 1993)

Another of Sonic's early friends. Like with Mighty, he used to be missing from the franchise ever since his sole game appearance in 1993 (save for a nod to him in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'') before showing up again as a playable character in 2018 with ''VideoGame/SonicMania''. He also has made infrequent appearances in the Archie ''Sonic'' comics.

For Archie's Version of Ray, [[Characters/ArchieComicsSonicTheHedgehogKnucklesAndTheChaotix click here.]]
* TheBusCameBack: Ray will make a comeback as a playable character in the UpdatedRerelease of ''VideoGame/SonicMania''.
* ButtMonkey: Ray's animations in ''[=SegaSonic=]'' are by far the clumsiest of all three characters.
* TheCameo: Appears alongside Mighty on a missing poster in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Even more so than Mighty. Mighty at least got two game appearances! In fact, it took nearly ''twenty-five years'' for him to appear in the games again!
* DivergentCharacterEvolution: If early artwork from the canceled FallingBlocks puzzle arcade game ''[=SegaSonic=] Bros.'' is any indication, it is likely Ray's earliest conception was simply a yellow version of Sonic intended to be his brother. Manabu Kusunoki took the character's palette and reworked it into a more distinct character design for ''[=SegaSonic=] the Hedgehog'', deciding on a squirrel since it would have roughly the same body proportions as a hedgehog.
* {{Flight}}: Allegedly, but it is not shown [[InformedAbility in-game.]]
* MythologyGag: Ray's ''Sonic Mania'' redesign gives him double-striped blue shoes, matching the kind he wears in the Archie comics.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: To Tails. Justified, because he was originally going to be Sonic's sidekick before Tails replaced him. Manabu Kusunoki submited the character to be Sonic's sidekick in an internal company contest for ''Sonic 2''. However, Yasushi Yamaguchi's concept for "Miles the Tanuki" (latter reworked into Tails the Fox) won instead.

A band of misfits constantly trying to earn a living. Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy Bee initially made their debut being captured by Dr. Eggman, but Knuckles managed to save them and the four of them along with now defunct member, Mighty the Armadillo drove Eggman out of the island. The crew didn't appear for almost a decade until ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' which gave them all new redesigns and seemingly ignoring the team's history with Knuckles. Since then, they've appeared occasionally taking on any job they can to support themselves.

These are a rather dysfunctional bunch, often serving as the PluckyComicRelief with their antics. Vector is the leader and the one who makes the big decisions on jobs; he's loud, immature, and somewhat of a seedy individual but nonetheless has a good heart and even willing to do a job without pay (Much to Espio's chagrin). Espio is the team's ninja expert and Vector's right hand man; a quiet and serious minded individual who constantly hones his skills as a ninja. He prefers not to use his skills for dishonorable means, but constantly goaded into doing so by his peers. Charmy is the team's youngest member, and by far its most immature. He spends most of his time being a typical kid; hyperactive and constantly getting on Vector's nerves, but he does look up to his peers and does occasionally prove useful in the team's efforts.

Tropes applying to Heavy and Bomb don't appear here; they have their own sections [[Characters/SonicTheHedgehogMinorCharacters here]].

* AnimalGenderBender: Charmy is a male bee, but he has a stinger.
* AntiHeroTeam: They will do good, but they expect to be paid-handsomely (and have no qualms punishing free loaders). Vector at least has his better moments, such as finding a kid's lost toy for free.
* BadassAdorable: Charmy.
* BadassBaritone: In English, Espio sports one of the deepest voices among his peers despite only being 16 (compare this to similarly-aged characters or even Vector, who is four years Espio's senior). Coupled with his lack of eccentricities, this only serves to make Espio come across as even more serious. He's more of a tenor in Japanese.
* BewareMyStingerTail: Charmy, of course.
* BigEater: Vector, who dreams of having 50 five-course meals in ''Sonic Free Riders''.
* BigThinShortTrio: Vector (Big), Espio (Thin), and Charmy (Short).
* BrattyHalfPint: Charmy, much to Vector's annoyance.
* BreathWeapon: Vector in ''Heroes''. He can breathe fire, musical notes, and bubblegum bombs.
* BrownNote: They sound ''dreadful''.
** In the Olympic crossovers, Vector's special moves are augmented by musical notes.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: The Chaotix are goofy, clumsy, and mostly inefficient as detectives, but they always get the job done.
* ButtMonkey: Vector in particular in the Archie comics, though the whole team often act as luckless comic relief in most incarnations (particularly in ''Sonic X'').
* CanonDiscontinuity: Their classic selves in ''[[VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix Knuckles' Chaotix]]'', although this is susceptible to FlipFlopOfGod -- according to [[WordOfGod Takashi Iizuka]], the Chaotix were reimagined and reintroduced as "new characters" in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''; however, he later [[ShrugOfGod rescinded]] this.
* CanonImmigrant: [[MarthDebutedInSmashBros Charmy Bee]] debuted in a [[Manga/SonicTheHedgehog manga]] featured in the September 1992 issue of ''Shogaku Ninensei'' (Second Grade), [[YouDontLookLikeYou though he looked very different.]]
* CastHerd: They are rarely ever seen apart. Exceptions are listed below:
** Espio is playable in ''VideoGame/SonicTheFighters'', while the others don't appear.
** In ''Sonic Free Riders'', Vector is part of Team Rose, but the rest of Team Chaotix is neither seen nor mentioned.
** Espio works alongside Silver in ''Sonic Rivals 2''. At least Vector actually has something to do with this game.
** Vector's the only member who shows up in ''VideoGame/SonicChronicles'', but the other two get mentioned (and even then, ''only'' as "Team Chaotix").
** Vector is the only playable one in the ''VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames'' series, but Espio and Charmy routinely appear as officials or [=NPCs=]. Espio becomes playable in the 2016 Rio installment, but only for the triple jump.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Charmy. Vector has his moments as well, especially in ''Sonic X''.
* TheComicallySerious: Espio's attempts to uphold a mystical and dignified composure are usually destroyed by his wackier teammates.
* ComicTrio: Vector is the schemer, Charmy is the dumb follower, Espio is reasonable but powerless.
* ConjoinedEyes: Vector and Charmy.
* CrossdressingVoices: Charmy, again.
* EyesOfGold: Espio.
** Vector's eyes have taken on a more golden appearance over the years. They were vermilion when he re debuted in ''Heroes'', but now, orange-gold would be a more accurate description.
* FaceOfAThug: As a big buff crocodile, Vector looks somewhat rough, but he's really a [[BruiserWithASoftCenter big softie]].
* FlechetteStorm: Espio does this in ''Anime/SonicX'' with [[StuffBlowingUp explosive shuriken.]]
* {{Flight}}: Charmy is almost always in flight, and is the Flight of the team.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble:
** Vector ('''Sanguine'''): He's the charismatic yet easily annoyed leader of Team Chaotix (Chaotix Detective Agency). Although he's much older than Charmy, he acts just as loud, obnoxious, and childish as him. That leads to a whole lot of petty arguments between the two of them. He has a short temper and can be very bossy and materialistic. Despite his intimidating appearance and his flaws, he's a nice guy who can be mildly easygoing and has strong morals despite being focused on making money.
** Charmy ('''Choleric'''): He's a hyperactive little bee who is always being a nuisance, especially towards Vector. He can be obnoxious, materialistic (he gets that from Vector) and scatterbrained. On the other hand, he's kind-hearted and very helpful to the team. Like most kids his age, it's expected of him to act this way.
** Espio ('''Melancholic'''): He's the cynical and somewhat arrogant member of the team who tries his best to do his job efficiently and remain apathetic to his associates's constant squabbles. He's a no-nonsense individual who's soft-spoken and aloof. He's disciplined, level-headed, and tends to talk in a sort of businesslike manner.
* FreudianTrio: Vector is the Id, Charmy is the Ego, Espio is the Superego.
* FuumaShuriken: Espio uses large shuriken in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* GeniusBruiser: Vector is both the muscle and the brains behind the bunch.
* GeniusDitz: Vector might seem like the DumbMuscle, but he's still a great detective. [[spoiler:In Sonic Heroes, he knew all along that Dr. Eggman was their client, and in Sonic Generations, he's the first to suspect that someone might be controlling the Time Eater, a hunch that later proves to be correct.]]
** Alternately, Espio is the smartest member, but Vector makes the {{Zany Scheme}}s in order to lead the group; depending on whether or not you believe ''Sonic X'' or ''Sonic Heroes''.
* GogglesDoNothing: Charmy rarely, if ever, wears his helmet-goggles over his eyes.
* {{Greed}}: Charmy and especially Vector love cold hard cash.
* GreenEyedMonster: In ''Anime/SonicX'' at least, the Chaotix are occasionally shown to resent Sonic for his popularity and bravado, while they struggle to make ends meet as detectives.
* HeroWorshipper: From Charmy's point of view, Shadow is the greatest animal to walk this planet.
* HotBlooded: Espio is described like this in the manual of ''Knuckles Chaotix''. "He has a hot temper and an intense drive in everything he does, and sometimes his friend Charmy Bee has to remind him of his manners." Ironic, considering their modern-day characterizations.
* ImageSong: "[[VideoGame/SonicHeroes Team Chaotix]]"
* InformedAbility: Charmy is said to have excellent tracking skills, which is the reason Vector and Espio put up with him.
* InformedPoverty: Vector is apparently so broke that he can't even afford dinner, which is his reason for participating in the Grand Prix in ''Sonic Free Riders''.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Vector, Espio, and Charmy are 20, 16, and 6, respectively.
* InterspeciesRomance: Between Vector and Vanilla.
* {{Invisibility}}: Espio via blending in with his surroundings. Named Ninja Art: Camouflage in ''Sonic Generations''.
* KidAppealCharacter: Charmy.
* KidHero: Charmy is tied with Cream as the youngest recurring character in the series, being only six years old. At sixteen, Espio is young enough to qualify, too.
* {{Keet}}: Charmy.
* TheLancer: Espio.
* LargeAndInCharge: Vector is much taller than the rest of the team. He's also the second-tallest heroic character, second only to Big the Cat.
* LightningBruiser: Vector initially started as this before he eventually became a MightyGlacier.
* LikesOlderWomen: Vector for Cream's mom Vanilla.
* LimitBreak: Their Team Blast, "Chaotix Recital", in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* MakeMeWannaShout: One of Vector's {{Breath Weapon}}s.
* ManChild: Vector, though the oldest of the team, has moments where he doesn't act quite his age. Arguing constantly with six-year-old Charmy doesn't help much. Though it helps that Vector is still young, only being 20 years old.
* MeaningfulName: Espio's name comes from either "espionage", or the Spanish word for "I spy." Vector was initially this, due to being able to air-dash in eight different directions in his ''Chaotix'' appearance (hence "Vector") but this was scrapped for his ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' reinvention, making his name another OddNameOut.
** Vector can hurl Classic Sonic along a trajectory in ''Generations'', making his name meaningful again.
** And it turns out that Vector has been called that since 1991 officially, so neither of those definitions were accurate. You can count vectors of sound waves, though, which fits in with the conceptual band motif.
* MrViceGuy: Vector is not only the greediest, he is gluttonous and somewhat short-tempered. Beneath it all, however, he's a playful softie, and implied to take a few free cases for those who deserve it.
* MusicalAssassin: Their [[LimitBreak Team Blast]] in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' destroys robots by singing and playing instruments.
* {{Ninja}}: Espio.
* NeverBareheaded: Charmy has never been seen without his pilot helmet on his head.
** Similarly, Vector is rarely seen without his headphones.
* OddNameOut: Unlike most of the characters' names, Charmy's doesn't seem particularly [[MeaningfulName meaningful]]. Vector's name was initially meaningful, but became this as of ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
** In the original western bios at least, Charmy was stated as having a polite demeanor about him, ie. a ''charm''ing personality. Given his [[BrattyHalfPint later incarnation's character]], his name could almost be considered ironic.
* OnlySaneMan: Charmy is a hyperactive child, and Vector acts like a child most of the time. Espio, on the other hand, is very quiet and serious.
** At times, Vector can become this to Charmy and Espio due to his detective skills and focus on finishing a job cutting through any distractions that may happen. He also acts as this when hired by Team Rose for ''VideoGame/SonicFreeRiders''.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Though Vector will occasionally do a job for free if he's feeling good enough, much to Espio's annoyance.
* OverlyLongTongue: Espio in ''VideoGame/SonicTheFighters''. Apparently Sonic Team forgot he could do that, as he's never shown this ability since then.
* ParentalSubstitute: Vector & Espio are pretty much Charmy's legal guardians.
* PerpetualFrowner: Espio. Considering that he's serious, he doesn't smile that much. It also doesn't help the fact he's surrounded by the loudmouth Vector and the scatterbrained Charmy.
* PerpetualPoverty: It seems like no matter what they do, they can't seem to make enough to pay for their expenses.
* PetalPower: Espio can make a storm of leaves in ''Heroes''.
* PlayingWithFire: One of Vector's attacks in ''Sonic Heroes'' has him spitting out flames.
* PluckyComicRelief: When they're playable, they usually do it for the money and not for saving the world.
* PowerTrio: Vector is the brawn, Espio's the brains, and Charmy's the speed.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Espio.
* SavedForTheSequel: Vector the Crocodile was actually intended to appear as a keyboardist in the original ''[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog1 Sonic the Hedgehog]]'', along with other members of a musical band featuring Sonic. The band was apparently meant to appear together in the sound test, the startup screen, and the ending sequence, as well as individually throughout the game, but was cut due to time constraints in favor of the iconic "SEGA" chant from Japanese television commercials, which ended up taking 1/8 of the 4 megabit ROM. Vector was brought back for the games, but the other bandmates -- Max the Monkey, Mach the Rabbit, and Sharps the Chicken -- weren't so lucky.
* ShoutOut: In ''VideoGame/SonicFreeRiders'', Vector has a green and black motorcycle called Hard Boiled. [[Series/KamenRiderDouble Why does that sound familliar?]]
* SmallAnnoyingCreature: Charmy.
* SpannerInTheWorks: During the Last Story of ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'', while the three are trying to hack into data disks they discovered earlier, Charmy manages to activate a recording left by Professor Gerald when he was still sane wherein he and Maria urge Shadow to fight back against the Black Arms. Their inspirational words give Shadow the strength to break free of Black Doom's control and fight on.
* SpeciesSurname: For some reason, Charmy's name is Charmy Bee, and not Charmy ''the'' Bee.
* TheStoic: Espio, who usually shares StraightMan duties with Vector.
* SuperSpeed: Espio is the "Speed" of the three.
* SuperStrength: Vector is the "Power" of the three.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: Vector is this in his 1991 design for the Sonic Band thanks to having a thicker, more muscular shape and a significantly darker color palate.
* TeleportersAndTransporters: Charmy can do this by pollinating flowers.
* ThePowerOfRock: Their Team Blast attack in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes''.
* ThinkingOutLoud: When getting ranked it ''Sonic Heroes'' and Espio is the one who has the most points, he will almost always talk like he is talking to one person; when they get an E rank, he will say "Insulting. Your training has been a waste of time.", D rank; "Be on guard! Focus, and prepare yourself." He also always looks directly at the camera, implying he is either talking to the viewer or he could be talking to himself.
* TokenWholesome: These characters wear more clothing than other males, with Charmy wearing the most.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Charmy's is, fittingly, honey. Vector has a huge appetite, but bubblegum seems to be his personal favorite. Espio supposedly likes apples.
* TranquilFury: Espio, being TheStoic, is perpetually this. Vector surprisingly gets an effective moment of this in ''Heroes''. [[spoiler: After finding out Eggman hasn't got the fee for their job, he calmly scolds the Doctor for making promises he can't keep, and then sends [[BewareMyStingerTail Charmy to do his worst]].]]
* WallCrawl: Of the three characters that can use the triangle jump in ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'',[[note]]Sonic and Shadow being the other two[[/note]] Espio is the only who can stick to walls indefinitely. Being a ninja chameleon probably helps.
** In ''[[VideoGame/KnucklesChaotix Knuckles' Chaotix]]'', Vector was able to grip onto and scale walls in a similar way to Knuckles by Vector Dashing into them. Unlike Knuckles, however, you had to keep the jump button held down or else he'd lose his grip and fall.

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''
!!!!!!Voiced by Kaori Aso (Japanese), Elara Distler (English, 1999-2001), Karen Neill (English, ''Anime/SonicX'')

A mysterious girl from the distant past with a connection to Chaos.

* AllLovingHero: She acts as an assistant to all the playable cast in ''Sonic Adventure'', even Gamma pre-HeelFaceTurn. Despite him helping Eggman power Chaos, the imagery she grants Gamma implies she is sympathetic towards [[MinionWithAnFInEvil his position.]]
* AndIMustScream: Her original method of dealing with Chaos was sealing it and herself inside the Master Emerald until Eggman shattered it several thousand years later. She was planning to try again before Sonic decided otherwise.
* ApologeticAttacker: Although it's done through the use of recycled quotes, Tikal seems to hate harming her opponents in ''Sonic Adventure 2'', begging them to stand down and even flat-out apologizing for attacking them with her Hammer Drop special.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: Though she "sacrificed" herself to seal Chaos, her "Deadness" level is rather vague and she still seems pretty solid.
%%* BareYourMidriff
* BigGood: of ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'', having previously saved the world from Chaos, and being the protagonists' constant SpiritAdvisor.
* TheChiefsDaughter: She's not too happy about it when he threatens the Chao, though.
%%* EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses
* ExpositionFairy: Her flashbacks explain the backstory of Sonic Adventure.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: She loves little creatures, sentient robots, and the Chao.
* HeroicSacrifice: She sealed herself and Chaos away with the Master Emerald's power to prevent further destruction from happening.
* InvisibleAnatomy: Despite wearing sandals and having five fingers, she has no toes, oddly enough.
* LastOfHerKind: After Chaos wipes out the Echidna clan.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-pHq146AZE Tikal's Theme]]. On top of playing when she appears physically, it also plays as she's about to send a character to the past. Also counts as LongSongShortScene, even in the game's truncated form you never hear it in full.
* LightningBruiser: In ''Adventure 2'', she can dish out blows like Knuckles and Rouge (albeit with less range) and is moderately faster than either of them.
* MartialPacifist: As shown in the likes of ''Sonic Adventure 2'' and ''Sonic Runners'', Tikal can run, jump, glide, and fight just like the rest of her Knuckles tribe brethren. Though she never seems to be very happy about resorting to using such force.
%%* MysteriousWaif
* NiceGirl: Gentle, kind-hearted, docile, loving, peaceful, and a pacifist.
* NoNameGiven: Never once introduces herself to Sonic, but despite this he still learned her name somehow.
* OutOfFocus: Chaos continues to physically appear in the series, albeit rarely. Tikal on the other hand is only mentioned or cameos as part of a background decoration.
* PromotedToPlayable: She's playable in the 2-player mode of ''Sonic Adventure 2''. She even became playable as part of the ''Sonic Adventure'' event in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners''.
* PosthumousCharacter: Of the less conventional kind. While her physical form is implied to be dead, her soul can still interact with the cast.
* PutOnABus: She's replaced by Omochao for the rest of the series as the hint advisor. She makes occasional cameo appearances, though, but [[RiddleForTheAges it's never really explained where she's gone]].
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: She's technically ''thousands'' of years old, but is physically 14.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: She seals Chaos away so he doesn't cause harm.
* SealedGoodInACan: You can only find her in flashbacks and hint orbs.
* ShockAndAwe: "Heaven's Justice" in ''Sonic Adventure 2 Battle''.
* SilkHidingSteel: Goes from absentmindedly reminiscing about her grandmother's poems and cuddling chao [[spoiler:to facing down her father and his entire army to the death to protect the Chao and the world at large]].
* SoulJar: Her soul, along with [[SealedEvilInACan Chaos]], were sealed within the Master Emerald.
* SpiritAdvisor: Her hint orbs guide the player throughout the many stages.
* StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: She's playable on occasion, which naturally has to work around the fact she's an immortal spirit. [[ForgotAboutHisPowers Oh, and flying around in that non-solid orb form just wouldn't be fair either...]]
* TeamMom: She ''tries'' to be this to her clan, but she's unfortunately unsuccessful.
* WaifFu: As gentle as she may be, she's STILL a member of the powerful Knuckles tribe and can pull off the same feats that Knuckles can.
* WhiteSheep: Of the original Echidna clan.
* WomenAreWiser: She's the token female echidna, who was smart enough to realize that her father's tampering with the Master Emerald's power was a bad idea. [[spoiler:Too bad he didn't listen.]] Reversed between her and Sonic; it is the latter who decides to deal with Chaos the more direct and effective way, allowing for a more peaceful outcome than [[AndIMustScream what her original method would have been]].
* YamatoNadeshiko: All in all, Tikal is a very graceful, gentle, and caring princess who handles herself with an air of elegance. That won't stop her from doing everything she can to protect the Chao, however.
* YouCantFightFate: Though she put up a great battle regardless of the outcome. Sonic also points this out to her regarding Chaos -- sealing him only delays the problem.

!!!!!!Voiced by Etsuko Kozakura (Japanese), Creator/LaniMinella (English, 2001-2003), Liza Jacqueline (English, ''VideoGame/SonicRiders''), Rebecca Handler (English, ''[[VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries Sonic and the Secret Rings]]''), Creator/LauraBailey (English, 2010-present)

A robotic Chao who appears in a variety of games and places to serve as an informant for characters and offer hints and advice to players [[AnnoyingVideoGameHelper whether they want it or not]]. He also works as a TV personality.

* AbnormalAmmo: One of the bonus guns in ''VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog'' is the Omochao gun, which, you guessed it, fires Omochao.
* AscendedExtra: ''VideoGame/SonicRunners'' promotes Omochao to a standard character and makes him relevant to the story, living amongst the animals and interacting with Team Sonic on a regular basis. When trouble arrives, the animals turn to Omochao, and Omochao turns to Team Sonic.
* ButtMonkey: He can be this when the player picks him up and abuses him by either throwing him at an enemy with Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, or Rouge or shooting him with Tails or Eggman.
* CaptainObvious: Omochao's advice can often be as insultingly obvious as "Keep your health meter above zero."
* TheChewToy: Players always make him get abused whenever possible.
* DramaQueen: He'll turn into this when he gets picked up or abused.
* EasyAmnesia: Can sometimes fall under this after being broken. He returns to normal very quickly, though.
* ExpositionFairy: His most prominent role, and one of the most infamous examples in video gaming.
* GrievousHarmWithABody: You can throw him as a projectile against an enemy in ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2'', which shows that he's strong enough to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AQZM_GnVaQ destroy jets]]. He's also used as a boxing glove by the Chao Walkers in the multiplayer mech shootouts.
* LargeHamAnnouncer: Becomes one in ''VideoGame/SonicFreeRiders''.
* MissionControl: To some extent in some games.
* RobotBuddy: Serves as one to everyone.
* {{Shopkeeper}}: Runs the Extreme Gear Shop in ''VideoGame/SonicRiders'' and the Skill Shop in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''.
* SmallAnnoyingCreature: Of the robotic variety.
* UnfortunateNames: ''Extremely'' unfortunate. Basically the only thing distinguishing Omochao from the other Chao is the "Omo" at the beginning... however, "Omo" is also another term for [[PottyEmergency omorashi]].
* VerbalTic: In Japanese, he nearly always adds "Chao" in the ends of his sentences.
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential: Just like anyone would do with a Chao, Omochao can be picked up, carried around everywhere, thrown about, and shot at in his debut game. He even makes for a satisfying weapon against enemy robots, complete with him breaking.
* WhatTheHellPlayer: Doing any of the abuse in VideoGameCrueltyPotential above will provoke him to call you out on your behavior.

[[folder:Maria Robotnik]]

-->''"Give them a chance to be happy!"''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''

!!!!!!Voiced by Yuri Shiratori (Japanese), Moriah Angeline (English, 2001), Rebecca Honig (English, 2005)

Granddaughter of Gerald Robotnik and cousin of Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, she was a terminally-ill patient on the Space Colony ARK and close friend of Shadow.

* AllThereInTheManual: The ''Sonic Adventure 2'' [[http://www.digitpress.com/library/manuals/dreamcast/sonic_adventure_2.pdf manual]] states that Maria is Ivo's cousin.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: At least, in ''Sonic Adventure 2''. In later entries, she was given blue shoes - even for the scenes ''[=SA2=]'' had already established her outfit for.
* FemalesAreMoreInnocent: She tries to make GUN have peace with her grandfther and wants Shadow to do the same.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Her hair matches her personality very well.
* HeroicSacrifice: She stayed on the ship while letting Shadow initiated his escape pod, as she begged him to protect all the people on Earth.
* HiddenDepths: Shadow The Hedgehog reveals she was fully aware of Black Doom, and even of Gerald's plan to use the Eclypse Canon against the Black Arms. This, in turn can give some new interpretations on why she let Shadow escape: to stop the Black Arms.
--> '''Maria:''' Don't worry grandfather, Shadow and I will protect this planet! Right, Shadow?
* IllGirl: She had [[SoapOperaDisease Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome]], which motivated her grandfather into finding a cure via his Project Shadow research.
* KilledOffForReal: Offscreen in ''Sonic Adventure 2'', but not in ''Shadow the Hedgehog'', where [=GUN=] agents shoot her.
* KillTheCutie: You get to see how she dies in ''Shadow the Hedgehog'' at the hands of GUN.
* MoralityChain: For Gerald and Shadow. The former [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope jumped off the slippery slope]] after her death and the latter was very willing to go through with the former's ColonyDrop had he not been talked out of it by Amy. He does however struggle with Black Doom's plan for revenge on the humans and Maria wanting to reconcile.
* NiceGirl: The main reason why Shadow has a soft spot for her. She's an innocent girl who just wants the world to be a better place. Even after a G.U.N agent pointed a gun at her, she still begged Shadow to help the humans.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: It's her death that starts Gerald's StartOfDarkness, and by extension the one who motivates Shadow upon awakening.
* PosthumousCharacter: She's long dead by the time the events of ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure2''.
* ASaintNamedMary: WhiteSheep Maria was a sweet and loving child. She also fit the blue clothes motif associated with the trope.
* SuddenlyAlwaysKnewThat: She's playable in two levels in in ''Shadow the Hedgehog,'' and to facilitate this she's suddenly strong enough to slap robots to death. She's still the weakest playable character by far, though, with her jump being the lowest and her speed being the slowest.
* TokenHeroicOrc: She's a member of Eggman's infamous family, but is the only one that wishes to help man instead of help machine.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: This is what Gerald thought of her, and she dies at a young age and is a pure-hearted girl.
* TrueBlueFemininity: Wears a blue dress.
* UglyGuysHotDaughter: She doesn't look anything like her grandfather Gerald, her cousin Eggman, or her descendant, Eggman Nega.
* WhiteSheep: The only known member of the Robotnik family that ''isn't'' a deranged mad scientist.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: You wouldn't tell by looking at her, but she was only twelve.

[[folder:Emerl / Gemerl]]
[[caption-width-right:230:[[labelnote:Click here to see his appearance as Gemerl.]]http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/g_merl.png[[/labelnote]]]]

-->''"Show [[spoiler:me your]] power... OR I sh...all [[spoiler:not]] ob...ey... [[spoiler:I represent all things, and]] Sha...ll [[spoiler:become Gizoid, the]] conqu...er[[spoiler:er of]] a...ll.."''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicBattle''

An ancient robot called a Gizoid that can learn to copy the traits and skills of others; Emerl is a unique model that can also absorb Chaos energies. Said to have wiped out the civilization that made him. However, he picks up better traits by hanging out with Sonic and his friends -- but has to be destroyed once his old programming kicks in.

Emerl only appears in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'', but has been referred to since. ''VideoGame/SonicAdvance 3'' has Robotnik build his own Gizoid, '''Gemerl''', that can merge with machines. It's stated that Gemerl was created from the remains of Emerl.

* AIIsACrapshoot: Played with throughout ''VideoGame/SonicBattle''. He grows out of it, quite literally. [[spoiler:[[SubvertedTrope And then gets forced back into this state thanks to Eggman, by the end]].]]
* AntiAntiChrist: To a degree. He was the most powerful of many robots with the power to level an entire civilization. Emerl, thanks to the bond he created with Sonic & co., goes on to help save the world... at the cost of his life.
* BackFromTheDead: Gemerl is actually a rebuilt and reprogrammed Emerl. [[spoiler:After being defeated, Tails gets rid of the program that made him so violently loyal to Eggman, effectively reviving Emerl.]]
* BadassAdorable: He's a robotic PhysicalGod who can defeat even the toughest enemy and can level an entire civilzation, but his InnocentBlueEyes and kind-hearted nature make him so endearing. [[spoiler:And make his demise all the more [[TearJerker tragic.]]]]
* BadassAutomaton: Possibly one of the most powerful robots in the ''Sonic'' universe. Professor Gerald theorized that he'd able to destroy the earth single-handedly. [[spoiler:He nearly did due to going mad after absorbing the Final Egg Blaster data while charged with all seven Chaos Emeralds.]]
* BookEnds: [[spoiler:At the beginning of ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'', Emerl is found deactivated on Emerald Beach by Sonic. In the ending of ''[[VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy Sonic Advance 3]]'', he's found deactivated by Cream and Vanilla on a beach which may or may not be Emerald Beach.]]
* TheCameo: His name appears as a random name for save files in ''VideoGame/SonicColors''.
* CharacterCustomization: Due to his nature as a Gizoid, you can assign him any of the characters' movesets in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'', even the {{Idle Animation}}s and color schemes.
* EvilCounterpart: It's hinted that he was this to Shadow in their past.
* {{Flight}}: Gemerl uses a jetpack to fly.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: His quote (as shown above).
* FrickinLaserBeams: Ultimate Gemerl.
* FromACertainPointOfView: The Nocturnus appear to have been drawn into the Twilight Cage when they got too powerful, thanks in no small part to their Gizoid armies -- and Emerl was the pinnacle of that technology, so he ''did'' lead to their downfall according to Professor Gerald's research.
* GoodCounterpart: To Metal Sonic in a sense, as both are robots who can copy the powers of others.
* GrowBeyondTheirProgramming: Zigzagged, in that he was programmed to do exactly that in order to override his Gizoid directives. [[spoiler:HeDidntMakeIt]].
* InnocentBlueEyes: Has blue eyes and is quite innocent to the ways of the world.
* LightningBruiser: [[spoiler:When he awakens as the Gizoid, he has access to all of his Ultimate Skills, making him stronger and faster than anyone in the game.]]
* LikeASonToMe: Inverted with Amy and Rouge, whom he calls "Mom and Mama Rouge" respectively.
* LostTechnology: Emerl and Gizoids were created with super-advanced ancient technology. ''Chronicles'' reveals that he was created by the Nocturnus echidna clan.
* MacrossMissileMassacre: As Gemerl, he can fire a hail of missiles. By the final confrontation with him, he's able to even [[TrickBullet curve their trajectory]].
* NiceGuy: He learns to be this from Sonic and friends, and very much so. It helps that he's heavily implied to have developed a soul, due to Gerald Robotnik's interference, and the days living together with Sonic and the gang.
** He had shades of this back when he was the Gizoid, as he even had a friend, Nestor the Wise. However, according to Nestor, he "always had such a temper," indicating that he was quite mercurial.
* NoMouth: He isn't drawn with a mouth.
* NotSoDifferent: Shadow acknowledges that both he and Emerl are weapons, and spends much of the story trying to destroy the Gizoid. However, Sonic rebuffs this by saying he and Emerl are alike in a different way -- both Emerl and Shadow have hearts, and couldn't willingly kill anyone.
* OneWingedAngel: Gemerl turns into an orb with flexible arms and lasers capable of stunning Super Sonic.
* OutOfFocus: Gemerl has not made an appearance since [[spoiler:being found by Tails and being reprogrammed to be good again]].
* OverrideCommand: After Emerl went out of control in the ARK and was sealed away, Professor Gerald, who couldn't find a way to destroy his core, installed a free-willed emotions-based AI program into him should Emerl ever awaken and act this way again. The phrase to activate it was "Bring hope to humanity", after Maria's [[FamousLastWords last words]].
* PetTheDog: [[spoiler:As Gemerl, he became a friendly, gentle, and supportive robot with the personality of Emerl. He even befriended Cream and came to live with her and Vanilla during the good ending of ''Sonic Advance 3''.]]
* PhysicalGod: Designed to be this from the start.
* PowerCopying: His main superpower. Comes with the territory of being a Gizoid.
* PunnyName: It's a variation on "Emerald", which was originally one of the few things he took interest in.
** Also, some versions of ''Advance 3'' [[SpellMyNameWithAnS change Gemerl's name]] in "G-Mel", a pun on ''gemel'', twin.
* RecurringBoss: once every odd-numbered stage in ''Sonic Advance 3'', just like his new master.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:The end of ''Sonic Battle'' has him accepting his fate for all of the damage he inadvertently caused when he was possessed by the Chaos Emeralds.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: In ''Anime/SonicX'', his eyes turn red when he goes beserk.
* RobotBuddy: To nearly the entire recurring cast, but mostly for Cream.
* RoboSpeak: In the Japanese version, his speech is written entirely in katakana, giving this effect. In English, it's averted, however.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveSupernaturalPowers: [[spoiler:It's likely the Chaos Emeralds are giving the ability to have all the skills regardless of the Skill Point requirement.]]
* SNKBoss: [[spoiler:When you face Emerl awakened as the Gizoid, ''[[OhCrap he has access to every Ultimate Skill available]]''.]]
** TheComputerIsACheatingBastard: [[spoiler:As the player has their Skill Points {{cap}}ped at 500, there is ''no way'' a player could replicate this feat outside of hacking.]]
* SuperpowerMeltdown: As shown in ''VideoGame/SonicBattle'' and [[spoiler:''[[VideoGame/SonicAdvanceTrilogy Sonic Advance 3]]'']], too much energy or too many copied abilities causes him to go berserk.
* ThirdEye: [[spoiler:When he awakens as the Gizoid, the eye on his forehead opens.]]
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:As Gemerl during the good ending in ''Sonic Advance 3'' after Tails reprogrammed/rebuilt him to be a friendly, gentle, and supportive robot, causing him to be much like Emerl. He's also seen to befriend Cream and came to live with her and Vanilla as well. He even patted Cream on the back after she fell and cried.]]
* TurnTheOtherCheek: After beating Eggman, he tells him that he's grateful to him for waking him up. [[spoiler:Which makes it all the more tragic when Eggman inadvertently drives him insane with power.]]
* UltimateLifeForm: While there may have been other models and varieties of Gizoids, Emerl was stated to be the ''most powerful'' of his kind. Rouge even says that Emerl was like Shadow in the sense of being the ultimate lifeform, just 4000+ years older.
* TheUnintelligible: His ''Sonic X'' counterpart speaks only in beeps and buzzes.
* VoiceChangeling: Using certain skills allows him to use voice clips of the characters he copied (excluding Chaos).
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: [[spoiler:When he's reawakened as the Gizoid after gaining emotions, and being unable to control the overwhelming power inside of him.]]
* WouldntHurtAChild: Subverted, as he eventually does fight Cream, but he outright states that the worst thing he could ever do is make a girl cry.

[[folder:Blaze the Cat]]

-->''"I am the guardian of the Sol Emeralds... It is a fate that forces me to live with my curse, my flames... Because of my powers, I have always been alone... It's also why I must do this alone! It is my responsibility!"''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}}''

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/NaoTakamori (Japanese), Bella Hudson (English, 2005-2010), Creator/LauraBailey (English, 2010-present)

A fire-wielding cat from another dimension and guardian of its own set of emeralds called Sol Emeralds. Blaze initially ended up in Sonic's world due to both of their worlds being on the verge of merging and breaking apart due to her own dimension's equivalent to Dr. Eggman, Eggman Nega. Blaze initially didn't care much for teamwork and preferred to solve her problems without anyone's aid, but thanks to bonding with Cream and Sonic reaching out to her, she eventually grew to embrace her friends and together with Sonic, stopped the two Eggmen. Afterward, she returned to her own dimension, but she does make occasional appearances now and then.

Blaze is a very introverted person; she doesn't socialize much, and even after growing fond of her friends, she generally dislikes having to rely on others. But this is just a facade to hide a very shy individual, as Blaze often gets flustered when she's forced to interact with new people. When Blaze is on duty, though, she's far more strait-laced and focused on her task. She's also rather temperamental and reckless when her buttons are pressed.

* ACupAngst: WordOfGod says she is less than thrilled about her lack of size.
* {{Adorkable}}: Whenever her [[ShrinkingViolet shyness]] or [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes fear of heights]] comes to the forefront.
* AffirmativeActionGirl: The second one after Rouge, but notably she's the first female character to explicitly be TheHero's near equal in combat, something only Knuckles and Shadow were really noticeable for before that. Doesn't get much more affirmative than that. She's also the only female character to have a SuperMode of her own.
* AFriendInNeed: Despite her antagonistic nature at first, everyone nonetheless tried to reach out to her and offer her friendship. It takes the entirety of ''VideoGame/SonicRush'' for her to accept.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: She was shunned and made fun of her pyrokinetic powers. Though, this may not be true for ''Rush'' Blaze. She never says that anyone mistreated her because of her powers, only that she was alone because of them and having to guard the Sol Emeralds. During ''Rush''[='=]s ending, she reflects on what she's learned, and realizes that her duties and insistence on doing things alone caused her to shut others out. Furthermore, no one in ''Rush Adventure'', which takes place in her dimension, seems to have a problem with Blaze or her pyrokinesis, and Setter, a koala, is even honored to have her grace his home with her presence.
* AlternateDimension: Where she's from.
* {{Anti Hero}}ine: Starts out as an antisocial loner. She [[CharacterDevelopment evolves]] into more of a pure hero over the course of ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}}'' with Cream's influence.
* ApocalypseMaiden: [[spoiler:She possibly implied she's one in ''VideoGames/SonicGenerations'', as she states that [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 Crisis]] [[LethalLavaLand City]] was ''her'' fault. Whether it's due to her own power, Solaris's power she possesses, or releasing Iblis isn't clear.]]
* BadassAdorable: Espeically when she goes into her ShrinkingViolet mode.
* BadassBoast: Tends to let out a few in the Archie Comics, but the one she gives to Captain Metal after he [[spoiler:(seemingly)]] kills Amy, Cream, and Marine stands out as the most terrifying.
-->'''Blaze:''' Let me tell you of duty, Captain Metal. ''My'' duty is to protect the Sol Emeralds and this world. ''You'' hold the last emerald I seek. (''Captain Metal tries to get her to cooperate with him.'') Cooperate with a filthy pirate? Oh no. You'll pay for what you did to my friends. You'll ''pay'' for keeping this world in jeopardy by stealing that gem. You'll give me ''my emerald'' or I can ''pry'' it from your charred remains. Either way you will... '''BURN!'''
* BadassBookworm: She's quite knowledgeable on the geography and history of her world, and even knows how to read the language of an ancient civilization. A Sonic Channel wallpaper also shows reading to be a hobby of hers.
* BareYourMidriff: In ''VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames''.
* BarrierMaiden: She becomes Iblis's new [[SealedEvilInACan can.]] [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot Then the reset button got pushed...]]
* BattleCouple: Though it's up for interpretation whether there's anything romantic between the two, she and Sonic are rather close, and are battle partners at the end of ''Sonic Rush'', and throughout ''Sonic Rush Adventure''.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: This is why she's so protective of Cream at the end of ''Sonic Rush''.
* BeneathTheMask: She comes across as [[CloserToEarth level-headed]] and [[TheStoic reserved]], but is far more emotional and insecure than she lets on, though these traits do come to surface from time to time in [[VideoGame/SonicRushSeries some]] [[VideoGame/SonicColors games]].
* BerserkButton:
** Don't tell her ''why'' you'd put the world in danger, like for [[AGodAmI gaining ultimate power]], or to [[ForTheEvulz make it your plaything]]; you're just going to unleash her repressed [[HairTriggerTemper anger issues]].
** Teasing her about her small bust size is a sure-fire way to anger her.
** Harming Cream in any way is another way to invite her wrath.
** ''VideoGame/SonicRushAdventure'' shows that threatening to destroy her kingdom is another way to make her mad.
* BeYourself: One of the lessons she learns from Sonic in ''Rush''.
-->'''Sonic:''' Listen, don't bite off more than you can chew. And be yourself. You don't need to do everything on your own.
* BrutalHonesty: If the BrattyHalfPint is a nuisance, she'll tell it to her face.
* BullyingADragon: When she was younger, she had trouble controlling her powers, and other kids teased her for it.
* BurningWithAnger: Does this when she gets mad at times, mostly in the Archie Comics. Sometimes PlayedForLaughs, other times not.
* CastHerd: Despite the events of ''Sonic 06'' being erased, and being from a different dimension and time period than him, she is still commonly seen with Silver, for the sake of audience familiarity if nothing else. Although she's not always with Silver, as seen in the ''VideoGame/SonicRushSeries'' and in ''VideoGame/SonicRivals''.
* CatsAreMean: Subverted. While standoffish at first, at her core Blaze is a good-hearted person.
* CatsAreSnarkers: Quite the smart-aleck.
* CharacterDevelopment: For most of ''Rush'', she was very shy, and set on doing things alone. By ''Rush Adventure'', due to the influence of Sonic and his friends in the previous game, she's become much more sociable and willing to work with others.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: While she showed shades of it in the ''Rush'' games, in spin-offs such as the ''Riders'' and ''Olympics'' series, Blaze is shown to have become far more confident. Nearly all of her lines involve her bragging about how awesome she is, and she doesn't take losing well... Not unlike Sonic, one of the main influences behind her CharacterDevelopment.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Due to being from another dimension, she doesn't often appear in mainline games and is completely absent in ''VideoGame/SonicForces''.
* CoolBigSis: Has played this role towards Silver (despite being the same age), Cream, and it's implied she may have become one to Marine.
* CombatStilettos: And no, they do nothing to slow her down or mess with her agility.
* TheComicallySerious: Her poor social skills (and being [[SurroundedByIdiots the one serious-minded member of the team]]) lean her into this, DependingOnTheWriter at least.
* CompassionateCritic: It's implied that she only did this so Marine wouldn't follow them into danger and get herself hurt. The cutscene where it happens is even titled ''CruelToBeKind''.
* ContinuitySnarl: Not even ''Sega themselves'' can decide whether she is from the future (according to ''[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 Sonic '06]]'') or another dimension (according to the ''[[VideoGame/SonicRushSeries Sonic Rush]]'' [[VideoGame/SonicRushSeries series]]).
** [[WordOfGod Iizuka has, at Sonic Boom 2012,]] confirmed that Blaze is in fact from the Sol Dimension, and that ''[='=]06''[='=]s backstory for her should be ignored.
* CurbStompBattle: In ''Rush'', she takes Knuckles down without breaking a sweat.
* CursedWithAwesome: Before she and Sonic became friends, she hated her powers, as they brought her nothing but loneliness and misery.
* CrushBlush: Caliburn telling them to "save the hugs and kisses for later" after Sonic saved her from falling caused Percival to blush.
* CuteLittleFangs: In ''Sonic Generations''.
* DeadpanSnarker: Mostly in ''Sonic Rush''.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: They knew they weren't enemies, and only ended up fighting because Blaze was too stubborn to accept Sonic's help. Nonetheless, they become friends after duking it out.
* DefrostingIceQueen: Ironic, since she specializes in fire.
* {{Determinator}}: A bit too much for her own good at first. She's extremely dedicated to her duties, and will stop at nothing to protect the Sol Emeralds. Even Sonic tells her that he admires her fortitude.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Of the ''VideoGame/SonicRushSeries''. Her and Sonic are the only playable characters in the series. This is shown clearly on the [[http://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/l/349540-sonic-rush-adventure-nintendo-ds-manual.jpg cover]] of ''Sonic Rush Adventure'', Sonic is on the cover while Blaze...is not on it.
* DidYouGetANewHaircut: Upon being saved by Classic Sonic in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'', she points out that he's not as spiky as the Sonic she knows.
-->'''Blaze''': I wish I hadn't needed your help, Sonic, but thank you. By the way, you seem look less... spiky!
* DimensionalTraveler: In her [[http://sonic.sega.jp/SonicChannel/character/blaze.html Japanese profile on Sonic Channel]], it is mentioned that she can manipulate the Sol Emeralds to travel through time and space into Sonic's world and presumably return to her own world as long as she retains control over the Sol Emeralds.
* DontCallMeSir: Hates it when Guardon calls her Your Highness, and frequently corrects him.
** She's called "Miss Blaze" in [[VideoGame/MarioandSonicAtTheOlympicGames London Party]], suggesting she also doesn't like to be called "Princess".
* DudeMagnet: [[ShipTease Attracts the attention]] of Sonic, Silver, [[http://sonic.sega.jp/SonicChannel/comic/image/25th_161007_01.png and]] [[EvenTheGirlsWantHer Amy]].
* EvenTheGirlsWantHer: There's the time when Amy [[http://sonic.sega.jp/SonicChannel/comic/image/25th_161007_01.png fawns]] [[http://kawaii-muffins.tumblr.com/post/151514132228/ahh-so-much-dialogue-this-week over Blaze]].
* EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses: Despite a mistranslation calling her a queen in the ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' [[AllThereInTheManual manual]], both ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}}'' titles refer to her as a princess.
* {{Expy}}: While it could be a coincidence, she looks like a furry version of [[VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters Elisabeth Blanctorche]], including sharing some aspects of her personality.
** She also suffers from ACupAngst and is a very powerful [[PlayingWithFire fire user]], much like [[LightNovel/{{Slayers}} Lina Inverse.]]
** She's also a lot like Knuckles, being a shy yet aggressive emerald guardian who uses fire, and initially refuses Sonic's assistance to help her.
* FatalFlaw: Her aloofness made it difficult for her to cooperate with Sonic initially, and at one point halted progress after starting a fight with him. It also made her rather cold-natured towards Marine. CharacterDevelopment has toned this down to some degree.
* FateDrivesUsTogether: Seems to suggest this to Sonic at the end of ''Sonic Rush Adventure''.
-->'''Blaze:''' Do you think that maybe you were brought here for a reason?
-->'''Sonic:''' Brought here? By who?
-->'''Blaze:''' (smiling) By the Emeralds.
-->'''Sonic:''' (pauses, looking confused, then smiles) Heh, well, you never know.
* {{Flight}}: Is capable of flying through unknown means according to ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' as well as in her [[SuperMode Buring Blaze]] form.
* FlipFlopOfGod: Blaze's home goes back and forth between being an alternate dimension[[note]]The ''Sonic Rush'' series[[/note]] and the future[[note]]''Sonic 2006''[[/note]]. [[WordOfGod Iizuka has, at Sonic Boom 2012,]] confirmed that Blaze is in fact from the Sol Dimension, and that ''[='=]06''[='=]s backstory for her should be ignored. He still didn't explain why she appeared to be from the future in ''Sonic 2006'', though at this point it's likely that [[LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain they no longer care either]].
* {{Foil}}: To Sonic.
* ForgotAboutHerPowers: The [[PlayingWithFire pyrokinetic cat]] with the ability to take on a [[SuperMode Super form]] chooses to... cheer Sonic on rather than enter the battle and take on the Time Eater in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: ('''Melancholic'''); She's introverted to the point that even after growing fond of her friends, she generally dislikes having to rely on others. Looking past her harsh facade, she's a shy individual, such as how she often gets nervous when she's forced to interact with new people. When she's on duty as protector of the Sol Emeralds, she's very driven and focused on her task. She's also rather temperamental and because of her fiery temper, she can be reckless at times.
* FriendlessBackground: In the ''VideoGame/SonicRushSeries''; in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', however, she was Silver's childhood friend.
* FurryFemaleMane: Her mane, like Shadow's, extends from her lower neck down to her chest.
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Her fear of heights doesn't stop her from being incredibly acrobatic during gameplay.
* GoodIsNotNice: A mild example (cold, detached loner) at first. Gets better with CharacterDevelopment.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: A purple cat.
* GrumpyBear: In ''Sonic Rush''. [[DefrostingIceQueen Toned down later on]], but still shows up from time to time, DependingOnTheWriter.
* HeldGaze: Can be seen doing this with Sonic a couple of times, first in ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}}'' and then later as Percival in ''Sonic and the Black Knight''.
* HeroicLineage: The Jeweled Scepter, and the presumably the Sol Emeralds as well, have been guarded by Blaze's royal family for generations.
* HeroicSacrifice: In ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', she [[spoiler:becomes Iblis's vessel and seals herself in another dimension, possibly dying in the procces.]]
* HoldingHands: With Sonic at the end of ''VideoGame/SonicRush''. They don't let go of each other until their dimensions tear them apart.
* HotBlooded: In the ''Rush'' series, and the spin-offs.
* HurricaneKick: According to the boss defeat cutscenes in ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}}'', Blaze's "Axel Jump" works this way.
* ImageSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pRmZInUsKA Vela Nova]] is presented as her theme as of ''VideoGame/SonicAndTheBlackKnight'', although aside from the periodic "step by step," the song has no lyrics. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQ9YUyBkoYg Raisin' Me Up]], which is from her point of view towards Sonic, is a better example.
* IneffectualLoner: At first. She's still a bit of a loner after her CharacterDevelopment, but accepts help from others far easier.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: Rather aloof and a bit above it all, but [[ShrinkingViolet socially awkward and insecure]].
** She also becomes ''very'' defensive and snappy when Silver claims that he could have taken the robots out without her in ''VideoGame/SonicColors'', immediately claiming that she could have taken them out without him as well.
* InformedAbility: We see less of her guarding the Sol Emeralds and more of her hopping over to Sonic's dimension to have fun. Although her [[http://sonic.sega.jp/SonicChannel/character/blaze.html Japanese profile on Sonic Channel]] mentions that she needs the [[InterdimensionalTravelDevice Sol Emeralds]] to even travel to Sonic's dimension in the first place.
* InformedAttribute: WordOfGod has said that she wears her purple tailcoat to hide the fact that her body can control flames, which [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer she used to be]] [[BullyingADragon bullied for]], hinting that [[InformedDeformity her body may be scarred or otherwise affected]] by her powers; however, she will take it off in a pinch where [[PowerLimiter she has to use her powers]]. So far, this has not been seen in any game she has appeared in.
* InformedSpecies: She's a cat despite lacking whiskers unlike Big the Cat.
* InterdimensionalTravelDevice: The Sol Emeralds she carries allows her to travel between dimensions. ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' implies that Blaze visits Sonic's dimension often.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Cream and Marine.
* IronicFear: She's an agile feline who can jump high and pull amazing aerial stunts, and can even outright ''[[{{Flight}} fly]]'', but she's terrified of heights. [[LogicalWeakness Cats are usually afraid of heights in real life.]] On the flip side, despite being a ''fire cat'', she averts CatsHateWater and is shown in ''VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames'' to be a good swimmer.
* IWorkAlone: Initially in ''Sonic Rush''.
* JackOfAllStats: Like Amy, she is able to hit hard enough (thanks to her flames) and run substantially fast. And she also is classified as a Balanced Character in VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames.
* {{Kid Hero}}ine: She's only 14.
* LadyOfWar: Her fighting style is always poised and elegant, with graceful spins and twirls. Don't let her royal appearance fool you, she's a master of fiery arts.
* LargeHam: She dips into this from time to time. An example is when Eggman refuses to return the Sol Emeralds.
-->'''Blaze:''' Hmmm, it seems you like to play with fire. Let me light up your fingers then!
* LeaveMeAlone: At first until she learns to accept Sonic and the others' offer of friendship.
* LeeroyJenkins: Shown near the end of ''VideoGame/SonicRushAdventure''. When she gets angry, she has a tendency to blindly rush into battle. Fortunately, Sonic manages to calm her down.
* LethalChef: She's apparently [[http://i.imgur.com/ErQHj76.jpg not very good at cooking]].
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Silver in ''Sonic '06''. Due to ''Sonic '06'' being erased from canon, the two are no longer childhood friends, being from different worlds[[note]]Blaze being from the Sol Dimension, and Silver being from the future of Sonic's world[[/note]]. Though they do briefly interact in the DS version of ''Sonic Colors'', and the console versions of ''Sonic Generations''.
* LittleMissBadass: She ''is'' only 14, after all.
* LonerTurnedFriend: She was living by herself until Sonic met her.
* LoonyFriendsImproveYourPersonality: She TookALevelInKindness after making friends.
* MarriedToTheJob: She initially pushed people away in part because of her duties as Princess and Guardian of the Sol Emeralds; until she learned that carrying the world solely on her own shoulders was putting the world at more risk than allowing others to help.
%%* ModestRoyalty
%%* MulticoloredHair
* NoSocialSkills: In ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}}'', the other characters' overt friendliness clearly confused her, and she is known to be direct and blunt in her approach. She has since improved, though she is still somewhat brusque.
* NotSoDifferent: At times, she can be just as cocky as Sonic, if not more so.
* NotSoSimilar: Blaze is often similar to Knuckles due to both being both guardians of powerful artifacts (Knuckles with the Master Emerald and Blaze with the Sol Emeralds) and both have served as {{Foil}}s to Sonic where they [[FireForgedFriends started off as opponents before becoming friends of his]]. A few differences is that Knuckles fought Sonic due to Eggman's manipulations while Blaze fought Sonic due to her stubbornness in accepting his help. Also, both Blaze and Knuckles started off as anti-social loners; the only difference being that Blaze's development from loner to friend was more explicit while Knuckles' development was rather subtle. As for temperaments, while both characters are serious, Knuckles is rather hot-tempered while Blaze is more calm, but can get riled up on occasions.
* NotQuiteFlight: Can hover by igniting flames under her feet.
* OnlySaneMan: Although she was harsh about it, Blaze was the only one seriously worried about getting the Sol Emeralds and getting back to her world, because bad things could have happened if she didn't return on time.
* OppositesAttract: She and Sonic are different as night and day, but ultimately, their differences only strengthen their friendship. Quite possibly lampshaded in the ''Rush'' series, where it's said the Chaos and Sol Emeralds are like magnets; they can be attracted to each other, or repel each other. Sonic and Blaze's personalities can be described the same way, and considering their connections to the emeralds, this parallel seems to be intentional.
* OutOfFocus: Her last major appearance was in ''VideoGame/SonicRushAdventure'' back in 2007. Since then, she's been relegated to spin-off titles and minor cameo appearances.
* ParentalAbandonment: In ''Sonic Rush'', she states that she was always alone due to her powers and having to guard the Sol Emeralds. But in ''Sonic Rush Adventure'', we learn that she ''does'' have a living family.
* PerpetualFrowner: Before and during ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}}''; she was honestly surprised when Cream pointed out that she was smiling.
** In the ''Mario and Sonic'' series, she is portrayed as much more jovial and enthusiastic, frequently displaying a large wide open smile, suggesting she maybe has more a SeriousBusiness treatment of her duties rather than being negative in personality.
* PersonalityPowers: Played with. Usually, unlike most [[PlayingWithFire fire-wielders]], she plays the BlueOni to her more reckless and emotional teammates; however, when [[RedOni things get tense]]...
* PersonOfMassDestruction: [[spoiler:In ''VideoGames/SonicGenerations'', she states that [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 Crisis]] [[LethalLavaLand City]] was ''her'' fault. Just how exactly she caused it isn't specified.]]
* PlayingWithFire: Obviously; her name is ''[[MeaningfulName Blaze]]'' the Cat, after all. Oddly enough, she only seems to throw fireballs in her super form. In her normal form, she fights like Sonic, but with fire.
* PowerOfFriendship: Had to [[AnAesop learn about this]] before she could utilize the power of the Sol Emeralds.
* PungeonMaster: Not as frequent as most examples of the trope, but she tends to let out a few fire-based puns.
* PurpleIsPowerful: She's a purple and powerful cat.
* RedOniBlueOni: Blaze is usually calm and reserved, making her the Blue to Sonic's Red. However, when things get tense, they swap.
* RippleEffectProofMemory: Blaze recalls the events of ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' despite said events having been [[RetGone erased from time]].
--> '''Blaze:''' "I never thought I'd find myself in Crisis City again. This world is full of surprises."
* TheRival: Blaze was a bit of a rival to Sonic during the first half of ''[[VideoGame/SonicRushSeries Sonic Rush]]''.

* SuperStrength: She's classified as a Power character in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners''.
%%* {{Tomboy}}

* WhenSheSmiles: An InUniverse reaction. When Blaze smiles in "Sonic Rush," Cream acts very surprised and asks Blaze if she's really smiling.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: As shown in both ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}}'' titles, she has a case of acrophobia.
** Which is ''very odd'' considering what she has to do in levels.
** [[LogicalWeakness It actually makes sense, when you consider that cats are usually afraid of heights in real life.]]
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: She is very mature and intelligent for her age. However, she's also younger and less experienced than Sonic, and loses her cool more easily than he does.
* WomenAreWiser: Albeit DependingOnTheWriter. In ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' and ''VideoGame/SonicAndTheBlackKnight'', she is much more composed and "normal" acting than her other team members. In titles such as the ''VideoGame/SonicRushSeries'', however, she is a [[LargeHam hammy]] GrumpyBear.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Despite what their personalities would lead you to believe, Blaze is actually a year younger than Sonic. To be exact, Sonic is 15, and she's 14, the same age as Silver.

[[folder:Silver the Hedgehog]]

-->''"I will protect the future!"''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' ([[CanonDiscontinuity non-canon]] [[SchrodingersCanon possibly]])
->'''Canon Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicRivals''

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/DaisukeOno (Japanese), PeteCapella (English, 2006-2010), Creator/QuintonFlynn (English, 2010-present)

A telekinetic hedgehog from the future. Silver's timeline had been overrun by the "Flames of Disaster", also known as Iblis, one half of the time god Solaris. He and his best friend Blaze spent their days defending their home from Iblis, while trying to find a way to destroy it for good. One day, he is approached by Mephiles the Dark, the other half to Solaris and Iblis' opposite. Mephiles tells Silver that the only way to save his home is to return to the past and kill the one responsible for Iblis' release, our hero Sonic the Hedgehog. Silver jumps at the chance and he and Blaze go on a hunt for Sonic. Unsurprisingly, Mephiles was manipulating Silver to his own ends and after a brief fight with Shadow, he returns to the present to help Sonic rescue Princess Elise from Eggman. Later on, Sonic & Silver go their separate ways and Silver returns to the future with knowledge of how to stop Iblis for good, sealing it away. When Silver is unable to seal Iblis within himself, Blaze opts to take his place and seemingly erases herself from existence telling Silver good luck. After Solaris' defeat, and the reset of time, Silver now comes from a new restored future where Blaze does not exist. He travels back in time to capture Eggman Nega and bring him back to the future, and later, to prevent Eggman Nega from summoning a fire demon named Ifrit, who has destroyed the world in the future.

Silver is idealistic, headstrong, and more than a bit naive. His one true desire is a place where people can be happy and free from harm, but he's pretty rash and quick to make judgments without all of the details. Like Knuckles, he's quick to believe whatever people tell him to achieve his goals. Silver is still a kindhearted person though and always has everyone's best interests at heart.

* AdorablyPrecociousChild: He's a little older than usual for this trope, but he is portrayed as a young boy who carries the world on his shoulders.
* AntiHero: Sometimes, when he's really trying to focus on saving the world, he can get really impatient, and tends to lose all his respect for other people.
* AntiVillain: At first, due to being manipulated by Mephiles to kill Sonic.
* {{Adorkable}}: Naive, insecure, and a total sweetie.
* AnimeHair: His hair is pointed upwards.
* BadassAdorable: He may look like Sonic, but his psychic powers prove he's more difficult than him.
* CanonDiscontinuity: His debut in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'', due to the events of that game being erased. His first encounter with Sonic and friends was in ''VideoGame/SonicRivals''. [[SchrodingersCanon Not that it explains]] Crisis City returning in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' with Blaze stating that she remembers it or [[TemporalParadox Silver being around]] when logically [[RetGone he should have been erased from time]]. ''VideoGame/SonicForces'' has him from a ''different'' future caused by Eggman's victory.
* CaptainObvious:
-->'''Silver:''' I can't deflect lasers with my telekinesis.
* CarpetOfVirility: He has a tuft of fur much like Shadow's, but subverted in that he is less competent and mature than some other characters.
* CastHerd:
** Even after the events of ''Sonic 06'' were erased, and being from a different dimension and time period than her, he's still seen with Blaze in the ''Olympics'' series, ''Colors DS'', and ''Generations'', for the sake of audience familiarity if nothing else. However, he's not always with Blaze, as seen in the ''VideoGame/SonicRushSeries'' and in ''VideoGame/SonicRivals''.
** When Blaze isn't present, he tends to be sorted with the Chaotix - He teams up with Espio in ''VideoGame/SonicRivals2'', and is usually with them at the base in ''VideoGame/SonicForces''
* CatchAndReturn: His speciality.
* ConjoinedEyes: Just like with Sonic and Shadow.
* {{Determinator}}: Much like Sonic, nothing will keep Silver down for too long.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: In ''Sonic '06'', he fights against one half of the main villain (Iblis), whereas Shadow fights the other half (Mephiles).
* {{Expy}}: His role and characterization are based primarily on [[Anime/DragonBallZ Future Trunks]]; his entry in the game's script even ends with "basically, think Trunks from ''Dragon Ball Z''.
%%* EyesOfGold
* FireForgedFriends: With Sonic in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' after learning that Mephiles deceived him into thinking he was the Iblis Trigger. However, as the events of the game were [[{{Retcon}} erased]], Silver TookALevelInJerkass and he and Sonic clashed again in the ''Sonic Rivals'' series. It wasn't until ''Sonic Colors DS'' that the two got along again.
* {{Flight}}: By turning his telekinesis on himself, Silver can fly through the air.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: In ''Forces'', he encounters Infinite in Mystic Jungle and attempts to fight him, but never once thinks to just immobilize him with his telekinesis. This is especially jarring when [[spoiler:in the final battle with Eggman's army, he uses his telekinesis to immobilize three of Infinite's virtual reality constructs for Team Chaotix to hit them.]]
* ForGreatJustice: Sometimes he doesn't know what to do due to these two motives clashing; he wants people to be happy and to bring peace to his world, but he also wants to bring justice upon those who harm the future. Sometimes he leans more towards one side than the other.
* {{Friendly Rival|ry}}: Seems to take this role in later titles, particularly in his boss battle in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''. He is giving Sonic all he's got, and they both seem to be enjoying it.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: ('''Supine'''); He's an idealistic, headstrong, and naive individual. His greatest desire is a place where people can be happy and free from harm. He has good intentions but can be very brash, awkward and quick to make judgments without all of the details. Like Knuckles, he's quick to believe whatever people tell him, so long as he ends up achieving his goals. He comes across as inexperienced and clearly needs a level-headed companion to assist and guide him or else he ends up lost and confused. Despite his fierce temper and brash behavior, he's a kind-hearted person who always has everyone's best interests at heart.
* FutureBadass: Subverted; he's younger and less experienced than Sonic.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Because of his strong sense of justice, he holds this demeanor towards the evils that would harm his future. Can sometimes double with GoodIsNotNice because this can lead him into conflict with the other characters whom he feels are preventing him from saving it, which may have been the case of his attitude in the ''Sonic Rivals'' series.
%%* HumansArePsychicInTheFuture
* HeelFaceTurn: Intially starts out as a pawn of Mephiles, but after Shadow helps him to see that he's being used, he fights against Mephiles along with the others.
* ImageSong: "[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 Dreams of an Absolution]]".
* InformedFlaw: He's been stated to be [[HatesBeingAlone insecure when he's alone]], but he's never really seemed to be for more than a moment.
-->'''Silver:''' ''(having just arrived in the present, separated from Blaze)'' Blaze? Blaze! ''*looks around for a few moments*'' Now I must fight for the future!
* InspectorJavert: Played straight. He caused a ''lot'' of problems for Sonic in ''Sonic 06''. Said problems included nearly ''killing'' him twice in a row, allowing Eggman to kidnap Elise ''yet again''. Ironically, Eggman kidnapping Elise those times actually might have turned out better in the short run, given what happened when Mephiles killed Sonic himself in front of Elise.
* InSpiteOfANail: While his original future was averted, he still exists in its replacements and they never seem to be peaceful. So he keeps coming back to fix things.
* InterfaceScrew: His special ability in ''Sonic Rivals'' has him using his powers to scramble the opponent's controls.
* KidFromTheFuture: He's the exact same age as Sonic in his timeline.
* KidHero: He's 14 years old, one year younger than Sonic, and the same age as Blaze.
* KnightTemplar: Although (mostly) kept in check by PetTheDog moments.
* LargeHam: "IT'S NO UUUSE!!!"
** It should be noted that Silver's first English actor, Pete Capella, has gone on record during an interview stating that [[NoIndoorVoice it's difficult to do Silver's voice quietly.]]
* LightIsGood: His dominant color is silver and is a hero at heart.
* LightIsNotGood: Falls under this during his KnightTemplar moments.
* MindOverMatter: His main superpower is telekinesis.
* MundaneObjectAmazement
-->'''Silver:''' This looks so beautiful.\\
'''Amy:''' What? You mean this [[ShiftingSandLand desert]]?\\
'''Silver:''' Everything is so great here, isn't it? The sky is gorgeous, and everyone's happy...
* NiceGuy: He can be one when he isn't stressing out about some future crisis.
* OddFriendship: He's seen high-fiving [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Yoshi]] at the [[VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames Winter games]].
* PerpetualFrowner: It's very rare to see Silver smile, although this may have to do with him stressing over a crisis harming his future. However, there are some instances where he does smile (e.g., in ''Generations'' where he is excited at fighting Sonic again, as shown in the BloodKnight example above).
* PhraseCatcher: In the Archie comics, the phrase "[[MemeticMutation It's no use]]" gets thrown around a ''lot'' whenever Silver is there to hear it. Much to his annoyance.
-->'''Silver:''' "It's no use"... I'm getting ''really'' tired of people saying that.
* PsychicPowers: Aside from his telekinesis, he can perform telepathy, but it's very limited and can only disorient foes at the most.
* TheRival: To an extent, he started as one to Sonic due to Mephiles' manipulation (and briefly with Shadow). Then after ''Sonic 2006'' was retconned, they started as rivals again (he also had some bouts with Shadow and Knuckles). After the ''Rivals'' series, they become friendly towards each other.
* RivalsTeamUp: Does this with Shadow and then Sonic in ''Sonic 2006'' after finding out the truth about Iblis.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong:
** In his debut, he's trying to stop the BadFuture caused by Iblis from happening. He doesn't really succeed [[spoiler:as the end result is Solaris being recreated and nearly destroying reality,]] and it's Sonic who has to pull this trope to fix it.
** In ''Forces'' the prequel comic has him trying to stop a ''different'' BadFuture from happening involving Eggman's victory bringing the world to ruin. [[spoiler:He actually ''succeeds'' this time without even realizing it, as he knocks the Prototype Phantom Ruby off Infinite in their fight, which is instrumental to defeating Eggman in the end.]]
%%* ShonenHair
* SkilledButNaive: A mix of both. Due to his young age, his skill in actual hand-to-hand combat is lacking and he can easily be manipulated, but his PsychicPowers make both of these relatively moot points.
* SpiritedCompetitor: His reaction towards getting challenged to a rematch in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'' shows elements of this.
-->'''Silver:''' This should be fun! Let's go, Sonic!
* SuperMode: Super Silver.
* SuperSpeed: Unlike Sonic and Shadow, Silver did not possess this ability in his debut, at least on foot. He could fly fast in cutscenes, but on foot and in-game, he was rather slow. In later appearances, his running speed has been greatly increased, being comparable to Sonic and Shadow's.
* TeleportSpam: His Teleport Dash.
* TimeTravel: Any plot where he appears will involve this.
* TimeyWimeyBall: Simply put, the BadFuture he's from no longer exists, but somehow he does. ''Forces'' remedies this by having him from a ''different'' BadFuture that is ''also'' undone, and yet he still exists.
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler:His powers are ''much'' stronger in ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations'', to the point where he can ''compress tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of pounds of cars and debris into a massive ball that chases Sonic.'']]
* TookALevelInJerkass: In the ''Sonic Rivals'' games, he acts much ruder to everyone than in [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 his debut]]. He seems to have gotten better in his cameo in ''[[VideoGame/SonicColors Sonic Colors DS]]''.
* UnwittingPawn: Mephiles tricks Silver by convincing him that Sonic is the Iblis Trigger.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Severely downplayed. He has no qualms against killing Sonic to save his future, [[WhatTheHellHero but getting an earful from Amy]] made him question if it's truly right to kill someone for his own ends.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Was originally depicted as a {{green eye|s}}d mink named Venice. In fact, Silver was said to have gone through fifty concept designs before settling on his final look.

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/MaayaSakamoto (Japanese), Creator/LaceyChabert (English), Creator/VeronicaTaylor ([[TheOtherMarty early voice clips]]).

The Princess of Soleanna who appeared as Sonic's ''human'' love interest in ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006''. Elise carries the flames of Iblis inside her, and as a result was trained to never cry lest her tears unleash the flames and destroy the world.

* BarrierMaiden: When Sonic is carrying her, she can project barriers to protect him from hazards.
* TheCameo: Appears as a card in ''Sonic Rivals'' and in the credits of ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''.
* DamselInDistress: She's kidnapped 5 times in Sonic's story, usually almost immediately after she's rescued.
* DrivenToSuicide: After getting kidnapped for the third time, Elise decides she'd rather die than be Eggman's prisoner again and leaps off his ship.
* EmotionlessGirl: Though much less colder to everyone than the standard, she had to completely suppress her emotions so that she wouldn't cry and unleash Iblis on the world. Sonic finally gets her to open up, [[spoiler:[[NiceJobBreakingItHero which ultimately turns out to be a bad thing]] when Mephiles takes advantage of their friendship and murders Sonic]].
* EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses: Despite her father being a duke and her mother a duchess, Elise herself is a princess.
* HostageMacGuffin: She's the vessel for the Flames of Disaster, Iblis.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: All she wants is a life away from Iblis and Mephiles. When Sonic takes her to the open plain and she sees beautiful flowers, she's very overjoyed.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaUGQ673VbU My Destiny]]".
* InterspeciesRomance: She develops a crush on Sonic, and the two share awkward romantic moments. While Sonic's own attitude is unstated in the game itself and ultimately left up to the player to decide, WordOfGod states he does have a thing for her as well.
* LivingMacGuffin: Her powers and the flames inside of her are what Eggman wants, so she's constantly getting kidnapped as a result.
* NeutralFemale: Whenever Silver or Sonic are battling in a cutscene she just stands around and clutches at her heart, she gets kidnapped frequently, and when she does do something proactive it tends to be negated.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Amy finds her in the middle of an escape from Eggman's base, but how she got out (or how they escape afterward) is never seen.
* PrincessClassic: Elise is kind, wise, and devoted to her people and country, even at her own expense.
* SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan: [[spoiler:She was used as the host to seal away Iblis, and it is heavily implied that several of her powers stemmed from Iblis being sealed within her. Other than that, however, Iblis doesn't seem to take any control over her.]]
* StepfordSmiler: Her father told her to not cry about anything. Turns out [[SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan there's a very good reason why she shouldn't cry]].
* TragicKeepsake: Her blue Chaos Emerald was given to her by a time-traveling Silver to ease the pain of her father's death.
* TrueLovesKiss: Used in conjunction with the Chaos Emeralds to revive Sonic.

The "Genie of the Ring", who enlists Sonic for aid in stopping the Erazor Djinn.

* BackFromTheDead: She's killed by the Erazor Djinn prior to the FinalBoss, but resurrected afterwards by Sonic's first wish on Erazor's lamp.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: This was likely the reason why Shahra [[spoiler:sacrificed herself for Sonic's sake and did not jump to Erazor's defense whilst he was dooming him to his eternal prison]]. Sonic was probably the first master who treated her with genuine kindness and concern, who didn't disrespect her or treat her like magical property who can fulfill his wildest dreams.
* BenevolentGenie: As opposed to Erazor Djinn.
* TheBusCameBack: She makes a return in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners'' as an equippable buddy.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: She dies in Sonic's arms, tearfully begging for his forgiveness. She gets better.
* ExpositionFairy: Her main role during gameplay.
* FogFeet: Shahra appears like this for most of the opening cutscene.
* HeroicSacrifice: She takes the bullet for Sonic when Erazor is prepared to sacrifice him.
* ItsAllMyFault: She blames herself for Sonic's [[TheWorseningCurseMark condition throughout the game]], because Sonic took the flaming arrow that Erazor meant for her.
* LiteralGenie: When Sonic asks for "a few" handkerchiefs, she ends up summoning enough to literally bury him.
* OurGeniesAreDifferent: She's bound to a ring rather than a magic lamp, and is limited to simple wishes by her own admission.
* SympathyForTheDevil: After Sonic traps Erazor in his lamp for all eternity, Shahra cries for him.
* TakingTheBullet: She jumps in the way of Erazor's sword strike to save Sonic.

* CheerfulChild: Very much so.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass [[BadassAdorable Adorable]]: She managed to [[spoiler:get the Jewelled Sceptre back whilst being held hostage and seems to have some kind of power that she uses towards the end of the game]].
** And in the Archie Comics. Despite initialy proving useless in helping Shadow and Blaze against Metal Sonic, she manages to ''finish him off with a well-aimed shot from her ship's cannons!'' However, in doing so, [[NiceJobBreakingItHero she destroyed the dimensional buffer and Shadow's only way home]], but hey, the kid gets an A for effort at least.
* DidNotDoTheBloodyResearch: The English-language version of the game gives her an Australian dialect. At one point she uses the term "bugger", meaning that the UK version of the game had to be awarded a 12+ age rating, despite otherwise being a totally innocuous platformer suitable for all ages. Oops.
* DistaffCounterpart: To Tails. Tails was even a raccoon at one point in design.
** And to a degree, she's one to Sonic. Both are free-spirited adventure lovers, both have a bit of an ego to them, and both have a tendency to be [[LeeroyJenkins Leeroy Jenkinses]].
* FragileFlower: She's a CheerfulChild by default, but she can easily be driven to tears.
* GenkiGirl: And how!
* GirlishPigtails: Highlighting her childish personality.
** And they're shaped like ''boomerangs''.
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: In the Japanese version, she speaks in the KansaiDialect.
%%* ImpossiblyLowNeckline
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: It's implied a few times in ''[[VideoGame/SonicRushSeries Sonic Rush Adventure]]'' that the LeeroyJenkins act is mask to hide her insecurites and show everyone she can take care of herself. By the end of the game, she finally acknowledges her flaws and vows to grow up.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With Blaze.
* InterspeciesAdoption: She was raised by koalas and picked up her Australian accent from them.
* KiAttacks: [[spoiler:No one's really sure which due to the DS's limited graphics, but she has some kind of power that she uses to save Blaze and Sonic near the end of ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}} Adventure''.]]
* KidHero: She's seven years old, one year younger than Tails.
* JustAKid: Marine herself is aware of this, [[LampshadeHanging noting that]] nobody would believe that she [[spoiler:retrieved the Jewelled Sceptre]] because she's a kid.
%%* KidAppealCharacter
* LeaderWannabe: She considers herself the leader in ''Sonic Rush Adventure'', but no one else does.
* LeeroyJenkins: Though she means well, she constantly rushes off to adventure and has to be rescued multiple times. Though at some points in the game, this actually helps the gang as they manage to find Whisker's hideout when she destroyed the statue and [[spoiler:she manages to get the Jeweled Sceptre from him when he captured her]].
* TheLoad: Seen as this through most of ''[[VideoGame/SonicRushSeries Sonic Rush Adventure]]''.
%%* MotorMouth: ''Yes.''
%%* MouthyKid
%%* MulticoloredHair
* NeatFreak: According to her Sonic Channel profile.
* NiceGirl: Her annoying traits can overshadow this part, but she really is this when you get to know her.
* OutOfFocus: Since her sole appearance in ''VideoGame/{{Sonic Rush|Series}} Adventure'', she has only been referenced by other characters.
* ParentalAbandonment: Her parents are nowhere in sight. The Coconut Crew appear to be the closest she has to a ParentalSubstitute.

* SmallNameBigEgo: Thinks she's the "captain", and doesn't listen to anyone else. [[CharacterDevelopment She vows to grow up a bit]] in the end.

-->''"Want some chocolate?"''

->'''Debut''': ''VideoGame/SonicUnleashed''

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/RyokoShiraishi (Japanese), Tony Salerno (English)

Sonic's little flying sidekick from ''VideoGame/SonicUnleashed''. Also known as [[spoiler:Light Gaia]].

* AmbiguousGender: According to the [[ShesAManInJapan Japanese]] [[AllThereInTheManual Sonic Channel]], Chip's sex is listed as "[[MyNameIsQuestionMarks ???]]" (along with [[CartoonCreature species]] and [[VagueAge age]]).
* BadassAdorable: This really kicks in during the climax.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: As if it needed to be said, Chip's CrowningMomentOfAwesome comes when he [[spoiler:winds up and delivers a [[MegatonPunch friggin' haymaker of justice]] to [[EldritchAbomination Dark Gaia's]] face with the [[HumongousMecha Temple Guardian]]]].
** [[spoiler:Not to mention slugging the ever-living crap out of Dark Gaia and then holding it down so Sonic could go for the CoupDeGrace.]]
* BigEater: Loves chocolate and other foods from the vendors.
* TheBusCameBack: He makes a return in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners'' as an equippable buddy.
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:The final step of his HeroicSacrifice.]]
* TheCameo: He appears as a Mii Costume in ''London 2012''.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: If it's not sweet, don't expect him to be overly fond of it. He especially hates spicy food.
* EasyAmnesia: At the beginning of the game, he dosen't remember who he is. Later on, he realizes his true purpose, but not before Dark Gaia wakes up.
* ExpositionFairy: During gameplay. Though it makes you wonder how he knows all that stuff after losing his memory [[spoiler:and having been asleep in the centre of the planet for millions of years]].
%%* EyesOfGold
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: During some cutscenes, while Sonic is talking to someone, Chip is doing something in the background, like swimming in the air, and only contributes to conversations when food comes up.
* {{Hammerspace}}: Apparently how he holds on to all his bars of chocolate.
* ImageSong: "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXi0GpOSArw Dear My Friend]]".
* {{Keet}}: Must be because of all that sugar he eats.
* LovableCoward: In the ''Night of the Werehog'' short.
* NatureSpirit: [[spoiler:His purpose is to rebuild the planet after Dark Gaia shatters it.]]
* PalsWithJesus: His friendship with Sonic is revealed to be this.
%%* RememberTheNewGuy
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: He explains he's ''[[spoiler:[[TimeAbyss older than Earth]]]]''!
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: He's an adorable little pup who flies around Sonic.
* SmallAnnoyingCreature: In the [=Wii/PS2=] versions. He is much less so in the [=PS3/360=] versions, since he only speaks up during gameplay if you walk into an assist icon, thus reducing the AnnoyingVideoGameHelper quotient. His cutscene antics are actually pretty funny most of the time.
* SweetTooth: Feeding him anything sweet will improve his friendship with Sonic.
* SymbolSwearing: His reaction to eating the [[MasochistsMeal Canned Horror]].
* ThirdPersonPerson: In the Japanese version.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Chocolate, and Sundae Supreme.
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler:His necklace, which Sonic places on his bracelet in memory of Chip.]]
* VocalDissonance: English vocals only; his voice is much deeper than what you'd expect from a floating chihuahua fairy thing.

->'''Debut''': ''[[VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries Sonic and the Black Knight]]''

!!!!!!Voiced by Creator/HiroakiHirata (Japanese), Casey Robertson (English)

A sentient talking weapon and legendary sacred sword that becomes Sonic's partner to stop King Arthur. Though their relationship came off to a rocky start, Caliburn provided Sonic with the guidance and knowledge needed to be a true knight.

* AbsurdlySharpBlade: Can cut through even rock and dragon scale, though with some effort. [[spoiler:His cutting power improves once he turns into [[SuperMode Excalibur]], where he can slice through Dark Queen Merlina's magical armor created with the power of her immortality-granting scabbard]].
-->'''Caliburn''': There's ''nothing'' [[spoiler:Excalibur]] can't cut through.
* {{BFS}}: He's as big as Sonic is tall. [[spoiler:Moreso when he becomes the Excalibur.]]
* TheBusCameBack: He makes a return in ''VideoGame/SonicRunners'' as an equippable buddy.
* TheCameo: He appears in ''[[VideoGame/MonsterHunter Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate]]'' as a weapon for the Sonic costume that can be worn by the player's Palico.
* DeadpanSnarker: Towards Sonic due to their clashing personalities.
* ExcaliburInTheStone: Subverted: It seems that the two are separate swords at first, but then it's revealed that [[spoiler:Caliburn (which Sonic has been carrying around the entire game) is actually the true Excalibur, or rather Excalibur's base form without the other sacred swords]].
* ExpositionFairy: Takes over this role from Merlina, as he possesses a rather intensive knowledge of Camelot that he gives to Sonic.
* FireForgedFriends: He and Sonic do ''not'' get along at first, but over their adventure together Caliburn grows to trust and respect Sonic greatly, being the one to name him the "Knight of the Wind" [[spoiler:and proudly calls him King Arthur]].
* FlyingWeapon: He's capable of levitation, which he often does to keep up with Sonic when he's not being used.
* SternTeacher: Shown to slightly have this sort of personality, usually calling Sonic a fool when he does something that Caliburn disapproves of or disagrees with.
* SuperMode: [[spoiler:Excalibur, after absorbing the power of the other Sacred Swords of the Knights of the Round Table. Notably, when Sonic becomes Excalibur-Sonic, he doesn't actually transform himself but simply gains golden armor heavily implied to be created from Excalibur's power]].
* TalkingWeapon: And ''does'' it. Caliburn is amazingly egotistical.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Him and Sonic snark at each other despite being on the same side.
* WreckedWeapon: During the final battle, [[spoiler:Merlina shatters his blade when Sonic uses him to defend against her attacks. His face noticeably goes blank when Sonic looks at him, heavily implying that either the blow knocked him out cold or it might have outright ''killed'' him. He recovers from the potentially fatal injury when he goes [[SuperMode Excalibur]]]].

[[folder:Custom Hero/Avatar]]
[[caption-width-right:180:{{Original character}}, [[MemeticMutation do not steal]].]]

->'''Debut:''' ''VideoGame/SonicForces''

A member of the resistance who joins forces with Sonic to overthrow the Eggman Empire.

* ArchEnemy: Infinite is one to them. [[spoiler:The Avatar's fellow soldiers were killed by Infinite, and since then, they have developed a fear of him, something Infinite uses to torment them. [[CharacterDevelopment However, some encouragement from Sonic helps the Avatar conquer their fear of him]] and [[TookALevelInBadass help Sonic take him down for good]].]]
* BadassAdorable: Thanks to some of the customization options and the fact that your character's abilities aren't appearance-dependant, it is entirely possible to make your avatar look absolutely adorable without losing any ass-kicking potential.
* BadassArmfold: One of your character's selectable victory poses is this.
* BadassBaritone: Can be invoked, as one of the customizable options allows you to give your character a deep voice.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Your character can be made to wear several stylish suits, including an outfit based on Joker's from ''VideoGame/Persona5''. However, this version of it comes without the original's signature BadassLongcoat.
* BadassNormal: They lack Sonic's SuperSpeed boost without assistance from Sonic himself and don't have any real powers of their own (minus minor buffs each species comes with), and have to rely on their grappling hook and various weapons to fight equally. They still manage to pull their weight and save the day.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** In Park Avenue, their objective is to help the civilians evacuate the city while Sonic and Silver are still recovering from their recent bout with Infinite.
** [[spoiler: When the Phantom Ruby's power has reached its peak and Eggman's final solution is unveiled, Infinite has called down the sun from the sky to incinerate the Resistance once and for all. Nothing anybody can do can hope to stop this...save for the Avatar, Phantom Ruby Prototype in hand.]]
** [[spoiler:During Sonic's final battle with Infinite, the Phantom Ruby's energy is recharged, but the Avatar steps in to help Sonic take Infinite down for good.]]
* BodyPaint: Some of their outfits look like the trope. And yes, [[VideoGamePerversityPotential you can make a female avatar wear it (and she doesn't even seem to wear anything underneath)]].
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:Once Eggman and Infinite are defeated, the Avatar decides to take off to help others elsewhere.]]
* CharacterCustomization: You can choose several factors about your character, such as gender and species.
* CharacterDevelopment: Over the course of the game, the Avatar goes from a NervousWreck with a crippling fear of Infinite to a capable soldier in their own right.
* ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler:During his fight with Silver, Infinite drops one of the Phantom Ruby prototypes he was supposed to destroy. The Avatar would later find that same prototype, allowing them to survive Infinite's illusion during their fight with him, and allowing them to ultimately foil Eggman's plan to destroy the Resistance with a virtual sun.]]
* CombatPragmatist: Unlike Sonic and co. (except Shadow [[VideoGame/ShadowTheHedgehog that one time]], and Sonic [[VideoGame/SonicStorybookSeries that other time]]), the Custom Hero is willing to use any weapons and gadgets they can get their hands on to fight.
* CompetitiveBalance: Each species for the Avatar has an ability unique to that species: hedgehogs have more time to recollect lost rings, cats can keep a ring after taking damage, birds can jump twice as high as the others, bears have a homing ability to blow away enemies, etc.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: Of ''Sonic Forces'', being one of the {{Player Character}}s, being essential to turning the tide against Eggman, and having the most CharacterDevelopment among the entire cast. Likewise, Classic Sonic is demoted to {{Tritagonist}}.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: At the beginning of the game, some of the cast openly doubt their skills due to their anxiety issues, but as the game progresses and they perform more acts of heroism, they end up earning the respect of everyone which is cemented at the climax of the game when [[spoiler:they foil Eggman's plan to destroy the Resistance with a virtual sun.]]
* GrapplingHookPistol: No matter the customization options, the Custom Character always has a grappling hook attached to a bracelet on their left wrist. It can be used to grapple on to certain points for alternative paths, in lieu of a homing attack or to trip up massive bosses ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'' style.
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: As with many Sonic characters, you have the option to let your Avatar go around naked except for some shoes and gloves, but you can also [[FullyDressedCartoonAnimal avert this]].
* TheHerosJourney: They go from being a bystander who happened to survive Infinite's attack on their hometown, to being picked up by Knuckles and joining the Resistance -- eventually standing head-and-shoulders besides Sonic himself to save the world.
* HeroicMime: Appears in cutscenes, but only "speaks" in grunts.
* HoldingHands: The teamup mechanics in the Duo Tag Team Stages in ''Sonic Forces'' involves Sonic and the Avatar holding on to each other.
* MyGreatestFailure: It's implied that they join the Resistance [[spoiler:partially to make up for running from Infinite when Eggman's first attack happened.]]
* NervousWreck: They are shown to suffer from anxiety and Infinite uses that to torment them [[spoiler:until they are able to control it and stand up to Infinite.]]
* NobleWolf: The Avatar designed to promote the game is a red wolf.
* NotAfraidOfYouAnymore: When they face Infinite again after the Capital City stage, they're visibly terrified of him, thanks to Infinite personally slaughtering their squad and [[CruelMercy letting them live just to torture them]]. However, after recalling words of encouragement from Sonic, the Avatar manages to overcome their fear and stand up to him.
* NoNameGiven: Their stages are simply called "Avatar Stage". The other characters only refer to them in vague terms, such as Knuckles calling them "the rookie".
* OCStandIn: A deliberate example, being a customizable character for the player to project themselves onto.
* RightManInTheWrongPlace: According to WordOfGod, they were just an ordinary person before all this happened and more or less got dragged into this mess. They end up being an integral part of saving the world.
* SoleSurvivor: Infinite killed their friends, but let them live to [[CruelMercy make them suffer.]]
* SpecsOfAwesome: Customization options include a variety of eyewear, such as the NerdGlasses the template Avatar wears.
* SuperSpeed: Quick enough to keep up with other characters such as [[FastestThingAlive Sonic]].
* SupportingProtagonist: WordOfGod states that they play a pivotal role in the game, though Sonic is still TheHero.
* VirtualPaperDoll: '''Custom''' Hero. While their species and gender cannot be changed once set, new outfit components are earned by playing stages and completing challenges.
* WeNeedADistraction: Their objective in their Green Hill stage Guardian Rock is to cause as much havoc as possible to distract Eggman.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Male Avatars can wear female clothing and vice versa.
