SPOILERS ABOUND!
Shin Megami Tensei I Characters The HeroThe Hero is a guy who lives an ordinary life until he receives the Demon Summoning Program. The first of many silent protagonists. The Steven Report names him as Kazuya. The HeroineLeads the resistance movement against Gotou, and never says another thing after you rescue her from Psycho Diver. The fact that she's described as the 'Eve' to the Hero's Adam implies a romantic connection. The Steven Report names her as Yuka.Law HeroHe's lost his girlfriend (who coincidentally has the same name as the Heroine). He later sacrifices himself to save the Hero, but gets reincarnated as the Mesian hero. Starts off kind, bends to Well Intentioned Extremist, and ends up a Knight Templar. The Steven Report names him as Yuji.Chaos HeroThe Hero rescues him from a gangster named Ozawa. The Chaos Hero spends the rest of the game chasing power, going so far as to fuse himself with a demon to gain it. The Steven Report names him as Takeshi. If the player choses Chaos path, he ends up Drunk On The Dark Side.STEVENBears a striking resemblance to Steven Hawking, and wrote the demon summoning program.YurikoAlso known as the Rie, the Chaos Heroine, and Lilith. Has a teensy bit of an obsession with the Hero, but, well, doesn't get him.OzawaThe jerkass gang leader that was beating up the Chaos Hero at the beginning of the game. The Chaos Hero kills him after gaining power from fusing himself with a demon.Louis Cypher/Lucifer
Lucifer, otherwise known as Louis Cypher, appears first in Shin Megami Tensei and then in the second and third games of the main series. Appearing for the first time in a suit and giving you cryptic and often misleading information, he shows his true colours when you get the Chaos path ending, appearing as a blonde man with horns and wings swathed in white robes. Just don't confuse him with Satan, who actually works for YHVH.
In Shin Megami Tensei II, Lucifer again takes the form of Louis Cypher, in order to convince you to follow the Chaos path. If you chose the Law and Neutral Paths you will face him in battle, but in the Chaos path he will join your party in order to stop Satan and YHVH. According to dialogue, he was ordered by YHVH to cause The Great Destruction with Kuzuryu, the nine-headed dragon that makes up the mountains of Makai, but Lucifer plans to use Kuzuryuu against YHVH instead. If Aleph's alignment is neutral, and he defeats Lucifer without the aid of Satan, Lucifer will warn Aleph that Kuzuryu must be defeated as well since it will go berserk without him to control it.
In Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, he appears in two forms, that of a young blonde-haired boy and an old man in a wheelchair, in both forms accompanied by a nurse in black, who changes ages with him albeit oppositely. When he is young she is old and vice-versa. He is in some way responsible for setting in motion the events of the game by giving Hito-Shura his first Magatama, allowing him to live in the Vortex World. If the optional dungeon in Nocturne is traversed, it is also revealed that he was the one to give candelebra to the Fiends, in order to train Hito-Shura to a level of strength where Hito-Shura is able to beat Lucifer himself and lead a second Rebellion.
In Raidou Kuzunoha Vs King Abaddon, Louis makes an appearance in the Tamonten Shrine as a "blonde young man" who appears to serve as a "spark" for Raidou and his actions. He is also referred to as Beelzebub, according to the Mushibito race due to the fact that they see him as a fly, not as a human.
After you get the "Chaos" ending and start a New Game Plus+ file, Raidou can take case files involving Louis and end up discovering his true identity while also battling his Lucifer form. Raidou can also use a Skill demon to transform as Louis, whose special ability is to gain money from talking to demons in the Dark Realm.
In Strange Journey, Louis Cypher appears as a "blonde woman" in a blue dress. She wears a goat's head hairclip.
Taijorokun/Tai Shang Lao JunAfter demons begin to appear in the streets of Tokyo, the player can go to Inogashira Park and meet an old man who speaks cryptically of the hero gaining great power and of a choice between Law and Chaos. He then conjures up a vision in which the hero, Law Hero and Chaos Hero fight against the devil summoner Douman and are soundly defeated. The vision ends and the old man tells the hero that he is too weak to fight Douman, but that they will likely fight again and that he must be careful. After arriving in the post-apocalyptic world, the player can find the same old man in Ginza, where he will tell the player to return if no path forward seems possible. If the player then says both Echidna and Haniel, the old man will reveal a secret path to the otherwise inaccessible Cathedral. Near the end of the game, as the player prepares to battle Archangel Michael or the Asura Lord/Ahura Mazda, the old man reveals himself to be 太上老君 - shortened in the AGTP translation to Taijorokun (it should be Taijo-rokun, or Tai Shang Lao Jun). After both are defeated (at the end of the Neutral path), he appears in the ending to comment on the risks that the plans of Law and Chaos posed to the future of humankind, and urges the player to help shape that future free of the influence of outside forces. Shin Megami Tensei II Characters Hawk/AlephThe main character in the game, he starts out as an amnesic gladiator. As soon as he becomes a citizen of the Center, he discovers that he was designed to be the Messiah, destined to save the world. In the 'Neutral' alignment ending, prior to Aleph's battle with YHWH, he is forewarned that by defying God's Will, Aleph will suffer a never-ending cycle of punishment, as YHWH would torture Aleph, kill him, reincarnate him, and continue torturing him until the end of time for committing the 'Ultimate Sin' -deiciding God. See more information in the "Jyoji Hijiji" sectionHirokoBethZayin![]() His One Winged Angel form
A devoted member of the Center and its rules, he eventually decides that his masters are not what they seem and vows allegiance to the forces of Law themselves. And in the name of the people he fights against the Center, trying to recruit the hero to his side along the way.
He turns out to be 1/2 of Satan. He merges with Set to become Satan. In the endings of the Neutral and Chaos alignment paths, Satan decides to use the Megiddo Arc (a powerful laser weapon within Eden) to destroy all life on the planet as his judgment. He is killed by Aleph before he can carry out his plans, and his death prompts the appearance of YHWH. In the Law alignment ending, he carries out the plan successfully, but accuses YHVH for committing the sin of genocide afterward and chose to align with Aleph, however, he crumbles to dust after defeating his creator.
Satan makes an appearance as the Ultimate Boss in Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2. He can be fought in the final dungeon, the Sun, where he attempts to deliver his judgment towards the party in the place of God. Unique from other bosses, Satan can only be fought under the Hard mode difficulty, or players transfer the Save Data of Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner onto the sequel. Interestingly, Satan's attacks and speech during battle are reminiscencent of his role and story in Shin Megami Tensei II.
GimelDaleth Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne Characters Main Character/Demi-Fiend/Hito-Shura/Naoki KashimaThe protagonist of SMT Nocturne (known as Demi-Fiend in English version, and Hito-Shura in the Japanese.) Naoki was originally a high school student in modern day Japan. He was lured by his class teacher Yuko Takao to the hospital and survived after the destruction - Conception. And then he was given the "gift" - Magatama which contains the essence of demonic power by Lucifer and transformed into a half-human, half-demon being. His body was then filled with black stripes look like shaman tattoo and a horn appeared behind his metencephalon indicates that he has ingested the Magatama. He obtains the power to fight with powerful skills, communicate with and summon other demons. Explained by the game creators, Hito-Shura means one who bears demonic skin with human heart. The first one who addressed him as Hito-Shura in the game was Futomimi. And then Hikawa - the one who triggered the Conception, noticed that from the Miroku Scripture, the author already predicted Hito-Shura will be born after the Conception and influence the result of re-creation. Thus every chosen human in the Vortex World tried to convince Hito-Shura to agree with their Reason / Kotowari, the concept that needed for creating the new world. He finally opened the path to Kagutsuchi.Depending on the decision made by player, he will either create a new world, return it to the original state before the Conception occurred, or destroy the metempsychosis of creation. The demon motif in the Protagonist's jacket sleeves are icons that were used to indicate demon numbers and status in the classic Megami Tensei games. Though the protagonist's personality is up to the player, Chiaki's insult around the beginning of the game would suggest that he likes video games and dabbles in the occult. During a New Cycle, you have the option of giving the Protagonist a leather jacket instead of the hooded jacket at the start. The costume change only lasts until the Conception, but the true effect of the new jacket is reflected in the status parameters, which will be slightly different than the base stats of the hooded jacket. Makes a cameo appearance as a Bonus Boss in Digital Devil Saga: Episode 1, who is infamously hard.Yuko TakaoA teacher at the high school that the main character attends. She is popular with the students because she emphasizes logical thinking over rote memorization. She joins forces with Hikawa to bring about the Conception because she is tired of the world, which she sees as full of people meaninglessly wasting their potential, without the energy or drive to make a difference. As the Maiden of the Vortex World, she expected to be the cornerstone of a world of freedom, but finds herself betrayed by Hikawa and used as a mere tool in his quest for a world of stillness. Her failing is a lack of self-esteem in her own power and ability to change the world. This causes her to be easily swayed by those who possess the confidence and conviction that she lacks, such as Hikawa. In her mind, she was only one small person unable to make a significant difference to a big world. In reality, she was well respected by her students and was already influencing their lives in a positive way: a good example of this is Chiaki's desire to ask Yuko for advice on what she should do after graduation. She worships a 'goddess' named Aradia, a being who comes from a world that is not quite real and can only give hope to her followers, as she has no real power. She possesses Yuko from time to time in order to speak with the demi-fiend. During possessions, Yuko's face is replaced with an odd shape that looks like a neon purple Rorschach inkblot, and her body sways side to side, twitching sometimes.Chiaki Hayasaka/TachibanaA classmate of the main character in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Her name can be changed at the beginning. Born and raised in an upper-class family, she has a habit of talking down to people. Like Isamu Nitta, she is also drawn to the Conception. Though confused and scared at first, she quickly adapts to the law of the Vortex World and follows the path of creation. Calling the previous world too cluttered and full of unnecessary things, she resolves to create a simple, primal world where the strong reign supreme and the weak are disposed of. Thus, she establishes the Reason of Yosuga. However, in such a world, the weaker citizens, even among those of the elite would automatically be considered the "lower class". The only way for Chiaki to avoid this fate is to be the strongest of the strong, something that she believes she will be as the creator of the world. The irony is that her world of safety would be one of eternal paranoia and torment, as she defends her position from all threats- perceived and real- every single day for the rest of her life. However, one would have to admit she would have been able to do so, as she is one of the three most powerful bosses in the game. Furthermore, the nature of Yosuga means that Chiaki will be fought in her final form whether the Demi-Fiend carries her Reason or not, with only her pre- and post-battle speech changing. It is interesting to note that in the entire game, Chiaki is the only thing that is ever explicitly referred to as "evil". However, if the Demi Fiend supports her reason, she also makes it clear that she truely does like the Demi Fiend and even as they fight to the death, she tells him that she'll always cherish their friendship. After you beat her, she accepts her loss with dignity.Isamu NittaA classmate of the main character in Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. His name can be changed at the beginning. Isamu seems to be a rather easygoing fellow, but complains a lot over things he considers bothersome and tedious. He is one of the survivors of the Conception, and manages to get around relatively unscathed until he is captured by the Mantra demons. He becomes aware of the law of the Vortex World after spending a lot of time traveling the Amala Network, and follows the path of creation, leaning towards individuality. He was tired of being just another face in the crowd during his old life, and decides to fashion a world where people would go about their own business, not getting in the way of another. This gives birth to the Reason of Musubi. If his world comes into being, no one can become a leader nor a follower, as everyone would just go about their own way, not caring about anyone else. Even as it's creator, Isamu might serve as the Musubi world's paradox one day. As an individual, he does not have the adequate capacity, both physically and mentally, to grant all of his needs by himself. There will come a time when he will enlist the help of another, effectively breaking his own laws. If the player makes Hito-Shura choose to align with Musubi, then he does not have to battle Noah in the Tower of Kagutsuchi. Otherwise, he will face it's two forms, shapeless at first, then gaining power and taking the shape of Isamu's profile.HikawaChief Technical Director of a large communications company called Cybers, and a high-ranking officer of the Gaea cult. He is said to be the one actually responsible for the occurrence of the Conception. After the emergence of the Vortex World, he organizes the Assembly of Nihilo, which becomes one of the two strongest demonic forces (the other being the Mantra). His dream is a world of silence, where the dangerous passion of man is neutralized, and everyone is at one with the world: this, he calls the Reason of Shijima. Hikawa is a mysterious man because he deliberately stays underneath the radar. He was able to hold a powerful position in a prominent communications company without leaking a hint as to his true belief. After the Conception occurs, many believe it to have been the work of the ancient Assembly of Nihilo; no-one suspects that it was actually Hikawa. He is a man devoted to the Reason of Shijima from the very beginning and acts accordingly. Every move he makes is calm and calculated as he swiftly moves his way towards realizing his vision of a new world. But also like Shijima, he is utterly emotionless in his actions, using Yuko as his pawn and destroying all resistance with no hesitation and minimal effort. Hikawa describes his Reason to the Demi-Fiend as preventing the flame of passion (which warms and nourishes) from turning into a blazing inferno of consuming desire (which destroys). He never seems to connect that it was his own cold passion that lead to more destruction than any other human could ever have caused. He is ignorant, however, of what his Reason would mean: the flame of passion would actually be extinguished, denying the entire world of positive emotions like love and joy. If the Demi-Fiend opposes him, however, his last words reflect his final revelation: "It's so quiet...too quiet..."Jyoji HijiriA writer for an occult magazine. He meets the main character while collecting data for an article on the riot at Yoyogi Park. Even after the Conception, his sense of duty as a reporter pushes him to investigate further. He considers himself too weak to survive in the Vortex World, so he stays within the Terminal Room, studying the Terminals and their connection to the mysterious Amala Network. Hijiri's main motivation is to discover the truth. Even after the Conception, this goal does not change. He does not pursue Hikawa out of a sense of moral righteousness, but simply because he wishes to learn the meaning behind the Vortex World. Soon, knowledge becomes everything to him, from him disregarding the worth of human life in the Vortex World to bribing the Demi-Fiend with the facts that he has discovered through the Amala Terminals. With knowledge comes power, and with power comes corruption. Hijiri does not seem to realize that he could create a new world until he learns this information through the Amala Terminal. It is also notable that he never mentions the dream that the Demi-Fiend, Chiaki and Isamu all share upon entering the Vortex World. Completing the optional Fourth Kalpa dungeon reveals that Hijiri actually died when the Conception occurred, having failed to reach the hospital in time. However, he continues to exist in the Vortex World as his punishment for committing the "ultimate sin". Hijiri's punishment is to be trapped in an endless cycle of suffering, death and rebirth, being forced to witness the creation and destruction of each world without having any chance to affect the outcome. Because of this, there is speculation that Hijiri is a reincarnation of Aleph, the main character of Shin Megami Tensei II, who committed the "ultimate sin" by defeating YHWH at the end of the game.FutomimiThe leader of the Manikins. He has the ability to tell the immediate future. After he and the other Manikins imprisoned in Mizuchi's mirage had been freed, Futomimi was grateful to Hito-Shura. His visions led the Manikins in their path to find their Reason, wishing to make a world full of Manikins where they were no longer just slaves, (or worthless mud dolls as Chiaki liked to claim) starting with the exodus that led to the creation of their village in Asakusa, with him meditating in seclusion in their holy land, Mifunashiro. Sadly, his defeat at the hands of Chiaki (or Hito-Shura if he chose to align with Yosuga) left the Manikins without hope, left to watch the new world's birth with no way to control it. Futomimi is to be later reborn, called back into the Vortex World by the Afterlife Bell. His imprisoned spirit as a wild and rebellious but repentant yanki in the previous life can be liberated from the Maze of Hell in the 4th Kalpa of the Labyrinth of Amala. He will gain new powers and will become part of the Kishin clan, able to be summoned in the Cathedral Of Shadows as Hito-Shura's minion. An interesting attribute of Futomimi is that he is the only Manikin that does not have constant involuntary spasms. This may be because of the purity of his spirit, or possibly because he was born from a single person's emotions (as opposed to other Manikins, who were born from many different people's emotions). Persona Characters Main Character/Naoya ToudouThe main character of Megami Ibunroku Persona. He is widely described as the "Boy With The Pierced Ear" but with the loss of the earring in the NA adaptation, it has been changed to simply "Boy". The name is completely up to the player (the manga had him named Naoya Toudou). He is a student who attends St. Hermelin High School, and regularly visits his sick friend Maki Sonomura at the hospital. He uses shortswords and katanas as main weapons, packs an MP 5 sidearm, and his Persona grants him Wind magic. His Persona is Seimen Kongou (Starion in NA) of the Emperor Arcanum and his ultimate persona is Amon Ra. Dragged along to play the demon summoning game "Persona" to settle a bet between Masao Inaba and Hidehiko Uesugi, Naoya and his other classmates Kei Nanjou, Eriko Kirishima, Yuka Ayase and Yukino Mayuzumi go through with it, and they all catch a glimpse of a crying little girl afterwards. Lightning flashes, and everyone is knocked out, sent into the border between consciousness and unconsciousness. An enigmatic being who introduces himself as Philemon meets Naoya in a dream, asking him to state his name. Upon doing so, Philemon is impressed, for not everyone who comes to his realm knows who they really are. Naoya is presented with the power of Persona, and then sent back to reality. Upon regaining consciousness, everyone seems to have had the same dream. Naoya is the last to wake up, and finds himself in the school infirmary with some of the classmates involved. The school nurse and their homeroom teacher Saeko Takami urge the group to go to the hospital to have themselves checked up, and they also take the opportunity to visit Maki again. The group waits for Maki outside the ICU where she is being treated after complaining of severe pain. Tremors shake the building, and when the door to the ICU is opened, there is nothing behind it but a wall. Demons soon run wild in the hospital, attacking the people inside. Upon encountering a gang of demons, Naoya and his friends all awaken to their Personae. He is then designated as the leader. In the NA version, Naoya not only loses his earring, but is also given red hair and a lighter skin tone, making him look more Caucasian. Naoya is given several opportunities to show the kind of person that he is during the course of the game. This will significantly affect the outcome of the story. Tropes associated with Naoya:
Mary/Maki Sonomura
Maki "Mary" Sonomura is a student from St. Hermelin High School who has been sick for some time now. She is often bedridden, suffers from constant pain and episodic fits of dementia. When she feels fine, Maki spends her days painting disturbing still-life pictures, dreaming about a world of her own, and waiting for her friends to come visit her. When Mikage-cho (Lunarvale) changes, she's suddenly up and about, and is also able to use a Persona. She uses bows in combat, has a .45 sidearm, and her Persona dabbles in Ice magic and Healing abilities. She starts out with Matsu (Maria in NA) of the Priestess Arcanum and her ultimate Persona is Valzante (a misnomer of Verdandi).
Naoya and the rest of Maki's friends come visit her in the hospital following a check-up that they had to go through because of an accident while playing the demon sumoning game, "Persona". All is well until Maki complains of severe pain, and is taken to the ICU. Following an earthquake that shook the hospital, the ICU disappears and Maki is nowhere to be found until after Mikage-cho's transformation. She emerges from the hole in the school wall later on and kills a demon with her Persona. When asked by her friends how she could suddenly move about and even fight, Maki insists that she's always been like this.
Indirectly, Maki is the main reason for Mikage-cho's gradual transformation. The town slowly starts to turn into the "Ideal World" in her mind that she imagines is real during lonely times.
In her world, Maki is healthy, demons run wild, the Police Station and the Hospital do not exist (she hates those places, deeming them unnecessary in her utopia), and on one end, everything is good; but on the other end, everything is evil. The two parts of the town are divided in half by an ominous barrier. The "Ideal World" comes into being when Maki is put under the DVA machine by Takahisa Kandori, the president of SEBEC, who kidnapped her by transporting the ICU room to the SEBEC building, leaving behind a wall in it's place.
Though Maki's world has become real, part of her accepts, and at the same time rejects this development. Hence, three manifestations of her psyche emerge: The "Ideal" Maki that joins the party, Mai, her malevolent side (Mae in the NA version) and Aki, her innocent side (Maggie in the NA version). The "Ideal" Maki is the same age, while Mai and Aki appear as Maki when she was a child.
Depending on how Naoya conducts himself during the course of the game, the "Ideal" Maki will either succeed in freeing herself from the DVA machine's influence and return Mikage-cho to it's former state, or become ridden with guilt about her deep-seated nihilistic wishes and lose her identity forever.
In the NA version, Maki was given reddish hair and a lighter skin tone to make her look Caucasian. Her name was changed to Mary.
Maki later makes an appearance in both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. In Persona 2: Innocent Sin, she is a supporting character, working part-time at Hiiragi Pyschotherapy in Sumaru City to become a therapist like her employer, Reiko. She feels that helping troubled people is the best way for her to cope with the fact that she almost destroyed her hometown because of her fantasy world coming to life and almost completely superimposing the normal one.
She will later receive a flower from the Time Count, and give it to Jun as his ultimate weapon. Maki mentions what she was told by the count about the flower, that it was "the representation of a destiny that must be passed on". Maki will eventually fight alongside her former classmates from St. Hermelin once more to repel the invasion of Sumaru City by Hitler's Last Battalion unless certain conditions are met earlier in the game.
In Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Maki's role as a supporting character is somewhat more significant. She feels the resonance of a Persona from Maya Amano, and is able to tell from this that the latter is acquainted with Yukino Mayuzumi, a former classmate of hers. She later appears at the Science Lab scenario in Kei Nanjou's route. Along with Reiji Kido, she will help Maya's party through the sewer entrance, coordinating their movements with the floodgate controls. Maki will rejoin the rest of her former classmates later in the game, fighting off the New World Order soldiers that are trying to take over the city.
Tropes associated with Maki:
Mark/Masao InabaMasao "Mark" Inaba is a laid back boy who is friends with the Naoya and Maki Sonomura. He loves art, has his own music band, dances crazy, and is slowly developing a crush on Maki. He wields axes in battle, totes a Franchi SPAS12 shotgun, and his Persona excels in physical skills and Gravity powers. His starter Persona is Ogoun (Shaman in NA) of the Chariot Arcanum, and his Ultimate Persona is Susa-no-Ou (Demo in NA) Masao doesn't believe in the demon summoning game "Persona" one bit. He holds a bet with classmate Hidehiko Uesugi to prove that he's right on it being a fake, with the loser having to treat everyone who was dragged into it at the Peace Diner. Masao thinks that he won at first, because nothing happened after the ritual. But then a crying young girl appears, and they are all hit by flashes of lightning that send them to the border of consciousness and unconsciousness. Upon waking up at the clinic, Masao is thrilled that they were being sent to the hospital for a checkup, because this means that he gets to visit Maki again in the process. After the event where the ICU disappears and demons run rampant in the building, Masao awakens to his Persona along with the others, and urges the Protagonist to find Maki. Because of his carefree nature even in the face of danger, Masao gets into arguments with the stiff Kei Nanjou, who always belittles him. In the NA version, Masao's appearance is heavily altered, turning him into an African-American boy with stereotypical slang injected to his lines to make him sound convincing, and make the party a little more "culturally diverse". Tropes associated with Masao:
Nate Trinity/Kei Nanjou
Kei "Nate" Nanjou is a snooty rich boy who is heir to a family fortune. He shares an almost paternal bond with his butler Yamaoka, who has been taking care of him in place of his parents. Kei wields long swords and broadswords, is a crack shot with a sniper rifle, and his Persona gives him Light and Earth elemental powers. His starter Persona is Aizen Myouou (Voodoo in NA) of the Hierophant Arcanum.
Coming from a high class family, Kei uses his status, wealth and knowledge a lot to negotiate demons.
Kei is also witness to the the bet between Masao Inaba and Hidehiko Uesugi about the effectivity of the demon summoning game "Persona". Like Yukino Mayuzumi, he chooses to just watch, thinking that everyone was just catering to Masao's stupid endeavors. Nonetheless, he sees the crying little girl following the end of the ritual, and is sent to the border of consciousness and unconsciousness afterwards.
When the group was told by their teacher to go to the hospital and get a checkup, Kei's butler Yamaoka meets them at the school gate, offering to take everyone to the hospital via the Nanjou family's limousine. Kei refuses, wanting to walk with his friends instead. Yamaoka yields, but secretly follows Kei to the hospital.
When the ICU where Maki Sonomura was being treated disappears after a small earthquake, the group decides to move to the lobby to call anyone who could help. Kei is shocked to find Yamaoka sprawled on the hospital lobby floor, mortally wounded by a demon attack. Yamaoka knows that he is not long for this world, and his dying wish is that Kei would become a great man someday even after he has gone. Kei flies into a rage, awakening to his Persona along with his friends and destroys the demons that killed Yamaoka. He resolves to fulfill the late butler's wish, find out what caused the sudden influx of demons in Mikage-cho (Lunarvale), and bring the person responsible to justice. Yamaoka would later eventually fulfill his promise of watching over Kei by becoming his Ultimate Persona (although he is of the Judgment Arcanum instead of Hierophant. This is only in the American version).
In the NA version, Kei is the only playable character given an actual last name to substitute the Japanese one, making him the heir to the Trinity Family trust instead of the Nanjou Group. His full name became Nate Trinity, and was given blond hair and fairer skin to match the localization.
Kei later makes an appearance in both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. In Persona 2: Innocent Sin, he is a supporting character who appears at the Abandoned Factory in Konan, drawn to rumors that a person resembling Takahisa Kandori is in Sumaru City (The person in question turns out to be Reiji Kido, who isn't too happy about being mistaken as his hated half-brother). When you talk to him, Kei will give Tatsuya Suou his ultimate weapon. During the invasion of Hitler's Last Battalion, he joins his former classmates to fight against the Nazis unless certain conditions are met earlier in the game.
In Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, he is a playable character. Sneak mentions that there are two people (a man and a woman) investigating the New World Order. If Maya spreads the rumor that the person with information on the NWO is a man, you will get Kei to join. He now uses katanas like Tatsuya, and when using his demon contacts, Kei still mentions his beloved butler Yamaoka, and how he intends to honor the promise he made years ago to become the #1 man in Japan as the latter watches over him from above.
Kei will take the group to a Science Lab run by Tatsuzou Sudou and funded by the Nanjou Group, where youths who allegedly performed the Joker Curse are kidnapped and drained of Kegare. The party will run into Kei's old classmates Reiji Kido and Maki Sonomura around the sewer entrance, assisting in their covert infiltration by working the floodgates. Kei will rejoin the rest of his former classmates later in the game (with Tatsuya taking his place in Maya's party), fighting off the New World Order soldiers that are trying to take over the city.
Kei has but one weakness, and that is the silly-sounding pharmacy song played in the chain of drugstores owned by the Tadashi family. This proverbial crack in Kei's armor first manifested in Megami Ibunroku Persona, and still haunts him up to now in Eternal Punishment. Kei simply cannot stand it, and feels like he's being hypnotized upon hearing it in any form.
Tropes associated with Kei:
Brad/Hidehiko Uesugi
Hidehiko "Brown" Uesugi is the resident class clown of St. Hermelin, relying on stupid puns and antiquated jokes to get attention (this is also used in his negotiation skills). He is the one who introduces the demon summoning game "Persona" to his classmates. Hidehiko uses spears and quarterstaves, sidles a TMP machine gun sidearm, and his Persona gives him Wind and Force abilities. His starter Persona is Nemain (Talon NA) of the Justice Arcana, and his ultimate Persona is Tyr (Darkside in NA)
Hidehiko pesters his classmates to try out the game "Persona" in order to impress them, but Masao Inaba doesn't believe that it will actually work. They both hold a bet, with the loser having to treat everyone who was dragged into it at the Peace Diner. Masao thinks that he won at first, because nothing happened after the ritual. Hidehiko complains, saying that Masao didn't try hard enough when it was his turn to perform. But then a crying young girl appears, lightning struck down Naoya, Kei, Masao and Yukino, leaving Hidehiko, Eriko and Yuka in shock and they quickly moved the four into the infirmary.
Hidehiko is nowhere to be found afterwards, but when Mikage-cho (Lunarvale) changes, you will see him imprisoned at the Police Station along with Masao, who was captured after going out through the hole in the school wall to procure guns there with Kei Nanjou. (Kei barely managed to escape with the equipment) After freeing them both and fighting off some demons (causing Hidehiko's "forced" awakening from being attacked), Hidehiko will pester you to have him join the party. If you take him along, you will not be able to get Reiji Kido, Yuka Ayase or Eriko Kirishima later.
If the path to the good ending is revealed, Hidehiko will reveal that he is using his 'class clown' personality for attention as this is the only way he can think of in order to be accepted.
Like Yuka, Hidehiko's features weren't changed much for the NA version, but his kanji puns and old timer gags were altered, fitted with easy-to-digest local jokes. His name was also changed to Brad.
Hidehiko later makes an appearance in both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. In Persona 2: Innocent Sin, he is a supporting character. Hidehiko is now a popular variety-talk show host, and his ego has swelled to the point of no return, especially getting nationwide attention for the rumor that he is the boy-toy of actress Junko Kurosu (which turns out to be false, since he actually despises the actress for having as big an ego as he does. Even so, he still addresses the latter as "Junko-chan"). Unless certain conditions are met, he will fight alongside his former classmates from St. Hermelin once more to repel the invasion of Sumaru City by Hitler's Last Battalion, assisting Tatsuya Suou's party so they can go to Xibalba.
In Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Hidehiko is still a supporting character. He will assist Maya Amano's party through Eriko's connection with him, scouting out the correct order of "Ba Gua" gates to help them escape the "Kimon Tonkou" spell that imprisoned them in the reverse dimension of the Sumaru TV Station. Hidehiko will rejoin the rest of his former classmates later in the game, fighting off the New World Order soldiers that are trying to take over the city.
Tropes associated with Hidehiko:
Ellen/Eriko Kirishima![]() Her look in Persona 1
![]() Her look in Persona 2 games
Eriko "Elly" Kirishima is an aspiring fashion model and has gone to England for overseas study, considered a model student. For most of the time, she is smart, however, she tends to fail to realize serious life and death situation. She wields a rapier and is armed with a rifle for sidearms, and her Persona is mostly about Light based attacks. Her starter Persona is Nike of the Judgment Arcanum and her Ultimate persona is (St.) Michael.
Eriko was present when Masao Inaba and Hidehiko Uesugi place their bet about the "Persona Summoning" game, and she placed her bet on Hidehiko. The bet at first goes into Masao's favor, but she remained calm, until a vision of a crying little girl was seen. When lightning struck by, Eriko became ecstatic at the result, but that quickly turned into worry when the lightning struck down Naoya, Masao, Kei Nanjou and Yukino Mayuzumi. She, Hidehiko and Yuka Ayase quickly turned the four to the infirmary, but Hidehiko quickly left the scene, leaving her and Yuka to explain what happened.
When demons started roaming the town, Eriko tried to contact the Police Station, but it was already infested with demons. Catching up with her friends in the hospital, she encounters more demons and awakened her Persona. After finding out her power, she starts imagining herself as a guardian angel to protect her friend, but later found out that her friends can also summon Persona. She later opts to help Maki's mother who is injured and hid at the shrine and learnt about the SEBEC corporation. While Kei and Masao opts to investigate further, Eriko, Yukino and Naoya sends Maki's mother to the school infirmary. Eriko later tries to help Yukino protect the school from further demon invasion.
Eriko is later found in the Subway station. If Hidehiko is not in the party, the party can re-recruit Eriko.
If the path to the good ending is attained, Eriko later reveals that she was burdened with the status that everyone put her with. Deep down, all she wanted was just to have a normal life like a normal student.
In the NA version, like Kei, Eriko was given blond hair and fairer skin to match the localization. Her name is also changed into Ellen.
Eriko later makes an appearance in both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. In Persona 2: Innocent Sin, she is a supporting character. Eriko has succeeded in getting into the modeling business, and is slowly starting to make a name for herself. After Tatsuya Suou received the Oracle of Maiya, Yukino decides to look for Eriko's aid to unpuzzle the metaphor behind the poem. Unless certain conditions are met, she will fight alongside her former classmates from St. Hermelin once more to repel the invasion of Sumaru City by Hitler's Last Battalion, assisting Tatsuya's party so they can go to Xibalba.
In Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Eriko is a playable character. Sneak mentions that there are two people (a man and a woman) investigating the New World Order. If Maya spreads the rumor that the person with information on the NWO is a woman, you will get Eriko to join. She still uses fencing swords, and will immediately establish rapport with Ulala Serizawa, who shares her love of fortune telling and ghost stories. It is also established that during the course of the first Persona, she had a crush or unrequited love towards Naoya.
Eriko will take the group to the Sumaru TV station to investigate if Chizuru Ishigami (also known as "Wang Long Chizuru") is really involved in the New World Order. Their suspicions were confirmed as Chizuru's shikigami (who was disguised as a cat) traps them with a spell called "Kimon Tonkou" taking them to a reverse dimension. With her knowledge of the occult, Eriko concludes that they would have to find and enter the "Ba Gua" gates located on each the studio entrances in order to escape. Eriko enlists the help of TV host and former classmate Hidehiko Uesugi to find the right order of the Ba Gua gates by scouting them out back in the real world. Inside the reverse dimension however, a stalker of Eriko lies in wait, taking the rare chance to get close to his idol.
Eriko will rejoin the rest of her former classmates later in the game (with Tatsuya taking her place in Maya's party), fighting off the New World Order soldiers that are trying to take over the city.
Tropes associated with Eriko:
Alana/Yuka AyaseYuka "Alana" Ayase is a classmate of Naoya who hardly takes things seriously, and can be irritating at times. She is identified as a "kogal" due to her expensive taste in fashion and odd way of speaking. Yuka employs whips for battle, uses a .45 handgun, and her Persona grants her Negative Status attacks and Fire abilities. Her Persona is Houris (Fury in the NA version) of the Magician Arcanum, and her ultimate persona is Frey (Flare in the NA version) After participating in the demon summoning game "Persona", Yuka also went through the borderline realm of consciousness and unconsciousness after seeing a crying young girl and being knocked out by lightning resulting from the ritual. However, she does not follow the group to the hospital, opting to go on a shopping trip instead since she doesn't feel sick in the least. As a result, her awakening isn't triggered immediately. During the good ending path, Yuka reveals that she has a reputation of a heartbreaker, a girl who dates many boys and dumps almost all of them. The reputation stuck so hard that even though she did have her own standards, people still believe her as a heartbreaker, which distresses her. However, she uses these skills a lot when she negotiates the demons. Because her hair is already dyed blonde, Yuka's only feature alteration in the NA localization is her skin color, and her dialogue was given valley girl overtones as an equivalent to her oddball "kogal" speech. Her name was also changed to Alana. Having Yuka in your party is completely optional. However, she will be the mandatory fifth member if you have not recruited either Eriko Kirishima or Hidehiko Uesugi. You can let her join upon running into her later in the factory located at the south-eastern section of Mikage-Cho (Lunarvale), but she will force her way into the party if the steps to acquire Reiji Kidou isn't fulfilled. Tropes associated with Yuka:
Chris/Reiji Kidou
Reiji "Six-pack Leader" Kido is a loner student who hardly talks to anyone, since his only reason for living is to further his personal vendetta. Despite his anti-social tendencies, many female students of St. Hermelin take quite a shine to him. Reiji uses gloves and an AK-47 in combat, and his Persona excels in Physical, Death and Curse skills. His Persona is Breas (Guni in the NA version) of the Devil Arcanum, and his ultimate Persona is Mot (Mondo in the NA Version).
Though rumored as a gang leader thanks to his title, Reiji has no actual subordinates to speak of. The fevered pursuit of his half-brother Takahisa Kandori is the only thing on his mind. Reiji was the product of an affair between Takahisa's father and a mistress, and wants revenge for his mother being abandoned as a result of his birth. It's for this reason alone that Reiji believes Takahisa should pay with his life.
It's a little-known fact that Reiji dabbles in magic tricks on the side, specifically with playing cards. He uses this skill in demon contacts.
In the NA version, Reiji's name was changed to Chris. No other alterations were made.
Reiji is an optional character like Hidehiko Uesugi, Eriko Kirishima and Yuka Ayase. He is the hardest to get out of all of them, needing several events and NPC conversations to be able to get him to join. The reason for this is that having Reiji will allow your party to be able to contact all kinds of demons successfully.
Reiji later makes an appearance in both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. In Persona 2: Innocent Sin, he is a supporting character. Reiji has long since shed his bad boy image (even going as far as changing his hairstyle to conceal the scar on his forehead, which made him look eerily similar to Takahisa), and has become a knife salesman to support himself and an older live-in partner who he got pregnant. Unfortunately, he is terrible at selling because even though he looks respectable now, his Persona still exudes the same kind of intimidating aura, scaring away potential customers. He reluctantly asks for advice from Kenta "Toro" Yokouchi, whose own Persona has made him very successful in business.
He will be in the Abandoned Factory later on, a little insulted that he was mistaken for his long-dead half-brother, and decides to beat on some demons there to blow off some steam. Lisa Silverman will talk him into giving up his gloves, which will become her ultimate weapon. Unless certain conditions are met, he will fight alongside his former classmates from St. Hermelin once more to repel the invasion of Sumaru City by Hitler's Last Battalion, assisting Tatsuya Suou's party so they can go to Xibalba.
In Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Reiji is still a supporting character, but his role is shorter. He appears at the Science Lab scenario in Kei Nanjou's route. Along with Maki Sonomura, he will help Maya's party through the sewer entrance, coordinating their movements with the floodgate controls. He will rejoin his former classmates later in the game, fighting off the New World Order soldiers that are trying to take over the city.
Tropes associated with Reiji:
Yuki/Yukino Mayuzumi
Yukino "Yukki" Mayuzumi was a yanki (juvenile delinquent) who did nothing but cause trouble before. But thanks to the intervention of her homeroom teacher Saeko Takami, she walks the straight and narrow path now, becoming a mother figure of sorts for her classmates. Despite her change of heart, Yukino still retains some of her yanki ways, employing throwing blades and a double-barreled shotgun in battle. Her Persona grants her both Fire and Nuclear abilities. Her Persona is Vesta of the Empress Arcana, and her ultimate Persona is Durga.
Yukino was among those dragged in to help settle a bet between Masao Inaba and Hidehiko Uesugi, but she does not actively participate in the demon summoning game "Persona", opting instead to watch and keep her classmates out of trouble. Even so, she is still affected by the result of the foolish venture, sent to the border of consciousness and unconsciousness after being struck by lightning. Yukino awakens to her Persona in the hospital following a checkup and an unplanned visit to Maki Sonomura (who was also admitted there) that turns sour with demons suddenly wreaking havoc all over the place.
In the NA version, Yukino is the only character whose name (dropping only the 'no' from Yukino) and features were relatively untouched during the transition, but also has the shortest role in the main story arc due to her leaving the group after returning to the school. The only way to get her back is to trigger the Snow Queen Quest, which was removed and only officially playable in the JP version. In this part, if Naoya opts not to continue investigating SEBEC, they would find a mysterious mask in the school. Saeko Takami gets possessed by the mask after telling them the legend of the Snow Queen. Yukino joins the party, wanting to save the teacher she owes her new life to.
Yukino later makes an appearance in both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. In Persona 2: Innocent Sin, she is a playable character, working as a freelance photographer under Shunsuke Fujii (who she has had a crush on for a long while), and is friends with teen magazine journalist Maya Amano. Yukino also reprises her role as a mother figure, this time for Tatsuya and the crew. She is later replaced by Jun, deciding to fight alongside her former classmates from St. Hermelin once more to repel the invasion of Sumaru City by Hitler's Last Battalion unless certain conditions are met earlier in the game.
In Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Yukino's role becomes short again as she becomes just a supporting character and assists in Maya's current assignment by getting in touch with her former teacher Saeko Takami, who now works at Seven Sisters High School. Yukino will rejoin the rest of her former classmates later in the game, fighting off the New World Order soldiers that are trying to take over the city.
Tropes associated with Yukino:
IgorIgor is the mysterious proprietor of The Velvet Room. He is a marionette given life by Philemon. His noticeable appearance comes from his Tengu/Pinocchio-like long nose. In Megami Ibunroku Persona, Igor has calls himself "a servant of Philemon". He is always found in The Velvet Room between consciousness and unconsciousness. He uses a phone made of bone to call up Personae from the depths of the soul. In Persona 2, Igor remains mostly unchanged. He is still a servant of Philemon and he handles Persona summoning in much the same way. In Persona 3, he is no longer seen with the phone, instead, he has his assistant Elizabeth handle Persona fusion. Only Minato Arisato can enter The Velvet Room, and he does so for the first time in a dream. None of the other Persona users can see The Velvet Room. The protagonist signs a contract with Pharos and Igor at the start of the game agreeing to take responsibility for his actions. Philemon is never mentioned. In A Certain Day of Summer, Igor decides to reward Minato Arisato by reviewing his memories of past events. The first event is something that happened after the trip to Yakushima. Igor gives a key to Aegis and allows her access to Elizabeth's services. In Persona 4, he is seen with a new assistant named Margaret.
Persona 2 Characters Tatsuya Suou
Tatsuya Suou is the main character of Persona 2: Innocent Sin. He is a senior at Seven Sisters High School, a rather aloof boy who doesn't have many friends, often preferring to be by himself and tool around with his treasured motorcycle. Tatsuya uses katanas for battle, and his Persona gives him powers of Fire.
Despite his seemingly standoffish demeanor, Tatsuya is considered to be the coolest guy in Seven Sisters High School, earning him admiration by most of the female students. Childhood friend Lisa Silverman has been pursuing him for some time now, much to his discomfort and chagrin. Tatsuya also shares a special bond with Jun Kurosu, who exchanged mementos with him as a child.
During a confrontation with Eikichi "Captain Death" Mishina at Sumaru Prison (a live house where Eikichi's band "Gas Chamber" often practices) Tatsuya reawakens to his Persona ability which had been suppressed ever since middle school, where he almost killed some boys that he was fighting with.
He later meets Maya Amano and Yukino Mayuzumi at Sevens, going with them to investigate the Joker Charm and find out why the Joker is so obsessed with killing him, as was revealed when he appeared and assaulted them prior.
Upon Maya's demise, Philemon tells Tatsuya and the group that they have the potential to change time and bring her back to life, but at the inevitable expense of their memories. Though initially hesitant, Tatsuya goes through with it, promising to meet with everyone in the new world. Midway through the process, Tatsuya loses control, and starts refusing to forget what happened. This was the sin that would soon cause history to repeat itself.
Tatsuya is first seen at the Araya Shrine, pondering the sin he had committed on becoming the paradox of this world. He sets out to correct this error on his own, trying his darnedest not to involve Maya in it, fearing that she would die again if her memories from the other side return. His efforts would prove fruitless because of Nyarlathotep's constant interference and Maya's nagging curiosity towards Tatsuya (who is referred to as the "Déjà Vu Boy") and why she seems to know him from somewhere. He later joins Maya in the fight against the New World Order, resolving to do a better job of protecting her this time around.
Maya AmanoIn Innocent Sin, Maya Amano is a writer for Kismet Publishing working on the teen magazine Coolest. In the events of hearing rumors regarding a wish granting genie called Joker-sama, who grants anyone any wish, Maya became intrigued and tries to investigate behind the rumors. Her investigation ends up in the Seven Sisters Academy, in which she meets Tatsuya Suou and the others, setting the events of Innocent Sin. Maya oftentimes found herself taking a type of leadership role within the group, despite not being the protagonist. Her unstoppable optimism and kindheartedness proved to inspire and encourage the group throughout the events of the game, making her an unforgettable force within the world they inhabited. In Eternal Punishment, she lives again, thanks to the ultimate sacrifice of the group to wind time backwards in exchange for their memories. Though she has forgotten the events of the other side, a chance meeting with Tatsuya Suou on the way to work stirs up feelings of Déjà Vu in her. The feelings of familiarity intensify after he shows up following an encounter with demons released by the Joker in Seven Sisters High School. Tatsuya hands her a Sevens School Emblem and asks her to spread the rumor that it keeps the Joker away, and that she should try to forget about this incident for her own good. However, Maya chooses to press on, burning the emblem and going against his warning. Along with Ulala Serizawa, Katsuya Suou, Baofu, and later Eriko Kirishima and Kei Nanjou, she delves deeper into a convoluted series of events that she eventually realizes are those that parallel what she has experienced before in an alternate reality, and all just to sate her nagging curiosity over the "Déjà Vu Boy", who she truly believes is a person she once knew and cared for. Tropes associated with Maya:
Lisa SilvermanLisa "Ginko" Silverman is a popular girl at Seven Sisters High School. Despite her Caucasian lineage, she was born and raised in Japan and does not know any English, but she has a habit of lacing her already haphazard use of Japanese with some Chinese words, imitating her favorite Kung Fu movie heroes. Lisa uses gloves, claws and other hand implements in battle, and her Persona gives her Earth elemental powers. Lisa is a big fan of martial arts movies, especially ones by Bruce Lee. She is one of the more popular girls at Seven Sisters High School, and harbors a crush for Tatsuya. However, she and Kasugayama High School leader Eikichi Mishina have a confrontational relationship akin to that of Kei Nanjou and Masao Inaba from Megami Ibunroku Persona. During a heated exchange early on, Eikichi gives her the nickname "Ginko" (gin means silver in Japanese, taken from her last name and ko is a common Japanese name suffix for females) as an insult. Much to Lisa's chagrin, the name pretty much stuck. However, she was able to counter Eikichi by giving him the pejorative moniker "Captain Underwear". Lisa was the top candidate for Miss Sevens, a beauty pageant/popularity contest held at Seven Sisters High School. Most people assumed she spoke English. Lisa and her two friends Asacchi and Meepo were selected to be in the idol group MUSES, created from a rumor. The song that MUSES sings, with Lisa as the lead vocal and leader of the group, is called "Joker" which encourages people to call Joker to solve their problems. She then recites a piece from the Oracle of Maiya, the song of a foreign land portion being fulfilled through Lisa (who despite having been born and raised in Japan is technically a foreigner) becoming a idol and singing at a live concert that was highly publicized. Lisa comes from a wealthy family, and lives in a giant Japanese-style manor. Her father Steven Silverman insists on raising Lisa to be a traditional Japanese girl. Lisa refuses to follow his father's wishes, and often resorts to her haphazard use of Cantonese as a form of rebellion. In Eternal Punishment, she doesn't remember the events from Innocent Sin; near the end of the game, she is kidnapped and is forced to remember the Other Side, inching the world closer to destruction. Also, you get to fight Tatsuya's sin in the form of Metal Lisa, accompanied by metal versions of Jun and Eikichi.
Eikichi MishinaEikichi Mishina is a flamboyant student of Kasugayama High, the rival school of Seven Sisters High School. Because of Eikichi's early discovery of his Persona powers, he practically rules the school as its "leader", known by many as Captain Death. Eikichi uses a machine gun concealed in a guitar case in battle, and his Persona grants him darkness and water abilities. At a young age, Eikichi was overweight and frequently bullied. After a thug pulled down Eikichi's pants in front of his childhood crush Miyabi Hanakouji, he underwent a radical image makeover, losing weight and training to beat up anyone who mocked him. Eikichi was capable of summoning his own Persona before Tatsuya and Lisa. Like Maya and Eriko, he misunderstood the phenomenon and dubbed his Persona a "Spirit of Death", which he used to punish anyone who challenged him. This acquired him the nickname "Captain Death" — parodied by Lisa Silverman as "Captain Underwear" — and resulted in Eikichi becoming greatly feared and admired within Kasugayama High School. He is a true narcissist, always looking at his hand mirror and praising his own reflection. Eikichi is also the lead singer of a rock band called Gas Chamber, whose logo he wears on his armband. The group consists of Eikichi and three of his friends Shogo, Ken and Takeshi. Eikichi insists that people address him by his stage name, "Michel" (a stylish name that sounds closest to his surname). Though none of his three friends can play instruments well enough, Eikichi believes that the band will achieve fame through his vocals alone. They have composed one song, entitled "Luv Beam". Eikichi often wears makeup and dresses like a visual kei rock star despite the impending fear that his traditionalist father Kankichi would punish him if he knew. He wears a modified version of Kasugayama High's blue uniform, with a tunic over his pants. Though outwardly self-centered and cocky, Eikichi takes his role as the school leader very seriously, and actively looks out for the welfare of his friends and classmates. Eikichi likes to inject broken English in his speech in keeping with his charming image.Jun Kurosu (Kashihara in Eternal Punishment)Jun is a loner student at Kasugayama High School. He used to attend Seven Sisters, the school where his father teaches World History. When Jun awakened to his Persona, he used it to injure some kids who were bullying him, and was soon transferred to Kasugayama High School. Jun uses flowers as throwing weapons, and his Persona gives him Wind abilities. As a child, Jun exchanged mementos with a young Tatsuya Suou, who was his playmate at the Araya Shrine. Jun gave him an engraved zippo lighter, while Tatsuya presented Jun with his father's silver wristwatch. Jun has been carrying the watch ever since. Jun has extensive knowledge of horoscopes and a great interest in horticulture, specifically towards flowers. He is fluent in hanakotoba, or "flower language", which he uses whenever he hands someone a specific flower. The symbolism behind the gesture can be good or ominous, depending on which flower he uses. His mother, Junko Kurosu is a selfish actress who cared more about revitalizing her career than taking care of her family. (and later became one of the Masquerade Executives, Queen Aquarius) Jun's father Akinari Kashihara, died before the game begins and is widely believed to have been a deadbeat parent and a crackpot. Following his father's death, Jun adopted his mother's maiden name, Kurosu. Jun ran away from his mother's house at the age of seventeen and began to manipulate rumours in order to become the Joker; once he did, he acted under direct guidance from Nyarlathotep. He was rescued from this state by Tatsuya Suou and the rest of the party, and from then worked with them to undo the damage he had done while he was the Joker. In Eternal Punishment, Jun's father is alive, so his last name wasn't changed. Jun was lured to the Sky Museum by Tatsuya Sudou, unwittingly helping Maya's party to rescue the schoolchildren who were having their field trip there.
Katsuya SuouUlala Serizawa
Ulala Serizawa has been Maya Amano's friend for years. She often pulls the latter to so-called "matchmaker parties" to meet men, who she's been having considerably no luck with for a while. Ulala does boxing as a means for her to stay fit and defend herself, her power augmented by gloves, knuckles and claws. Her initial Persona Callisto gives her Earth elemental powers, and later gains Wind abilities from her ultimate Persona, Asteria.
She is first introduced in Innocent Sin, when the party visits Gold Gym when searching for King Leo's message. Credited as "Maya's Roomate", she is told by Maya to leave the building due to bombs having been planted in it.
Ulala makes her living by selling lingerie, but is outwardly obsessed with fortune telling, and looks up to the famous TV seer Wang Long Chizuru. One of her contacts involves her telling fortunes to encountered demons, and she also subscribes to a cellphone-based Wang Long fortune service. Ulala is also fond of ghost stories, and will be able to tell some when accompanied by the right party members.
Despite having a complex and concealing resentment towards her friend, Ulala seems to be the cheeriest character in the Eternal Punishment group next to Maya, but panics easily when the situation takes a turn for the worse. She tends to complain a lot, and often fights with Baofu whenever the latter foils her.
Ulala became controlled by the Joker Persona by secretly performing the Joker Curse at Maya (This explains the warning that the latter recieved from the Joker at the beginning of the game). She envies Maya for being a successful working woman and always catching men's eyes, a significant contrast to her seemingly dead-end life as a single woman going on 30 without a stable career and a man by her side. Maya, Katsuya and Baofu were forced to fight her at the Fitness Club GOLD, where she scared the other members away and locked herself in after she got possessed while training. Ulala was later purged of the Joker Persona by Igor in the Velvet Room and she rejoined the party.
After these events, Ulala becomes severely apologetic to Maya, becoming more dedicated in the fight against the Joker, and later the New World Order. During the confrontation with Baofu's shadow at Monado Mandala later on, Ulala feels sympathy for him, and they eventually team up to form a man-searcher company after the defeat of Nyarlathotep.
Ulala appears on the TV show Who's Who in Persona 3. Trish describes her as a woman in her 30's with a beauty spot under her eye, and also mentions that she can dance the flamenco (which is one of her special contacts in Eternal Punishment). Trish wonders what she'd look like with a rose in her mouth, this is a reference to her demon contact combo, Flamenco de la Pasion, with Katsuya (or with Tatsuya in addition in late-game).
BaofuBaofu is a so-called "Tap Buster", an extortionist who uses wiretapping to further his undergound vendetta against the people who have done him wrong, particularly Tatsuzou Sudou and the Tien Tao Len, a Taiwanese Mafia group. He claims he's from Taiwan, but is amazingly fluent in Japanese. Baofu uses coins as projectile weapons that he flicks at his opponents with a force rivaling that of gunshots. His initial Persona Odysseus imbues him with Wind powers, and later earns Earth magic from his ultimate Persona, Prometheus. Aside from wiretapping, Baofu also runs a rumor discussion website called "The Darkside Of Sumaru City", where he sorts through various urban legends and whatnot to find information that might be relevant to him. He joins Maya's party at Parabellum following a meet-up arranged online, and tests the effectiveness of the Kotodama, where rumors can come true when spread around town. Because of his shady personality and propositions, the party finds it hard to trust him, especially Katsuya Suou. Baofu leads the party to Mt. Katatsumuri (Mifune in the NA version) where the Morimoto Sanitarium is located, telling them outwardly that this is where the insane son of Tatsuzou Sudou (Tatsuya Sudou, the fake Joker) is being kept, but is aware that the Taiwanese Mafia will be there as well, with orders to rub out Sudou's son. Following the event in the Abandoned Factory in Konan where Baofu was able to defeat Yung Pao, It is revealed through Katsuya's background research that Baofu's true identity was that of Kaoru Saga (kanji: 嵯峨 薫), a Japanese public prosecutor. Along with his assistant Miki Asai, they were both victims of a Taiwanese Mafia hit, tagged for their running investigation on the Tien Tao Len. Kaoru survives, awakening to Odysseus in the process, but Miki does not. Kaoru has since lived with regret in his heart, and sets out to exact revenge at the people responsible for her death, going from lawful means to illegal ones. In EP, When certain conditions are met in the game, Kei can develop a special contact with Baofu called "Song Of A Baseball Fan" where he gets into a quarrel with the former over which baseball team is the greatest after listening to a possibly pre-recorded baseball commentary from a radio broadcast. This parallels the typical debates in real-life Japanese baseball fandom.Nyarlathotep
Another creation of "weird fiction" author H.P. Lovecraft, this creature is also known as "the Crawling Chaos," (Interesting, since he is a Dark-LAW demon in SMT). According to "The Cthulhu Lexicon" Nyarlathotep is the messenger of the Outer Gods but also their manifestation of consciousness. Primarily the representative of Azathoth, the "blind, idiot god," Nyarlathotep has also been known to take human form - that of "the black man," resembling a member of one of the old native tribes in ancient Egypt. Wherever Nyarlathotep goes, madness and nightmares are said to follow. He once influenced Takahisa Kandori (Guido Sardenia in U.S) from the first Persona by becoming his Persona and when Takahisa was defeated for the first time, he transforms it into an evolved monster, and left him as he was eventually defeated for good.
Nyarlathotep corrupts the memories of Jun Kurosu, leading him to believe that Tatsuya Suou and the rest of the Masquerade had killed "Big Sis", Maya Amano. With this, Jun gave in to Nyarlathotep and became the Joker, creating a corrupted adult version of the Masquerade with the intent to capture Ideal Energy in order to raise Xibalba, Nyarlathotep's spaceship, and create a new, superior human race.
Nyarlathotep took the form of Jun's ideal father. His real father died long ago, but because Nyarlathotep fulfills all that he desired in a father, Jun is blinded to the truth until he faces it on Xibalba itself.
Nyarlathotep also took the form of Hitler and even his entire Last Battalion, representing the evil that humans can commit en masse.
In the end, Tatsuya and company face Nyarlathotep's final form, the Great Fathers, which is an eerie chimerization of the fathers of the protagonists. This is based on the importance Freud placed on the father figure and its involvement in the human psyche. While they win the battle, they lose the war-Nyarlathotep succeeds in killing Maya, and with her sacrifice he gains the power to destroy the world, which he does not hesitate to use.
Nyarlathotep takes advantage of Tatsuya Suou's sin of becoming the paradox of the recreated world. He starts by returning the memories of the key figures that led to the other side's destruction, as well as bringing his former host, Takahisa Kandori, back to life using the power of the Kotodama. The New World Order is established as a result, a parallel to the other side's Last Battalion, with the minor difference being that the army is comprised of real people who were blinded by the NWO's twisted ideals. By gathering Kegare, which was the direct opposite of Ideal Energy, the Ameno Torifune emerges from underneath Sumaru City.
Nyarlathotep also assists the opposing group led by Maya, taking the form of the Time Castle's count where he sells Spell Cards and registers rare ones to later sell. He hints about "playing with rumors" as he does not offer the aforementioned service until the appropriate ones are spread. Back on the other side, Nyarlathotep also uses this form and gives a flower to Maki Sonomura who passes it on to Jun.
In the end, Maya's party faces Nyarlathotep in Monado Mandala, where he plays mind games with the party, bringing out their dark sides to provoke them and give himself enough power to destroy the world once more if Tatsuya's old comrades Eikichi, Lisa, and Jun regain their memories from the other side. Upon successfully rescuing them (whether or not they start to remember the past), the party engages Nyarlathotep in battle, first in the guise of Moon Howler, and finally his true form, Crawling Chaos. Upon winning, Tatsuya finally accepts the fact that the world would be better off if he forgets, having barely averted repeating the tragic events from before. After saying goodbye to Maya, his memories from the other side fade away, leaving behind the body and memories of Tatsuya from this side. As a result, Sumaru City is saved, and everyone returns to their normal lives.
However, Nyarlathotep cannot truly die. As long as there is darkness in the soul of man, he will eventually return to once again unleash chaos.
Persona 3 Characters Main CharacterThe Silent Protagonist of Persona 3, he spends much of his time listening to music and staying distant. He has moved around alot ever since his parents died in a car accident. He can wield multiple weapons but usually defaults to one handed sword. He has an affinity with the Fool Arcana, which allows him to store multiple personas, as he started out with Orpheus. The manga gave him the name Minato Arisato and describes his personality to be very calm and rather reclusive. Despite his introverted behaviour he has significant leadership skills and can think and plan in the midst of battle. He is transferred into the Gekkoukan High School in his 2nd junior year, and on the way to his new dorm, he witnessed the Dark Hour, but was clueless about anything. When he entered his dorm, he is told by a young boy to sign a contract to the Velvet Room that signified that 'he has only 1 year'. This young boy is Pharos and he would subconsciously chatter with Minato. Minato is later drafted into the SEES group and undergoes a series of activities to defeat Shadows in Tartarus during the Dark Hour. Later, it was revealed that he was the body which seals Death, according to Aigis. This Death later manifested into Pharos, and later Ryoji Mochizuki. Eventually, Minato is given a choice to destroy Death in his human form so they will forget about what will happen and can die happily as the end of the world commences. He chooses not to, and resolves to defeat the being that Death tried to summon: Nyx. He succeeded, but at cost of using the ability that will make him become the seal to Nyx for all eternity. He did so, and after months of clinging to his life to reunite with his friends, he passed away and his soul became the barrier between humanity and Nyx.
Female Main CharacterA new edition to the PSP remake of the game gives you the option to play as a red-haired female character instead of the usual blue-haired male one. She has no standard name, although the fandom has dubbed her either "Minako" based on a feminization of the male's manga-only name "Minato" (although she's notably not really a Gender Flip of Minato, as she's quite different in look, personality, and fighting style), or "Hamuko", based on a pun on the kanji for the term "protagonist" in Japanese. Her plot is mostly the same as the male's. She has different S. Links than he does with mostly different characters, a more feminine version of Orpheus, and uses a naginata as her weapon. Also while the male is mostly stoic and brooding, she's notably more animated, cheerful, and forceful in her responses to questions that he is. However she follows the exact same story with the only differences being S. Links, and going with the females instead of the guys when the group splits up (such as during the beach and the hot springs). Despite this, however, the female character's S. Links fall a bit flat with her due to the romance aspects being removed. Conversely, she has S. Links with the male party members while the male did not, and is able to flesh out Akihiko, Shinjiro and Ken immensely and show hidden depths that were not present in the original due to the male not having much interaction with them at all. In the end, however, she follows the same general story as the male. It's never quite explained just how she came into being. Their were hints of a "butterfly effect" from an outside source that swapped her with the male in an effort to improve things by putting a female with a difference personality in his place but this is never really explained, and like the male, she too sacrifices herself to seal Nyx in the end so nothing really changes. The only major change she can do is prevent Shinjiro's death from gunshot, but due to the drugs he'll not live much longer anyway. Also Ryoji and Pharos are unchanged and still based off human traits they obtained from the male hero which shouldn't be possible if the female was in his place instead. An interesting difference is that the female has more leeway to max her links than the male due to having more links at night, a few links raise easier, and having less restrictions when starting links, but at the same time can also be harder if you don't know what your doing since her Magician and Emperor link closes off for most of the middle of the game, her Moon link is only available for one month, and her Fortune link is only available on specific days of one month and if you screw it up once you can't finish it. On the other hand, the male's links are available year-round, but he only has two at night, requiring extensive juggling to complete them all in the time alloted.
Yukari TakebaYukari is a student of Gekkoukan High, who also happens to be the most popular girl due to her cheery nature and good looks. Yukari, affectionally called 'Yuka-tan', however isn't as secure as everyone thought, in fact she is the most insecure of the team, prone of various mood swings. She is a member of the archery club and uses bow and arrow in battle. Her Persona is Io of the Lovers Arcanum and later evolves into Isis. It deals with Healing and Wind magic. When she discovers that her father was involved with bringing The Fall, Yukari was hit with grief and guilt, feeling that she must atone for her father's wrongdoings. However, it is later revealed that her father was doing the right thing, which gave her something to be proud of to him, and it evolves her Persona. However, the same cannot be said to her mother, who dates various men to deal with the pain of her husband's loss, which causes her to abandon Yukari and pretty much made Yukari hate her. However, with the help of Minato, Yukari was able to make peace with her. In the PSP remake the player has the option for the main character to spend his last moments with Yukari instead of Aigis, where she tearfully tells him that she loves him and she'll stay with him forever. However he dies to become the seal, crushing her. During the events of FES, Yukari showed disdain and jealousy to Aigis, who inherited Minato's Persona Orpheus. At one point, she realized that she could go back in time and save Minato. Out of love, she opts to save him even though she knows it could doom the world by annulling their victory over Nyx, clashing with other SEES members (except Mitsuru, who supported her), eventually defeated by Aigis and Metis, and Yukari later came to terms with the past, and after the defeat of Erebus, promises to live for the future to ease Minato's burden. After the whole ordeal was over, she promised to be Aigis' friend and invites her to be her roommate. If you're playing as the female protagonist Yukari befriends her immediately because she was desperate for a girl her age that could understand her (Mitsuru was too aloof and wrapped up in her own problems). Her and the female protangonist become fast friends and remain that way throughout the game. Yukari is still the Lovers S link for the female, but the female is able to start the link immediately and with no stat requirements (the male needs to wait until summer after they get to know each other a bit and requires maximum charm to get Yukari's attention) because Yukari is more welcoming to her because she's another girl. Her link is basically the same as the males minus the romance factor and adding a few friendship scenes and as a result seems a bit flat. However the female protangonist can choose to hang out with Yukari instead of a lover during several of the special scenes such as the Summer Festival and Christmas although there is no Les Yay involved (the game is making up for lack of male love interests)
Junpei IoriJunpei is the class clown of Gekkoukan High and Minato's best friend. He likes the idea of playing hero, but it turns out to be a means to hide his own insecurity, and in turn is rather jealous with Minato for being picked as the leader. Yukari sometimes referred him as "Stupei", in reference of his occasional idiot moments. His Persona awakening was discovered by Akihiko during the Dark Hour and he soon got himself drafted into SEES. He fights using a two handed sword, but wields them like a baseball bat. His Persona is Hermes of the Magician Arcanum and later evolves into Trismegistus. It mostly deals with Physical attacks, Buff and Fire Magics. Junpei later encounters Chidori of Strega and fell in love with her. His actions causes her to slowly open herself up to him, and eventually sacrificed her life to save him, betraying the Strega. This strengthens Junpei's resolve and evolves his Persona. In FES, it is possible that Junpei discovers that Chidori is successfully revived in good hands. She lost her memory, but is more than determined to find the man of her dreams, causing Junpei to cry in joy. Junpei is the female main character's Magician S.Link, replacing Kenji (who appears during the female's Chariot link instead.) In it he basically just hangs out with her, and is grateful that a girl is paying attention to and taking him seriously as she teaches him the finer points about women; later, she helps along his relationship with Chidori. Because of that relationship, Junpei is not a romantic interest for the female protagonist, unlike the other male members of SEES. A romantic scene exists in the data but was dummied out before the game was released.
Akihiko SanadaEnrolling in the third year in Gekkoukan High, Akihiko is the Captain of the school's boxing team, which he utilizes a lot in battle. He attracts many ladies, but mostly ignores them. It is revealed that he has been a member of the SEES, one of the three founding members. His Persona is Polydeuces of the Emperor Arcanum and it later evolves into Caesar. It deals with Lightning and Debuff spells. Akihiko is an orphan, and due to a fire accident, lost his sister Miki. Cursing at his weakness and inability to save his sister, Akihiko resolved to become strong to be able to protect his dear ones and do the right thing. However, he couldn't shake off his fear of dying and unable to protect anymore. That is, until the death of his friend Shinjiro Aragaki, who sacrificed his life for someone who tried to kill him (Ken Amada) all without fear. Reminscing their old times together after his funeral, Akihiko was inspired with Shinjiro's bravery and that evolved his Persona. Thanks to that event, he becomes fearless of death. During the events of FES, Akihiko was one of the members who understood Minato's decision and sacrifice his life and chose to respect the decision. In the female protagonist's story, Akihiko is her Star S.Link replacing Mamoru (who never appears). She'll need level 4 Charm in order to stand out in his eyes from all his numerous dull fangirls that annoy him In it, she spends time with him and proves to be someone that understands and likes him for who he really is as opposed to all his fangirls who only like his image. He also tells her about his past and about his sister, Miki, and later on she comes to help him come to terms with what happens to Shinjiro. Akihiko is much more fleshed out here as opposed to the male's story where he never really interacts with him much. The female protagonist can romance Akihiko if the player chooses. During the New Game Plus, if she has a romantic relationship with Akihiko, on the final day he'll meet her on the roof and stay with her in her last moments before becoming the seal for Nyx, telling her that he's glad he could see her again and that from now on they'll be fine.
Mitsuru KirijouMitsuru is a 3rd year student of the Gekkoukan High, the school's Student Council President's and the daughter of the head of the influential Kirijou group, which built the school, enabling her to cow down any teachers who is misconducting themselves. She is the first member of SEES and was trained to summon her Persona. A natural born leader, she is also feared by her peers, anyone who gets on her wrong side will be executed by being frozen alive as if being put on the very final circle of Hell itself, it was so mind-scarring that people tend to forget that it ever happened. She first serves as Mission Control, but takes herself to the battlefield once Fuuka Yamagishi joins SEES. She wields a rapier and fights gracefully (or in her words: C'est Magnifique). Her Persona is Penthesilea of the Empress Arcanum and it later evolves into Artemisia, mostly dabbling in heavy spell fighting with Ice and some healing spells. The Kirijou family was responsible in bringing forth the Shadow, thus Mitsuru thought that it fell onto her shoulders to atone for that and uphold the honor of the family. However, all broke down when her father Takeharu was murdered right in front of her, by the chairman Shuji Ikutsuki himself (revealed to be a madman all along). With her will to uphold her family honor destroyed with it, Mitsuru fell into a depression which carried over into the School trip. Yukari, however, manages to set her straight, and Mitsuru rediscovered her resolve to lead the Kirijou group, evolving her Persona. She is also betrothed with another man who doesn't seem to care to her. At first she thought that marrying him would do good for the Kirijou group. However, Minato develops a relationship with her and made her realize it won't be so good for the long run, causing her to drive him off. In the PSP remake the player can choose to have Minato spend his last moments with Mitsuru instead of Aigis where she in her own roundabout way admits that she loves him and Minato is the most important person to her. During the events of FES, Mitsuru is implied (although not really stated) to have fallen for the Minato too, thus she sides with Yukari in an attempt to save him. Then again, she states that her reason was because she promised that, when Yukari would be in need, she'd support her no matter what. Mitsuru is also the female protagonist's Empress link. Unlike Yukari and Fuka who can start their links earlier and without the stats the male requires, because they are more welcoming to another female, Mitsuru still requires Maximum academics and good exam scores to start her link. It's basically like the males minus the romance factors.
Fuuka YamagishiA small, timid girl that was often bullied and put under pressure by her strict parents. She is supposedly sickly, but it was actually a cover up by her teacher and parents when she went missing for ten days. She disappeared when she was locked in the gymnasium and became trapped in Tartarus when the school transformed from the Dark Hour. She does not actively participate in combat. Instead, Fuuka's persona, Lucia of the Priestess Arcana encases Fuuka in an indestructible globe and gives her the power to "see" the weaknesses and strengths of enemies. Thanks to her abilities surpassing Mitsuru's, she saves Natsuki (one of the girls who bullied her, but came to look for her out of concern) and joins SEES. She develops from a shy, pessimistic girl to a compassionate woman that deeply cares for her friends. A little after the incident on October 4th, Fuuka is still feeling uneasy about it, feeling her negligence led to it. Natsuki, who is now her close friend, then reveals she is transferring, and Fuuka is shocked. However, after talking to her, Fuuka understands how her concern comes from her desires to say close with her friends, and Lucia gives rise to Juno. In her Social Link, Fuuka tries to become more feminine by learning how to cook, and having you (the protagonist) taste them. She comes to accept where her true passion lies in, as a skilled hacker with a love for technology, and a valuable asset to SEES.
Aigis
Ken Amada
Koromaru
Shinjiro AragakiA former member of SEES, he left the group several years before, following a tragic accident. Despite looking like a delinquent, he has his soft side. After Ken Amada rejoins the group, Akihiko talks Shinjiro back into SEES. The two grew up in the same orphanage. Shinjiro's Persona is the physically-oriented Castor of the Hierophant Arcana. Several years before the game, Shinjiro lost control of his Persona during an Operation and accidentally killed a woman. His guilt drove him out of SEES, and he began to take Persona-suppressing drugs, provided to him by Strega. The woman, it so happens, was Ken Amada's mother. During one Full Moon operation, Ken and Shinjiro met at the spot where Ken's mother died. There, Ken attempted to get his revenge, with Shinjiro's full support. However, because Shinjiro was so willing to die, Ken couldn't bring himself to do it - he had expected Shinjiro to fight back. Strega chose that moment to interfere, and when Takaya attempted to kill Ken, Shinjiro took the bullet, dying to protect the boy whose life he shattered. In the female's story Shinjiro is her Moon S.Link, replacing Nozomi. This link is only available for the month of September and therefore is available almost every day and raises very quickly. In it, she spends time with Shinjiro and gets him to reveal his inner caring and sensitive sides to her. The male, on the other hand, never really interacts much with Shinjiro. He prods her about concerns over her health, assists Fuuka with her cooking, and makes a grand dinner for the rest of the dorm at one point. He also tells her about his past with Akihiko and his sister. Towards the end of the link, the female can retrieve a pocket watch he'd lost from the police station and return it to him. If so, the watch will prevent fatal damage from Takaya's shot and Shinjiro will survive, although he'll spend the rest of the game comatose in the hospital. He won't rejoin the party. After maxing his link the female can start a romantic relationship with him by talking to him again and state that she's fallen in love with him. Although he'll repeatedly try to dissuade her by asking if she's serious and that it's a bad idea (the player will need to refuse his attempts to get her to leave him alone about 8 times) he'll eventually take her to his room and state that he too has fallen for her, but that them getting together will be a mistake and gives her one final chance to leave. When she does not, he tells her he won't let her go. During the New Game Plus, after this Shinjiro will break out of the hospital on the game's final day and meet the protagonist on the roof of the school as she's fading away from sealing Nyx. He tells her that he saw everything while she was unconsious and that he's proud of her, is glad that she loved him, and he's grateful to have met her. Whether or not his survival is canon or not is not currently known.
Metis
Shuji IkutskiReferred to as "the Chairman", Shuji is the head of SEES. He worked with Mitsuru and Yukari's fathers on the project ten years ago, and was one of the designers of Aigis. Despite not having a Persona, he remains conscious during the Dark Hour. Unfortunately, he's also a complete lunatic. During the experiments ten years ago, Shuji came across a prophecy referring to a Prince who would bring about the Fall. He became convinced that he was the Prince, and rigged the experiments so that they would release the twelve Full Moon Shadows. He also altered Yukari's father's last message, so that it would guide SEES to destroy the twelve Shadows (which would summon Nyx) instead of warning them not to, as it originally said. When the final Full Moon Shadow, the Hanged Man, was destroyed, Shuji reprogrammed Aigis to render the rest of SEES unconscious, then brought them to Gekkoukan High's observatory. Tying them to crosses, he ordered Aigis to sacrifice them to Nyx. However, Aigis's affection for the group compromised her programming, leaving her unable to do so. Before Shuji could shoot the group himself, Mitsuru's father interrupted him. The two men shot each other, suffering mutual fatal wounds. Shuji's last act was to laugh in insanity before falling from the observatory roof. Despite the implications, we're later told that yes, they did find the body.
Ryoji MochizukiA New Transfer Student who first makes his appearance in November. He is a flirty Bishonen who asks out any girl he meets, and quickly befriends the members of SEES. In reality, he is the Appriser of Nyx, doomed to bring about The Fall. He was sealed within the protagonist for the past ten years, and manifested as Pharos in earlier parts of the game. As Ryoji, however, he is ignorant of his true nature until the beginning of December—at which point he suffers from Amnesiac Dissonance, having become fond of humanity and life in general. In the PSP remake with the female's story, Ryoji is oddly still based on the male main character despite having gotten his human form from her. Ryoji is her version of the Fortune S.Link and is able to get to know her better. Unlike other Links, his is only available on specific days during the month of November and will always rank up if you see him, so it requires no points; however, if you miss a single day, you cannot complete the link. In it he bonds with her and ponders his strange familiar connection to her, hinting at his Tomato In The Mirror plot. If you choose to pursue a romantic relationship with him, he'll find that she's the only girl he's truly ever loved. After the reveal (if you've completed the link to that point) on New Years Eve, the link will complete and Ryoji will declare his love for her and state that he'd give anything to be with her forever, except of course that he must fufill his duty as Nyx's herald. He leaves with a ring, proof of his existance as a human and his love for her.
StregaA group of Persona-users opposing SEES who host an online assassination service. Consisting of Takaya, a revolver-wielding Nietzsche Wannabe, Psycho Supporter Jin and Dark Magical Girl Chidori, the group are the survivors of experiments performed by the Kirijo Group and must take life-shortening drugs in order to control their powers. While not the main antagonists, they do their part to cause the heroes all sorts of trouble since they see their efforts to stop the Dark Hour as wasting their "gifts". Chidori later on becomes Junpei's romantic interest, even sacrificing herself for him. Later on, with the revelation of The Fall, Takaya proclaims himself a Dark Messiah of an Internet Cult set up by Jin in order to embrace Nyx since his only dream is for the world to die. During the team's final climb of the tower, Jin attempts to stop them and fails, blowing himself up with a grenade after they leave him to die. Takaya fares no better, but at least gets to see Nyx descend upon the world. While his exact fate isn't made clear, it's assumed that if he didn't die back at Tartarus, Takaya's probably dead by the time of Persona 4.

Taro NamatameA secretary in the local city council, Namatame's affair with a news reporter, Mayumi Yamano, is a hot topic amongst the people of Inaba upon the Protagonist's arrival to the city. Namatame was one of the three people granted the power to enter the TV by Izanami, representing Despair in her experiment. After witnessing the deaths of Mayumi and Saki on the Midnight Channel, Namatame concludes that anyone who appears on the station will die and makes it his life's mission to "save" them by throwing them into the TV. Unfortunately, he fails to recognize that the TV world is potentially lethal on its own. After kidnapping Yukiko, Kanji, Rise, Naoto, and Nanako, he eventually becomes the investigation team's chief murder suspect. He is confronted and defeated inside a manifestation of Heaven created by his views of himself as a messianic figure. He also plays a pivotal role in determing the outcome of the case; should the player take the easy way out and blame him for all of the murders, they will be "rewarded" with the game's Bad Ending. If he is spared and the Protagonist manages to convince the rest of the team that something still seems off about the case, the game will move the player closer to the Normal and True Endings. In this case, Namatame, still recovering from his experience in the TV, will aid the investigation team by offering his perspective on the game's events thus far.
Tohru AdachiA bumbling dectective, he was transfered to Inaba due to an unknown incident (presumably one of his many screw-ups.) One of the main authorities on the murder cases along with Dojima, he has a habit of divulging critical information to the Investigation Team, making him a useful ally. It turns out that not only is this all just an act, but he's the one behind the murders. After causing the first two murders, he manipulated Namatame into carrying on in his stead. Bored with the tiny town of Inaba, he viewed the murders as his own personal form of entertainment. While he claims to be much more mature then the Investigation Team, it's clear that the whole thing is him throwing a tantrum over the crap he's had to deal with. After he's exposed, he is chased into the TV World, (where he reveals Persona powers not unlike Souji's) and possessed by Ameno-Sagiri. Afterwards, he is arrested and sent to jail for his crimes. Despite this, he mails a letter to the Investigation Team, claiming he'll follow society's rules and giving them a clue to the Truth of the Midnight Channel. While he is the true mastermind behind the murders, he was secretly manipulated by Izanami, who wanted to determine what humanity truly wanted based on his, Souji's, and Namatame's actions. Adachi represents Emptiness in Izanami's experiment. Because his actions are the most prolific, he unintentionally sentences humanity to an Assimilation Plot, though his attitude before your battle with him suggests that he would approve of Izanami's course of action.)
Digital Devil Saga Characters SerphThe silent protagonist of the game, Serph is the leader of the smallest tribe in the Junkyard, the Embryon. Thanks to his leadership skills and brilliant tribe members, the Embryon are quickly climbing the ranks of the Junkyard tribes despite its small size. Serph first discovered the ramifications of his Atma powers during the infiltration of the Vanguard Base, and while he takes no joy in devouring his enemies, he also realises it is necessary in order to survive. Even with his emotions awakened Serph is able to keep a cool and clear head, but he becomes increasingly more protective of his team mates and innocent soldiers. Since the discovery of Sera, Serph became increasingly more protective of her, which led to them becoming quite close. This often leads to confrontation between him and his comrade Heat who often appears jealous of their friendship. After defeating the other tribes and climbing to the top of the Karma Temple, Serph and his comrades would ultimately witness the total deletion of the Junkyard and all their allies due to the destruction of the master program that held it all together. Serph, Sera and the others narrowly escaped the same fate by entering a mysterious light that was believed to lead to Nirvana.HeatHeat is quite possibly the Embryon's strongest fighter physically, but he does not always make the best choices logically. Even before Heat's emotions became strong, he was more than ready to accept his Atma powers. He takes great pleasure in killing and devouring his enemies, and fails to see how characters like Argilla would have such a hard time with it. From the moment Heat lays his eyes on Sera, he feels a deep affinity toward her, and it would ultimately be his desire to discover who she is that would awaken his emotions. Despite Heat's cold and often selfish behaviour, he will willingly put himself in any sort of danger to save or protect Sera no matter what the cost to himself. After defeating the other tribes and climbing to the top of the Karma Temple, Heat and his comrades would ultimately witness the total deletion of the Junkyard and all their allies due to the destruction of the master program that held it all together. Heat and the others narrowly escaped the same fate by entering a mysterious light that was believed to lead to Nirvana. Heat found himself in a barren wasteland covered in ruins and statues of the dead where he was discoved by Madame Cuvier, who explained to Heat the purpose of the Junkyard and who he really was. Heat was an AI secretly created by Sera to represent Heat O'Brian, a colleague of Serph Sheffield who in Sera's eyes, always appeared angry, which was reflected in his AI model. To Sera, Heat was her evil prince who secretly loved her and would compete with the AI of Serph for her attention. When Sera was alone, she would play with Heat and the other A Is she had created on the beaches and in the parks of her own virtual paradise. Not long after the tragic day that Sera discovered the aweful truth about Serph Sheffield and the Black Sun was created, Sera was forced to delete her paradise to make way for the Junkyard. However she could not bare to delete Heat, so erased his memories and placed him within the Junkyard project. After being explained the horrible things that Serph Sheffield had done and how Heat O'Brian had died, Heat was deeply angered. He agreed to assist Madame Cuvier in her plans to create Nirvana at the expence of the weak as long as he could continue to protect Sera. He killed the spy working for Jenna Angel and then went up against Serph and his former comrades when they invaded the Karma Society Tower, but was unable to overcome Serph in a true battle. Forced to retreat from his last battle, Heat again confronted Serph after he rescued Sera at the EGG Installation. This time he disregarded the Madame's orders to wait and charged Serph, running him through. Serph grabbed Heat and pulled him back into the EGG, where they both seemed to fall to their death. Seeing this was enough to trigger Sera's memories of five years ago, which started a chain reaction that caused God to start absorbing all data from the planet. By the time Sera and the remaining Embryon return to the EGG Installation, Heat has absorbed Serph's powers, the EGG, and much of the corrupted data flowing throughout the building, becoming the huge and powerful Vritra. Overpowered by the anger burning within him, Heat is unable to express his true feelings to Sera, but realises that she will die unless returned to the fluid of the EGG that was now inside him. Heat tells Sera that he plans to devour her, and attacks. Despite Heat seeming to hate Sera, he encourages her and his former comrades to fight with all they have. Heat seems to just be getting his second wind when Serph cuts himself free from within his stomach, mortally wounding him. Heat staggers to his feet and heads for the control room of the EGG, where Heat O'Brian died five years ago. He and Serph are finally able to make peace just before he breathes his last. Heat would be seen again as solar data on the Sun, where depending on choices made throughout DDS1 and DDS2 he may join you in place of Roland in their quest to reach God and save what is left of humanity. The mission is ultimately successful, and Heat returns to the flow of solar data. He is seen again reincarnated on the now flourishing Earth alongside Serph, Sera, Cielo, Gale, Argilla and Angel. He and the others are under the care of the now grown up Fred, and with no memories of his past life, can finally live in peace with his friends.ArgillaAs the best sniper in the whole of Embryon, Argilla is often with Serph on the most high priority missions. When she first discovers the truth behind her Atma powers, she is hesitant and remorseful about the idea of killing and devouring the flesh of rival tribe members, and refuses to feed. By the end of the infiltration mission on the Vanguard Base, Argilla is near starvation and close to losing control of her powers, but luckily Sera is able to help her regain control. After this incident, Argilla becomes angry toward the powers that were forced on her and vows to be rid of them. But to do that, she accepts that she will need to feed to prevent her from turning on her own allies. Through the many fights to come, Argilla shows the most compassion and caring toward not only her own comrades, but the soldiers of the other tribes as well. The more Argilla fights and devours, the more she wishes to reach Nirvana and be rid of her horrific powers. After defeating the other tribes and climbing to the top of the Karma Temple, Argilla and her comrades would ultimately witness the total deletion of the Junkyard and all their allies due to the destruction of the master program that held it all together. Argilla and the others narrowly escaped the same fate by entering a mysterious light that was believed to lead to Nirvana. Argilla found herself in a barren wasteland covered in ruins and statues of the dead, this was not the promised land had she had wished for. She soon witnessed a group of soldiers attacking a young boy and instinctively went to his aid. The young boy's name was Fred, and after locating both Serph and Gale, they started to make plans for rescuing Sera. After meeting with the Lokapala's leader Roland, Argilla discovered the truth about herself and the Junkyard. She was an AI secretly created by Sera to represent the nurse Argilla that had taken care of Sera since her birth, and that she believed was one of her best friends. The AI Argilla represented what Sera had seen in her nurse. She was kind, loving and cared deeply for others. When Sera was alone, she would play with Argilla and the other A Is she had created on the beaches and in the parks of her own virtual paradise. Not long after the tragic day that Sera discovered the aweful truth about Serph Sheffield and the Black Sun was created, Sera was forced to delete her paradise to make way for the Junkyard. However she could not bare to delete Argilla, so erased her memories and placed her within the Junkyard project. Argilla was once again a major help to her comrades in their battles against the Karma Society, but she would be destined to meet her end at the hands of the great and powerful Meganada. After Roland turned back to keep Meganada at bay as the Embryon attempted to shut down the Power Plant, they received a transmission from him saying Meganada was unstoppable, and he was heading for the core of the Power Plant to destroy it. Argilla decided to head back and help Roland fight Meganada, and ensure the success of his mission while the others evacuated. The beast proved much more than Argilla could handle, but thanks to her sacrifice Roland was able to hit the switch and destroy the power plant, taking himself, Argilla, and Meganada with it. Argilla would be seen again as solar data on the Sun, where she joins the newly formed Seraph and her comrades in their quest to reach God and save what is left of humanity. The mission is ultimately successful, and Argilla returns to the flow of solar data. She is seen again reincarnated on the now flourishing Earth alongside Serph, Sera, Cielo, Gale, Heat and Angel. She and the others are under the care of the now grown up Fred, and with no memories of her past life, she can grow up in the Nirvana she always dreamed of.
GaleGale is the highly intellectual and logical tactical advisor for the Embryon. Without his astounding expertise, it is likely that the tribe may have never become as formidable as it is today. When the tribe members receive their Atma powers, Gale soon finds himself out of control from the hunger and attacks his comrade Cielo while Serph is away. It is only Sera's unique ability to calm his demonic form that saves him from either killing Cielo or being killed by Heat. Gale finds it very difficult to comprehend the illogical emotions displayed by his comrades once they receive their powers, but does find himself coming up with less contemporary plans in order to defeat the rival tribes. He is also the only person out of himself, Serph, Heat, Argilla and Cielo to have no previous memories of Sera or the places they visit. Despite having visions of a mysterious woman with long black hair, Gale fights his emotional side for longer than most other residence within the Junkyard. It would ultimately be his meeting with the honourable Lupa of the Wolves that would help him understand the many inconsistencies within the Junkyard and Lupa's death that would free his emotions and lead him to cursing his Atma powers. After defeating the other tribes and climbing to the top of the Karma Temple, Gale and his comrades would ultimately witness the total deletion of the Junkyard and all their allies due to the destruction of the master program that held it all together. Despite Angel being the enemy, Gale felt that he could not allow her to die, so he helped her escape into the mysterious light that was believed to lead to Nirvana. Gale found himself in a barren wasteland covered in ruins and statues of the dead where he met up with a boy who was being attacked by soldiers in white. Upon seeing Gale, the soldiers turned on him and he was forced to kill them. Soon after that he was able to meet up with Serph and Argilla, and he formulated a plan to find Sera, who he believed was the answer to all the Embryon's questions. After meeting with the Lokapala's leader Roland, Gale discovered the truth about himself and the Junkyard. He was a combat AI created by Sera for the first stage of the Asura Project, however this still did not explain his memories of Angel that were so clear in his mind. The truth of the matter was that Gale was created from the solar data of a man named David, a scientist who was the lover of Jenna Angel before his death caused by the Cuvier Syndrome. Gale continued to travel with his comrades as advisor and tactician up until they reached the airport, where he requested that he be left behind to deal with Jenna. Gale reminded Jenna of the promise she made to David all those many years ago and how she had neglected his wishes to help mankind. Jenna became distraught and irrational when she realized who Gale was, and in her grief, refusing to accept the truth stabbed him through his stomach. Gale took Jenna in his arms and ran her through, and the two died in each other's arms. Gale would be seen again as solar data on the Sun, where he joins the newly formed Seraph and his comrades in their quest to reach God and save what is left of humanity. The mission is ultimately successful, and Gale returns to the flow of solar data. He is seen again reincarnated on the now flourishing Earth alongside Serph, Sera, Cielo, Argilla, Heat and Angel. He and the others are under the care of the now grown up Fred, and with no memories of his past life, he can grow up happily together with Angel and his friends.

GoutoGouto is a mysterious talking cat who has been the partner of every Raidou Kuzunoha since the second. Not much is known about Gouto, other than the fact he's not of this world and his real form is not that of a cat, although he does have a shameful secret obsession with a certain cat toy. Now assigned to the fourteenth Raidou Kuzunoha, Gouto's job is to offer his support and advice as he deals with the supernatural world of demons, and to ensure Raidou keeps to to his duties as the newest Raidou Kuzunoha. Despite Gouto's sarcasm, he believes that this Raidou Kuzunoha, may be the best he has ever had the honour to guide. When the Soulless God Oumagatsu was awakened, Gouto helped to come up with the plan to destroy the Tai-itsu, and to ensure its success joined a demon in a rocket bound for the satellite. When the Tai-itsu was destroyed, so too was the earthly body of Gouto. However, despite this drawback, Gouto continued to guide Raido as a formless voice until the end of his mission. Just before the destruction of his body, Gouto revealed that his true form was that of the first Raidou Kuzunoha, and that he has watched every summoner to bear his name since. By the end of the game, Gouto is seen as a raven as he follows Raidou on his next mission. In the sequel, Gouto has returned to his cat form. In an optional conversation in the sequel, Gouto reveals that he committed an unspecified crime during his role as Raidou Kuzunoha; as punishment, he is forced to mentor and watch over all his successors until they die.

As such, he agreed with the Herald of Yatagarasu to take Raidou on as a part time junior detective while he worked secretly as the new Raidou Kuzunoha. The Narumi Detective Agency only takes on the most unusual cases, where the impossible is all that's left, although generally he isn't the type to get his hands dirty, and would rather pass on all the leg work to Raidou. While on the surface he may appear lazy, Narumi cares a lot about the people and won't stand idly by while the citizens suffer. Should Raidou ever be in deep trouble, Narumi will try to help, even if it's far beyond his abilities. Shouhei returns as the head of the detective agency once again in Raidou Kuzunoha Vs King Abaddon. Now claiming to be a "Modern Man", Shouhei has taken to blending his own coffee and eating nothing but toast for lunch. While preparing some toast, he was attacked by some kind of insect, which Gouto attempted to stop. While Gouto prevented the insect's attack, he also ruined Shouhei's pants.

She treats her classmates and servants as equals despite being raised as a member of the upper crust, and is loved by them in return. However, Kaya has a dark family secret hanging over her head, and discoved that she was doomed to be possessed by a demon on her sixteenth birthday. Kaya spent much of her time locked in a secret basement beneath the Daidouji Residence as she approached her sixteen birthday, but with the help of her uncle, Kiyoshi, she escaped only to meet with Munakata's forces. Desperate, she contacted the Narumi Detective Agency and requested to meet them in private. Narumi and Raidou went to meet with Kaya, only to witness her taken by mysterious masked soldiers dressed in red. Much later Raidou was able to rescue Kaya, who took up temporary work at the Narumi Detective Agency afraid to return home. Finally, after Raidou destroyed the Soulless God Oumagatsu, he is able to pursue Kaya into the Akarana Corridors of time where he discovers that the presence within Kaya is a Raidou Kuzunoha of the future. After a long battle, and even after the entity possesses the Soulless God Yasomagatsu, Raidou is able to defeat it. Expelling the entity from both the ship and Kaya, Raidou cast it into the abyss of time, and returned Kaya safely to her family.RasputinIn Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha, Rasputin played the role of a major character. He was a Dark Summoner (a Devil Summoner who turned his back on the teachings for personal gain) who attacked Raidou Kuzunoha several times to prevent him getting too close to the truth about the Soulless Army Project. He is believed to be the real Rasputin (although he is reported to be dead by then) until it is revealed that he is in fact a mechanical man working for Munakata as collateral to keep the project a secret until it is fully underway. Later, after his contract with Munakata is up, he unexpectedly turns to Raidou with information on Munakata's location and goal. He then seemingly watches from the sideline with neutral feelings on the outcome. It is revealed he is also a time traveller from the future, apparently sent to maintain the timeline, but ignored his mission to pursue his own goals. By the end of the game it is implied Rasputin remains in Raidou's time to become more 'human'. He returns in the sequal to help Raidou to defeat the Appollyon
