Priscilla Camp

    Priscilla Barielle

Priscilla Barielle

Voiced by: Yukari Tamura (Japanese), Faye Mata (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/priscilla_barielle_anime.png

One of the participants in the Royal Selection, who thinks "the world is made in her favor." Her arrogance is a result of her very fortunate life, as events that happen to her always seem to work out for the better, leading to her self-centered personality.

  • Antiquated Linguistics: She speaks a regal and antiquated form of Japanese, including the use of the archaic feminine pronoun "warawa" for herself.
  • Battle Trophy: Her folding fan used to belong to her elder sister Lamia Vollachia, whom mutually regarded Priscilla/Prisha as her Arch-Enemy amongst their various siblings. After cooperating secretly with Vincent to catch Lamia off-guard using a long-con, Prisha confronted her alone and eventually triumphed over her in battle, taking the fan afterwards as a mark of her success over her "stronger" sibling.
  • Born Lucky: A lot of Priscilla's property and wealth comes from being extremely lucky.
  • Death Faked for You: Vincent and Arakiya made an agreement to help fake Priscilla/Prisha's death and thus side-step the necessity of having to kill her during the Vollachia Empire's Royal Selection. To accomplish this, Arakiya drank a highly poisonous wine in front of Prisha, who unwilling to watch Arakiya die, sucked the poison out of her through her lips, apparently succumbing to it afterwards just as planned.
  • Deliberately Distressed Damsel: When Subaru first meets her, Priscilla is being harassed by Ton, Chin and Kan. However, Priscilla was never in danger as she's powerful enough to defend herself from some muggers and she simply let herself be dragged to the alley because she thought it could amuse her.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When Subaru grovels for her help, she angrily beats him and swears that she will destroy him and anyone he associates with for his shamelessness.
  • Elemental Weapon: She's capable of manifesting a crimson blade called the "Light Sword Vollachia" that shines like the sun. It is capable controlling heat, creating large walls of fire and among other things. It only burns/slices whoever she wants it to. However, as it consumes a huge amount of mana, Priscilla has to dematerialize it back into light when she is not using it.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Her belief, as stated to Subaru, is that the world is designed to operate in the way that works out best for her. This is after Subaru and Rom rescue her from a group of bandits. Then again the fact that they did show up more or less proves her right.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She mockingly offers her aid to Subaru if he grovels and licks her foot. When he actually motions to do so, she kicks him, disgusted at his lack of pride.
  • Flaming Sword: Her main weapon is a sword that generates flames of incredible bone melting heat.
  • Girly Bruiser: Despite her appearance and personality, Priscilla is actually strong enough to lift and hurl an average-sized man with ease. This is thanks to her blessing, "The Sun," which increases her physical abilities during the day.
  • High-Class Fan: She often carries a crimson handheld folding fan, to illustrate her royal status.
  • I Kiss Your Foot: She tells Subaru to lick her feet. He would've had she not kicked him away.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: She wears a dress with wrapped off-the-shoulder sleeves, revealing her shoulders and some cleavage.
  • It's All About Me: She's convinced that "the world is made in her own favor."
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She isn't exactly a good person, but she has people she cares about, such as Schult or Liliana, and in her battle with Sirius, she shows that she has a pretty heroic side.
  • Lady in Red: Priscilla wears a bolder, red dress appropriate for a Femme Fatale.
  • Magical Accessory: Her three jeweled necklace has an effect that transfers any fatal damage done to her to it, subsequently breaking one of its gems. This means it can only absorb up to three attacks before its protection wears off.
  • Meaningful Rename: Her birth name is Prisca Benedict. She changed it to Priscilla Pendleton after her faked death at the Vollachia Empire's Royal Selection.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: She wears an exquisite black and red dress befitting of an aristocrat like her.
  • The Power of the Sun: She has the Divine Protection of the Sun, which makes her stronger during the day.
  • Prefers Proper Names: She calls Aldebaran by his full given name despite his preference to be called "Al."
  • Pride: She thinks she's best suited for ruling Lugunica, frequently insulting and mocking the other candidates nonchalantly.
  • Privileged Rival: Priscilla is wealthy and powerful due to her amazing luck. Compare Emilia, who only gets by on the kindness of others, has admitted she is flat broke, and is completely rejected by society just because of her half-elf blood.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Subverted. She most frequently wears an opulent black and red aristocratic dress. She's the most unpleasant of the royal candidates, but definitely isn't evil.
  • Red Baron: The Bloodstained Bride & The Sun Princess.
  • Rich Bitch: Due to her wealth and very blessed life, Priscilla always sees others as lesser beings, and herself as untouchable.
  • Serial Spouse: She's barely 20, but Priscilla has gone through more than 8 husbands, all who have died mysteriously.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: She has been spoiled and sheltered to the point that she doesn't know that appas are red since she always receives them peeled.
  • Status Buff: Her affinity for Yang/Light magic focuses on buffs.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: She keeps her fan between her cleavage when not in use. The previous owner Lamia hid it away in the same manner, and since Pricilla/Prisha was too young to use the same method at the time she took it as a trophy off her after killing her, she is clearly enjoying her ability to do so now that age has left her more...developed.

    Aldebaran (Al)

Aldebaran (Al)

Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara, Tomokazu Seki (Death or Kiss) (Japanese), Keith Silverstein (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aldebaran_anime.png

A masked knight who's in charge of keeping Priscilla safe, though he doesn't see himself as a bodyguard. Despite his appearance, Al is a friendly person, at least towards Subaru.

  • An Arm and a Leg: He's missing his left arm.
  • Back from the Dead: Al has an ability that brings him back to life after he is killed. However, it is more limited compared to Subaru's ability in which Al may remember if he was killed, but if he doesn't, his killer will.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: He's completely loyal to Priscilla, but he's aware of her more frivolous qualities and often bemoans how he'll have to deal with the consequences of her more unreasonable orders.
  • Berserk Button: For an unknown reason, he gets extremely angry for Ram being alive. It wasn't because of Ram herself, surprisingly, since he's alright with her. Rather, the fact that Rem is alive as well bothers him.
  • Commonality Connection: He's very kind to Subaru, possibly due to their similarities. Both are supporters of a royal candidate with whom they are close to, both are generally kind, reasonable individuals, with little to no outstanding abilities. Like Subaru, Al is a normal person randomly transported to Lugunica, though he's already been there for 18 years, and has a similar death-triggered ability.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: He display this against Capella in Arc 5. He's decently skilled in it.
  • Face of a Thug: Unlike the knights of the other candidates, Al has an intimidating appearance, only one arm, and an unusual fashion sense. Subaru initially thinks he's a thug, but Al is actually a very mellow guy.
  • Has a Type: Much like Subaru, Al also has a fondness for silver-haired girls.
  • Hero of Another Story: He's been in Lugunica for 18 years and is also acquainted with a Sin Archbishop, and by extension, the Witch Cult and the Witches of Sin, meaning that he has his own share of adventures and mishaps prior to Subaru's arrival. He even mentions off-hard to Arakiya during their meeting in the Gladiator Island that he has an experience with a woman with Silver hair in the past, much like Subaru is attached to Emilia in the present, and cites this as the reason to step into a difficult fight he is greatly outmatched for in order to prevent Arakyia dying.
  • Logical Weakness: Al's power allowing him to undergo a short-scale "Groundhog Day" Loop in combat is very useful for allowing him to survive lethal fights he is vastly under skilled or strong enough to overcome, allowing him to steadily accumulate experience of his opponent's moves and better react to them in subsequent loops, or drive them insane from being trapped in an endless loop of fighting against him whilst he doesn't have to suffer through remembering his horrible deaths. However, should he be the one to retain his memories when looping, then his looping ability will only activate when he dies, not when he suffers a near-lethal or potentially dehabilitating injury, This means that Al can steadily accumulate injuries that he winds up stuck with should he survive the encounter somehow, and it's implied that he lost his arm in some manner as an unavoidable consequence of surviving a highly-dangerous battle.
  • Nice Guy: While he's always at the ready with a clever remark, Al is one of the most easy-going characters in the series.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: His outfit is a strange hodgepodge; he wears a vest with worn-out slacks and sandals, a crudely-fashioned cloak, and topped off with a knight's helmet, covering his head. The helmet at least seems to be a sentimental token of his time on the Gladiator Island, along with helping Al to avoid seeing his own face, which he dislikes the look of, for some reason.
  • Stellar Name: Like other important characters, Al's full name is in reference to a star. In his case, his full name (Aldebaran) makes reference to the star Aldebaran/Alpha Tauri.
  • Trapped in Another World: Like Subaru, Al is also a Japanese citizen who has been transported to another world 18 years ago, but with far less luck, losing his arm and scarring his face early on.

Crusch Camp

    Crusch Karsten

Crusch Karsten

Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi (Japanese), Erika Harlacher (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/crusch_karsten_anime.png

One of the participants in the Royal Selection to become king of Lugunica. A somewhat dense, but hard-working woman, who tends to prefer masculine attire. If she is chosen as the new king of Lugunica, she vows her first act will be to free Lugunica from the dragon's covenant.

  • Action Girl: Crusch is a skilled swordswoman, and powerful user of wind magic.
  • Be Yourself: Advises a crestfallen Subaru to stand tall and be true to himself even if others will oppose him.
  • Bifauxnen: She generally tends to dress as a man, giving her a somewhat androgynous look.
  • Blow You Away: Her blessing, "Wind Indication" allows her to see things that aren't normally visible and read the emotion of others, making it difficult to lie to her. It also grants her the ability to not only use Wind Magic, but to combine it with her swordplay.
  • Frontline General: When in battle, she not only issues commands to her soldiers, she's just as often right in the thick of the action.
  • Girliness Upgrade: A dark example. The headstrong and bold Bifauxnen Crusch becomes soft-spoken and ladylike after Ley Batenkaitos eats her memories.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: She often wields her family's treasured word the Lion Rampart in battle.
  • Honor Before Reason: While she is very pragmatic, she will not take credit for the actions of others, among other things crediting Subaru and Wilhelm as the most important individuals in the slaying of the White Whale.
  • Identity Amnesia: Crusch's memories are eaten by the Archbishop of Gluttony while Subaru and co. are battling against Petelgeuse. As a result, Crusch forgets everything about herself and the people she knows.
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: While she sees Emilia as competition, Crusch insists she does not want their rivalry to turn ugly.
  • Living Lie Detector: Thanks to her Blessing allowing her to read the emotions of others.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The Masculine Girl to Felix's Feminine Boy. Crusch tends to wear masculine clothes and has a very serious, strong-willed personality. On the other hand, Felix is playful and likes wearing cute dresses.
  • Oblivious to Love: In her sidestory, she never notices Fourier's feelings for years until the very last chapter of book where he dies.
  • Ping Pong Naïveté: She's said to be a skilled negotiator and there isn't anyone who can fool her. Yet when Felix jokes that the ceremony to announce the fifth candidate was a drinking party, Crusch completely believes him. Justified as she is a Living Lie Detector and assumes that no one can trick her with words.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: After his courage and cunning helped her and her army defeat the White Whale, Crusch warmly tells Subaru that in that even in the more-than-likely case they become enemies due to politics, she will always love and respect him as a friend. To that Subaru muses that had he not loved Emilia and Rem already, he would have fallen for Crusch on the spot, to which she chuckles that had not the dreams of conquest occupied the throne of her heart, she would have fallen for him too.
  • Pragmatic Hero: Crusch is a great leader and brave hero, but she seldom helps anyone if it does not benefit her in some form, and double if it actually inconveniences her.
  • Rousing Speech: Her great charisma allows her to rally her soldiers, giving courage even when situations seem bleak. She gives one before the battle against the White Whale, and another during its climax.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: She looks great in a dress. Subaru barely recognizes her.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: Even with the threat of an entire village being wiped out, Crusch declines to aid Subaru because there's nothing in it for her.
  • The Stoic: Displays very little emotion to the point where even her smiles are subdued.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: When dealing with political matters, she's formal, professional, cool-headed and quick to show her audience the door if they have no offer that will benefit her. She does show a softer and friendly side to the people she trusts or when she's not trying to get something from you in a negotiation.
  • Sword Beam: Her "Hyakunin Hitotachi" note
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She's an assertive young woman who prefers masculine clothing, but she doesn't mind putting on a dress every once in a while.
  • Tomboyish Voice: She has a low voice that matches perfectly with her Bifauxnen nature and to contrast with Felix. After she loses her memories, Yuka Iguchi changes to a gentle voice for Crusch.
  • Wine Is Classy: Is seen enjoying evening liquor from a wine glass no less.

    Felix Argyle

Felix Argyle

Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Sarah Anne Williams (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/felix_argyle_anime_5.png

Also going by "Ferris," a Lugunica Royal Knight that sports feline features, such as a tail and ears. Felix likes to take advantage of his feminine appearance and adopts feminine mannerisms, mostly to tease others who aren't expecting it. He's also a powerful water magician, specializing in healing magic.

  • Camp Straight: Despite being very In Touch with His Feminine Side (i.e. penchant for crossdressing, using third-person pronouns and if not that feminine first-person pronouns, acting flamboyant) and having an extreme end of Dude Looks Like a Lady appearance, he clearly has what is essentially a relationship with Crusch.
  • Cat Boy: He has cat ears and a tail due to having both human and demihuman blood.
  • Consummate Liar: Felix is one of the few people that has ever been able to successfully lie to Crusch multiple times.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Generally, Ferris dislikes being called by his birth name, Felix. However, this does not stop his boss Marcus from doing so.
  • Fantastic Racism: Felix was mistreated for his demihuman features in the past.
  • Effeminate Voice: He's a very cute Cat Boy who is into crossdressing and has a feminine voice that can fool anyone who doesn't know about his true gender.
  • Good Is Not Soft: As playful and kind as he is, Felix is still a dutiful knight of the Royal Guard, and does not hesitate when combating his enemies. he can also be very stern when he needs to be and defensive of Crusch's honor.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: He managed to heal himself back to perfect condition after being caught in an explosion that Subaru needed a forcefield to survive but was still knocked out by. Meanwhile, Felix managed to survive, stay conscious and quickly heal himself despite the explosion being strong enough to reduce his clothes to nothing.
  • Heal It with Water: He can summon water mana through a person's body which stimulates an individual's natural healing capabilities and speeds up wound recoveries. Thanks to having the Divine Protection of Water, he's the best healer in the kingdom.
  • In Touch with His Feminine Side: He has a very feminine appearance coupled with a similarly feminine-sounding voice, loves crossdressing, and generally acts flamboyant.
  • Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: He was accused of being conceived by an affair as both his parents were human.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The Feminine Boy to Crusch's Masculine Girl. Felix acts and dresses like a girl to contrast Crusch's tomboyish personality and fashion sense.
  • Meaningful Name: His name is almost identical to "Felis," a genus of smaller cats from which the domesticated cat lies in.
  • The Medic: Felix is the most skilled user of water magic on the continent. As a result, he is contracted to heal Subaru's injuries after the mansion arc.
  • Moment Killer: Interrupts Subaru when he confesses his love for Rem in the Light Novel.
  • Non-Action Guy: While his skill with healing water magic is without peer, Felix doesn't have much if any combat abilities.
  • No Sympathy: For weak, self-pitying people. Due to his work as a healer, people who give up on life are below Felix's sympathy. He also had this attitude towards Subaru before he starts taking in levels of badass. However, he does show sympathy for Subaru when he suffers a complete mental breakdown after a particularly bad death reset. While he can't identify what caused it, he recognizes it as a valid case.
  • Playful Cat Smile: His default expression, sometimes coupled with Cute Little Fangs.
  • Sobriquet Sex Switch: He enjoys crossdressing a lot and wants everyone to call him "Ferris," which is a more femenine version of his birth name Felix. Despite this he makes it clear he is a boy both body and soul.
  • Third-Person Person: When he's with friends, he refers to himself in the third-person, showing his playful, effeminate nature.
  • Undying Loyalty: He is unquestioningly loyal to Crusch, whom he shares a close friendship with.
  • Uneven Hybrid: Both of Felix's parents are human. His Cat Boy features are a recessive trait from a demihuman ancestor four generations ago that resurfaced with Felix.
  • Unsettling Gender-Reveal: To Subaru.
  • Water Is Womanly: Gender Flipped. Felix is a water mage who wears blue and uses water to heal but is a man — a man who has feminine mannerisms and likes crossdressing in girly dresses, causing Subaru to mistake him as a woman.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Aside from Subaru's initial shock at discovering this adorable Cat Girl is a crossdressing dude, Felix is portrayed in a positive light and no one makes a big deal out of his crossdressing hobby.

    Wilhelm van Astrea

Wilhelm van Astrea

Voiced by: Kenyū Horiuchi (Japanese), Kaito Ishikawa (Japanese, young), Marc Diraison (English, S1), Brock Foster Powell (English, S2), Billy Kametz (English, young) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wilhelm_van_astrea_anime.png

A retired Lugunica Royal Guard and skilled swordsman who works as Crusch's servant.

  • Always Second Best: He had this relationship with Theresia before eventually mellowing out and getting romantically involved with her. It is subverted when he finally becomes strong enough to defeat her in a duel.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Subaru manages to sum him up in one question before anyone could even realize the meaning.
Subaru: You probably think your wife is the prettiest girl in the world. Isn't that what you thought when you proposed to her?
  • Badass Normal: In a world full of people who use magic to boost their fighting capabilities, are able to borrow the power of spirits, or have received The Gift in some form, Wilhelm brings nothing to the table except his skills with a sword. This is more than enough to make him one of the deadliest warriors in the continent. He likes to tell people anyone can pull off the same crazy stunts he does… if they are willing to spend their entire life training like he did.
  • Best Her to Bed Her: He married Theresia after he was able to defeat her in a duel.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Unlike Reinhard and other skilled swordsmen, Wilheim was just as talentless as Subaru when he picked up swordsmanship. However, decades of training and effort made him strong enough to be able to match the previous Sword Saint.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: He became really angry at Theresia when she rescued him from a band of orcs because she effortlessly beat him in the skill he honed his whole life around. He also saw their previous encounters as her retroactively mocking his training by omitting that she was skilled in swordplay.
  • Crusading Widower: Seeks to kill the White Whale for killing his wife, the previous Sword Saint.
  • Declaration of Protection: He declared to Theresia that his reason to wield his sword was to protect her.
  • Doomed Hometown: His hometown was sacked during the civil war by demi-human force in revenge for their comrades and killing one of their leaders.
  • Everyone Has Standards: In one loop, when he notices newfound malicious intent in Subaru's eyes, he abruptly stops training him in sword fighting. He expresses swords are meant to be used to protect what is important and that teaching a man that has lost his purpose is meaningless.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Averted, but discussed as Wilhelm had to train long and hard to become a renowned swordsman whereas his wife's talent allowed her to reach the rank with presumably less effort.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Despite his age, Wilhelm is still lightning fast, physically powerful, and has survived attacks and explosions that could easily kill a lesser warrior.
  • Master Swordsman: Is known to be one of the best swordsmen in Lugunica.
  • Mentor Archetype: To Subaru, teaching him about swordplay and hard work.
  • The Mourning After: He still loves his wife deeply despite her passing. Avenging her is his motivation to kill the White Whale.
  • My Greatest Failure: His wife's death at the hands of the White Whale.
  • Old Soldier: He is old, by human standards, yet still picks up a sword and has skill and experience to back it up.
  • Red Baron: Wilhelm is titled the Sword Demon.
  • The Resenter:
    • When he was younger, Wilhelm dedicated his life to learning the art of the sword. He became irritated when he learned that Theresia not only easily surpassed him in skill but resented her talent as she hated bloodshed.
    • In the present time, he resents his grandson Reinhard because his wife's power as the Sword Saint was passed over to him at the worst of timings. Wilhelm's relationship with Reinhard is strained, to say the least.
  • Retired Badass: He might be old enough to retire, but he can still kick a lot of ass.
  • Revenge: He considers killing the White Whale as his greatest goal in life, wanting revenge for it killing his wife. He achieves it....except he suspects that, tricky gimmicks aside, the White Whale was simply too weak to have ever killed his wife, aided by the fact he still remembered her, rather than her being Retgone by its mist. It would be subsequently revealed in the light novels of Arc 5 that Theresa was actually confronted during the chaos of the attack by Pandora, who is greatly implied to have killed her, though Wilhelm has yet to even learn of Pandora's existence.
  • Swallowed Whole: Gets swallowed by the White Whale in the first battle against it. Then he claws his way out like a badass.
  • Took the Wife's Name: He took on his wife's last name when they got married because the House Astrea is a noble house. He keeps the name after Theresia's death, showing how much he came to love her despite his contempt and jealousy of the Astrea name for their renown swordsmanship. After he kills the White Whale to avenge Theresia, he takes up his original last name, Trias.
  • The Von Trope Family: His last name is van Astrea after he marries into a family of famous swordsmen.

Anastasia Camp

    Anastasia Hoshin

Anastasia Hoshin

Voiced by: Kana Ueda (Japanese), Cassandra Lee Morris (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anastasia_hoshin_anime.png

One of the participants in the Royal Selection. Anastasia hails from the foreign land of Kararagi, where she has made a name for herself as a key business figure and serves as head of the powerful Hoshin Trading Company.

  • Accent Interest: Subaru is quick to notice Anastasia speaks in Kansai dialect, emphasizing her status as a foreigner. It's later revealed to be the native way of speaking in the Kararagi City-States.
  • Demonic Possession: After the events of Arc 5, Anastasia was possessed by her artificial spirit Echidna (called Eridna to better differentiate her from creator), who is currently unable to give Anastasia back her body.
  • Driven to Madness: Arc 6 Under the influence of the miasma she stabs Ram with a trick knife she keeps for self-defense.
  • First Love: According to the author, Anastasia's first love was Ricardo.
  • It Was a Gift: The star-shaped hairpin that Anastasia wears was given as a gift from Ricardo.
  • Legacy Character: Despite her surname being "Hoshin", she's not directly related to Hoshin of the Wilderness. She chose the name because she was inspired by his legacy.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Just by knowing Subaru was staying at Crusch's place, Anastasia managed to trick him into revealing extremely important information as well as teaching him a lesson on manipulating people in the process.
  • Merchant Prince: Anastasia became a female example of this on her way to being one of the foremost merchants of Kararagi.
  • Never Given a Name: She was born in poverty without a name, thus she came to name herself.
  • Pretty in Mink: She has a white fur hat and cape when looking her best.
  • Self-Made Woman: Anastasia managed to work her way from having literally nothing to being the head of one of the greatest trading companies in Kararagi.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After manipulating Subaru into giving her information about Crusch, Anastasia give him tips about negotiating and left a piece of paper that would assure him a dragon carriage.

Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi (Japanese), Chris Niosi (English, S1), Alejandro Saab (English, S2) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/julius_juukulius_anime.png

A knight of Anastasia Hoshin. Dignified and refined, Julius is a model knight, as well as a skilled spirit user.

  • Alliterative Name: Julius Juukulius
  • Cruel to Be Kind: After Subaru insults every knight in the capital, Julius challenges him to a duel in order to give him a beating and prevent the other knights from killing him in retaliation.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He thrashes Subaru effortlessly in a one on one duel, humiliating the latter.
  • Elemental Powers: Has a blessing that allows him to contract multiple lesser spirits of various elemental alignment.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: After fighting alongside each other, he begins to consider Subaru a friend.
  • Hidden Depths: Asides from being an honorable knight, Arc 6 reveals he's something of a history nerd, and gets quite excited at the prospect of learning things no else has.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: During Subaru's rant against the knights, Julius states that Subaru doesn't deserve to be called Emilia's knight. According to him, if Subaru were truly her knight, then his actions shouldn't make Emilia look so disgusted. After he says that, Subaru has an Oh, Crap! moment and notices how angry Emilia was watching Subaru's argument with Julius. Before he pointed this out, Subaru was more focused on proving his superiority to the knights, rather than how this would affect Emilia.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Subaru initially hated his guts, but comes to learn he is actually quite noble after all and the two of them form an Enemy Mine.
  • Magic Knight: Like Emilia, he can control and be aided by lesser spirits, but notes that this power does not stop him from also refining himself as a swordsman.
  • Mercy Kill: After Subaru is possessed by Betelgeuse, he begs for Felis and Julius to kill him.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: Remains level-headed and dignified at all times, treating others with the grace of a knight. Even when Suabru insults him and his fellow knights, he remains calm, choosing to challenge Subaru to an honorable duel to settle their differences.
  • Ret-Gone: Everyone, except Subaru, has forgotten everything about him as his name was eaten by the Archbishop of Gluttony.
  • The Rival: While initially one-sided on Subaru's part, due to his envy of Julius's station and acquaintance with Emilia, Julius also starts to acknowledge Subaru for his tenacious spirit. Their relationship remains tense, though they do grow to understand one another.
  • Rivals Team Up: He comes to Subaru's aid in fighting the Witch's Cult, though neither are particularly happy about the alliance.
  • Seeing Through Another's Eyes: He's able to use spirit arts to see through Subaru's eyes, which allows him to fight off Petelgeuse's Unseen Hand.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Is this to Subaru since Subaru thinks Julius is better than him. Julius doesn't reciprocate too much as he finds Subaru to be a much better person than he thinks he is though he is quite willing to throw some subtle taunts at him.
  • Technician Versus Performer: Noted in Arc 6 to be a Technician to Emilia's Performer - he polished his skill with the sword methodically, while Emilia fights based on instinct and essentially came up with her own way of fighting. Unfortunately, this dissonance makes it hard for them to fight together against a common enemy, since they can't match each other's strengths.

Iron Fang

Captain

    Ricardo Welkin

Ricardo Welkin

Voiced by: Kenji Nomura (Japanese), Imari Williams (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ricardo_rezero_artbook.png

The captain of Anastasia's Demihuman mercenaries from Kararagi called the Iron Fang. He is a Kolbold.

  • BFS: He wields a rather large meat cleaver looking blade.
  • A Father to His Men: As captain of his team of mercenaries, Ricardo extends great camaraderie towards his men, making sure they are at ease and protecting them in battle.
  • Large and in Charge: Amongst his team, Ricardo is the largest and most muscular, even by Demihuman standards.
  • Taking the Bullet: He protects Subaru from an attack from the White Whale, becoming critically injured in the process.
  • Wolf Man: He's a large and muscular wolf demihuman.

Vice Captains

    Tropes applying to the three
Three Beasthuman triplets, who together serve as the three vice captains of the Iron Fang, under Ricardo's command.
  • Badass Adorable: They are small, feline Beasthumans. All three are strong enough to be vice captains in Anastasia's mercenary force despite their youth.
  • Brother–Sister Team: Mimi occasionally teams up with one of her brothers in battle.
  • Happily Adopted: The triplets were abandoned by their parents, but were taken in by Ricardo, making him more or less their father-figure.
  • Little Bit Beastly: They look like children with cat ears and tails.
  • Older Than They Look: Their small size makes them look like children, but they're actually in their mid-teens.
  • Pint-Sized Kid: They're very small children.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Mimi and Hetaro are complete opposites to each other. Mimi is the strong, boastful and immature one, meanwhile Hetaro is much more pensive and calm.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Mimi is the childish, energetic red to her vastly more mature brother, Hetaro. Together, they strike an ideal balance as vice captains.
  • Strong Girl, Smart Guy: Mimi has a bigger focus on combat ability, while Hetaro is the weaker, but wiser one who mitigates Mimi's aggressiveness. Similarly, Tivey is the most business savvy, but his combat skills pale in comparison to his sister's.
  • Super-Scream: The triplets wield powerful wind magic that takes the form of concussive wind blasted from their screams.
  • Synchronization: The triplets all possess a blessing that allows them to share their burdens, be it physical or emotional pain, fatigue, etc. Unfortunately, due to Mimi's aggressive nature, it is usually Hetaro and Tivey who are stuck absorbing Mimi's burdens.

Felt Camp

Felt

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/felt_anime_5.png

A 15-year-old thief who grew up in a poor village. She steals Emilia's insignia to sell to the highest bidder. Reinhard discovers Felt is, in fact, a member of the Royal Family. She then becomes the fifth candidate in the Royal Selection.

  • Badass Adorable: Despite her young age, she is fairly handy with a blade and has Super-Speed.
  • Badass and Child Duo: Part of one with Old-Man Rom.
  • Demoted to Extra: After the first story arc is done and her eventual return for a few episodes in the third arc, she doesn't have much presence in many story arcs.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Birthday: Felt doesn't know when she was born nor her real age. According to the author, she considers her birthday to be August 8, the day Rom found her.
  • Easily Forgiven: Emilia quickly forgives Felt even after she stole her insignia from her.
  • Eat the Rich: Out of contempt for the upper class, Felt promises that if she is made king, she will destroy the class system and ruin the nobles and knights.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Her pants only cover one leg, leaving the other one bare.
  • Femininity Failure: When she's introduced as the fifth candidate for the next ruler in royal election, Felt enters the room in an elegant dress and looking like a real royal lady...and then she kicks Reinhard and begins speaking like her usual rude self.
  • Fragile Speedster: Is noted by Elsa to have the Blessing of the Wind, which allows her to move very quickly. Not that it's enough to give her a chance against Elsa.
  • Justified Criminal: She is a thief because, as she herself says, otherwise she would have no other option but to sell her body.
  • Likes Older Men: According to an interview with the author, her ideal type of man is Rom, and she's generally more inclined to like men around his age.
  • Lost Orphaned Royalty: She grew up in the slums of the capital as a thief until Reinhard found her and discovered she's a lost princess who was kidnapped as a child.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Felt is the name Rom gave her and she doesn't know her real name. This comes in handy since the Archbishop of Gluttony is unable to eat false names.
  • Rags to Royalty: She goes from a young thief struggling to survive in the slums to a lost princess and potential heir to the throne.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: She's later revealed to be a princess and potential heir to the throne, who was kidnapped as a small child.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She wears a long red scarf around her neck.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: She looks amazing in a dress.
  • Signature Headgear: She always wears a black bow at the top of her head.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Among the royal candidates, Felt is the youngest and shortest.
  • Tomboy Princess: Finding out she's a princess doesn't affect her tough and rude attitude at all.
  • Tomboyish Voice: She uses a raspy voice when she speaks to show her lack of femininity.
  • Unexpected Successor: Revealed to be the niece of the late king and the fifth candidate for the throne.
  • Unwillingly Girly Tomboy: She's forced to look like a royal lady by Reinhard after he discovers Felt is a long lost princess. Felt is clearly not happy with this.

    Reinhard van Astrea

Reinhard van Astrea

Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura (Japanese), Robbie Daymond (English) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reinhard_van_astrea_anime.png

An easy-going royal knight who holds the title of Sword Saint. He exhibits extraordinary powers in combat. After he discovers Felt is a long-lost princess of the Lugunica royal bloodline, he pledges himself to serve as Felt's knight and fully support her throughout the Royal Selection.

Tropes that apply to him in the main series:

  • The Ace: Singularly the strongest shown character in the series. As a testament to his strength, Reinhard was able to defeat Elsa with a sword that he randomly picked up off the floor.
  • Adaptive Ability: Reinhard's ability allows him to gain blessings in response to the situations he is placed in. In addition, these new blessings don't disappear afterward, allowing him to stack abilities to become almost invincible. During a trip to Vollachia, Julius witnessed him fighting off a small army of Half-Human Hybrids without a scratch despite their unique fighting styles, noting that it was due to the combination of the 'first-sight blessing', allowing him to instinctively understand how to react to an attack he is seeing for the first time, and the 'twice-seen' blessing, which enables him to react with greater speed to an attack he has witnessed before, making it functionally impossible to hit him with a new or repeated attack, especially with his insane physical abilities.
  • Auto-Revive: Reinhard has the Blessing of the Phoenix which brings him back to life if he is killed once.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In the "bad timelines" in which Subaru dies, like when Puck goes on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge for Emilia's death, Reinhard arrives shortly thereafter to defeat whatever killed Subaru and subsequently save the world from that particular threat.
  • Born Winner: Comes from a line of master swordsmen and was born with a blessing that lets him wish for more blessings which he can permanently keep with no limits on the number, whereas normal people are extremely lucky to be born with one, not to mention his inherited blessing as the Sword Saint. However, the series also somewhat deconstructs this aspect of him. Reinhard has multiple abilities and blessings that basically guarantee him victory in any conflict no matter the odds, but he is often absent or unable to intervene in the deadly situations that Subaru encounters, and whenever he does show up, it's usually after somebody has already perished note  and he cannot restore the dead back to life, only being able to obliterate the threat that caused so much death to prevent further harm. Subaru's unique power allows him to pre-empt deadly situations and make it out with minimal loss of life, but Reinhard can only ever appear after a large crisis has happened that requires the power of an almighty hero to be stopped. This is noted by several characters in the Arc Words that appear around Reinhard, that he has the power to protect everybody, but cannot actually save anyone, especially those he is close to, and his sheer overwhelming power actually alienates him from many, including his own family due to the circumstances in which he inherited the blessing of the Sword Saint.
Multiple characters: You are a true hero... and a hero is all you can be.
  • Broken Ace: As the strongest individual in the Royal Kingdom of Lugnica, he was forced to join the Royal Guard at the age of fourteen, becoming the strongest weapon in the Kingdom's possession. However, he gained the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint after his grandmother lost it in the middle of her battle with the White Whale and as a result, Reinhard came to be despised by his closest family members who blame him for Theresia's death.
  • Bullet Dodges You: Thanks to one of his many blessings, any projectile aimed at Reinhard will always miss.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Reinhard's strength is enough to shatter the ground with a kick and grapple with foes three times his size with ease. At one point in Arc 5, Regulus Corneas thinks he's gotten rid of him for good after he used his authority to throw him far into the sky. Reinhard returns after Subaru has weakened Regulus' authority to have a time limitation now, revealing that he got back down to earth by jumping off the moon.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: He's willing to help out basically anyone he meets, even if it involves fighting a murderous assassin.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Two years after his birth, his mother fell in a coma. At the age of five, he obtained the title of the Sword Saint after his grandmother Theresia van Astrea passed away during her fierce battle with the White Whale. The reason for her death was the sudden loss of her Divine Protection of the Sword Saint which mysteriously disappeared midway through the battle, transferring it to young Reinhard. His grandfather, Wilhelm van Astrea, blamed Reinhard for her death, causing their relationship to plummet, leaving only his father who still cared about him. Sadly, his relationship with his father gravely deteriorated as well. After he gained the aforementioned blessing, his father became an alcoholic, and gradually started to blame him for Theresia's death as well.
  • Deus Exit Machina: He's often sent off to deal with enemies far more powerful than anyone else in the cast can deal with, forcing Subaru to pick up the slack.
  • Flight, Strength, Heart: Among Reinhard's abilities, many of which are ridiculously powerful, is the Blessing of Salt Reasoning which prevents him from mixing up salt and sugar.
  • Foil: To Subaru. Reinhard is an example of the overpowered main character archetype that plagues stories of this genre and was written to contrast Subaru's lack of protagonist abilities and potential. Both have extremely overpowered abilities, but Reinhard's allows him to solve every problem by himself, while Subaru has to consistently borrow the powers of his friends to get things done. However, the contrasting nature of their abilities means that whilst Reinhard can only every resolve crisis situations after the threat has appeared and caused an immense loss of life, Subaru can preemptively "save" those who are endangered and prevent their demise, something which Reinhard clearly wishes he were capable of. Likewise, both have problems with their families, but Subaru manages to resolve them, while Reinhard's problems continue to get worse. Reinhard's family (his father and Grandfather) have become split into following one of the three throne candidates save Emilia, putting them in opposition to him in the Royal Selection, and despite attempts to patch things up between Reinhard and Wilhelm in arc 5 with Subaru's prompting to the elderly swordsman, Reinhard cutting down the resurrected form of Theresa during the battle with the Witch Cult and refusing to see that it was anything more than a mindless corpse soldier of the enemy, despite her regaining her sense of self after the mortal blow, shatters Wilhelm's relationship with him even further and results in him becoming extremely frosty in demeanour towards his Grandson, as opposed to Subaru forming a closer bond to both the elder and younger Astras throughout the ordeal.
  • Invincible Hero: He's never even been hurt, much less lost to any enemy he has fought. This contrasts Subaru, who appears to be an invincible hero only when looked upon in hindsight, and is by far the least combat efficient of the rival knights in the Royal Selection.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: He doesn't wear any armor, but is part of the Royal Guards and fits all of the characteristics.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Reinhard is a perfect Nice Guy all-around. His father, however, is a massive Jerkass — in part because his son is so outstanding and perfect a knight, additionally gaining the blessing of the Sword Saint that passed over Heinkel himself despite training himself non-stop to be worthy of the blessing all his life.
  • Lonely at the Top: For all his blessings he has very few friends, and him inheriting the blessing of the Sword Saint also caused a massive rift between himself and his family. Word of God states that this is averted in the Ayamatsu If continuity... until Subaru works his magic. In the present storyline, it's implied that Subaru is something of an Only Friend to him, as in his ignorance of Reinhard's capabilities during their first meeting in arc 1, he treated him as an equal and compatriot, which few if any have actually done towards the Sword Saint. Even after becoming aware of how absurdly powerful Reinhard actually is, Subaru nonetheless is determined to become an outstanding knight who can "do the things that [Reinhard] can't do" as a rival knight in the Royal Selection, pleasing Reinhard that there is somebody out there who actually believes he does have limits like an ordinary person.
  • Master Swordsman: Comes with the title of Sword Saint. His sword skills are top-notch.
  • Mundane Utility: Besides the blessings that made him an impossibly powerful, there are ones that he uses for everyday stuff, like cooking.
  • Nice Guy: He's possibly the most perfect friendly guy out there. Subaru even points out how likable he is during their first meeting.
  • Red Is Heroic: He's the strongest hero of his world and has red hair, like everyone else of the House Astrea.
  • Stock Light-Novel Hero: Subaru is a deconstruction of the trope, but Reinhard is the trope almost played straight. It would only be straighter if he were the main character.
  • Story-Breaker Power: The only reason Reinhard doesn't eliminate every obstacle in the story instantly is that he is either distracted or in another place. In fact, this is something commented upon by several characters, who note he has the power to resolve any crises he encounters like a true hero, regardless of the apparently-impossible odds, but he himself is always absent whenever such a situation is occurring for various reasons, either due to the crisis occurring in another location, or being too low-key for him to catch wind of it. Accordingly, despite being a 'hero' he is unable to save those whose lives are lost in the time it takes him to arrive, and he himself is deeply aware of this limitation despite his overwhelming strength. Furthermore, as a technical rival to Subaru and Emilia because of him being Felt's knight, him resolving their crises situations for them reflects badly on their capabilities. Accordingly, Subaru often has to find a solution to his problems himself, and Reinhard's immense skills are usually showcased in a Bad Future after Subaru died in that timeline.
  • Superpower Lottery: Reinhard's ability is to gain any powers he needs at any time. This allows him to fight equally to essentially every threat.
  • The Von Trope Family: His family name is van Astrea.
  • Walk on Water: One of his many blessings gives him the ability to walk on water.
  • World's Best Warrior: Quite possibly the best swordsman in the world.
  • World's Strongest Man: The only known character that is possibly stronger than Reinhard is Satella, and she destroyed half of the world.

Tropes that apply to him in the Ayamatsu If timeline:

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: According to Word of God, Reinhard's family problems have been resolved and they're on better terms than the main series. Too bad Subaru came along and wrecked things...
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Inverted with his family as Word of God states they have a better relationship than the main series. Then later played straight as Reinhard loses his family, friends, reputation, and the entire kingdom he served due to a very personal grudge on Subaru's end.
  • Always Someone Better: Subaru sees him as this for being able to resolve the problem against Elsa easily while he himself have failed for over 80 loops. This leads to very terrible consequences for Reinhard.
  • Arch-Enemy: Is unknowingly this for Subaru, and after losing everything that he loves by the former's actions, it becomes personal on Reinhard's end.
  • Bewildering Punishment: As far as he's concerned, Subaru came from literally nowhere to murder his loved ones and destroy the Capital... all for the goal of ruining his reputation as a flawless knight. Though to be fair, it's not as if Subaru, who's already undergoing Sanity Slippage from abusing Return by Death to the full extent, could really explain his motivations either.
  • Create Your Own Villain: His actions (and, in this case, lack of actions) at the start of Ayamatsu If are what shape Subaru into a Villain Protagonist - which leads to terrible things befalling every other named character, including himself.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Is the nail in the Ayamatsu If - him not coming to Subaru's aid against the thugs in the alley causes Subaru to experience over 80 loops of failing to save Emilia, which does a number on his sanity. And then he unknowingly causes this unstable Subaru to experience his Despair Event Horizon...
  • Good Counterpart: To Subaru in this timeline, and unlike the main series, Reinhard's family problems have been resolved while Subaru's have gone through the deep end. Subaru himself lampshades this, and outright admits that one of the driving forces in his campaign against Reinhard is his envy over him.
  • Hero Antagonist: In this timeline, Subaru is the Villain Protagonist who succeeds at destroying the kingdom that Reinhard wanted to protect.
  • Invincible Hero: Deconstructed to a horrific degree in this timeline. Despite Subaru's fall to villainy and abuse of Return by Death, he can never defeat Reinhard directly no matter how many times he resets. Instead, Subaru has to settle for trying to destroy the country around Reinhard instead, leaving him technically undefeated, but having absolutely failed in being able to use his overwhelming power to protect a single thing.
  • Is This What Anger Feels Like?: Subaru's actions in this cause Reinhard to feel hatred towards an enemy for the very first time.
  • Powerful and Helpless: Which Subaru has proven in this timeline. Reinhard's Divine Protection is more than capable of preventing him from being killed or physically defeated directly and indirectly by Subaru, even when he abused Return by Death to Story-Breaker Power levels. However, none of that matters against someone who can loop back at a certain point in time to learning everything that would make Reinhard tick to where Subaru is able to exploit and put the Sword Saint through a living hell of watching everything around him crumble.

Felt's caretaker, who is like a grandfather to her. He runs a tavern and has a storehouse full of stolen goods.

  • Badass and Child Duo: Part of one with Felt.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: His eyebrows and large and go past his nose.
  • Chained by Fashion: Carry a large chain around his body.
  • Cool Old Guy: He has an easy-going personality, and a kind heart, always looking out for Felt.
  • Gentle Giant: To put it simply, Rom's biceps are thicker than the average person's waist, and with a heart just as kind.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: His enormous physique and Super-Strength don't amount much when facing Elsa, who dodges every one of his clumsy attacks and butchers him.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Rom's real name is Valga Cromwell.
  • Parental Substitute: He acts as Felt's caretaker and he's the closest thing to a family she has.
  • Pauper Patches: Rom lives in the slums and his pants are patched.
  • Rebel Leader: Was a hard-liner leader for demihuman rebels in the Demihuman War 40 years ago. Which is how he knew the secret passage under Lugunica palace in Episode 13.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: As expected of a giant, he hits very hard but has no fighting technique or skill. His wild swings with a wooden club are absolutely no match for a professional killer like Elsa.

From left to right: Kan, Chin, Ton

A trio of thugs inhabiting the alleys of Lugunica's capital. After the Royal Selection begins, Felt recruits them to join the Felt Camp.

  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: Ton is big, Chin is thin, and Kan is short. True to tradition, Chin is more or less the trio's leader.
  • Boisterous Weakling: All three of them, but most of all, Kan, who is tiny and the least intimidating.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Appears to be this at first, but ultimately Subverted. The trio seem pretty horrified about their accidental stabbing of Subaru, with the sole exception of Kan, who insists they might as well take what he's got. While clearly shocked by this, too, they still run away, leaving Subaru to gasp his last breaths alone in the streets.
  • Goldfish Poop Gang: They are encountered by Subaru multiple times, though he mostly writes them off as weak early-game fodder.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Chin is a shrewd thug whose long bangs cover the right side of his face.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: They actually manage to kill Subaru in one loop when Chin accidentally stabs him in a moment of rashness. The trio promptly freaks out and flees the scene, leaving Subaru to his pitiful fate.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Their actual names are Gaston, Larkins, and Camberley.
  • Playing with Fire: Chin is able to use Fire Magic.
  • Punny Name: Together, their names are a play on "tonchinkan", which in Japanese means "absurd" or "contradictory."
  • Riches to Rags: Chin was born as a noble. However, after unknown events, he left his family and began living in the slums.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Their panicking dialogue after fatally stabbing Subaru in his third loop clues him in to what he needs to do to pass the three armed muggers in a back ally of the capital city when he can't fight them off himself — call for the guards. This fails to actually get the attention of any nearby guards, but it does get Reinhard's attention.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Reinhard personally trains all three of them so they grow stronger.
  • Weapon for Intimidation: Chin brandishes a pair of knives for intimidation. In one loop, Subaru tries to ignore Chin and gets stabbed by the latter's knife by accident, making the trio of thugs freak out.
