[[caption-width-right:300:''"But perhaps victory is in the simpler things you have long forgotten; things that require a smaller, more honest soul."'']]
->'''Voiced By:''' Creator/ShannonMcCormick [EN], Creator/KazuhikoInoue [JP]

->''"Being a team leader isn't just a title you carry into battle, but a badge you wear constantly. If you are not always performing at your absolute best, then what reason do you give others to follow you?"''

The headmaster of Beacon Academy, Ozpin is also the leader of a secret international group of Hunters who protect the world from hidden and dangerous threats.
----
* AffectionateNickname: James Ironwood and Qrow Branwen, who have apparently known him for a long time, both call him "Oz."
* AmbiguousSituation: At the end of Volume 3, Ozpin disappears. Qrow takes possession of Ozpin's cane but, like everyone else, doesn't know what has happened to him. His voice actor, Shannon [=McCormick=], states that Ozpin's situation is 'complicated' after Volume 3. Ozpin is last seen fighting Cinder. Although Qrow regards him as missing, he doesn't act like Ozpin's dead. Salem supports Cinder's insistence that Ozpin is dead when in the presence of her associates, but doesn't seem to actually believe it. [[spoiler: Ozpin eventually begins speaking into the thoughts of a farmer named Oscar, explaining that their Auras have become bonded and that they now share memories and thoughts... and that this happened to Ozpin too, when he was young.]]
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Ironwood's response to the danger facing humanity is to bring a large army to protect Vale, but it takes him a long time to understand why Ozpin, Glynda and Qrow disapprove. He only comprehends during a group argument that ends when Ozpin asks him a question that emphasises how armies unsettle people enough to generate the kind of negative atmosphere that will attract the Grimm.
-->"There's an energy in the air now, a question in the back of everyone's minds: if this is the size of our defences, what is it we're expecting to fight?"
* BarrierWarrior: The Volume 3 finale has him duel Cinder. He employs a range of tactics and abilities both in defence and offence while fighting her, including the ability to create a large domed shield around himself that is translucent green in colour and which throws off green energy sparks. Although he initially slams his cane into the ground to form it, he can also maintain the barrier while moving.
* BeneathTheMask: In public, he portrays an unflappable attitude and reacts to everything with great patience, kindness and good humour. Behind closed doors, when dealing with his secret inner circle, he's willing to display a much greater range of emotion. He gets irritated with Ironwood's militaristic attitude and Qrow's disorderly behaviour and more than once holds his head in his hands whenever his subordinates argue. When Cinder's plot finally goes public, he uses controlled anger to make sure Ironwood, Glynda and Qrow follow his orders.
* BadassTeacher: In the finale of Volume 3, Cinder is impossibly powerful even by the standards of a well-developed Semblance, yet Ozpin is able to fight that enormous power with just his Semblance even when directly hit by the full force of her power. They also fight in pitch darkness that is only occasionally broken by brief moments of light from their powers. Only Faunus are supposed to be capable of seeing in the dark, but it doesn't even slow these two down. By the time the scene cuts out, Ozpin is easily pushing back Cinder's power and appears to be winning, making his subsequent disappearance very mysterious.
* BigGood: As Beacon headmaster, he oversees the training of the next generation of defenders. Ironwood's introduction indicates generals officially outrank academy headmasters when he gives Ozpin permission to drop formalities, but it later becomes clear he's "served" Ozpin for years. Glynda observes Ozpin possesses experience even hunters like herself and Ironwood lack.
%% * Body Surf: Please do not add this trope due to the [=WMG=] nature of it at present; please see the Discussion Page where there is an ongoing, open discussion about it.
* BrutalHonesty: His induction speech abrasively states the students standing before him are wasting themselves and it's up to them, not the teachers, to do something about it. Later on, he bluntly states that the first thing the students will do is throw themselves headlong into battle against deadly forces and that if they wish to survive they better kill anything that moves because the teachers will not come to their rescue. Oddly enough, he manages to make these speeches come across as [[DareToBeBadass inspiring]] rather than [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech discouraging]].
* CaneFu: When Ozpin fights, he uses his cane like a fencing sword. He is capable of fighting an such a high speed, he can turn multiple projectiles flying towards him into dust without them hitting him, and can strike an opponent so fast they can't react in time to parry the cane. He can also slam the cane into the ground to create protective barriers.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: While he feels the weight of his responsibilities, he rarely shows them openly, with them only coming out in occasionally distant moods. He admits to Ruby that he's made "more mistakes than any man, woman, or child" on Remnant.
* TheChooserOfTheOne: He selected Pyrrha to be the next Fall Maiden.
* ClassyCane: To go with Ozpin's smart, dark green suit, is a dark, silver-topped cane. The silver handle of the cane has a delicate vine-like pattern flowing down it. Where the handle joins the shaft, are cogs and a silver lever. Although it complements his appearance, he can also use it in battle, wielding it like a rapier and using it as a focus to produce a barrier that can even stop the full force of a Maiden's power. This kind of use does not require activating either the lever or cogs.
* ClockPunk: Gears are a motif of his. His office is in the heart of the clock tower and as such the gears and cogs are everywhere. Even his desk is made of gears, and his chair is designed to give him the appearance of gear-themed wings.
* ClockTower: Beacon Academy's tallest tower and his office, with the clock's face acting as a large window.
* CoolOldGuy: He bribes Ruby with [[SweetTooth cookies]] when they first meet, gives her a kind speech about TheChainsOfCommanding when Ruby is uncertain of her place as leader of Team RWBY, and tries to ease her social anxiety by comparing dancing to her favourite activity, fighting. He knows Blake is deeply troubled about the White Fang and offers her a shoulder to lean on should she ever need it.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: When Ruby asks him if Weiss is right to claim Ozpin is mistaken to appoint her team leader, Ozpin tells her that he isn't - but only after very grimly admitting that he's made more mistakes than any man, woman, or child on the planet. [[spoiler: His soul appears to continue on after death, transferring to a new host each time he dies, indicating this could be quite literal.]]
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of the 'cool, mysterious, fantasy teacher' archetype. Ozpin's unwillingness to fully explain his rationale leads to Ironwood acting on his mistrust to take political action against him. Also, Ozpin abides by the classic tendency to let his students flaunt the rules by going on a mission outside their skill-level with only a single huntsman to back them up just because the protagonists are connected to the villains. The girls find themselves hard pressed during the mission and only force Roman to speed up the plans rather than fully stopping him. The girls almost get killed, Faunus do die, and the city is invaded by Grimm. Ozpin's superiors respond by revoking his authority over the Tournament and warning him they will be discussing his career options after the Tournament is over.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Film/HarryPotter Albus Dumbledore]]: both are silver-haired, bespectacled headmasters of an elite academy who favor cryptic speeches, tend not to tell the whole truth, and admit to making colossal mistakes. They both have stern, strict deputies who stand by their side and detest his opposition ([=McGonagall=], Goodwitch), have younger associates who dislike their shady secrecy and eventually retaliate (Aberforth, Ironwood). Both allow catastrophes on their watch that lead to their superiors, who dislike the decisions they make, deposing them (Ministry/Fudge, Council), and both have a past personal relationship with the BigBad of the show.
* AFatherToHisMen: Ozpin lets the students get away with a food fight that causes chaos because he knows that they'll soon be forced to leave childhood behind. He keeps giving Ruby pep talks and offers a shoulder to Blake should she ever need it. He's willing to bend rules to support his students if it means helping them do the right thing and he personally congratulates Jaune on achieving team leader. When Ironwood accuses him of placing too many expectations in the ability of kids to fight a war, he waits until Ironwood is out of earshot before confessing he's trying to avoid exposing the students to war in the first place.
* GoodCopBadCop: Good Cop to Glynda's Bad Cop. While she was reprimanding Ruby for her foolishness, he walked in to the interrogation room with a plate of cookies for the fifteen year old girl and complimented her skills, even offering to let her into Beacon early.
* KingIncognito: {{Subverted|Trope}}; near the end of the interrogation/interview he asks Ruby if she knows who he is, which is a classic opening of this trope. She already knows exactly who he is.
* LennonSpecs: Ozpin wears a tiny set of circular, dark-tinted spectacles that are perched on the end of his nose and are held onto his ears by a pair of extremely quirky arms.
* MeaningfulName: Ozpin is the headmaster of Beacon Academy and is named after "Literature/TheWonderfulWizardOfOz". In the novels, the Wizard of Oz's full name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs, or O.Z.P.I.N.H.E.A.D. (OZPIN HEAD). The Wizard of Oz is a man who is not what he seems to be, and Ozpin is also not the ordinary huntsman he seems to be. He is a man who is hiding secrets, perhaps even from his inner circle who are supposed to know the secret threats in the world.
* MustHaveCaffeine: He is rarely seen without a coffee mug in his hand, even when he's in the most inappropriate locations. He drinks hot chocolate rather than coffee, but hot chocolate is also a caffeinated beverage and he drinks an awful lot of it. He'll sip hot chocolate while interrogating future students or while launching new students off an isolated cliff into a monster-filled forest. Even his silhouette during the Episode 9 end credits has the coffee mug in hand.
* {{Narrator}}: At the beginning of the pilot episode, a female narrator introduces the show through a speech about the history of humanity and the dangerous world of Remnant. Her cynicism and bitter is countered by a male narrator who appears to be more positive about humanity than his opponent. The male narrator is very quickly introduced as Ozpin, but the female narrator is only introduced much later on. Ozpin is also the narrator for the World of Remnant segments that give information on how the World of Remnant works.
* NotHimself: While giving a speech to the new students in Episode 3, Ruby and Yang quickly note how troubled he seems, instead of his usual lively self. Ruby even comments that it's as if he's not even present.
* OddNameOut: Every single character in the show has a name that [[ColourMotif references a colour]] in some way, even if it's just by association. Eighty years ago, a war ended that had tried to destroy artistic merit and individuality, so Remnant's naming scheme is a deliberate attempt to ensure that kind of war never happens again. Word of God has [[https://twitter.com/montyoum/status/406894139746172928/photo/1/large stated]] that Ozpin's name deliberately does not follow the colour rules for the naming of all other characters.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: It's not clear how old he is, but Ozpin's name does not match the traditional color-based naming scheme of those born after the Great War, indicating he predates it. [[spoiler: It's not clear how long he's been jumping between bodies as he's done with Oscar, but the memories of what he's done are carried with him with each new body he travels to, indicating that the Ozpin personality itself is very old.]]
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Instead of punishing Ruby for her dangerous fighting style, he instead decides to enroll her, where he can guide her development. He also advises her to earn respect as a leader instead of assuming it. He is also worried about Blake's White Fang connections, not because he judges her but because he thinks she needs his help. As she doesn't trust him, he offers her an open door for when she changes her mind. When Ruby offers information about a criminal hideout in SE Vale, he goes along with it and bends the rules to allow the team to investigate with a professional huntsman as back-up, because he knows they'll break the rules to sneak there anyway.
* RetractableWeapon: Ozpin's cane is a solid, durable item with an ornate handle that contains cogs and a lever. He can use it in battle like a fencing sword and the stem of the cane can be retracted back into the handle to enable it to be easily carried. The lever does not control the retraction or extension.
* SinkOrSwimMentor: Makes it very clear on the first official day of the school year that the instructors will not intervene with the first trial and tells the students to not hesitate to destroy anything in their path or they ''will'' die... And then he literally launches them into the forest one by one while Jaune worriedly asks several questions which he answers in a very blunt and matter of fact fashion. Later, he gives Team RWBY an exception to the rules, but warns them that he's not doing them a favor and that they had better live up to the level that they've set for themselves.
* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: Ozpin and Qrow have a very close relationship. Qrow is loyal to Ozpin to the point of picking fights in public with Winter just because she's the subordinate of the man who went behind Ozpin's back to take away Ozpin's responsibility for Vytal Festival security. Ruby comments that Ozpin and Qrow even sound alike. [[spoiler:Ozpin's disappearance after the fall of Beacon results in Qrow carrying Ozpin's cane with him as he follows Ruby through Anima. When Ozpin's soul and Aura merge with Oscar, he prompts Oscar to travel to Mistral in search of Qrow whom he knows has gone there with his cane. When Oscar finds Qrow, Ozpin prompts Oscar to say "I'd like my cane back." Qrow instantly recognises the situation for what it is and gives Oscar the cane without hesitation, saying "It's good to see you again, Oz". Later, the first thing Oscar says to Ruby is "You... have silver eyes", which is the first thing Ozpin said to Ruby.]]
* SpamAttack: Ozpin has the ability to fight at super-speed. When he uses his cane like a fencing sword, he can strike his opponent multiple times in a single second. Even with the completed power of the Fall Maiden, Cinder cannot keep up with the speed of Ozpin's cane strikes and gets hit over twenty times in just a few seconds, as if being juggled on the end of his cane.
* SuperSpeed: When Ozpin does finally decide to move or fight, he is capable of extremely fast movements that make him extremely difficult to keep track of. This allows him to move fast, strike multiple times a second, and dodge multiple attacks with incredible reflexes.
* SurveillanceAsThePlotDemands: Ozpin can watch what's going on from a distance, just by using his scroll. Most of the time, he's keeping track of what Ruby is doing, but it's not unique to him. Other characters can watch events remotely, too.
* WaistcoatOfStyle: Dark green, to go with his dark green suit. It makes the green top he wears underneath it stand out vividly.

[[folder:Glynda Goodwitch]]
!!Professor Glynda Goodwitch
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/glynda_goodwitch.png]]
[[caption-width-right:300:''"If it were up to me, you'd be sent home with a pat on the back... and a slap on the wrist!"'']]
->'''Voiced By:''' Creator/KathleenZuelch [EN], Creator/MasumiAsano [JP]

->''"We wouldn't want [Jaune] to be gobbled up by a Beowolf, now, would we?"''

A Huntress and teacher of Beacon Academy that comes to Ruby's rescue in the first episode.
----
* AdjustingYourGlasses: By the Bridge variant (with her riding crop) during her introduction, probably to invoke her 'BadassBookworm' status.
* AlliterativeName: An imperfect example as '''G'''lynda '''G'''oodwitch only produces the same sound when the first name is spoken in a clumsy fashion.
* ArsonMurderAndLifesaving: She scolds Ruby for fighting so recklessly and endangering lives in the process, culminating in her saying Ruby should be sent home with a pat on the back... she then averts the trope by returning to her focus on punishment and concluding that Ruby should also be sent home with a slap on the wrist, emphasizing her statement by whipping the table near Ruby's hand.
* BadassCape: In opposition to the rest of her attire, Goodwitch wears a black cape with purple lining. The back of the cape is adorned with Glynda's crown symbol, and ends in tatters shaped like arrowheads. This has done nothing to detract from her record of fighting on even ground with Cinder and nonchalantly knocking Grimm out around her.
* BadassTeacher: A teacher and a powerful sorceress who first appears to protect Ruby from one of Torchwick's Dust-enhanced explosions. She provides the first introduction of both a Huntress and a magical duel when she fights off Cinder and protects Ruby from harm. She's later confirmed to be the elite Beacon Academy's combat instructor.
* BarrierWarrior: When Ruby is about to be blasted by Roman in the pilot episode, Glynda appears from nowhere and deflects Roman's attack with an energy shield made of glyphs. Attack bounce off the barrier as though the barrier is a trampoline that has been turned on its side.
* BigDamnHeroes: She's introduced dropping down out of the air to block Roman's attack against Ruby.
* BoringButPractical: One of Glynda's most frequently-seen attacks is a brief, close-range pulse of telekinetic power projected from the tip of her wand. It's nothing flashy or particularly impressive, but the sheer force of the blast is typically powerful enough to OneHitKill any Grimm unlucky enough to get caught in it, as observed in "Breach" and again in "Heroes and Monsters".
* CleavageWindow: Due to her high collar, she possesses a very centralized opening in her blouse that exposes some of her cleavage.
* CurseCutShort: Ozpin cuts her off when she accuses James Ironwood of treating everything like a "contest of measuring di-".
%% * DeadpanSnarker: Has one of the most caustic wits of any character in the series. The below quote is just one example.
%% -->'''Glynda:''' Trouble sleeping?\\
%% '''Ironwood:''' Arm was acting up.\\
%% '''Glynda:''' Of course. So logically, you got out of bed, dressed yourself completely, and decided to gaze menacingly out into the distance.
* EntertaininglyWrong: As she watches team JNPR meet up in "The Emerald Forest pt 1" she states that she feels sorry for Ren, who has just teamed up with Nora, and that she doesn't know how they will get along. Ren and Nora are childhood friends and get along incredibly well.
* GoodCopBadCop: Plays the Bad Cop in the first episode, criticizing Ruby's reckless attack of Torchwick in the middle of a built-up area and scaring her by smacking the table next to her hand with her whip. She introduces Ozpin via an implication that the only reason she's not going to send Ruby home in disgrace is because Ozpin wants to talk to her, setting him up as the "friendly cop" before he's even entered the room. This allows him to ply her full of cookies to soften the fact he's interrogating her personality before offering her a place at his academy.
* GoodIsNotNice: She's definitely a good guy but she's also cold, standoffish, and a strict disciplinarian.
* HotTeacher: Looks to be a 100% prim and proper HotLibrarian, but [[{{Dominatrix}} there's the matter of that riding crop wand]]... It also makes her a HotWitch.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: She's very cold and proper, and a powerful sorceress who can control the weather and use telekinesis to send debris flying at enemies.
* LittleNo: In "Battle for Beacon", she lets out a quiet "No..." while she and Qrow are stopped cold by a shockwave resonating throughout Vale, having realized that its source is a massive, dragon-like Grimm kept shut within Mountain Glenn.
* MagicWand: Which looks a lot like a teacher's pointer and can be used like a riding crop.
* MeaningfulName: Her name is an obvious reference to [[Literature/TheWonderfulWizardOfOz Glinda the Good Witch]].
* MindOverMatter: Her Semblance. She can levitate a large number of objects and put them together however she likes.
* OjouRinglets: As far as we know, she is not from a regal background, she is a Huntress (which is a pretty high standing) and it's only to one side. Her symbol is a tiara, too.
* PerpetualFrowner: Fitting her stern nature, she's frowning by default and even snarling when there's trouble brewing.
* PrimAndProperBun: Compared to Ozpin's laid-back attitude and amused tolerance for Ruby's ditzy behavior, she's stern, restrained and seems as frustrated by Ozpin's attitude as by Ruby's. Even her kindness is stern: when she compliments Ruby, her tone of voice is firm and professional and is quickly followed by a reprimand.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Her cape and the magic sigils that appear when she's casting spells are all colored purple, and she's performed the most impressive feats of magic shown thus far.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Much less forgiving of Ruby's vigilantism in the first episode than Professor Ozpin, though not to an unreasonable degree, saying that Ruby should be commended for foiling the robbery but also reprimanded for behaving in such a foolhardy manner. She also [[SternTeacher bluntly states that Jaune is not ready for the level of combat required out of concern for him]].
* StatuesqueStunner: According to the [[http://bearshounen.tumblr.com/post/97365865939/montys-posted-the-cast-of-rwbys-height-chart height chart]], Glynda is about six and half feet tall. Even if you remove her heels, she's well over six feet. She also rocks various HotLibrarian and HotTeacher looks.
* StraightMan: By far the more calmer and collected of the female characters, her default expression and attitude is remaining focused and keeping the authority around Beacon Academy. She's thus irritated at any kind of disorder.
* SurveillanceAsThePlotDemands: Has an [=iPad=]-like device (called a "Scroll" in-universe) that captured Ruby's battle with the Mobsters even though Glynda was nowhere to be seen. It shows her every student in the exam, even close up, and not one of them notices it. It's [[ShoutOut another reference]] to Literature/TheWonderfulWizardOfOz; Glinda the Good had a magic book that recorded everything that happened in Oz.
* TranquilFury: On more than one occasion, Glynda is seen to be barely containing herself from lashing out, but still manages to act with the utmost composure.
** When Glynda marches into the dining hall after the FoodFight, she gives off a small growl upon seeing the state of the room. However, instead of exploding at the perpetrators, she chastises them in a firm, disappointed tone.
--->'''Glynda:''' Children. ''Please...'' Do not play with your food.
** After the successive interventions of Team JNPR, the Atlesian Military, and Team CFVY against the Grimm invading Vale, Glynda shows up, furiously strolling towards the breach and silently wiping out Grimm [[OffhandBackhand without even looking at them]], before sealing the breach within seconds.
* WeatherManipulation: She can summon a dark storm cloud that rains down ice spikes.
* WhipItGood: Glynda carries a riding crop which acts as both a wand and a means to intimidate her listeners when she needs to punctuate her words for emphasis. Coupled with her messy bun, glasses, stern demeanour, cleavage-exposing pencil-thin dress and knee-high boots, her entire appearance carries a dominatrix overtone.
* WizardDuel: With Cinder; it involved transforming not themselves, but debris scattered from previous attacks.

[[folder:Peter Port]]
!!Professor Peter Port
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peter_port.png]]
[[caption-width-right:300:''"Yes, the creatures of Grimm have many names. But I merely refer to them as prey!"'']]
->'''Voiced By:''' Ryan Haywood [EN], Soichi Abe [JP]

->''"A true Huntsman must be honorable! A true Huntsman must be dependable! A true Huntsman must be strategic, well-educated, and wise!"''

A professor and former Huntsman at Beacon Academy who lectures about the Grimm.
----
* AbsurdPhobia: Port tries to give Yang a life lesson in handling fear; he mentions that even he sometimes gets afraid from time to time. Oobleck ruins the lesson by explaining that Port is actually terrified of mice. At first, Port tries to point out that they are causes of disease and famine, but is forced to admit that it's the hairless tails in particular that freak him out.
-->"They bring only disease and famine! And don't even get me started on their tails! So hairless, it's simply unnatural."
* AlliterativeName: '''P'''eter '''P'''ort.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Asks Weiss one when she tells him that she felt she should have been named team leader:
-->"So the outcome didn't fall in your favor. Do you really believe that acting in such a manner would cause those in power to reconsider their decision?
* BackToBackBadass: Port and Oobleck stand back to back before fighting a hoard of Griffins. They later come out of the fight unscathed.
* BadassMustache: He was an heroic huntsman in his youth capable of saving an entire village single-handedly and his mustache is almost as large as his tales!
* BigFun: A rotund - though short - gentleman who's really rather jovial. Even his approach to the dire threat of the Grimm is about having fun: he views hunting Grimm as a sport.
* BigOlEyebrows: To attenuate his lack of visible eyes.
* BloodKnight: When you consider the creatures of Grimm to be nothing but ''prey'', you qualify as one.
* BlahBlahBlah: Heard when telling his story (much of which is heard during when Ruby is making fun of him). It kicks in while the camera's on people who aren't listening.
-->'''Mysterious Narrator:''' To further complicate study, the corpse of a Grimm will only remain for a short period of time before completely evaporating. Those who hunt the beasts for sport find this particularly upsetting, but manage to get by with cheap taxidermic recreations and bombastic storytelling.
* TheBore: In his class for the first time, Ruby finds it very difficult to pay attention to his speech which is heard as BlahBlahBlah when she zones out. In Volume 2, he's still at it in the background while Weiss watches a clock that counts down to the end of the lesson and Jaune is more interested in flirting than learning. The second the bell goes at 4pm, all the students in the class flee the room, leaving Port's speech to trundle to a reluctant halt.
* CombatCommentator: Along with Ooblek for the Vytal tournament. He seems to be there to provide play by play and color commentary.
* CoolTeacher: He initially comes across as trying too hard to be funny and interesting to be either, let alone cool. Later, he turns out to be extremely perceptive, wise and genuinely helpful when addressing Weiss's leadership issues.
%% * DirtyOldMan: He briefly hits on Yang, which creeps her out.
* EyesAlwaysShut: His eyes are usually drawn as closed slits which gives him a jovial appearance, but they do widen into being visible when he's startled or worried.
* FanDisservice: A pretty quick shot showing his belly bouncing.
* GreatWhiteHunter: Back when he was a Huntsman, as he described it, he's a very enthusiastic man who likes challenge and showing his achievements.
%% * LargeHam: Speaks, especially when teaching, in a large, bombastic manner.
* MeaningfulName: "Peter" is derived from the Greek word "Petros", meaning "stone", indicating the grey color of his hair and mustache. "Port" as a surname is from the Old French "[=LaPotre=]" meaning "the door", and the family was charged with protecting the gates of fortified cities or large and unique doors. Furthermore, he is a bit on the portly side.
* NoodleIncident: The story of how he captured a Beowolf in his youth is glossed over by the episode to reflect the fact the kids aren't paying attention. The one bit that is focused on is that his grandfather, despite smelling of cabbages, was a wise man. While his grandfather was referenced because his wise advice was relevant to the tale even though the kids don't listen to it, the story behind the unfortunate smell isn't even hinted at.
* PornStache: His handlebar mustache is so large it completely swamps his mouth and cheeks.
* SherlockScan: Is able to tell a great deal about Weiss' personality within an hour of meeting her. He then deconstructs her attitude so hard, she becomes willing to make coffee for Ruby and bury the hatchet with her.
* ShoutOut: The background music playing during ''Peter'' Port's story of his fight with a Beowulf is from Prokofiev's children's tale, "Music/PeterAndTheWolf".
* SwissArmyWeapon: An axe that doubles as a blunderbuss -- whose trigger is ''right between the two axe blades''.
* UndyingLoyalty: Firmly declares that he's been following Ozpin for years and holds the man's decisions and leadership in esteem.
%% WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: He has an intense fear of [[spoiler: mice]], of all things. In his words, "They bring only disease and famine!" And don't get him started on those ''unnaturally'' hairless tails....

[[folder:Dr. Bartholomew Oobleck]]
!!Doctor Bartholomew Oobleck
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bart_oobleck.png]]
[[caption-width-right:300:''"As a teacher, I can take knowledge -- the most powerful weapon of them all -- and place it into the hands of every student that passes through my classroom."'']]
->'''Voiced by:''' Joel Heyman [EN], Yuichi Karasuma [JP]

->''"History is important, gentlemen! If you can't learn from it... you're destined to repeat it."''

A professor who teaches history, such as the ancient wars and the civil rights struggles of the Faunus. Apparently he has a [=PhD=].
----
* AdventurerOutfit: He owns a classic adventurer outfit, complete with pith helmet. Despite his scruffy appearance during lecturers and even at the ball, when he wears this outfit, he's impeccably dressed. Not even his tie is askew.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: In season 2 episode 9 he asks Yang, Weiss, and Blake why they became huntresses. At first they give him simple answers but later they realize that maybe they didn't give enough thought before answering.
* BackToBackBadass: Oobleck and Port stand back to back before facing a hoard of Griffins. They're later seen after the fight unscathed.
* BadassTeacher: On top of his tenure as a history teacher at Beacon Academy, team RWBY finds out that he's the Huntsman they're assigned to. He can wipe the floor with several Atlesian Paladins while he and team RWBY are pursuing Torchwick in "No Brakes", and reassures his students that he can take care of the rest as they try to stop the train.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Oobleck is hyperactive, goofy, caffeine addicted, and seems just a little bit off. Don't let that fool you, because even if he favors knowledge he's still a trained huntsman employed at Beacon and will wipe the floor with your ass.
* CharacterTics: He conducts himself in a very twitchy, sharp fashion, speaks rapidly and gestures with his finger when making points.
* CombatCommentator: Along with Port during the Vytal Tournament. He seems to be the analyst, who explains things to the crowd such as Nora's semblance.
%% * DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: "According to my schedule we are already three minutes behind...schedule."
* FlashStep: He is capable of moving so fast that he can appear to be almost teleporting. His lectures can be hard for his students to keep up with and he zips around the lecture theatre so fast, the students can barely keep their eyes on him.
* IncrediblyLamePun: As an announcer, Dr. Oobleck has made two puns while commentating. He refers to Team SSN's victory as [[ShockAndAwe "shocking"]] and announce's Flynt's knock out with the phrase, "Sour note for Flynt!"
* InsistentTerminology: He is ''Doctor'' Oobleck, he didn't get his [=PhD=] for fun after all.
* LargeHam: His MotorMouth tendencies allow him to chew out Weiss without retaliation, and he momentarily gets caught up in fascination once he sees Zwei emerge from Ruby's backpack.
* MessyHair: His hair has a windswept appearance as befitting his disheveled appearance and constantly swift movements.
* MotorMouth: He conducts his lectures at lightning-speed, being able to convey a lot of information very quickly. Even during casual conversation he tends to speak quickly, but can slow down if he has to.
* MrExposition: This is what he was designed for. The reason for all his quirks is to allow him to deliver a large amount of backstory without it being a standard boring {{Infodump}}.
* MustHaveCaffeine: Is shown guzzling cup after cup of coffee during his lecture. Implied to be a [[CaffeineBulletTime contributing factor]] to his constant motion and his swiftly-running sentences.
* OpaqueLenses: His glasses are a constant, unchanging white. Unlike most examples of this trope, CheatedAngle is not in effect, as Oobleck's eyes are perfectly visible when his profile is observed from the side.
* PlayingWithFire: His thermos (appropriately) changes into a [[FireBreathingWeapon flamethrower]] that hurls out massive fireballs and [[HavingABlast blows up anything it hits]]. Funnily enough, it's used to [[BatterUp smack Zwei around]], [[FastballSpecial turning him into a high-speed fireball]] that knocks out an Atlesian Paladin.
* ScienceHero: He admits to Ruby that being a Huntsman doesn't necessarily mean kicking tons of ass, but at the same he tells her that his knowledge of fauna is extremely valuable in the long run; knowledge that can save far more lives than simply being a warrior.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: Puts Blake, Weiss, and Yang through one of these in "Search And Destroy". By innocuously asking each why they decided to become Huntresses, Oobleck manages to probe into their psyches and get them to reconsider their own motivations and respective reasons for coming to Beacon. The briefly-sign smile on his face when he hears them discussing the question around the campfire says it all.
* SeriouslyScruffy: He has an untidy look (mismatched shoes, untucked shirt, unfastened tie, MessyHair) and only stops [[FlashStep rushing around]] to take a [[MustHaveCaffeine swig of coffee]]. He's appropriately [[MotorMouth enthusiastic]] (and yet [[HistoryRepeats serious]]) about history. He only dresses neatly when he puts on his AdventurerOutfit.
* ShoutOut: His name comes from the Creator/DrSeuss story ''Bartholomew and the Oobleck''.
%% * StringTheory: His pegboard is arranged this way.
* SuperSpeed: He is capable of incredible speed, and will sometimes use it even for mundane events like leaving lectures where his departure is little more than a blur of motion.
* UtilityWeapon: The flamethrower/club he fights with is also a perfectly functional thermos, presumably filled with [[MustHaveCaffeine more coffee]].
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: He has shaggy green hair.

!!Team CRDL

[[folder:CRDL as a Group]]
!!Team CRDL

Another team of first years in Beacon Academy. Pronounced 'cardinal'.
----
* AnimalMotif: Along with the team name's reference to a bird, each member of CRDL has a name referencing a bird. Cardin, Russel, and Dove even have birds emblazoned upon their chest armor, bracers and belt respectively.
* DirtyCoward: Cardin's teammates desert him when he is attacked by an Ursa. Cardin himself cowers when the creature disarms him.
* GangOfBullies: And as is typical for the trope, their tough-guy act and support for their leader evaporates the moment they meet something bigger than they are: a big, BIG Ursa.
* {{Jerkass}}: All four of them: Cardin is shown actively being a bully to Jaune and Velvet in Episode 11, and during the tormenting of Velvet, the other three are laughing it up. Russel even calls Velvet a [[FantasticRacism freak]] because of her status as a [[LittleBitBeastly Faunus]].
* MuggingTheMonster: They make a point of picking on Velvet in Volume 1. They likely don't realize at the time that she's actually their senior and thus more experienced.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Monty and Miles describe them as this on the DVDCommentary; they're not ''bad'' fighters by any stretch - Russel and Dove even get some nice tag-team work in, and even make it to the second round of the Tournament - it's just that the only person we've seen them fight as of Volume 2 is [[TheAce Pyrrha]], followed by [[ImplacableMan Penny]] in Volume 3.
* OutOfFocus: After Volume 1, their screentime goes down the drain, with the exception of the fight against Pyrrha. Russel and Sky get less than two minutes of screentime in "Never Miss A Beat", and are only there to get obliterated by Penny. It isn't until the eleventh episode of Volume 3 that Cardin (alone) appears at all, for a few seconds before the scene switches to Ironwood.
* PunnyName: The members of Team Cardinal are all named after birds, as is their team name. However, the team came together because both pairs chose black bishops and a cardinal is a senior ecclesiastical rank that is given to ordained bishops. At least three members of the team are wearing armor similar to medieval church knights, and Christian folklore believes that the cardinal bird is blood red because it's stained with the blood of Christ. The bird was named after the ecclesiastical rank, which is represented by the color red.
* SatelliteCharacter: Aside from Cardin, all of them. They are never seen without their leader, and aside from being lazy jerks, don't stand out much. Russel fares slightly better than Dove and Lark since he has his own voice actor.
%% * SuperReflexes: They are all capable of dodging and parrying gunfire.
* SymbolMotifClothing:
** Cardin Winchester's chest armor has a bird emblazoned upon it, and Dove Bronzewing wears a dove symbol on his belt buckle. Russel's bracers each have his thrush symbol on them.
** Episode 13 ends with Jaune throwing a jar of red sap which stains Cardin's armor, turning the bird blood-red; the cardinal bird is blood-red and Christian folklore states the bird turned blood-red when stained by the blood of Christ.

->'''Voiced By:''' Adam Ellis [EN], Creator/SubaruKimura [JP]

The leader of Team CRDL.
----
* AssholeVictim: Cardin becomes one in "Forever Fall", when an Ursa shows up, and smells the sap that Jaune threw on him in the previous episode. He ends up getting saved by the latter, with some subtle help from Pyrrha.
* BadBoss: Cardin's LeeroyJenkins style broke up any organized attack in their organized match against Pyrrha; including hitting Dove in the face with his mace in a FoeTossingCharge.
* {{Blackmail}}: Cardin implies, then later states, that he will reveal Jaune's DarkSecret if he doesn't do his homework for him.
* BreakTheHaughty: After being attacked by an enormous Ursa, Cardin tries to defend himself, but is quickly defeated. Jaune saves his life and earns his respect, after which all mention of blackmailing goes silent.
* TheBully: His team's EstablishingCharacterMoment is them bullying Velvet, where Cardin enjoys yanking Velvet's rabbit ears. He also ruthlessly bullies Jaune and blackmails Jaune into being his skivvy once he learns Jaune's secret. When Pyrrha shows up Cardin is class, he seeks revenge by forcing Jaune to collect a box full of rapier wasps as part of an elaborate plan to attack Pyrrha. He only stops bullying Jaune when Jaune saves him from a giant Ursa.
* CarryABigStick: Cardin's WeaponOfChoice is an ornate flanged mace with a central gem, to further his "Bishop" theme.
* CombatPragmatist: Knees Jaune in the chest while engaged in a [[BladeLock Weapon Lock]] with him, and tries to ambush Pyrrha while she's distracted by his teammates.
* DisproportionateRetribution: How does Cardin want to get back at Pyrrha for snarking at him an episode earlier? ''By letting loose a bunch of "nasty" rapier wasps to attack her''.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment:
** Cardin's vicious assault on Jaune in a spar (''"This is the part where you lose"'') requires Glynda's intervention to prevent Jaune from being seriously hurt. His reaction to her comment about not wanting serious injuries is "Speak for yourself". When his entire team is introduced by bullying Velvet, it's confirmed the entire team is like this, not just Cardin.
* FantasticRacism: Cardin's attempt to explain the victories of the Faunus in war as [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman it being easier to train an animal than a human]] (with Velvet being there, too) before Pyrrha and Blake shut him up.
* FriendOrFoe: In Team CRDL's fight against Pyrrha, Cardin strikes his mace against the ground to produce a shockwave toward Pyrrha... and hits Dove when he raises his mace. Dove's out for the rest of the fight.
* HammerSpace: How else does Cardin suddenly brandish his mace while sitting up from getting knocked down by the Ursa?
* HavingABlast: He can generates what's essentially a wave of explosions by slamming his mace on the ground.
* JerkJock: Cardin is the leader of his group and the one shown bullying other students.
* KubrickStare: Cardin's glare turns into this at the closing of Episode 11.
* LargeAndInCharge: Cardin's the tallest of the team and the leader.
* MeaningfulName: [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Beaufort Henry Beaufort]], the '''Cardin'''al Bishop of '''Winchester''', presided over the trial and execution of Joan of Arc, further supporting this is the relic selected by their team: the [[ChessMotifs Black Bishop]].
* ShoutOut: The gem in his mace is a crystal of fire Dust which connects to his ecclesiastical basis and its preferred method of execution by immolation.
* TheSlacker: [[{{Jerkass}} Asshole type]]. He makes it clear he doesn't intend to do any actual work when he decides to blackmail Jaune to do it for him.
* SmugSnake: Acts like a tough guy when he feels safe, torments other students and makes their lives as miserable as possible just for fun, tries to make Pyrrha suffer from rapier wasp stings by having Jaune hit her with a jarful of sap, and does it all with an arrogant smirk on his face... Yeah, this guy's a snake.
* SoreLoser: Cardin squeezes out claiming "Lucky shot." in volume 2, chapter 5 before conking out after Pyrrha beats Team CDRL with nary a hit landed against her.
* SpinToDeflectStuff: As implausible as it sounds, he just needs to twirl his mace in order to deflect Pyrrha's rifle shots. With its ''tip''.
* TermsOfEndangerment: Cardin acts rather "kind" to Jaune after finding out his DarkSecret, calling him his "buddy" and "Jaunny-Boy". This is not seen as comforting in the slightest.
* ThisIsThePartWhere: Cardin pulls this phrase on Jaune at the end of their full contact combat training session. Professor Goodwitch has to intervene to prevent Cardin injuring Jaune too badly.
-->'''Cardin''': This is the part where you lose.
* TookALevelInBadass: One-shots an Ursa Major in Volume 3, showing that he ''has'' improved.
* VocalDissonance: Cardin is a big, bulky guy[[note]]going by Jaune's official height of 6'1, Cardin's easily around 6'4" or taller[[/note]], leading one to expect him having a deep, intimidating voice. In actuality however, Cardin has a fairly very high-pitched, almost nasally-sounding voice.

* FantasticRacism: He calls Velvet (a rabbit [[LittleBitBeastly Faunus]]) a freak for her ears.
* RollingAttack: He performs a triple somersault before planting his feet against Pyrrha's shield.

* EyesAlwaysShut: He has actually opened his eyes... once.
* FriendOrFoe: Is subject to this when Cardin hits him by mistake in a sparring match between Team CRDL and Pyrrha. Dove isn't seen for the rest of the fight, so Cardin must have knocked him out.

->''I'm a bad dream, I'm a rad scene, I'm a tad mean, but I'm not afraid to take you out!'' -- (Excerpt from CFVY's theme song, Caffeine)

The team of AscendedExtra Velvet Scarlatina, Team CFVY (pronounced 'Coffee') is comprised of upper years regularly sent on Huntsman missions under the supervision of Professor Port.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Coco, Fox, and Yatsuhashi's last names were revealed on the [=RWBY=] wiki by Monty's wife.
* TheCavalry: The standard cavalry in case the Beacon students are in trouble. They come to save the city from the Grimm attack in the finale of Volume 2, doing whatever team RWBY and JNPR combined can't do.
* ColorMotif: Going by the original silhouettes, each member of the team has a color theme that fits their team name: Coffee.
* DestructiveSavior: They don't pull any punches when it comes to neutralizing the invading Grimm in "Breach". Yatsuhashi shatters the very ground he's on when he unleashes his sword, Fox leaves grimm-shrapnel everywhere after exploding one, and Coco's minigun similarly riddles the plaza with craters; when the Giant Nevermores are shot down, their corpses can be seen scattering debris around their landing point.
* EdibleThemeNaming: (Hot) Coco(a), Fox (Hunter Pie), (Red) Velvet (Cake), Yatsuhashi... Japanese sweet made with bean paste. Not counting the fact that the entire team's name comes together to sound out "Coffee".

->'''Voiced by:''' Ashley Jenkins [EN], Creator/ShizukaIto [JP]

The leader of Velvet's team and fellow Beacon Academy student.
----
* AsLethalAsItNeedsToBe: In Volume 2's finale, Coco's bullets literally shredded armored opponents and massive enemies such as Nevermores, and reduced the surroundings to chaos. This in large part is why CFVY qualifies for DestructiveSavior. However, during her match with Mercury and Emerald, her bullets did little more than mow down grass. When shot into the field full of not-very-big trees, her gatling gun failed to destroy any of them, and otherwise would have been a decent way to remove Emerald from her cover - apparently, she was using different, weaker rounds for the tournament.
* BadassBandolier: Firmly establishes the gap between first years and upper years by keeping a cool and deadpan attitude even in the midst of a Grimm invasion, kicking ass with rather mundane moves, and whipping out a minigun that easily dispatches the larger Grimm, leaving destruction in her wake. Her minigun functions by virtue of her belt and the strap on her carrying case being adorned with powerful bullets.
* BriefcaseBlaster: Her handbag can transform into a gatling gun.
%%* ChivalrousPervert: A rare female example. She actually slaps Fox's butt after he rips through a group of Grimm.
* CombatStilettos: Her extremely fashionable combat clothing consist of studs, belts and very high heels.
* CoolShades: The aspect of her character first noticed ever since she was a wee silhouette.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Behind her shades, it's seen that her eyes are as brown as her hair. {{Subverted|Trope}} in her fight against Mercury and Emerald, in which her eyes are darker due to the lighting.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Her skirt seems to cut to one side and a mysterious strap dangles near her left knee. Her hair also sports a side plait on the right that's orange instead of brown.
* TheFashionista: Fashion seems to be a quirk of hers, given she dresses stylishly, beats the crap out of Grimm that destroyed her favorite clothing store, and compliments Emerald's gunslinger getup before they fight. The fans cheering in the stands for her are also all wearing the same NiceHat, implying that's her style's what she's known for.
* GatlingGood: Her purse transforms into a minigun that's at least as big as she is, and the bullets used are powerful enough rip through a Deathstalker's armour, as well as shoot down Giant Nevermores, one of which ends up ''bifurcated''. However, tournament opponents Mercury and Emerald show the problem with her fighting style. They're agile enough to dodge the rounds and get in close--at one point, she almost fires at her partner by mistake and shuts down the gun for a while as a result.
* GirlyBruiser: Likes clothes? Check. Hates it when said clothes or the places she acquires them are destroyed? Check. Fights with a big honking minigun? Check.
* GroinAttack: Her first on-screen kill is a huge Beowolf she kicks in the nuts, then lets it ''feel the pain'' for a few seconds, before finishing it with a good whack from her handbag.
* TheGunslinger: Goes "The Vaporizer" route with a rotary minigun. Emerald and Mercury backing off and hiding in high grass? No problem! Just mow it.
* HammerSpace: Her purse, which is at best one cubic foot, transforms into a ''minigun''.
* HandbagOfHurt: Beats a few Grimm to death with her purse before changing it into her minigun. Considering that it has the same mass as her minigun in a much smaller space, it's really not surprising.
* InTheBack: Emerald chooses not to fight Coco face-to-face. She hides in the trees, using ambush tactics where Coco's powerful mini-gun is rendered ineffective. While Coco is left distracted and confused, Emerald is able to sneak up behind Coco and defeat with a strike from her blade.
* ItsPersonal: When she finds her shades smashed on the ground, she quickly gets serious on what could've been a friendly rivalry with Emerald.
* TheLeader: Coco commands the actions of her teammates. She decides what they do and don't do in battle and their actions and decisions are arranged around what she herself does. During the Volume 2 finale, she forbids Velvet from using her weapon, knowing that the rest of the team can handle the Grimm that have invaded the city. During the Volume 3 finale, Velvet does not touch her weapon even though everyone is struggling against the Atlesian Robots until Coco gives her the order to act. Velvet indicates to Ruby that the team has enormous respect for Coco when she mentions that if even Coco can experience stress-induced hallucinations in battle, then no-one is immune.
* LongRangeFighter: Fights mainly at a longer range with her gatling bag, and shows some difficulty when opponents close in on her.
* MusclesAreMeaningless: Swings her handbag Gatling gun around like it's nothing despite its full size being a good bit larger than she is.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Given that she's an ActionFashionista with a BobHaircut, her name seems to reference Coco Chanel.
* NervesOfSteel: In comparison to her teammates, Coco treats the Grimm invasion as barely worth her notice, beating around Grimm with a handbag after staring down and calmly talking to a Beowulf twice her size.
* NiceHat: She always wears a beret. During the tournament, her fans in the audience are identifiable because they wear the same style beret as she.
* PrepareToDie: Says it word for word in Vol.2 Episode 12 before going to town on an especially large Beowolf.
-->'''Coco:''' ''[to a large Beowolf]'' You just destroyed my favorite clothing store. PrepareToDie.
%%* ShoutOut: Her name and stylish attire make many a fan think of Coco Chanel.
* TheSlowWalk: When CFVY makes their entry into the battle, Velvet and Fox speed off forward, Yatsuhashi stays to clear the Grimm gathering around, and Coco simply takes a casual strut while the rest of her team is fighting. When she does enter the fray, Fox backs off so a large Beowolf can know exactly ''why'' she's taking her sweet time.
* SpitefulSpit: After pointing out a giant Beowolf destroyed her favourite clothing store, she spits off to the side before declaring that it was going to die.
* StatuesqueStunner: Even when the average height in Vale is higher than the real world, Coco is the second tallest woman after Glynda, with her teammate Velvet being one head shorter than her. She's also a walking wardrobe of cool, with a casual attitude towards her team.
* UtilityBelt: Both her belt and the strap on her carrying case are adorned with bullets. Pretty powerful ones too, able to tear through armored foes like the Death Stalker and Nevermore, which teams JNPR + RWBY couldn't pierce with traditional rounds, respectively.
* TheWorfEffect: Serves as the Worf to Mercury and Emerald, to show how dangerous the new foes are now that they're on the field and how easily they can take out someone as strong as she.
* {{Zipperiffic}}: Her black trousers have several pockets around the waist, as well as many zippers around the knees.

!!Fox Alistair
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fox_alistair.png]]

A member of Velvet's team and fellow Beacon Academy student.
----
* AnimalThemeNaming: His black, orange and brown colour themes, from his hair to his skin and his black-legged, orange-bodied clothing, are reminiscent of the colour scheme of a red fox.
* BladeBelowTheShoulder: His weapons are a pair of wrist-mounted blades which extend past his elbows. He combines his punches with several slashes from these blades.
* BoringButPractical: His weapons are nothing special, but between his manipulation of Aura and apparent hand-to-hand combat skills, a pair of wrist blades can do just as much damage as any other student's weapon.
* CoveredWithScars: Most of his arms are covered in scars and there's also a vertical scar running down the left side of his mouth.
* DarkSkinnedRedhead: His skin is a deep reddish-brown shade, not much different in colour to his brownish-red hair. It contributes to his overall fox-themed colouration.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: In addition to the multitude of scars on his arms, he has a very thin one on the right side of his lips.
* MonochromaticEyes: His eyes are solid white. There's no evidence of differentiation between sclera, irises or pupils.
* PowerFist: His blades have large metal plates that extend past his arm and seem to serve as knuckle dusters.
* SleevesAreForWimps: Wears what appears to be a sleeveless vest, which shows that his arms are covered in scars.
* UtilityBelt: Has three pouches visibly attached to his belt.

->'''Voiced By:''' Caiti Ward [EN], Creator/MegumiHan [JP]

->''There's a moment that changes a life when we do something that no one else can\\
And the path that we've taken will lead us: One final stand''

A rabbit Faunus attending Beacon Academy. Creator/MontyOum held a contest where fans got to decide what her battle gear design would be. According to Monty, she is an experienced mage for her team and is very agile.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: She's really enthusiastic about her photography and at one point apologizes, embarrassed, to Ruby after snapping a photo of her when she wasn't expecting it. And when Coco ''finally'' gives her permission to use her PowerCopying, she immediately gets excited.
* AllYourPowersCombined: During the assault on Beacon by several Paladins, Velvet mimics and utilizes the forms of every named student weapon except for Stormflower, Crocea Mors, and Milo and Akouo. Despite a large group of students working together, they can't bring them down. Velvet's use of everyone's abilities enables her to take out two Paladins single-handedly.
* AnimalMotif: Her animal side is a brown rabbit, and her eyes are animated a little differently to give her a wide, dark, doe-eyed expression reminiscent of a BunniesForCuteness style.
* AscendedExtra: Originally just a character device to exemplify the discrimination against Faunus. Positive fan response resulted in her receiving an actual role in the series.
* BadassAdorable: She's an adorable little bunny-person with a knack for photography, however lousy she seems at it. And with her PowerCopying, she can solo two Atlesian Paladins that were giving all of FNKI, CVFY, SSSN, and ABRN the fight of their lives. It's convincing enough for her team leader, Coco, to not worry about Velvet getting hurt.
* BullyingADragon: Sure, she's soft-spoken and gentle and obviously self-conscious about her status as a Faunus, and she lets Cardin and his gang pull her around by the ears and is visibly upset by it...but she's a second-year student, with an incredible amount of experience under her belt. And even if that wasn't true, she had to pass the same rigorous combat exam as every other Beacon student just to get in. Just because she tolerates schoolyard bullying from [[RealityEnsues someone she has to live with for the next several years]] and presumably doesn't want to be looking over her shoulder for that entire time, doesn't mean she ''[[BewareTheNiceOnes has to]]''.
** Not to mention the rest of CFVY, ''all'' of whom have demonstrated that Velvet is [[BigBrotherInstinct particularly]] [[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend precious]] to them, whether the viewer interprets that as platonic or romantic for any specific teammate.
* CameraFiend: Velvet will take photos at any opportunity, even when on the battlefield. Her photographs don't look very good to the people around her; when she shows Ruby a photograph she has taken of Sun, the photograph only captures Sun's abs and weapon, completely cutting off his head. Ruby politely mentions it's much better than previous photos. The camera is her weapon; by photographing weapons, she gains the ability to create one-off HardLight copies. In combination with her Semblance, which allows her to perfectly mimic anyone's fighting styles, she can fight in any style, and with any weapon, she chooses. However, once she runs out of photographs, she has to take new ones to "reload". As a result, she [[TooAwesomeToUse doesn't use her weapon unless she absolutely has to.]]
* DittoFighter: Her weapon can produce copies of other people's weapons, apparently by taking photographs of them, and then use those weapons with similar skill to the original users' thanks to her Semblance.
* HardLight: Her replicated weapons have the appearance of blue wireframes, projected from her camera box. According to the design notes in the credits, the weapons and all associated extras are ''literally'' hard light.
* ItOnlyWorksOnce: Coco's comments imply that her ability only works once per picture, so once she uses a copied skill she will need to take another picture in order to use it again. This was later confirmed during a stream by the creators, in addition to each weapon copy having a short life.
* KickChick: The few hits she got in during the attack on Vale were all kick based.
* LittleBitBeastly: Being a rabbit Faunus, she has a pair of long rabbit ears, which are [[{{Jerkass}} pulled on by Cardin]] in her first appearance. She possesses a pair of human ears, too.
* LongLostUncleAesop: Velvet's originally intended role, but as noted above, her instant popularity resulted in her becoming a reoccurring character.
%% * NiceGirl: After Yang's televised debacle, she's one of the few people outside RWBY and JNPR who shows concern for the troubled girl, also expressing disgust at [[HeroWithBadPublicity all the horrible things people are saying about her]].
* PossessionImpliesMastery: Averted. It's not quite HowDoIShootWeb because she ''does'' wield the weapons she summons with similar skill to their original owners, but as far as damage output goes, they fail to pack quite as much punch as the originals do, and Velvet has to cycle through all of them to put down two Atlesian Paladins. For example, the mimic of Penny's massive beam, which utterly obliterated two dropships in the first volume, fails to destroy a Paladin in front of her, although it is strong enough to keep it down. She also seems to explicitly target weak points when she does this, implying she knows the limits of this ability.
* PowerCopying: Her Semblance allows her to mimic the moves of the owners of the weapons she replicates with her weapon. It seems to be connected to her pictures, and it's implied that she can only use these abilities once for a short period of time, after which she'll have to spend time rebuilding her repertoire.
* {{Protectorate}}: Seems to be this for Yatsuhashi. Velvet specifically stated that she wasn't worried during their mission because Yatsuhashi was there to protect her. When Fox caused massive amounts of debris to fly everywhere, Velvet stepped closer to Yatsuhashi, who in turn shielded her with his armored arm.
%% * RapunzelHair: Her long, sleek brown hair flows past her hips, and is worn loose. It's like Yang's, but less messy.
%% * ShrinkingViolet: She's hesitant to even raise her hand in class.
* ShoutOut: Her name, rabbit ears, and brown coloration are a reference to ''Literature/TheVelveteenRabbit''.
* TightsUnderShorts: In keeping with her modest, modern sense of style (described by Monty), Velvet's combat attire includes a pair of short brown shorts with tights underneath.
* TooAwesomeToUse: She carries her weapon in a box that is attached to her waist. When she goes to use it against the Grimm that are overrunning the city, Coco tells her not to bother because it would be a waste to use it at that moment. In ''Destiny'' it's revealed she keeps her camera in there and she's practicing her apparently lousy photography skills. "Heroes and Monsters" reveals that her camera ''is'' her weapon. She takes pictures of people to use for her power-mimic style. The reason it falls under this is because she can only use each weapon/style for a few seconds, and she won't be able to use it again until she takes another picture.

[[caption-width-right:300:''"I can't promise you'll leave without a scratch."'']]
->'''Voiced By:''' Joe Macdonald

A Beacon Academy student, he is the tallest member of team CFVY and one of the tallest characters in the entire show.
----
* AudibleSharpness: As soon as he takes his sword off his back and readies up for an attack, a resonating echo can be heard.
* BadassBaritone: As the largest Beacon student observed, Yatsuhashi has a deep, overbearing voice, and he displays some impressive feats of pure strength, chief amongst them being massive {{shockwave stomp}}s.
* {{BFS}}: His WeaponOfChoice is a giant, bronze curved sword almost as tall as he is..
* FashionableAsymmetry: The shoulder armor on his left arm has no counterpart on his right.
%% * GentleGiant: He's the tallest character according to the official height chart, more so than Junior, and Velvet makes an offhand comment on how Yatsuhashi looked after her during team CFVY's mission. He's shown to shield her with his arm when some debris nearly hits her.
* MusclesAreMeaningful: Yatsuhashi is one of the tallest and most muscled characters, and is correspondingly strong. When the Paladins cause trouble for everyone, Yatsuhashi stops one by halting its punch and holding it in place.
* OffWithHisHead: He and Sage team up to decapitate the Nevermore that is attacking Ruby and Pyrrha.
* OneHandedZweihander: Despite his sword being nearly as big as he is, he still is capable of swinging it with one hand in both a standard grip and ReverseGrip. It increases the speed of his fights.
* ShockwaveStomp: By slamming his sword into the ground, he's able to send a dangerous wave of energy through the ground. It can destroy the ground, create tremors, set off geysers, and sends enemies flying. He uses it against both Grimm and tournament opponents.
* ShoutOut: Creator/MontyOum tweeted a picture of Yatsuhashi Kengyo to resolve the mystery of CFVY's fourth member.
* SimpleYetAwesome: His weapon? A giant sword, nothing more, nothing less. The awesome part comes from his strength and techniques he uses with the blade, whether it be with one hand or a reverse grip.
* SkintoneSclerae: His dusky skin is part of his Japanese theme, but the whites of his eyes are the same colour as his skin.
* TeensAreShort: Most of the teenagers have reasonable heights, but are dwarfed by most of the adults being unusually tall. Yatsuhashi is the exception; at 7'0" tall, he averts the trope and is the tallest character in the show.
* WeaponAcrossTheShoulder: When Team CFVY is done wiping out the Grimm in the plaza, Yatsuhashi can be seen strolling around with his sword in this manner, though his weapon is normally stuck to the back when not fighting.
* TheWorfEffect: Serves as the Worf to Mercury and Emerald alongside Coco, to show how easily they are outmaneuvered and overpowered after previously being easily the most capable students seen. He fares slightly better than Coco, taking much more punishment before going down, though still being pummeled without restraint by Mercury.

[[folder:Ozpin]]
!!Professor Ozpin
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ozpin.png]]
[[caption-width-right:300:''"But perhaps victory is in the simpler things you have long forgotten; things that require a smaller, more honest soul."'']]
->'''Voiced By:''' Creator/ShannonMcCormick [EN], Creator/KazuhikoInoue [JP]

!!Professor Glynda Goodwitch
[[quoteright:300:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/glynda_goodwitch.png]]
[[caption-width-right:300:''"If it were up to me, you'd be sent home with a pat on the back... and a slap on the wrist!"'']]
->'''Voiced By:''' Creator/KathleenZuelch [EN], Creator/MasumiAsano [JP]

%% -->'''Glynda:''' Trouble sleeping?\\

* AlliterativeName: '''P'''eter '''P'''ort.

* SymbolMotifClothing:

* EstablishingCharacterMoment:

* CombatParkour: Throughout his fight with Pyrrha, Dove performs flips of varying sorts and never actually takes a blow from her. Unfortunately, he's teamed with Cardin, who inadvertently knocks him out.

[[caption-width-right:300:''"Hey. Love the outfit, kid."'']]

->'''Voiced By:''' Joe Macdonald

This is now an obsolete page and has been replaced. I have revamped the structure of the RWBY Character pages due to the Monsters and Enemies page getting too unwieldy. This has been discussed and hashed out on the RWBY Forum, please see from this post onwards. Please note that any new tropes added to this old Character page on the 19th October 2017 may not have been captured on the replacement pages. Please check the new character pages, and readd if I've missed it.

He's a huntsman who is a teacher of trainee huntsmen. Lets Get Dangerous is for minor characters no-one would ever expect to be capable of the kind of ability they suddenly display. The girls' weren't particularly shocked by his fighting ability, they were just initially shocked that he was the teacher they'd be lumped with.

* LetsGetDangerous: The usually goofy Oobleck finally draws his weapon when Ruby is in trouble and shows just why he's a qualified Huntsman.
