A list of characters from Falcom's Popful Mail.

Protagonists

Mail

Voiced by: Megumi Hayashibara (Japanese, Mega-CD); Mariko Kouda (Japanese, PC Engine); Melissa Gulden (English, Sega-CD)

A notoriously unlucky half-elven swordsman and Bounty Hunter. She originally chased after the elusive criminal Nuts Cracker, but soon turns her attention to the evil sorcerer Muttonhead when she learns of the much larger bounty on his head.
  • Expy: Mail could easily pass for Lina Inverse in all but name.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Mail starts out with a short sword as her main weapon, but can also obtain daggers and boomerangs as the game goes on.
  • Miser Advisor: Mail's main concern is making money, as she's had zero success capturing one of her most wanted bounties.

Tatt

Voiced by: Hiro Yuki (Drama CD); Akira Ishida (Japanese, Mega-CD); Keiko Toda (Japanese, PC Engine); Shaun Watkins (English, Sega-CD)

A magician and former apprentice of Muttonhead. He joins Mail at the edge of the Elf Woods to learn more about why his master disappeared and became evil.
  • Badass Cape: By default, he wears a large red cloak.
  • Black Mage: Tatt's staves have a variety of offensive elemental capabilities. He himself has the personality of a typical White Mage.
  • Cloak of Defense: When ducking, he raises his cloak in front of him. Like with the other characters, doing this blocks enemy projectiles.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Tatt's name is spelled as "Tatt" everywhere in this game except for his life meter, where his name is spelled as "Tatto".

Gaw

Voiced by: Yumi Touma (Drama CD); Shigeru Chiba (Japanese, Mega-CD); Keiko Yamamoto (Japanese, PC Engine); Blake Dorsey (English, Sega-CD)

One of a species of miniature dragon-like creatures who live in the Wind Cave. After defeating Goradus, one of the Gaws joins Mail and Tatt.
  • Breath Weapon: Fire Breath and Aura Breath.
  • Wings Do Nothing: Gaw's wings are too small for him to sustain flight, but they do help him jump higher than Mail or Tatt.

Allies

Slick

Voiced by: Ryōtarō Okiayu (Drama CD); Nobuo Tobita (Japanese, Mega-CD); Akira Kamiya (PC Engine); Ashley Angel (English, Sega-CD)

A wise-cracking elf who's good with making homemade explosives, but not very cautions about when and where to use them. He crosses paths with Mail frequently during her adventure.
  • The Ditz: Slick has a tendency to crack jokes and get himself into trouble, resulting in other characters (most often Mail) calling him a moron.
  • Dub Name Change: He is known as Blackie in the original games.
    • Spell My Name With An S: Two spellings exist for the Katakana that make up his name: ブラッキー or ブラッキィ. For that matter, the Romanization could be "Blacky," "Blocky," or "Brocky" and all variants of it.

Glug

A kind-hearted dwarf from the mines. He is an artisan, and is good with making trinkets and statuettes.

Antagonists

Nuts Cracker

Voiced by: Blake Dorsey (English, Sega-CD)

The leader of a criminal gang known as the Gingerbread Grifters. He specializes in explosives, usually tossing his many heads about in order to give his would-be captors the slip.
  • Ambiguous Robots: His replaceable, mechanical head would certainly imply he's some kind of robot, albeit one far more lifelike and sentient than the various Golems you fight throughout the game.
  • Catchphrase: "BOOMBA!"
  • Killed Off for Real: The group's final battle with him finally sees his despicable self bite the dust by damaging his brain, destroying his self preservation feature and causing him to blow up.
  • Mad Bomber: Nuts is rather loopy, as his name implies. He uses a seemingly endless supply of detachable heads to annoy and escape from his opponents.
  • Serial Escalation: When introduced into the story, he's but a wacky but seemingly harmless criminal mastermind. Later on, he joins up with Muttonhead and by extension Ulgra's worshippers, caring not if the world is destroyed.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: By the time and the scenario that escalates, Mail and friends have more urgent things to worry about than his bounty when they are forced to face off against him, and promptly give him his dues by not holding back in combat.
  • Was Once a Man: Strongly implied. Nuts Cracker lampshades that he definitely was human, but upgraded himself to be a self repairing robot as long as his head remains intact.

Muttonhead

Voiced by: Keith Lack (English, Sega-CD)

A powerful sorcerer who disappeared from the public eye and turned to evil. He is allegedly dangerous enough for Mail's town to offer a bounty of 2,000,000 gold pieces for his capture.

Venuncio

Voiced by: Greg Soriano (English, Sega-CD)

An apparently air-headed aristocrat who shows up in the Mines as a potential ally to Mail's party, but he quickly turns on them once he discovers the mines are rich with mithril.

Sven T. Uncommon

Voiced by: Matt Atwood (English, Sega-CD)

A muscle-headed servant of the Overlord who attacks Mail multiple times at Zoth Shrine and Fort Fryght.
  • The Ahnold: In the English dub, he's a mix of this and Hans and Franz from Saturday Night Live.
  • Fallen Hero: Sven was originally destined to be the hero who would save the world from Olgra. However, he was enticed by gaining power more than doing good for the world, leading him to join Olgra's worshippers.
  • I'm Your Worst Nightmare: "I'm your worst nightmare, your scariest dream, your sexiest enemy."

Kazyr

Voiced by: T. Owen Smith (English, Sega-CD)

An evil sorcerer who serves as a vassal and enforcer for the Overlord. He shows up as the boss of World 5.

Morgal

One of the Masters of Evil responsible for the destruction of the world many years ago. She is described as The Master of Beasts, commanding all feral and savage creatures of the world to her very whim.
  • Fallen Angel: Literally thrown out of heaven eons ago.
  • God of Evil: Rules over savage beasts, from not just monsters and dangerous animals, but to beastmen and banished creatures of the realm.

Necros

One of the Masters of Evil responsible for the destruction of the world many years ago. He is described as The Tempter, who entices and draws out the evils of men to his cause and bidding.
  • Fallen Angel: Literally thrown out of heaven eons ago.
  • God of Evil
  • Lost in Translation: Originally, as his name implies, Necros was originally an explicit god of death, or literally "The Reaper", who draws out the will and want to kill.

Ulgar

The Evil Overlord responsible for the destruction of the world many years ago.
  • Fallen Angel: Literally thrown out of heaven eons ago.
  • God of Evil
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He and his generals, Morgal and Necros, are mentioned in the intro, but have no direct effect on the plot until they're fought as boss battles after Kazyr is defeated.
