Main Characters

    Monica Flores

Monica

Voiced by: Hannah Grace (ENG), Kaori Nazuka (JPN)

Monica is one of the main heroines and a student that takes Leonard Cosgrove's course. She is outgoing and has a lot of friends, but no "best friends." She suffers from mood-swings, and is easily influenced by passing trends. She and Rooney Simpson don’t get along at first, due to being polar opposites in personality. She comes from an impoverished background, the eldest daughter of 7 siblings. She attends college and works part-time as a janitor and as a waitress. Her dream is to fall in love with a celebrity, and she hopes to accomplish that during the cruise.

  • Alpha Bitch: Comes across as one at the start.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Rescues Rooney in the path towards the True Ending.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Monica has shades of this when examining certain objects.
Monica: A bucket. Great, I'm saved...
  • Decoy Protagonist: She is the first playable character in the game, but Rooney is the actual protagonist.
  • Expy: Possibly one of Laura and Anne from the original Clock Tower game, sharing Laura's appearance and Anne's Alpha Bitch tendencies.
  • Gold Digger: Her main reason for coming onto the cruise is to find a wealthy husband. Subverted in that she wants to marry rich not only for herself, but to give her family a good life.
  • Impossibly-Low Neckline: Given how tight the dress seems to be around her breasts and how low it is, any amount of running should lead to a wardrobe malfunction.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Appears to be self-centered and abrasive during her debut and is quick to tell Rooney to go away so she would get the chance to flirt with Jerome. However, she becomes more approachable towards Rooney once danger takes over the cruise, you learn why she was so insistent on going out with Jerome, and she even saves Rooney's life from Vigo and Jerome.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She is a long-haired woman with an ample bosom, and she dons a strapless dress that bares the upper back of her torso.
  • Parental Abandonment: It's not said what happened to Monica's parents, but we know that she's raising her siblings on her own.
  • Promotion to Parent: You learn in Chapter 3 that she is the only one taking care of her six younger brothers.
  • Too Dumb to Live: If the player chooses to, Monica can make bad decisions that end up killing her. For example, choosing to hide in a dryer.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: She and Rooney become friends during Two Survivors ending. See also Jerk with a Heart of Gold and Big Damn Heroes above.

    Leonard Cosgrove

Leonard

Voiced by: Jack Merluzzi (ENG), Rikiya Koyama (JPN)

Leonard is a British-born cultural anthropologist, and is escorting the heroine(s) and her friends aboard the cruise. He’s hands-on, logical, and interested in occult phenomena from an anthropologist's point of view, but has managed to get to the bottom of and debunk several occult deceptions. In his heart of hearts, he is actually a romantic and occult fanatic. He wants nothing more than to one day encounter an honest-to-goodness supernatural phenomenon that he’s unable to demystify.

  • Expy:
    • Of Professor Barton from Clock Tower 2. Both are professors interested in occult subjects that have playable segments, and can ultimately be corrupted by the villain and killed.
    • Also, to some extent, of Van Helsing from the original Dracula novel. Both are older university professors that have no prior experience with the supernatural, but are familiar with enough occult lore to figure out what's going on despite it contradicting everything they've ever known.
  • Neat Freak: Leonard will often comment on the atrocious living conditions of the cult and has to resist the urge to tidy up.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: While the cult certainly had their own plan to bring Jerome back to the Oceanus for his role in the ritual, Leonard accelerated his return. Bringing a mask of the Faithful with him but not wearing it anymore, Leonard also gave Jerome an opening to disguise himself, getting both Leonard and Cobie killed at the very least.
  • Parental Substitute: He functioned as this to Rooney when neither of her parents wanted her after their divorce.
  • Too Dumb to Live:
    • The player can have Leonard do things like jump into a well to rescue someone without inspecting it or trying to talk to them.
    • Once he fixes a mask to disguise himself as one of the cultists, he takes it off immediately after passing the first group of them and refuses to put it back on, despite entering a building guarded by more, necessitating he find another way to sneak out.
    • After falling from a rope, he will try climbing down an even longer rope without any more assistance if you don't use the Non-Slip Gloves.

    Rooney Simpson

Rooney

Voiced by: Jenny Shima (ENG), Eriko Matsui (JPN)

Rooney is one of the other main heroines. She's an American student that takes Cosgrove's course. Rooney is introverted, serious to a fault, and dislikes standing out. She has suicidal ideations due to an incident from her past. Her schoolmates make fun of her, calling her glum and stale, and she gets the sense that she doesn’t belong in the group.

  • Abusive Parents: They used to lock her in the closet for the night. Then they divorced and neither wanted her, so she ended up living with Leonard, who is her distant relative.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: She's made fun of and mockingly called "Deathwish Diva" by her classmates because of her depressive personality.

    Jerome Theruiau

Jerome

Voiced by: Jonathan Sherr (ENG), Shuntarou Mizuno (JPN)

Jerome is a gifted French conductor with a slender build and sensitive demeanor. Rooney is attracted to his introverted character and cultured background. Most recently, he's been troubled by his unreliable memory, and joined the cruise in the hopes of getting some much-needed rest.

  • Adoptive Name Change: He doesn't remember, but Jerome was born Otto Boradsov.
  • Covered with Scars: His body is covered in scars as a result of whatever the cult is doing with him. It's implied this has something to do with his missing memory.
  • Evil All Along: Starts out as a genuinely nice guy, and is implied to not be a willing member of the Faithful, but he kills Leonard and Cobie and his last appearance in the game is as an antagonist.
  • Expy: Of Nolan Campbell from Clock Tower 2. Both are attractive young men that try to start a relationship with the game's Ms. Simpson and try to fight the Scissor foe to protect their love interests. Jerome also almost had a playable segment.
  • Inbred and Evil: He is the child that resulted from the forced incestuous union between Vigo and Vigo's daughter Yolanda, and also ends the game as an antagonist (if potentially unwillingly).
  • Interrupted Suicide: Stops Rooney from jumping into the ocean at the beginning of her chapter.
  • Missing Time: Claims to have this happen to himself from time to time. There's some implication that he isn't in control and doesn't remember his actions as one of the Faithful.
  • Morality Pet: In the "Trap Party" ending, while Jerome's claim of his and Rooney's safety is ominous and incredibly suspicious, the fact that she appears to be alive at all and not a zombie like in the "Purgatory" or "Pre-Established Harmony" endings imply that he may have actually altered Vigo's plans on her behalf even while under the influence of the cult (even if it's not a situation she would consider saving).
  • Nightmare Sequence: Has a brief nightmare of the Scissorwalker before he knows it's on the ship, foreshadowing his connection to it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: We don't find out what happened to Jerome after he was knocked out by Monica in the True Ending. Made more conspicuous by the implication that he may not be a willing participant in Vigo's plan.

Antagonist

    Scissorwalker

Scissorwalker/Yolanda Boradsov

Scissorwalker is a monstrous humanoid creature brought aboard the Oceanus by a cult known as the Faithful, whom Monica and Rooney must outwit and hide from in order to survive the ordeal. She is later revealed to be Yolanda Boradsov, Vigo's daughter who was ritualistically turned into the horror she is now.

  • The Dog Bites Back: Scissorwalker turns on Vigo and kills him after Rooney uses the Eye of the Kassites.
  • Parental Incest: The victim of it at the hands of her father, Vigo Boradsov.
  • Shear Menace: Yet another monster with scissors as a killing tool.
  • Thrown Down a Well: She was created as part of a ritual when her and her baby were forced into the well on the cult's island.
  • Tragic Monster: She was not only a victim of Parental Incest because of Vigo, but she was also turned into the scissor-wielding monster via occult rituals by the same man.

Passengers

    Kelly Butler

Kelly

Voiced by: Donna Burke (ENG), Takao Koizumi (JPN)

One of Monica's friends.

  • The Gadfly: While Kelly has many of the lines poking at Rooney's "death wish", she apologizes for it once and admits she really is glad to see her. Unlike some of the other characters, like Maria, she seems to bring it up more to tease her than because she actually hates her.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: "Tomboy" to Jessica and, to a lesser extent, Monica's "girly girl".

    Jessica Lopez

Jessica

Voiced by: Donna Burke (ENG), Asuka Itou (JPN)

One of Monica's friends.

  • Hysterical Woman: She's in a panic by the time the Scissorwalker makes its presence known.
  • Phone Call from the Dead: "Jessica" can try to trick Leonard and Rooney this way. For Rooney especially, the fact that she's dead is a good hint to ignore her.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The "Girly girl" to Kelly's tomboy.
  • Valley Girl: Not only has, like, the verbal tic, but is more interested in luxurious gifts Jerome has received than anything else.

    Maria Ortiz

Maria

Voiced by: Donna Burke (ENG), Jun Shimizu (JPN)

One of the other teachers on the cruise.

  • Green-Eyed Monster: Is jealous of Rooney's relationship with Leonard, even though it's more a parent/daughter relationship.
  • In Vino Veritas: Talking to her enough reveals that, despite her protests, she's drunk for the duration of the game's events, explaining her being so open about her resentment of Rooney.

    Angie

Angie

Voiced by: Donna Burke (ENG), Yume Maihara (JPN)

A happily married woman looking for her husband.

  • Defiant to the End: If you get Angie to sacrifice herself for you, she steps out of her hiding place, then calls out and stands defiantly up to the Scissorwalker, unwavering as it kills her.
  • Happily Married: With John Thompson, if social media posts and her words are anything to go on. If you get her killed, you notice she's holding both wedding rings even in death.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: If you try to hide in the shop at the end of the game, Scissorwalker will be about to find you before Angie steps out to distract it from you.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Her husband's wedding ring, which Rooney returns to her when she finds her.

    Harry

Harry

Voiced by: Eric Kelso (ENG), Iwazaki Yousuke (JPN)

Another of Monica's friends.

Crew Members

    Vigo Boradsov

Vigo

Voiced by: Barry Gjerde (ENG), Hidekatsu Shibata (JPN)

The owner of the Oceanus.

  • Evil All Along: He is the leader of the Faithful cult, and the one who masterminded sending the Scissorwalker after the passengers aboard the cruise ship.
  • Glass Eye: Vigo possesses one in place of one eye. It's actually the Eye of the Kassites, which he uses to control the Scissorwalker.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He meets his demise when Rooney uses the eye's power to turn the Scissorwalker against him.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: As part of his role in playing dumb and insisting he wants to help the passengers of his ship, Vigo gives Rooney a key to another deck. This key allows Rooney to get all of the other pieces she needs to foil Vigo's plan (including rescuing Monica so she can later rescue Rooney).
  • Parental Incest: With his daughter, Yolanda, in order to impregnate her.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Only shows up three small times, at the tutorial stage of the game during chapter one with Monica, later in the storage room with the other survivors, and in the True Ending as the man responsible for the creation of the Scissorwalker, and the deaths of everyone on the cruise.

    Eric

Eric

Voiced by: Chris Wells (ENG), Mamoru Miyano (JPN)

The chief purser of the ship's crew.

  • Ambiguously Evil: Is incredibly creepy from the beginning, but even after you learn that you can trust him, there are many unanswered questions about him and his actions that could still be bad even if they weren't bad for you.
  • Creepy Red Herring: Eric starts the game cutting fabric into shreds while scratching a mysterious, oozing wound on his neck. He proceeds to act suspiciously throughout the rest of the game, even offering you medicine out of nowhere, and another character explicitly tells you not to trust him (since the other character is dead by that point, it turns out you should trust Eric after all).
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Although he appears in the Sole Survivor ending, he is conspicuously absent from the Two Survivors ending and it's never answered whether or not he's part of the Faithful.

    Cobie

Cobie

Voiced by: Barry Gjerde (ENG), Ogura Naohiro (JPN)

The purser of the ship's crew.

  • The Reveal: Finding Cobie's shirtless corpse reveals that it was Jerome in Cobie's jacket and not Eric that attacked at the end of Leonard's chapter.

    Saul

Saul

The first mate of the ship.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He's found next to the dart machines, apparently used as target practice by the Scissorwalker (who will try to do the same to you when you find him).
  • The Password Is Always "Swordfish": It turns out that the image he texted is a hint to the password to Vigo's office. He keeps three billiard balls with him at all times to remember what part of the image is the password.

    The Captain

The Captain of the Oceanus

The captain of the ship.

  • Anonymous Benefactor: As the only one doing research into Vigo's past, he's implied to be the one who slips Jerome a photo of his real family in an attempt to subvert Vigo's plan.
  • Dying Clue: The translation of Vigo's diary that the captain left up on his computer proves to be the final key to unlocking how Vigo made and controls the Scisosswalker.
  • The Ghost: Vigo wonders if he survived and you visit his office, but he's never encountered in game.
  • He Knows Too Much: Vigo's suspiciously specific question about the fate of the captain, and later finding out the captain was looking into Vigo's plan, imply Vigo might have specifically arranged his death.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He never even appears on screen, but without him Rooney never would have made the connection between Jerome and Vigo or been able to stop the Scissorwalker ritual.

Other

    Connie

Connie

Voiced by: Soness Stevens (ENG), Ai Shimizu (JPN)

A mysterious little girl who haunts Rooney.

  • Ambiguously Related: There's strong implication that Connie is Rooney's sister, and her death (and Rooney's blame for the death) is why Rooney's parents split and neither wanted her. However, the game never actually confirms it anywhere.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Rooney's initial reaction to Connie's presence implies she's a guilt-induced hallucination that she's been regularly dealing with since Connie's death. However, the first time the player encounters Connie is when Monica sees her running off when Rooney isn't even around. That also happens to be the only time anyone other than Rooney sees Connie.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: In the Pre-established Harmony ending, Connie transforms into the second Scissorwalker.
  • Body Horror: In one of the bad endings, you partially see that under her hat, the entire top part of her head is skinned off. The result of dying via boat propeller.
  • Break Them by Talking: Seems to have been doing this to Rooney for a while, often urging her to commit suicide.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: How she died; while out on a boat, Connie's hat fell into the lake. Rooney was getting the hat out of the water when Connie ran up to her to try and shove her in as a prank. Connie's running caused her to slip and fall into the boat's propeller. If she hadn't tried to pull a mean prank on Rooney, she wouldn't have died.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She's often blaming Rooney for her death and trying to convince her to kill herself. She was also mean and cruel when she was alive.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Throws a temper tantrum when Rooney reveals the truth of what happened on the day she died.
