fsociety

"The people are realizing they don't have freedom of choice so long as you exist. The people are waking up; no longer accepting your economic slavery."

  • Black-and-Gray Morality: They're criminal hackers willing to commit various crimes (up to and including murder in some cases) to achieve their goals. However, E Corp is a genuinely harmful conglomerate of Corrupt Corporate Executives choking the life out of society for their own gain, and the Dark Army are amoral mercenary hackers willing to commit mass murder and fund terror attacks if it makes them a bit of money. It's safe to say they're on the lighter side of the scale.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: By the end of Season 3, Elliot and Darlene are basically unaffiliated with them and Romero, Trenton and Mobley are dead. Only anonymous followers remain, and they've mostly been co-opted by the Dark Army.
  • Dwindling Party: Of the five main members, three are dead by the end of Season 3.
  • Expy: Of Anonymous. One Anon even told International Business Times that they considered the show to be "the most accurate portrayal of security and hacking culture ever to grace the screen".
  • False Flag Operation: With the original fsociety scattered, the Dark Army is happy to keep using their name and image as a front for its much more malevolent agenda. Once they've gotten what they need from the fsociety brand, the Dark Army disposes of Trenton and Mobley and makes it look like their 'revolution' was all just a cover for Iranian cyber warfare, effectively hiding one False Flag Operation inside another.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: At the start, they're a small group of motivated people hacking out of an abandoned arcade on Coney Island, and are only known for making mischief and sending out cryptic video messages. Then they manage to pull off the most damaging economic hack in history, single-handedly reshaping the world economy and putting them on everyone's radar. By the start of the second season, they have followers all over the country.
  • Hacker Collective: They're hacktivists working together to bring down E Corp and foment a revolution against the top 1% of the top 1%.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Up until "402 Payment Required" Elliot was the only member who didn't know that Darlene killed Susan Jacobs.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: In keeping with the Expy motif, their uniform in public is a black hoodie and a Guy Fawkes-styled mask. Season 2 reveals that the mask was actually inspired by an old slasher film, in which a man in this mask murders a party of rich people.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: They come from all walks of life, many of them disagree with or dislike one another, and their leader is completely Ax-Crazy — but they're all in it together when it comes to hacking E Corp.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Of the Dark Army. Irving makes it crystal clear to Mr. Robot that White Rose has been playing them from the very beginning, and that the only reason their 'revolution' was allowed to happen was because they and the 1% of the 1% allowed it. Why, however, still isn't clear; only that it has to do with White Rose's plant.
  • Villain Protagonist: They're the protagonists, but they are fighting for a goal that will (and ultimately does) cause untold economic damage to society and screw over many innocent people. In both seasons where they're the focus, they're pitted up against a Hero Antagonist who's painted as one of the kindest characters in the story (Gideon in the first, Dom in the second).

    Elliot

    Darlene

    Mobley

Mobley a.k.a. Sunil Markesh

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled_309.png
Played by: Azhar Khan

People are all just people, right? When it gets down to it, everyone's the same. They love something. They want something. They fear something. Specifics help, but specifics don't change the way that everyone is vulnerable. It just changes the way that we access those vulnerabilities.

An IT technician for Bank of E, Mobley took part in many of fsociety's hacks and introduced Romero to the group. He becomes Darlene's closest advisor following the 5/9 hack, but soon becomes suspicious of both Darlene and Elliot after Romero's murder.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Much of "Successor" focuses on him as his paranoia rapidly increases, culminating with him and Trenton going on the lam to start new lives in hiding.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Compared to the far more stoic Trenton, who attempts to bargain for their lives when the Dark Army has them cornered, Mobley spends his final moments as a blubbering mess.
  • Ascended Extra: He was one of the lesser-exposed Fsociety members in the first season, frequently eclipsed by Trenton and Romero. The second season gives him significantly more screen time and important dialogue, and even has him be the one to discover Romero's corpse.
  • Back for the Dead: Becomes a casualty along with Trenton after being absent for most of Season 3.
  • Driven to Suicide: The Dark Army makes it look like he and Trenton did this.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Trenton implies that getting to hang around with like-minded people is his main reason for joining fsociety in the first place.
  • Mirthless Laughter: He laughs hysterically after finding out about Susan Jacob's death.
  • Mr. Vice Guy: Elliot notes that he tends to give into his urges.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Mobley seems to be an online handle. In Season 2, we find out his real name is Sunil Markesh.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: The most casual and lighthearted member of fsociety. Makes his death even more heartbreaking.
  • Properly Paranoid: Zigzagged. He's correct that fsociety is under surveillance by the FBI, but is unaware how little they know about them. However, he is 100% correct that the Dark Army is hunting them.
  • Running Gag: He'll often reiterate statements made by other fsociety members, but cleaned up and simplified to avoid offense.
  • The Scapegoat: He and Trenton are forced to become this by the Dark Army, being killed in such a way that it looks like they committed suicide in the middle of an Orgy of Evidence that pins them for 5/9, Stage 2, and a future attack.
  • Starting a New Life: Tries to do this at the end of Season 2, hiding out on the West Coast alongside Trenton to escape the FBI and Dark Army. Leon nabs them just when they think they've gotten away.
  • Those Two Guys: Often referred to in the same breath as Trenton, and they flee the city together in Season 2. They also die together.

    Trenton

Trenton a.k.a. Shama Biswas

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/image1_5.PNG
Played by: Sunita Mani

Have you ever considered which part of our scheme motivates you?

Born to an Iranian immigrant couple, Shama "Trenton" Biswas joined fsociety after witnessing how American consumerism had left her parents spread too thin financially in spite of their misplaced confidence in the economy. She soon came under Darlene's wing as the 5/9 hack is planned in conjunction with the Dark Army.

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Averted. She immediately tries to bargain for her and Mobley's lives once it becomes apparent that they are about to be sacrificed.
  • Back for the Dead: "eps3.6fredrick&tanya.chk", the one episode in season three where we actually see her, ends with Grant and his entourage of Dark Army goons forcing her and Mobley to commit suicide.
  • Dawson Casting: Trenton is only 16 or 17 whereas Sunita Mani is in her early 30s.
  • Defector from Decadence: Her primary motivation for joining fsociety. Her parents embraced "the American Dream" upon leaving Iran, but she grew disgusted by their rampant consumerism and has come to believe that they will die in debt.
  • Nice Girl: Arguably the warmest member of fsociety, which makes her death even more heartbreaking.
  • Only Known By Her Nickname: "Trenton" appears to be an alias. Her real name is eventually revealed to be Shana Biswas. Her nickname is taken from Trenton, New Jersey, where her brother was born.
  • The Quiet One: Speaks the least among fsociety's ranks.
  • Starting a New Life: After vanishing in season two, the finale reveals that she and Mobley had actually pursued new lives in Arizona using false identities. This ultimately fails when the Dark Army finds them anyway.
  • The Scapegoat: She and Mobley are forced to become this by the Dark Army, being killed in such a way that it looks like they committed suicide in the middle of an Orgy of Evidence that pegs them for 5/9, stage 2, and a future attack.
  • Token Religious Teammate: The only religious person in fsociety, judging by her attire. By the time she and Mobley start new lives, she stopped wearing her hijab but ironically is still hiding her hair by wearing a wig, so it's not clear how devout she is, or if she's just not wearing it to further hide her identity.

    Romero

Leslie Romero

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/romero_0.jpg
Played by: Ron Cephas Jones

Fuck no, man. I'm too broke to be superstitious.

The oldest of the group, Romero began as a phone phreaker nearly thirty years ago and has continued to hack ever since. He was introduced to fsociety by Mobley.

  • Black Dude Dies First: He's the first member of the group killed.
  • The Cynic: The most cynical of the group, and the most eager to leave when he feels as though they are not getting anywhere.
  • Hypochondriac: Elliot describes him as this.
  • Kidnapped by the Call: Tries to leave fsociety to a quiet life of growing and selling pot, until Mr. Robot threatens him with a gun to come back.
  • Killed Offscreen: Shot in his backyard by an unknown party before the second episode, and discovered by Mobley at the start. In the finale of the season, we find out that the bullet that killed him was a stray shot from a neighbor, rather than a Dark Army assassination.
  • Only Sane Man: Sees himself as this. Given the behavior of his colleagues and the fact that his boss has a homicidal Split Personality, he may be right. And he was the only one who allowed for the idea that the revolution might not go as planned.
  • Seen It All: Romero says he's been in the "hacking game" for 27 years.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He is not given as much focus as some other Fsociety members, but the second season reveals that he was the one who got the Coney Island hideout for Fsociety, and his death tips Fsociety off that someone knows who they are, though it turns out that party is not who killed him.
    • He even has an impact a full season after his death: Trenton's posthumous automatic email reveals that he installed keyloggers in the Coney Island computers even though there was never a real backup plan — which could allow Elliot and Darlene to decrypt E Corp's data and reverse the effects of Five/Nine. Even though Trenton was wrong about one detail (the keyloggers were only installed to spy on everyone, while the data encryption was in fact Mr. Robot), his actions are the only thing that tip Elliot off.
