Benji
- Amazon Chaser: He has a crush on General Lydia and wants to become a hero partly so he can be a Battle Couple with her. note
- Dream Sue: He has a dream where he defeats an evil overlord and his army simultaneously with Awesomeness. He is nowhere near this when he's awake. Not even when he awakens his dragokin powers.
- Expy: He's Ben 2.0; a supporting protagonist without combat skills that follows the heroes and gets an 11th-Hour Superpower. The key difference between them is Benji doesn't say Shout Outs to real world products.
- Eleventh Hour Super Power: In the final act of the climax he awakens his latent dragokin powers.
- Genetic Memory: The explanation for his Instant Expert status; he inherited Daniar's powers along with the skill to use them.
- Guile Hero: Downplayed as he's too much of an Idiot Hero to make proper use of it but he shows potential:
- Zarracka is impressed by the deviousness of his plan to escape a city.
- He wins his fight with Kthonia by outsmarting her instead of overpowering her.
- The Hero: What he wants to be. The prologue is a dream of his where he saves a village from an evil overlord.
- Jumped at the Call: Exaggerated; he didn't get a call in the first place but he still wants to be a hero.
- Kid Hero: Tries again and again to be this but constantly fails until the final act.
- Lamarck Was Right: Everyone thinks he will inherit his mother's power but he's a normal human Until the climax.
- The Load: He's useless in battle and has nothing to contributed outside of battle.
- Meaningful Name: Daniar named him after Ben, the previous protagonist.
- The Mill Stone: His over-eagerness combined with his incompetence cause a great deal of trouble.
- Morality Pet: He is the key to redeeming Zarracka
- Playing with Fire and An Ice Person: Unlike his mother and aunts, he has two element powers instead of one.
- Precocious Crush: He's ten and Lydia is fifteen.
- The Protagonist: He's the main character and like his namesake he is also a Supporting Protagonist. In fact, his role is smaller because he's not sought after.
- Tagalong Kid: He was supposed to stay home but stole away on a hippogriff.
- Weak, but Skilled: He inherits his mother's skill via Genetic Memory but not her stamina so he tires quickly.
Wispy
- The Conscience: She tries to keep Benji on the straight and narrow.
- Nonhuman Sidekick: She's a cat that follows Benji around and (unwilling) assists in his schemes.
The Kthonian Knights
Jihadain, Abyss, Ravage, and Furie.
- Achilles' Heel: Due to Jihadain's magic they can survive any injury as long as their heart is intact.
- Arch-Enemy: Jihadain and Daniar. In fact, Jihadain has gone to quite extreme lengths to prove how much she hates Daniar, such as injuring her when she was pregnant and killing her child and constantly taunting Daniar for her kind nature - playing up the fact that Daniar will never kill her.
- Amazon Brigade: They're supposed to be this but Jihadain let Ravage join because he's Furie's protective big brother and she wants him to join.
- Big Bad: Jihadain is their leader and the villain with The Plan that moves the plot forward.
- Big Brother Instinct: Ravage is part of the group to keep an eye on his little sister, Furie.
- Bloody Murder: Furie can use her blood as a weapon.
- Character Death: All of them die by the time Kthonia is revived.
- Daddy's Little Villain: Jihadain, or rather, Sali-ka, is the daughter of Kthonia.
- Dark and Troubled Past: All of them have one that explains why they feel the way they do; the three girls were kidnapped and raped by truly evil men and the guy had his hands cut off and left for dead for deserting the Leondian army. All of them function as a Freudian Excuse except for the last one. The only thing his past does is make him angst about how he can no longer truly embrace his precious little sister.
- Evil Plan: Awaken Kthonia and wipe out every last man on Draconica because men (except Ravage) are evil.
- Females Are More Innocent: The only reason the three women want to wipe out all the men in the world is because they were horrifically abused by men and so they think all of them are evil. Even Kthonia herself fits this trope; Jihadain, her daughter, attacks Daniar, Kalak's wife, and is killed by him for it. Kthonia watches this happen and thinks everything is Kalak's fault.
- I Am Not Left-Handed: Ravage has a Super Mode that makes him bigger and stronger and tougher; he uses it when Finn gains the upper hand in their fight.
- Mind Rape: Abyss uses Psychic Powers to invade her target's mind, find their worst memory, and uses it to break them psychologically.
- Quirky Mini Boss Squad: Averted. They would be this if their leader, Jihadain, weren't also the Big Bad.
- The One Guy: Ravage is the only guy in a group of a girls.
- Token Good Teammate: Downplayed as Ravage is called such for a reason but he's the only one in the group that's not interested in Gendercide.
- True Companions: They love each other as family.
- Was Once a Man: Jihadain builds an army of monsters by infecting civilians with The Virus.
- We Used to Be Friends: Jihadain and Daniar. They trained together and used to be close friends. That was until Jihadain learned about the truth about her mother being killed by men and she went crazy. When Daniar refused to join her, she took it personally and sought to hurt her however possible.
Kthonia
- Character Death: She is the first villain that is deliberately killed by the heroes.
- Combat Tentacles: Her primary weapon is four of them.
- Does Not Like Men: Her culture was based on torturing men because they were male.
- Gendercide: Like her knights, she wants to kill all men. After Daniar points out that women are not morally superior to men, she decides to kill everyone.
- Greater-Scope Villain: She is more powerful than all of the knights put together but she is locked away and unaware of their plans to free her. In fact, she's surprised and tries to talk Jihadain out of it until Kalak kills her and she freaks out.
- Happily Married: She was happy with her husband before she was burned at the stake.
- Heel–Face Revolving Door: First she was evil and then she turned good because of her lover and then bad again because of Kalak killing Sali-ka and then pretended to reform to avoid dying again before she was finally killed.
- The Juggernaut: Her fight scene is, in a nutshell, her walking down the street while the heroes throw themselves at her in pointless attempts to stop or harm her.
- Love Redeems: The man that became her husband was a Death Seeker and therefore Too Kinky to Torture. Eventually she fell for him and mellowed out.
- Mama Bear: She was harmless until Kalak killed her daughter, Sali-ka.
- Not Using the "Z" Word: Being a life form that died and then cam back to life as something else, she's technically a zombie but no one uses that word.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: Trapped within her heart which was hidden in a place no one would think to look for it.
Man In Shadow
- The Chessmaster: Rana didn't send a distress message to Brittania; this guy did. He orchestrated the events in Drewghaven to draw Daniar's attention away from her castle and Erowin's grave. The final scene of the book shows the youngest dragokin's corpse was his goal all along.
- Faux Affably Evil: He's casual and affable at all times; even when threatening to rape the person he's talking to.
- Improbable Weapon User: The shreds of his tattered cape can be used as four extra limbs.
- Man Behind the Man: He's responsible for organizing the search for the prison of the Kthonian Knights and provides them with information so they'll do his dirty work for him.
- No Name Given: 'Man in Shadow' is just what others call him because he sounds like a man and stays in the shadows.
Rufus and his goblins
- Cast Herd: The goblins have their quirks but they have more identity as a group than individuals and they're always together. Likewise, Rufus calls for them in every scene he's in.
- Gadgeteer Genius: Rufus is the brightest engineer in the nation. A Mini-Mecha is only his latest project.
- Handicapped Badass: Deconstructed. He's a big and strong guy but with a bum leg there's little he can do to stop Mordak and Zarracka from destroying Final Shield. Then again, the legs of his Mini-Mecha work fine.
- Mean Boss: Rufus shouts abuse at his goblin employees because they're stupid and get on his nerves.
- Translator Buddy: The goblins never speak like the other characters and yet Rufus can understand them.
Jago
- New Old Flame: He had a close relationship with Daniar in the past but she never mentioned him; not even when she started a relationship with Kalak.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: He does an admirable job managing his city. To demonstrate: he refuses to let the civilians of others cities die or mutate but can't take in too many or they'll all starve. Also, he insists on protocol when letting anyone in or out of Final Shield.
- You Shall Not Pass!: Stands in Jihadain's way during the climax and is little more than road bump to her.
