     Queen Zanadakhete
Queen of Jebe-Barkal.

Tropes applying to Queen Zanadakhete:

  • Cool Old Lady
  • The High Queen: Quite literally, as she is the ultimate authority in Jebe-Barkal & the princes who rule different provinces technically answer to her.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She is pleased to hear of the Mahrkagir's defeat, & honors the Jebean women for the part they played in it. She also gives the group permission to travel to Saba & see if they would be receptive to diplomacy.

     Ras Lijasu
Prince of Jebe-Barkal.

     Tifari Amu

Tifari Amu

One of the prince's bearers. He is tasked with escorting Phedre, Joscelin and Imriel to Saba after the Queen gives her blessing to them to continue on their expedition. He develops a crush on Kaneka and hopes to win her hand one day.

Tropes applying to Tifari:

     Kaneka

Kaneka

Survivor of Darsanga, and a native of the village of Dehebo.

Tropes applying to Kaneka:

  • Action Girl: Kaneka is very handy with an axe, as Phedre finds out.
  • Blood Knight: During the attack on Darsanga, she fights fiercely and kills Gashtaham when he's about to attack Phedre, saying she was hoping to get a chance to kill a bone priest.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She ran away from home after her brother cheated in a competition to become their village's new storyteller. She was captured by renegade tribesmen & wound up in Iskandria, where she was sold to a bone priest.
  • Heroic BSoD: She'd crossed the Despair Event Horizon long before Phedre's arrival in Darsanga, and it takes Phedre a long time and a lot of convincing to get Kaneka to support her plan to overthrown the garrison and kill the Mahrkagir.
  • Hope Is Scary: She is very reluctant to allow herself to hope after hearing Phedre's plan.
  • Made a Slave: She ran away from home & ended up being sold into slavery.
  • Sibling Rivalry: She & her brother both wanted to be named their grandmother's successor as village storyteller. Her brother went so far as to cheat to win the competition.

     Safiya

Safiya

Survivor of Darsanga, and a native of Meroe.

Tropes applying to Safiya:

  • Made a Slave: She was one of those abducted and enslaved in Darsanga.
  • Nice Girl: She is very sweet and nice.

     Shoanete

Shoanete

Kaneka's grandmother and Storyteller of Dehebo.
