The Hero of our story. A 15-year-old boy from Destiny Islands, he's just defeated Xehanort in the main timeline. Now trapped in an alternate timeline, he has 24 hours to defeat Master Xehanort or else disappear forever and let Xehanort rule over all worlds and have his second Keyblade War. Sora is one of two characters* from the main timeline, although Master Xehanort and (the dethroned) Mickey Mouse are also aware of it.

- Idiot Hero: Still just as naive has he always was, although it's even more pronounced here in the super-gritty alternate timeline.

The Worf Effect: Despite all the experience he's gained and feats he's achieved in the main timeline, he constantly gets kicked around by Kairi and Xehanort in this new timeline.

Riku

Sora's best friend in the main timeline, he's now just one of thirteen spare bodies that Xehanort can possess, Pain/Pein-style. This was a result of him giving into the darkness, in the same way that he did in the first Kingdom Hearts - but without Sora to save him, he just became Ansem's and later Master Xehanort's permanent Meat Puppet.

Evil Costume Switch: Permanently in Dark Mode, even after his Heel Face Turn.

Lightning Bruiser: Just as fast and strong as he always was. Which is pretty bad for Sora this time around.

Shout Out: A former ally of The Hero, now Brainwashed and Crazy and serving the Big Bad until his Heel Face Turn and Heroic Sacrifice, just like Rinzler (who Sora himself even fought!)
Voice of the Legion: Like when he's possessed in the first game, he speaks with a dual voice (the second voice alternating between Ansem, Master Xehanort or both depending on who's possessing him).

Kairi

Sora's... umm, other best friend and one of the seven Princesses of Heart. In this continuity, she's become a Keyblade Master and Mickey's right-hand woman. She's also sought after by Xehanort in order to complete the God Blade.

Tomboyish Ponytail: Wears one to emphasize her Action Girl nature, and for other reasons too. Once she drops her "battle woman" act, she lets her hair down, reminding Sora and the reader that she's the same old Kairi.
Took a Level in Jerkass: Is considerably colder and more serious in this universe, much to Sora's chagrin. After spending more time with Sora, her true personality shows through: she's still just as sweet and caring, and was only pretending to be a battle-hardened stoic to convince others - and herself - that she was not to be messed with.
