[[folder:The Smith Syndicate - Harman and the killer7]]
!! Harman Smith
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/harman_smith.jpg]]
->VA: DwightSchultz

-->''"Good night, child. It's past your bedtime."''

The commander of the killer7. An elderly old man in a wheelchair who spends most of his time in a comatose state getting abused by his [[{{Meido}} maid]], Samantha. When he's awake though, he wields a high-velocity sniper rifle and plays [[TheChessmaster a mean game of chess]]. In gameplay, he has the highest stamina of all the Smiths, but he is only useable in particular scenes.

* AlternateSelf: [[spoiler:It's vague, but it seems that the Harman in Garcian's house is actually a splinter of the real one. Near the end of the game, he takes off to the Union Hotel, this time appearing as he did when he was younger. You get to play as him in the bonus killer8 mode]].
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Due to the powers he possesses, [[spoiler:as well as the fact that he seems to be immortal and have multiple manifestations]].
* BadassGrandpa: He doesn't fight much, but when he does... well, let's just say his wheelchair is equipped with an anti-tank rifle for a reason.
* BadPowersGoodPeople: His rifle is the deadliest weapon in the game, and he is the leader of an assassin syndicate. This said, he uses his resources to oppose Kun Lan.
* {{BFG}}: His weapon of choice is an anti-tank rifle.
* BigGood: For a loose interpretation of what can be considered "good", anyway.
* TheChessmaster: A benevolent example, in contrast to Kun Lan. Both are literal examples as well.
* ColdSniper: Very calm and with a massive gun.
* DecoyProtagonist: [[spoiler:Garcian is the true protagonist, not Harman. Symbolically, his Handsome Man counterpart, Handsome Red, is one to Handsome Pink. [[{{Foreshadowing}} Guess who her killer7 counterpart is?]]]]
* KillingYourAlternateSelf: Seems to be what happens near the end, [[spoiler:as Harman's young AlternateSelf - a splinter of his godly persona - shoots up both the original Harman and Kun Lan. It doesn't stick, according to the epilogue]].
* MoreDakka: [[spoiler:Young Harman's tommy gun]].
* OneHitKill: his rifle is ''massively'' powerful, being able to disintegrate a Handsome Man with a single shot.
* PromotedToPlayable: In the bonus [[spoiler:killer8]] mode, [[spoiler:his younger AlternateSelf is playable like any other personality]].
* StoneWall: He has so much health that his health gauge on his channel goes way off the right side of the screen. Too bad he's never in a situation where he takes damage. [[spoiler:Young Harman also has an absurd amount of health, but the trade-off is that if he dies, he's an absolute nightmare on your wrists to try and revive.]]

!! Garcian Smith
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/garcian_smith.jpg]]
->VA: Greg Eagles

-->''"Don't make me say it again. I'm a cleaner."''

The second-in-command. The only member of the killer7 who directly reports to Harman. A suave, detached man whose job as a "cleaner" leaves him without remorse for the dead. He can resurrect any of the Smiths who are killed in action by venturing out into the field and collecting their head. He uses a silenced pistol, but isn't very effective in combat. He wields the Vision ring, which allows him to see remnant psyches and change personae at will, as well as a large suitcase.

* CleanupCrew: As he's a "cleaner".
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite being an assassin, he really didn't like the idea of Curtis harvesting organs from children.
* HandbagOfHurt: Uses his briefcase in his down attack
* HiddenDepths: [[AllThereInTheManual "Hand in killer7"]] describes him as "a sweet man who would not hurt a fly."
* ScaryBlackMan: Despite not being that useful in combat, he comes across as very intimidating in cutscenes.
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:He doesn't remember it, but he used to be Emir, the psychopathic assassin who killed the first Smith Syndicate years ago]].
* TokenMinority: The only black guy, although he has a major role.
* TheStoic: Isn't nearly as chatty as the other personae.
** NotSoStoic: [[spoiler:After the reveal that he's an amnesiac Emir, he begins visibly panicking and refuses to believe it's the truth. He's stunned into silence when he sees what's really in his briefcase: the weapons of his "teammates."]]

!! Dan Smith
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dan_smith.jpg]]
->VA: Michael Gough

-->''"I feel my blood rushing through my body once more. Yes, this is it. This feeling is coming back to me! The sensation of ''killing''. The doom and darkness. The dark streets, they're calling me...calling me to the ultimate ring!"''

TheLancer. SociopathicHero extraordinaire. He wields a powerful revolver which can unleash a [[WaveMotionGun massive blast of energy]] called the Collateral Shot. Somewhat of a [[SpotlightStealingSquad Spotlight Stealer]]. He later revives his ultimate weapon: the [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Demon Gun]].

* BloodKnight: He ''definitely'' loves fighting the Heavenly Smiles.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: REALLY despises Curtis for that harvesting of organs thing. [[spoiler: That, and [[RageAgainstTheMentor Curtis used to be his mentor]] before Dan got set up by him.]]
* HotBloodedSideburns: More obvious when the art shift in an anime style for the sideburns. As for the hot bloodedness, he wasn't called the Hellion by Iwazaru for nothing.
* TheRedBaron: He's known as 'The Hellion'.
* RevolversAreJustBetter: Especially if they're a 12-shot gun called "The Demon Gun".
* SlasherSmile: To compliment him fighting off the Heavenly Smiles.
* SmugSnake: [[spoiler: In life, he could talk [[DeathByIrony but couldn't back it up.]] In death, he gained the power to prove it.]]

!! KAEDE Smith
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kaede_smith.jpg]]
->VA: TaraStrong

-->''"I've changed my makeup. Did you notice? Tch... men. They never notice... these kinds of things."''

TheChick. [[TheSmurfettePrinciple The only girl]]. A sarcastic yet downtrodden woman with a permanent bloodstain on her dress and no shoes, giving her the nickname "Barefoot". She can [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic slit her wrists]] and use the ensuing RainOfBlood to destroy hidden barriers. She has also equipped her [[SniperPistol pistol with a very handy scope]]. Her first name is capitalized to stress that it is written in romaji, which hints at her non-Japanese origins.

* DeadpanSnarker: A slightly strange one, but one nonetheless.
* EmotionlessGirl: Suda has stated he specifically made KAEDE to make players uncomfortable. [[invoked]]
* KickChick: One of her counters. According to [[AllThereInTheManual "Hand in killer7,"]] she knows martial arts.
* UnorthodoxReload: The only killer7 member to avert this. Unfortunately, this also means that she has the slowest reload time (and if you reload while zoomed in, she fumbles with the clip, making it take even longer.)
* WomanInWhite: Contrasted with the bloodstain. [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotSymbolic Why yes]], [[{{Squick}} it is symbolic]].

!! Con Smith
[[quoteright:262:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/con_smith.jpg]]
->VA: Jun Hee Lee

-->''"Laaaater! Peace!"''

The kid. [[BlindSeer Blind]]. Cocky. Wields [[GunsAkimbo two rapid-fire pistols]] and is the fastest of the Smiths. His special power [[OffLikeAShot gives a massive boost to his running speed]]. Being a kid, he can also fit through spaces that are too small for the others. His blindness also allows him to hear weakened walls and hidden passages.

* {{Adorkable}}: He's a {{Fanboy}} of the Handsome Men, and reacts with a childlike glee when they arrive for their duel and start posing.
* BigBrotherWorship: According to [[AllThereInTheManual "Hand in killer7,"]] Con holds Coyote in high regard. This could explain why Con, like Coyote, holds his guns at a weird angle, swears a lot, and has a dislike of Dan.
* DisabilitySuperpower: Being blind means that his hearing has become exceptionally better.
* {{Fanboy}}: He gets super excited when he "sees" the Handsome Men do their famous pose.
* GangstaStyle: Has probably the [[http://images.onesite.com/capcom-unity.com/user/satsuinohadouandy/afda028f70467f077203c5c83eb7cd64.png?v=100473 weirdest aiming stance]] of the Smiths. First-person view shows him tilting his guns in the same direction, one held over the other.
* GunsAkimbo: He has an automatic pistol in each hand.
* HeadphonesEqualIsolation: Subverted. Apparently it makes him hear better. [[spoiler: Played straight when he was killed by Emir, if you interpret the scene as Con not hearing the gunman because he was listening to music.]]
* MoreDakka: He's the fastest-shooting Smith and is ideal for bullet spam.
* PrecisionFStrike: "Fuck you!"
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: He's the youngest in the group, at age 14. He's also a skilled assassin who's not afraid to drop F bombs.
* UnorthodoxReload: He uses his feet to help reload his guns, basically playing hacky sack with the clips.

!! Coyote Smith
->VA: Benito Martinez
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/coyote_smith.jpg]]

-->''"Sorry pal, but this is the moment I've been waiting for, I have to do this, or the anger inside will not go away."''

The punk. A small-time thief with a penchant for loud Hawaiian shirts. Wields his revolver GangstaStyle to look cool and has a foul mouth. Despite everyone [[ButtMonkey putting him down]], he's the only Smith who can remove padlocks from doors and can make [[InASingleBound incredible vertical jumps]] to reach otherwise inaccessible places.

* GangstaStyle: So gangsta that it's almost ''upside-down''.
* MasterOfUnlocking: Is capable of picking padlocks with one hand. By just manhandling them for a few seconds.
* PrecisionFStrike: "You're fucked!"
* RevolversAreJustBetter: He holds his ''diagonally'' when targeting.
* SouthOfTheBorder: Being Mexican with a knack for picking locks have led some reviewers to wonder if the devs have been watching too much ''Series/ChappellesShow''.

!! MASK de Smith
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mask_de_smith.jpg]]
->VA: Miguel Caballero

-->''"I'm not a monster, it's only a mask."''

TheBigGuy. [[ProfessionalWrestling Professional lucha libre wrestler]]. A generally nice guy who draws his strength from MaskPower, HeroicWillpower, and [[GunsAkimbo two]] {{Grenade Launcher}}s. Has the greatest vitality of all the Smiths save for Harman himself. You need him to blow holes through cracked walls and move heavy objects. Like KAEDE, his first name is written in romaji. He is implied to have been highly popular and successful as a wrestler, until his sudden disappearance from the wrestling circuit.

* AuthorAppeal: Suda51 likes his luchadors.
* CrutchCharacter: His powerful grenade launchers can take down low-level Smiles in a single hit. But because you can't hit their weak points, you never get any thick blood from doing so.
* GentleGiant: He likes kids.
* KillItWithFire: One of his character selection quotes states this.
* MagikarpPower: If you take the time to find all of his masks, he'll become super powerful and he won't have to reload every time he fires.
* MaskedLuchador: Duh. It's even in his name.
* MightyGlacier: Has the best vitality strength and fights with grenade launchers, but he's also the slowest out of the 7. [[spoiler:Unless you find his masks]].
* OneWingedAngel: [[spoiler:Comes back to life after dying in his HopelessBossFight against Handsome Purple, with a new costume and stronger moves.]]
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: He ''suplexes rubble'' and ''headbutts a bullet'' at one point.

!! Kevin Smith
[[quoteright:310:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kevin_smith25.jpg]]
The unknown. A mysterious, [[TheVoiceless silent]] albino with SinisterShades, no shirt and an [[BottomlessMagazines unlimited supply of throwing knives]]. A MasterOfDisguise with the power to [[{{Invisibility}} literally turn invisible]] just by taking his shades off, letting him waltz through enemies and security systems with ease.

* AllThereInTheManual: Kevin is gay, and his voice apparently has the ability to summon gods. However, Kevin never actually speaks.
* KnifeNut: In fact, he's the only member of the seven that doesn't use firearms.
* MasterOfDisguise: To the point where he can turn invisible.
* TheVoiceless: Because he would summon the gods if he spoke. He actually has some [[DummiedOut unused voice clips]] in the game's files, though.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: The only time he puts on a shirt is if he's in disguise.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Smith Syndicate - Allies]]
!! Iwazaru (Vincel Dill Boris VII Iwazaruscof)
[[quoteright:335:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/iwazaru16.jpg]]
--> ''"Master. We're in a tight spot. A very tight spot."''

A servant of the Smiths dressed in what seems to be bondage gear, he speaks primarily in nonsense, along with the occasional gameplay tip. Always starts talking with "Master" and ends with "In the name of Harman...". May be a Remnant Psyche, but unlike the characters in that section, it's never confirmed.

* AmbiguouslyHuman: It's unclear whether he's a Remnant Psyche or a still-living human. [[spoiler:Or a Heaven Smile, or Kun Lan.]]
* CatchPhrase: "Master...", "We are in a tight spot!" and "In the name of Harman..."
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Goes on a number of off-screen sidequests during Alter Ego to collect items needed to complete the level.
* {{Irony}}: "Iwazaru" is Japanese for "Speak no evil", but he's awfully chatty.
* MysteriousPast: No one says anything about his backstory except for his connections to Mizaru and Kikazaru. [[spoiler:This means there's something wrong with him, since all of the Remnant Psyches have a backstory. Turns out he may be Kun Lan, or... something.]]
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: The reason he only shows up in Cloudman once, barring the Iwazaru Notes.

!! Samantha Sitbon/Smith
->VA: Heidi Anderson
[[quoteright:175:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/samantha_sitbon.jpg]]
-->''"I don't have time for this shit, you know I'm busy with my classes!"''
-->''"The Master is awake."''

Harman's caretaker. When the lights are on, she's a moody, foul-mouthed AlphaBitch who thinks nothing of physically abusing the comatose Harman and even raping him at one point. When the lights are off, she's a perfect and loyal {{Meido}} servant to Harman. She saves your game for you, but only when "on the clock" as the Save Maid.\\
She was one of Harman's personae, as Samantha Smith. When Harman is wounded and enters his near-comatose state, she gives up her work as an assassin to "help" him.

* AllThereInTheManual: Much of the backstory on her comes from ''Hand in killer7''.
* NinjaMaid: [[spoiler:It isn't shown, but she's also an assassin, and is the one who killed Johnny Gagnon.]]
* {{Meido}}: When the lights are off.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: ''Hand in killer7'' reveals she's only "helping" Harman as part of a scholarship deal. [[spoiler:This is only half true. The money is actually coming from Checkbox.]]
* SplitPersonality: The reason as to why she behaves differently depending on the status of the lights. This is confirmed in ''Hand in killer7''. Samantha Smith was one of Harman's personae and is now his obedient [[NinjaMaid assassin maid]], and Samantha Sitbon is the foul-mouthed college student.
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:Most of what she does to Harman is done out of Checkbox using her as an "alter ego" via hypnotism.]]

!! Christopher Mills
->VA: Bart Flynn
[[quoteright:210:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/christopher_mills.jpg]]
-->''"What can you do when the whole world has its eyes on you?"''

The informant to the killer7 and the closest friend to the group. Like Samantha, he's not a member of the group but is close to them and knows everything about them. He knows almost everything there is to know about the government and the group.

* AllThereInTheManual: He was previously an informant to Curtis Blackburn, and is an assassin himself. He's not a good one, but he is one.
* CatchPhrase: [[SpySpeak "Hello, Mr. Smith, the election is drawing near, have you decided on your vote? If you haven't, please let the Republic Party make the most of your precious vote, thank you and have a nice day."]]
* HisNameIs: [[spoiler:Is assassinated while trying to reveal big secrets about the country.]]
* KarmicDeath: A man who was close friends with assassins, assigned them missions, and is an assassin himself, albiet not that good, is killed by an assassin himself.
* KeeperOfForbiddenKnowledge: A human example. [[spoiler: When he tries to tell Garcian the truth about his past, he is shot.]]
* MrExposition: For the basic storyline. Travis tells you more throughout the level.

!! Mad Doctor
A doctor living inside the television set. He converts blood into serum for the purposes of leveling up your characters.

* AmbiguouslyHuman: Doesn't seem to be a Remnant Psyche, but at the same time, he lives in a TV.
* MadDoctor: It's literally his name.
* TheVoiceless: He's never seen speaking, and his mouth is covered.

!! Gary Wanderers ("Steward")
A man who replaces Samantha's save game duty late in the game. Very little is known about him, but he does his job well.

* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: You can only find out his name by asking Iwazaru.
* TheJeeves: All there is to say about him.
* TheVoiceless: He probably ''does'' speak, but seeing as his only purpose is to save your game and thus he never appears in a cutscene, we never witness it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Smith Syndicate - Remnant Psyches]]
!! Travis Bell
[[quoteright:201:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/travis_bell.jpg]]
-->''"A blood-red flower's gonna go up like a firework. And it's up to the owner Fukushima to prevent it from hitting and killing everybody. So, Chief, which side are you on? The homeland? Or Japan?"''

The most major recurring Remnant Psyche that follows the killer7 around wherever they go, commenting on the situation and providing often confusing exposition. He was Harman Smith's first target. Wears a shirt with large, usually pink text that changes every time you see him. Not to be confused with [[VideoGame/NoMoreHeroes that other Travis]]... [[EpilepticTrees probably]].

* AmbiguouslyGay: If some of the flamboyant messages on his shirts weren't enough of an indication, he seems to have found Harman's assassinating him an arousing experience.
* CatchPhrase: Usually says "straight up" at least once in each of his monologues.
* HyperactiveSprite: A few. One of his more notable appearances has him incessantly pelvic thrusting.
* MrExposition: Though by his own admission he's not very good at it. Still, he usually has hints to whatever puzzle you need to solve.
* MetaGuy: His casual nature makes him feel more connected to the player than most.
* OnlySaneMan: Possibly the most relatable character.

!! Susie Sumner
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/susie_sumner_2.png]]
-->''"Well, hello, Smith. ( ´-`)ノ"''
A complete lunatic. She likes to play PeekABooCorpse with her severed head (if she still has a body we never see it) and then offer the syndicate an elemental ring for solving puzzles after regaling tales of her bloody life.

* AxCrazy: She killed several before her own death.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Since the last ring is given in Encounter, Part 2, she disappears afterwards.
* DisproportionateRetribution: Her boyfriend hit her by accident when he used a rock that was too big for the "window call" trick, she took her dad's hunting rifle and blew his brains out. She also blew up her school facility (during school hours) because she just hated school that much.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Hates them all, except possibly the male Smiths.
* {{Emoticon}}: Speaks with Kanji-based emoticons that some western audiences may be unfamiliar with (she often uses (`?´) when flustered, for example).
* EvenEvilHasStandards: When she tried to contact the killer7 to hire them, they were so disgusted by what a psychopath she was they killed her out of principle.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: She was originally a slightly frustrated high school student, but after accidentally killing her mom, she got the taste for killing and embarked on a bloody murder streak that didn't end until she went after the killer7.
* {{Leitmotif}}: A ghostly, buzzing theme plays to let you know rooms where Suzie is present.
* PeekABooCorpse: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]], being that she's just a ghostly head she likes to manifest herself in cramped spaces like dryers and floor cabinets.

!! Kess [=BloodySunday=]
[[quoteright:143:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kess_bloodysunday.png]]
--> ''"Then before I knew it I was lost, all alone again. Please help me! I can't see a thing."''

A boy who was a brutal murderer and good at making bombs. [[MeaningfulName Was killed on a Sunday by the killer7.]] He knows how to defeat the bosses, including the Queen Smiles and [[GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere Ceramic Smile]].

* CamelCase: His last name is written in this for some reason.
* CreepyChild: To the point of being a murderer in life, and still very creepy in death.
* MeaningfulName: He was killed on a Sunday.
* MrExposition: Cryptically describes how to beat the majority of the bosses.
\\
\\
\\

!! Yoon-Hyun/True Mask
[[quoteright:150:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yoonhyun.jpg]]
--> ''"Mr. Smith. I sell information, yes?"''
--> ''"Loser. I am the True Mask, and I shall guide you."''

An informant to the killer7 who was killed and became a Remnant Psyche. He carries around a mask that "craves Thick Blood" and, if you shoot it, his personality changes, you lose Thick Blood, and gives expanded hints. According to Johnny Gagnon, he was the owner of the Union Hotel.

* BloodLust: The Mask. Literally stated - "the mask lusts for thick blood". In the bonus [[spoiler:killer8]] mode, the Mask craves blood whether or not Yoon-Hyun is wearing the mask.
* CatchPhrase: As the True Mask: "Tomorrow, it could be you."
* FlippingTheBird: Flips two of them if you shoot him.
* PunnyName: Yoon-Hyun was the owner of the ''Union'' Hotel.
* SplitPersonality: It depends on whether or not the Mask is on.

!! Mizaru and Kikazaru

The ex-wife and handler of Iwazaru, respectively. Mizaru serves under KAEDE, and Kikazaru points out the locations of Soul Shells.

* ThoseTwoGuys: They're linked by their relations to Iwazaru, and have little backstory otherwise.
* TheVoiceless: In contrast to the chatty Iwazaru, they fulfill their purposes in silence.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Heaven Smile]]
!! Kun Lan
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kun_lan.png]]
->VA: Joe Lala

-->''"A new generation of children will bring order to this age..."''

Harman's rival and friend, and leader of the Heaven Smiles. A godlike figure with the power of life in his hand, able to grant immortality to whoever he chooses. Despite being set up as an antagonist for the killer7, [[FriendlyEnemy he and Harman remain civil towards one another]], and the two are often seen playing chess together. His war with Harman is eternal.

* AffablyEvil: He remains polite to everyone, even though he's a terrorist.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: Similarly to Harman.
* BigBad: As the creator of the Heaven Smiles. The plot ends up focusing on other things by the end, making his status as this unclear, though.
* TheChessmaster: Literally and otherwise, competes with Harman (who does note that Kun Lan is a really terrible chess player).
* FriendlyEnemy: To Harman. They have opposite goals, but don't have issues interacting with each other.
* GigglingVillain: He's where the Heaven Smile get it from, after all.
* GoodPowersBadPeople: He has the power of life, but [[LightIsNotGood uses it to kill and terrify]]. Contrast Harman, who pretty much specializes in ShootTheDog.
* TheHyena: His laughter is just as insane and hysterical as the Smiles he creates.
* TheUnfought: If he isn't the Last Shot Smile, then he's one of these. [[spoiler:You do fight his angel projection early on, but you never actually have a proper showdown with him - the closest thing there is is an ambiguously symbolic cutscene in a level full of flashbacks, in which Garcian and/or young Harman may or may not have shot up both him and old Harman.]]

!! Heaven Smile
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/heaven_smile.jpg]]
-->''"At heaven's command, we will kill the unwanted. We must get rid of bad trees from their roots. I hope that you are not one of them."''

A terrorist organization [[TerroristsWithoutACause hell-bent on causing terror for its own sake]], headed by Kun Lan. Heaven Smiles are ordinary people infected by a virus that turns them into strangely coloured, ever-smirking, ever-cackling zombies, whose only means of attack is suicide-bombing their target. They are still easily dispatched [[AttackItsWeakPoint by shooting their weak points]], turning them into clouds of blood.

* ActionBomb: Their defining trait.
* AttackItsWeakPoint: Low-level smiles can be shot anywhere, but shooting their weak point is a OneHitKill. Eventually, more Smile types appear that can ''only'' be killed by hitting their weakpoint, and a couple will actually teleport right in front of you and explode if you hit them anywhere ''but'' their weak point.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: Giant Smiles.
* BodyHorror: Just the whole process of becoming a Smile is bad enough. But then you start running into Smiles that don't even look ''remotely'' human.
* ChasingYourTail: The Ceramic Smile.
* DegradedBoss: A couple of the miniboss Smiles become regular enemies later on.
* {{Determinator}}: They'll keep shuffling towards you even without their heads. Shoot off one or more of their legs, and they'll just crawl (in fact, they crawl even faster than they walk.)
* EyeBeams: The Laser Smile.
* TheHyena: ''Every sound'' they make is some kind of laughter.
* LaughablyEvil: Some of the Smiles manage to be pretty silly, like Smiles that jog towards you making strange noises, or contort themselves into a ball and ''roll'' towards you.
* LaughingMad: They make a maniac laugh when they're doing their suicidal explosion towards a Smith.
* MadeOfIron: The Protector series of Smiles can only be killed by Mask's grenades. The vanilla Protector Smile only requires the basic grenade, while Protector Z needs a level 1 charge attack, and the Protector ZZ needs a fully charged attack.
* MetalSlime: Micro and Camillia smiles. Both give huge amounts of thick blood when killed (and the Micros awaken all the sleeping Smiths,) but Micros are small and hard to hit, and fly towards you really quickly (fortunately, the explosion doesn't hurt you, but it does blind the player) and Camillia's sprint as fast as they can away from you and then explode if you shoot them without killing them or get too close.
* MookMaker: Duplicator and Mother Smiles.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: Extremely different, to the point where them being more or less zombies doesn't cross most players' minds.
* SlasherSmile: More of a massive rictus grin, but it serves the same purpose.
* UniqueEnemy: The Ceramic Smile could count, as it's only fought once like the mini-boss Smiles, but unlike them it's not fought inside the Vinculum Gate.
* WasOnceAMan: Are created from humans.
* ZombieGait: Both played straight and averted. Most Smiles will leisurely shamble towards you, but certain types will run or outright sprint at you. Some Smiles (like the Mithril and Timer Smiles) will do both.

!! Gatekeeper

The man who guards the Vinculum Gate, which leads to the Colosseum in which new Heaven Smiles are tested. Although he's in league with Kun Lan, he will let the Smiths through if they provide him with Soul Shells.

!! Curtis Blackburn
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/curtis_blackburn.png]]
->VA: Creator/AlastairDuncan

-->''"Doesn't hurt to have a hobby after retirement. What do you think?"''

An assassin currently in the business of abducting orphans and harvesting their organs to sell on the black market for use in creating the Heaven Smile. He was once the mentor of Dan Smith, and was also the one to kill him. He seems to have a supernatural control over light and darkness, and has an adopted daughter - AYAME Blackburn - who he has raised in his footsteps.

* ArcVillain: Of ''Encounter''.
* DecapitationPresentation: Does this to Pedro with his daughter's head.
* DisturbedDoves: "We shoot when the bird flies." [[spoiler:It coos just before it takes off.]]
* DuelToTheDeath: His boss fight with Dan.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: His introduction involves him gunning down an entire building for seemingly no reason, all without a care in the world.
* EvilAlbino: Is incredibly pale, and incredibly evil.
* EvilMentor: To Dan.
* FinalSpeech: Subverted. He tries to give one, but Dan interrupts him.
* GunsAkimbo: Wields duel pistols.
* HeroKiller: Killed Dan a long time ago. Granted, Dan isn't much of a hero.
* KarmicDeath: Gets shot by the man he supposedly killed, and he gets killed by the machine he uses to cleanse the little girls of their organs.
* MurdererPOV: His introduction cutscene.
* OrganTheft: His specialty, along with killing.
* PsychoForHire: A hired hitman working for the Heaven Smile.
* {{Sadist}}: Expressed glee when he killed his partner, Pedro.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Never raises his voice, even when killing people.
* TheSociopath: Cares for no one, not even his partner, Pedro.
* TheStoic: A much more calm character than most in this game.
* WalkOnWater: Kind of. He's able to lie down and stand on water, almost as if it were a bed.
* WouldHitAGirl: The children he murdered, along with a few of his victims, where all girls.
* WouldHurtAChild: Doesn't mind raping children and harvesting their organs.

!! AYAME Blackburn
[[quoteright:283:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ayame_blackburn.png]]

-->''"Like a flower that blooms in the soil of our carnal and corrupt society, I shall administer retribution to stray vermin that graze this land. For I am the Chairman of the Education Guidance Council! Ayame Blackburn, survive!"''

Curtis Blackburn's adopted daughter. Her weapon of choice is a machine gun and as Curtis' protégé she possesses the same powers over light and shadow as he does. She is a CosplayOtakuGirl who wears an animegao kigurumi mask and fashions herself as a MagicalGirl.

* CosplayOtakuGirl: Possibly Curtis' doing, see below.
* DaddysLittleVillain: Though, given how terrible Curtis is, it's likely she was abused into this position.
* TheDragon: To Curtis.
* KillerRabbit: She'll tear you apart if you aren't careful.
* MagicalGirl: Acts like one, but with machine guns instead of magic.
* TakeThat: One big stab at Japanese politics and otaku culture.

!! Greg Nightmare and the Seven Black Smiles

-->"''Haah haah haah...''"

The Secretary of Education. Saying any more would be a spoiler.

* FinalBoss: The last boss that you can actually lose to.
* HeroKiller: The Seven Black Smiles, the only things in the game that can kill off killer7 personae for good.
* HopelessBossFight: The second form, when Nightmare creates the Black Smiles, until Garcian comes out.
* OneHitKill: The suicidal explosions of the Black Smiles can ''and'' will kill the Smiths instantly. Garcian is the only one who can avoid the fate by grabbing the Golden Gun (in Killer8 mode, [[spoiler:Young Harman bites the bulled from the Smile aimed at Garcian, so the latter simply has to grab the Gun to kill the boss in one hit]].
* PsychoRangers: The Seven Black Smiles could be seen as a more serious and less colorful take on this. Like the usual trope, there's one for every one of the protagonists, but unlike the trope, they don't have EvilOpposite personalities or anything - they just show up and start suicide bombing, one by one]].
* MilkmanConspiracy: The most powerful man in the country, despite the lack of power that his job title may imply.
* MookMaker: Nightmare makes Special Black Smiles that can kill anyone for good in one shot and are invincible to anything except the Golden Gun.

!! Last Shot Smile

-->''"AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"''

The last Heaven Smile.

* AllThereInTheManual: ''Hand In killer7'''s chronology gives the name "Last Shot." It also tells a very confusing tale regarding his creation, seemingly invalidating the idea that he's [[spoiler:Kun Lan and/or Iwazaru]], despite the very same book stating that he's [[spoiler:Kun Lan]] somewhere else.
* ArcVillain: Of ''Lion'', along with Matsuoka.
* HeWasRightThereAllAlong: He's in [[spoiler:Garcian's Trailerhouse.]]
* MadeOfIron: While the invulnerable [[spoiler:Black Smiles]] finally went down in one hit from the Golden Gun, this guy takes five hits from it, implying a large amount of durability.
* PostFinalBoss: The final "fight".
* ShockingSwerve: Invoked... [[MindScrew probably]]. His identity seems designed to irritate and confuse the player more than anything, unless you put together the mess that is [[spoiler:the multiple Harmans]], which ''could'' lead you to figure out how this makes sense. He is - or at least, looks like - [[spoiler:Iwazaru, who has Kun Lan's face]].
* ZeroEffortBoss: All you do is chase him and then shoot him down.

[[folder:Other Antagonists]]
!! Kenjiro Matsuoka
[[quoteright:213:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kenjiro_matsuoka.jpg]]
-->''"[[LampshadeHanging I'm Japanese, how the hell should I know]]?"''

The timid new leader of the U.N. party, mocked by party seniors. In his very first scene, Akiba and Kurahashi order him to commit suicide, as Japan will most likely be destroyed by missiles. After he shoots their heads, he becomes a spiritual [[TheDragon Dragon]] to Kun Lan and gains a lot of confidence.

* ArcVillain: ''Smile, Part 1'' is about taking him down. He returns as one of the two villains of ''Lion'', along with the Last Shot Smile.
* TheDragon: Sort of. Kun Lan approves of him and assists him in his rise to power, but the U.N. and the Heaven Smile are separate groups.
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential / VideoGameCaringPotential: [[spoiler:One or the other. At the end of the game, you can alter the ending by choosing to kill or spare him]]. Might be considered an aversion, though, given how [[spoiler:he frames the choice as regarding what he symbolizes, and the consequences of his life]]. The motivations that drive the player, however, could easily be these tropes as well.
* ZeroEffortBoss: [[spoiler:Because he's not actually fighting you. You choose whether to kill him or not, and if you do he just lets you do it, but you can also choose to just walk right on past.]]

!! Julia Kisugi
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/julia_kisugi.png]]
-->''"A pet of the United States... interesting."''

The secretary to Toru Fukushima, working in his restaurant. She's really another assassin sent to retrieve the Yakumo document.

* ActionGirl: Obviously, being an assassin.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: After her defeat, she [[AteHisGun eats a grenade]] and promptly explodes into gibs.
* TheMole: She works for the Liberal Party.

->VA: James Horan

-->''"Lucha Libre is for kids! But, you know, you are great with the kids, mask man!"''

A chef working for Toru Fukushima, and a fan of MASK. Like Julia, he too is attempting to get ahold of the Yakumo document.

* ArcVillain: Of ''Sunset, Part 2''.
* BetterToDieThanBeKilled: [[spoiler: When wounded, he shoots himself rather than let the killer7 take care of him.]]
* GuiltyPleasures: Despite the quote above saying otherwise, he LOVES MASK's fighting style.
* TheMole: You know you're a big target when you have two of them. Poor Fukushima...

!! Hiroyasu Kurahashi and Shinya Akiba
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/old_men.jpg]]
-->''"This is EXACTLY the reason I hate young pricks like him."''

Two elderly members of the Japanese UN party. They goad Matsuoka into killing them, but they stay alive due to Kun Lan's influence and powers.

* EvilOldFolks: ''Undead'' evil old folks.
* GrumpyOldMan: They ''hate'' the younger generation.
* KlingonPromotion: This is how they rose in politics and society.

!! Andrei Ulmeyda
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andrei_ulmeyda.jpg]]
->VA: CamClarke

-->''"I am a man with a plan!"''

A cult leader with a bright yellow Texas Bronco T-shirt and glorious afro. Once an average mailman, Ulmeyda found a portion of the Yakumo Policy and used the instructions contained within it to establish a powerful cult devoted to him and become the head of a multi-million dollar corporation. In the ''Cloudman'' chapter, Ulmeyda challenges the killer7 to come to his city and track him down.

* ADateWithRosiePalms: Mentioned. "We're talking guys who beat off ''four times a day!''"
* AffablyEvil: To the point where he's the least like an antagonist you can find in the game. He's a REALLY nice guy.
* ArcVillain: Of Cloudman.
* DarkMessiah: His incredible charisma and business acumen is rather disturbing, to the point where [[LampshadeHanging several characters comment on it]]. Although despite that he's actually not that bad a guy.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: His former boss sees him as this. [[spoiler:This is thanks to the Yakumo, in reality.]]
* FunnyAfro: Has a giant afro. This is the reason why Iwazaru [[WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes doesn't appear in Cloudman.]] [[spoiler:It's also his weak point during his boss fight.]]
* ICannotSelfTerminate: "I told ya to ''kill'' me... now I'm going '''MAD'''!"
* '''LargeHam''': To EXTREME levels. He's a fan favorite for this reason.
* ReligionOfEvil: Ultimately averted. Even though he built a cult around himself, he doesn't really have any evil plans, he's just eccentric.
* SuicideByCop: The reason why he calls out Garcian on live TV is because he knows the Smiths are the only people who can kill Heaven Smiles, [[spoiler:so he wants them to kill him if he goes bad]].
* TragicMonster: Once he [[spoiler:turns into a Heaven Smile]].

!! Trevor Pearlharbor
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/trevor_pearlharbor.PNG]]
-->''"I already wrote it. I wrote the story, so YOU'LL die."''

Writer of the Handsome Man comic book. When he is suspected for causing the real life group based on them to go rogue, the killer7 are asked to take him out.

* AffablyEvil: From his one cutscene, he's shown not to be a pretty bad guy, at worst arrogant.
* ArcVillain: Of ''Alter Ego'', at least until [[spoiler:he's killed by Handsome Black]].
* TheFaceless: You never see him in the game's normal graphics, just in anime graphics. If you take a look at his picture, his face has a shadow over it.
* MeaningfulName: In a ridiculously roundabout way. Basically, the word for the Handsome Men's kind of multicolored group is sentai, which literally means task force. Before its usage in pop culture, it was used instead during World War II; [[spoiler:Handsome Black kills Trevor Pearlharbor. In other words, just as the WWII sentai bombed Pearl Harbor, the modern-age sentai killed Pearlharbor]].
* PsychicPowers: How he knows what the Handsome Men will do.
* SmugSuper: He is rather proud that he has control of the Handsome Men, [[spoiler:or so he thinks.]]
* TheUnfought: [[spoiler:Is accidentally killed by Handsome Black.]]

!! The Handsome Men

[[caption-width-right:350:From left to right: Handsome Pink, Handsome Purple, Handsome Light Brown, Handsome Red, Handsome Blue, Handsome Dead, Handsome White Pearl, Handsome Gold. Not pictured: Handsome Black.]]
-->''"We are the punishing rangers!"''

A set of nine multicoloured {{Sentai}} superheroes who act as a counterpart to the killer7. Originally designed by the military to fight the Heaven Smile, they defected and began committing terrorism instead. Their actions and targets would be predicted in advance by the artist of the Handsome Men comic, Trevor Pearlharbor.

* ArcVillain: Of ''Alter Ego''.
* CutsceneBoss: Handsome Black, who's killed by Dan in an anime cutscene.
* DecoyProtagonist: Of his own story, at least. Handsome Red acts like the leader, but Harman kills him easily in the first round of the battle. [[spoiler:This is because Handsome Pink, aka LOVE Wilcox, is the actual protagonist of their team]].
* {{Expy}}: Of ''SuperSentai'' and ''PowerRangers.''
* ManBehindTheMan: [[spoiler:Handsome Pink, aka LOVE Wilcox, to Trevor Pearlharbor and Handsome Red]].
* MirrorMatch: The Handsome Men wield the exact same weapon as their opponent in the one-on-one matches and only attack when they do. Harman's opponent even shows up to the match with his own wheelchair.
* OddNameOut: What the heck kind of color is "Dead"?
* ThePsychoRangers: To the killer7. In the in-universe comic book, the killer7 is this to them, which fits their respective personalities more.
* QuirkyMinibossSquad
* ScriptedBattle: When you finally fight them, it's in a series of one-on-one matchups. Technically, you have control over the characters, but the Handsome Men only attack when you do, and the same characters win and lose every time.
* TheUnfought: Handsome Pink [[spoiler:reveals her true identity as a hacker named LOVE Wilcox. She teleports away instead of battling Garcian]].

!! Benjamin Keane
[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/benjamin_keane.jpg]]
->VA: SteveBlum

-->''"What's a country? Who are the people? What are politicians? Who knows... I just wanted to become President!"''

A presidential candidate and the principal of Colburn Elementary School. Is the target of Smile, Part 2, and is waiting patiently in the Principal's Office. [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking He knows the secret on how to pick up women with 100% success.]]

* ArcVillain: Of ''Smile, Part 2'', as according to Garcian's photo, he's the target.
* TheCasanova: Thinks he's this, if his touting of picking up women is anything to go by. Given the low quality of his advice, though, he probably isn't.
* CutsceneBoss: Is fought through a cutscene of RussianRoulette.
* '''RussianRoulette''': One of the most famous scenes from the game. Garcian wins, Keane shares the secret on how to pick up women with 100% success. If Keane wins, Garcian has to kill the president.

!! Emir Parkreiner

Somebody who paid Johnny Gagnon to investigate the killer7. Throughout the game, you receive his mail via carrier pigeon. Later on, at the Coburn Elementary School, the killer7 finds tapes detailing an investigation into whoever he really is.

* AxCrazy: He has the nickname The Bloody Heartland for a reason.
* DarkMessiah: Despite being feared for his actions, characters like Holbert still react with some sort of reverence when they see him, and he's littered with symbolism.
* PlayableEpilogue: He's the only character playable in it, detailing something he does three years after the other levels. [[spoiler:The name on the pause menu still says "Garcian", but all [[AllThereInTheManual extra material]] seems to indicate that he's accepted himself as Emir]].
* {{Reincarnation}}: [[spoiler:Aside from reincarnating into Garcian, he also died in 1952, the "fall of Japan", coming back as the insane killer he's known as. Symbolic? Of course it is.]]
* SplitPersonality: The current incarnations of [[spoiler:the killer7]] are this to him, not [[spoiler:Harman]].
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:Garcian doesn't realize he's him until the end]].
* WalkingSpoiler: The biggest in the game.
* ZeroEffortBoss: Shoot the third eye and he'll kill himself. It's very likely symbolic.

[[folder:Notable Others]]
!! Johnny Gagnon ("Speedster")

--> ''"My name is Johnny Gagnon, otherwise known as "Speedster." I kinda get excited when I slit a guy's throat. I know that sounds sick, but..."''

A man hired by a man named Emir to gather info on the killer7. He does so extraordinarily and sends letters to him via carrier pigeons, but Emir never pays him back. Attempts to infiltrate Garcian's trailer, but gets himself killed.

* TheGhost: He is never seen in game.
* KilledMidSentence: [[spoiler:Samantha offs him in the middle of his final memo.]]
* MysteriousInformant: Accidentally becomes one of these to the killer7, who are receiving his letters intended for Emir.

!! Edo Macalister

--> ''"I remember the faces of all our guests, sir. Even your bag."''

The manager of the Union Hotel, formerly the owner of the Flower, Sun, and Rain hotel on Lospass Island. He was a previously a major character in ''VideoGame/FlowerSunAndRain''.

* TheCameo: Would be just this if all he did was greet Garcian, but his mysterious nature teases at something more going on.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Gymnopedie No. 1 by Erik Satie, a recurring theme in Flower, Sun and Rain as well.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: No explanation or resolution is given for what he's doing here, how he vanishes, and why he knows Garcian. Already a mysterious character in his first game, his presence here makes him even more so.

!! Dimitri Nightmare / THREE EYES

A man sitting next to Harman in a spoilery scene late in the game. That's it. Only a small amount of information are given about him in "Hand in killer7", but his connections to Harman and possibly Greg Nightmare (due to the shared last names) hint at something important.

* AmbiguouslyHuman: Suggested in the book. [[spoiler:He was originally killed and assimilated into Harman, but apparently was pushed out of the system, supposedly vanishing. His presence in the Union Hotel, however, would suggest he's alive again somehow.]]
* BiggerBad: A theory due to a line in "Hand in killer7", stating that Harman and Kun Lan will battle "fearing HIS apparition". Who it's referring to is unknown, but this character is who fans usually point to.
* TheVoiceless: From what is seen.
* WalkingSpoiler: Everything he's connected to is a spoiler, but there's very little to know about him even then.

!! Holbert

--> ''"[[{{Catchphrase}} It's Holbert.]]"''

An FBI agent sent to Coburn Elementary School to figure out its connection to the election system. While doing so, he investigates the enigmatic Emir Parkreiner. The killer7 finds his tapes strewn throughout the school, describing the events of his investigation.

* ApocalypticLog: His tapes.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[Series/TwinPeaks Dale Cooper]].
* TheGhost: You never see him, you only hear his voice.
* PosthumousCharacter: Rather predictably. [[spoiler:He was killed by Emir]].

[[folder:''Hand in killer7'' Exclusive Characters]]

!! Jaco Checkbox

--> "Heaven Smiles . . . they're horrible. Anonymous, infinite in number, and
--> always showing up . . . everyone's scared of them. But what if you see a familiar face
--> among them? A roommate, an old lover, someone you work with, ready to suicide-bomb along with the rest . . . wouldn't that be more truly horrific?"

Jaco Checkbox (which isn't his real name) is arguably the central character in the ''Hand in killer7.'' He is an FBI agent who despised the Heaven Smiles when, while Heaven Smiles attack a bank, his unit is wiped out and he enters the destroyed bank to find his wife and daughter in the middle of transforming, at which point he kills them. He then hacks into Miss Jacob, a fortune telling machine, and learns of the existence of the Last Shot Smile. The catch is that he will not come into existence unless 49 predictions in a row come true. He then meets Samantha, a friend of his dead daughter. After she mentions working for Harman and Garcian, Checkbox, knowing who they are, pays Samantha to hypnotize Harman via abuse, as the killer7 are key parts of each prediction. He also talks to Andrei Ulmeyda, convincing him to make his public challenge to Garcian. He eventually learns where Kun Lan is and goes to kill him. His fate is unknown.

* AdultFear: Having to MercyKill his wife and child.
* ArchEnemy: While he hates all Smiles, he specifically wants to bring the Last Shot Smile into existence and either kill it or have the killer7 do it to wipe the Smiles out.
* BigGood: He was responsible for choosing the missions. He brought the Last Shot Smile into existence for Emir to kill. He was responsible for stopping the Heaven Smile threat.]]
* TheChessmaster: He learns what should happen, he causes them to happen.
* CoolOldGuy: He outright states he's old.
* DirtyOldMan: He...likes Handsome Pink. And fantasizes. And traces her inner thigh.
* MercyKill: His wife and daughter, rather tragically.
* UnwittingPawn: He calls himself this in the grand scheme of things, protecting the King Piece, the killer7. Doesn't mean his actions still weren't responsible for most of the game.

!! Jack Foley

A writer for the magazine "Spreading the Truth." three articles are included: One where he interviews a man who worked for Kun Lan, one about the seldom-talked about Ishizaka Corporation, and one about Ulmeyda's First Life, Inc. He dies in a car crash after the last one.

!! Mr. A

An unnamed scientist interviewed by Foley and given this alias. He reveals he and two other men worked with Kun Lan and was responsible for the more complex Smile types. The three were turned into Potential Heaven Smiles, meaning that they are slowly becoming Smiles. The process is complete by the end of the interview, and he becomes a Smile.

* TheEvilGenius: One of three for Kun Lan.
