Nagatoro and Senpai in a rare moment of peace

Nagatoro: Please call me Nagatoro. Glad to make your acquaintance, Senpai.
Senpai: I... I'm
Nagatoro: Oh, I don't care about your name, Senpai; Senpai is just fine as just Senpai.
—Ch. 3

Nagatoro and Senpai are a couple of high school students at Kazehaya High School. She, a popular, athletic, and attractive girl in her first year, and him, a lanky, twitchy, antisocial, and dorky boy in her second year, spend their afternoons together at the Arts Club room where she endlessly henpecks him.

    In General

  • A Darker Me: Senpai assumes his rare strokes of genius when an opportunity to be suave to Nagatoro presents itself to be little more than delusions of masculinity at best, and actions that would earn him a restraining order at worst. Little does he know that Nagatoro wants to see this manlier side of him.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: While the two are love interests in both versions, Nagatoro and Senpai are an actual Official Couple in the original webcomic, ever since the first installment where he asks her out and she agrees. The manga, and by extension the anime, go for the more traditional Will They or Won't They? approach between the two.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Invoked and played for laughs. Almost every other interaction between Nagatoro and Senpai consists of this, Nagatoro prodding Senpai's ribs for him to have the cojones to act upon even his basest instincts.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: The main point of the manga. Behind all the teasing games, it's shown that these are two young people who have a profound love for one another... but completely suck at conveying it.
  • Best Friend: They are all but stated to be this to each other, short of romantic progression.
  • Birds of a Feather: Implied Trope. It's shown that dealing with fundamental mutual emotions such as embarrassment, jealousy, and excitement, Nagatoro and Senpai behave rather similarly and assume the same attitudes. The fact that this happens lends credibility to the possibility that they aren't so different, and this is one of the aspects that fuel the development of their relationship, as they start to realize that such is the case.
  • Cool Kid-and-Loser Friendship: Their relationship has overtones of this, overlapping with Bully Turned Buddy. Nagatoro, in this case, is the "Cool Kid", with Senpai being the "Loser".
  • Didn't Think This Through: Nagatoro's gist concerning her approach methods towards Senpai always ends up becoming this. She wants to approach Senpai with enthusiasm, but comes off too strongly on him in both actions and words, as she has a noted poor gauge to measure said approach, usually ending up getting out of her hands, either hurting Senpai (as shown in the first two chapters) and/or making either herself, or Senpai, or both end up a flustered mess. The fact that Senpai lacks both experience and courage doesn't help either, as his initiatives end up escalating the situation unintentionally. In summary, they want to become closer, but they both utterly suck at it.
  • Everyone Can See It: Nagatoro's friends are well aware of how much their Hayacchi likes Senpai, how much he likes her in return, and how much the two of them suck at conveying it.
  • Fetishized Abuser: In the original Pixiv sets, this is the nature of Nagatoro and Senpai's relationship, where she plays a dominatrix straight, to the point that she is called "sado-dere"; in the manga, their relationship is considerably less malicious and abusive, and her abusiveness is usually to get him to defend himself. Plus, they're not an item (yet).
  • Got Me Doing It: Senpai has a very specific hand gesture he uses when he's trying to redirect the conversation, which looks like he's grabbing a pretend box and setting it to the side. Nagatoro likes poking fun at this gesture and his attempts to deflect but she eventually starts redirecting conversation this way herself.
  • Just Friends: Regardless of any romantic progress in their story, it's shown that Senpai and Nagatoro care about each other on a fundamental level, and start enjoying each other's company more and more as time goes by. They might not be boyfriend and girlfriend, but they're friends at the very least. They also share the tendency to deny that they're an item.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: They are this to each other mutually, as they tend to bring the best out of themselves just by each other's presence:
    • Through Nagatoro, Senpai has learned to be more assertive and has gained agency towards his decisions, becoming more vocal and open, and obtaining the company and friendship that he sorely lacked and didn't want to recognize that he craved;
    • Through Senpai, Nagatoro has found a subject worthy of the affection and the joy she doesn't want to show to others, and by being there, Senpai has brought a true and fundamental interest from Nagatoro to mutually enjoy their time together and grow as people by bringing out the best of each other.
  • Lonely Together: Senpai is an outcast and a loner, while Nagatoro, despite being popular and attractive, cannot bring herself to like any of her male classmates and has no significant relationship with the opposite sex. They become almost inseparable.
  • Mirror Character: Despite how different they look, they are both internally insecure people with a hard time with people.
  • Nudity Equals Honesty: Some of their most frank heart-to-heart chats happen while one or both are naked in each other's presence albeit they're separated by a wall in the showers (or not).
  • Oblivious to Love: Played for laughs. Both Nagatoro and Senpai have a really rough idea of their attraction towards one another, but their mutual inexperience in the subject makes them comically unaware of just how much they like each other, and it's way more than they realize, resulting on them ending up in really compromising situations. All in all, Nagatoro mistakes Senpai's attraction for mere lust, while Senpai mistakes Nagatoro's attraction for teasing. Of course, they mutually proceed in the hopes that it's not the case.
  • Opposites Attract: Although they are secretly more similar than they look, at first sight, they could not possibly be two more different people: Nagatoro is a popular, athletic, attractive, aggressive, and showy girl, while Senpai is a loner, morose, lanky, unassuming, passive and twitchy boy.
  • Pitbull Dates Puppy: Short of actually dating, this is the dynamic between Nagatoro and Senpai. She's loud, boisterous, and aggressive in the relationship, while Senpai is submissive and led by the nose.
  • Relationship Upgrade: After around a hundred chapters of Will They or Won't They? and an entire arc building up to the confession, Senpai and Nagatoro have officially start dating.
  • Show, Don't Tell: Senpai and Nagatoro's romance progression is mainly characterized by manifestations of mutual affection and poignant gestures, rather than direct communication.
  • True Love is Exceptional: Nagatoro's friends, especially Yoshi (Sakura in the anime), like to pair Nagatoro with more superfluous and childish guys, who are always mercilessly turned down by Nagatoro. Turns out, Nagatoro likes them twitchy and wimpy, like Senpai.
  • Vitriolic Couple: Considering the abuse she puts him through, and the dread he feels towards her, one might find it hard to believe that they interact every day and that they like each other.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Brought up frequently, so much that it's a problem due to the fact that their relationship status is so murky. When introducing Nagatoro to Sunomiya, Senpai is at a loss for words to define what Nagatoro is to him. Their mutual intention is to become an item, but they're still at the awkward stage in between...
    • Tentatively breached by them deliberately holding hands in public for an extended period of time, in lieu of a more conventional verbal Love Confession.
    • Now averted with Senpai confessing to Nagatoro and asking her out by Chapter 144.

I-if someone sees this(!), it'll cause a misunderstanding!!
—Senpai, Ch. 5

Naoto Hachiouji, most commonly known as "Senpai", is the manga's protagonist and focal character. A twitchy, nerdy, and shy aspiring artist, and Nagatoro's upperclassman(*), he starts to fall in love with her despite her bullying.
  • Accidental Pervert: Many of the situations he gets into with Nagatoro end up like this for him. However, he mostly stumbles not due to pervertedness, but rather, ignorance and inexperience.
  • Adaptational Badass: A heavily downplayed mental example. In the manga, he at least has a fledgling bit of a spine to him, enough to build and grow off of, which allows him to occasionally put his foot down when he personally feels he's had enough, with said strength of will increase over time. This is still a far cry from the original webcomic, where he was so spineless, he effectively got mind-broken into Nagatoro's personal toy from the very first comic.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: His hair was grey-to-black in the Pixiv sets, while in the anime it is grey with somewhat of a brownish hue instead.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Nagatoro refers to him by the honorific "Senpai" in lieu of his real name, and this essentially functions as one.
    • Sakura refers to him as "Senpai-kun", which is a double honorific and thus somewhat more affectionate, if kind of redundant, for using the more cutesy "-kun" over the more formal/generic "-san".
    • His classmates in Chapter 74 refer to him as "Nao-kun".
  • Amazon Chaser: The dude has a thing for strong girls:
    • One of the things he likes the most about Nagatoro is her prowess as a martial artist, and he likes it so much that he's not shy about outright praising her for it.
    • Played with. Though she happens to practice kendo, and this not quite being a factor as to why Senpai used to like her, the Arts Club President counts due to her height and overpowering presence.
  • Animal Motif: Sheep, due to his twitchiness and fluffy hair.
  • Athletically Challenged: He is very good at art, but as his social awkwardness suggests, he isn't good at sports. Nagatoro makes a point to help him get in shape because it's "embarrassing" that his underclassmen are fitter than him.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: The thought of him in a maid outfit and wearing a long wig for a "crossdressing maid cafe" unsettles the girls.
  • Audience Surrogate: Averted. Most works of this type would have the main character be someone the reader could self-insert as, but Senpai is very clearly not. Played straight in the original webcomic, which is written for a masochist audience, and nearly everything is viewed from his perspective.
  • Bad Liar: His obvious embarrassment and blushing usually give away his thoughts whenever he's taunted by Nagatoro and her friends. As a matter of fact, this is one of the main reasons they like to tease him so much. The dude has the worst poker face ever.
  • Broken Tears:
    • In the initial chapters of the manga, Nagatoro bullies him to the point of tears.
    • Nagatoro drives Senpai to tears on almost all the Pixiv illustrations.
  • Butt-Monkey: The exclusive target of Nagatoro's teasing and torment.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Was considering doing this at the end of Chapter 6, but can't bring himself to. Luckily Nagatoro is willing to take charge in that regard, kissing him on the cheek in Chapter 8.
  • Can't Get Away with Nuthin': Albeit Senpai only has eyes for Nagatoro, he is incapable of denying other girls' virtues because he's too sincere for his own good. Even though his intentions may be pure, the more he talks, the more he lands in hot water.
  • Character Development: Has been getting a lot of this already. Initially, he could barely talk to other people, but as he spends more time around Nagatoro he's able to talk more naturally to her. He's also increasingly more daring towards her, and unwittingly, sometimes becomes rather vocal about his attraction to her.
  • Character Tic: He has a habit of pushing his glasses up by the nose (even when not wearing glasses) when someone correctly guesses what he is thinking. Nagatoro calls him out on it. It's such a reflex that he keeps doing it even after he starts wearing contacts, and it becomes so prevalent later that Nagatoro herself unconsciously starts doing it too.
  • Chick Magnet: It's heavily downplayed, but while Nagatoro is the only girl that blatantly shows romantic interest in him, after spending a decent amount of time with Nagatoro's friends, all of them grow to have a strong fondness and liking towards him that they don't show towards any other guy, even if it's unclear whether any of them are actually attracted to him like Nagatoro.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: In spite of liking fanservice-heavy media, Senpai never once attempts to do anything remotely lewd or rude towards either Nagatoro or her friends. This happens to be one of the reasons they enjoy his presence and feel comfortable around him.
  • Covert Pervert: Tries to act like this, but his bumbling nature ultimately averts it. According to 774, he doesn't rebuke Nagatoro unless she goes too far because he's also a closet masochist. We get to see this a bit in Chapter 14, where Nagatoro tricks him into thinking she's going to pierce his ear and then just pinches him. He seems almost disappointed that nothing actually happened.
  • Cuteness Proximity: One of the main reasons he likes Nagatoro. He considers her captivatingly cute, this being one of the factors why he chose her as his muse, as to showcase her cuteness.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Believe it or not, he gets irritated when it looks like Nagatoro is toying with other guys during the art festival in season 1, even though it was clearly an act to promote his own exhibit. Also, when a couple of guys were leering at her during a hot (and sweaty) day, he moves to block their view of Nagatoro and smirks victoriously.
  • Crush Blush: He gets red as a cherry in almost every interaction with Nagatoro. It's evident that he really likes her, and at times, he's actively holding himself back.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: He still pushes up the bridge of his glasses long after he stops wearing them.
  • Did I Just Say That Out Loud?: A tendency with him. Some of the series' most heartfelt moments come from absentminded declarations made by Senpai towards Nagatoro, as he declares his sincere feelings at those given moments, only to pause and realize what he just said.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Oh, in droves! This is one of the main reasons he doesn't kick Nagatoro out of the room; Nagatoro is a head-turner, using her many assets to tease Senpai and distract him from his art. He tries his best not to look, but what's there to look at is so enticing. Nagatoro happens to be, physically, one of the most beautiful people he's ever met, and on top of that is the fact that she's a person who, looking like she does, gives him the time of day. That'd make it hard for anyone not to look.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference:
    • Senpai doesn't wear glasses and lacks beady eyes in the original Pixiv illustrations, looking less of a stereotypical nerd and simply looking frail. A later chapter of the webcomic was later published in the manga as a special chapter, still showing Senpai without his glasses.
    • As shown in the official anthology, Nanashi had considered making Senpai gaunter for the manga, but his editor convinced him to make Senpai cuter and somewhat closer to his original design in the Pixiv illustrations, only now wearing glasses.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: He's even more of a doormat in the original webcomics, allowing Nagatoro to walk all over him both verbally and physically without so much as a snark, him initially refusing to let Nagatoro hold his hand after a rather nasty prank being the only exception. Senpai in the manga and anime is at least more willing to put his foot down, especially after spending more time with Nagatoro.
  • Eating the Eye Candy:
    • Played with. Albeit he's prone to having girls show more than intended, he tries to avoid it as much as he can and tries to make them cover themselves (including Nagatoro). He's not made of iron, but it's not like he's actively looking for it.
    • Nagatoro is aware that this happens to him rather frequently due to the girls that surround him (delinquent/gyarus, exhibitionist ojous), so this is one of the reasons she doesn't leave him alone.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: In the very first image set, Nagatoro tells him that the girls call him the "beansprout prince" behind his back since he's tall and skinny. It's a pun on his family name Hachiouji, meaning "eight princes".note
  • Emotionally Tongue-Tied: One of the aspects of Senpai that Nagatoro most prods upon. She makes it clear that if Senpai truly wants something, he has to say it loud and clear, as he's given to pussyfoot on his intentions and desires, especially when it comes to spending time with her.
  • Endearingly Dorky: One of the reasons Nagatoro and her clique pester him and enjoy being around him, as he's a talented young artist and a twitchy, jumpy geek.
  • Extreme Doormat: He is the stomping pet of Nagatoro and her friends, though this has gotten better with time.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": "Senpai" is technically just an honorific.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Even with his kinks and his desire to do so, Senpai would never do anything remotely inappropriate to Nagatoro in equal parts due to him being a gentleman, and also because he's too embarrassed to do it.
    • He usually doesn't respond to Gamo-chan's taunts in spite of being visibly unnerved by them due to the same reason, and also because he is somewhat aware that the taunts directed at him are meant to rouse Nagatoro.
    • It's shown that he doesn't appreciate when Nagatoro offends him during the Boke and Tsukkomi Routine, and later when she equates him to Sakura's stalker.
    • It's implied that it's not only that Nagatoro and her friends barge into the Arts Club room and do whatever they want, but also, that he's actively letting them in because he enjoys their presence. He did start out of a Friendless Background, so for him, they're welcome.
    • He can handle people criticizing his art, but as shown in Chapter 52, he certainly won't abide to anyone making fun of Nagatoro's art.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: He went to middle school with his new clubmate Sunomiya, who is two years his junior. It's thus implied that he may have also been the President's underclassman during their middle school years too.
  • First Love: He is implied to be Nagatoro's, and he becomes somewhat aware of this.
  • First-Name Basis:
    • Invoked and subverted. In Chapter 63, he is willing to call Nagatoro by her first name, but ultimately resorts not to.
    • When attempting to give his own name to Nagatoro, she dismisses it and insists on calling him "Senpai".
    • His male classmates as this by default through nicknaming him "Nao-kun".
  • First-Person Perspective:
    • Played with. He is the only character in the manga whose inner thoughts are fully displayed for the reader while getting only snippets of Nagatoro and her friends' thoughts. The manga focuses on Senpai's reactions to Nagatoro's actions, both inside and outside. However, since he's not an Audience Surrogate, it's more of a third-person perspective.
    • Most of the Pixiv sets consist of him having a conversation with Nagatoro, directly facing her.
  • Geek Physiques: Senpai is one of the lanky types, completely lacking in physical fitness. Guy's built like a twig, so Nagatoro often decries this on him (herself being markedly physical and fit) and it's one of the aspects of him that she tries to correct the most for his own sake, as he's too sedentary for his own good.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: Starting from Chapter 73, Senpai started wearing contacts.
  • Given Name Reveal: A subtle one in chapter 102, his full name is revealed after Nagatoro receives a text from him with his full name as the sender.
  • Grew a Spine: A large part of his personal character arc, and something Nagatoro is deliberately pushing him into doing, is developing a backbone and standing up for himself. It's a very long and bumpy process, and he often slips backward before pushing onward again, but he's gradually getting there.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation:
    • Admits he would like to be praised, but says he could never get complimented because he has no talents. While he says this, the panel focuses on a drawing he did, which the audience is shown multiple times he's pretty good at. Constant bullying would certainly explain his low self-esteem.
    • The fact that his name isn't even alluded to until Chapter 74 in spite of the story being told from his first-person perspective is telling of how little importance he gives to himself.
    • Senpai is more social than he thinks himself to be. He has a couple of close male friends in class and a friendly/cordial relationship with the Arts Club President, her cousin Sunomiya, and lastly, Nagatoro's own friends. Albeit he doesn't think twice about this, Nagatoro becomes increasingly aware that he's not really in the social bubble he thinks he's in, and that there are more variables in his life than she initially thought.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • He is a fundamentally sweet and kind young man in spite of his bitterness, anti-sociability, and self-deprecation. This is one of the reasons Nagatoro starts liking him and starts treating him with more dignity as time goes by, as he's willing to dispense kindness towards her in spite of all the crap she's done to him.
    • Deep inside, he is more than appreciative at the fact that Nagatoro is so insistent in keeping him company, and he has started to see her as a person for whom his antisocial logic doesn't apply, thus becoming even more grateful for her presence for proving him wrong about his negativity.
    • Nagatoro's friends take a liking to him because, among other things, he is not a superfluous person like most of their boy classmates, so he doesn't have the heart to be duplicitous.
    • As Nagatoro and company find out, Senpai happens to be a heavenly cook.
    • Contrary to Nagatoro's perception of him as having a wandering eye when it comes to other girls, it's shown that to him, Nagatoro is second to none. The dude's not made of stone, but it's Nagatoro who he wants to be with.
    • Senpai is surprisingly bold whenever he gets emotional, and some of the manga's most poignant moments come from unintended but profoundly sincere utterances by Senpai.
  • His Own Worst Enemy: One of the things Nagatoro prods him about the most is the fact that he tends to give up on things before even trying. So it's not only Senpai being so negative that irritates Nagatoro, but rather that he thinks that he shouldn't correct himself for being wrong.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved:
    • It's implied to be one of the main reasons he tolerates Nagatoro. Albeit he's been ignored and bullied before, it was never done to him by a person he's utterly unable to ignore. She's too appealing to his tastes and too insistent in keeping him company.
    • Eventually, Nagatoro slowly starts realizing that his intentions towards her are purer than what she gives him credit for.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends:
    • He starts out as a loner with a bullied background to the point that he stopped registering most people's faces. Slowly, but surely, Nagatoro, Gamo-chan, Yoshi, and Sakura get into his space, and he increasingly pays less and less mind to their presence there because he recognizes that they enjoy his company. It was a weird approach, but the girls are the friends he unconsciously sorely craved for.
    • Qualified as the story goes on however: he did know a few other people before he got to know Nagatoro and her pals, but his social circle is still extremely limited. He has seniors in the art club, most notably the President, but they've mostly parted ways from him due to impending college with only the President dropping by occasionally. He is close enough to at least one guy in his class to ask him to be his model, but since he's the only member of the art club his age, Nagatoro and the girls are the closest thing he has to regular peers for most of the time we see him. Later he is shown with two guy classmates during a school trip but they all seem to be in the same boat, to the point of them chiding him when he resolves to get closer to Nagatoro, who they contrast with themselves as one of the "cool kids".
  • Informed Attractiveness: Apparently this is one of his assets, though he's none the wiser about it. Under his unkempt, nerdy appearance, he's certainly attractive enough physically to warrant protectiveness by Nagatoro, especially from her friends. However, his character design doesn't show him to be more handsome than average.
  • Insult of Endearment: Gamo-chan and Yoshi refer to him as "Paisen", which is the opposite of "Senpai", but without the reverence of the honorific.
  • I Read It for the Articles: He likes to read Manga with a lot of fanservice, but when found out he claims he uses it as reference material for his art.
  • Last-Name Basis: In contrast to him vs. Nagatoro and her friends, he and the Sunomiya cousins know each other's family names, but this is not revealed for a long while. His kouhai Sunomiya is the first character to use his family name, and her cousin the President does it too shortly after. In turn, he calls his kouhai by name but seems to stick to "President" out of respect. Nagatoro uses his family name for the first time only because the younger Sunomiya just did (showing no sign of surprise, probably indicating she's known for a while). But in the original image set, it's Nagatoro who reveals his name to the reader.
  • Last of His Kind: Played with. In Chapter 37, it's implied that Senpai is the last remaining member of the Art Club due to the fact that when his upperclassmen began their third year, they had to focus on university exams and had to retire from the club. However, it's eventually shown that the Club President still manages the affairs of the club, and later an underclassman in the form of Hana Sunomiya joins the club.
  • Location Theme Naming: His surname is taken from Hachiōji Station in Tokyo, which follows the railway station theme naming of characters.
  • Love Epiphany: In Chapter 107, he has a dream about the future after he graduates. He meets up with Nagatoro two years later and they have grown distant, where it is suggested she is in a relationship with another guy. He realizes he doesn't want that to happen because he is in love with Nagatoro.
  • Male Gaze: He can't help admiring Nagatoro's occasional Fanservice... or that of her equally attractive friends.
  • Morality Pet: He acts as one for Nagatoro and her group. Towards everybody else, they're complete Alpha Bitches that treat all other girls and boys with either disdain or indifference, but with Senpai, they act like Lovable Alpha Bitches, still being somewhat demeaning to him but also expressing occasional kindness and companionship.
  • Nerds Are Pervs: The popular, athletic Nagatoro clearly has this trope in mind when she constantly harps on her shy, geeky Senpai for his love of fanservice manga and his painting skills, on top of offering to model nude for one of his pieces. Outside of his love of fanservice-heavy manga, Senpai himself is no more perverted than any other boy his age, but the author confirmed that the reason he doesn't push Nagatoro away is that he is a closet masochist.
  • Nerds Are Sexy: This is one of the main reasons Nagatoro and her friends mess with him so much; he is a rather handsome young man in spite of his lack of grooming. Also, unlike most of the boys that approach Nagatoro, he is unpretentious and intellectual, if markedly wimpy and twitchy. He's just a better person than he thinks he is.
  • Nerd Glasses: Wears a pair of horn rims. In the earlier webcomics he was The Faceless (as he provided the reader's P.O.V. Cam) or his eyes were hidden. In Chapter 73, he started wearing contacts
  • Nervous Tics: When he's flustered, he'll often push up his glasses by the bridge. He does this even after he starts wearing contacts.
  • Nice Guy:
    • One of the main reasons Nagatoro likes him so much. Though he's a twitchy ball of nerves whenever he's with Nagatoro, Senpai has never made a secret of how much he sincerely admires her and finds praises for her that she never quite expects or even sees in herself.
    • This is also why he also befriends Nagatoro's friends as well, as even though he doesn't stand up to them, they don't feel like he really should bother.
  • No Name Given: Initially only known as "Senpai." He was going to give his name to Nagatoro, but she stopped him before he could. The earliest Pixiv illustrations named him Hachiouji, and a game 774 made gave his given name as Naoto. Chapter 74 starts veering towards this being the case, as his classmates refer to him as "Nao-kun". Chapter 82 finally reveals that his family name is indeed Hachiouji.
  • Not So Stoic:
    • As shown in Chapter 27, it's made apparent that Senpai doesn't like the notion of Nagatoro being close to other boys.
    • In Chapter 34, it's shown that he didn't appreciate the fact that Nagatoro compared him to the boy that was stalking Sakura, this being the motivation behind his acceptance to go on a pretend date with the girl in order to spite Nagatoro.
  • Odd Friendship: With Nagatoro and her friends. They are a popular, attractive clique, and he's a dorky, nerdy loner.
  • One Head Taller: He's taller than Nagatoro, who is also the shortest in her girl group.
  • Only-Child Syndrome: Senpai is the only child in his family, which may have been a factor that contributed to his isolation.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He was going to give his name, but Nagatoro stopped him so she could keep calling him Senpai.
    • In Chapter 74, his classmates call him "Nao-kun" which is almost certainly a nickname for "Naoto" in line with pre-serialization content.
  • Only Sane Man: He's the lightning rod for Nagatoro and her friends, as he's the person who questions their actions and attitudes towards their classmates. One of the interesting things about this is that even when he's wimpy and not proactive, he never cedes terrain to them and calls them out when they get too unreasonable. He is a more stalwart person than they care to notice.
  • Otaku: A fan of fanservice-heavy anime and manga, and is even drawing a manga of his own.
  • Pyrrhic Victory:
    • Senpai endeared himself to one of the most coveted groups of first-year girls at school by virtue of being liked by one of them. The problem is, they like to tease him and regularly invade his club room, depriving him of silence and comfort.
    • Senpai has sometimes shown off to Nagatoro's friends for her sake and at the cost of some of his dignity.
  • Safety in Indifference: This seems to be his philosophy, one which Nagatoro challenges.
Senpai: For sure. I've been bullied for a long while now, so I know the way to deal with it: Avoid their gaze, close my heart, and let it pass. So I can't even remember the faces of those people I hated at all.
  • Scary Shiny Glasses: Senpai's glasses glow ominously when he calls Nagatoro's bluff and asks her exactly what "perverted things" she thinks he would do.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: When Gamo-chan and Sakura tease him about dating Nagatoro, or the Arts Club President being his ex, he denies it.
  • Shrinking Violet: At the start of the series, he's barely able to speak up when girls are around. He gets better.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: In spite of how noticeably buxomer Nagatoro's friends are, Senpai is considerably more attracted to Nagatoro than to them, and would much rather be with her only.
  • Spell My Name With An S: His family name "Hachiouji" can also be spelled "Hachioji" or "Hachiōji".
  • Stating the Simple Solution:
    • Nagatoro has told him more than once that he likes to run away from his weaknesses.
    • She has also told him that he's more than free to tell her to stop if he feels that she's gone too far; this is particularly poignant, as it shows just how much Senpai can endure from Nagatoro.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: He resembles his mom greatly.
  • Stubborn Mule: It's shown that he'd barely bother to do anything out of his own volition, and will come up with any excuse he can to not even give it a try. This is one of the main reasons Nagatoro prods him as much as she does.
  • Supreme Chef: After Nagatoro insults his skill at making a bento lunch, the next day he creates a meal so incredible it makes those who eat it feel like they're losing their clothes.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: Self-admittedly, to his own embarrassment. Senpai tends to cringe at his own romantic fantasies, which are, albeit sometimes playful and coy, can also be quite tender and heartfelt. For Nagatoro, one of the most surprising things about him is that Senpai is more of a gentleman than she gives him credit for, that he's not really thinking about pervy stuff involving her, and that his feelings for her are more innocent than she wants to think.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Downplayed. When he's put up against the more muscular Sasai in a Judo match, he starts off getting flailed around easily, only lasting because Sasai opted to simply fling him around instead of bothering with proper technique, only scoring half-points instead of full-points as a result. Naoto, thanks to Nagatoro's brief training and some encouragement, is able to get him into more proper pins and nearly beat him. While he does still lose, he ultimately gets his opponent's respect.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Nagatoro gets livid at him at the beach, when he tells her not to rub oil on his back because other people might think that they're a couple. As by doing so, he is regressing into his self-deprecation, Nagatoro starts rubbing the oil on him with her feet. If he's not going to act like a dignified person, she won't either.
  • What You Are in the Dark:
    • He constantly considers scenarios where he's bolder towards Nagatoro, often resorting to otherwise playing it safe. However, ironically enough, the less he thinks about the situation, the bolder he is in his declarations toward her.
    • Elaborating on said utterances, it's revealed by those that in spite of the more saucy circumstances they otherwise find themselves in, Senpai mostly wants to approach Nagatoro tenderly with romantic intentions. This increasingly shows Nagatoro that he may not be in it for the kinks and that he cherishes her.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: One of the hidden ethos of the series. One of Nagatoro's goals, apart from making fun of him, is to make him realize that his self-deprecation is unwarranted, and as long as he doesn't respect himself, she doesn't have to respect him either. As such, if she feels that he's somehow regressing, she'll regress to the bullying too.
    • This works so well that Senpai starts doing the same to Nagatoro when she feels self-deprecated herself.
  • You Keep Telling Yourself That:
    • During their "date" Sakura asks him if he has a girl he'd much rather be with on the date, and he vehemently denies it. His blush tells her otherwise, though.
    • He doesn't think his art is particularly good, even though he's a fundamentally excellent artist. This happens to be one of the things Nagatoro likes the most about him.
    • Played with. Nagatoro and her friends tease him when he shows them the Club President's painting of herself in the nude, arguing that he likes the painting for more than its artistic value, as he's trying to convince them otherwise. The dude's not fooling anyone.

Nagatoro's Friends

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled_898.png
Yoshi, Gamo-chan and Sakura

We really do live in different worlds... it's like... jaguars barging into a mole's burrow on a whim!!
—Senpai, in reference to Nagatoro and her friends, Ch. 27

A trio of social school girls whom Nagatoro hangs out with, later revealed to be her classmates. They are considered quite beautiful and very popular, frequently rejecting boys trying to win their affection. They are collectively just as intimidating as Nagatoro is, exhibiting largely dominating personalities and making Senpai a target of their whims for their own amusement, though in time, their mutual relationship becomes more amicable.
    In General

  • Alpha Bitch: They are, together with Nagatoro, markedly attractive and maliciously scheming.
  • Art Evolution: In the early chapters, all three girls were decked out in jewelry and other accessories. Sakura also had long hair early on. When they're properly introduced to Senpai, however, much of that jewelry is gone and Sakura's hair is shorter.
  • Big-Breast Pride: They mention how Nagatoro "lacks the power," compared to themselves and the Arts Club President.
Gamo, Sakura, and Yoshi: Might makes right!!
  • Book Dumb: By their midterms, the three of them are at risk of failing their grade.
  • Canon Foreigner: Technically. It's by the same author, but they didn't appear in the original Pixiv image sets.
  • Character Development: Gamo-chan and Yoshi have so far spent the most time with Senpai. As such, the pair begin to show a less harsh attitude towards him, even allowing him to become a fourth person in their outings (though they still consider him a pathetic weakling to tease when Nagatoro isn't around). At one point they even intentionally ditch a group of popular guys in order to hang out with Senpai for no particular reason.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Like Nagatoro, they also sport these when being playfully catty around Senpai (and each other). Lampshaded when Nagatoro proposes they open a cat-girl maid cafe for the school festival.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness:
    • In the first chapter, Nagatoro had three friends, including a tanned girl with two hair clips. This girl (Sakura) briefly appears in Chapter 2 then disappears for the next 24 chapters, but re-appears in Chapter 27 without any explanation for her absence beyond Senpai internally acknowledging there are now four girls, he himself seemingly having forgotten that there were four girls on the day he first met Nagatoro.
    • They also wore jewelry in their first appearance (a mark of juvenile delinquency in Japan), but this was toned down.
    • In the first chapter, a fifth girl named Yuuko is mentioned, but not present. The next chapter shows Nagatoro, Sakura, and a girl with parted bangs who could be her. But Yuuko and this girl have yet to be shown or mentioned again.
  • Evil Is Petty: When they come across a group of loud boys in the cafeteria, they exhaust their civilized resources to make them quiet, so they go for the jugular instead. They opt to send Sakura to sweet-talk and tease each individual in the group in front of the others so that they begin fighting amongst themselves for her, which will eventually ruin their friendship and break up the group. All for the sake of quietness.
  • The Gadfly: They pick on Senpai whenever they manage to corner him alone, but flee when Nagatoro shows up. They also enjoy teasing Nagatoro by making her flustered or jealous.
  • Girl Posse: To some degree, they are a Japanese version of this trope, being a seemingly unpleasant entourage of girls following a leader that enjoys antagonizing. Later subverted when it's shown they are not as bad as they look.
  • Give Geeks a Chance: While Nagatoro is the only one interested romantically, all the girls welcomed Senpai with rather open arms, at least during their second meeting.
  • Gyaru Girl: Downplayed. Their bearing may give off this vibe, overlapping with Japanese Delinquents, though Sakura looks most like the stereotypical, most common depiction of a gyaru as a tanned and likely dyed blonde. It is unclear if the girls do in fact have dyed hair since Nagatoro is the only character so far to have black hair. They all do appear to have a less than "model student" reputation in school and wear shorter skirts (or wear them higher up) than usual, but other hallmarks like loose socks are absent (although Sakura keeps hers rolled down in what might be considered a stand-in for this). Their first appearance had them wearing jewelry which was another hallmark, but this was toned down later.
  • Hidden Depths: As Senpai slowly finds out, they are actually better and kinder girls than how they usually behave, though they seem to dispense said kindness only to people they like.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When a group that's being "loud and annoying" shows up in the cafeteria, where they usually hang out, they escape to Senpai's club room. And proceed to be "loud and annoying".
  • Japanese Delinquents: All of them carry small bits of the archetype, such as Nagatoro sporting ear jewelry and no socks, or Sakura being tanned and with her own socks rolled down, although it's more when in a pack that they give off an intimidating "too cool for school" vibe (for Senpai anyway). Later, according to the Arts Club President, the student council described them as a bunch of "good-for-nothings". They also have low grades except for Nagatoro.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Towards Senpai, though this only applies to him because he endears himself to them. To the rest of their classmates, they are just Alpha Bitches.
  • Loving Bully: Initially, their bullying is more malicious, but in time they themselves start taking a liking to Senpai, not only due to his quirks but also because they know that Nagatoro likes him. They also find him to be very respectful and non-threatening towards them, finding comfort with his company and ultimately considering him a friend to them.
  • Menace Decay: As with Nagatoro herself, the torment they put Senpai through eases considerably once they, Nagatoro, and Senpai start hanging out together on more occasions.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Like Senpai, their formal full names have yet to be revealed in the manga, although they are occasionally referred to by nicknames, e.g. Nagatoro is "Hayacchi," the blonde is "Yoshi," and the long-haired one is "Gamo-chan".
    • Senpai usually refers to the trio simply as the "friends" - using the English word. In the fan book bonus chapters, he was shown to recall their usual nicknames, however.
  • Shipper on Deck: They pick on Senpai the same way Nagatoro does, but it's made clear that they're doing it to prod Nagatoro because they can tell she likes Senpai and that their interference makes her jealous.
  • So Proud of You: They're happy about the fact that their Hayacchi has found a boy she likes, but that doesn't prevent them from having fun at her (and his) expense while at it.
  • The Tease:
    • Yoshi outright flirts with Senpai and offers to be his girlfriend instead, shocking Nagatoro. She also tries to stroke his fluffy hair but is foiled.
    • Gamo-chan outright forces Senpai to grope her chest, pushing it up seductively while the other friend holds him in place.
    • Sakura usually appeals to his kindness and lures him with niceties and praises. It's later shown that she uses those as a weapon in other circumstances, but in Senpai's case, she is being friendly.
  • Those Two Guys: Yoshi and Gamo-chan are rarely seen apart from each other, whether Nagatoro and/or Sakura's with them or not.
    • In one storyline, it appears that they're in the same first-year class (section B) while Nagatoro and Sakura are in another (C) as they meet and greet each other in the hallway outside the rooms. But later, the supplemental Official Fanbook states that all four of them are in class C. And still, later, Gamo-chan faces someone from class B in a tournament with neither giving any sign that they're classmates.
    • In the Official Fanbook, a map of the town where the manga takes place shows that Yoshi and Gamo-chan are actually neighbors since their houses are shown next to each other, with a short street (or driveway) between them.
  • The Vamp: None of them is above using their bodies to try to tempt Senpai into "cheating" on Nagatoro, as well as other uses.
  • What Does She See in Him?: They realize Nagatoro has a serious interest in Senpai. What they can't understand is why she gives him so much attention, or what makes him worth her time. So they tease him the same manner she does, to figure out what makes him so appealing. Nagatoro's hidden fear is if they start to like him or he reciprocates their advances.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: They seem to think that they're part of a Mean Girls-esque posse where they as a group gang up on one target for bullying. Unfortunately for everyone else in the equation, they don't seem to notice (or care) that Nagatoro's picking on Senpai for a different reason and would rather they butt out. Of course, this could also be the intention in some instances: paying attention to Senpai to make sure she gets jealous and protective.

We've said so much, but... isn't he (Senpai) more like an insect than a slave? (...) But ya kno'... seems like he isn't even a man.
—Gamo-chan to Nagatoro, Ch. 11

Maki Gamou, or "Gamo-chan" to her friends, is the nominal ringleader of Nagatoro's clique. She's just as aggressive in teasing Senpai as Nagatoro is, much to the latter's frustration, but doesn't have romantic tendencies for him. Her family runs a fighting gym, of which Nagatoro is a member.
  • Action Girl: She's initially shown to be quite fit, and it's later revealed that her family runs a fighting gym. However, compared to Nagatoro, who is constantly showing off her martial skills and has a judo background that becomes a plot point, Gamo-chan's not shown fighting nearly as much.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Short of having her full name revealed, "Gamo-chan" constitutes this. It's later shown that her family name is Gamou.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules: During the Kyoto field trip, she reveals that she would like to be with a guy who's stronger than she is. Sakura immediately brings up Taiga Nagatoro, who has sparred with her before at her family's gym.
  • Alone Among the Couples: She, Yoshi, and Nekoba when it comes to Sakura and Rabi-chan's showing off their boyfriends (and by extension all other students in school doing the same) during Christmas Eve. She leads the "boyfriend-less group" to spend the night in a karaoke bar to spite the "with-boyfriends group". Sometime later, she smacks Nekoba with a pillow when the latter says she got herself a boyfriend too.
  • Always Someone Better: Dialogue and scenes in the Gamou Fighting Gym imply Nagatoro struggles against Gamo-chan when sparring in MMA rules due to the significant gap in size and range, which makes it easy for Gamo-chan to outstrike her. However, once they clinch up, Nagatoro is able to throw her down thanks to her judo acumen.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Shown with toned abs and musculature when in a bikini. She's also athletic enough to attempt racing Nagatoro in a swimming contest.
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: Arrogant MMA girl in this case. She can be very smug and loves a good fight, especially against Nagatoro.
  • Blind Without Them: Played with and implied. The fourth official comic anthology features a comic where she encounters Senpai outside school, and has to squint to recognize him, implying that she scowls because she has bad eyesight.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Frequently makes this expression.
  • Cleans Up Nicely: She and Sakura are very stylish unlike Nagatoro (who doesn't care about that stuff) and Yoshi (who doesn't groom).
  • Combat Pragmatist: She has no qualms with knocking Nagatoro down when the latter's distracted (at the sight of Senpai) during their MMA sparring, telling her that it's her own fault for letting herself get distracted, although she does seem a bit momentarily worried that Nagatoro might have eaten a punch too hard. Later, she knows she's absurdly outmatched during a school judo tournament, so she pretends to forfeit so she can catch her opponent off guard and then charges in screaming with a hail Mary throw, although to no avail.
  • Cool Big Sis: Figuratively to her circle of friends and classmates, and literally in her family, as she's the oldest child of 3.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: She seems to be at least a match for Nagatoro in mixed martial arts, but while Nagatoro trains in both judo and MMA, Gamo-chan only trains the latter. Transference of skills between both arts is difficult, as judo has a much more restrictive ruleset (especially after the 2010 rule changes) and features a huge game changer in the form of the judogi, so when Gamo-chan is forced to compete in a judo tournament, she ends up doing little better than a martial arts newbie. It doesn't help that she has the bad luck of receiving one of the toughest opponents around, either. Later she joins the girls' judo club together with Nagatoro and she's the only named character there who is a white belt.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has fiery orange hair and eyes.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Chapter 136, "Go for it, Gamo!!", is focused on her and features an atypical flashback that reveals her inner thoughts.
  • Dominatrix: Has this vibe all over her. She's the most sadistic of the girls by a wide margin, and Senpai's dreams outright picture her with black spandex and a whip. To go further into the theme, her bikini in the Beach Episode is solid black, giving her a S&M vibe in contrast to her friends' girlier swimsuits.
  • Fascinating Eyebrow: To go with her smug sneer which she often sports. More often it's a fascinating eyelid which is higher than the other.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has orange hair and quite a personality.
  • The Gadfly: She's one to Nagatoro. After realizing Nagatoro has feelings for Senpai (and vice versa), she pulls unique pranks to help their relationship.
  • Heir to the Dojo: As shown in Chapter 76, her family runs a Mixed Martial Arts and fitness gym bearing their name, the "Gamou Fighting Gym".
  • Hidden Depths:
    • She is certainly more perceptive and sensible than her uninterested, even detached look might suggest. For instance, her expression implied she realized what were the underlying dynamics between Nagatoro and Senpai in the very first instance she saw their antics together, which is the reason for all her own teasing, while Yoshi comparatively only seems to act that way to play along or because she finds it fun to tease him.
    • She turns out to have a very nice singing voice (which is revealed in a brief scene where she goes karaoke with her friends), courtesy of her voice actress Mikako Komatsu.
    • Though acting disinterested, she is shown to have always have had a vested interest in Nagatoro's pursuit of martial arts, since it's the reason they met and became best friends to begin with, and was secretly disappointed when Nagatoro threw the towel when she lost to Orihara back in middle school. She is later delighted when Nagatoro not only retakes judo, but also expresses sincere enthusiasm and encouraging words to support Gamo, something Nagatoro had never done before.
  • Hidden Purpose Test: Most of her interactions with Senpai serve to gauge Nagatoro's reaction, and she's not shy in overstepping the boundaries or being rude to Senpai to rouse Nagatoro.
  • Insistent Terminology: Of the three friends, she's the only one who always gets the honorific "-chan" attached to her name or nickname (the feminine equivalent of "-kun") for some reason. It's always like that in the cast list.
  • Insult of Endearment: Calls Senpai "Paisen". Reversing the syllables is considered to be rude and sarcastic, although in this case, it has a tone of closeness.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Played with. In her clique, she's the one who looks and behaves the most like a delinquent. However, it's shown to be more of an aesthetic choice for her, as otherwise, she seems to be a law-abiding student.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's the strongest bully of the other three girls and in a profile, it's stated that she likes to mock people. She tends to be the most vicious critic of Senpai, questioning his sexual drive and manliness on several occasions, and gets in Nagatoro's face if she protests. However, it's insinuated to be at least partially an act, as doing so causes Nagatoro to go the extra mile in proving he's a worthy guy and ultimately bringing the pair closer together. She only insults Senpai in this manner when Nagatoro can hear it, never when he's alone and she can't defend him.
  • The Leader:
    • Though Nagatoro is the main heroine, she appears to be the leader of their clique. The others follow her lead when ganging up on Senpai when Nagatoro won't "share" teasing with them.
    • She generally backs down in most situations but is not afraid to fight Nagatoro when they really disagree. It often throws Yoshi into confusion because she's equally close to both of them.
  • Location Theme Naming: Her surname is taken from Gamō Station in Saitama Prefecture, which follows the railway station theme naming of characters.
  • The Reliable One: The fourth official comic anthology states that she personally organized the whole "Torocat" skit and that among her friends and classmates, she is seen as a Cool Big Sis.
  • Replacement Flat Character: Before character development set in, she came across as one to the Nagatoro of the original image sets, who was more overtly cruel with her insults. Hammering it home, Nagatoro tells her that she's going too far.
  • Shipper on Deck: She's the most overt "wingman" among the three friends, albeit always in a teasing way, up to needling Nagatoro about it on her own after the two of them join the judo club in their second year.
    • Played with, after Senpai secures his first real date with Nagatoro, which she and Yoshi find out about without the others knowing.
      • After Nagatoro declines to visit him the day before the date and looks particularly smug, scheming, and cat-like, Gamo-chan thinks she's eyeing Senpai like a dessert to be savored last and somehow concludes his virginity is in peril (Nagatoro's previous behavior when alone with Senpai may make this doubtful, but then again Gamo-chan wouldn't know that). She and Yoshi go to warn him, but he's away and they only encounter the President's cousin who views them as suspicious delinquents intending to sabotage the date. In her hearing, possibly not even bothering to hide it (as they yet have no idea she's a fellow shipper and not a romantic rival), Gamo-chan then tells Yoshi that they'll have to watch over the date themselves. The President's cousin takes this to mean that the delinquents want to get in the way of his romance outright (which is assuming too much). In the end, Senpai and Nagatoro get two sets of stalkers on their first date, with the President joining her cousin.
      • As she and Yoshi stalk the pair, Gamo-chan alludes to the prematurely-activated Giant God Warrior from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (made even clearer in the visuals), saying that Senpai should let his virginity sleep for a while longer, rather than he should awaken, shoot once then melt away. Which means she's just still looking out for the two in her own mischievous way. She plans to snap embarrassing pictures of them, but Yoshi ultimately stops her from running up to them since going any further would ruin their date, and she agrees. (Then the Sunomiyas chase them, despite their protests, right up to where Nagatoro and Senpai are, making them all Moment Killers anyway. But they're Easily Forgiven the next day.)
    • She proves to be this beyond doubt in chapter 123 of the manga when she challenges Nagatoros brother Taiga to spar with her just to keep him and Misaki away from the mixed onsen Nagatoro and Senpai are currently at. She's willing to suffer multiple throws by the more skilled Taiga just to buy the pair more time.
  • Show Some Leg: She's the most sexually confident of the girls, being braver in compromising situations than Sakura, and doesn't get embarrassed from showing Senpai her body up close and personal. She even has hints of exhibitionist tendencies when teasing him.
  • Situational Sociability: Gamo-chan only picks on Senpai or emasculates him whenever Nagatoro is within earshot or when he's not being proactive. She does this not actually aiming at him, but rather, to prod Nagatoro by proxy when she gets offended for him.
  • Smile of Approval: She smiles happily whenever Senpai shows a little backbone or Nagatoro does something that brings them a little closer together.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: It's shown in Chapter 104 that she has a crush on Nagatoro's brother, as he's an eager and caring sparring partner for her at her family's gym. She denies it and says they're Just Friends, but she's uncharacteristically and obviously blushing and shaken, clearly taken off guard when Sakura reveals this to the other girls (they're having a love talk at the time) so that all the others Squee in shock and delight. Nagatoro still ribs her a little about her wanting to become a sister-in-law.
  • Smug Smiler: Often sports a sneering toothy grin.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Her family name is romanized as "Gamou" by the author himself, instead of alternatives like "Gamō" or indeed "Gamo". The last option wasn't taken probably because as spelled in Japanese script, it's clear that the "Gamo" in "Gamo-chan" is pronounced slightly differently from her family name.
  • Tomboy: Played with. Although she's tall, shapely, and has good looks, she's not very girly or delicate and usually wears her hair quite messy. However, in spite of this appearance and attitude, she's not shown doing stuff that would be considered "tomboyish" other than combat sports. In comparison, she's less of a tomboy than Nagatoro herself, while looking more like one.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Unlike her friends, she has shaggy, unkempt hair. Her beauty comes from her height and athletic figure.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: From what it's shown of her MMA sparrings, Gamo-chan seems to be a sprawl-and-brawl type of fighter, favoring pure striking and capitalizing on her naturally long arms and legs to outrange her opponent. However, given that her usual opponent is Nagatoro, a judo champion, it's possible that Gamo-chan sticks to that strategy simply because she knows Nagatoro will always out-grapple her at short range.
  • The Worf Effect:
    • While she's no slouch at martial arts, often sparring with Nagatoro at her own family's gym and appearing to be Nagatoro's near-equal in MMA, she doesn't train judo, and at the school judo tournament she has also the misfortune to have her first match be against an Olympic team candidate who effortlessly eliminates her... and who is up against Nagatoro next.
    • She is later also defeated by Fujimin who turns out to be stronger than she looks with a sword.
  • Younger Than They Look: She easily looks like she could be in the same year as Senpai, if not a year older, but is in the same year as Nagatoro.
  • Your Size May Vary: She's consistently drawn as the tallest of her gang, but her exact height varies a bit between scenes. She is generally around Senpai's height, but depending on the shot, she can be either a bit shorter or a bit taller than him.

Anime
Manga
Voiced by: Aina Suzuki (Japanese), Lily Ki (English), Cassandra Valtier (Latin American Spanish)

Senpai, how far have you gone with Hayacchi? (...) How cute~ (...) Hey, Senpai, do you want to go out with me too?
—Yoshi, Ch. 11

Somewhat of a sidekick within Nagatoro's clique, "Yoshi" frequently copies or repeats what her friends say and do. Initially in the manga, she tries to be social and be The Matchmaker for her friends, with mixed results. Once Sakura is further introduced and takes over the matchmaker role, Yoshi becomes a shier and skittish girl.
  • Adapted Out: In the anime adaptation of Chapter 6, Yoshi was replaced with Sakura, who is a more outgoing and boys-seeking girl than Yoshi, and thus a more fitting character for that chapter. In the manga, Sakura had not received significant characterization at that point, and Yoshi had not been presented as shy.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Played with. It's not known if "Yoshi" is short for her name or her last name, or whether is short for anything to begin with.
  • All There in the Manual: Among other details, the official fan book reveals that she lives right next door to Gamo-chan, which likely means they're Childhood Friends.
  • Animal Lover: The fourth official comic anthology shows that she's very dedicated to her dog, and has several items of clothes that feature an image of it.
  • Animal Motifs: Played for laughs. In one of the extra chapters, it's shown that her miniature dachshund looks exactly like her. She's the human equivalent of a yappy lapdog.
  • Art Evolution:
    • She had a more modest bust in her first few appearances.
    • In a sort of Running Gag, the longer the manga runs, the longer Yoshi's ahoge grows.
  • Brutal Honesty: When the group is stunned by Nagatoro's joke about milt (fish sperm) getting Senpai pregnant, Yoshi breaks the silence by bluntly calling her antics "disgusting". This shocks the other friends and manages to fluster Nagatoro for once.
  • Character Tic: Pointing both index fingers for extra emphasis during her nonsequiturs.
  • Closet Geek: She can identify the Fusion Dance from Dragon Ball Z.
  • Curtains Match the Window: She has ochre eyes and hair.
  • D-Cup Distress: Implied Trope. In an example of Truth in Television, she's sometimes drawn a little hunched, suggesting by her posture that her "girls" have some mass pulling down.
  • The Ditz: She's described in a profile as a natural airhead who just loves Gamo-chan. She also has the Idiot Curl to go with it.
  • The Drag-Along: She rarely, if ever, does anything of her own volition. She's a follower through and through and is always indecisive whenever someone asks her what she wants to do, rather than what Gamo-chan or Nagatoro wants to do. When push comes to shove she'll first defer to Gamo-chan for guidance, then Nagatoro if that fails.
  • Dumb Blonde: Has a vacant open-mouthed cat smile, often just parrots what her friends say, and has blonde Girlish Pigtails to match. Her eyes are nearly always drawn with big empty irises in contrast to everyone else, adding to her vacant look. The anime downplays this by drawing her eyes with white highlights most of the time (flat eyes are retained for some expression shots, and arguably the black and white manga format conveys her vacant look the best since her eyes are colorless) but they're still less detailed than other characters's eyes.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Played with and subverted. In Chapter 6, she hangs with Nagatoro and two guys who were interested in her without Gamo-chan in sight. Furthermore, she is less ditzy, planning the aforementioned get-together on her own, and lacks many of the silly quirks that Yoshi tends to be known for. It's later implied in the fourth official comic anthology that she may have invited Nagatoro precisely because she herself is too shy and meek to deal with boys on her own in spite of her desire to do so. In the anime, the scene plays out (appropriately) with Sakura in her place instead.
  • Easily Impressed: She tends to be excited about whatever has Gamo-chan's attention, even when the item or event in question is relatively mundane.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She's willing to have fun and tease Senpai, but not to the point where it can become cruel.
  • Expressive Hair: Her pigtails fly up when she's surprised or excited. Her ahoge also does this.
  • Faster Than They Look: She's rather quick and the person who captures Senpai whenever he tries to run away from the group. She also outran the President during the school marathon, at least briefly. In a judo match, she did nothing but literally run circles around her opponent. While her opponent couldn't do anything, it got her disqualified.
  • Genius Ditz: When not parroting the other girls, Yoshi often shows surprisingly extensive knowledge and vocabulary. She makes pop culture references, quotes old poetry, and speaks foreign languages. The fan book explicitly labels her a "genius at one-liners".
Yoshi: “Countries may fall, but their rivers and mountains remain."
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her default hairstyle.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She collects stuffed animals and is easily bribed when offered a rare or expensive one.
  • Gratuitous English: When she's not parroting her friends, she often says words and phrases in English.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • The fourth official comic anthology describes her as "actually a pure and kind girl" who is very shy whenever she's on her own, explaining why she parrots everything Gamo-chan says. She's also mentioned to be very bad at talking to boys on her own and likes cutesy stuff, contributing to the "cute" aspect of the "Torocat" skit.
    • She is initially shown to be more socially driven than any of her friends, often being the catalyst for them to interact with other classmates, or otherwise, bail. This characterization eventually was given to Sakura, who has more social traits than Yoshi, while Yoshi was fitted into a more "follower" role.
    • She's a dog lover and owns a miniature dachshund.
    • She is something like The Heart in the group, as she's the only person Gamo-chan would listen to if they're pushing it with their teasing. She's also shown to be physically affectionate.
  • Idiot Hair: Didn't start out with it, but she eventually grows one, which continues to increase in prominence throughout the story to outrageous proportions.
  • Innocent Beta Bitch: She is a ditzy blonde who only teases Senpai when the other girls are around. When alone she is actually a shy person. An official anthology book even described her as "pure and kind".
  • Insult of Endearment: Calls Senpai "Paisen," because Gamo-chan says it.
  • Lovable Coward: She has the spine of an earthworm and is the first to get nervous and flustered when things aren't looking good.
  • Morality Pet: Extremely rare but she is capable of pulling the stops when she feels Gamo might be crossing a line.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: She desperately wants to play with Senpai's fluffy hair, but gets stopped by Nagatoro every time she tries.
  • Only-Child Syndrome: Yoshi is an only child, which may contribute to her dependence on her friends and her meekness when alone.
  • Parrot Exposition: When she's not repeating Gamo-chan's taunts, Yoshi has the tendency of spelling out the rest of the girls' schemes less euphemistically, such as in a 4koma where Sakura is revealed to have made a mascot out of Nagatoro's catgirl costume.
Sakura: So you see, it's like creating a fad behind the scenes to unearth potential demand.
    Nagatoro: Wow, that's smart.
Gamo-chan: You really put some thought into this, huh?
    Yoshi: STEALTH MARKETING?
Sakura: (indignantly fist slamming the table) It is not stealth marketing!!
    Nagatoro: It is stealth marketing.
  • Pokémon Speak: She randomly proclaims "Yoshi!" while attacking during her judo match.
  • Running Gag: She has several of them.
    • She tends to repeat the last word of what Gamo-chan says.
    • She wants to run her hands through Senpai's hair because it's enticingly fluffy.
    • Her ahoge continues to increase in size throughout the series, and no one ever questions it.
  • Scylla and Charybdis: Whenever Nagatoro and Gamo-chan fight, Yoshi tends to get caught in between, usually alongside Senpai (which is a weird aspect they have in common). She's not very good at handling her friends when they're angry.
  • Shout-Out: The anime acknowledges that she shares the same name as Yoshi from Super Mario, showcased by having her hatch from an egg while wearing a Yoshi-like helmet in the expanded version of Senpai's fantasy dream. The manga has yet to explain her name in any way.
  • Situational Sociability: As mentioned in other trope entries, Yoshi only acts up whenever her friends are around. She's an otherwise meek girl when alone.
  • Wardrobe Flaw of Characterization: Her free time wardrobe consists of a t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers or flip-flops, meaning she's not one to groom herself.
  • What the Fu Are You Doing?: What was Yoshi hoping to accomplish by literally just running circles around her opponent during her match at the school judo tournament? To throw said opponent out of the ring with a man-made tornado. She gets disqualified for her trouble.

Hey~ Hey~ What are you playing? A game? Teach me how to play? XX-kun is so funny~ let's play together sometime~ (...) YY-kun, you're such a great teacher~ I'd love to get a lesson from you~
—Sakura, Ch. 32, sowing seeds of jealousy

Sakura is the least-seen member of Nagatoro's clique, as she has an after-school part-time job. Though first introduced in Chapter 1, she isn't seen after Chapter 2 until Chapter 27. Once she discovers Senpai is the person the other girls had been teasing, she quickly joins in the mayhem.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In the anime adaptation of Chapter 6, Yoshi was replaced with Sakura, whereas in the manga she doesn't make a full-on appearance till much later.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Invoked and subverted. Sakura is the only girl in Nagatoro's clique who doesn't have one (as Yoshi's is ambiguous).
  • Art Evolution:
    • She was originally shown with long hair that extended beyond her shoulders. It's later stated that she cut it just because she felt like it.
    • As shown in the Kyoto School Trip arc (Ch. 100-108), she started growing her hair again.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Played with. She has a rather sweet and coy personality but uses this to manipulate people whenever she sees fit. In one of the compilations, she's described in a profile as haraguro ("two-faced"), nice on the outside but cruel inside. The girls used her to sow seeds of jealousy in a group of boys they find annoying and loud, having her flirt with them and let them fight among themselves over her, separating them and gaining silence and space in return. However, she later made an effort to befriend that group for real.
  • Character Catchphrase: An amused "ya da" (translatable as "oh no" or "ew") when finding something embarrassing.
  • Character Development: She ends up befriending the VR club boys she tried to break up with once she realized that her actions had consequences she could not control.
  • Cleans Up Nicely: Although she's already markedly pretty, she dresses up for Senpai for their pretend date. Much like Gamo-chan, she's very stylish.
  • Cool Big Sis: Alongside Gamo-chan, due to her calm nature and experience with relationships. She's also the oldest child in her home, having a little brother.
  • Coy, Girlish Flirt Pose: She is a master of them and uses them on every boy she talks to, Senpai included.
  • Daddy's Girl: The fourth official comic anthology shows her being accompanied by an older man that Senpai doesn't recognize... who turns out to be her actual doting father.
  • Didn't Think This Through: In Chapter 34, she flirts so much with a group of boys that one of them begins stalking her. In a later chapter, she ultimately befriends them.
  • The Ditz: She tends to speak as if she's half-awake or spacing out, although this is only an appearance.
  • Dumb Blonde: Played with. Unlike Yoshi, Sakura is not dumb, but she's lazy and procrastinating.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Albeit Sakura was first seen in Chapter 1, she would not receive characterization until dozens of chapters later in the manga. In the anime, on the other hand, she was given characterization in the adaptation of Chapter 6, replacing a part that originally belonged to Yoshi in the manga.
  • Eating the Eye Candy:
    • She blushes, smiles and goes "Wow~❤" at the President's nude self-portrait. Later she smiles and blushes when sees the President in a Playboy Bunny suit (which they had given to her in the first place).
    • She exclaims "Oh my, that's a nice body~❤" at the sight of a fit guy's chest and abs... however, he's Senpai's judo opponent, so Nagatoro gives her some side-eye.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Her eyes have a tired appearance to them. In the first chapter, she mentions having a job and given her ditzy personality could be a sign of exhaustion; this also explains why she's so eager to go to mixers, as she might not be able to socialize as much as she wants. Seems to have lost them around chapter 37, as she became a more regular character.
  • First-Name Basis: She's the only character whose first name is always used to refer to her. The others have last names, nicknames, and honorifics.
  • Gamer Chick: She ends up developing an actual interest in gaming and hangs around the school's gaming club on a regular basis.
  • Gyaru Girl: Among the girls she fits the stereotypical gyaru mold the most, both in appearance (while Nagatoro has a tan and Yoshi appears to have blond hair, only she seems to have both; since she's not a swimmer like Nagatoro, it must be for cosmetic reasons) and personality (as she is a flirt).
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Although she doesn't have a fighting background like Nagatoro and Gamo-chan (and it shows in her judo match, during which she barely tries at all), she is still shown to be able to do a loose-looking yet quite a functional arm-triangle choke, which she demonstrates in Yoshi for the kicks.
    • Seems to have an interest in video games and virtual reality, as after befriending its members she outright joins the school's VR club.
    • Sakura is a very sweet girl to the people she likes, and she's shown to be the most emotionally collected girl in her group of friends. This further implies that there's a hint of sincerity in the words that she uses to manipulate boys, as she knows what to appeal to.
  • Important Haircut: Invoked and subverted. The fourth official comic anthology states that she cut her hair just because she felt like it.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Out of the four, she is the one that has least interacted with Senpai, so she's not quite in the know regarding Senpai and Nagatoro. As such, she's more openly doting to him than she should be.
  • Loving Bully: Although she had started manipulating some classmates in order to sow seeds of jealousy in them after it backfired on her with one of them becoming a stalker on her, she actually made an effort and befriended them.
  • Mellow Fellow: She is usually the most laid-back and mellow member of her friendship circle.
  • Nice Girl: Played with. She's this towards Senpai, as she's the only one of the four who doesn't treat him badly and actually praises him when it's warranted. To other guys? She's slithery like an asp, at least whenever she wants.
  • Obliquely Obfuscated Occupation: She exclaims about having a job during her first appearance. Presumably, it's the reason she remains absent for several chapters, and why she seems and acts so tired all the time.
  • Polyamory: During the field trip, Sakura tells a story about how she broke up with a boy and immediately started dating his best friend, only for the ex to approach her and ask that they go back to the way things were before. She doesn't get to finish the story, but it's implied that in response she proposed dating both boys at the same time.
  • Punny Name: Her name "Sakura" invokedmay be one in hindsight because before it was revealed, she tried to act as a "circle crusher" or "circle crasher" to the gaming club, making them fight over her and driving them apart. This Japanese slang term is English, but it's rendered in Japanese as "saakuru kurasshaa", and shortened to "saakura". She's not outright called that term by the girls but rather an "assassin".
  • Really Gets Around:
    • Sakura is, let's say, a very open-minded girl when it comes to boys and romance (Ch. 58):
Sakura: My strike zone's pretty huge, so~ I'm fine with anyone, I guess-?
Nekoba: Doesn't that just make you a big slut?
Sakura: Anything they pitch can be caught, when I call upon my guardian spirit.
    • Later during Christmas, Nagatoro and Senpai stumble upon Sakura and her then-boyfriend in flagrancy at the nurse's office.
    • During the school trip (Ch. 104), Sakura heavily implies that she's open to a threesome:
Sakura: So I broke up with my boyfriend last week, right-? And then I got together with his best friend immediately after that- But then my ex came and told me that he wants us to go back to the way we were before, and since we're all friends anyway, I said the three of us shou- *(gets smacked with a pillow to the face)*
Gamo-chan: EXCITING STORIES ONLY!! NOT THAT KIND OF FILTH!
Sakura: I guess it's a bit too soon for you guys~
    Rabi-chan: That is so gross~
  • Smug Smiler: When Senpai denies that he has a girl he'd rather be on a date with... Oh, she knows.
  • The Tease: A more passive example than the rest of her friends. She employs sweet-talking and flirting instead of a more physical approach as they do. Just so, she's the only girl in her group that doesn't treat Senpai like a pet. The other two do warn Senpai that he's being "seduced". Later when she loses a judo match to another girl by pinning, she jokes that she's more used to pinning guys down.
  • Token Romance: She isn't hesitant to flirt with the opposite sex and is originally stated to be between boyfriends, and later has a new one that she spends Christmas with. Senpai and Nagatoro even end up accidentally finding her agressively making out with her new boyfriend in the nurse's office.
  • Wardrobe Flaw of Characterization: She usually wears her school blouse with one flap out of her skirt, symbolizing her relaxed personality.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: She wants to put Senpai in grappling holds, which she demonstrates on Yoshi by putting her in an arm triangle choke. The move, in this case, comes probably from judo, where it is called kata-gatame, but it is mostly used as a pinning maneuver there due to the art's ruleset, while its usage as a choke was first popularized in Professional Wrestling.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: When she sees a judo match with one guy pinning another, her thought is to find the "skinship between boys" to be hot.

Good work. I've made some good memories thanks to you.
—Arts Club President, Ch. 37

Sana Sunomiya is the president of the Arts Club (referred to as "President" for short) and Senpai's upperclassman. As a third-year student, she's semi-retired from the club, as she still manages its bureaucracy and logistics. She later graduates, leaving the club in Senpai's hands.
  • The Ace: In art. Senpai states that her artwork has been selected for exhibitions and even ranked 1st in a competition with university students. Later she was admitted to Tokyo University of the Arts (known as "Geidai" for short), the most prestigious art college in Japan, on her first try.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: She comes off as slightly less reasonable in the anime because some of her lines from the relevant chapter were absent in the corresponding episode, namely that she understands what Nagatoro is trying to say in defense of Senpai, but she can't just let the matter slide because the Student Council warned her already, and so she devises a challenge for Senpai so he can prove himself. While the anime does mention that the Student Council is involved, it still goes straight to the last part of her statement, making it look like the President has a much more personal role in antagonizing Senpai than she really has.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She is tall, beautiful, and somewhat intimidating, often with a cold or stern look on her face, and has dark purplish-brown hair.
  • Always Someone Better:
    • She's this for Senpai, who considers her unparalleled in her art.
    • She's also this for Nagatoro, as she's taller, shapelier, and more stunning than her.
  • Ambiguously Bi: During the bonus chapter 62.5, after reading a fanservice scene in a manga Naoto bought, Nagatoro blocked the door to reproduce the scene and won't open it unless two people do something lewd. Sunomiya was in the room next door and wanted to leave. She first tried something with Naoto, until Nagatoro "protects him", then she tried something with Nagatoro.
  • Animal Motifs: Rabbits/hares. This started when the girls made her wear a Playboy Bunny outfit, and later she was shown to be a fast runner. A bit of invokedFridge Brilliance also applies once her eyes were revealed to be red... like white rabbits.
  • Attractiveness Isolation: Implied Trope when it comes to Senpai. Senpai never quite tried to pursue her romantically because while he acknowledges how attractive she is, he just sees her as an incredibly talented artist whom he looks up to, so the thought of it is almost foreign to him (notably, in later chapters, he goes as far as to think that looking at her naked body is akin to viewing a sculpture instead of something lewd). However, the President's behavior towards him once Nagatoro came into the fold hints at the possibility that she was more accepting to the notion than he thought, given the chance.
  • Badass Armfold: She's often posed like this to convey her authority and demeanor, and also to support her large chest.
  • Bearer of Bad News: She comes to the Arts Club room to tell Senpai that the club is on the brink of disbandment by order of the Student Council due to the rumors surrounding the misuse of the room by rowdy students, and the fact that they only have one active member.
  • Benevolent Boss: She gives Senpai an opportunity to show her his work, thus preventing her from closing the club as per the student council's mandate. She's also quick on the uptake to realize that Nagatoro is Senpai's muse, and encourages him to pursue her.
  • Big Sister Mentor: Though she's an only child herself, she's implied to be one for her younger cousin, who's remarkably like her.
  • Boob-Based Gag: While she's normally busty, there are several scenes that exaggerate them for comedic effect. Many of the Imagine Spots tend to show her shirt struggling to keep her breasts from popping out.
  • Boobs-and-Butt Pose: Her first nude self-portrait seen in the story shows her this way.
  • Brutal Honesty: She will not hesitate to say that Senpai's artwork is boring and that it needs improvement.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Her background implies this is how the Student Council and the Public Morals Committee see her: a very competent club leader who has still an uncomfortable penchant for baring her body through artistic nudity. Later played quite literally when she dons bunny ears.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She has a very well-endowed figure that easily outranks Nagatoro's friends, who are in awe of her. Nagatoro is also often envious of her due to it.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The design of one of the characters in Senpai's manga seen in early chapters, including the very first, bears a strong resemblance to her. Tellingly, the manga character is depicted as parting from the protagonist, which turns out to mirror a flashback of Senpai's where she entrusts the club to him.
  • Club President: Of the Arts Club. As such, the honorific "Buchou" serves as her title.
  • The Comically Serious: She treats everything seriously while everyone else is flustered, intimidated or else taking it more lightly, especially when it comes to art.
  • The Confidant: Implied to serve as one for her cousin Sunomiya (and perhaps it's mutual) from the kind of stuff she's advised her about. Tries to be one for Senpai after immediately sensing that he's troubled, but Senpai is too shy and thus her cousin becomes his intermediary (an intermediary for an intermediary) so she can give him advice.
  • Cool Big Sis: Implied to be one for her cousin, who clearly takes after her and passes on some words of guidance from her to Senpai in turn.
  • Depending on the Artist: Before her hair color was shown in art by 774 himself, guest artists gave her red or black hair.
  • Don't Make Me Destroy You: She states that she doesn't want to close the art club down, but she's being forced to by the student council unless the club members stand up to the saucy rumors that have plagued it.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Senpai is so intimidated by her that when he hears her footsteps coming from the hallway, he hides Nagatoro and her friends.
    • Machida, Hashimoto and Aihara refer to her as "Shogun" due to her no-nonsense attitude and intense personality, as well as basically attaining her goal by show of strength (as Shoguns did against the Japanese emperors), aside from the fact that competing against her led to Machida becoming a "Rōnin".
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Her bust isn't as big nor her skirt as long in her first appearance, compared to her current appearance. But for some reason, the anime seems to have gone with the shorter skirt.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Her cousin and Senpai went to middle school together, and by association, she may have been his upperclassman back then too.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: When Senpai shows the girls a self-portrait of her which shows her rather curvy body, they're shocked and uneasy - except Sakura who blushes and says "Wow" with a heart symbol. Later, Sakura again blushes and smiles while the rest are intimidated by the sight of her in a bunny costume (which they themselves had given to her in the first place).
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": She's only addressed by her position and nobody calls her by name. Her family name, Sunomiya, is only revealed (in full) after she graduates - as is her given name or nickname, as her younger cousin refers to her as "Sana-neesan". After she graduates, Senpai continues to call her "President" out of respect, despite technically being the current Club President himself, and even though he's aware of her real name.
  • Foil
    • To Nagatoro. She's tall, shapely, dutiful, and brooding, while Nagatoro is dainty, less shapely, and rowdy.
    • To Senpai. She's authoritative and confident of her art beyond her own reputation, while Senpai is made out of jelly.
  • Friendly Enemy: She actually doesn't mind Nagatoro at all as long as her presence in the Arts Club room keeps Senpai artistically productive. In that respect, she's a Shipper on Deck for them, and she's a good sport even when she is challenged by Nagatoro and her friends.
  • Godiva Hair: In her second nude self-portrait, a strand of her long hair covers her left breast, while she covers the other with a blanket.
  • Going Commando: When in her motorbiking outfit, she visibly doesn't wear a bra and eventually reveals she doesn't wear panties either. The fact that she has a penchant for undressing to begin with implies that it may always be the case whenever wearing said outfit.
  • Graceful Loser: She apologizes to Senpai for getting disqualified by the Public Morals Committee. Even when Nagatoro and the girls gloat to her face that they beat her, she agrees without a fuss. Further, she agrees to them imposing a penalty on her in the spirit of fairness despite Senpai's protests, since she had imposed a penalty on them in case they lost. She seems to be more annoyed at the committee than at the girls.
    • Sore Loser: Downplayed, as while she is unhappy that she lost, she takes it in stride. Similarly, she's humiliated at having to wear a bunny suit, but she consented to getting penalized and she finds the experience stimulating.
  • Heir to the Dojo: Played with. The fourth official comic anthology shows that she's her grandpa's kendo student which contributes to her strict discipline and stern attitude. But she's not set to actually inherit the dojo, at least for now, since she's aiming for an art college.
  • Hellish Pupils: Her eyes flare up with concentric designs when she's agitated.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • She is shown to be very dutiful and encouraging in spite of her intimidating presence.
    • She is quick to recognize Nagatoro as Senpai's muse before he does, encouraging him not to let her get away.
    • In spite of her intimidating aura, she and Nagatoro can inadvertently get into the same goofy situations to Senpai's discomfort.
    • One of the reasons she hounds Senpai is due to the fact that she knows that he is a potentially excellent and prolific artist, and will stop at nothing to encourage him. It's also implied to be the main reason she kept the Arts Club running in spite of Senpai being the only member.
    • She's shown to be a good runner during a school marathon, despite her chosen school activity being non-physical, and much despite her choice of outfit (she's wearing a bunny girl costume while running).
    • She's revealed to practice martial arts, namely kendo since her family has a dojo, and judo, in which she is a black belt, and offers to give Senpai extended training.
    • Played with. Albeit her intention is at best ambiguous, she has a penchant for making moves and behaving suggestively towards Senpai, possibly showing a glimmer of an attraction to him. However, her stoicism makes her actions invokedtremendously hard to read, so it's never quite shown what her true intentions are towards either him or his relationship with Nagatoro.
    • She often chooses to go nude even when not making new artwork. To her, it’s a very personal form of self-expression that explores ways of “freeing” and “oppressing” herself through public nudity. She also reveals that her making nude art is a way of pushing herself to overcome anxiety.
  • Home Nudist: When she's practicing Kendo at home. Later she's also shown eating breakfast in the nude together with her cousin (who is in her underwear).
  • Huge Schoolgirl: She easily towers over the main cast. Somewhat justified in that she is late in her third year when she is introduced, however, she was tall as a second year as well.
  • I Read It for the Articles: President doesn't actually like wearing the Playboy Bunny outfit Nagatoro and her friends gave her, but she finds the humiliation ritual factor of it and the feelings that arise from wearing it useful for her art. Why she decides to voluntarily wear it again during the school marathon, pumps and all, is anyone's guess.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Played with, since it's not clear if her feelings are romantic. At the very least she respects Senpai as a fellow artist, and due to him being her kohai in the club, a protegee of sorts, but she's also more than aware that Senpai holds affections for Nagatoro now, so she encourages him to treat Nagatoro as his muse.
  • Implied Love Interest: There are several hints that Senpai has/had a crush on her. She seemingly served as an inspiration for the self-insert main character's love interest in Senpai's manga, a swordswoman who resembles her (it's revealed later that she practices kendo). Also, Senpai's behavior and thoughts are of fondness when she comes to mind. He is both intimidated and glad to see her in person after a long time until his mood is deflated when she gets mad at him.
  • Insult of Endearment: Nagatoro refers to her as "that Bunny/Hare Girl" due to the revealing bunny outfit she wears. In response, she refers to Nagatoro as "that Cat Girl".
  • It's Personal: It's implied that she's personally offended at the fact that Senpai may have been abusing her trust in him and misusing the place she's been providing to him to pursue his art.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • Played with. She berates Senpai due to the rumors of misuse of the room by non-club members (which happens to be true), and that this has made him unproductive (which is a rough assumption that is false). Nagatoro calls her out on that last one.
    • Senpai later justifies her anger, as he tells the girls that it was both his and their fault together. That they eked out of her anger doesn't mean that they didn't do the deed.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Turns out, she's a surprisingly good sport towards Nagatoro and her friends in spite of how she came off in her introduction, and further interactions show that she too wants to make Senpai climb out of his funk.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: A milder example, but when Nagatoro catches the President stripping off her bunny outfit in front of Senpai, she says it was just a joke. Later, she claims as much again after she goes along with a prank of Nagatoro's, which involves her almost going nude again and hitting on both of them.
  • Large Ham: She can get all dramatic when she's fired up about art.
  • Mentor Archetype:
    • She is one of the reasons Senpai is in the Arts Club, as she provided him with inspiration and encouragement.
    • Manifests in a Stern Teacher kind of way. She's a no-nonsense disciplinarian who takes Senpai to task for apparently not taking the club seriously and letting outsider delinquent-ish girls use it as their hangout and is prepared to file for its disbandment. But she is willing to listen to what he or Nagatoro has to say for themselves and gives Senpai a chance to prove himself and keep the club going.
    • While she challenges Senpai to beat her in an art contest with the future of the club at stake, she also pushes him to give it his all and embrace his artistic side to the fullest. She tells him that it's not enough to do something well, it must also involve "love", and that art is about "chasing after something".
    • Overlapping with Shipper on Deck, after the festival arc, she orders Senpai and Nagatoro to go out and sketch stuff together.
    • She's concerned about Senpai's career path. She's pleased to hear that he's aiming for an art college like her (though not necessarily the same one since it's left ambiguous).
    • Upon learning that Senpai plans on joining the school judo tournament, she makes him spar with her and offers to give him some extended training.
    • After graduating, she pops up to give him some direct advice about love.
    • In a flashback of Senpai's, he's in a group led by her during a school trip, touring old places to appreciate the artworks and other art-related sights. Later that day, she and Senpai take a walk by themselves, where she reassures him that he will be able to do well in the same trip leader role in the future.
    • Nagatoro asks her for help when Senpai has anxiety issues preparing for his art college exams, and she shows up to help in her own way.
  • Milking the Giant Cow: When she tells Senpai to go after Nagatoro and not let her slip away, she dramatically sweeps out her arm and gazes into the distance. When Senpai does run off while she looks on, he runs in a different direction from the way she had previously faced.
  • Modesty Bedsheet: A surprisingly frequent look for her, as she tends to draw self-portraits in the nude at school, and covers herself in a white blanket when she talks to Senpai and/or Nagatoro.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Played With. What would otherwise be normal fanservice comes off as quirky due to her serious and often nonchalant manner, particularly when combined with her passion for art, including the nude human form.
    • While she has a curvy body, she dresses conservatively in school uniform with a much longer skirt than Nagatoro and the other girls.
    • The previous year, for the club's school festival exhibit, she did a self-portrait of herself in the nude (from the back, but showing sideboob and butt). According to Senpai, her painting was very popular with the boys for reasons she didn't intend, as she did it as just another art piece and she stood beside the display nonchalantly. Senpai even praises her confidence and skill in making the painting and her willingness to "sacrifice herself" by baring in the name of art. Her lack of concern about the boys' reactions may also show that she didn't care or didn't even catch on. It's clarified later that she doesn't care.
    • Senpai also argues that her nude painting itself (and thus she by proxy) is truly amazing instead of just being "amazingly lewd" as Nagatoro says, since it not only ranked high in the festival exhibition competition for being an excellent painting overall, it also did the same in exhibitions outside the school, even winning an award. He also points out that it was allowed by the school management even with its subject matter, so it was recognized as legitimate art and not merely titillating.
    • She has no qualms about talking to Senpai while she is wearing just sheet, or even taking off everything in front of him (she only stops because Nagatoro comes in) but is apparently indifferent to his unease, and she remains serious and focused.
    • For the current school festival, she does another fully nude self-portrait from the front (3/4 to be exact) with her nipples and crotch only being hidden by her hair, draped cloth, or her legs. When interviewed, she says that though some will disapprove, she truly believes that the nude body is one of the eternal themes all artists should inevitably pursue with themselves as the subject.
    • The girls make her wear a Playboy Bunny outfit as a penalty for technically losing their contest. She finds it embarrassing and oppressive, but feels even more inspired to push her boundaries as an artist - which may tie into her going fully nude in person, if not for Nagatoro.
    • She models for Senpai in a school swimsuit, so Nagatoro joins in wearing the same. They both lose their balance doing the same pose, falling on top of Senpai who cops a feel of both their chests. She's unfazed by this, only thinking Senpai has "much to learn" even as he runs off aghast. It's implied this isn't the first time she's modeled for other club members, and she tells him not to be afraid since she's wearing a swimsuit, which could imply she wore less in the past.
    • She advises Senpai to "free yourself" and seek inspiration in the outdoors, and he imagines her prancing around nude, making the same stern expression.
    • Some chapters later she sends Senpai and Nagatoro up into the mountainous woods beside the school in order to sketch, and they indeed run into her while she is completely naked after the wind blew away her robe or sheet while she was taking reference photos. She makes no effort to cover herself in front of them, treats the situation very matter-of-factly, and was on her way to just hiking down in the buff, and it's only through Scenery Censor and Barbie Doll Anatomy that it doesn't get more explicit. She objects to Senpai's assumption that she went all the way there naked but for a robe or sheet, since she went there in uniform, and then left her clothes at the mountain's base, which means she still walked that way in public for some distance.
    • She runs a school marathon wearing the same bunny outfit the girls put her in, which Senpai hopes was for artistic reasons or something. But the school did allow costumes to be worn so she technically wasn't doing anything wrong.
    • She outright goes completely nude in the clubroom to "get a feel for its atmosphere" for the last time before Christmas/winter break starts, prompting Nagatoro to call her a "horny bunny". Later that night, she walks around in the halls while completely nude and is revealed to have done this regularly after hours, unintentionally starting a school urban legend of a "pale female ghost". Barbie Doll Anatomy is in effect again.
    • She gives Senpai some judo training after Gamo and Yoshi told her about his intentions to join the school judo tournament. He notices she's not wearing anything underneath her gi for whatever reason and he ends up with a faceful of cleavage when she pins him, to his discomfiture and Nagatoro's horror since her friends had playfully told her about it too. She herself acts as if nothing happened.
    • After she starts college, she shows up back at high school every day to pick up her cousin while riding a sidecar motorcycle, wearing a leather outfit with the top so open that she's almost or sometimes showing her navel, and sporting a helmet that has bunny ears on it. If she was outrageous before, this adds a couple of pegs past that threshold.
    • When Senpai has confidence issues after he starts taking cram school for art college, Nagatoro asks her for help and she shows up at the club to reassure him of his skills. She then tells him that her technique to deal with anxiety is, in short, doing nude sketching - and she takes off her clothes. The eavesdropping Nagatoro barges in and objects, and gets an earful from her about the purity of nudity and nude art, to which Senpai and her cousin agree. Nagatoro insists on being Senpai's model again, and she in turn insists that Nagatoro has to be nude this time. Nagatoro agrees, but plays it off as a chance to tease him. In response, she insists that unless Nagatoro takes this seriously, she will be the model, and she sets the sketch session for the following day. Thus the next day she waits for Senpai to collect himself while she wears only a towel. She tells him that she won't force him to draw her and that she's here partly out of her own desire but also because Nagatoro asked her to help him. Moved by Nagatoro's efforts, Senpai resolves to go ahead with drawing her nude, but then Nagatoro shows up wearing only a towel too. She's impressed by Nagatoro's determination and leaves them to it.
    • Since Senpai has an exam for cram school coming up, she shows up to tell him she'll take him to a special three-day training camp. She says she will "take off a layer" (akin to "lend a hand" in English) in the same breath as literally taking off her clothes. Her cousin even echoes her, in both senses. She also says that she will squeeze it all out from him.
  • The Muse: As stated in Implied Love Interest, she might have been the object of Senpai's artistic escapades before Nagatoro showed up.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her biker outfits and her swimsuit both have deep v-necklines that go down or past her midriff.
  • Nice Girl: She may be stone-faced and curt, but she completely lacks malice. She's among the nicest characters in the story.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Upon her introduction, Nagatoro's friends immediately joked that she could be Senpai's ex, and Nagatoro gets jealous about her being a significant girl in his life before the two of them ever met, which is reinforced by his flashbacks about her mentoring him. Yet for a lack of better terms, she's at the most Senpai's stone-faced uber-sexy friend, one of the few people he's close to, who doesn't mind getting naked while he's around.
    • It's shown that Senpai is very dear to her as her precious friend and underclassman, and she was quick to realize that Nagatoro inspires in him what she herself couldn't. As such, it's of utmost importance to her that his relationship with Nagatoro brings him happiness, and that it makes him productive in his artistic endeavors as a result.
    • Both she and Hana are sought over by Senpai for direct advice on his relationship with Nagatoro.
  • Not So Above It All: She plays along after Nagatoro blocks the clubroom door with the sofa and puts up a sign saying "no one leaves until erotic stuff happens", since she was self-modeling nude again in the inner room. Since Senpai had refused to do such things (so casually) with Nagatoro, she offers to help him out, with her hand positioned to take off her sheet. Nagatoro protests, so she says that only the two of them are left, and she lifts up the stunned girl's chin as if going for a kiss. She remarks that this is unexpected, but will be educational. In a panic, Nagatoro drags the sofa away in no time and runs out. She plays this all off as a joke again, prods Senpai to go after Nagatoro, and smiles as he runs off.
  • Nudity Equals Honesty: She's known for being profoundly straightforward and sincere, and for being unabashed by nudity. If she has a grand declaration to make, she'll be naked or on the way there.
  • Obliviously Beautiful: Played with. She considers her body a powerful tool to convey the sense of artistic pursuit in a holistic manner but seems largely unaware of how truly stunning she is or the effect she has on people.
  • Only-Child Syndrome: She's an only child and lives in a household that includes her parents and grandparents. It's stated that she's her grandpa's kendo pupil, which contributes to her strict discipline and stern attitude. That being said, she does see her cousin as a younger sibling.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Much like Senpai, the president's name was never spoken ever since her introduction until chapter 83 due to her being Sunomiya's cousin, most likely making her family name the same. A much earlier panel did show her family name partially, and supplementary material seemed to hint at it, but it was only outright revealed with her cousin's introduction. Chapter 84 seems to make her given name out to be Sana.
  • Oxymoronic Being:
    • Her behavior in particular does not match her looks. She behaves in a largely asexual manner while being sexy as hell and exuding sexiness in every inch of her artwork. Her artwork is as striking as her own indifference to it.
    • She's at the same time the most serious and collected character in the series, while also being the most outrageous.
  • Our Nudity Is Different: She's remarkably indifferent to nudity and to be seen nude. Both Nagatoro and Senpai are witnesses to this more often than they'd like. It's also shown that this is a quirk of hers, as her grandfather decries her penchant for showing her skin.
  • Perpetual Frowner: She is very terse and serious, showing herself with an intimidating frown or scowl most of the time. However, she is very passionate and has a true artist's soul. The few times she's seen smiling, it's likely to be art-related like when she's feeling proud of her kohai, or when she's visibly approving of the leads' relationship.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: A common reaction she elicits from Senpai and Nagatoro.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: She is first introduced trying to find a reason not to allow the Student Council to close the club altogether, and she tells Nagatoro that she understands what the latter is trying to say in defense of Senpai, but since she can't just let things slide due to the Student Council's warnings, she allows Senpai an opportunity to prove himself. When she loses the competition, she gives up gracefully and actively finds ways to encourage him artistically and other ways to keep Nagatoro around him, as the girl was his inspiration.
  • The Rival: Nagatoro sees her as one for Senpai's affection, though it seems she herself doesn't look at Senpai romantically. Her main advantage is that she has his respect and admiration.
  • Romantic Runner-Up:
    • Played with initially, but ultimately subverted. She's poised to be a rival for Nagatoro towards Senpai's affections, but it's further shown that despite how he may have viewed her in the past, it seems the President's own interest in Senpai is not quite romantic in nature, as all she really wants for Senpai is for him to be artistically productive and to be happy in his own way.
    • In general, the more interactions she has with Senpai and Nagatoro, the more she realizes how fruitful their relationship is. In hindsight, the President alone was not able to bring this out in Senpai even though he has nothing but respect for her. He may have lusted over the President, but Nagatoro is the girl he likes.
  • Sex Sells: Zigzagged Trope. The President is well aware that the nude human form is always a striking subject in art, but there's never any salacious intent on her end. Her pieces featuring nude self-portraits are popular, but the Male Gaze on the part of the viewers seems to eclipse any artistic vision she may have intended, not that she seems to notice.
  • Sexy Shirt Switch: When Senpai catches her outside naked, he offers her his dress shirt while he goes to retrieve her uniform. Then Nagatoro runs up before she even puts it on and Senpai has to say it's Not What It Looks Like.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl:
    • The President is perfectly comfortable with nudity. She doesn't seem to mind if anyone, man or woman, sees her naked. Both of the paintings she submits to the Cultural Festival are nude portraits of herself. She often wears a Modesty Towel to take nude pictures of herself for her portraits, once wears a Playboy Bunny outfit for a marathon, and has even streaked around the school after hours. In spite of all the Fanservice-y situations she gets caught in, she otherwise acts in a largely asexual manner and her nudity is done for non-lewd reasons. It gets to the point that Senpai outright thinks she gives off more of a pure aesthetic vibe while naked instead of lewdness.
    • She later starts considering cutting down her nudity, as it starts to affect other people in ways she didn't intend, even conversing with Senpai exclusively through phone (and not video) whenever she's nude at home, as she doesn't want to harm her friendship with him (and Hana's by extension).
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • When Nagatoro runs off heartbroken after she witnessed Senpai alone with the President in a Modesty Towel, the President tells Senpai to go after Nagatoro.
    • She tells them to sketch stuff together for the club in places like the town zoo and the mountains beside the school, on the pretext of having her learn from him.
    • She's amused when he goes off after Nagatoro when the latter is too rattled by her... energy, after turning the tables on the latter's attempts to tease Senpai sexually by teasing them both in that way (and again she claims it was a joke after the fact).
    • After Senpai tells her about his plans to get into an art college like her, she notes that it's unlike him to be so straightforward and asks if Nagatoro had anything to do with it.
    • While Senpai declines her offer to train him for the judo tournament since Nagatoro is doing that already, she's nevertheless pleased.
    • After her cousin tells Senpai that he really should just ask Nagatoro out on a date already and tells her about this, she follows this up by telling Senpai that there's nothing else he should do but follow his heart.
    • She shows up to help out Senpai with preparing for cram school stuff, partly out of her own desire, but also because Nagatoro sought her out. And because her chosen way to help is to have Senpai do nude sketching, she subtly prods Nagatoro into posing nude for him, though not without satisfying herself that Nagatoro is ready to take it seriously.
  • Shout-Out: Seems to take some cues from Scáthach of Fate/Grand Order in terms of hair, bust, eyes, seniority, attitude, and even the bunny suit, and her motorbike and cleavage-baring biker outfit is likely a homage to Fujiko Mine from the classic Lupin III franchise, who pioneered that combo within anime/manga and is famously buxom.
  • Show, Don't Tell: Unlike her cousin Hana, she doesn't adhere to outright telling Senpai her thoughts, but rather would hint at him towards those for him to figure them out on his own. The problem is, she leaves her reasoning mostly out of the equation, often bewildering both Senpai and Nagatoro on what was her rationale... for ending up naked.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: To Nagatoro, who sees her as a sort of rival over Senpai, besides being jealous of her figure. Her generally stern and cold attitude towards everyone doesn't help, but she's not actually seeking to antagonize Nagatoro and is more than aware of how important Nagatoro is to Senpai as his muse. And she seems to see Senpai as a kindred soul to be encouraged and nurtured instead of in romantic terms. Like Nagatoro she's seeking to make him a better person, but she particularly focuses on his art skills.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She's the reason why the Arts Club has kept on running in spite of having a single member (Senpai), as she handles the logistics and bureaucracy, even after being semi-retired.
  • So Proud of You:
    • She's proud of Senpai for his festival paintings which were made with and convey "love", despite any technical nitpicks.
    • She's impressed when he tells her that he's aiming for an art college like her.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She's tall, shapely, and has striking looks. Judging by her self-portraits and the reactions from those that have seen them, she's nothing short of a bombshell.
  • The Stoic: She usually shows no emotion other than frowning, which can make it invokedhard to read her intentions over stuff like what exactly her feelings are for her kohai or if she's really a closet exhibitionist, as Nagatoro thinks (that is, she does her public nudity-related activities really because it makes her horny). She's only Not So Stoic when she gets passionate about talking about art.
  • Toplessness from the Back: The subject of her previous year's self-portrait.

It's been a while, Hachiouji-senpai.
—Sunomiya, Ch. 82

Hana Sunomiya is a first year who joins Senpai's Fine Arts Club after everyone moves up a year. She is also the President's younger cousin and Senpai's former clubmate when they were still in middle school together. Just as passionate as her cousin, she's a close friend to Senpai, whom she greatly respects and looks up to.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In season 2 of the anime she's revealed through a new scene of her and the President together before the current school year ends/the new one starts, so she's not in high school yet. In the manga, on the first day of the new school year, she appears suddenly out of nowhere as a cliffhanger by interrupting a moment between Nagatoro and Senpai, wanting to join the club and being on Last-Name Basis with him, and her relation to the President is the punchline capping off the next chapter.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Senpai uses the more affectionate honorific "Sunomiya-kun" when talking with her. It's appropriate because she's his kouhai, and more affectionate than the neutral "-san", but not as possibly patronizing or even suggestive as "-chan" when coming from a "superior" guy who's not a family member (hence Gamo-chan can be called that by her girl group of peers with no issue, and Nagatoro does call her "Sunomiya-chan").
    • Gamo-chan, Sakura, and Yoshi refer to her as "Little Rabbit".
  • Animal Motifs: Rabbits/hares just like her cousin. Nagatoro calls her the "little rabbit" and she's drawn with a bunny-like mouth and teeth (but not outright buck-teeth) when strongly emoting. She even takes to wearing bunny ears on her riding helmet like her cousin.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: By the time of her introduction, she's effectively the youngest character in the series, replacing Nagatoro before her.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: She's busty like her cousin though not to her level yet. Gamo-chan teases Nagatoro about it, calling her a "massive new rival". The previous chapter's opening splash text also called her "utterly terrifying".
  • The Comically Serious: Just like her cousin, she's no smiling cookie. However, she's markedly more expressive.
  • The Confidant:
    • Appears to see her cousin as one (and perhaps it's mutual), based on the kind of stuff her cousin has advised her about. In turn, she acts as this for Senpai by coaxing his feelings out, then promptly spills the beans to her cousin so she can act as his confidant as well.
    • With Senpai, as she appears to be one of the few people in his life he completely trusts.
  • Everyone Went to School Together: Sunomiya and Senpai went to middle school together, implying in turn that it may have been the case also for the President and Senpai. (But not the Sunomiya cousins themselves, as the younger Sunomiya is three years her cousin's junior, and middle school in Japan is for three years.)
  • Family Theme Naming: She and her cousin have nearly identical names.
  • First-Name Basis: Naturally with her cousin. It's she who reveals the President's given name to the reader, and in turn, the President later says her given name.
  • Foil:
    • To her cousin Sana in terms of their approach to Senpai. Sana (the Prez) wants Senpai to focus on finding love for the sake of his artistic expression, while Hana wants him to be happy regardless of what (or whomever) he pursues. As such, Hana is more direct in her advice and support toward Senpai. This also ties right into the social dynamics between the three of them. The Prez is very much conducting herself as Senpai's senpai while Hana is very much conducting herself as Senpai's kouhai, because they are that to him.
    • She's Senpai's response to Nagatoro's friends, often posing as their opponent for his sake and not letting them get too intrusive with Senpai and Nagatoro's relationship.
  • Home Nudist: Downplayed. She's shown eating breakfast in her underwear, together with her cousin who is nude.
  • Hot-Blooded: She's certainly more reactionary and irascible than her cousin Sana.
  • Innocent Innuendo: She tells Senpai "My body has yet to know love". Which probably means romantic love, but did she have to say "my body"...
  • It Runs in the Family:
    • Just like her cousin, she likes fine arts, speaks in a somewhat grandiose manner, claims to see the beauty in various things, can match Nagatoro's pace with her own and is rather stoic to her antics, and seems to have no issues getting naked, even volunteering to do so to model for Senpai.
    • Just as the President's antics have clearly rubbed off on her, the President immediately understands everything and concurs with her when she spills the beans on Senpai's situation.
    • Like her cousin she takes a dim view of Nagatoro's friends, even when they say they're friends of Senpai too.
  • Large Ham: To comedic levels. Her passionate nature is directly tied to how she expresses herself, and she expresses herself loudly.
  • Last-Name Basis: With Senpai, as her name isn't revealed until the extras after Chapter 86.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Senpai's relationship with Nagatoro has taken huge strides because of her support towards him, as she's one to counsel being brave and daring, as well as being sincere with his feelings towards Nagatoro. Girl's the best wingwoman he can ever hope for.
  • Milking the Giant Cow: She gets theatrical when she's talking to Senpai about love, telling Senpai that he needs to reach out and grab it himself (while making grabbing/squeezing gestures with both hands) and quoting her cousin who told her that "Love is something one must seek out and take" (while doing the classic bent-arm declamation pose).
  • Nice Girl: She is a doting friend to Senpai regardless of her eccentricities, and seems to utterly enjoy the fact that he's in love. She's also more openly affectionate towards him than her cousin.
  • The Not-Love Interest: Introduced as another girl from Senpai's past, unknowingly (or not) bursting onto the scene in the middle of a romantic moment, coming across as a potential love rival due to him mentoring her, thus harboring a great deal of respect and affection for him, and this is reinforced by flashbacks of them in middle school. Her regular presence around him also coincides with Nagatoro hanging out in the art club room less due to the latter's own club activities. Yet she is quickly revealed to support him and Nagatoro being together, and shown to be among his truest friends alongside her cousin Sana.
  • Not So Stoic: Played with and subverted. At the outset, it's shown that she's The Comically Serious as the President before her, but further chapters show that she's just as or even more expressive than her cousin when talking about love and romance (as opposed to art).
  • Romantic Runner-Up: Played with and subverted. A similar case as her cousin, but presented more directly and in fewer chapters. She is first presented as a sort of interloper between Senpai and Nagatoro, but upon learning of their liaison, she becomes an enthusiastic Shipper on Deck.
  • Romantic Wingman: Her role in the story for Senpai, more so than anyone else.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • Upon seeing Senpai's art pieces featuring Nagatoro, she immediately identifies her as his muse (even calling her a goddess) and hurriedly tells him to take Nagatoro to a date. The Arts Club President later gives him a further push after she rushes to tell her about this, despite/because of his reluctance and embarrassment to do so himself, and she gives him a thumbs-up in the background while her cousin is talking.
    • She also starts non-maliciously referring to Nagatoro as a "Demoness" just because Senpai referred to Nagatoro as such, and even intends to defend their first real date from Gamo-chan and Yoshi's impending sabotage (or so she thinks) and ropes her cousin into joining her.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Like her cousin, she seems to have absolutely no qualms about stripping naked to be a model, even having to have Senpai and Nagatoro tell her to stop stripping several times. The only discernable difference between her and her cousin in this regard is that she actually blushes a little when volunteering herself, possibly just meaning she's less experienced.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: One of her main functions in the story:
    • Upon hearing about his liaison with Nagatoro, she outright tells Senpai to take her on a date.
    • Upon witnessing Senpai and Nagatoro half-heartedly denying that they want to try each other's bentos, Sunomiya immediately calls them out, asking whether it's okay with them. They relent that they do want to.
  • The Stoic: Played with. Initially, she seems unfazed by Nagatoro's actions towards Senpai but later shows unbridled enthusiasm at the idea of them engaging in romance.
  • Through His Stomach: Nagatoro and the girls catch her feeding Senpai a bento she made herself in order to make up for accidentally disrupting their date yesterday. Nagatoro can do little else but seethe and call her his "wife" while she pointedly keeps feeding him, and Senpai even says she's as diligent a cook as she is an artist. When she declares her intentions to do the same tomorrow, Nagatoro insists on taking over, and with further nudging from her and Gamo-chan, Senpai accepts and volunteers to do the same for Nagatoro. It's implied by Sunomiya's expressions that this is exactly what she wanted to happen.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: She looks almost exactly like her older cousin only with shorter hair.
    • In the manga their hair is shaded identically, but the anime gives her more purplish hair compared to the President's purplish-brown, likely to extend the Shout-Out to Fate/Grand Order since this is akin to Scáthach's Alternate Self, Scáthach-Skadi.
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Senpai, the object of her utmost respect. Many of Senpai's relationships are not that well-defined, but Sunomiya is Senpai's friend through thick and thin.
  • Unknown Rival: She is this for Nagatoro, who sees her as another unbridled exhibitionist like the President, albeit just like her cousin, it's not mutual. She is able to see how much good Nagatoro has brought to Senpai's artistry and wants him to have Nagatoro in his life.

Women's Judo Club

    Orihara
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orihara_anime_profile.png
Anime
Manga
Voiced by: Kaori Maeda (Japanese), Azucena Miranda (Latin American Spanish)

Nagatoro's former judo rival as a child, who is now a candidate for Japan's Olympic Judo Team. She's a fellow first-year with Nagatoro and the girls.

  • The Ace: A massively skilled young judoka, whose growth unwittingly came at Nagatoro's expense. Or unwittingly became an excuse for Nagatoro not to grow as well.
  • Action Girl: An Olympic-level judoka in the making, and one of the strongest fighters shown in the series so far, by her own admission only behind Nagatoro's siblings whom she has yet to be shown facing. She's so good that Gamo-chan wasn't even able to sweep her off her feet to pin her.
  • Black Bead Eyes: Sometimes drawn with them (with minimal highlights at most) while happily and innocently smiling, in contrast to all others in the scene and somewhat akin to the "pure and kind" Yoshi's round blank eyes and open-mouthed smile.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Nagatoro's last judo fight against Orihara consisted of her sweeping the floor with our dear protagonist. It was such a one-sided beatdown that Nagatoro was robbed of all the confidence she had on her judo skills, making her quit competitive judo.
  • Determinator: As Nagatoro tells it, back in the day Orihara was pretty weak and constantly lost whenever they sparred together, which often sent her into tears. But she doggedly kept at it and slowly improved until she finally beat her. Years later, she's now an Olympic team candidate. (This also makes her a Foil for Nagatoro, who constantly won matches and even tournaments due to natural talent, but got demoralized and quit after apparently just one loss to her.)
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She first appears as a friendly girl Senpai meets when he goes to the first-year wing looking for Nagatoro. After recognizing the nickname "Hayacchi", she happily points him toward her classroom. She sticks out by having a fully drawn face in contrast to the usual eyeless mobs and gets a fair bit of face time. Later, 774 teased readers about her name and possible significance in the official fan book, designating her as "???".
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Her hair is much darker in her first appearance.
  • Genki Girl: A bundle of energy and positivity. Almost never seen without a smile on her face.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: Inverted. Nagatoro notes that when they attended the same dojo, Orihara didn't have the natural talent for Judo that Nagatoro had and would frequently get beaten. However, her sheer perseverance eventually allowed her to deal a Curb-Stomp Battle to Nagatoro, and she's now considered a major contender to represent Japan with her Judo, in the Olympics no less.
  • Last-Name Basis: Her given name is unknown and everyone refers to her by her family name.
  • Location Theme Naming: Her surname is taken from Orihara Station in Saitama Prefecture, which follows the railway station theme naming of characters.
  • Nice Girl: One of the nicest girls in the cast, seemingly without any mischievous tendencies to speak of, unlike the others. She's quick to offer help and advice, and while she's devoted to her sport, she doesn't hold any malice toward her opponents.
  • Oblivious to Hatred: Played with. Orihara doesn't seem to be aware of how much she disheartened Nagatoro for unwittingly getting her to quit competitive Judo by beating her, remaining cordial and enthusiastic regardless. Nagatoro neither hates nor resents Orihara, but still avoids her and feels uncomfortable about how awkward she makes her feel.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: After witnessing Nagatoro's significant improvement in her skills during the judo training camp, Orihara declares that Nagatoro must not lose before facing her in the upcoming tournament.
  • Reused Character Design: Looks alarmingly similar to a character in 774's earlier Princess Honoka doujin series, especially with her revised hair color.
  • The Rival: To Nagatoro in judo, but it doesn't seem to be mutual. The worst of it seems to be that in the past, she often cried over constantly losing to her, but she didn't and still doesn't seem to hold it against her personally.
  • Shipper on Deck: She's happy to learn about Nagatoro and Senpai's thing and eggs her on together with Gamo-chan. It's strongly implied that she and Gamo-chan see right through Nagatoro's attempts to deny or deflect this.
  • Skilled, but Naive: She momentarily falls for Gamo-chan's ruse of pretending to forfeit the match before charging, but this turns out to be not even remotely enough to beat Orihara.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Nagatoro quit competitive judo because of her many years ago, due to the fact that Orihara just surpassed her and became a better judoka than Nagatoro, which made Nagatoro think that she herself could never get any better. She is set to appear more often after Nagatoro joins the judo club in her second year.
  • Sore Loser: Downplayed, as she never responded to her losses as seriously as Nagatoro did, but Nagatoro recalls that when they attended the same dojo, she had a tendency to cry whenever she beat her.
  • Unknown Rival: It's heavily implied that she's not aware that her skills led to, or was an excuse for, Nagatoro quitting competitive judo. While she's quite happy to see Nagatoro again, she fails to pick up on Nagatoro's frosty demeanor.
  • Wingding Eyes: Her eyes get starry when really happy/excited during the judo tournament, in contrast to Nagatoro's frowning side-eyes.

    Shikki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shikki_manga_profile.png
One of the strongest members of the Judo Club and one of Nagatoro's former sparring rivals. Resents Nagatoro joining the club due to her history as a "quitter". Eventually, she's promoted to the Judo Club president/team captain by the outgoing one.
  • Accidental Pervert: She ends up having to sneak around naked twice in the volume 16 and 17 extras, causing people to mistake her for an exhibitionist.
  • Anger Born of Worry: She berates Nagatoro for having quit judo, but actually, she's mad at the fact that Nagatoro lost practice and her previously fearsome fighting style suffered as a result.
  • Break Them by Talking: Downplayed, but Senpai manages to make her admit her wrongdoing by simply telling her that she was being unreasonably mean to Nagatoro.
  • Broken Pedestal: It turns out that Shikki was defeated by Nagatoro in the past which made her think highly of Nagatoro's judo skills. Her initial antagonism towards Nagatoro in the present was motivated by the fact that the current Nagatoro didn't live up to her expectations.
  • Bully Hunter: She cannot ignore bullying when she sees it, and always attacks the bullies with judo moves. Unfortunately, she once comes across a bullying incident while having lost her clothes, and from that point on she always needs to perform her bully hunting naked as "Mappa Kamen".
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Rivals the Arts Club President, with Senpai referring to her as the "big girl".
  • A Day in the Limelight: She becomes the recurring protagonist of the volume extras starting with volume 16.
  • Dismissing a Compliment: Tells her friends to stop their flattery as she considers it embarrassing.
  • Elite Four: Her friends call her by this term, "the Shitenno of the Female Judo Club" despite her only being one person. It's likely a pun on her nickname which contains a soundalike for the word for "four" (shi).
  • Full-Frontal Assault: In the volume 17 extras, Shikki fights two bullies while completely nude save for a school bag on her head to hide her identity. She later begins to do this regularly as "Mappa Kamen".
  • Funbag Airbag: People have twice faceplanted into her large bosom, the first being Nagatoro in the volume 11 extras and the second time being her two friends in chapter 108. Both times they reacted by blurting out "airbags".
  • Given Name Reveal: Chapter 126 finally reveals her real surname, which is "Shiki" (ungeminated "k" and a short "i" at the end, written as 志木 in kanji).
  • Jerkass Has a Point: In Chapter 99, she states that she was blunt towards Nagatoro due to the fact that Nagatoro wouldn't have injured herself had she been as soft and flexible as she used to be before quitting. (There is in fact the concept of "soft judo", using more fluid and effective defensive techniques than "hard".) As such, Nagatoro is too stiff when sparring, causing her to injure herself.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Antagonizes Nagatoro by challenging her to a match which results in Nagatoro suffering a wrist injury that needs bandaging if not a cast, and her refraining from judo activities for a few weeks. It seems to be accidental and Nagatoro herself doesn't claim otherwise, but Shikki then takes this as evidence that she wasn't taking the club seriously. However, she soon ends up rethinking her actions and apologizing to Nagatoro after a speech from Senpai. Shikki later reveals that the reason she came to that conclusion was that she believes the old Nagatoro wouldn't have gotten hurt like that.
  • Location Theme Naming: Her surname is taken from Shiki Station in Saitama Prefecture, which follows the railway station theme naming of characters.
  • Naked People Trapped Outside: In the volume 19 extras, she is stuck naked outside when the school buildings are locked up.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Per usual for the series until chapter 126.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Her face seems locked into a frown even when she's embarrassed.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: Although she had her Shameless Fanservice Girl moment with Senpai in the showers, she leans into the reluctant territory in later volumes.
    • In the volume 16 extras, she's alone in an onsen and realizes too late that it's a mixed bath, just as a bunch of guys are about to enter. She exits via a side entrance and tries to sneak back into the changing room without being seen naked, but unfortunately runs into Nagatoro and the other Judo club members on the way.
    • In the volume 17 extras, she loses her clothes as a result of a Satchel Switcheroo and has to sneak around the school naked. When she comes across a bullying situation, she forces herself to intervene and fights the bullies with only a bag on her head to hide her face. She is very embarrassed later when the rumors about a "perverted hero" spread throughout the school.
    • In the volume 18 extras, she comes across another bullying situation, this time while wearing clothes. She is about to interfere, but worries that people might put two and two together and realize she's the same girl who appeared nude last time. In the end, she decides to go become the nude hero once more. Unfortunately, she runs into a crowd of people after leaving the scene, but avoids negative consequences when the people mistake her for a cosplayer.
    • In the volume 19 extras, she is forced to go home naked after the school buildings are locked while she's perfoming her "hero" duties. She manages to avoid being seen by almost anyone... except Yoshi, who happened to be taking her dog out for a walk.
  • The Resenter: She refuses to accept Nagatoro as a worthy fellow club member, despite the latter throwing herself enthusiastically into club activities, because of her quitting competitive judo as a child. She's also annoyed at Orihara for accepting her and thinks she's just soft on Nagatoro due to their history together.
  • Satchel Switcheroo: In the volume 17 extras, the President accidentally takes Shikki's school bag with her after a nude modeling session (the bag containing Shikki's clothes and phone), leaving Shikki naked in the clubroom.
  • Secret Identity: She gains a hero identity called "Mappa Kamen" (meaning "stark naked mask") after defeating some bullies while having to sneak around school nude. Her "outfit" consists of nothing but a school bag worn over her head to hide her face. Naturally, she is very determined to keep people from figuring out who the "perverted" ally of justice really is. But by her logic, she has to keep up the nude hero shtick every time she comes across bullying, because if people see her perfoming the same role in her school uniform, they could connect the dots and her reputation would be ruined.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl:
    • When Senpai is trapped in the same shower stall with her due to Nagatoro mixing up the girls' and boy's sides (despite all their combined efforts to get him out), she just goes ahead and showers in his presence, though they face away from each other, he keeps his towel on while she's completely nude and she remains stone-faced. She also says she doesn't mind showing a boy some skin.
  • Someone's Touching My Butt: In chapter 99, Senpai feels something soft rubbing against him in the shower. It turns out that it's Shikki's ass, and she apologizes for it being too big. Nagatoro demands that she pull her ass back in, to no avail.
  • Younger Than They Look: She has a flashback of facing Nagatoro in a judo match in what seems to be middle/junior high school, as this is when Nagatoro is known by her nickname "Tororoimo", so they could be as young as 12-13 (first years). Yet Shikki is noticeably as buxom already as she is in high school.

    Fujimin and Asaka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shikki_friends_manga_profile.png
Left: Asaka; Right: Fujimin
Two girls who are always hanging around Shikki and acting as her flunkies. The one with shorter hair is known as "Fujimin", and the one with a ponytail is named "Asaka".
  • Girl Posse: For Shikki. They flatter her for her skill and rely on her.
  • Given Name Reveal: Fujimin's real surname, "Fujimiya", is revealed in chapter 136.
  • Gossipy Hens: They badmouth Nagatoro behind her back and sic Shikki on her.
  • In-Series Nickname: Gamo calls them the "Sniffers" due to Fujimin's keen sense of smell.
  • Jerkass: While Shikki has her own personal beef with Nagatoro, Fujimin and Asaka seem to antagonize her just to be mean.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • They catch Senpai peeking excitedly at Nagatoro and call him a gross stalker, especially when he actually runs inside the club's venue to defend her. He is after all not a Female Judo Club member.
    • Fujimin smells a boy (Senpai) inside the girls' showers and she and her friend immediately yell that he's in for it now once they find him, in contrast to Shikki immediately understanding it was an unfortunate mix-up and covertly trying to help him escape, but still he shouldn't be there in the first place.
  • Location Theme Naming: Asaka's surname and Fujimin's nickname are taken from Asaka and Fujimino Stations in Saitama Prefecture, which follows the railway station theme naming of characters.
  • Malicious Misnaming: They call Nagatoro "Tororo", which is how the English "troll" is pronounced phonetically in Japanese. Later subverted when it turns out to be part of her middle school nickname anyway.
  • Morality Chain: Shikki usually keeps them from acting too mean.
  • No Name Given: The one with the ponytail went completely unnamed until chapter 126, which finally revealed her family name to be Asaka.
  • The Nose Knows: Fujimin is rather sensitive to smell. She is able to tell that a boy is in a room by scent alone.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Fujimin" is a nickname, ending with the common nickname suffix ん (-n). She's only known by her nickname from chapter 98 up until chapter 136, which reveals her real surname.
  • Replacement Flat Character: They basically fill the spot of "antagonistic mean girls" briefly held by Nagatoro's friends pre-development.
  • Relationship Sabotage: They're annoyed by how much Nagatoro and Senpai are flirting on a school trip, and try to enact "divine punishment".
  • Sensory Overload: The reason Fujimin quit the kendo club was that the armor stank too much for her heightened sense of smell.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Considering their pettiness and reliance on Shikki, it comes as a surprise when Fujimin is able to easily defeat Gamo in a (toy sword) fight. It turns out that Fujimin used to be in the Kendo club in middle school, and Orihara later comments that Gamo would need to train to have a chance in a rematch.

    Judo Club President
The semi-retired head and team captain of the Female Judo Club.
  • No Name Given: She has eyes but no name yet.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Her appearances always involve overseeing the club members and sparring with them. She's first seen after Nagatoro enters her second year and joins the judo club, making her a third-year. This means she's eyeing college. So during a training camp for an upcoming competition, she says she won't be competing, and handpicks Shikki as her acting successor as team captain/club head.

Kainan Arts Triumvirate

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kainan_arts_triumvirate.png
Left to Right: Machida, Hashimoto, Aihara

The top three students of the Kainan Arts prep school. Also known as the "Kainan Arts Oil Painting Triumvirate".

  • Affectionate Nickname: Machida is known as "Macchi" within tbe group, and so they call Senpai "Hacchi".
  • Elite Four: Their group nickname is upgraded after Senpai becomes the top fourth student, and by this time Senpai has become friendly with them.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Their teacher thinks it's cool to call them a "triumvirate", but they find it embarrassing.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Upon meeting Nagatoro, who's jealously guarding Senpai and thinking that they're bullying him, they deduce that she's his girlfriend; at that point, she might as well be for all intents and purposes, but they're actually yet to become an item.
  • Location Theme Naming: Their surnames are taken from Machida Station, Hashimoto Station, and Aihara Station, which are all on the Yokohama Line from Hachiōji. This follows the railway station theme naming of characters.
  • Mirror Character: To a lesser extent, Machida and the two boys are akin to Senpai and his own two guy friends from high school, since both trios have Those Two Guys in relation to him or her, with contrasting mindsets and behavior between those two and the other.
  • Power Trio: They're friends with each other and form their own group, likely due to being the most skilled students in the prep school.

    Machida
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/machida_manga_profile.png
The most skilled artist in the prep school, Machida is putting her all into passing the university entrance exam after failing to get in last year.
  • The Ace: Within the prep school, Machida is this by virtue of being the top-ranked student, and she's also more serious and hot-blooded than the next two best.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: Machida smokes, which gives her somewhat of a bad girl vibe.
  • Her Own Worst Enemy: It's heavily implied that her competitive nature is what led her to fail to get into university, as she had focused on one-upping the Arts Club President instead of using on a more organic and selfless approach. The latter tells Machida that competitions for arts are battles against oneself (due to the fact that there's a significant aspect of them that is subjective), and that she never considered that she ever won against Machida.
  • Humiliating Wager: After Senpai makes his intention to beat Machida in the mock exam known to her and later inadvertently reveals to her and the boys that Nagatoro has modeled nude for him in the past, Machida takes him up on his challenge, but adds a challenge of her own: if Senpai beats her, she herself will model nude for him; but if she beats Senpai, he will have to model nude for her.
  • Mirror Character:
    • To Orihara, as The Ace girl who Senpai or Nagatoro must surpass to reach their common goal, with neither girl as yet aware of the stakes for Nagatoro and Senpai themselves. Both Orihara and Machida talk about sacrificing/letting go of everything else in pursuit of their own goal, getting an Olympic gold medal and getting into art college respectively. And both of them note that Nagatoro or Senpai "has it good" compared to them for having the option/luxury of having lives outside of their goals, and it's explicit or hinted that they don't want to be beaten by them for that reason. Machida is outwardly way angrier about it than Orihara, as she shouts at the boys for talking about dating and relationship stuff (and for Senpai, having a love life at all) instead of focusing on the college entrance exam, calling them immature. After Senpai tells Machida directly that he plans to beat her in the mock exam (in front of Nagatoro, his reason why), she takes it rather personally, surprising all the boys.
    • Machida is one for Nagatoro in terms of having been surpassed in ability by an opponent that strove to better themselves from below (the Arts Club President and Orihara respectively). As a result, Machida failed to get into university and Nagatoro gave up on judo.
  • Reused Character Design: Played with, as she greatly resembles Shikki's design in facial features, but is daintier overall.
  • Rōnin: She failed to pass her high school entrance exam last year and spent the past year in a prep school. Her becoming a Ronin is one of the reasons she, Hashimoto and Aihara, refer to the Arts Club President as "Shogun".

    Hashimoto and Aihara
The second best students in the prep school after Machida.
  • Dark Horse Victory: Aihara ends up taking first place on the mock exam instead of Machida and Senpai who were competing over their scores. He was previously often third place after Machida and Hashimoto.
  • Reused Character Design: Hashimoto is reminiscent of the unused lanky character design with pronounced eyebags that Nanashi had originally drafted for Senpai, as shown back in the Volume 8 Official Fanbook.
  • Those Two Guys: They don't have much individual characterization.

Every little detail about her... Aren't you interested?
—Nagatoro's sister, Ch. 59

Misaki Nagatoro is Nagatoro's older sister and a college student. Senpai first meets her when he comes over to visit Nagatoro after she gets sick.

Like her siblings, Misaki is also a skilled judoka.

  • Always Someone Better:
    • As Senpai notices from their interactions, she's Nagatoro's "Nagatoro", and it takes her a rather small effort to make her little sister dance on top of her palm.
    • With Taiga, Misaki is an excellent and dominating judoka, to the point that they're miles better than Orihara, the judo club's ace.
  • Big Sister Mentor:
    • To Nagatoro, as she's implied to be a Shipper on Deck for her and Senpai. She's also introduced while taking care of Nagatoro in between university classes.
    • Misaki, alongside Taiga, is asked by Hayase to coach her and her club at judo.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: In Chapter 62, she unceremoniously spills the beans and reveals that her little sister's name is Hayase, right after Senpai and Nagatoro talk about it. The way she bursts in at just the right moment may well imply she'd been eavesdropping.
  • Canon Foreigner: Not in the image sets. Once she appeared, it was unclear if she had replaced the older brother, who had been referenced earlier, or if both exist in the serialization. But the official fanbook restated that Hayase in fact does have both an older brother and older sister.
  • The Confidant: To her little sister, as she's teasingly aware of the happenings between her and Senpai. It's implied by the chapter and her treatment of her little sister that, just like when she met Senpai, she also made fun of her little sister when it came to the saucy shenanigans too. Later Nagatoro seeks her advice about a suitable Christmas gift for him.
  • Cool Big Sis: For little Hayase. It's shown that she encourages her sister to make approaches to Senpai that are more on the affectionate side, especially appealing to winning him over Through His Stomach.
  • Depending on the Artist: The manga shows her as almost as tall as her brother and at least One Head Taller than her little sister, so around as tall as Senpai. The anime and its merchandise art depict her and Hayase as the same height, and shorter than Senpai.
  • First-Name Basis: Justified with her little sister, this being the reason why Senpai learns his junior's name. Nagatoro's sister wouldn't call her by any name other than Hayase.
  • The Gadfly: In contrast to the earlier depiction of Nagatoro's brother as a Straight Man, here It Runs in the Family. She jokes about calling the police on Senpai for trespassing and later teases him about his and Nagatoro's relationship. She also unabashedly tells him that her little sister constantly talks about him at home, even when her little sister herself is present, to the embarrassment of them both. She even goes as far as to act like an Amazingly Embarrassing Parent, trying to show Senpai her sister's childhood pictures and tell him mortifying stories of her like her bet-wetting phase.
  • Hellish Pupils: Similar to her sister at times, her irises are more often than not completely opaque, making her pupils look disturbingly huge. This makes it all the more unnerving when she's being playful, which she often is. In the anime, it's the reverse akin to Yoshi's unshaded/flatly colored eyes, as the irises only become opaque and/or extra large for certain reaction shots.
  • It Runs in the Family: Besides the teasing habits, she's revealed to also take an interest in martial arts like her brother and little sister. She's shown sparring at the same time as her brother with their own opponents.
  • Leg Focus: Akin to what her sister gets at times when she herself gets a "demoness" form, her bare legs are in focus more than her cleavage.
  • Loving Bully: Though she's an example of The Gadfly, she mostly teases her little sister and Senpai by being affectionate and coy.
  • Moment Killer: She bursts into Nagatoro's room to offer more snacks and drinks just as Nagatoro is giving Senpai a spoonful of her pudding. This makes a red-faced Nagatoro scream at her to get out, while she's thoroughly amused at the sight of them. Later, Senpai gives a subtext-littered promise to one day ask Nagatoro her first name, only for her sister to burst in and unceremoniously reveal it while waving the family photo album around.
  • Morality Pet: She's delighted at the fact that her little sister has a boy she likes, so she advises her to tone down the mischief and appeal to affectionate gestures towards him.
  • Nice Girl: Played with. Though part of her mushy attitude towards her sister is mostly there to amuse herself, it's shown that she wants her sister to experience the sweeter side of being in love, rather than spoiling the whole thing by overstepping by trolling.
  • No Name Given: She does not give her name when in her first appearance. Senpai privately dubs her "Big-Sis-toro" ("Anetoro"). In Chapter 118, her name is eventually revealed to be Misaki.
  • Second-Hand Storytelling: Implied Trope. Considering that she playfully chides Senpai on the "perverted stuff" he does with her little sister, it's hinted that Nagatoro has tried to paint him as a pervert, only for her big sister to find it obvious that it was Nagatoro who started the teasing to begin with every time. Of course, big sis finds this endlessly amusing from them.
  • Shipper on Deck: She reveals that she's Nagatoro's confidant of sorts and offers to tell Senpai more about Nagatoro if he wants. Later she gives her advice about what to give him for Christmas (something useful = a scarf). Still later, when the two are making bento for each other, she convinces her to just try and make him happy instead of using it to tease and prank him (with surprise spicy food, which he even predicted was going to happen) since that would be more satisfying for her as well.
  • Supreme Chef: The first time she's introduced, she whips up a very appetizing dessert platter based on pudding on the fly. Another instance has her helping her younger sister make a new bento after the meat latter was cooking got burnt, even reworking what’s left of the burnt meat into another dish.
  • Vague Age: It's unclear how old she is, and for quite a while it was also unclear whether she or their brother was the oldest sibling. Since Anetoro is a college student, that makes her at least 18 when she first appears and at least 19 after the main cast has moved up a year, by Japanese law. Like her brother, she doesn't wear school uniform unlike the main cast, so both of them can't be in high school anymore. In Hayase's fan book profile where her family members are listed, she comes between her brother and Hayase, but their father is also listed before their mother so this may not imply anything about their ages.
    • Eventually she was confirmed as the oldest child since she and her brother were specifically called "ane" (姉) and "otouto" (弟), meaning older sister and younger brother. However, the age gap between them is still unclear.

    Nagatoro's brother / Anitoro

Nagatoro: Ah, Senpai. This guy is... (...)
Taiga: Hey hey. (...) Don't "this guy" me, Hayase-chan~
Nagatoro: Wha- Chan...!?
—From Chapter 94

In the serialization, he is named Taiga Nagatoro. When Senpai encounters him with Nagatoro on the street, he mistakes Taiga to be an ex-boyfriend of hers. Just like his sisters, Taiga is a markedly skilled judoka.
In the Pixiv sets, he is named Ichiro. In one of the early Pixiv sets, Nagatoro claims he is her real boyfriend to Senpai's despair.

Tropes that apply to the serialization:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ichiro.png
Manga
  • Adaptation Personality Change: In the early Pixiv sets, he was a Straight Man. In the serialization, he's just as much The Gadfly as his sisters. For example, he cuts Nagatoro off when she tries to introduce him as her brother, using her first name (and adding -chan to boot). He also physically resembles his little sister more than in the original.
  • Always Someone Better: Nagatoro is no match for his teasing, similar to their sister. He's also among those who first taught Nagatoro how to fight. And later their sister is also revealed to be skilled in martial arts.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: He's introduced wearing his hair up in a ponytail, but later lets it down and it's around shoulder-length like his older sister's, and when the two of them get "archdemon" forms it adds to his shirtless barbarian-esque look compared to his sister who looks more like a succubus like the younger girls' demoness forms.
  • Big Brother Bully: Goads Nagatoro into trying to hit him, then effortlessly dodges her strikes before flicking her forehead.
  • Big Brother Mentor: It's stated that he's the one who taught Nagatoro martial arts, and he's very open about coaching both her and her clubmates.
  • Foreshadowing: His familial relationship to Nagatoro is hinted at with his smirk resembling Nagatoro's bullying face, and him also pulling off the noodly arms.
  • The Gadfly: Like his sisters, he comes off as this. He quickly cottons on that Senpai is jealous of him and that Nagatoro is protective of Senpai, and milks it for all it's worth.
  • The Ghost: Though Nagatoro mentions him a few times early on, he remains unseen for most of the series. When she invites Senpai over to her house after they get soaked in the rain, she gives him one of her brother's shirts to wear, and they play video games in his room. Later she gives Senpai a haircut, saying that she's done the same for her brother.
    • Finally averted in Chapter 93, when Senpai encounters him.
  • It Runs in the Family: He mirrors his sisters in both teasing and martial arts.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: For those familiar with the original Pixiv sets, his appearance in the manga had been telegraphed for the good part of a decade.
  • The Man Behind the Man: It's implied that he's partly responsible for his little sister's tomboyishness, as he taught her to fight.
  • Mistaken for Romance: He quickly realizes that Senpai is thinking this and gleefully twists the knife by mentioning Nagatoro's sleeping habits, naturally causing Senpai to think they've slept together.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Downplayed. He's reasonably impressed that Senpai steps between him and Nagatoro in an attempt to protect her, and is amused by Senpai's passionate argument that he at least knows what makes Nagatoro happy. That said, he doesn't particularly like the idea of the two going to a mixed-gender bath together and makes it clear that any "shameful conduct" between the two will be met with swift vengeance.
  • No Name Given: His name isn't given in his first appearance since he cuts Nagatoro off when she tries to introduce him. Eventually, in Chapter 118 his name is revealed to be Taiga.
  • Oblivious to Love: It's implied that he may be unaware that Gamo-chan, whom he often spars with at her gym, likes him (or at least that he's her type).
  • Punny Name: His name sounds like "tiger", which goes along with Nagatoro's cat motifs, and when he and his elder sister get imaginary "demonic" forms like their baby sister, he wears a cat skull brooch.
  • Shipper on Deck: He smiles warmly when he watches how Nagatoro and Senpai interact.
  • Shirtless Scene: He's revealed to have an impressive torso after some judo sparring leaves his judogi open, and his "demon" form is bare-chested except for some leather straps.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He taught Hayase how to fight, which happens to be one of the things Senpai likes the most about her, this also the factor that led to her opening up about her personal life with Senpai.
  • Stealth Mentor: Of sorts. He keeps goading Senpai by implying he's physically intimate with Nagatoro and teasing her until she tries punching him, but he stops once Senpai actually speaks up to defend himself and Nagatoro, apparently satisfied that Senpai has a spine.
  • Vague Age: It's unclear how old he is, and for quite a while it was also unclear whether he or his other sister is the oldest sibling. Since Anetoro is a college student, that makes her at least 18 when she first appears, by Japanese law. Like her, he doesn't wear a school uniform unlike the main cast, and by this time they've moved up a year, so he can't be in high school anymore like her. If he is Anetoro's age or older, it may or may not affect his being mistaken as Hayase's boyfriend since she is 15 at the start of the series and 16 by the time he appears. He comes before Anetoro in Hayase's fan book profile where her family members are listed, but their father is also listed before their mother so this may not imply anything about their ages.
    • Eventually he was confirmed as the middle child since Anetoro and he were specifically called "ane" (姉) and "otouto" (弟), meaning older sister and younger brother. However, the age gap between them is still unclear.

Tropes that apply to the original Pixiv sets:

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nagatoro_ichiro.png
Original Pixiv Sets
  • Locked Out of the Loop: He's roped into Nagatoro's scheme by simply picking her up at school at her request, and he seems to be mostly clueless about how sadistic his little sister can be, only aware that she's "a little weird".
  • Mistaken for Romance: Enforced by Nagatoro, who also shows Senpai a cellphone picture of them being affectionate.
  • Meaningful Name: His name can mean "firstborn son".
  • Shipper on Deck: Upon being formally introduced to Senpai, he tells him to take care of Nagatoro. Justified since the two are explicitly going out in this version.
  • Spell My Name With An S: "Ichiro" could also be spelled "Ichirou" or "Ichirō".
  • Straight Man: Seems to be a normal guy.

Two boys who are currently third-year students like Senpai. They are also among the unpopular geeks at school. The taller one is called "Takao-kun", and the shorter one is "Hino-kun".
  • Affectionate Nickname: They refer to Senpai as Nao-kun.
  • Energetic and Soft-Spoken Duo: Takao is energetic, and the other friend is soft-spoken.
  • Faceless Masses: A faceless guy with Takao's hairstyle first shows up in chapter 36 as the person Senpai originally planned to draw for his festival portraits, who bails on him. He was Adapted Out of the anime which just goes straight to Senpai pondering his next move. If he's meant to be the same boy, it's nevertheless a shock when he and the other boy suddenly appear in chapter 74 with faces.
  • Hypocrite: Hino seems a bit jealous that a shy dork like Senpai has become the target of a pretty girl, even calling it openly a waste, but judging by his own reactions in front of the clique, it's unlikely Hino would do better himself in his place.
  • Location Theme Naming: Their surnames are taken from Takao Station and Hino Station in Tokyo, which follows the railway station theme naming of characters.
  • No Name Given: They go unnamed in their first few appearances over the course of about 30 chapters. Subverted later when their names are casually dropped in conversation (Takao in chapter 101, Hino in chapter 105).
  • Proud to Be a Geek: To a degree, as they make fun of Senpai when he acts like a "normie".
  • Remember the New Guy?: The manga barely skirts this due to the above faceless guy showing up earlier, thus showing that Senpai does have at least one friend, but still they show up with fully defined faces all of a sudden. And their proper introduction in the anime in season 2 squarely falls into this, since season 1 had cut out the relevant scene where they were foreshadowed (or could have been introduced, since they appeared in the manga before the anime began) and implied he's friendless even more than the manga had.
  • Shipper on Deck: Unlike Hino, Takao is quite vocally enthusiastic about Senpai and Nagatoro getting together, although he's still open to teasing Senpai about it.
  • Those Two Guys: They mainly appear when Senpai needs someone to talk to and comment on his relationship with Nagatoro and her friends.
  • Tareme Eyes: Hino has big and expressive eyes, as well as a gentler disposition than Takao, despite being ironically less supportive of Senpai.

    Nekoba and Rabi-chan

Left: Nekoba; Right: Rabi-chan
Manga
Nekoba – Voiced by: Shion Wakayama (Japanese), Amber Connor (English), Paola García (Latin American Spanish)
Rabi-chan – Voiced by: Hikaru Tōno (Japanese), Kayli Mills (English), Amelialli Guevara (Latin American Spanish)

Nekoba and Rabi-chan are two of Nagatoro's other friends and classmates. They're very given to discussing boys and love.

  • All There in the Manual: Nekoba has yet to be named in the main chapters themselves, unlike Rabi-chan (in their first appearance, by Nekoba herself), and she's first named by the Official Fanbook.
  • Alone Among the Couples: Nekoba is in the boyless group eyeing Rabi-chan, Sakura, and their boyfriends with envy and annoyance on Christmas Eve. She also notices that Nagatoro and "her man" are seated on the boyless side, causing the two to make excuses and flee.
  • Childhood Friends: Nekoba and her nerdy new boyfriend in Chapter 104, who apparently has been courting her since middle school.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Nekoba's fangs add to her cat-like appearance, fitting her nickname ("neko" means "cat" in Japanese).
  • Fangirl: Nekoba is noted to like reliable boys like a popular idol she follows named Yuuki.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Rabi-chan.
  • Moment Killer: During one of their girly love talks, Nekoba unwittingly makes Nagatoro recoil from admitting (just through a show of hands) that 1.) she already considers herself as having a boyfriend, and 2.) that she's in love - just by talking excitedly about her own love life. Gamo-chan and Yoshi notice it but she and Rabi-chan don't.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Rabi-chan" is almost certainly a nickname, given the honorific. "Nekoba" may be as well, but could be a surname.
  • Punny Name: Nekoba has "neko" (cat) in her name and she often has a cat smile.
  • Shipper on Deck: Both, of Nagatoro with Senpai and Gamo-chan with Nagatoro's brother.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: Rabi-chan apparently has an overachieving, cocky and handsome boyfriend from the school's basketball team that dotes on her. She's more than delighted about this. We see them together on Christmas Eve.
  • Those Two Guys: They're almost always shown together.
  • Tareme Eyes: Rabi-chan, as indicative of her calmer nature compared to Nekoba.
  • Tsurime Eyes: Nekoba, being the more teasing of the two.
  • Uncovering Relationship Status: The chapters where they are featured almost always consist of them engaging in girly love talk with the other girls.

    Public Morals Committee Chair

This is too immoral!
—Public Morals Committee Chair, Ch. 46

A short girl with a bob cut who heads the Public Morals Committee of the student council.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Has one in her second appearance.
  • Deus ex Machina: She and the committee basically come out of nowhere to disqualify the Arts Club President's painting for being too erotic, leading to the contest between her and Senpai to be a sort of "Shaggy Dog" Story. While their presence was a bit foreshadowed because the previous painting was said to be allowed, none of the characters expected the contest to end that way. Perhaps to rectify this a bit, the anime made her appear earlier, making her a Chekhov's Gunman.
  • Faceless Masses: Has no facial features in her first appearance, but does in her second, which might indicate she'll be recurring in the future. Or not. Since she's most likely a third-year, she presumably graduated along with the President. In the anime, she remains faceless.
  • Moral Guardians: Serves as this for the students.
  • No Name Given: No title is expressly given either, but she seems to be the one in charge so it's inferred. Confirmed as such in the Official Fanbook.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She has only appeared at the end and the start of two chapters, but it's for the resolution to one of the story arcs.

From now on, you'll have to listen to everything I say...
—Ai Mashiro, Ch. 54

The main character of a manga Nagatoro and Senpai read. She's the secretary of the student council who is bullied by the Student Council President until she turns the tables on him.
  • Blackmail: She snaps a photo of the President cheating during a test and uses it to gain leverage over him.
  • invokedDevelopment Gag: She's shown kicking the President while he stands and takes it, a nod of sorts to the more hardcore Nagatoro material before the manga started.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Is roughly treated by the President until she blackmails him and becomes even more sadistic than he ever was.
  • Expy: In-universe, of Nagatoro herself (or more precisely, of the Nagatoro in the original Pixiv sets). In design, she looks like the Morals Committee Chair.
  • Reused Character Design: She is nigh-identical to the Morals Committee girl, and both of them look very similar to other characters from the author's earlier works. Downplayed in the anime by giving her and the committee girl different hair colors.
  • Show Within a Show: Revealed to be in a manga called Love Slave, which both Nagatoro and Senpai read. It's not lost on them that the manga parallels their own situation to an extent. This also makes her name a Punny Name since ai means "love".

Alternative Title(s): Ijiranaide Nagatoro San
