The Occult Research Club

Formed by Rias Gremory during her first year at Kuoh Academy, the Occult Research Club is the extracurricular club that our heroes are a part of. Despite the club's name, very little actual research is actually done; after all, the members are not (or in some cases, no longer) human. The club is really just a front for Rias, her "family," and later, other supernatural beings, and it provides cover for their operations; namely dealing with paranormal activity and destroying hostile supernatural beings. The members often use the club as an excuse to get out of any classes they might be in at the moment when an emergency pops up, and the old schoolhouse in which they meet is secluded enough to prevent scrutiny from normal human students.
    In General
  • A Day in the Limelight: A member of the club is usually the focal point depending on the volume.
    • Volume 1: Issei and Asia's introductions into the devil world.
    • Volume 2: Rias's love life.
    • Volume 3: Kiba's tragic past with the holy sword experiment.
    • Volume 4: Gasper's introduction.
    • Volume 5: Koneko training to control her senjutsu powers.
    • Volume 6: Asia's background with Diodora Astaroth
    • Volume 7: Akeno's strained relation with her father.
    • Volume 10: Issei dealing with Raynare's "curse".
    • Volume 12: Kiba protecting the Club after Issei's departure.
    • Volume 14: Ravel dealing with the Phenex-tear black market.
    • Volume 16: Gasper's life in the Romanian vampire society.
    • Volume 17: Rossweisse's study of 666.
    • Volume 18: Irina's childhood with Issei.
    • Volume 19: Xenovia's work with the student council.
    • Volume 20: Issei and his relationship with his parents.
  • All Women Are Lustful: All the girls want Issei's attention, including in more sexual manners.
  • Almighty Janitor: Everyone in the Club, except Rias and Azazel, are low-ranked devils. Rias is currently one of the weaker members of the Club. You do the math. Even after Issei, Akeno, and Kiba's promotion, it's implied they are still not promoted to a level which would indicate their strength. Justified by Sirzechs, since he believes they're far from ready to handle the responsibilities and pressures of a high-ranked devil.
  • Badass Crew: Hell yeah!
  • Badass Family: What Rias regards her club as, with her as the "mother" that holds it together.
  • Battle Harem: Even if you include Kiba and Gasper. It gets lampshaded by the author himself at one point.
  • Betty and Veronica: Within the club, we have Asia as the Betty and Rias, Xenovia, and Akeno as the Veronicas for Issei's Archie. Irina, being Issei's Childhood Friend, also acts as a possible Cheryl.
  • Break the Cutie: Almost all the members of Issei's harem after his "death", showing how psychologically dependent they are on him due to his help in overcoming their respective Dark and Troubled Past. Fortunately subverted after he comes back to life with some draconic backup.
  • Buxom Is Better: In the future, all of the girls (possibly including Ophis) have them to the point that their children thought at first that women should have large chests. Yes, even Koneko, Le Fay and Asia.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Most of them are devils. They're also the heroes of the story.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Almost every single member of the club has or had issues that needed resolving.
  • End of an Age: By the time Volume 22 rolls around, Rias and Akeno have graduated from Kuoh Academy and Xenovia becomes the Student Council President.
  • Five-Man Band: Their original setup.
  • Gender Bender: In one Volume 13 short story, the group (minus Issei) underwent a gender change via Azazel's gender-swapping raygun.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.: Everyone's reaction after Issei's (temporary) death. Rias locks herself up in her room, embracing Issei's Evil Pieces, Akeno sits nigh-lifeless on the sofa, Asia and Ravel are openly crying their eyes out (with Asia contemplating suicide and only talking herself out of it because Issei wouldn't like her to join him "that way"), Koneko tries to keep her composure only to also break down crying, and Kiba has to hold back his tears while having to attend to Ruval and Riser, who offer their sympathies to the team, and later Baraqiel, who comes to comfort Akeno. Only Irina, Xenovia and Rossweisse are not immediately in the know, and Gasper is deliberately left in the dark because it'd be too traumatic for him and when he does learn, he doesn't take it well, but not in the way Georg expected.
  • Involuntary Group Split:
    • Zigzagged. After Issei's promotion into a High-Class Devil in Volume 22, Rias trades Asia, Xenovia and Rossweisse into his peerage and Ravel is traded into his peerage by Lady Phenex. Due to Issei being Rias's pawn and Ravel being a member of the Occult Research Club, they haven't truly split though.
    • In Volume 19, Xenovia has to leave the Occult Research Club due to becoming the new Student Council President. In Volume 18, Rias names Asia and Kiba the new president and vice-president due to her and Akeno's upcoming graduation from Kuoh's high school division, officially doing so during Volume 22.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Of the core group Rias, Akeno and Asia have long hair and are very feminine (in different mode) while Koneko and Xenovia are more Tomboy.
  • Non-Indicative Name: They don't do any occult research.
  • Moment Killer: Everyone in Issei's harem is this to the others. It can count as a meta-example as well as this is Ishibumi's way of cooperating with the Can't Have Sex, Ever clause in writing this story.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: They don't actually do any occult research, the club is merely a front.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: They did win the Rating Game against the Student Council, but lost a lot of members to pull it off, and their ratings were lowered as a result.
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: They have a devil princess, a modified human, a miko and human/fallen angel hybrid, three very ditzy believers of God, a nekomata, a crossdressing vampire, a mad scientist fallen angel, a money-loving valkyrie, a demon phoenix, and finally a very perverted high school boy-turned-demon.
  • Run or Die: The girls are told by Ddraig to run away from Issei's wrath against Shalba or they'll die with him.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: The girls toward Issei for one reason or another. Rias sees all men as the same, Akeno hates men, Asia was too innocent to find interest in the opposite sex, Irina and Xenovia were both raised in the church, Koneko dislikes perverted things. However, they enjoy Issei and all love him to the point they can't live without him.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: The girls keep falling in love with Issei despite his perverted nature because he is a good guy at heart who will literally go through hell to protect them.
  • Spanner in the Works: Had Rias not reincarnated Issei Hyoudou after Raynare's killing, then Issei wouldn't have had to rescue Asia and battled Riser to stop his engagement with Rias. Had none of those recruitments after Issei happened, they wouldn't have formed an alliance with the Three Factions. Not to mention Xenovia never would've realized that God Is Dead, or Irina would never have reunited with Issei, or Akeno wouldn't have reconciled with Baraqiel, and so forth.
  • Supporting Harem: All the girls love Issei and while Issei cares about all of them, it's very clear Rias is his number 1. This takes a strange twist as the other girls are well aware of this and not only do they not mind, but they support it. Not that it stops them from pursuing Issei... with Rias's blessing.
  • Switching P.O.V.: The story is usually told through Issei's perspective, though at certain points we see the story through other characters' eyes, namely, Rias, Kiba (secondary narration if there's something going on with Issei), Azazel (when there's a discussion with the leaders involved), Asia for a brief period, and Irina in one of the short stories.
  • The Team: Their current setup.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Throughout the series, as time goes on everyone in the Occult Research Club starts actively grinding levels in badass, especially Issei and Kiba.
  • True Companions: Despite all the girls wanting to be with Issei, they still trust and help each other no matter what happen.
  • Undying Loyalty: To each other. Even from beyond the grave.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: During the Rating Games the Club showed a lack of experience, hence they often don't do so well. This is best exemplified in their match against Sona's group, which almost spelled defeat for them.
  • Unwitting Pawn: They become one for Vali in Volume 7 seeing as the latter wanted Fenrir on his side, thereby fighting alongside them.
  • What Does She See in Him?: With a bunch of really hot babes being head-over-heels for a Lovable Sex Maniac that most girls would typically avoid, this was inevitable.

Role: Pawn (×8)
Species: Human / Reincarnated Devil / Humanoid Dragon
Voiced by: Yuuki Kaji (Japanese), Scott Freeman (2013-14), Josh Grelle (2015-present) (English)

I'm going to become a Harem king!

A high school student at Kuoh Academy, Issei is a Lovable Sex Maniac. During his first date with Yuma Amano, it ends badly when Yuma reveals herself as Raynare and kills him, but not before wishing to die in the arms of a beautiful woman — a wish so powerful Rias Gremory gets to answer his call and resurrect him as a devil. He dreams of being a harem king, unknowingly already in the middle of being one.

  • Above the Influence: The specific reason Issei is a Chivalrous Pervert and not a dangerous sleaze. He's utterly shameless in ogling girls, gushing about their breasts and repeatedly states his desire for a harem, but he'd never force himself on someone or take advantage of moments of weakness. Riser Phenex pisses him off beyond all comprehension within seconds of their first meeting specifically because he has the harem Issei wants but treats them in general - and Rias in particular - as objects to use and abuse, as opposed to the infinitely selfless(if equally perverse) adoration Issei has for women.
    • When Rias comes to him begging him to take her virginity, it takes quite a while for him to get started because he can tell she's acting out of some unknown desperation. Only when she starts showing actual enjoyment at his attentions does he give in. Unfortunately for Issei, his hesitation results in Interrupted Intimacy.
    • When Asia offers to indulge in "Skinship", he's unable to accept because he can tell that she doesn't quite grasp that Issei desperately wants to hit a home run. Informed consent is really important to him.
    • When a despairing Akeno came to him naked and sad, wanting to have sex with him due to her depressing memories of her past and her father Issei refuses despite wanting to have sex with her, as he wouldn't do it with someone who was in such a depressing state. He doesn't want it unless he thinks the girl will enjoy it too.
  • A Boy and His X: A boy and his dragon partner who's sealed in his left arm to be exact.
  • Achilles' Heel: Notable in that he's got twice the number of weaknesses because he's both a dragon and a devil.
  • Action Hero: With a little push from Azazel, he strives for peacenote  by beating the crap out of anyone who interferes with it.
  • Adorkable: A trait that keeps his harem growing.
  • Adult Fear: When he finds out that Koneko, Gasper and Ravel were kidnapped by magicians after they tried protecting an innocent human.
  • Afraid of Needles: One side story has him catch two viruses, one afflicting Devils and another afflicting Dragons, that requires an injection to fix. To be fair, the needle was as large as Issei, and that’s not even getting into the injection site...
  • Almighty Janitor: In the first season of the anime anyway. He's considered fairly weak compared to the other characters, as he's only a pawn in chess terminology. That said, he can also acquire the powers of the other chess pieces, and due to his Sacred Gear, once he starts training and mastering its use, he becomes quite deadly.
  • Animated Armor: When his body is destroyed by Samael's curse, Ddraig manages to attach his soul to the Scale Mail until Great Red and Ophis create a new body. After all, how could he enjoy intimacy without proper flesh?
  • The Apprentice: He serves as Rias's apprentice at the beginning of the series when she revives him as a devil.
  • Ascended Fanboy: He's a fan of Super Sentai shows alongside Irina, and he finally stars in the "Oppai Dragon" show. He's conflicted, however, between elation and embarrassment over the title, though kids do love it.
  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: Twice. He is a human reincarnated a devil, and starting with Volume 12, he's got both Great Red and Ophis's existence within him.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: Invoked and implied in Vol. 24 when Azazel discussed with the Four Underworld Lords to give Issei his own title, Satan (as in the particular title, not the leaders as a collective). Also a case of Fridge Brilliance here, since Issei has a new body from Great Red, which is the in-universe form of Satan, he becomes the natural choice for the position.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Took a look at Sirzechs's way of bending his Power of Destruction to hit a specific target, and practiced till he was able to pull it off.
  • Babies Ever After: It's a Foregone Conclusion that he will end up with more than twenty children.
  • Back from the Dead: Twice!
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Frequently with Kiba, once with the whole crew.
  • Badass and Child Duo: When he and Kunou were the only ones who got together when everyone got separated at Kyoto.
  • Badass Boast:
"President Rias Gremory's virginity belongs to me!!" (During Riser and Rias's engagement party)
"If you want to burn me, bring me a phoenix or a dragon!" (While fighting a fire mage)
  • Badass Bystander: He had nothing to do with the situation in Kyoto, until his little friends mom was taken...
  • Badass Creed: Gains this after getting Crimson Queen mode instead of Juggernaut Drive, and is fighting off the original version's creed while chanting it.
"I, who is about to awaken, am the Red Dragon Emperor who has discarded the principles of ambition. I walk the road of righteousness by having infinite hopes and dreams. I shall become the King of Crimson Dragon. And I promise you all! I shall show you the future that shines in true crimson light!"
    • The one that is created by Ophis for Dragon ∞ Drive's first use against Rizevim and Belial in vol 20 might just top that.
"The Crimson Red Dragon dwelling within me, awaken from your dominance, The Crimson Heavenly Dragon I possess within me, rise up to become a King. The jet-black God of Infinity, The glorious Red God of Dreams. Watch over the forbidden existence we shall become that transcends the boundaries, We shall dance like radiance within the inferno!"
  • Badass Fingersnap: When unleashing Dress Break.
  • Badass in Charge: He'll temporarily step in as leader for Rias/Akeno if they aren't there, and proves fairly effective at it as well.
  • Badass Nickname: Sekiryuutei (lit. Red Dragon Emperor).
  • Badass Pacifist: Would prefer talking rather than beating up his enemies. And that includes the past users of Boosted Gear.
  • Badass Unintentional: He just wants a harem and not to fight at all. Doesn't stop him from being one.
  • Bathtub Bonding: Once his harem becomes official, this is one of his favorite things to do with his girls, and none of them mind, with the sole exception of Koneko.
    • In Volume 17, Issei baths with all the girls and implies that this is a regular occasion for him and the girls with exception of Rossweisse.
  • Battle Couple: He eventually hooks up with Rias.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Past users of Boosted Gear wanted him to use Juggernaut Drive again. He only gets saved thanks to the power of the children and Irina cheering for him, Sairaorg's encouragement, and one of the past users of Albion, whose consciousness resided in a fragment he absorbed from Vali.
  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: Used Samael's poison from his body when he fought Shalba, infused it with a bullet of Gogmagog he found at the Dimension Gap alongside Ophis and Great Red, and used it against Cao Cao.
  • Berserk Button: He has four:
    • Don't be a Bad Boss to girls who should be your allies or he will smash you to the ground. Riser found this out the hard way.
    • As is typical with a Friend to All Children, harming a child in front of him tends to tick him off.
    • Don't take your panties off before your bra while you are stripping to negate his Dress Break, or he will be prepared to blast you into kingdom come.
    • Diminish the sex appeal of his love interests and his response is a finishing move.
  • Berserker Tears: Beats the living daylights out of Raynare as tears stream down his face.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a pretty nice fellow most of the time, but if you push him over the edge... Well, goodnight.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's very protective of Gasper, Koneko and Asia.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Mainly to Gasper as he teaches the kid on how to take a level in badass. Also to Millicas as well.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • At the end of Volume 2, Issei interferes with Riser's engagement party to rescue Rias.
    • He also shows up Back from the Dead with Great Red and Ophis accompanying him.
  • Bishōnen: After extensive amounts of Art Evolution, he's become one. Coincides with his Character Development as well.
  • Blessed with Suck: A minor example. His power worth eight pawns is a fantastic blessing in most circumstances, but in Ratings Games, where being measured in pawns actually matters, it puts Rias's side at a serious manpower disadvantage.
  • Blood Knight: Shiva points out to Issei that in his pursuit of strength over the past year, he's become one of these, to the point of loving defeating a Worthy Opponent as much as groping a girls' breasts. Upon reflection, Issei can't bring himself to disagree.
  • Book Dumb: Downplayed; his grades are decidedly average compared to the other club members, with even Cloud Cuckoo Lander Xenovia’s worst grade, Japanese, being as high as Issei’s best grade, despite Issei being the actual native Japanese. He also often needs to have non—Japanese mythologies explained to him.
  • Boom, Headshot: Achieves this in his second fight against Cao Cao, who lost his eye after that.
  • Boring Yet Practical: Boosted Gear's basic ability is to double his power endlessly. Exceedingly simple, yet said to be capable of defeating a god with the proper buildup. During his Curb-Stomp Battle against Diodora, the latter manages to hold him off with a barrier, mocking him as nothing but a power idiot. Issei agrees to the label, boosts up some more, and smashes through the barrier like nothing.
  • Break the Cutie: His Yuma/Raynare experience — it took several volumes for him to recover fully.
  • Break the Haughty: Unintentionally played straight. Being an Almighty Janitor, many of his foes are officially out of his league, thus they can't comprehend that they're losing to such a "low-class Devil".
  • Breath Weapon: He learns how to breathe fire after training with Tannin
  • Brought Down to Badass: Thanks to Ddraig sleeping, he can't access his Balance Breaker state and is back to where he was before. Does this stop him from kicking ass? Hell no.
  • Bullying a Dragon: He tends to pick fights with opponents way above his level. Quite a few went badly for him, such as picking a fight with Riser during the Rating Game and Kokabiel.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Doesn't remember the shadow-user Elite Mook that he fought at the warehouse when they meet again at Kyoto.
  • Butt-Monkey: Even when he's thrown some bones, he's often at the receiving end of the slapstick, usually by either Koneko's Pervert Revenge Mode, the numerous girls in Kuoh Academy, or Azazel's crazy inventions.
  • Call-Back: How he defeats Cao Cao is the same way as to how he defeats Riser: not by pure power, but by being Crazy-Prepared and some Indy Ploy mixed in.
  • Came Back Strong: Ohh yes. He was rebuilt with the flesh of Ophis and Great Red in Volume 12. And what does he do once he returns to the living world? He shows off his newfound strength by growing gigantic with the help of Great Red and decimating the Khaos Brigade without so much of breaking a sweat. Subverted as admittedly it was a one-time use power, and Issei's own abilities were stated to only be somewhat stronger than before (with the caveat that how he could develop in the future was unknown).
  • The Champion: For Rias, he'll do anything.
  • Character Development: Compare Issei from Volume 1 to the current Issei; he's grown a lot in a few months. Best shown when he wholeheartedly entrusts Rias to Kiba's care during their trip to Romania. If this was the old Issei, he'd be jealous of Kiba.
    • Another sign is that at the beginning, Issei thought the purpose of a Peerage is to have his own harem. But he learn later on is that the Peerage is meant for support and battle, and start taking his future and Peerage seriously as he want a team that doesn't shame Rias or her family. Some people point out that Issei perverted thinking has toned down a bit as he matured and knows what is important during battles.
  • Chest Blaster: What Longinus Smasher's true form looks like.
  • Chick Magnet: He's got (in order of who liked him first) Asia, Rias, Akeno, Koneko, Xenovia, Irina, Ravel, Rossweisse and Ophis. That's not counting the many admirers he has, much less the guys who want him. According to Ddraig, dragons are Chick Magnets.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: As much as he wants to make any moves, he just can't touch Rias because she's too good for someone as lowly as him, and Asia because she's too pure to corrupt easily. Oh, and God help you if you hurt his harem in any way.
  • Clothing Damage: His Dress Break strips off the target's clothing.
  • Clueless Chick Magnet: As much as he's perverted, he doesn't catch the fact that all of the girls in the club love him. Justified, due to his recurring trauma from Yuma/Raynare's betrayal.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He'll find a way to beat you no matter what it takes. Dress Break plus a Dragon Blast for girls busy covering themselves, and being Crazy-Prepared with Indy Ploy tactics for boys. If you're weaker than him however, well...
  • Combination Attack: Due to his Gift powers, he's able to amplify his ally's attacks and launch a more powerful version. To wit, he pulled off a Field of Blades with Kiba, amplified Power of Destruction with Rias, amplified Akeno's Holy Lightning and his personal favorite with Gasper: Dress Break during a time freeze.
  • Cool Sword: Gains the Holy Sword Ascalon after Michael gives it to him as a gift.
  • Cool Ship: The Skithblathnir (later named Ryuuteimaru). It's currently in its toy form, but according to MacGregor, it can transform into a giant airship. Or a flying harem palace. This will also depend on Issei's aura.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: Most of his powers are this, for instance one can cause Defeat by Modesty while another is a form of telepathy allowing him to have foreknowledge of his opponents' plans.
  • Crazy-Prepared: His fight with Riser at the engagement party and his fourth battle against Cao Cao. Hell, any of his fights that involve this trope tend to be a lot more interesting and awesome than others.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's usually thinking about perverted things, but when push comes to shove...
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In the beginning, he's the receiver of this. Then he started training and now, he's delivering all the curb stomps to weaker devils. Just ask Diodora or Shalba.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Raynare's betrayal led to his disillusionment with love for the first nine volumes, as well as Fallen Angels in general.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Longinus Smasher. It's powerful enough to put Power of Destruction to shame. As in capable of destroying the Underworld at full power. It also requires Issei to be under Juggernaut Drive, which can prove fatal unless fully mastered. Merging with Great Red allows him to use it without side effects, though Ishibumi claims this is just a one-off ability. Ddraig later notes that it is an ability he is not supposed to have, hinting it was sealed away by God.
    • Later, he learns how to use his Wyverns to build up power externally then transfer it to him so that he can use Longinus Smasher, but it's raw destructive power and huge stamina consumption still limits its use.
    • Diabolus Dragon is the ultimate expression of this. The first time he uses it results in shutting down several major organs, requiring mechanical life support, and the second time may well have been fatal if Ophis didn't nerf him afterwards.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Delivers this to Gasper when he held the Distress Ball in Volume 4.
Issei: "However, Gasper! It's no use if you don't get up on your own, you know? After receiving encouragement by a girl, next is standing up! Don't you have a wonderful pair of balls on you!?"
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He treats his Freudian Excuse like it was one of these. It's actually hilarious.
    • His past gets a focal point in Volume 20. He was the third attempt of his parents to have a child after two miscarriages, and his inferiority complex stems from an accident that happened in his childhood where he took his dad's fishing rod without permission and broke it, thinking it was all his fault. His love for breasts might be genuine and all, but it's actually a way for Issei to mask his perceived sense of inferiority, and previously, also to (attempt to) cope with his insecurity born over Raynare's betrayal.
  • A Date with Rosie Palms: After Rias appears to him all of a sudden in Volume 2 and then goes back to her home. Thankfully, the anime omitted that little detail.
  • Deadly Upgrade:
    • Juggernaut Drive. Makes him a lot stronger at the cost of his sanity and reducing his devil lifespan by 99%.
    • Diabolos Dragon, which gives him the infinite power of Ophis. He wouldn't be able to contain it without Great Red's flesh, and falls comatose after using it. Ophis later decides to tone it down to spare his body.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He has his moments, normally when talking to Matsuda and Motohama. One particular example occurs when he tells them he's going to ditch them to go to Rias's home (in the Underworld).
Matsuda and Motohama: "Go to hell, you bastard!"
    (Issei hangs up the phone)
Issei: "Well, I am going to Hell."
    • He also does it (internally) when Rias can't tell who the Satan Rangers are.
  • Death by Origin Story: In Volume 1, Issei is killed by Raynare, kicking off the process where he is resurrected as a devil and becomes Rias's servant.
  • Death Glare: He usually receives this to the girls. But if it's from him, you might want to run away pretty quick. Sairaorg; one of the few characters who can actually go toe-to-toe with Issei, felt a cold chill in his spine when he sees him do this, even in a Ratings Game.
  • Declaration of Protection: Threaten any of his friends, especially Rias or Asia, and he'll pull this trope out. Expect a Curb-Stomp Battle if he really does have to fight, regardless if he gets beat up a little bit first.
  • Defenestrate and Berate: In the anime, Issei defeats Raynare and throws her out of the local church's window, only to be hauled back in by Koneko.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Crossed it when Asia died the second time courtesy of Shalba Beelzebub (or so he thinks). He decides enough is enough, he unlocks Juggernaut Drive and eats Shalba to near death. Thankfully, Irina and Rias help Issei snap out of it.
  • Determinator: Best exemplified with his fight against Raynare and went on from there.
  • Did You Just Romance Cthulhu?: He gains Ophis's affection from the way she clings at him.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Gets to land the final blow against Loki. Another occasion is Played for Laughs in Volume 14 where, after doing the Straight Man act for half the time, he finally smacks Fafnir after the latter keeps on sniffing Asia's treasured panties. The trope fits because Fafnir's a 'Dragon King' on par with Tannin!
  • Difficult, but Awesome: His Sacred Gear doubles his strength. While it may seem underwhelming, it can happen every ten seconds, and it stacks. If he stacks enough boosts, he can potentially gain enough power to kill God. Problem is, he needs a whole lot of stamina to pull it off.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Initially has trouble learning magic because he kept picturing the various girls naked and it messed with his concentration. Then he decided to roll with it and Dress Break was born.
  • Disappeared Dad: Somewhat, according to the spin-off that takes in the future, due to constantly being on hero tours to the points that his children don't see him much, but remain a normal father-children relationship, but are somewhat embarrassed by his lustful nature and Ex holding some, 'father issues' over him for not saving Asia from the curse.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: As part of his Heroic Self-Deprecation: a notable instance is when he drives himself crazy with worry over the promotion test, which turns out to be a duel between two applicants. Afraid he won't do well, Issei, who by this point had gone toe-to-toe with some serious heavy hitters, resolves to go all-out, despite facing a low-rank, maybe mid-rank devil. It ends poorly for the aforementioned low-rank.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Or in his case, The Devil Bites Back.
    • In volume 1, he gets back at Raynare for not only causing his first death, but also for stealing Asia's Twilight Healing Sacred Gear.
    • After being beaten up by Riser during his Rating Game in Volume 2, Issei returns the favor to him at the conclusion of the Engagement Challenge.
  • Draconic Humanoid: Boosted Gear gives his body draconic qualities (including dragons's weaknesses). After having his body rebuilt with Great Red's flesh, he can transform his body into that of a dragon's to hit harder.
  • The Dreaded: A heroic example. After his "little stunt" of coming Back from the Dead, the Anti-Maou faction has started to fear him because he survived Samael's blood curse, something that should have killed him already. Not to mention, he came back with Great Red's flesh and Ophis's powers.
  • Drop the Hammer: Briefly wields Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, against Loki.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: His final words before he succumbs to the Samael curse: "I love you Rias....." It didn't stick.
  • Dynamic Entry: His future self replicates Great Red, his "dad". Guy's got style.
  • Enemy Within: Rather downplayed compared to other examples, but as of BorN he's been tormented multiple times by visions of Raynare that mock him.
  • Engagement Challenge: He gets this three times so far, all played for both drama and funny effects. To wit:
    • Rias: go through the traditional Gremory engagement tests together, with the four Satans and Grayfia (who all hilariously cosplayed as Super Sentai) running the show. The process includes tests of general underworld knowledge, table manners, and of course, an exhibition match.
    • Akeno: defeats Baraqiel in a Rating Game match of Azazel Cup.
    • Rossweisse: He needs to win the Rating Game against the God Alliance Team due to her grandmother, Gondul, makes a deal with Asgard to marry her to Odin's successor).
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He had this reaction on his face moments before he was killed by Raynare.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: It's strongly implied that Kiba and Gasper want to be more than friends with him, and a harem guy like him is actually disturbed by the implications.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Issei might be an open pervert with active wishes for a harem, but that's because he treasures women. In the anime, when Riser kisses/molests his Queen just to make him jealous, then makes a comment to Rias implying she'd just make a good notch on his belt, Issei is furious. He outright refused having sex with Akeno while she was in a despair state, believing it won't do any good - but only make her feel more the blues.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Invokes this (at least in a girl's eyes) whenever he uses Dress Break and Bilingual, especially under Gasper's time freeze. Even Koneko lampshades it that only villains ever get to be that hammy.
  • Expy: Ichiei Ishibumi states that he designed Issei after Scryed's Kazuma, especially where Boosted Gear is located at.
  • Fanboy: Of Sairaorg, after witnessing him settle a mess.
  • Fantastic Racism: Discussed, Downplayed, and Justified. When asked by Akeno, he admits that he hates all Fallen Angels, though he's still open-minded enough to give individual members of said race the benefit of the doubt, such as Akeno herself whom he happily admits is different. He also has enough self-restraint to not act out on his hatred without just cause. As he admits, this is a direct result of his experiences with Raynare and her associates, as well as Kokabiel, not to mention being near constantly trolled by Azazel, the leader and spokesman for their race.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Issei learns the hard way that being nice to an Obviously Evil Fallen Angel, who's scheming to kill him because of his Sacred Gear, isn't going to change her heart.
  • Fatal Flaw:
    • Issei knows his perversion can and will get the better of him, but he just can't help it.
    • Another one that was pointed out by Azazel, is that Issei cares too much for his teammate that will make him rush toward a battle without thinking if they got hurt, which could be a problem if he has his own Peerage.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: His Dress Break technique involves him touching his target with his hand and using a Badass Fingersnap to strip off their clothing.
  • Finger-Suck Healing: After giving his left arm to Ddraig (turning it into a dragon arm) in order to gain power to beat Riser, he periodically receives this from Rias and Akeno to return it to normal.
  • The First Cut Is the Deepest: Despite his desire for romance, Yuma's betrayal and his subsequent Heroic B.S.O.D. fostered in him a fear of rejection.
  • First Episode Resurrection: Being brutally Impaled with Extreme Prejudice by Raynare causes him to bleed to death, necessitating his resurrection as a devil courtesy of Rias Gremory.
  • First Kiss: He shares his first kiss with Rias in volume 2. Subverted in volume 18 when Irina reveals that she kissed him long before the series starts and he forgot all about it.
  • First-Name Basis: He calls everyone in the group, aside from Kiba and Rias, by their first names, although the latter actually wanted to be called "Rias" instead of "Club President". He finally does call her by her first name at the end of Volume 10.
  • Flanderization: His clones' perversion is amplified, to the point of using Dress Break on any girl in sight.
  • Flat "What.": Has this reaction after promising Akeno that he'd take her on a date if she won her date against Diodora's Queen and doubting it would be much of an incentive. And then Akeno's power up happened...
  • Foil: To Vali, for having the greatest Red Dragon-White Dragon library and the fact that their origins and attitudes to their powers are different — Issei was a completely unremarkable boy who's more than willing to talk it out with past hosts of Boosted Gear, while Vali is a descendant of the original Lucifer who's more interested in dominating past users of Divine Dividing. He also has some contradistinctions with Cao Cao — both have companions willing to die for them — except Issei would want to keep them alive, while Cao Cao will do anything, including brainwashing people, for his cause.
  • Foregone Conclusion: Issei becoming "Harem King" was a given since this is what the story revolves around.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Sanguine, with a slight amount of Phlegmatic leanings.
  • Fragile Speedster: Welsh Sonic Boost Knight gives up armor in exchange for speed.
  • Freudian Excuse: Played for Laughs in a Volume 8 short story where he recalls to the Club an incident as a seven-year-old, when he and other boys listened to an old man teaching them to suck girls's breasts. When he went to see him again, he found him being arrested by cops and later sentenced to ten years behind bars, much to his confusion. Issei recounts that as though it was a Dark and Troubled Past on par with their own traumatic backstories. Koneko is not amused.
Koneko: "...A man who talks about indecent things to a child... A real pervert. The worst story ever."
    • Played straight when it comes to his death at Raynare's hands. First Episode Resurrection not withstanding, getting your guts ripped out by a pretty girl who you'd spent the day fawning over during what you thought was a fun date is traumatic. Never having much self-esteem to begin with, that threw him into total self-loathing, believing that no girl could possibly want him, let alone uber-hotties like Rias. That in turn passes on to Rias, who is ashamed of missing that for over a dozen volumes.
  • Friend to All Children: Apparently, children are attracted to him for some reason. This is semi-justified, though, due to the immense popularity the "Boob Dragon" show has between the young Underworld crowd. Furthermore, whenever he's around children, he goes out of his way to treat them kindly, and threatening a child within earshot is a major Berserk Button for him. If he could have all his children in one place, and didn't have to constantly fly out and deal with gods who threaten his family and the world, he'd happily shower them with affection too.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He goes from just another average high school freshman to a devil capable of taking down powerful enemies.
  • Future Badass: Issei has become a celebrity/ambassador in the future and has achieved the power of a God, being The Alliance's military top figure (he headed the ExE regiment, being a Delta Force-esque team to the Ranger-esque DxD team). Easily taking out the UL army in Dragon form, whom all of them are God level themselves.
  • God Was My Copilot: Combines with Great Red to Kaiju size.
  • Go Out with a Smile: When he died in the finale of Volume 11, this was the image shown to us.
  • Groin Attack: He gets hit after blocking a speeding dodgeball aimed for Kiba. Creates an awkward scene when Asia tries to heal him.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: A Human-Devil-Dragon hybrid.
  • Harem Seeker: His ultimate goal after being convinced by Rias. It eventually becomes a Foregone Conclusion by the time EX rolls around.
  • The Heart: The Occult Research Club sticks together mostly because of him.
  • Heartbroken Badass: His thoughts reveal that he's still haunted by Yuma/Raynare's betrayal and his decision to allow Rias to kill her.
  • Heroes Want Redheads: Out of his harem, he loves Rias the most but he Cannot Spit It Out for fear of destroying their relationship, partly due to emotional damage from Yuma's betrayal.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.: After Yuma/Raynare's betrayal, Issei becomes a heartbroken devil who's unable to profess his love for Rias. He ultimately gets over it by the end of volume 10.
  • Heroic R.R.O.D.: Due to his physical limits, he cannot call out Ddraig's full power for more than ten seconds without sacrificing a body part (at least initially). And when he used Juggernaut Drive, his lifespan was cut down to 100 years, so he'd be the first to die of natural causes amongst Rias's team, though this has been nullified following his death and rebirth during Volumes 11-12. And then there's the power he got from Ophis.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Past users of Boosted Gear sacrificed their souls just to keep his soul safe in Volume 12.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Ohhh, boy. Issei more or less spends the time he's not being perverted beating the crap out of himself for his perceived lack of strength. This becomes a plot point in volume 20.
  • Heroic Willpower: Boosted Gear's doubling effect can happen much more frequently than usual when Issei is sufficiently motivated. Early on, being a Determinator was the best thing he had going for him.
  • He's Back: And guess who's with him.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: He and Kiba are best buds.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • He's good at sewing, something that surprises Koneko.
    • He's also an excellent sculptor. He managed to make a perfect nude Rias figurine with his eyes closed. This duly impressed his class to the point that there was a bidding war over the figure. When he ultimately handed the figure to Rias instead, both she and Akeno were duly impressed. Issei would have happily made one for Akeno also except that both Rias and Asia loudly objected. (Since Akeno spelled out her idea of "modeling" right in front of them.)
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Duh.
  • Horned Humanoid: After activating Juggernaut Drive the first time.
  • Idiot Hero: Initially, with regards to romance; otherwise he has a lot of common sense and is actually a quick learner.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Not normally, but in Juggernaut Drive he tried to eat Shalba alive, and his future self does this to a God who tried to kill Asia. Though the second one may have been for intimidation.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Raynare uses her light spear to kill him before Rias resurrects him.
  • Informed Flaw: Everyone treats him as the weakest holder of Boosted Gear. Initially justified, though he eventually blows these assumptions apart with his rapid progress. Nowadays only the really strong characters, such as Azazel, Vali and Cao Cao still call him a "newbie", and even then they treat that as a compliment, knowing Issei can and will transcend his flaws.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Due to his insecurity about entering into a relationship with Rias and the trauma of Yuma's betrayal, Issei tries to keep himself distant from Rias and only treats her as his master, as opposed to the way he treats the rest of his harem. He finds out the hard way that this attitude was having the exact opposite effect he intended: when Rias asks him what she means to him, he answers that she's his boss. Rias bursts into tears and runs out of the room. It took the other girls's support to have Issei confess to her.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Despite his feelings for Rias, for a long while he was resigned to the idea that she was too far above him to pursue, and she deserved better than some lowly, pervy pawn. This insecurity also stems from Yuma's betrayal, which deeply traumatized him.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With lots of characters in the series, most of which place his as the younger one, with latest additions being Ophis and Great Red.
  • Intimidation Demonstration: Does this to Diodora when he punches the ground so hard it causes a crater. This pretty scares him out of fighting Issei.
  • I Owe You My Life: The primary reason Issei is so loyal to Rias is that she came to his aid and saved his life after Raynere stabbed him in the stomach and left him for dead.
  • Ironic Echo: He promised Koneko that he will never use Dress Break on his allies. The he accidentally uses it on Asia and Koneko in Volume 3, because he was targeting Irina at that time, again to Asia in Volume 6, and against Rossweisse in Volume 9 to surpass her in a friendly duel. The one with Xenovia in Volume 8 doesn't count because it was his clone running loose.
  • Ironic Hell: As part of the drawback from using Diabolos Dragon Form in Volume 20, during his recovery in Volume 21, Issei is suffering from Dragon Deficiency: a symptom that makes him physically unable to see, talk, or hear about breasts, and when the Boob Dragon song starts playing in the hospital where he's interred, he goes into a grand-mal seizure. It's equal parts hilarious and horrific. Fortunately, Ophis was able to cure his Dragon Deficiency at the end of his fight against Trihexa by nerfing the aforementioned form to a level that his mind and body can endure.
  • Jack-of-All-Stats:
    • Pawns have the secondary ability of "Promotion" if they are deep in enemy territory, just like in real chess. Which allows him to promote himself to any piece except a King, gaining that piece's abilities.
    • Normal Balance Breaker has no weakness but doesn't add any special powers.
  • The Juggernaut: Juggernaut Drive. Duh.
  • Kaiju: When he is resurrected and brings Ophis and Great Red, he combines with the latter and becomes gigantic sized to take out Annihilation Maker monsters. Ishibumi said that it's a one-time form only.
    • Becomes this literally in the future, with his size reaches one hundred meters. Oh, and he can shift forms at will!.
  • Kick the Son of a Bitch: He's willing to put enemies under the bus if he needs to. Just ask Riser, Shalba and Loki.
  • A Lady on Each Arm: After coming back from the dead the girls become more affectionate toward Issei to the point Rias and Akeno grab both his arms while walking to school. Xenovia suggests that she, Irina, and Asia should (try to) ride on his back, with Irina suggesting sitting on his shoulders as a "last resort."
  • Large Ham: Every single time he uses Dress Break and Bilingual to his female opponents, he will be bringing ham. Just how hammy was when this skill was first used in the anime? He breaks out his devil wings, pulls off a pose fit for a Kamen Rider show, and lets loose with a finger snap. While Ominous Latin Chanting is playing on the background.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: At the end of BorN, the memories of his and Rias's battle with Loki's clone of Issei are erased when they return to our world.
  • Lethal Joke Character: He initially thinks his pawn designation means he's a Red Shirt. In actuality, like in actual chess, he can become any other piece if he's deep in enemy territory (even the queen, the best piece of them all).
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: He insisted to Koneko that he fight Saji in a one-on-one match when Koneko tells him that it's a team battle. He then outright tells Koneko that if Saji wanted to, he could've used his Sacred Gear on her.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When someone threatens to harm or kill Issei's friends, you can be sure that Issei will send them into a world of hurt.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: An incredibly large one to Rias, Akeno, and, to a lesser extent, the rest of their team. When he (temporarily) died, Volume 12 starts by showing its devastating consequences on the team.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Everyone in his harem loves him and they're alright with his perverted antics. This was also pointed out when Issei lost his perverted nature thanks to Azazel, and the girls wanted him back to the way he was.
  • Love Hurts: It takes him nine volumes to recover from Yuma's betrayal, and what does he get after confessing to Rias? One volume later, he dies trying to save Ophis.
  • Magikarp Power: How his left gauntlet works. Every ten seconds, his power doubles. Get it boosted long enough and he can kill any deity. Due to the long preparation, no one's gonna wait for him to power up completely and get their asses kicked.
    • Also applies to him more broadly. Early on he's a bog-standard human with a special ability he can barely use and quickly realizes he's easily the weakest of Rias's peerage. Later on, with plenty of Training from Hell to help him along, he's become far and away the strongest.
  • Magnetic Hero: He attracts special people like crazy. Practically everybody important in this series had some form of interaction with him. This is actually lampshaded by Sirzechs when he's talking with Azazel. Ddraig notes that having Dragon powers is a major contributing factor.
  • Male Frontal Nudity: In Season 1 Episode 2 and it's uncensored, as a Freeze-Frame Bonus.
  • Marry Them All: By the time of EX, Issei would succeed in his quest to become a "Harem King" and has a brood of over ten kids with each one having a different mother!(Confirmed mothers include Rias, Akeno, Xenovia, Koneko, Kuroka, Asia, Irina, Ravel, Rossweisse and Elmenhilde) Eat your heart out, Tenchi Masaki!
  • Marshmallow Hell: He's usually the receiver of these from the Club girls, and hoo boy does he love it.
  • Meaningful Name: His last name Hyoudou means "regular soldier" in Japanese, given his initial status as a pawn.
  • Meaningful Echo: His Badass Creed, especially about holding both infinity (Ophis) and dream (Great Red), is a lot more significant now that he's got both existences within him.
  • Mentor Archetype: He teaches Gasper and the other younger members of the club how to become more capable fighters.
  • Me's a Crowd: Something Azazel experimented on him. Three hundred of him to be exact. And yes, the cover illustration for said short story is a Shout-Out to 300.
  • Mighty Glacier: Welsh Dragonic Rook has heavy attack but in this mode speed is lowered.
  • Mistaken for Gay: After Kiryuu spreads a photo of Issei and Kiba singing a duet together, rumors of them having a relationship spread like wildfire. Doesn't help that Kiba sometimes outright tells Issei that he'll protect him. Issei just thinks he's nuts.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: He's the servant and Rias is the mistress.
  • Mr. Fanservice: After his Training from Hell with Tannin, he has developed so fit a body half of his female classmates fell for him, his notoriety for his perversions notwithstanding.
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: He grows extra limbs, some of which are sword-like, when in Juggernaut Drive.
  • Multiform Balance: How Illegal Move Trident works.
  • Mundane Utility: How he acquired Dress Break in the first place was to peel vegetables at a distance.
  • Must Not Die a Virgin: The reason why Sairaorg thought he was still alive.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits!: There's not actually related, but he doesn't take too kindly to other guys hitting on Asia.
  • Naked on Revival: In volume 1, when Dohnaseek wounds Issei, Rias rescues him, strips him naked and heals him up.
  • Nerf: His Dragon Deification Super Mode is downgraded into a "Pseudo" Dragon Deification after the battle with Trihexa because otherwise the backlash of using Ophis's immense power with his comparatively underdeveloped body would kill him.
  • Never Accepted in His Hometown: At Kuoh Academy, Issei's often considered to be a dim-witted pervert, who is a Harem Seeker and the Butt-Monkey amongst girls who detest perverted boys. In the Underworld, however, he's a legendary hero.
  • Nice Guy: Despite being a pervert, he's actually one of the kindest, most generous people in the series. Part of the reason why girls are falling head over heels for him.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Destroying one of Cao Cao's eyes didn't exactly end well when he gets a rematch with replacing his now-missing eye with Medusa's eye.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: A perverted high school student that is both a dragon and a devil.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: He mostly deals with his enemies this way in-battle, though he'd much rather talk his way out.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Stays behind the group in Volume 11 to rescue Ophis from Shalba.
  • Normally, I Would Be Dead Now: This trope happens to him so many times that it's not funny anymore. To wit:
    • Didn't accept a membership flier from Rias's Familiar at the start of the story? He would have been Killed Off for Real by Yuma.
    • Rias didn't rescue him from Dohnaseek, and later Freed? Would have died.
    • Didn't attain Balance Breaker against Kuroka? Would have died.
    • Never used Phoenix tears before his second fight with Cao Cao? Would have died.
    • The Dragon Eater curse would have killed him had Ddraig and Boosted Gear's past hosts had not interfered.
    • Using Dragon Deification a second time would have killed him, but Ophis managed to take upon herself the backlash and downgraded Dragon Deification so he can use it without risking death again.
  • Nosebleed: Too many times to count. However, in the later volumes, Issei has gotten somewhat use to the girls antic and becomes more calm about it.
  • The Nudifier: Dress Break — anyone he touches, his/her clothes get shredded off. This becomes a Felony Misdemeanor in subsequent Rating Games where, technically, there are no rules.
  • Oblivious to Love: He is more clueless about his harem's feelings than Natsuru Senou. It took about halfway through the series to even consider that Rias returns his feelings despite her entire household already treating her as part of the family and Issei knowing that she never displays any of the intimacy he experiences toward the other two males in the peerage. Justified, due to the psychological damage Yuma has caused him which took several volumes for him to fully recover from. Interestingly enough, this only applies to his own love life. He is quick enough to realize Tsubaki's growing feelings for Kiba while Kiba is as clueless as Issei was.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: Every single time he makes up a new move, the Rating Games always outright ban that move after use the match. Doesn't mean he can't use it outside a Rating Game, though.
  • Official Couple: After ten volumes, he's officially a couple with Rias. Then again, it's not like it ever stopped his harem, nor the fact that he hasn't fulfilled his dream.
  • Oh, Crap!: When he realizes how insane and dangerous Raynare really is.
  • One Head Taller: Than Asia, Koneko, and Ravel, standing at 175 cm/5'7'' as an adult.
  • One-Man Army: Defeats a group of middle-class grim reapers, beings stronger than high-class devils, by himself. And this is with him only using Balance Breaker and at this point, he's a lot weaker because he just fired off two Dragon Blasters, and used Gift on Rias and Akeno. This surprises Siegfried as to how strong Issei really is.
  • One-Winged Angel: A heroic example. Towards the end of Volume 6, Issei snaps when Shalba tells him that Asia was killed. The result: Issei sprouts wings, enters Juggernaut Drive and beats the tar out of Shalba growing swords and dragon arms from all of the jewels in his dragon armor.
  • Only Friend: Ophis considers Issei its one and only true friend.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Inverted. Cao Cao, Vali, Sairaorg and Kiba all express their wishes to defeat Issei one day. Them being all guys, Issei wasn't amused by it.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Normally, he would proclaim his love for breasts, make some smartass comments, and as hot-blooded as possible. However, when he really gets serious, other characters note that he's different from the way he usually is.
  • Ordinary High-School Student: He lived as an average high school student until one day he was stabbed to death by his first girlfriend and was resurrected as a devil by the beautiful top-ranked devil Rias. Issei then goes from a perverted and unlucky high school student to an Action Hero who dreams of having his own harem.
  • Our Hero Is Dead: He is thought to be dead during volumes 11-12 after his final duel with Shalba.
  • Pals with Jesus: He is the only person Ophis considers a friend. He's also on good terms with the Archangel Gabriel (the current leader of Heaven), and his future brother in law, Sirzechs Lucifer, is one of the four Great Satans.
  • Papa Wolf: He becomes this to his children by the time EX rolls around. He is willing to help his children fight Loki and protect them no matter the cost.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: He's a pervert, a peeping tom and the creator of all manner of techniques with other applications than combat, and he'll sing praises about the chests of the girls around him, but he never makes a real attempt at actually propositioning them, and in fact once the girls start actively putting the moves on him he collapses into a stammering, borderline-terrified wreck scrambling for a way out: just look at the times Rias, Asia, Xenovia and Akeno approach him. While there are extenuating circumstances, his reactions are revealed to be in large part a symptom of his trauma and crippling self-doubt: he's certain that should he actually accept the girls' advances, the other shoe'll drop and he'll end up in misery. After all, that's what happened with Raynare...
  • Parental Substitute: Issei becomes a parental figure to Asia, Koneko and Gasper, considering that Asia had no father and was raised in the church, Koneko's sister left her after killing their abusive master, and Gasper was ridiculed by his own family in addition to both humans and vampires to the point that he became a shut-in.
  • People Jars: Combined with Crazy Enough to Work in the most amusing manner possible, only in this series. The recoil from his fight with Rizevim is a near Pyrrhic Victory, and the treatment Azazel comes up with, after he's been connected to life-support for five days, is to dunk him in a jar full of breast milk. (The nightmarish logistics of trying to round up that much is briefly mentioned.) It works.
  • The Peeping Tom: One of the primary reasons his wives keep him on a short leash is that he loves to sneak into the girls locker room or up to a peep-hole and watch them change. In fact, he was introduced trying to do this. Though he wasn't actually peeping at the time, he very much wanted to.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: His missed attacks can blow up mountains. The first time he uses Trident Bishop, he would have killed the Hero Faction had Cao Cao not saved them. Later, Trident Bishop can destabilize artificial dimensions. Kiba points out later on that whenever they train, it just feels so tiring to train with Issei because one hit from Issei will kill him.
  • Playing Card Motifs: In the ending theme of the Season 1 anime, there's a playing card theme, and Issei is shown as the Joker.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Issei's death at the hands of Raynare helps kickstart the plot.
  • Porn Stash: He thinks he hid it pretty well until his mother blurts out where it's located at. Later on, the girls get to look at said stash, which humiliates Issei further.
  • Power at a Price: In the beginning (at least with his battle against Riser), he borrowed Ddraig's power at the cost of his left arm, turning dragon-like — not that he minds it, as Rias and Akeno have to do "that sort of thing"note  every couple of days to turn it back to normal.
  • Powered Armor: Balance Breaker: Boosted Gear Scale Mail
  • Power Perversion Potential: Half of his abilities works like this, and he is trying very hard to twist the other half to work that way too, especially in the case of a certain very well endowed angel...
    • Dress Break practically inverts this: it was created to oogle naked bodies, and just happens to be useful from time to time.
  • The Power of Love: Issei is powered by this... but mostly he's powered by lust.
    • Note that this is not a good thing. The first time it happens is when he thinks Asia has been killed by Shalba. He loses his shit and literally eats the guy alive. Issei on The Power of Love is absolutely terrifying.
  • Promotion to Parent: Played with. Ophis seems to act like his child and has called him "Papa", and she's listened to his request that she not fight. However, he's more of a father figure than an actual parent to her.
  • Punched Across the Room: How he defeats Yuma/Raynare. In the anime, he also subjects her to Destination Defenestration.
  • Rage Breaking Point: While Diodara monologues in Volume 6, he gets angrier and angrier, culminating in an explosion of anger as Issei reaches Balance Breaker and screams "SHUT UP!" when Diodora threatens to rape Asia.
  • Rags to Riches: While he wasn't exactly destitute at the beginning, he was middle-class at best. After his TV show got started, his income skyrocketed. It's currently managed by Grayfia because he isn't ready to deal with that much money yet.
  • Reality Ensues: He ultimately succeeds in becoming a "Harem King" ethically - by honestly loving a lot of beautiful women. Turns out there's not enough hours in the day for him to properly shower them all with that kind of attention - to say nothing of the resulting children (over twenty!). Defied in that he still does a damned fine job of it, entertaining groups of wives and kids at any given time while running around doing his day job. And though some of them are a bit bitter about it, they all know he loves them and would be willing to fight for them if they're in danger.
    • This applies outside of EX as well. A lonely and desperate teenage boy, with a bad reputation, especially one whose parents really want grandkids, who is approached by a seemingly cute and friendly girl that wants to go out with him, despite knowing his rep, will jump at the occasion. Furthermore, when said girl ultimately ends up treating him cruelly, through no fault of his own, essentially for shits and giggles, and leaves him heartbroken, it seriously jades him to when girls genuinely try for his affections, especially if he thinks those girls are way out of his league.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Delivers this towards Shalba the second time he curb-stomped him.
  • Red Baron: The "Red Dragon Emperor" (by taming Ddraig), "Breast Dragon Emperor" (by attaining Balance Breaker by pressing Rias's nipples), and "Hero of the Underworld".
  • Red Is Heroic: His Red Dragon Emperor Armor.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Kiba's blue, with the armor mention above.
  • Required Secondary Powers: He needs a lot of stamina just to be able to make Boosted Gear work properly.
  • The Rival: While Vali is more likely his rival thanks to their Sacred Gears, he considers his true rival to be Saji.
  • Rivals Team Up: With Vali against Loki.
  • Roar Before Beating: When in Juggernaut Drive during his duel with Shalba.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When Issei witnesses Asia's death at the hands of Raynare in volume 1 and Shalba sends Asia to the dimensional gap, Issei lets all his anger fly on them.
  • Run or Die: After Freed brutally beats him up in volume 1, Issei is forced to leave Asia behind and abandon the fight.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: He's the one who screams when he accidentally walks in on Asia while she was in the shower instead of the other way around.
  • Sealed Inside a Person-Shaped Can: Issei is the can to Ddraig.
  • Second Year Protagonist: He's a second year high school student at Kuoh Academy by the beginning of the series.
  • Serious Business: If you want to put on a strip show for him, take out your bra first before your panties. Sairaorg's Bishop found that out the hard way.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Saji to Sona, which becomes a bit complicated when he starts calling Sona on a First-Name Basis, as well as Shinra/Kiba, which he further enforces once he realizes that the latter is apprently becoming too close to him for comfort.
  • Shoulder Cannon: His Illegal Trident Bishop form.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: With Rias. Referred by Azazel as "that stupid couple".
  • Signature Move: If he's fighting a female opponent, 90% of the time he'll be using either Dress Break/Bilingual/both and a Dragon Shot.
  • Skewed Priorities: Women are always his primary focus. Azazel takes advantage of this; convincing him that another war won't give him the peace to build his harem, and Vali's Half Dimension will halve Rias's bust size. Probably the most ridiculous example occurs when he's dead; how can he feel up the girls if his body's been destroyed?
    • And particularly with the later example, Sairaorg actually more or less predicted it, pointing out to the rest of the Occult Research Club that he wouldn't stay dead because he hasn't had sex with Rias yet in order to break them out of their Heroic B.S.O.D..
  • The Southpaw: His Boosted Gear is attached to his left hand. Consequently, due to this, he wields Ascalon Southpaw (since, when it fused with him, it became a katar).
  • Spanner in the Works: He has repeatedly put a wrench in villains' plans.
    • In volume 1, Raynare didn't notice that Issei punched her in the face so hard she got blown out.
    • In volume 2, Issei interrupts Riser's engagement party and duels with him.
    • In volume 5, he uses Bilingual on Sona's team and had their plans found out.
    • In volume 6, Diodora didn't realize that Issei defeated Raynare to gain Asia's affection.
  • Special Odd Hand: His left hand houses the power of the Boosted Gear, one of the 13 Longinus which holds the spirit of the Welsh Dragon, the Red Dragon Emperor, Ddraig, one of the Heavenly Dragons.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": The fan translation of the light novels and recent scanlations use "Ise" for his katakana nickname (イッセー, Issē) to differentiate from his kanji name (一誠, Issei). This is averted in Funimation's subtitled streams, where they use Issei for both readings.
  • Spit Take: When his mother asks him when is she going to have a grandchild since he finally calls Rias by name.
  • Status Buff: How Gift works.
  • Stock Shonen Hero: Issei is a perverted version of this character type. He's a carefree and somewhat clueless Lovable Sex Maniac, but he's also a Chivalrous Pervert who genuinely adores women and would do anything for them. He is on a quest To Be a Master and become a "Harem King". He's a Magnetic Hero and Chick Magnet who attracts uncountable amounts of girls (and some guys). Issei will go to hell and back in order to protect his harem and comrades and God help you if you dare to harm any of them. He's in possession of the Sacred Gear "Boosted Gear" which is listed as one of the ultimate Sacred Gears, said to have the power to kill a God when fully mastered.
  • Straight Man: When not in pervert mode, he actually becomes this — to Asia and Xenovia when they end up praying and gain damage, to Rias when he recognized who the Satan Rangers were (while Rias thought it was a new enemy), to Bikou and Vali when they thought Mil-tan was a Cat Girl, tried this to Irina when she said she wanted to create a new club but is still joining the Occult Research Club, and to Rossweisse when he lampshades how her immediate reaction to the Clothing Damage she received from Dress Break was to complain about losing her clothes that cost her money instead of immediately covering herself up.
  • Stock Light Novel Hero: Issei Hyoudou sits on the fence between this trope and Stock Shonen Hero. He looks and acts more like a shonen protagonist, but (aside from literally debuting in a light novel) fills the Harem Genre, Ordinary High-School Student and "power acquisition" requirements. He's the current host of the Red Dragon Emperor—a being so powerful that Angels, Demons AND Fallen Angels had to join forces to break up a fight with its Arch-Enemy. The harem aspect, however, is not by accident—Issei's greatest dream is to become the "Harem King".
  • Student and Master Team: Forms one as the student to Rias at the beginning of the series, and as the master to Gasper, Koneko and Asia later on in the series.
  • Submissive Badass: He's more powerful than any member of his group, but he's still going to follow Rias's orders no questions asked.
  • Superpower Lottery: Subverted. While one would think that having one of the strongest Sacred Gear that doubles your power every ten seconds would be a big win? Issei himself is utterly talentless and has to compensate by going through Training from Hell to learn how to use it. Played straight when technically becomes the offspring of both Ophis and Great Red.
  • Technical Pacifist: Never kills anybody even though he beats the crap out of them.
  • Telepathy: He can hear a woman's secrets and plans just from their breasts.
  • Tender Tears: Yes, perverts are able to regard girls as people with feelings, hopes and dreams, not just objects.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: Longinus Smasher with a Great Red powerup against a beast that has a Healing Factor faster than anyone can damage. He obliterated Jabberwocky this way with assistance from Sirzechs's servants.
  • This Loser Is You: Pre Devil Upgrades, Issei was a perverted and unlucky virgin who can't win sometimes.
  • This Means War!: In Volume 3, Issei declares war on Xenovia and Irina for threatening to kill Asia in front of him.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Made it his creed to never kill anyone, and at worst give people a bloody beatdown. Even fatal attacks in Ratings Games are rendered nonlethal due to its special rules, and Issei even spares Diodora Astaroth after beating the living daylights out of him. Eventually subverted, with Shalba (after their second fight).
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Once he gets his devil upgrades, he becomes both respected and feared amongst the Three Factions and the Underworld in general. There's also some girls at the academy and a harem that reveres him.
  • Time to Unlock More True Potential: Well, it is a shounen series after all. Except his is a bit more unconventional than the norm.
  • Title Drop: Since Great Red used his powers to create Issei a body with the help of Ophis, he's now also known as the "Dragon of Dragons" or "D×D" who's still in high school; or in short, High School D×D.
  • To Be a Master: His goal is to one day rise in rank to that of a High-Class Devil so that he can gather his own servants and create his own harem, becoming a "Harem King". He achieves this as of Volume 22.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Actively grinds millions! Showcased with four of his evil pieces becoming Mutated Pieces
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Cheesecake, according to one of the short stories.
  • Tranquil Fury: He's usually loud and hotblooded, but if he's in this state, you might want to run away pretty quick.
  • Transformation Is a Free Action: Somehow, no one attacks him while he's transforming in Balance Breaker form. Sirzechs lampshades that it's a rule to never attack while the opponent is transforming.
  • Transformation Sequence: When he puts on his Balance Breaker for the first time in the anime.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Seems like a lot of people think that he's not as badass as he's supposed to be. He proves them wrong all the time.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: His main problem once he actually starts getting stronger is that he lacks technique.
  • Unstoppable Rage: On a few occasions:
    • The first example is a combination of humorous and awesome: he flips when he learns that Vali's Half Dimension technique will cut Rias's bustline, and gives out such a beatdown Vali considers using Juggernaut Drive against him.
    • The second one is dead serious; Issei gets steadily more angry listening to Diodora's Evil Gloating about what he has planned for Asia. Then, Issei finally lets out a Big "SHUT UP!" and uses Balance Breaker to curb-stomp Diodora, leaving the latter to die at the hands of Shalba. After Shalba himself sends Asia into the dimensional gap (where she would have died if Vali hadn't found her by chance), he initially can't comprehend what just happened. Then he slowly walks toward Shalba, while Ddraig warns the club to get the hell away if they want to live, and goes on yet another Curb-Stomp Battle out of rage, grief and revenge for his seemingly fallen friend.
  • Unwitting Pawn: He doesn't realizes that Raynare is using him to obtain his Sacred Gear until it's too late.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: Thirty years later, he can shift from his human form to a Kaiju-sized (a hundred meters in length) dragon form at will. The body he got from Great Red makes him possible to do it.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: His old body is destroyed beyond repair, so Great Red and Ophis creates him a new, fully draconic body.
  • We Do the Impossible: Summoning a god from another dimension that other gods don't know about definitely counts.
  • Weirdness Magnet: He lampshades that he's been attracting a lot of weird people lately.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: He's called out by the other members of his group when asked as to what Rias really means to him. He says "President" is "President" and not as "Rias", causing Rias to run out the room crying. The other girls turn around and fix his emotional baggage.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer...: Anytime Issei needs a serious power up, it's always going to be with Rias's breasts, much to Ddraig's despair. Examples include:
    • Need to attain Balance Breaker when Issei's getting curb-stomped? Push Rias's nipples.
    • Need to get out of Juggernaut Drive? Push Rias's nipples. This particular incident earned her the Embarassing Nickname "Switch Princess" from Bikou.
    • Having a power-up in the middle fighting the Hero Faction? Push Rias's nipples that are glowing.
    • Already unconscious from a Regulus Nemea-equipped Sairaorg? Have Rias's breasts be glowing in a crimson color.
    • Need to have more firepower when you're so tired after using two Dragon Blasters and Gift? Use Gift on Rias's breasts and have them act as a battery.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: In EX, Issei ends up as this in the future, becoming so greatly stuck on his job as a celebrity and ambassador in the Underworld that he barely have any time for his harem or for his children, leaving Kiba to babysit the latter ones. The degree of neglect is unclear admittedly, as his wives are said to keep him "on a short leash" and he has at least ten kids to divide his free time on.
    • Averted in the final chapter. In the future, his job description is punching God-Class beings who threatened his family or the world and the time he cannot give to the kids is because he cannot be together with all of them at the same time. Well, considering his families are literally everywhere (Romania, Kyoto, the Underworld, Grigori, the list just goes on), they are more vulnerable to the UL's assaults, and he needs to be there to help them fight.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Issei is somewhat terrified of attractive women, all due to a very brutal betrayal by Raynare. Already suffering from low-self esteem, he often avoids getting close to girls he finds attractive out of fear that they find him boring. For a while, this fear puts a damper in his relationship with Rias. He gets better.
  • The Worf Barrage
    • Possibly the weirdest one ever. Dress Break doesn't work on Sairaorg's Bishop because she's willing to strip, thus using said skill would be pointless because ruining a strip show is pretty bad. He then tries to use Bilingual but the only thing that's coming out from her breasts is which piece of clothing she's willing to take off next.
    • A more serious example would be his Balance Breaker Scale Mail. If you could break his armor, then it indicates that you're a threat to him. If you can't, expect to be utterly destroyed in combat with ease.
    • Currently, his Trianna Rook seems to be on its way here. So far, Sairaorg and Grendel have deflected it.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Piss him off by hurting his loved ones, and gender wouldn't be an obstacle as to who he'll punch.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: He's a devil who wields the holy sword, Ascalon.
  • You Monster!: Is on the receiving end at the end of EX from one of the UL "generals." He outright states that by that point, he's heard it so often that it no longer fazes him.
  • Your Answer to Everything: Breasts, full stop.

    Rias Gremory

President Rias Gremory

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dxd_07_888.jpg

Role: King
Species: Pure Devil
Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa (Japanese) and Jamie Marchi (English)

My name is Rias Gremory. I am a Devil. And I am your Master. Nice to meet you, Hyoudou Issei-kun. Can I call you Ise?

The president of the Occult Research Club and the head of the House of Gremory, Rias is a top-ranked devil at Kuoh Academy who catches the eye of Issei Hyoudou. Later, he summons her with his dying words. Taking pity on the boy, and also because she's interested in his Sacred Gear, she revives him with eight Pawn pieces. After that, an interesting relationship blossoms between the two. Her parents, Zeoticus and Venelana Gremory, are devils.

  • Action Girlfriend: Rias is a devil who appears when Issei summons her in his final moments. She then resurrects him as a devil and becomes his master, main love interest and eventual girlfriend.
  • Adorkable: When Rias catches Issei with other girls and tends to act childish about it, like getting into a pillow fight with Akeno.
  • And I Must Scream: Thanks to Loki's corruption in BorN, she's unable to fight his control until Issei snaps her out of it.
  • Arranged Marriage: Rias was placed into an engagement with Riser Phenex in an attempt to unite their families and to preserve the bloodline of Pure-Blooded Devils.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: As the Heir Apparent to the great devil House Gremory and the President of the Occult Research Club, she can kick major ass when she needs to.
  • Babies Ever After: In the future she has a son with Issei, named Ex.
  • Badass in Distress:
    • That is, if you can call the engagement party with Riser being a distress moment.
    • Since her body is corrupted by Loki in BorN, she is trapped within herself.
  • Bathing Beauty: She has many Shower Scenes.
  • Battle Couple: She eventually gets together with Issei. Becomes more so when her breasts act as a battery for Issei.
  • Bedmate Reveal: In Volume 1, Issei wakes up up thinking the events of the previous night were just a dream. Then he notices he's naked. And that Rias is curled up under the blankets next to him equally naked before she awakens and is completely nonchalant about the situation. Hilarity Ensues when Issei's mother enters his room.
  • Belly Dancer: In the second OVA, she's strongarmed by Unas into becoming a bellydancer.
  • Benevolent Boss: She loves her subordinates so much she treats them as family rather than employees.
  • Betty and Veronica: The Veronica to Asia's Betty for Issei's Archie when she moved to the Hyoudou residence.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She is one of the nicest and personable schoolgirls you will ever meet. Nevertheless, if you push her far enough (such as insulting her servants, especially Issei), she will be prepared to vaporize you into dust.
  • Big Good: The leader of the Occult Research Club.
  • Blood Knight: A subdued example. Rias has no love for life-and-death violence at all, but she does greatly enjoy Ratings Games as the good, clean combat sport they were intended to be. According to Ichiei Ishibumi, much as Issei's goal of ending the war is to focus on having a harem, her goal is to clean out the corruption so she can fight safely once again.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In episode 10 of BorN, Loki corrupts Rias with his curse, but Issei snaps her out of it two episodes later.
  • Breast Expansion: Reversed; restoring Issei with her breasts after Gift being used on them causes them to shrink. Fortunately (for Issei) they grow back after she rests.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: After finding out the dark secret before she became in charge of Kuoh Town, she calls out Zekram Bael, her maternal ancestor.
  • Can't Catch Up:
    • Unlike the rest of the club, she doesn't gain any new ability; thus, she did not get any stronger than where she was initially, to the point that she thought of herself as The Load during her and Issei's fight against Sairaorg and his Pawn.
    • Eventually rectified as she does learn or gain various new abilities thanks to absorbing and adapting Issei's aura, such as the finishing move Extinguished Star and her own version of the boosted gear's armor.
  • The Chessmaster: As King of her peerage, she can determine where her pieces will go in Rating Games and in battles.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • After falling in love with Issei, Rias tend to get very jealous whenever girls get close to him and said that Issei belongs to her only. She's generally quite playful and teasing when confronting the relatively more aggressive Asia, only to become aggressive herself when confronting the more teasing Akeno.
    • Averted after Issei confesses to her and they start dating; Rias starts to accept Issei's dream of having a harem and doesn't get as easily jealous as before.
  • Club President: She is the president of the Occult Research Club until Asia replaces her by the time Volume 19 rolls around.
  • Contralto of Danger: While still distinctly feminine compared to Xenovia's, Rias' voice in the Japanese version is deeper and more mature than even Akeno's, making her sound more "womanly" than the rest of the teenage girl cast. This dignified tone is fitting as she is the head of authority within the household of the Occult Research club.
  • Cool Big Sis: Rias is lovingly kind or sternly mature as the situation calls for it.
  • Crazy Enough to Work: Her magical breasts work because of this trope.
  • Crutch Character: At the start, she's the strongest member of the club. As time goes on, she devolves into middle tier (for a while that is). Technically she didn't get any weaker; the others just got stronger more quickly than she did (again, only for a while).
  • Cry Cute: In one scene in Season 1's opening, after Issei rescues her from Riser, and after Issei comes back to life at the end of Volume 12.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Some of the light novel artwork portrays her with these.
  • Daddy's Girl: She loves her father Zeoticus very much to the point where he and Sirzechs had nosebleeds by looking at how Rias acted as child.
  • Deliberately Distressed Damsel: Didn't really want to play as the Damsel in Distress to lure out the remaining Issei clones. Then she gets into it, believing Azazel's suggestion. Sure enough, the Issei clones go and try to rescue her.
  • Deuteragonist: Behind Issei, who is the focal protagonist, Rias is the second main focal character of the series.
  • The Dividual: With Akeno in nature. From narrative perspective is clear that they are intended to work as an indivisible combo for all kind of actions. Yes, even (or maybe especially) that ones.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": Rias starts taking an issue with Issei continuing to call her "President" instead of her actual name, as she wants to take their mutual feelings to the next level, but Issei is still treating their relationship as master-servant. This reaches its peak in Volume 10 before the rest of the Club spells out the problem for Issei.
  • Does Not Like Men: A Downplayed example. She gets along fine with males, right up until they show any romantic interest in her whatsoever, at which point she promptly ices over. This is because, as heir apparent to the house of Gremory, the only men who've ever been interested in her were only interested in her house and title, not the woman; by the time she grew up into a Ms. Fanservice, she'd been soured on the idea of romance altogether. Issei, being the Lovable Sex Maniac he is, helps her open her heart to him and him alone.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: She is tough on Issei when he beings training with her.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Later on, she becomes known as "Switch Princess", much to her embarrassment, and blames Bikou for it. She is later called the "Crimson Bust Princess" by Azazel in Volume 11.
  • Face Palm: Does this all the time.
  • Fiery Redhead: Subverted; normally, she's overall rather rather level-headed and seldom raises her voice even when she's serious. She does, however, bring this out when it comes with Issei, but even then she does grow out of it to an extent later in the series.
  • First Kiss: She shares her first kiss with Issei.
  • Foreign Fanservice: Although they look to have similar skin tone, after Issei's mother walks in on the pair naked in bed together, she specifically tells his father he's in bed with a foreign girl. Probably has to do with her radiant crimson hair. While red hair does exist in Japan, it's very rare unless it's a foreigner, and native Japanese with red hair tend to dye it black to avoid ostracism.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: The Team Mom.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: The Choleric.
  • Go-Go Enslavement: During an OVA an Egyptian prince possessing Issei makes her dance for him in a very skimpy bikini outfit. Naturally and Issei both enjoyed it.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: She refers to Akeno as her best friend.
  • Idiot Hair: While definitely not an idiot, Rias has a single hair strand sticking out from the top of her head.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: Because of Issei's appreciation of her body, she becomes romantically interested in him.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Towards the end of BorN, Issei is forced to fight Rias because of Loki creating multiple timelines.
  • Image Song: Crimson No Binetsu
  • Intimate Healing: She heals Issei's wounds from a Fallen Angel attack by cuddling naked with him in bed.
  • Large and in Charge: Rias is 172 cm/5'8'' and towers over everyone else.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: At the end of BorN, the memories of her and Issei's battle with Loki's clone of Issei are erased when they return to our world.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: After Issei died and returned, she created a new technique, considered too dangerous to use in Rating Games, because it would kill too fast for emergency teleportation to save the victim. Rias mentions she wanted it to be like that, since it's a technique to kill anyone who tries to hurt Issei again.
  • Lineage Comes from the Father: Subverted. While she has red hair and blue eyes like her ancestors from her father's side, her Power of Destruction abilities and strict demeanor come from her mother's side.
  • Made of Temptation: Successfully tempts Rossweisse to join the group as teacher and Rook despite her age. Issei notes that she could have a successful career selling insurance... or anything else, really. This comes to a head when EX reveals that Rias indeed becomes a very successful businesswoman, managing company holdings and franchises that her husband Issei and the family own.
  • Magnetic Hero: She has gathered quite a lot of powerful and special people in her group even before meeting Issei. Lampshaded by Sirzechs when talking with Azazel.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Her surname Gremory is one of the 72 Pillars of the Ars Goetia, and is said to show herself as an attractive woman.
    • Rias's Pawn is a Fairy Chess Piece that can also move sideways. It was proposed as a way to "shake up" the rules of chess, as Issei does for the Rating Game. This part is later double subverted , as Ishibumi revealed that being the Pokémon nerd that he is, named her after Garchompnote , who just so happens to be a Dragon type (which is weak against Fairy types).
  • Mentor Archetype: She teaches Issei about how the Occult Research Club works in battles.
  • Mistress and Servant Boy: She is the mistress to Issei's servant.
  • A Mother to Her Men: She really loves her servants; breaking their hearts and making them cry is a one-way ticket to the afterlife. Ddraig states that the Gremory family is known for being extremely affectionate toward their servants.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Second largest bust in the series and not afraid to show it off. In general she is the character that appear naked more often (since the first episode).
  • Nice Girl: Despite her strict nature during missions and training, Rias is very kind and caring toward her Peerage than most other masters. That is, if you don't push her buttons.
  • Noodle Incident: Why she traded Rossweisse into Issei's peerage isn't elaborated on at all and comes completely out of the blue.
    • She gives him everyone she recruited after him. It's symbolic. Also, since Issei is still her Pawn, and she therefore still has full authority over his peerage, trading pieces really doesn't matter (yet).
  • Official Couple: In Volume 10, Issei finally confesses to her and she officially becomes his girlfriend. Issei still wishes for a harem and now that she's secure about how he feels about her, Rias will let him have it as long as she's always number one. He proposes to her in Volume 22 and she accepts, making her the first official fiancee in an ever-growing list of them. (Koneko proposes to Issei in Volume 11, and he accepts on the condition that she grow taller and bustier, but this has yet to be revisited.)
  • Ojou: The heiress of the Gremory Clan.
  • Onee-sama: Referred to as one of the "Two Great Ladies of Kuoh Academy".
  • Out-Gambitted: By Sona during their Rating Game in Volume 5.
  • Passing the Torch: Upon her graduation, Rias assigns Asia to take her place as the club's president.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: She has the "Power of Destruction", a type of demonic energy that allows her to release energies that can disintegrate matter, both living and inanimate, with relative ease. She is further able to control the shape and power of the technique such as creating multiple softball sized bullets to lessen the destructive force yet increase the range of her attack.
  • Playing Card Motifs: In the ending theme of the Season 1 anime, there's a playing card theme, and Rias is shown as the King.
  • Property of Love: As Issei's master, Rias calls him her possession and says that he belongs to her only. This was taken Up to Eleven later on as Rias' feelings for him grow and she doesn't want any girls close to him. This eventually changes in volume 10 when they become an Official Couple, even letting him have a date with others and a harem.
  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: Sometimes wears a pair of glasses, even though she has good vision.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her hair reaches down to her thighs.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Being the president of the Occult Research Club, she is always willing to listen to Issei and her friends and the Student Council.
  • Rebellious Princess: She's Heir Apparent to the great devil House Gremory, and little sister of one of the four Satans. Kings are supposed to hang back and command their pieces. Rias prefers to mix it in — and it's not a good thing, because a team loses if their King goes down. Both she and Sairaorg are scolded for this.
  • Red Baron: She is known as the "Crimson-Haired Ruin Princess".
  • Red Is Heroic: She is one of the main heroes who has distinctive crimson hair.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She is the Red Oni to Akeno and Sona's Blue Oni; Akeno and Sona are the more logical and cool-headed ones while Rias has a bit more of a passionate personality.
  • Risking the King: Being a powerful devil with destruction magic is a double-edged sword when it puts the leader in harm's way. Happens literally in ratings games, where a manpower shortage and her reluctance to let her peerage suffer for her sake lead her to get involved quite quickly. Best shown during the first Rating Game of the series, where her strategy is a glorified diversion so she can take on the enemy king directly.
  • School Idol: Declared as the beauty of Kuoh Academy.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: She's willing to be naked in front of her servants, especially towards Issei. While Issei was freaking out and his mother seemed stunned, her response when she walked in on them naked in bed was a polite "good morning" without trying to cover herself up.
  • She Is the King: Using Chess Motifs, Rias is considered a King because she's the most important person in the Rating Game.
  • She's Got Legs: Her outfits often show her long legs.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Tsubaki and Kiba.
  • Shout-Out Theme Naming: Ichiei Ishibumi says that her given name comes from... Garchomp's Japanese name (Gaburias). The connection between a female Devil and a draconic Landshark is up to interpretation.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: With Issei in Volume 11. To the point that they forget people are watching them.
  • Squishy Wizard: She's got awesome magical attack power, but she's terrible at taking hits.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She stands at 172 cm/5'8'' tall, is considered attractive by everyone else, and is also the club's resident Ms. Fanservice.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She greatly resembles her mother Venelana in her later years, but with her father Zeoticus's hair and eye color.
  • Team Mom: Seriously, she is more of a mother to her servants than a "master" proper.
  • Top Wife: Issei is open about his desire of having a harem, but Rias is generally acknowledged to be the one to hold the title of his "legal wife" and immutable favorite. This doesn't stop the other girls from trying to usurp the position.
  • Torpedo Tits: Her "Oppai Beam", the ability to project a red light from her breasts, which recharges Issei's energy. Each use of this power causes her breasts to temporarily shrink in size, which makes Issei cry even though it's sometimes necessary. Her breast size will restore itself after a few days of rest.
  • Training from Hell: She makes Issei undergo one of these, by forcing him to run as fast as she can and stretching his body to the limit.
  • Tranquil Fury: Before Issei gives a Curb-Stomp Battle to Diodora.
    Issei: May I?!?
    Rias: Go ahead.
  • Unrealistic Black Hole: Her Extinguished Star technique, named after the origin of black holes as the result of a star with significant mass burning out. It creates a Sphere of Destruction that sucks in and thoroughly disintegrates even tough-scaled Evil Dragons.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Harm Issei, and Rias will vaporize you.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Camels, actually, according to a short story. One would have to be knowledgeable about the Ars Goetia to understand exactly why this is so funny. note
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Her hair is referred to variously as being either scarlet or crimson rather than a natural shade of red.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: In Volume 6, she wears thigh-high black stockings while wearing her devil outfit to seduce Issei.

    Asia Argento

Sister/President Asia Argento

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dxd_06_2301.jpg

Role: Bishop
Species: Human / Reincarnated Devil
Voiced by: Azumi Asakura (Japanese) and Chloe Daniels (English)

Lord. Can you please listen to my wish? Please protect Ise-san forever. Also... Please allow me to continue living with Ise-san...

A former nun who Issei found and befriended while she was looking for a church in town. As a member of the Roman Catholic Church, she was able to heal everyone who was injured. However, after healing the devil Diodora Astaroth, Asia becomes a heretic and goes into exile until she meets Issei. When Asia is killed by Raynare, Rias revives her as her Bishop and continues to use her healing powers.

  • Alliterative Name: Asia Argento. Gamebreaking points for having the same initials as her Japanese voice actress.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Asia loves everyone. Even when she was still a human, she didn't resent Devils and treated everyone equally, regardless of what they were. Azazel comments that this could be a potential drawback to her long-distance healing powers, as she probably wouldn't have the heart to ignore her enemies' injuries.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: The Church exiled her was when she was discovered to heal angels, humans and devils such as Diodora.
  • The Aloner: She becomes a hermit in her backstory after being exiled from the Church, using her powers for healing others.
  • Amusing Injuries: Apparently her nun training is still pretty well-ingrained. If she's relieved, she usually says something like "Thank God" followed by a whimper of pain since devils cannot pray. However, there's really no excuse for her trying to read The Bible repeatedly even though it has the same effect.
  • Armor-Piercing Slap: Delivers an awesome one towards Diodora when he insulted Issei.
  • Babies Ever After: In the future, she has a daughter with Issei, named Airi.
  • Back from the Dead: She is killed during the removal of her sacred gear at the end of Volume 1, but is revived, and subsequently added to the Occult Research Club, by Rias shortly afterwards. This is common knowledge.
  • Barrier Warrior: She becomes one in volume 20. When the Fafnir sacred gear goes balance breaker, Rizevim's most powerful attacks can't get through, and he has to flee from a very, very pissed off Issei.
  • Bathtub Bonding: The anime openly shows her being the first girl in Ise's harem to bathe with him, at her request no less. Issei's mom walks in on them and gets the wrong idea...
"Honey! We're going to be seeing our grandchild soon!"
  • Betty and Veronica: After Rias moved to the Hyoudou residence in Volume 2, she was the Betty to Rias's (and later Akeno and Xenovia) Veronica.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Made pacts with Four mass-produced evil dragons, which was only possible for Evil Gods.
  • Breast Expansion: In Volume 23, Issei explicitly states that Asia's boobs has grown to Irina and Xenovia's size. Justified, since Asia is still in the later parts of a woman's growth stage (where it usually ends at early twenties).
  • Burn the Witch!: Asia was exiled as The Heretic when she was discovered to be able to heal not only angels and humans, but also devils thanks to Diodora.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: It starts to show up a lot more after Rias moves in with him and her in his parents' house. As a result, if Asia sees Rias doing something perverted, she'll attempt to join in. For example, if she sees Rias naked in bed with Issei, she'll start stripping off her clothes as well. She's generally too mild-mannered to start any actual conflict, though.
  • Club President: She replaces Rias as the club's president at the end of Volume 19.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Gets better as she becomes more exposed to the world.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Asia is lucky that Vali and his group are around at the Dimension Gap searching for Gogmagog, otherwise she would have died.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: In her and Koneko's spinoff manga.
  • Damsel in Distress: Twice in fact. The first time was when Twilight Healing was taken away from her and the second time was when Diodora held her hostage. Because of her tendency to become this, Issei and Xenovia eventually made it their vow to preemptively crush everything that will pose a threat to her. Asia's future self has also been cursed by Loki to grow weaker every day, with the kids coming back to both stop him and find a way to rescue her.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was abandoned by her parents when she was a baby at a church doorstep. She was raised in that church and sometime during her childhood, she gained the ability to use her Twilight Healing. Unfortunately, when she was discovered to be able to heal not only angels and humans but also devils, she got branded a heretic and was excommunicated. Said devil, Diodora Astaroth, reappears in Volume 6 to try and steal Asia away from Issei.
  • Disney Death: In Volume 6, she is sent to the dimensional gap by Shalba Beelzebub, a member of the Old Satan Faction. While this provokes Issei into giving Shalba a Curb-Stomp Battle, she is rescued by Vali, who happened upon her body while traversing the void.
  • Doorstop Baby: According to her backstory, her parents left her behind at a church doorstep.
  • The Exile: Asia is exiled from the Church when she heals Diodora. Turns out that Diodora planned this from the beginning.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Diodora was rescued by Asia when she first meets him. Too bad it was all part of Diodora's schemes.
  • First Kiss: Asia shares her first kiss with Issei.
  • Foreign Fanservice: She's from Italy.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: The childish one.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic, natch.
  • Friendless Background: Before meeting Issei, Asia laments that she doesn't have any friends.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Fits the trope to a T. Sweet, innocent, pure-hearted and a faithful Catholic.
  • Happily Adopted: Sort of. There's no formal adoption, but everyone acts like Issei's parents are her actual parents, and Issei spends several volumes trying to force himself to think of her as his sister due to feeling incredibly guilty over not being able to save her from Raynare before ultimately giving up on it. Rias even holds the majority of the group back for "clean-up" during a battle in Volume 20 and orders Issei and Asia to go save his parents alone on the grounds that the parents should be saved by their son and daughter.
  • Healing Hands: She can heal allies at a long distance. If she's near an enemy, the healing aura will just dissolve. She doesn't utilize the Reverse method because it would be risky for the Twilight Healing user (that and she's surrounded by one hell of a Badass Crew anyway).
  • The Heretic: She was excommunicated from the Church after Diodora tricked her into healing him.
  • The Hermit: She retreated into complete isolation after being expelled from the Church, using her powers to help people.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.:
    • She goes into a major one when she is exiled for healing Diodora.
    • In volume 3, she has a similar reaction when she realizes that God Is Dead.
  • Hime Cut: Has this hairstyle, despite being Italian, not Japanese. It fits her gentle and humble personality.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Thankfully Issei, Rias and their friends are there for her.
  • Image Song: Kagiri Naku Junsui ni Chikai Daten
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: Is hovering between this when she doesn't realize there's a problem with getting naked in a particular situation and a Shameless Fanservice Girl who fully comprehends what she's doing but does it anyway to achieve her goals.
  • Instant Expert: Picks up demon magic with just a few lessons from Akeno. Then again, it seems to follow a similar process to Twilight Healing, which she's been using all her life.
  • Like Brother and Sister: She's more or less regarded as Issei's adoptive sister, and Issei frequently talks himself out of intimacy with her as if they're biologically related.
  • Marry Them All: She is the first of the haremettes to bring up the subject of polygamy, as Rias is moving into the Hyoudou residence (although she's talking to herself and Issei just overhears her, and, in typical Issei fashion, doesn't know why she's talking about it). He finally proposes to her toward the end of Volume 23, one volume after proposing to Rias.
  • Meaningful Name: Her surname is Italian for "silver", as in silver crosses. She wears one in her introductory arc before being revived as a devil.
  • The Medic: Her role in Ria's peerage is to heal her teammates.
  • Nice Girl: Asia is probably one of the nicest devils in the underworld: a special has her thinking up ways to be crueler befitting her new demonic nature, and she comes up with such unforgivable things as stealing milk from the neighbors, switching shoes in shoeboxes, and ignoring erasers that people drop. Even these are enough to bring her to tears and make her start begging God for forgiveness.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Her healing powers made an easy target for Diodora to have her become a heretic.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Her healing of Diodora turns out to be a trap for Asia to be exiled from the Church.
  • No Pronunciation Guide: In the dub, Issei's father pronounces it the way one says it the English manner (AY-sha), while she corrects him in that it's AH-zyah.
  • No Social Skills: Doesn't know how to make orders from a fast-food chain. Though she gets better over time.
  • Number Two: She is this within the harem, that even Akeno gives her that position; though knowing her fetish for affairs it serves her own purposes. In the EX future, she's even the second one to give birth to Issei's child and his first daughter.
  • One Head Taller: With Issei, who is 170 cm/5'7'', while she's only 155 cm/5'1''.
  • Parental Substitute: Serves as a mother figure to Issei's future children.
  • Playing Card Motifs: In the ending theme of the Season 1 anime, Asia is shown as the Joker, like Issei.
  • Power at a Price: For Fafnir to follow her instructions, he just needs a treasure. Unfortunately for Asia, it's her panties.
  • Raised Catholic: She was raised in a church and is a faithful Catholic even after being reincarnated as a Devil.
  • Rank Up: After Rias's graduation, she becomes the President of the Occult Research Club.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her hair goes past her waist.
  • Shoo Out the Clowns: Issei has Asia stay behind as he leaves to the underworld to duel with Riser at the end of volume 2.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Some scanlations often use "Aashia" and "Ashia". Some early promotional material didn't help solve this issue either until they resolved it with her current name.
  • Summon Magic: This is what Azazel advises to Asia so she could catch up with the rest of the team. So he gives her Fafnir. Later, her daughter inherited the Dragon King after her mother was cursed by Loki during his time travels.
  • Supreme Chef: Out of all the harem, Asia is believed to be the best in cooking.
  • Tender Tears: She's quite prone to crying, the reasons ranging from her comrades getting hurt to jealousy over other girls (particularly Rias) making advances on Issei.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Despite being reincarnated as a Devil, Asia still believes in God and follows His teachings such as praying to Him and reading the Bible.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Xenovia's tomboy.
  • Touched by Vorlons: Is blessed by Ophis to be able to make pacts with Dragons; the first is Fafnir. (Rassei doesn't count as he is a Familiar).
  • Tsundere: Not her, her breasts! Yes, Issei used his new ability to hear what a girl's breasts are saying.
  • Undying Loyalty: After falling in love with Issei, Asia swears that she will always stand by Issei's side forever, and in demon years that is in the thousands. She declares she will join Issei's Peerage when he becomes a High-Class Devil. And she does upon his promotion in Volume 22!
  • White Magician Girl: Fits the trope to a T: profusely compassionate and specializes in healing her teammates.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: After her excommunication, Asia is unable to return to the Church because of Diodora's actions.

    Akeno Himejima

Vice-President Akeno Himejima

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dxd_5_4179.jpg

Role: Queen
Species: Human-Fallen Angel / Reincarnated Devil
Voiced by: Shizuka Ito (Japanese), Teri Rogers (seasons 1 and 2), Kelly Angel (season 3) (English)

"You look so hot when you're being pleasured, I'm dying to know what you look like writhing in pain~"

Rias's confidante, subordinate and fellow member of the Occult Research Club, Akeno is a half-human, half-fallen angel hybrid. Her mother, Shuri Himejima, was a Shinto priest and her father, Baraqiel, is a Fallen Angel. After her mother's death at the hands of Akeno's relatives, she went into exile. When Rias discovers Akeno, she reincarnates the latter as a devil and she eventually becomes the vice-president of the ORC.

  • The Ace: She is quite skilled and adaptable in combat, to the point that some of the other characters are fearful of facing her due to her abilities as well as her queen ranking.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Begins to call Issei, like Irina, "darling" after his match against Baraqiel.
  • The Aloner: She became a hermit after enduring the death of Shuri in her backstory.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: As Vice-President of the Occult Research Club, she is able to take down enemies singlehandedly.
  • Babies Ever After: In the future she has a son with Issei, named Kurenai. Interestingly enough, she is also the first haremette to have a baby.
  • Badass in Charge: She fills in a Cadre position in the Grigori organisation thirty years later, as shown in EX.
  • Bedmate Reveal: At the beginning of Volume 5, Akeno enters Issei's bedroom and reveals herself under his blanket, naked as usual.
  • Berserk Button: Akeno's childhood was partially destroyed when Baraqiel wasn't around to rescue Shuri from being murdered by her own family. So despite inheriting his masochist side, she hates Baraqiel with a passion. At least until they reconcile in volume 7.
  • Blood Knight: Enjoys combat a little too much for comfort.
  • Bunny Girl: Dressed up as one to attract Issei's clones. Naturally, they all fall for it, hook, line and sinker.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: One of the reasons she joined Rias's group. She called Baraqiel out for not being able to save Shuri and is unwilling to forgive him.
  • Casual Kink: Yes, she likes BDSM.
  • Catch-Phrase: "Oh, my."
  • Cat Fight: She does this with Rias a lot once she falls for Issei too.
  • Combat Sadomasochist: She takes a great deal of pleasure from inflicting pain on others, and her primary method of doing this is in her combat support role as Rias Gremory's Queen.
  • Cool Big Sis: To the Occult Research Group and by extension, to the Academy.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Shuri's death at the hands of her relatives led to her becoming disillusioned with the Fallen Angels, including Azazel. She eventually reconciles with them by the time volume 7 rolls around.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Oh ye gods. Her's is possibly the worst of the bunch. Her mother Shuri was killed by her own relatives from the Himejima Clan when she was a child. Akeno called on Baraqiel for not being able to protect Shuri. After Shuri's death, she stayed with her mother's relative before being kicked out due to her Fallen Angel blood. Without food or money and finding herself unable to go home again, Akeno went into exile and journeyed throughout Japan using her skills to purify evil spirits that she learned from her mother in order to survive, doing so for a year and a half. When she stumbled into a certain town, Akeno indirectly saved a human that was contracted with a Devil from the Gremory Clan. Fearing that the Devil would kill her due to her Fallen Angel heritage, Akeno decided to hide from them. Later, while trying to leave the town, Akeno was suddenly attacked again by her relatives who came to kill her. Before her great-uncle could land the decisive blow, Rias and her father's Bishop, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, appeared and talked Akeno's family out of killing her. Akeno then moved into the Gremory Palace.
  • Dissonant Serenity: How could she be giggling after killing someone?!
  • The Dividual: With Rias in nature. From narrative perspective is clear that they are intended to work as an indivisible combo for all kind of actions. Yes, even (or maybe especially) that ones.
  • Does Not Like Men: She is implied by Rias to hate the other sex (except Issei) during their Cat Fight in Volume 4. Considering her Dark and Troubled Past and her strained relationship with Baraqiel, this is understandable.
  • Dominatrix: Invokes this for some of her contracted 'clients'.
  • Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Played for Drama at the start of Volume 12, following Issei's (temporary) death. Played for Laughs in the Hot Springs short story, when she walks in on Grayfia and Issei, coming to the assumption that she has a "real affair" with him, and drops on the floor with hollow eyes.
  • Elemental Powers
    • Shock and Awe: She can zap enemies with her lighting.
    • Light 'em Up: Her Holy Lightning, which she inherited from her father. She initially hates using these powers until Issei convinces her otherwise.
  • The Exile: The double blow of losing Shuri and calling Baraqiel out for failing to save her mother (which according to Azazel, he feels responsible for) caused her to go into exile for nearly two years, disappearing from almost everything except for purifying evil spirits. However, after healing a devil belonging to the Gremory family, Rias would soon find her.
  • Eyes Always Shut: She sometimes keeps her eyes closed.
  • First Kiss: With Issei in volume 7.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: The pretty one.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric/Sanguine hybrid.
  • Hair Antennae: A rather unique variant in which they slope backwards, rather than forwards.
  • Hair Decorations: She has an orange ribbon on her head.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Half-human, half-fallen angel (technically a Nephilim).
  • The Hermit: After losing Shuri at the hands of her own relatives, she retreated into complete isolation for one year.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.:
    • She undergoes this in her backstory when Shuri gets killed by her own relatives, forcing her into hiding. To twist the knife further, one of her relatives is her great-uncle.
    • After Issei's (temporary) death, she lies on the sofa, arms limp, devoid of life in her eyes and not responding to Kiba's attempts to talk to her.
  • Heroic Seductress: Rias makes a comment that Akeno would make an excellent succubus. Noted that she only desires to sex up Issei.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: She refers to Rias as her best friend.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite being a tease-happy sadomasochist on the surface, Akeno is surprisingly innocent when it comes to having a true relationship, which stems from both her terrible past and dutiful personality.
  • Hope Spot: Gave one towards the Issei clones before decimating them with her magic.
  • Human Mom, Non-Human Dad: Her mother was a human woman, while her father was a Fallen Angel.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: An odd variant; while Akeno prefers being dominant in S&M sessions, much like in her bonding/reconciliation moment with her father, Issei is the only one allowed to see her masochistic side when the time comes.
  • I Hate You, Vampire Dad: Or in her case, "I Hate You, Fallen Angel Dad". She clearly hated Baraqiel for not being able to save Shuri when the latter was killed.
  • Image Song: Kurokami BEGIN TALE
  • Informed Attribute: Despite Rias insisting that Does Not Like Men and therefore shouldn't be fighting with her over Issei, the only non-antagonistic males she has shown overt hostility toward are Azazel and her father, which has more to do with them being Fallen Angels than their sex.
  • Instant Awesome: Just Add Dragons!: After taking in so much of Issei's ki from sucking all that power whenever Issei needs to have his arm back to human form, her powers have evolved to the point that they are dragon-shaped. Let's just say mayhem ensues more now.
  • It Runs in the Family: Technically, Akeno is a sadomasochist, meaning she can switch between being the giver or taker depending on the situation. She got the masochism from her father, and the sadism from her mother. She also inherited the Holy Lightning from her father.
  • It's Personal: She wants to exact revenge on Baraqiel for indirectly leaving her mother to die.
  • The Lancer: In as much as Rias is The Hero due her status as a Deuteragonist, Akeno is this. She's always smiling, especially in combat; she takes actions Rias would, sometimes without telling her beforehand to avoid the debate that would ensue, and she's never above flirting with Issei to get a rise out of Rias, especially after they've both fallen for him.
  • Lecherous Licking: She elevates this trope into an art form.
  • Lineage Comes from the Father: She inherited her Shock and Awe powers and Fallen Angel wings from Baraqiel.
  • Long-Lost Relative:She is related to Tobio Ikuse by blood since his grandma was a memeber of Himejima clan, making him her distant cousin.
  • Marry Them All: Zigzagged in her case. Baraqiel criticizes Issei during their Rating Game match in Volume 22 for choosing Rias over Akeno, prompting Issei to declare that he will make all of the women who love him happy and shout out that he loves Akeno to the whole stadium (mirroring how he declares his love for Rias in Volume 10). Whether or not this counts as a proposal is debatable, as he only singles Akeno out because the whole thing was brought up by her father, but Akeno herself later says that marriage isn't necessary (because she thinks affairs are sexy, and you can't have much of an affair with your own husband...)
  • Meaningful Name: Himejima means "Island Princess" and is also the name of a place in Japan.
  • Miko: Dresses as one when it's time to get really serious. She inherited it from her mother.
  • Missing Mom: Akeno's mother, Shuri, died during her childhood.
  • The Mistress: What she wants to be for Issei. She actively pursues this. Rias is very aware of her "plan" and is not happy. She is crushed when it seems that Grayfia is one for Issei.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Female Fallen Angels are renowned for having very seductive bodies and Akeno's naturally sexy disposition, plus having the largest breast size in the series so far, only enhances this fact. Azazel himself stated that Akeno was particularly seductive even for a Fallen Angel.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: A miko who is also a Fallen Angel and a Devil.
  • Nocturnal Emission: She tends to dream of her and Issei having sex.
  • Number Two: She is the first servant and friend Rias made in the human world, as well as the Occult Research Club's Vice-President.
  • Onee-sama: Referred to as one of the "Two Great Ladies of Kuoh Academy".
  • Passing the Torch: After Akeno's graduation, Kiba replaces her as the club's vice president.
  • Playing Card Motifs: In the ending theme of the Season 1 anime, Akeno is shown as the Queen.
  • Please Don't Leave Me: Says this tearfully to Issei after seeing him return from near-death.
  • Purple Eyes: She has violet eyes, which hints at her being half-fallen angel.
  • Put the "Laughter" in "Slaughter": She has a habit of laughing or giggling while engaging in violence. But, most prominently, when Issei offers to take her out on a date as a reward for defeating an opponent, Akeno's immediate reaction is to explode in power while giggling uncontrollably.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Has very long black hair, usually tied in a long ponytail, reaching all the way down to her legs.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She has black hair and white skin.
  • Red Baron: "Priestess of Thunder", and later "Priestess of Lightning" after mastering Holy Lightning.
  • The Resenter: She resents her father Baraqiel for his greatest failure to save Shuri from dying.
  • Revenge: She hates her father, Baraqiel, for not preventing Shuri's death. As a result, Akeno joins Rias to avenge her mother's death. Thankfully, she got over it by the end of volume 7.
  • Romanticized Abuse: A bonafide sadist, unless it's Issei, at which point she becomes the masochist for him and only him.
  • Sex Is Violence: As noted under Blood Knight above, Akeno really enjoys combat. Some of the expressions she wears in the manga go well beyond "suggestive".
    • This is one of the few things that had to be bowdlerised in the anime. During the first fight against a stray devil, Rias tell Akeno to back off when she starts torturing it. In the novel, Rias just stands back and waits for Akeno to "calm down".
  • Sexophone: Her leitmotif in the anime is a seductive saxophone piece. This is nearly played straight in Season 2, when Issei has to have his excess dragon ki 'removed' by Akeno. As soon as she enters the room, the music starts... Plenty of sucking to be had.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Akeno, being half-Fallen Angel, is very much in touch with her perverted side and has no problem showing off her body in general, but especially for Issei.
  • She's Got Legs: Along with Rias, her outfits show her long legs.
  • Skinship Grope: Gropes Rias at the swimming pool of the Gremory household. She also gives quite a few to Issei as well.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Many of Akeno's relatives are appalled by the discovery that Akeno is half-Fallen Angel.
  • Smug Super: Always puts up a smile in battle.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: Even though she's definitely one of the good guys.
  • Spit-Trail Kiss: In the first season's second short, to Issei; bonus points for being a CPR. It was All Just a Dream. Which later happens in Volume 22
  • Stepford Smiler: She is usually smiling. However, bring up her Dark and Troubled Past, or harm Issei, and she'll electrocute you.
  • Stripperiffic: Her Fallen Angel Mode has skimpy clothes.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: She looks almost exactly like her mother Shuri, especially in her later years.
  • Tareme Eyes: Her eyes are large and droopy.
  • The Tease: Oh so much. As this is her default setting, even normally innocent teasing can taken as flirty. Azazel noted that for someone with Fallen Angel blood in her, a race that is naturally very seductive already, she is extremely seductive.
    • As her love for Issei blossoms, she eventually no longer teases him, but flirts with a genuine desire for furthering her relationship with him.
  • Verbal Tic: She often speaks with "Ara ara~" (Oh my~).
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Though not his "Official Girlfriend" like Rias, Akeno will be prepared to zap you if Issei gets injured.
  • Virgin Power: Took advantage of this to lure the Unicorn go near her. She then smacks said unicorn and the group takes the unicorn's horn.
  • Walking the Earth: After Shuri's death, Akeno use her powers to help people while traveling throughout Japan, and she heals a devil that belongs to the Gremory Clan.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Look for yourself. (slightly NSFW)
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: When not in sadist mode, Akeno comes off as a ideal Japanese woman due to her long black hair and gentle smile. Not to mention she is a great cook like Asia and Rias. Akeno is also polite and devoted to Issei and her team. However, Akeno has a fragile personality as she "depend" on men due to her sad past.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: She is a Human/Fallen Angel hybrid turned Demon.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: After Shuri's death, Akeno finds herself unable to return to her clan due to her Fallen Angel blood.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: In one of the anime endings, her hair is changed to dark blue.
  • You're Not My Father: Unlike Issei, who easily forgives Azazel for his past actions, Akeno is unwilling to forgive Baraqiel for not being able to save Shuri and refuses to acknowledge her relation to him. Fortunately with Issei's help, they reconcile by Volume 7.

    Yuto Kiba

Vice-President Yuto Kiba

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dxd_02_3517.jpg

Role: Knight
Species: Modified Human / Reincarnated Devil
Voiced by: Kenji Nojima (Japanese) and Sean O'Connor (English)

I seriously won’t know what will happen when I am within this group.

The school prince of Kuoh Academy and Issei's self-proclaimed best friend, Yuto was the lone survivor of a failed project which used a group of children to wield holy swords, and swore revenge on those who disposed him and his friends.

  • Achilles' Heel: He realizes that if his legs are damaged, he'll lose overall combat performance. And it shows during his fight against Siegfried.
  • Ambiguously Gay: A lot of his later interaction with Issei puts his true sexuality in question (at least in the latter's head).
  • An Arm and a Leg: In Volume 12, Siegfried cuts off his left arm, but Koneko, Ravel, and Asia help reattach it.
  • Apologetic Attacker: Apologizes to his enemies whenever Issei breaks out a new perverted technique, much to the latter's frustration.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: He is a Master Swordsman and eventually gets promoted to the Club's Vice-President by the end of Volume 20.
  • The Atoner: For participating in the Holy Sword Project in which his friends were killed during the experiments.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: In one Volume 13 short story, to Issei's horror, he realizes "Yumi" is his type of girl.
  • Beauty Mark: He has one under his left eye.
  • Berserk Button: Kiba's childhood was destroyed when he took part in the Holy Sword Project, and he really hated the holy swords with a passion. He grows out of it towards the end of volume 3.
  • Bishōnen: He's the pretty boy of the group. Lampshaded by Issei himself, who nicknames him "Pretty Boy Prince".
  • Bond One-Liner: Delivers an epic one to Freed, after impaling the latter's head with his sword.
Kiba: "You can continue howling to the Grim Reaper in Hell."
  • Broken Ace: Has lots of fangirls compared to the unpopular Issei, plus he is intelligent and quite powerful. Despite his cool appearance, it is shown in Volume 3 that Kiba has an obsession with revenge, which makes him hot-tempered and irrational.
  • Broken Bird: Male example, in which he still feels the pain of being experimented upon back during his childhood, even well into adolescence.
  • Broken Hero: He is a calm, confident and skillful Knight. His perpetual smile and collected demeanor hide the fact that he is the only survivor of the Church's Excalibur experiments, who were so brutal that left him traumatized and killed all his friends when he was a mere child and to top it off, he is an artificial human without sense of self-worth; he is so deeply loyal to Rias simply because he has nothing else to hold on, something that Rias knows but is unable to fix. He admits to it in the Kokabiel arc. Though it gets kinda fixed with Issei and Koneko's friendship (with a healthy dose of Rias's Tough Love to help).
  • Bros Before Hoes: This is the counterargument to Kiba's Ho Yay tendencies. May cross with Bromantic Foil.
  • Chick Magnet: He's popular with the girls at Kuoh Academy.
  • Childhood Friends: With Tosca after he is reunited with her as one of the survivors of the Holy Sword project.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: His participation in "The Holy Sword Project" caused him to become disillusioned with the Holy Swords in general.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was originally called Isaiah, and was taken in by the Church and was chosen to be a part of a project called "The Holy Sword Project" supervised by Valper Galilei which led to the deaths of all of his friends and other participants when Valper decided to eliminate them, resulting in the latter's hatred of the Holy Swords namely Excalibur. After successfully escaping the facility with the help of his friends, he finally succumbed to the poison he inhaled. Lying on the ground, he was then found by Rias.
  • Defrosting Ice King: During his initial days as Rias's servant, Isaiah was distrustful of Rias and all those related to her. One day, when giving tribute to his deceased friends, he was confronted by a stray Devil and fought a hard battle until his master, Okita, came to rescue him. After this event, he finally opened up to Rias and took up the name Rias thought of specifically for him, "Yuuto Kiba".
  • Deuteragonist: Half of the series's point of view is through his eyes whenever Issei is not available.
  • Dual Wielding: And sometimes, triple wielding.
  • Elemental Powers: His swords can do this.
  • An Ice Person: Flame Delete
  • Casting a Shadow: Holy Eraser
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: His holy demonic swords, which are compared to a glitch.
    • Took this trope literally in Volume 12 when he briefly wields Issei's Ascalon, a holy sword, and Siegfried's Gram, a demonic sword.
  • Handicapped Badass: Had one of his arms sliced off by Siegfried. He still kept on going, especially after Siegfried pushed his Berserk Button.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Thanks to one Dark and Troubled Past.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: It is noted that Kiba does show some interest in the opposite sex, he just considers his friendship with Issei more important.
  • Idiot Hair: Easy to miss, but he does have a strand.
  • I Owe You My Life: After Issei saves him.
  • It's Personal: He wants to avenge his friends deaths due to them being killed in the Holy Sword project.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Has this relationship with Koneko.
  • Master Swordsman: He attained the title of Shihan (Assistant Grand Master) courtesy of his mentor, Okita Soji's Tennen Rishin Ryu.
  • Meaningful Name: Kiba's name is the Japanese word for "Horse Rider", given that knights in Chess are represented by horses.
  • Mentor Archetype: He trains Issei's children in the future, most notably Zen and Ex.
  • Me's a Crowd: His second Sacred Gear when it was known that a user only gets to use one Sacred Gear at most.
  • The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: While Yuto is very Ambiguously Gay as a male, when he gender bends to Yumi, the attraction towards Issei is that much more apparent.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Unlike Issei, Yuuto's body is very muscular and fit from the start, plus he wears a pretty tight speedo when swimming or at the beach.
  • Nice Guy: Despite Issei's initial rudeness towards him, he still is as polite and encourages Issei more so than the rest of the Occult Club with the exception of Rias.
  • Oblivious to Love: He's as clueless as your standard shounen protagonist.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Issei first fired his Dragon Shot on him when they were training. He made it. His wooden sword? Not so much.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: "Yuuto Kiba" is the name Rias gave him, he didn't have a name before that. Before that, he is called "Izaiya/Isaiah" as his Code Name during the Holy Sword Project stint.
  • Only Sane Man: When club members were spying on Issei's date with Akeno. He was the only one who didn't bother with ridiculous Paper-Thin Disguise (like a hat with sunglasses, or wrestler mask) or trying to remain hidden, and waved a hand at him as if he was saying "sorry about this".
  • Parental Substitute: Issei's future children look up to him as a father figure due to always being there for them while their actual father is a celebrity and never home.
  • Playing Card Motifs: In the ending theme of the Season 1 anime, there's a playing card theme, and Kiba is shown as the Ace of Spades.
  • The Promise: Issei made him promise that if one of them dies, then they'll have to fight harder for the sake of the one who died. And then Issei did die (temporarily), making Kiba fulfill that promise.
  • Rank Up: After Akeno's graduation, Kiba takes her place as the ORC's vice-president.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The blue to Issei's red.
  • Revenge: His reason for becoming a devil under Rias's service is to find and destroy all the holy swords.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Kiba can become very irrational when angry, to the point it severely hinders his skills. After learning his lesson, he keeps Issei away from this trope in Volume 20 when Qlippoth kidnap his parents and brutalize Ophis.
  • Ron the Death Eater: A very rare In-Universe example. Darkness Knight Fang, the Big Bad of the "Boob Dragon" show, is based upon Kiba.
  • School Idol: Known as the school prince of Kuoh Academy.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!: He decides to escape "The Holy Sword Project" once his friends are killed. By volume 3, he decides to leave Rias's team behind to avenge his friends' death.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: His Sacred Gear, Sword Birth, allows him to create numerous Demon Swords of different attributes according to his will.
  • Stepford Smiler: Throughout the first part of volume 12.
  • Switching P.O.V.: Occurs in several chapters of the Light Novels where the story is told from his viewpoint over Issei's; the switches are usually for chapters that aren't titled Life.
  • Unwitting Pawn: For "The Holy Sword Project", which involved all of his friends getting killed trying to wield the swords.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Let's have a checklist: excluding Asia, his best friend is the incarnation of destructive power and all-around badass, his president and vice-president can mow down armies, his fellow club member can create explosions from her BFS, his two juniors, one capable of punching somebody so hard they get knocked out and the other being able to stop time, and his teacher can bombard enemies with magic. Him? Sure he can create any kinds of swords from out of nothing, but other than that, he mostly uses his speed. And yet he's the second most powerful member of the group. He lampshades that he's the only technique user in a group full of power-types.
  • Wham Line: At the end of Volume 11.
Kiba: "That day, we lost Issei."
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: His Balance Breaker, Sword of Betrayer, is both a Holy and Demonic sword.

    Koneko Toujou

Koneko Toujou (born Shirone)

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dxd_03_1_9053.jpg

Role: Rook
Species: Nekomata / Reincarnated Devil
Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu (Japanese) and Jad Saxton (English)

...Are you thinking of lecherous stuff again, Ise-senpai?

School mascot of Kuoh Academy, Koneko is one of Rias's earliest members and a Nekomata. She's in the care of the House of Gremory. Her real name is Shirone and she is the sister of Kuroka, who killed their master in self-defense after being subjected to experiments.

  • A-Cup Angst: She reacts violently when Freed calls her a "little girl." She goes into a chilling Tranquil Fury when she hears Issei praise a demon plant which produces fruit that makes women's breasts bigger. She explains that she feels this way about herself when offering to restore Issei's lifespan with senjutsu via sex.
  • Afraid of Their Own Strength: She is afraid of using her Nekomata powers because she fears they will go out of control like it happened with her sister (or so she thinks).
  • Animal Jingoism: She has a cat motif, while Ravel has a bird motif; cats and birds generally get along poorly.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: In volume 3, she states that not being looked at pervertedly gives her complex feelings.
  • Babies Ever After: In the future, she has a daughter with Issei, named Shirayuki.
  • Badass Adorable: She may be adorable, but she has some fight left in her.
  • Berserk Button: Any act of perversion by Issei will immediately set her off. At first.
  • Big Eater: She's nearly always seen snacking, to the point people worry when she goes a whole train ride without a bite to eat. Despite this, she maintains a tiny frame. Those feats of insane strength must be pretty good at burning calories.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to her sister Kuroka's Cain.
  • Can't Catch Up: A major part of Volume 5, made worse by how the only way she feels she can catch up is to use her Nekomata powers which at the time she was too afraid to use.
  • Catch-Phrase: "You're the worst" whenever Issei reaches a new level of perversion.
  • Cats Are Snarkers: She may be a nekomata, but she has a sarcastic and witty personality.
  • Cat Girl: In thematic appearance as well as actual lineage.
  • Character Development: She used to get angry over any of Issei's perverted antics and reap Pervert Revenge Mode on him. Now she gets fussy only when his perverseness isn't directed towards her.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Can get jealous when Kuroka and Ravel get too close to Issei.
  • Crutch Character: She ends up as the weakest combat unit and eventually asks Kuroka for help to get stronger.
  • Cry Cute: The beginning of Volume 12, after a futile attempt to try to maintain her composure following Issei's temporary death.
  • Cute Bruiser: Don't let her cuteness fool you, she can still kick your ass when she has to.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: After losing her parents, she and her older sister, Kuroka, were later taken in by a Devil who reincarnated her sister as one of the members of his peerage. However, Kuroka's power as a Nekomata supposedly soon grew out of control, eventually causing her to kill her master and become a Stray Devil. Following the incident and the failed manhunt that came after, Shirone was sentenced to death by the Devils in hopes of preventing another incident like Kuroka's from happening. However, Sirzechs Lucifer protected her and left her under his sister Rias's care.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She has a dry wit and speaks in a deadpan tone.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Initially harsh to Issei, witnessing his determination and strength eventually helps her warm up to him, to the point where she falls in love with him and once suggested having sex with him.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Her reaction to Kuroka double-crossing her after she killed their abusive master is of utter shock.
  • Fantastic Arousal: Goes into heat just like a cat. Unusually for the trope, the fact this is her instinctively trying to get pregnant is actually addressed and, with her tiny frame, acknowledged as a Bad Thing.
  • Fantastic Slurs: She often calls Ravel a "fried chicken princess" to the latter's annoyance.
  • Four-Girl Ensemble: The mannish one.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic.
  • Frame-Up: She is framed as the person responsible for killing her former master and is sentenced to death. Only after Sirzechs's intervention does she become a member of the ORC.
  • Glacier Waif: Contrary to her small stature, her status as a Rook gives her specialization in brute force.
  • Hair Decorations: Wears a black cat-shaped hair clip on both sides of her hair.
  • Hair Intakes: Befitting her cat motif, her hairdo has a pair of "cat ears".
  • Heroic R.R.O.D.: Her Shirone mode counts as after a few minutes she is exhausted. Although Azazel claims that with time, it won't be a problem.
  • Hidden Depths: She's a fan of rapping and shows it off to Issei.
  • Image Song: Jounetsu-Unbalance
  • Intimate Healing: She does this for Issei in order to recover his lifespan. The fact that she does it happily is a sign of her growing feelings for him.
  • Jailbait Wait: Issei implements this on her for her own safety, because were she to have a child with him at her current size, it would spell disaster for her and their unborn child.
  • Like Brother and Sister: With Kiba.
  • Little Bit Beastly: In her Nekomata form, she grows a pair of white cat ears and a pair of matching white tails.
  • Little Miss Snarker: Mostly in regards to Issei's perversion.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • Koneko is a good name for a Cat Girl as it is Japanese for "kitten" (more literally "child cat"), while her surname means "castle", befitting her position as Rook.
    • Her real name, Shirone, means "White Sound", in reference to her hair and tail color.

    Xenovia Quarta

Xenovia Quarta

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xenovia_new_5682.jpg

Role: Knight
Species: Human / Reincarnated Devil
Voiced by: Risa Taneda (Japanese) and Lauren Landa (credited as "Ramona Newel") (English)

I will bring judgement upon you with my own hands, in the name of God.

Raised in the Roman Catholic Church as an exorcist, Xenovia Quarta wields the Holy Sword Durandal. Along with fellow exorcist Irina Shido, Xenovia travels to Kuoh Academy to retrieve the three Excalibur swords that were stolen by Kokabiel. After retrieving the swords, she is exiled from the church for discovering that God Is Dead and joins the Occult Research Club as a Knight. As a student of Kuoh Academy, she intends to become the academy's Student Council President.

  • The Ace: She's one of the smartest at her class much to Issei's surprise. This is more impressive since when she first started attending Kuoh, she wasn't literate note  and mentions pulling all-nighters so she can learn to read the classwork properly. In the future, she rose up her ante, becoming a headmistress of a cram school.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: By the time of volume 4, she is excommunicated from the Church for understandably learning that God Is Dead. Her status as a heretic is ultimately what leads to her reconciliation and friendship with Asia, who was equally considered one.
  • Amusing Injuries: Like Asia, she gets headaches whenever she tries to pray after reincarnating as a devil until Issei asks Michael to let the two do so without resistance.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: When Issei's clone uses Dress Break on her, she gets mad... because he didn't take advantage of her afterward.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: She is a badass swordswoman who eventually becomes the Student Council President and a headmistress of her own school.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Something Kiba notes that she really needs to get out of. Which finally happens in Volume 14.
  • The Atoner: After learning that God Is Dead, she atones for her misdeeds towards Asia and felt the need to become her friend.
  • Babies Ever After: In the future, she has a son with Issei, named Zen.
  • Badass Cape: Her white hooded cloak with gold and blue accents.
  • Badass Teacher: In EX, she teaches her students as their headmistress from time to time.
  • BFS: Durandal is a pretty big sword.
  • Big Sister Instinct: When Asia is taken by Diodora, she vaporizes two devils who got in her way.
  • Boyish Short Hair: She cut her hair short after a dangerous mission involving a vampire.
  • Broken Pedestal: She has a major case of this when she learns that God Is Dead the whole time and she is exiled by the Church.
  • Characterization Marches On: Her debut in Volume 3 portrayed her as a no-nonsense warrior in contrast to the more upbeat and friendly Irina. Later on, one of her defining traits is her bizarre world view.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Lacks a lot of common sense.
  • Contralto of Danger: Her normal voice, provided by both Risa Taneda in Japanese and Lauren Landa in English, is made more evident when she practiced "how to be a normal teenage girl"
Xenovia: (Voice several pitches higher than her usual coarse-and-masculine contralto) Let's get along, 'kay, Issei-kun!
Issei: That cutesey voice does not suit you!
Xenovia: (Switches straight back to her normal-unfeminine voice) I know, I tried to copy Irina, and it was so difficult.
  • Cool Big Sis: She becomes an older sister surrogate to Asia towards the end of Volume 3.
  • Cool Sword: Current wielder of Durandal.
  • Covert Pervert: The "pervert" part is undeniable. The "covert" part is at best paper-thin. During the short story "300 Isseis", when one of his clones (whom she thought was the real Issei) used Dress Break on her, she got angry not because she got stripped, but because he didn't do anything else to her.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Her initial rudeness to Asia, herself a former follower of God who was understandably exiled, causes Issei to snap when she attempts to kill Asia. Fortunately, she realizes the error of her ways and becomes an older sister surrogate to Asia after the latter forgives her at the end of Volume 3.
  • Ditzy Genius: Despite frequently spouting off incoherent lines, she's one of the best students in Issei's class.
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: She wastes no time in letting Issei know that she wants his genes. She has condoms on hand for whenever he wants to 'practice'.
  • Dual Wielding: Usually wields Durandal but sometimes she wields it alongside Ascalon whenever Issei lends it to her, and eventually with Excalibur. She eventually learns a technique that requires her to dual wield to use it, Cross Crisis.
  • Dumb Muscle: A debatably accurate accusation often leveled towards her, much to her annoyance. She lacks finesse or technique in combat, and just powers through, making her the exact opposite of dexterity-oriented Kiba. This leads to a hilarious subversion in Volume 14, when she starts using different Excaliburs. Kiba actually starts shedding tears of joy, and the attacking magicians are dumbstruck that the "power idiot" can use techniques.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She made a brief appearance in the post-credits of Season 1 during the announcement for NEW.
  • Easily Forgiven: By the end of Volume 3, Asia forgives Xenovia for her actions when they first met. However, it's averted for her relationship with the Church once she learns God Is Dead and the Church exiles her as The Heretic.
  • Education Mama: Her son Zen hinted that she becomes this in the future to the kids as well as being a headmistress, but is laxer compared to other examples since they are more sociable and fighting a war.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Accumulated a lot of fangirls during the Rating Games.
  • The Exile: She is exiled from the Church as a heretic for understandably learning the truth about God at the end of Volume 3.
  • Faith–Heel Turn: Subverted — even after Rias's team, she still retains her faith in God.
  • Fingerless Gloves: The opera variant in her church battle outfit.
  • Foreign Fanservice: Along with Asia, her nationality is Italian, according to official material.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Her church battle outfit.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric/Sanguine hybrid.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Although Xenovia isn't a villain, she is converted into a devil and joins the Occult Research Club after finding out the truth about God from Kokabiel.
  • Heel Realization: In the Volume 3 finale, she undergoes one after learning that God Is Dead and apologizes for her earlier actions towards Asia.
  • The Heretic: At the end of Volume 3, Xenovia is excommunicated from the Church after finding out that God Is Dead.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.: She goes through a brief one when she realizes that God Is Dead all along.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: She and Irina are BFFs, even after the former became a devil.
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: Her church battle outfit.
  • Important Haircut: Her hair was once long in the past, but after going through the vampire mission, she cuts her hair short.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: As Asia, she is hovering between this when she doesn't realize there's a problem with getting naked in a particular situation and a Shameless Fanservice Girl who fully comprehends what she's doing but does it anyway to achieve her goals.
  • In the Hood: Her cape features this.
  • Irony: Asia became a heretic due to her healing Diodora. By the end of volume 3, Xenovia herself becomes a heretic, this time for learning the truth about God.
  • Kick the Dog: In the first half of Volume 3, Xenovia refers to Asia as a witch and decides to kill her for being a Devil. Issei, being Issei, understandably doesn't take this well and essentially declares war on her and Irina.
  • The Lad-ette: As a result of being raised first and foremost as an exorcist. Her speech patterns are decidedly unfeminine compared to other girls in the series, and she's out of touch with what's considered girly activity.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: She always charges into battle before anyone else.
  • Leotard of Power: And has her sword to back it up.
  • Marry Them All: After Issei proposes to Rias and declares his love for Akeno in front of a crowd, she becomes determined to make him "take responsibility" for her, Irina, and Asia as well. She later proposes to him during a Rating Game match, and he accepts. Oddly, perhaps due to her Christian upbringing, her proposal is the first one to use conventional marriage terms; with Rias, he asks her to "lead the same life" as him, while Xenovia specifically asks to be his bride (or BRIIIIIIDDDDEEE).
  • Meaningful Name: Her first name is a misspelled version of Zenobia, the famous warrior-queen from Palmyra (now modern Syria). Her last name, Quarta, means "fourth" in Italian, Catalan, Latin, and Portuguese.
  • Mentor Archetype: She teaches her fellow students as a school headmistress by the time EX rolls around.
  • Morph Weapon: Knows how to use Mimic thanks to Irina.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution:
    • Done with any talks before the fight? She'll fire off the first blow before anyone else, much to Issei's consternation.
    • She really wanted to kill Diodora, but Shalba beat her to it.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She undergoes a minor one when she realizes how harsh she was towards Asia in Volume 3 after the battle is over and apologizes to Asia for it.
  • No Social Skills: Talks about condoms and having babies to Issei out loud in front of everybody. Needless to say, she doesn't have the slightest social grace due to her having grown up as a member of the Church.
  • Not So Different: In Volume 3, Xenovia calls Asia a witch due to the latter's excommunication from the Church for healing Devils. However, Xenovia comes to sympathize with Asia after the former ironically gets excommunicated from the church towards the end of the volume for knowing the truth about God, knowing all-too-well what it feels like to have those that you trust turn your backs on you.
  • Oh, Crap!: Xenovia is understandably shocked when Kokabiel reveals that God Is Dead at the end of Volume 3.
  • Only One Name: She was only referred to as Xenovia until her last name Quarta was revealed in Volume 19.
  • Pillar of Light: What happens when she combines Durandal with Ascalon.
  • Raised Catholic: Like Asia, she was also raised in a Catholic church, hence her lack of experience with the real world.
  • Rank Up: When Sona graduates, she becomes the Student Council President of Kuoh Academy.
  • Running Gag: Has a tendency to literally kick Issei out of bed when they (again, literally) sleep together.
  • Sensual Spandex: Her church battle outfit.
  • She Knows Too Much: She is excommunicated from the Church after learning that God Is Dead all along.
  • Shoot the Dog: She views killing Asia as this, given how devils are considered enemies of the Church and that she was considered a witch. Issei disagreed.
  • Skunk Stripe: She dyes one of her hair strands green after cutting it short.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Xenovia or Zenobia? (It's actually Zenovia, as written in katakana since it is the modern form of Zenobia. However, since Xenovia is the most popular within fan translations and the official subs, it sticks and becomes official)
  • Student Council President: The main reason why she wants to be a Dumbass No More. She takes Sona's place when she graduates by the end of Volume 19. In EX, Xenovia ups the ante by becoming a school headmistress.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: She blows up everything with her sword.
  • Token Religious Teammate: Share this role with Asia. Being a demon didn't stop her from being religious at all.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's the tomboy compared to Asia and Irina.
  • Too Many Belts: Has multiple belts on her legs, arms, under her breasts, and wears one as underwear. Gets taken Up to Eleven in one of the illustrator's artworks where she wears them as a swimsuit!
  • Undying Loyalty: Towards Issei, as she asks Issei to let her join his peerage when he becomes a High-Class Devil. Which she does upon his promotion in Volume 22.
  • Vapor Wear: Irina reveals that Xenovia doesn't have any undergarments in her uniform.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Apparently is afraid of her swordmaster-turned-Angel, as shown in her short story.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Xenovia is unable to return to the Church due to her excommunication.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has blue hair with a green fringe in front.

    Irina Shido

Irina Shido

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/irina_new_5025.jpg

Role: Ace of Spades
Species: Human / Reincarnated Angel
Voiced by: Maaya Uchida (Japanese) and Kristi Kang (English)

Amen!

Issei's childhood friend, Irina first appears in Volume 3, returning to Japan to look for the Excalibur swords alongside Xenovia. At first, she didn't like the idea that Issei is now a devil but comes to terms with later. After learning the truth that God Is Dead, she becomes an angel in the service of Michael under the designation of "Ace of Spades" and after Issei rescues Asia from Diodora, she joins the Occult Research Club.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Calls Issei "Darling".
  • Babies Ever After: In the future, she has a son with Issei, named Shin.
  • Berserk Button: She used to laugh it off, but now she gets upset when someone puts "Self-Proclaimed" in front of any of her titles. Especially angel and childhood friend.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Brings a projector that contains the Breast Dragon song Issei had to rehearse to snap him out of his Juggernaut Drive.
  • Black and White Morality: For a while, her thought process was "church good, heretics, fallen angels, and demons bad." It was to the point where she happily called Asia a heretic when they first met to Issei's anger. Fortunately, she learned to perceive more grays eventually.
  • Bokukko: Probably helped contribute to Issei's misconception about her gender.
  • Boyish Short Hair: As a child, as shown in the manga.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She is in love with her childhood friend Issei.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Like Asia and Xenovia, she doesn't understand the aspects of reality.
  • Comically Missing the Point: What does she say when she sees Issei groping both Xenovia and Asia?
Irina: "G... Go do it on a bed! This is too dirty, and the hygiene is terrible in this place!"
  • Cool Sword:
    • She uses an artificial version of Kiba's Holy-Demonic Sword.
    • She later gets Hauteclere, the sword wielded by the friend of Durandal's original wielder.
  • Fangirl: She and Issei used to be Super Sentai fans to the point she would pose just to mimic her favorite heroes. She's pleased when her childhood friend gets to have a TV series of his own.
  • First Kiss: She kissed Issei back when they were kids.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: In Volume 14, Issei comments on how he usually forgets that Irina really is his childhood friend, while Xenovia uses this as a chance to call Irina the self-proclaimed childhood friend. Later, despite her inner conflict between sleeping with him and refusing to become a fallen angel, she mentions that there is a way for her to sleep with him without her turning into one but on the condition that their thoughts must remain chaste, among a few other things, while Issei comments how impossible it would be for him to refrain from thinking lewdly while doing such a thing. Despite all of this Michael supports Irina's love for Issei, having gone so far as to create an alternate solution for her predicament in the form of a room that serves as a sort of pocket dimension where the angels' rules wouldn't be in effect allowing she and Issei could have sex in there to their heart's content without risk of her turning into a fallen angel.
  • Forgotten Friend, New Foe: When they have first met again after many years, she was conflicted between killing or sparing Issei, since she's an exorcist and he's a devil. After the Peace Conference, however, this is no longer an issue.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine.
  • Genki Girl: Not as hyper as some examples, but it's especially evident in the anime, where she's extremely, well, animated. If she's in the foreground of any shot, more often than not she's constantly moving.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her hair is usually tied into twin tails.
  • Going Commando: Xenovia mentions that, when she comes into Issei's room she doesn't wear a bra. Irina tries to justify this by saying it's for health reasons.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.: Clearly has one when she realizes that Xenovia has become a devil.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: She and Xenovia are BFFs, even after the latter became a devil.
  • Light 'em Up: Using light she can create and morph weapons, akin Excalibur Mimic.
  • Malicious Misnaming: It's a sore point for her if people keep referring to her as a "self-proclaimed angel".
  • Marry Them All: Proposes to Issei immediately after seeing Xenovia do it, which apparently sets some kind of Rating Game proposal record. He accepts
  • Morph Weapon: Her Excalibur Mimic, though she usually keeps it as a katana for simplicity. She later teaches it to Xenovia.
  • Oh, Crap!: She is utterly shocked when she sees Issei groping both Xenovia and Asia.
  • One of the Boys: Used to be a troublemaker like Issei back when she was a kid. So much so the latter was shocked when he discovers, many years later, that his "best friend" is a girl all along.
  • Phrase Catcher: "Self-proclaimed [title used to describe her]". Usually, it shows up as "self-proclaimed angel".
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: As part of her school uniform.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her twin tails go all the way down to her thighs.
  • Skewed Priorities: When she catches Xenovia and Asia getting intimate with Issei in a shed, Issei expects her to call the act dirty. She only ends up calling the shed dirty and tells them to Get a Room!.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Is actually in between the two characteristics. She's a girly girl to Xenovia but a tomboy to Asia.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: In the anime, she has her hair tied in a ponytail as a child.
  • Workaholic: The war in the EX future takes it's toll on Irina coming home late at night to collapse on the nearest couch out of pure exhaustion, to the point that she looks to be a future victim of Karoshi.

    Azazel

Azazel

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dxd_04_4590.jpg

Species: Fallen Angel
Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama (Japanese) and Phil Parsons (English)

Do you think a world without God is wrong? Do you think a world without God would decay? I am sorry to say but that isn’t the case. Me and you as well are both healthily living like this. The world moves even without a God.

Formerly the leader of the fallen angels, he first appears in Volume 4, when Issei mentions that he's one of his primary contractors. He then joins the club as an advisor at Sona and Sirzechs's suggestion.
  • The Ace: He's a Mad Scientist that reached several breakthroughs with Sacred Gears and created an artificial Sacred Gear. He's also an exceptional badass and leader of the fallen angels. To top it off, he's an extremely successful ladies man. Needless to say, he could be called perfect in every way.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: How he's described by Issei.
  • Ambadassador: He's sent to negotiate with the Three Factions for peace towards the end of volume 2. He luckily had his Sacred Gear with him when Katarea launches a full-scale assault on them.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He chops off his left arm just before killing Katerea.
  • Artificial Limbs: He wears a robotic arm after fighting Katerea.
  • The Atoner: Part of his reason for pushing for the peace conference is the fact that he still blames himself for the unintended consequences of his past orders, such as Shuri being killed while her husband, Baraqiel, was on a mission given by Azazel himself, causing friction between him and his daughter Akeno. When father and daughter reconcile, he silently thanks Issei for helping him lift that burden.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Well, he is the leader of the Fallen Angel faction. At first. Then, he becomes the advisor of the Occult Research Club
  • Badass Beard: He wears a chin strap and is a Mad Scientist who can kick major ass.
  • Badass Boast: Azazel delivers one to Vali after killing Katerea.
Azazel: “Now then, Vali. What will you do? Shall I go at it again? Even if I have no armor and only one-handed, I can fight with you adequately.”
  • Badass Teacher: He's the advisor of the Occult Research Club and teaches his fellow members from time to time.
  • Badass Transplant: Replaces his missing arm he cut himself into a robotic arm that he's always wanted to try out.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Like you would never believe.
  • The Casanova: To put it simply, he has a harem. A thousand of them in fact. No, that's not the number of chicks he made out with. He has a thousand harems — and he's made out with every single one of them.
  • Combat Commentator: For the Ratings Game match between Team Gremory and Team Bael.
  • Cool Car: He also has an anti-Dragon missile and a Kill Sat.
  • Staring Down Cthulhu: Confronts Indra — a god.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of all the Fallen Angels shown in the series, he's one of the very few good ones.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: After participating in one of Akeno's S&M plays.
  • Trickster Mentor: To everybody, but more on Issei and Vali than everyone else.
  • Tritagonist: If both Issei and Kiba aren't available or if the scene is a very serious matter, then it's usually through his point of view.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: His actions unintentionally end up causing Asia's death at the beginning of Volume 1 as well as Shuri's death, causing friction between Akeno and her father.
  • What Would X Do?: When he has a run in with Lilith, Ophis' clone he asks himself what Asia would do. He ends up offering her a chocolate bar.

    Gasper Vladi

Gasper Vladi

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gasper_new_4922.jpg
(after losing it) All of you should be killed. I'll even devour your souls.

Role: Bishop
Species: Dhampyr / Reincarnated Devil
Voiced by: Ayane Sakura (Japanese) and Alison Viktorin (English)

Rias's first Bishop and an extremely effeminate dhampyr who doesn't want to suck blood.
  • Achilles' Heel: Garlic is one of his weaknesses.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Born of a vampire nobleman and a human woman, Gasper is viewed as an outsider by vampires and humans alike for his powers.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: He is so cute that the guys who know he is a cross-dressing boy fall for him.
  • Badass Adorable: He's cute but he can still kick ass when he needs to.
  • Badass Teacher: His number-one apprentice is Ernestine Galnstein, Issei's daughter with Elmenhilde.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He was kept in the dark about Issei's (temporary) death because it would be too traumatic. Then Georg just had the gall to taunt him about how senseless Issei's sacrifice to save Ophis was. Cue Gaspar losing it in a grisly scene seemingly ripped straight out of Hellsing.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Rias had stated back in Volume 1 that she had already used a Bishop piece when she revived Asia. He makes his first appearance in the middle of Volume 4.
  • Cowardly Lion: Normally, he'd be afraid to do almost anything without Issei's help. Until he decides to take a hit for Xenovia, and later when he flips against Georg.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Happens anytime he uses his Sacred Gear powers. And when he uses his true powers, Kiba outright narrated that his fight against Georg wasn't a fight at all.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Gasper's is probably the only one who can beat Akeno's past. How? His birth was very much troubled, having a fragment of Balor from the beginning by the time his mother delivered him, and she died because of the shock of giving birth of such an Eldritch Abomination. Then he and Valerie were exiled from the vampire society because of their powers and being considered as "different being", while the human society did so because they were still considered as vampires. Later, they are targeted by the upper echelons of the because of their powers, and has to constantly live under tight surveillance until Valerie were able to cover his escape.
  • Dhampyr: The child of a vampire nobleman and a human woman.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: Taken Up to Eleven in the anime, complete with an incredibly cutesy tone that barely betrays his true gender.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Like Xenovia, he also made a brief appearance in the Season 1 anime's post-credits during the announcement for Season 2.
  • Eldritch Abomination: When he becomes truly enraged, his surroundings plunge into the darkness he transforms into a living mass of darkness with several red eyes who can summon several deformed creatures which messily devour his opponents. It's later revealed that all this is the result of Balor, an evil god with a piece of his consciousness sealed within Gasper's Sacred Gear. His transformation terrifies enemy and ally alike, but Balor, fortunately, treasures the Club as much as Gasper. EX reveals that he is able to contain the transformation and the darkness forms into a living shadow appearing from his body ala Shikamaru, subverting this.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: Somehow was able to collect fanboys despite knowing that he's male.
  • The Exile: He and Valerie were exiled by both the vampire and human societies.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic.
  • Future Badass: He's revealed to have evolved Forbidden Balor View into complete Time Master powers, making himself a Super Devil, and has a different personality that scares Ex.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: When he drinks Issei's dragon blood, his full power manifests.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Full-blooded vampires view him as inferior scum, while humanity is terrified of his powers.
  • Heartbroken Badass: When he finds out that Issei died, and when he finds out that Valerie Tepes, his best friend, is in a coma after overusing the Holy Grail.
  • Heroic Build: In the future. You wouldn't believe that he was once an effeminate crossdresser.
  • Hellish Pupils: Being a Dhampyr, Gasper's eyes are slitted at times, and plays this straight when he snaps after Georg taunts of Issei's (temporary) death.
  • Hikikomori: Of the agoraphobic variety, to the point that unless inspired by Issei, he will jump into a cardboard box he brings with him at the drop of a hat. Sometimes before the hat drops as well. Issei remedies this by giving him a paper bag with eye holes to help him with this, only for him to quip that Gasper looks like a pervert.
  • Human Mom, Non-Human Dad: He was born of a vampire nobleman and a human woman.
  • Male Gaze: Miyama-Zero and Ichiei Ishibumi sometimes treats him this way as if he were actually female instead of ludicrously effeminate.
  • Mentor Archetype: In EX, he teaches Ernestine Galnstein how to fight.
  • No Social Skills: Thinks cross-dressing is perfectly acceptable.
  • Our Vampires Are Different: A cross-dressing vampire to be exact.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He looks like he wouldn't harm a fly until he loses it against Georg.
  • Sealed in a Person-Shaped Can: It's revealed that Gasper's version of Forbidden Balor View contains an actual fragment of the Irish evil god Balor from which the Sacred Gear takes its name.]
  • Shower Shy: He's very uncomfortable bathing with Issei and Yuto and even when Issei forces him to bath with them, Gasper keeps his Modesty Towel on. Issei calls him out on how unmanly he's acting, especially since Gasper wears the towel like a girl.
  • Shrinking Violet: At the beginning of the story, he's terrified of being around too many people. He gets better over time.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: Many were shocked about the discovery that Gasper is half-vampire and half-human.
  • Stupid Sexy Flanders: Issei can't seem to think of him as a guy, seeing as he covers himself in a towel from the chest.
    Issei: "What a cruel reality!"
  • Superpower Lottery: There's a reason why his Bishop piece is mutated. Lampshaded by Issei, when he complains about how broken stopping time is. And that's not counting what he can do without Forbidden Balor View.
    • It goes beyond that. It turns out that his Sacred Gear is an actual fragment of Balor itself, making it a Longinus level.
  • Story-Breaker Power: His ability is to stop time. On top of that, it becomes MASSIVELY more powerful if he drinks even a drop of human blood. Luckily, for dramatic tension, he's Unskilled, but Strong (and even feared it for a long time).
  • Taking the Bullet: In Volume 10, when Xenovia's ability was sealed during the Gremory-Bael Ratings Game, he used his body as a shield to protect her.
  • Tender Tears: One of the reasons Issei just can't stop going Stupid Sexy Flanders over him.
  • Time Master: His future self-evolved Forbidden Balor View to be capable of using Balance-Breaker, which allows him to freeze time, travel through it, and send others through time. The exceptions are anyone of equal or greater strength to him.
  • Time Stands Still: His Sacred Gear, Forbidden Balor View.
  • Took a Level in Badass: His decision after rescuing Valerie is to get stronger and later begins his training regime. He shows the results in EX
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Usually, the ability to stop time would be insanely broken (especially if the user has a Mutated Piece, which denotes incalculable potential). That said, hatred and fear of his power caused him to not train it for a long time.
  • Vampires Hate Garlic: Garlic is one of his main weaknesses, something Issei notes that he needs to get out of.
  • Vegetarian Vampire: Gasper doesn't eat meat products, and he rarely drinks blood.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Nice, cute, feminine and no one would know he's a boy in a girl uniform if they were not told.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: He wears thigh-high socks.

    Rossweisse

Rossweisse

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/25511b8c19fa14d661875d6fa463f2fa.png

Role: Rook
Species: Valkyrie / Reincarnated Devil
Voiced by: Ai Kakuma (Japanese) and Mallorie Rodak (English)

One of the valkyries under the service of Odin, Rossweisse accompanies Odin to watch the Rating Games. Turns out, she hasn't gathered a single warrior for Ragnarok. After being abandoned by Odin, Rossweisse is reincarnated as a devil, joins the Occult Research Club as Rias's Rook, and becomes a civics teacher at Kuoh Academy.

  • Arranged Marriage: In volume 24, it is mentioned that her grandmother Gondul made a deal with the Asgardian top brass to marry her to one of the gods. Her groom-to-be? Vidarr, Odin's third son and current ruler of Asgard himself. Though given the Foregone Conclusion from EX, Issei is able to call this off.
  • Babies Ever After: In the future, she has a daughter with Issei, named Helmwige.
  • Badass Teacher: She is the civics teacher at Kuoh Academy from time to time.
  • Barrier Maiden: Both in literal and figurative sense, as EX shows that she has completed her sealing technique first mentioned in Volume 17 which is capable of containing a God-Class being in a black spherical barrier. However, the seal is still not perfect and requires frequent reinforcing.
  • Bathtub Bonding: Joins Issei in the male's bath at Sona's Rating Game School's Dormitory. She asks Issei to kill her if she is used by Euclid but he refused that, by saying he wouldn't hand her over and before she could give her reply Asia, Xenovia, Irina, Koneko and Ravel walk in and jump in when they see them together.
  • Berserk Button: Suggesting that her somewhat prudish ways are the reason that she doesn’t have a boyfriend gets her really upset, assuming she doesn't simply break down crying.
  • Blatant Lies: Asking Issei about his preferences and saying his opinion is an "example".
  • Bodyguard Babes: She serves as one to Odin up until the end of Volume 7.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: There should have been no reason why Odin needed her at all considering what he can do.
  • Boobs of Steel: She's a Valkyrie, so this is a given. And she has the 4th largest breasts in the series, right behind Akeno (in first place), Rias (in second place) and Kuroka (in third place).
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: As opposed to Grayfia, one cup of sake leads to slurred speech, and two leaves her with a hangover, sufficiently non-detailed nausea, hiccups and a staggered stumble.
  • Celibate Heroine: The reason she’s so far ahead academically compared to others of her age is because, unlike the other valkyries, she put romance to the side in favor of studying. She’s clearly regretting the results now, though.
  • Christmas Cake: Constantly teased by Odin about this, despite the fact that she's just about as old as the rest of the Club.
  • Expressive Hair: Her two antennae at any rate, and only sometimes.
  • Flat Character: She was introduced in volume 5 and was little more than "the cheapskate upset about not having a boyfriend" until getting some much needed Character Development in volume 17.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric.
  • Hair Antennae: And unlike Akeno's, they express her feelings on rare occasions.
  • Hair Decorations: She wears wing clips.
  • Heroic B.S.O.D.: She goes through a brief one when Odin abandons her shortly after defeating Loki.
  • Hot for Student: Becomes this after falling in love with Issei.
  • Hot Teacher: One of the teachers of Kuoh Academy despite being near Issei's age.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: She's prone to this whenever her lack of a boyfriend is brought up.
  • Instant Runes: She can make multiple magic circles in an instant, the anime shows them well during the battle with Loki where she makes a dozen in an instant.
  • The Last of These Is Not Like the Others: She becomes part of Issei's Peerage upon his promotion into a High-Class Devil, but unlike Asia, Ravel and Xenovia who expressed a desire to join prior, Rias simply traded her into his peerage.
  • Magic Knight: She wears armor like a knight, but her skill lies in her magic. Issei describes her as a "moving cannon" as a result of her being a wizard-type Rook.
  • Mentor Archetype: She teaches as a civics professor at Kuoh Academy.
  • Mid-Season Upgrade: Though it's bordering to So Last Season and 11th Hour Superpower since the novel's still ongoing on its final arc, she gets the much needed firepower by obtaining Mistleteinn, the famous weapon that killed Baldr in the original Norse myths. There's a catch for that of course
  • Mystical White Hair: Silver hair is befitting of a mystical valkyrie.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her hair goes all the way down to her knees.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: She’s notable for being one of the more conservative girls in the Club. Even Koneko, who often snarks at and punishes Issei for his perversions, isn’t completely averse toward intimacy. She’s mortified when Issei strips her with Dress Break (though she’s more upset about the cost of replacing the clothes) and wears a Modesty Towel when the other girls happily go into baths naked with him, only sharing a proper nude bath with him once when she went over to the boys’ side while the girls’ side didn’t have heat, mistakenly believing that nobody was there.
  • Rescue Romance: Falls in love with Issei after he saves her from Euclid.
  • Sensei-chan: She becomes a teacher at Kuoh Academy upon joining Rias' peerage.
  • Serious Business: She tries to save money as much as possible, preferring to shop in 100-yen shops, and her first complaint when Issei's Dress Break destroys her clothes is about what it'll cost her to replace them.
  • Shout-Out: Rossweisse and Helmwige are the names of some of the Valkyries featured in Der Ring des Nibelungen.
  • Skewed Priorities: When fighting Issei in Volume 9 to prevent him from peeping on the girls in his class, Issei manages to end the fight trough Dress Break. She gets upset... because the clothes she was wearing at the time had been on sale and will cost more to replace. It's a moment later that she suddenly realizes that she's been stripped naked, much to Issei's confusion.
  • Valkyries: She is stated to be a half-God.
  • Yandere: At least according to Issei's description of her after chasing down Odin in Volume 10.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: A non-fatal example. Odin abandons her towards the end of Volume 7, which leads to Rossweisse joining the Occult Research Club.
  • Younger than She Looks: Looks and acts like a mature person, but is only around the group's age.

    Ravel Phenex

Ravel Phenex

http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ravel_attire_1.png
Role: Bishop (free agent)
Species: Pure Devil
Voiced by: Asuka Nishi (Japanese) and Brittney Karbowski (English)

Riser's youngest sister, first appearing at Rias's first Ratings Game where she was a Bishop, but hardly did anything at all. In Volume 10, she transfers to Kuoh Academy as a first-year, being placed in the same class as Koneko and Gasper, much to the former's frustration.
  • Ascended Extra: After spending Volume 2 as a minor character and volumes 5 through 7 as a cursory nod, she becomes a major character beginning with volume 10.
  • Animal Jingoism: She has a bird motif, while Koneko has a cat motif; the two don't get along well.
  • Animal Motifs: The phoenix, which fits her surname.
  • Babies Ever After: In the future, she has a daughter with Issei, named Robertina.
  • Bathtub Bonding: She walks in on Ise bathing and joins him in Volume 14. At first, Issei is worried that it will be a repeat of the infamous Hot-springs encunter from the Volume 13 short stories, until she starts trying to be intimate with him. Unfortunately for both of them Ophis had other ideas.
  • Big Brother Worship: She believes that her brother is so powerful, no one could ever possibly defeat him. Until Issei does.
  • The Bus Came Back: After Volume 2, she is Put on a Bus and makes sporadic appearances until Volume 10, where she becomes a major character in her own right after transferring to Kuoh Academy.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Gets like this when Koneko is sitting on Issei.
  • Cry Cute: At the start of Volume 12, following Issei's "death".
  • A Day in the Limelight: Volume 14 spends time on Ravel finding Issei a wizard to form a contract with, as well as dealing with a rogue group of magicians that have been manufacturing illicit Phenex tears to sell on the black market.
  • Fanservice Pack: Some illustrations of her either depict her flat-chested or with breasts nearly the same size as Asia's (pictured above). The Official Data Book later has it that her chest is actually 2cm below Xenovia's, and that her shifting sizes were due to artist error.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic/Choleric hybrid.
  • Hair Antennae: Like Akeno, she has an antennae that slopes backwards, rather than forwards.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: A young, pretty and well-mannered Ojou.
  • Hidden Depths: Seems spoiled and shallow at first. But she's a very organized, clear-headed girl who is a talented baker, with an eidetic memory.
  • Malicious Misnaming: When Issei meets Ravel after defeating Riser, he calls her "the fried chicken's little sister." Then, Koneko calls her a "fried chicken princess." Understandably, she gets annoyed.
  • Mega Twintails: Her hair is tied into huge twin tails with large, drill-like curls. Oh, and her daughter has four
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: Does this briefly in chapter 20 of the manga, complete with pose, only for Issei to walk past her to her frustration.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Ravel is mentioned wiping out waves of evil dragons in the defense of the Norse territories in volume 21.
  • Oh, Crap!: When she realizes that Issei is about to pummel Riser to death.
  • Ojou: To be expected of the only daughter of the Phenex family.
  • One Head Taller: With Issei, who is 170 cm/5'7'', while she's only 153 cm/5'0''.
  • Playing with Fire: Uses powerful flamethrowers against evil dragons in Volume 21.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Like Riser, she also has the ability to sprout Hot Wings.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Her surname comes from the 37th of the 72 demons of the Ars Goetia, which is, as its name implies, a phoenix.
  • Shoo Out the New Guy: Inverted. Despite appearing sporadically after Riser's defeat at the hands of Issei, she makes a full return as a major character in volume 10.
  • The Smurfette Principle: The only female child of the Phenex family.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Seems just spoiled at first, but the sweetness manifests when she falls in love with Issei.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Ravel greatly resembles her mother Lady Phenex in her later years.
  • Supreme Chef: Can cook cakes just fine.
  • Sweater Girl: After transferring to Kuoh Academy in Volume 10.
  • Sweet Tooth: See Supreme Chef above.
  • Tsundere: Type B
  • Undying Loyalty: She wants to eventually become a Bishop under Issei. She finally does after he becomes a High-Class Devil in Volume 22.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Koneko, via Animal Jingoism.
