Laus

Lord Darin of Laus

The Marquess of Laus. Entranced by Ephidel's promises of power, he attempts to incite a civil war against Ostia for the role of leader of the Lycian League. When it backfires on him, he flees for Valor and is placed in charge of the defense of the Dragon's Gate.

Class: General

  • A God Am I: He has deluded himself into thinking that the whole world is his for the taking.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: For all that he'd done, even Hector pitied him after his death. Once Nils reveals how Ephidel slowly corrupted him for Nergal's malicious ends, it's not as easy to hate him anymore (even if he's still a dick). Then he's brought back as a Morph, much to the appalled horror of the Lords.
  • Arc Villain: He's set up as the main antagonist of the first stretch of the main story. But it turns out that Ephidel and Nergal are the ones pulling his strings.
  • Came Back Wrong: In the final chapter's Boss Rush.
  • Climax Boss: He's the last boss you face before the first big Wham Episode.
  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: As a morph, he has more HP than is possible for playable Generals.
  • Dirty Old Man: Poor Priscilla... According to most of the villagers you can talk to in Laus, Priscilla isn't the first attractive young woman Darin has had eyes on either.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: His defeat marks the end of Eliwood's search for his father, and the beginning of much greater concerns.
  • Driven to Madness: He was arrogant and unpleasant, but loyal to Lycia prior to his involvement with the Fang. Erik confirms this when captured and interrogated.
  • The Heavy: The Arc Villain for the first third of the game and one of the biggest villains of the overall story due to his plan to Take Over the World. He's also involved in the other Story Arc(s) of the story, even after his death. However he is the Unwitting Pawn of Nergal, the real Big Bad who is far more evil and dangerous.
  • Kick the Dog: Abandoning his son and heir Erik to his own luck, upon Ephidel's pressure. To his credit, Darin himself doesn't like it either, but he still does so.
  • Large Ham: Steadily becomes one due to his Sanity Slippage.
  • Mighty Glacier: As a General, he has very high defense at the cost of speed. Even more so as a Morph.
  • Pet the Dog: Offscreen, he agrees to Eliwood's request to stay out of the Caelin succession crisis and not support Lundgren.
  • Smug Snake: He has a far bigger ego than he can back up with competence, and Nergal plays him like a fiddle the whole way through.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Of Prince Chagall from Genealogy of the Holy War, being a delusionally arrogant megalomaniac who gets played like a fiddle by the true villains.
  • This Cannot Be!: This is his reaction as he sees himself bleeding out right before he dies.
  • Tin Tyrant: He follows the Fire Emblem tradition of being a heavily armored king who wants to conquer the world through force.
  • Villainous Breakdown: His final words before dying is basically going completely ballistic over his wounds.

Erik of Laus

The son of Lord Darin, and a former classmate of Eliwood and Hector. Both jealous of their abilities and dismissive of them, he volunteers to lead the defense of Laus to try to lull them into a false sense of security.

Class: Cavalier

  • Ascended Extra: In The Binding Blade, he was a minor early-game boss. Here, he gets some more screen-time and personality, and even a minor role in the plot.
  • Driven by Envy: This pretty much defines Erik. He was Eliwood and Hector's friend when they were young, but came to hate them for excelling farther then him.
  • Generation Xerox: In The Binding Blade, he opposes the heroes just like his father.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: He helps out Eliwood after his defeat, but The Binding Blade shows that he eventually betrays Lycia again.
  • Heel–Face Turn: It's implied he becomes a decent ruler at the game's end.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He thinks he can take advantage of Eliwood's naïvete, then strike a lethal blow when Eliwood's guard is down. Unfortunately for Erik, Eliwood quickly proves that Good Is Not Dumb.
  • Jerkass: He's a condescending prick motivated by a petty grudge against Eliwood and Hector.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Not much better than his dad.
  • Motive Rant: Gives one in his battle conversation with Eliwood and Hector about how he hates them for outshining him.
  • Saved by Canon: Owing to his appearance in The Binding Blade.
  • Silly Rabbit, Idealism Is for Kids!: His quarrel with Eliwood boils down to this.
  • Smug Snake: Tries to act all buddy-buddy with Eliwood to lead him into a trap, but Eliwood sees right through it. Nor did Erik count on Hector dropping in at that moment to inquire about all those Laus soldiers that happened to be hiding out nearby.
  • Sole Survivor: He is the only enemy boss in the game, and one of few in the series, to survive to the end. It doesn't last though, since he bites the dust in The Binding Blade.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: When he was younger, all he wanted was friends. His father helped turn him into a power hungry, jealous monster. According to Eliwood and Hector's A support, when they were young they were at a meeting where all the Marquis promised to come to one another's aid if there ever was a crisis. Little Erik picked up on this, jumped up, and cut his hand to make a blood oath. Hector was annoyed by his over eagerness and only one other kid was brave enough to take the blood oath with Erik. It suggested that neither of Eliwood or Hector was the one to take his hand, but they took each other's. Eliwood points out that none of the kids knew what to do when Erik did that and Hector mentions that he ran off when the going got tough. This may have started his resentment for the other lordlings, not that it excuses anything. They were all kids at the time and having a kid cut his or her own hand is a lot to ask of someone so young.
