Guild Masters

    Makarov Dreyar

Makarov Dreyar

Voiced by: Shinpachi Tsuji (JP), R Bruce Elliott (EN)

The elderly, miniscule master of Fairy Tail. The members of his guild often give him grief for the trouble they cause between him and the Magic Council, but he loves them as if they were all his children. His mastery over many forms of magic, including the size-increasing Giant magic and Elemental magic, has earned him the title of one of the Ten Wizard Saints, who are widely regarded as the most powerful wizards alive.
  • Action Dad: To Ivan.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: His magic allows him to turn any part of his body into that of a giant and he can use it on his whole body if he so wishes. Though when he's really ticked, he only uses it for intimidation.
  • Badass Grandpa: He's 88 years old when the series begins, but that doesn't stop him from being one of the strongest fighters in the series.
  • Badass Mustache: He has a large mustache, and is one of the most powerful wizards in Fiore and a Wizard Saint. Upgrades to a full-on Badass Beard over the second Time Skip, having turned it into a goatee.
  • Berserk Button: You can trash his guild however you like, but harming his subordinates? Not the best idea.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's usually quite amiable, but do not underestimate him!
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Eccentric and good-humored, but don't hurt anyone in his guild if you know what's good for you.
  • Big Good: The master of Fairy Tail.
  • Brain Bleach: No one wants to see him naked, as the first OVA implies.
  • Cool Old Guy: Usually, he's a pretty pleasant guy who acts as a father figure for everyone in Fairy Tail.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: To Jose in the Phantom Lord arc.
    • In the Sirius Island arc, Makarov is on the receiving end from Hades.
  • Deus Exit Machina: While he naturally wouldn't get involved in most of the series' conflicts, as the characters travel far and wide while he stays at home and looks after the guild, some threats do target the guild or the city it's in and considering he's one of the strongest members of the Ten Wizard Saints (the ten strongest wizards in the world), most threats that target the guild would have little chance of succeeding if he were allowed to enter the fray, so he's usually incapacitated in some way.
  • Did We Just Have Tea with Cthulhu?: Makarov was genuinely surprised by how friendly Emperor Spriggan was, who had him treated as a guest of the Empire with a comfortable room, good food, and even card games, with the Emperor indicating that he was more than willing to negotiate with him when it comes to Lumen Histoire. Makarov even admitted he was expecting the Emperor to be more of an Evil Overlord. Then he finds out he's dealing with Zeref.
  • Dirty Old Man: He has pretty girls in his guild and he knows it.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Quirky, clumsy old man? Check. One of the series' strongest wizards who often guides or speaks to his wizards about what life and magic is? Check.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Shows his guild a stack of complaints from the Magic Council for troubles they'd caused, scolds them all for getting the council mad at him again...then burns the whole stack and pretty much says "Screw the Magic Council!"
  • A Father to His Men: He considers every member of the guild to be his children.
  • Fridge Brilliance: In-universe example. Laxus' whole takeover attempt in the Fantasia arc is just a teenage temper tantrum fueled by fear that he was seen as nothing more than the master's grandson. Makarov throwing him out of the guild publicly forces Laxus to take his own unique path.
  • Friendly Fireproof: Fairy Law only harms those that Makarov considers an enemy.
  • Frontline General: Whenever his guild goes to war with another, Makarov will always throw himself into the action.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted; he tries to sacrifice himself to protect his guild from Acnologia but his kids won't let him.
    • After he disbands Fairy Tail, he alone goes to fend off the Albareth Empire to protect the members from an impending invasion.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: His Fairy Law spell engulfs a huge area in holy light.
  • I Have No Son: Subverted. This seems to be the case when he expels his son Ivan and grandson Laxus for bringing harm to their guild. However, he leads the guild in a warm sendoff for Laxus to prove he'll always watch over him, while he manages to keep a modicum of faith in Ivan for leaving his guild alone over the Time Skip.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Looked like a short, slender Laxus as a young man.
  • The Leader: He is the guild master of Fairy Tail, and the one who calls all the shots.
  • Light 'em Up: In his fight against Jose in the anime, which showcases this more than the manga.
  • Light Is Good: He's a powerful user Light Magic and can wield Fairy Law, usually wears a white and gold coat, and is the Guild Master of Fairy Tail.
  • Like a Son to Me: He considers all of the guild members to be his children.
  • Manly Tears: After he expels Laxus and when his guild prevents him from making a Heroic Sacrifice against Acnologia.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: Subverted to the point of Running Gag.
  • Miniature Senior Citizens: Makarov is extremely small, and it seems like he has been since at least when Laxus was a young child. His magic cures this problem, though.
  • My Greatest Failure: After he couldn't bring himself to unleash Lumen Histoire to stop Face, Markarov decides that it's time to disband Fairy Tail in order to protect them from the grave threat of the Albareth Empire.
  • Nice Hat: Wears a double-pointed cap in his earliest appearances.
  • Offhand Backhand: Delivers a pretty good one to Aria, topping off his Crowning Moment of Awesome versus Jose.
  • Oh Crap!: Upon seeing for himself that Emperor Spriggan of the Albareth Empire is none other than Zeref.
  • Papa Wolf: Regards all of Fairy Tail as his children, and will go to great lengths to make sure they're safe.
  • The Paragon: His main goal isn't to crush evil, but rather to inspire good in others.
  • Passing the Torch: One of the Running Gags in the series is his inability to decide on a good successor, and just when he thinks he has one picked out, something happens that leads him to consider him being master until the day he dies. He finally does choose Gildarts, but Gildarts retires and shoves the position back on Makarov before anyone even has a chance to know he is the new master in the first place.
    • Erza does the same, only with SLIGHTLY more time as leader.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Takes advantage of his Size Shifter abilities to grope girls.
  • Size Shifter: Though unlike the standard, he's one of the strongest characters in the series.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right: The entire guild embodies this, but Makarov is the one who encourages this kind of behavior.
  • Stuffed In The Fridge: Emperor Spriggan was planning on invoking this with Makarov, sending his body to Natsu in order to piss him off, but he was saved in time by Doranbolt.
  • Team Dad: He's the master of Fairy Tail, so this kind of goes without saying. Natsu even calls him "gramps".
  • The Worf Effect: Was hit with this during the Phantom Lord arc to hype up Aria and the other members of the Element Four.
  • You Shall Not Pass: Against Acnologia.

    Mavis Vermilion

Mavis Vermilion

Voiced by: Mamiko Noto (JP), Leah Clark (EN)

The founder and first master of Fairy Tail. Her grave is located on Sirius Island, Fairy Tail's holy ground. While alive, she employed Illusion Magic, creating apparitions reminiscent of Sirius Island. Her spirit continues to watch over her guild to guide them; she is also responsible for protecting the Tenrou Group from Acnologia's attack, freezing them in time for seven years.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: She was born in X673, and Fairy Tail was founded in X686. This would make her thirteen years old when the guild was founded, an unprecedentedly young age for a Guild Master even in the present. Considering her co-founders were Hades/Precht (the Arc Villain of the Sirius Island Arc), Warrod Sequen (a member of the Four Gods of Ishgar), and Yuriy Dreyar (Makarov's father), let that sink in a moment as to what that has to mean about Mavis' level of power and intelligence.
  • A-Cup Angst: In the fourth OVA, she just so happened to sneak into a Furo Scene involving many of the female members of Fairy Tail. Hilarity Ensues.
  • All-Loving Heroine: You know she's one when she's willing to befriend The Dreaded by conjuring up illusions for him to pet.
  • Awesome by Analysis: In the four days that the Grand Magic Games have taken place, she recorded and memorized all the rival teams' stats and battles, and uses them to give Fairy Tail a strategy for victory.
  • Barefoot Poverty: Imposed on her by old and cruel guildmaster, who decided she was undeserving of the boots he had bought her. Mavis had to go barefoot and soil her feet, much to her chagrin. But she got used to not having shoes, until being shoeless grew on her. Mavis found it much more enjoyable to have bare feet all the time, started forgetting to put on or bring shoes with her even when she had the freedom to wear some, and then abandoned wearing them forever in favor of staying perpetually barefooted.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: When Zeref tells her he plans to annihilate all living beings in Chapter 340, she responds it's the opposite. She will assure Fairy Tail will annihilate him, without any hesitating on her part.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: As Yuriy found out the hard way.
  • Big Good: Ever since her spirit left Sirius Island, she arguably shares, if not outranks, Makarov as this.
    • With Chapter 340 out (and later 406), it's pretty much solidified that she outranks Makarov. Especially with her deep connection to Zeref, and the fact that she's Lumen Histoire.
  • Break the Cutie: The awaken of her Instant Death Radius broke Mavis bad. When Zeref met her a year later, Mavis was a shell of herself that only wanted to die.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Gentle Girl to Zeref's Brooding Boy. She was the first person to show him kindness in his lonely immortal life and once she became immortal like him, she was the only one able to understand his pain and suggested them to give Eternal Love a shot to at least have each other. Sadly, the curse is hellbent in not allowing Zeref to be happy in any way.
  • Bungled Suicide: After her Instant Death Radius activated, she tried to commit suicide by starving herself to death. It didn't work.
  • The Chessmaster: Her Awesome by Analysis skills aren't just limited to fighting. During the "truth game" against Yuriy, the sheer amount of Oh Crap! in his expression when he realized just what kind of person he's dealing with and that he's been thoroughly Out-Gambitted speaks volumes.
  • Complete Immortality: Chapter 449 reveals that she isn't merely ageless. Zeref claims that her incomplete casting of "Law" cursed her to be an immortal like himself who kills everything around them. And she was, until Zeref accidentally discovers the real way to break the curse...
  • Conveniently an Orphan: In Fairy Tail Zero. Her parents were both members of Red Lizard, but they died... unfortunately while being up to their eyeballs in debt, which Mavis herself then had to work off.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: She's childish, ditzy, and obsessed with fairies, but just ask Zeref and Yuriy what she's like when the chips are down.
  • Cry Cute: The waterworks really kick off when she considers the possibility of her strategy going up in smoke due to a miscalculation.
  • Curse: She was afflicted with the same curse Zeref was. Her Instant Death Radius only took longer to activate.
  • Curse Escape Clause: Since the purpose of the Curse is to deny happiness to the cursed, Zeref's Curse was able to kill Mavis despite her own Curse when they tried to give Eternal Love a shot.
  • Cute Ghost Girl: You wouldn't expect the ghost of the first master of Fairy Tail would look like a cute little girl.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Mavis lost her parents as a very young child, and was taken in by a guild that treated her like a slave, and was even spurned by the guildmaster's daughter. When a big fight erupted in the guild and spilled over into the town where it was stationed, only the guildmaster's daughter and she were the only ones to survive.
  • Dating Catwoman: She's the benevolent First Master of Fairy Tail who was romantically involved with the feared evil wizard Zeref.
  • Death Glare: Delivers one to Zeref, the undisputed king of Death Glares in this series, that would rival one of his own. It's even more unnerving in the anime.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Her Instant Death Radius activates, and claims Makarov's mother Rita as its first victim. Mavis reacted as could have been predicted.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Played in the most tragic way possible as she died in Zeref's arms after they shared their first and only kiss.
  • Does Not Like Shoes: She is never once seen wearing anything on her feet. Justified in that she doesn't need them.
    • Meanwhile, in the past, it's revealed the guildmaster took away her stuff constantly, including her shoes, forcing her to go barefoot. Even when living on Tenrou Island on her own, she preferred to go barefoot.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Spends quite a few chapters in Fairy Tail Zero wearing this type of dress. She even refers to herself as "Black Wizard Mavis" while wearing it.
  • Enemy to All Living Things: She has the same curse as Zeref. As long as she cares about others, she will always be a threat to their lives. Zeref states that the only reason the Instant Death Radius part of her curse hadn't manifested itself yet was because of Mavis' willingness to issue orders that resulted in the deaths of enemies and allies alike during the Second Trade War, satisfying the "sees no value in life" Curse Escape Clause.
  • Empty Eyes: Her eyes never reflect highlights. This could have been because she's a ghost, light just passes through her instead of reflecting off of her eyes. It's actually because she, like Zeref, has Ankhseram's Curse. His eyes are all black with no pupils. Hers are all green with no pupils... until her curse activates and she also gains the Uh-Oh Eyes.
  • Eternal Love: Tragically subverted. Once she became immortal like Zeref, Mavis told Zeref that even if the world rejected both of them, they still have each other and could find a way to break the curse together. However, since the curse kills anything the cursed one loves, Zeref ended up killing her with his kiss.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Odd she didn't consider in her calculations of the possibility of someone like Kagura picking a fight with Erza given the shared history they have with Jellal at some point in their lives.
    • Possibly implied to have actually been Out-Gambitted by Minerva, who's clearly been running some schemes of her own.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: She has the exact same curse as Zeref, right down to the Instant Death Radius that kills off everyone around her. However, she gets killed despite her immortality because Zeref fell in love with her, causing his curse to kill her when they kissed.
  • Friendly Ghost: She's still friendly, cheerful and always appears to aid members of her guild long after she died and became a ghost.
  • Genki Girl: She may be the Big Good, but she can be just as silly and hyperactive as anyone else in the cast.
  • Godiva Hair: Her Human Popsicle physical body, as Lumen Histoire is completely naked, with only her hair to cover her up.
  • Hair Decorations: Those wings on her hair.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Easily one of the kindest, nicest characters in the series.
  • Headbutt of Love: Zeref gave her a loving headbutt when she told him she used an incomplete version of Law. She seemed quite okay with it, until she didn't die from his touch, confirming both of their worst fears.
  • Hero of Another Story: Mavis is the main character of Fairy Tail Zero, a Spin-Off detailing how Fairy Tail was founded.
  • Heroic BSOD:
    • In Fairy Tail Zero, the guild master of Blue Skull being able to see through her illusions and dispel them with a dust storm caused one of these in her; especially after both Yuriy and Precht were grievously injured in the ensuing fight, and were forced to retreat.
    • She has an even bigger one once Zeref tells her the real reason she hasn't grown up, and says that it's only a matter of time before her Instant Death Radius activates.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Her use of Law to save Yuriy's life, a spell that is extremely dangerous to use if you haven't mastered it, nearly killed her. While at first it looked like she only got off with losing the ability to age, it turns out she received a Fate Worse Than Death...
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Fairy Law, of course. Ironically enough, the original version, known simply as "Law", was taught to her by Zeref himself. This actually makes sense though, as it is an attack that only strikes those the caster sees as an enemy, regardless if they're good or evil.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Played with. At the time, Zeref really wasn't that bad of a guy; just a self-loathing Cosmic Plaything who was forced to become The Aloner. She becomes his friend - probably the first and only real friend he's had in centuries, if not ever - and he was so moved by the experience that he gives them the edge they need to defeat Blue Skull. She even dresses up in Elegant Gothic Lolita and calls herself "Black Wizard Mavis," showing she knew exactly who he was. And then he Took a Level in Jerkass...
  • Human Popsicle: Apparently Lumen Historie is her body frozen in a crystal. Whether it's her corpse or she's in suspended animation has yet to be revealed.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: After her Instant Death Radius activated, Mavis only wanted to die and tried to starve herself, but the immortality that came with the curse ruined it for her. She begged Zeref to kill her, but he said he couldn't because he had the same curse. Or at least he thought he couldn't...
  • Idiot Hair: A permanent cowlick on the very top of her hair. She's no idiot, though.
  • Invisible to Normals: Only those who bear the Fairy Tail guild mark can see her since she's (apparently) dead.
  • Kiss of Death: How Zeref kills her, even though she was immortal. Turns out the way to end the curse is with love.
  • Light 'em Up: Fairy Glitter
  • Little Miss Badass: Just how badass is she? Not only is she easily one of the most brilliant tactical minds in all of Earth-Land, but she's so powerful that she was able to use a spell like Fairy Sphere from beyond the grave. The fact that she wasn't actually dead, but was miles away and stuck in a crystal, doesn't take away from this feat.
  • Living MacGuffin: Being Lumen Histoire, or Fairy Heart as it is less commonly known, Albareth is willing to wage war on Ishgar to claim her. Or more accurately, Zeref is.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Zeref. She was the first and only woman he ever loved, but his curse wouldn't allow him to be happy with her. Her death was where his real Start of Darkness began.
  • Master of Illusion: In Fairy Tail Zero, this was originally the only magic she knew. Her illusions are convincing enough that she was able to bluff an enemy into giving up all the info he knew by conjuring an illusionary monster. Especially impressive since she was almost entirely self-taught.
  • Merlin and Nimue: Zeref was her magic teacher. Because she used an incomplete version of the Law that he taught her, she ended up cursed like him. Mavis wanted her and Zeref to form an Eternal Love relationship to have each other and find a way to break the curse together, but sadly them falling in love with each other got her killed.
  • A Mother to Her Men: She uses Fairy Sphere to protect the guild members on Sirius Island from Acnologia's attack.
  • My Greatest Failure: She never expected Precht to turn out the way he did when she chose him as master. Because of that, she blames herself for knowledge of Lumen Histoire leaking to Ivan.
  • Never Grew Up: Her growth was halted after she used an incomplete "Law" due to Ankhseram's Curse.
  • No Sell: She's completely immune to Zeref's Instant Death Radius, and just stands there giving him a Death Glare as he destroys the entire forest they're in just to make a point. Justified in that she's immortal, and can't die. Indeed, the Mavis that appeared to Zeref might not even be a ghost at all, but some kind of convoluted Astral Projection meant to reinforce the cover-up of Lumen Histoire's true nature.
  • Not Growing Up Sucks: Averted. The price she paid for using Law before mastering it was losing the ability to age. Yuriy deeply regrets this since it was for his sake, but Mavis herself seems to be okay with it, and says it was worth it, until she was told by Zeref the truth of her inability to age.
  • Not So Above It All: She is just as weird as the rest of the guild.
  • Oh Crap!: Her response to Kagura being Spanner in the Works in regards to the strategy with Erza to fight Minerva. Then she graduates into a Heroic BSOD when Minerva pops out of nowhere, fearing her strategy might be completely derailed.
  • Only Friend: To Zeref; see Throw the Dog a Bone below. Not only was Zeref the one who taught Fairy Tail's founding members their magic because of it, but throughout the entire main series and Fairy Tail Zero, Mavis is the only person that Zeref has ever been shown to allow to be in close physical proximity to him. Zeref even says that the time they spent together were his 'most cherished memories.' She's also the only person who can truly relate to him, seeing as how she has the exact same curse as Zeref himself. She eventually fell in love with him and sealed her fate.
  • OOC Is Serious Business: Even Lucy was wondering why she wandered off into the forest on her own with such a serious look on her face.
  • Opposites Attract: With Zeref.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: She's been dead for quite some time, and yet, she was somehow able to transcend death itself to the degree that she is not only able to communicate with the living (as long as they're Fairy Tail members), but can actually use her magic as well.
  • Passing the Torch: Chose Precht as master of Fairy Tail. She has come to regret her decision due to his Face-Heel Turn.
  • Pillar of Light: Fairy Glitter.
  • Please Don't Leave Me: She begs the illusion of Zeira that she unconsciously created to not dispel, but ultimately accepts her death and moves on.
  • The Pollyanna: For a girl who received the Ankhseram's Curse in life and who was accidentally killed by the man she loved, Mavis sure remains very cheerful as a ghost.
  • Posthumous Character: Of a sort. She's been stated to be dead for years, and her grave is located on Sirius Island.
  • Power Floats: She's shown several times to be able to fly or hover, and she's one of the most powerful mages in the series. Justified in that she's a disembodied spirit.
  • The Power of Friendship: Weaponized; she uses the power of the guild members' faith and bonds between themselves to cast Fairy Sphere.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: The ultimate spell that Zeref taught her, known as Law, a technique that destroys anything that the caster considers evil and saves all that is good, the "Absolute Judgement" magic. This explains how both Fairy Law and Grimoire Law would be developed.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Zeref, in a number of ways. For example:
    • Both are unaging, extremely powerful wizards who have profoundly affected Earth Land as we know it today, that started off as Child Prodigies in the fields of magic. Mavis went on to found the titular guild, whereas Zeref is indirectly responsible for the existence of just about every Dark Guild that came after him, especially Tartaros.
    • Mavis actually is dead (allegedly), whereas Zeref wants to die. Both lost their ability to age as a consequence for fiddling with magic they didn't completely understand for the sake of somebody they cared about, with Mavis losing her ability to age by using a spell she hadn't mastered to save Yuriy's life, and Zeref losing his by pissing off Ankhseram by trying to resurrect Natsu as E.N.D.
    • Also, both of them used magic to cope with loss Mavis unconsciously used her illusion magic to pretend that Zeira was still alive, and Zeref used magic to revive his dead little brother Natsu as E.N.D. And the clincher? They both have Ankhseram's Curse.
  • Ship Tease: With Zeref. Hard. He gave her a Headbutt of Love and she seemed perfectly willing to go along with it. Of course, he was really just Tempting Fate to see if she'd die. She didn't.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She fell in love with Zeref despite knowing full well who he is and what he is capable of because she could see he wasn't as bad as rumors described him, just seeing a lonely and tortured man with a cruel curse. She became attracted to him because he was kind enough to teach her and her friends magic and she said she liked his kind eyes. She is immensely disappointed in the man he is today, though she does recognize the circumstances that caused his change in character (specifically her death) are more than justifiable.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Ankhseram's Curse all but guarantees that she and Zeref can never truly be together, though it's heavily implied that Zeref wants Lumen Histoire not as a weapon, but as a way to Screw Destiny.
  • The Strategist: Her Awesomeness by Analysis abilities earned her the nickname "Fairy Tactician". She earned this title during the Second Trade War, where she was the reason her side won. Her willingness to issue orders that resulted in casualties for both sides was the only reason her Instant Death Radius didn't activate at the time.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: She developed a crush on her magic mentor Zeref.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: What she did with her Illusion Magic for Zeref brought him to Tears of Joy. He even admits in the narrations at the end of the chapter that that was his most precious memory. It's safe to say she was his Only Friend in centuries, if not ever. She's also the only person in the entire world who can ever truly relate to him, seeing as how they both have the same Curse. This is the reason why they eventually fell in love with one another.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Covers her entire back, and reaches down to her ankles.
  • Red Baron: "Fairy Tactician" Mavis.
  • Retcon: Was apparently originally going to be male until Hiro Mashima realised Mavis was a girl's name.
  • The Reveal: Mavis' physical body, encased in crystal, is Lumen Histoire. She's apparently in there for a damn good reason.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Lumen Histoire is her physical body encased in a crystal.
  • Sphere of Power: Fairy Sphere. It's the strongest defensive spell in the series, but using it displaces you in time.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: She genuinely feels bad for Zeref, having asked if he still wanted to die after the Grand Magic Games and implied that she willingly let him stay on Sirius Island with her. In the anime, she even looks like she's on the verge of tears as he basically tells her that he thinks Humans Are Bastards. Regardless, she still vows that Fairy Tail will stop him from wiping out humanity. Fairy Tail Zero shows how they really knew each other; she befriended him, and ironically, if it wasn't for Zeref, Fairy Tail as a mage guild might have never existed. There's also the fact that she knows exactly what he's going through, and that they love one another.
  • The Unreveal: Mashima outright censored her fate on the last few pages of Zero. It's still ultimately not even clear if she's dead or alive, much less how she ended up encased in crystal. The 'dead or alive' part is at least cleared up in Chapter 449, though, and then once more in 450.
  • Vague Age: As in how old she was when she died. She looks like a child and has some child-like manners, but she is a very intelligent strategist and was able to start and run a whole guild, which could hint that she is a grown-up or at the very least in her late teenage years. We finally learn her birth year, if not her age when she died, in Fairy Tail Zero. She was born in X673, meaning she'd be 118 if she was still alive today, and that she was thirteen years old when the guild was founded. Chapter 13 of Zero reveals she was twenty-six years old when she died. She still appears as a thirteen year old girl because she lost the ability to age right before that.
  • Walking Spoiler: At this point, it's pretty much impossible to talk about her without revealing that she's not dead, has a deep connection to Zeref, and that her physical body is Lumen Histoire, a.k.a. Fairy Heart.
  • Walk on Water: The very first time Fairy Tail saw her, she was standing on the waves near Sirius Island.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Says this to Zeref, saying she doesn't believe any of the rumors about him, and said that there's no way somebody as kind as him can be evil. Then he reveals how she's now immortal like himself, adds that it's only a matter of time before her Instant Death Radius activates, and she runs away crying.

S-Class Wizards

    Erza Scarlet

    Mirajane Strauss

Mirajane Strauss

Voiced by: Ryōko Ono (JP), Monica Rial (EN)

Click here to see her in Satan Soul

A semi-retired S-Class wizard who works at Fairy Tail as an employee. She is an expert at using Transformation Magic to alter her appearance, clothes, and voice. She is also the eldest of three siblings who specialize in Take Over magic, a spell that lets its caster take over the powers of creatures they come in contact with; her specialty is Satan Soul, which allows her to take over the powers and forms of demonic beings. However, she temporarily loses this ability due to the trauma of losing her youngest sibling in an accident.
  • Absolute Cleavage: In Satan Soul.
  • Action Girl: Big time, rivaled only by Erza in Fairy Tail.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: She and her younger siblings were chased away by townspeople for their Take-Over powers when they were kids, even after little Mira had used her powers to rescue a church.
  • Badass: Any character who can engage Erza on equal footing deserves the mention.
  • Badass Adorable: She may seem sweet, but she's also one of the most badass characters.
  • Badass Longcoat: Satan Soul: Sitri.
  • Bare Your Midriff: As a child.
  • The Bartender: Sometimes acts as this in the guild. She's definitely got the friendly, good advice part down.
  • Berserk Button: For all her friendliness and kindness, her siblings being hurt are a a big no-no to her. Fried pressed it and was given a Curb-Stomp Battle for his efforts. Later, Seliah admits to her face of forcing Elfman to try and blow up the guild. Her response is a Nightmare Face and "You did that to my siblings? Heh."
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She's polite and caring...until you hurt one of her loved ones, such as Elfman. Fried finds out the hard way.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: If you slight her, she will get you back. Gajeel suffered this one.
  • Big Damn Heroes: She punched out Seilah just after Kyouka had paralyzed Erza, rescuing Erza, Minerva, Lector, and Frosch.
  • Big Sister Instinct: There is a line that no one should cross. As some tropes here say, Fried crosses it.
    • Seliah admitting to forcing Elfman to try and destroy the guild certainly crossed it for her.
  • Broken Bird: As of Chapter 381, it is revealed that the Strauss siblings were orphaned, and were ousted from their home village for Mirajane's demon Take Over, even if she had rescued a church with said powers. When she first joined Fairy Tail, like Erza, she didn't want to speak to anybody, though her younger siblings had no problem socializing. She even tried to leave the guild. A few years later, she presumably lost her younger sister, Lisanna. She seems to have recovered completely after Lisanna came back.
  • The Chick: On Fairy Tail's B Team in the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: She has her moments.
  • Contralto of Danger: Satan Soul
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: In the anime-only Key of the Starry Heavens arc, after curbstomping Mary Hughes, rather than finish her off as everyone expected, she just waves her finger in Mary's face and says "Bad! Bad!"
  • Cool Big Sis: To several, particularly Lucy, not to mention in a literal sense to Elfman and Lisanna.
  • Covert Pervert: Seems to have BDSM tendencies, especially judging by her spanking of Bound and Gagged Erza due to a penalty game.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Completely trashes Fried with her Superpowered Evil Side in the Fantasia arc.
    • Delivers another against Blue Pegasus' Jenny and later Kamika of the Garou Knights in the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Originally hated her Take Over powers since she and her siblings were chased out of their hometown because of them and she didn't consider herself human anymore. She managed to accept them after her siblings showed her they had the same kind of magic.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Orphaned, chased out of her home village because of her powers and then presumably lost one of her younger siblings.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Satan Soul.
  • Death Glare: Her "Demon" eyes.
    • Returns one to an equally glaring Seilah in the Tartaros Arc and what a look it was...
  • Demonic Possession: Inverted; she's the one who possesses demons, as explained by Makarov during a flashback.
  • Elemental Powers: Lightning, Water, and Darkness.
  • Enfant Terrible: Was one when she was younger, though Lisanna's death caused a great shift in her personality.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Lucy has been seen looking at her modeling pictures. In the Fantasia arc, it's been stated that she has captured the hearts of men and women across the land.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: After her sister Lisanna was attacked by their brother Elfman, she changed her hair from a ponytail to a forehead tail. The new hairstyle is more in keeping with the sweeter personality she developed.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Double Subversion. Many have said that she's a good chef, but she's easily the most feminine out of all of the cast. However, interestingly enough, she was even able to cook when she was a kid.
  • Finger-Licking Poison:
"Poison? That's merely a dessert... For a demon like me <3."
  • Former Teen Rebel: She's sweet now, but as a kid she was Perky Goth who walked a line between Hot-Blooded and Jerkass.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Jenny Realight, and sometimes with Erza if their former rivalry even comes up anymore.
  • Game Face: Satan Soul.
  • Girliness Upgrade: In her backstory.
  • Girly Bruiser: She is the Team Mom of the guild, is incredibly gentle, and is said to be the guild's Team Chef. She also has a modelling gig with Sorceror's Weekly Magazine. Her Satan Soul forms, however, make her very much a bruiser.
  • Good Eyes, Evil Eyes: She had Tsurime Eyes when she was younger and when she uses Satan Soul, now she has Tareme Eyes.
  • Guest Star Party Member: She usually has a role in most arcs, especially ones where the entire guild does, but particularly during the Phantom Lord arc where she stands in as The Chick for Lucy in her absence and the Grand Magic Games arc, where she can be considered Natsu's Lancer when they go to rescue Lucy.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: To protect Lisanna from Azuma's explosives in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Idiot Hair: She purposely wears it this way. As a teenager, she had a Tomboyish Ponytail.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: During her youth, after being harassed by people and ousted from her village, Mira began to resent her power. Now averted, as she uses her power to protect her siblings.
  • Indifferent Beauty: While it's been mentioned that she's won the hearts of men and women all over the country, she never actually uses her looks to her advantage.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Emphasizing her sweet, compassionate nature.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In her youth, despite being rude and abrasive, she still cared for her younger siblings.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: Soul Extinction.
  • The Lad-ette: When she was younger.
  • Let's Get Dangerous: After Fried hurt Elfman, she finally showed just how dangerous she can be.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Her Satan Soul lets her fly and move with incredible speed and make shock-waves with her punches.
  • Literal Genie: She has a bit of fun with this during the beauty pageant in the Fantasia arc. While the other contestants use their magic to change into alluring costumes or bathing suits, she uses hers to make a happy face... Happy the cat, that is.
    "This is my happy face!"
  • Little Big Sister: She's Elfman's older sister, but doesn't look like it since he's way bigger and really protective of her.
  • Little Miss Badass: Before Mirajane joined Fairy Tail, she defeated a demon attacking a church with her Satan Soul.
  • Meaningful Name: The first half of her name (and frequent nickname), Mira, means "peace." It was more of an Ironic Name during her Enfant Terrible years, but it suits her adult persona extremely well.
  • Ms. Exposition: She's often the one explaining things about the guild or guilds in general to Lucy (and thus to the audience).
  • Ms. Fanservice: To the point of winning a fanservice contest against another model in the Grand Magic Games.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: She endured one from Seilah, who was using demonic power.
  • No Sell: Thanks to Satan Soul, things like poison have no effect on her. It prevents her from being turned into a demon by Tartaros because she already can turn into one, and made her immune to Seilah's Macro.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Her spells transform her into different kinds of demons.
  • People Puppets: Uses Take Over on Seilah, gaining her curse, Macro. She uses it to command Elfman to save her.
  • Perky Goth: In her youth, though she wasn't so much "perky" as she was Hot-Blooded.
  • Pink Means Feminine: She usually wears pink dresses.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Satan Soul.
  • Power Makes Your Voice Deep: In her Satan Soul Takeover.
  • Powers via Possession: Her family's trademark magic. Her particular brand is Demonic Possession.
  • Proper Lady: The death of her little sister mellowed her into one of these. The threatened death of her brother turned her into Silk Hiding Steel.
  • Psychosomatic Superpower Outage: Her sister's death was such a shock that she hasn't been able to use her full power ever since until she is threatened with the loss of her remaining sibling.
  • Red Baron: She used to be called "The Demon", and for good reason.
  • Red Right Hand: A few of her transformations still have the Idiot Hair ponytail.
  • The Rival: To Erza. They even had their own version of Natsu and Gray's slugfests when they were younger, though now they are good friends. Still relishes any opportunity to bring Erza down a peg. She is also this to Jenny Realight of Blue Pegasus due to their modeling careers.
  • Shamu Fu: In the Eclipse Celestial Spirits arc, she takes down Pisces by grabbing the mother by the tail and whacking the son with her whale body.
  • Shipper on Deck: Natsu/Lucy, in an omake.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: Wears spaghetti strap dresses. As a child, she wore tank tops.
  • Sibling Team: With Elfman and Lisanna until the latter's death. Subverted again when Lisanna comes back.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: So sweet and adorable and spacey, it's easy to forget she's an S-Class wizard.
  • Stripperiffic: Her Satan Soul Take Over.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Satan Soul is a subversion. She's extremely angry the first time she uses it after Lisanna's death, so it seems like this at first.
  • Team Mom: Is pretty much the entire guild's mother, which is kinda creepy considering she's also their poster girl.
  • Tears of Joy: When she reunites with her Not Quite Dead sister Lisanna.
  • The Tease: Comes with her status as an in-universe gravure model. Sometimes will use her transformation magic to turn into other women (Lucy usually becomes the unwilling target) and makes sexy poses for the men.

    Laxus Dreyar

Laxus Dreyar

Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi (JP), Hideyuki Hayami (JP - young), Patrick Seitz (EN), Mary Morgan (EN - young)

Click here to see his pre-Time Skip appearance

Makarov's grandson, an S-Class wizard, and heir to the title of guild master. When he starts out, he values strength above all else and does not get along well with most of his fellow guildmates, particularly his grandfather. However, the experiences he goes through that cause him to be expelled and later reinstated in the guild shape him into a much kinder person. He uses Lightning Magic, and is also the Lightning Dragon Slayer via artificially implanted magic courtesy of his excommunicated father Ivan.
  • The Ace: He's gotten rid of most of his personality issues, and is actually amicable, if a bit standoffish. Cemented by the fact that he beat Jura, who is ranked 5th among the Wizard Saints..
    • There are now fan debates on whether or not he's become stronger than Gildarts. And we're still not sure whether or not Gildarts is stronger than Makarov...
  • And This Is for...: In the Grand Magic Games arc, he beats up all the members of Raven Tail who hurt and/or humiliated Wendy, Carla, Gray, and Lucy. Humorously, when he gets to the one member who didn't do anything to Fairy Tail, he basically says "I got nothing" and blasts him anyway.
  • Anti-Hero: He was originally a Nominal Hero and then a Anti-Villain, but he seems to have softened into a Pragmatic Hero after his return.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Fantasia arc.
  • Badass: Hands down one of the most badass people in Fairy Tail Guild. Examples? He curbstomps the entire Raven Tail team in the Grand Magic Games, and beat Jura, the 5th most powerful Wizard Saint, 'one-on-one. And those are just the recent ones.
  • Badass Baritone: In the dub, he's voiced by Patrick Seitz. Even in the original Japanese version, Katsuyuki Konishi uses a very deep voice.
  • Badass Longcoat: It's covered in fur and completely awesome.
  • All Your Powers Combined: In the anime, he tells all the other members to combine their magic with his Raging Bolt to use against Acnologia. Sadly, it doesn't work.
  • Big Bad: Of the Fantasia arc, where is efforts to become leader involve manipulating a battle royal between the members of the guild by taking members of the beauty pageant hostage then threatening to destroy the town and hoping that Makarov surrenders the title of guild master.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just when Natsu's about to be killed by Hades, Laxus busts in and smacks the man right in the face. He pulls another one by delivering a power punch to buy time for Team Natsu to deliver the final blow.
    • He pulls another one Post-Timeskip when Fairy Tail is attacked by one of the Spriggan Twelve, he swoops down from an airship to not only stop Ajeel's attack but stop the guy in his tracks with an absolutely massive lightning bolt.
  • The Big Guy: On Fairy Tail's B Team and the combined team in the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • The Bus Came Back: In the Sirius Island arc.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Makarov isn't his father, but when he was younger, Laxus called his literal old man out for expelling his dad from the guild, causing their relationship to sour.
  • Character Development: At the beginning of the series, Laxus considers strength to be the most important thing in the world. After a few months of traveling and finding himself, he says this after giving Natsu his magical power in to fight Hades.
Natsu: "Why did you give this to me? I'm so much weaker than you."
Laxus: "It's not about strong or weak. Who was the one hurt by all this? Someone with the guild's brand needs to handle this...the right way. Take the pain that was caused to your guild and return it 100 fold."
  • Coat Cape: Seriously, when has he ever worn that coat?
    • The Coats Are Off: Discards his coat to fight Natsu and Erza in the Fighting Festival arc, and later against Jura in the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Curbstomp Battle: Post time-skip he seems to be doing this in spades. He cubstomps Raven Tail, which includes his own father, and Tempesta who is one of the Nine Gates of Hell of Tartaros.
  • Duel Boss: Subverted. Natsu wants to take him down alone so badly in the Fighting Festival arc ("This is my chance to take the top spot!"), but after Laxus almost kills him, he accepts Gajeel's help.
  • Dynamic Entry: His entrance attack against Hades in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Expy: To Captain Hardner, of Rave Master. Both of them pull a Face-Heel Turn because of a mindset that they later renounce; they start off calm and collected, and get progressively more Ax-Crazy the more their plan unravels; and they're both defeated by the combined efforts of The Hero and a dragon who joined them by means of Defeat Means Friendship.
  • Freudian Excuse: Parental Abandonment and/or the cause of the scar is what led to him being a Jerk Ass at the beginning of the story.
    • Not only that, he hated being seen (At least in his eyes) as simply Makarov's grandson instead of his own unique being. This is what lead to his attempt at taking over Fairy Tail as he wanted to prove himself.
  • Foreshadowing: Around the start of the battle against Hades, and even earlier, a powerful thunderstorm covers the island. Guess whose arrival those strikes of lighting heralded?
    • Also, when he asks Mystogan which of the two of them is the strongest, Mystogan replies that he would choose Gildarts over either of them. Laxus says that Gildarts is never coming back. Gildarts does return, and not long after that. One wonders if Laxus is actually relieved that he wasn't able to kill anyone...
  • Forgotten Phlebotinum: Remember when he fought Natsu and Gajeel and whipped out massive Thunder Dragon Slayer attacks? Remember him using Fairy Law? Dragon Force? Jarring since Dragon Force would of given him an edge against the dragons.
    • Actually, non-Dragon Slaying magic is pretty much ineffective against dragons, so it's questionable whether Fairy Law would have done the job. Second generation Dragon Slayers always go into Dragon Force when they use their magic.
    • An alternate explanation is that he was using the little bit of energy he had left, even in Dragon Force. The guy just beat freakin' Jura. Give him a round of applause for being able to stand after doing that.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: After sucking up Tempesta's poison, he is hurt so badly he basically falls into a coma. Makes sense since it is poison.
  • Genius Bruiser
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: He goes crazy when he realizes that he doesn't hate Fairy Tail enough to kill a single member himself.
  • Good Costume Switch: An unusual variant. He changes from a gaudy outfit completed by a fur lined jacket to a simple one with a traveling cloak. Not so much good and evil as prideful and humble.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: A lightning bolt through his eye.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Played for Laughs once Wendy joins the guild, as he's envious that they have flying kitties and he doesn't.
  • Having a Blast: Raging Bolt.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation: Before he is excommunicated, he was always seen wearing headphones. After he returns, they disappear.
  • Heel-Face Turn: He tries to destroy Fairy Tail in order to remake it in his own image. After being snapped out of his madness, however, he embraces his kindhearted nature.
  • Heroic Build: He's really muscular and becomes a more heroic person.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Instead of dodging an incredibly large and powerful attack from Hades, he takes it. All so he could give all his magical power to Natsu. Why? Because it was Fairy Tail that was hurt, and a member of Fairy Tail should be the one to return it 100-fold.
    • Later sucks up Tempesta's poison to save the Raijin Tribe and Yajima, with his order being that they take them all home.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Casting Fairy Law cost him a ton of magic energy, and this was the only reason Natsu and Gajeel were able to defeat him.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Fairy Law.
  • Hulking Out: During his battle with Natsu and Gajeel in the Fighting Festival arc when he reveals that he is a Dragon Slayer, complete with enlarged canines and scales appearing on his arms. It hasn't happened since.
  • Identical Grandson: Looks like a tall, muscular version of young Makarov. Hades double takes when Laxus charges in, and calls Laxus "boy" which he used to call Makarov.
    • Seems to be a case of Strong Family Resemblance. While Laxus resembles his Grandfather the most, he also bears a strong enough resemblance to his great-grandfather, Yuri (the 4th unknown founder of FT) that fans immediately guessed that the 4th founder was Makarov's father. And of course, Ivan is the Black Sheep of the family.
  • It's Personal: Inverted. He gives his power to Natsu instead of fighting Hades himself specifically because he feels that as a nonmember of Fairy Tail, he shouldn't be the one to take out Hades. See Character Development above.
    • Played straight against Raven Tail as he was not happy about how his own father would hurt his family.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He refuses to listen to his kind-natured heart, but when he is forced to do so, he becomes a much nicer person. He's still a bit distant and says some oftentimes blunt things, but he cares for the guild more then anything.
  • Jerkass: What he starts out as.
  • Leitmotif: The prevalant music from the Fighting Festival arc. Becomes very apparent when it starts playing again after he storms in to attack Hades.
  • Light Is Not Good: Applies if you go by the alternate spelling of his name, Luxus (Lux is latin for light). Subverted at the end of the Fantasia arc; he was Good All Along.
  • Lightning Bruiser: All puns aside, this guy's abilities are ridiculous. He's hard enough to hit as it is, and when things really get dicey, he can actually turn himself into lightning, which makes him ridiculously fast. He's one of the toughest sons of bitches in a guild where being Made of Iron is par for the course, and his lightning magic is ridiculously powerful. This doesn't even take into account him being a Dragon Slayer or having Fairy Law in his arsenal. A perfect example of this comes up in his fight with Mystogan: Mystogan hit him with a devastating spell that took so long to set up that he needed to use illusions to keep Laxus occupied and buy himself enough time to cast it. When Laxus figured this out, he hit Mystogan with an equally powerful spell that he just fired off in the seconds it took for the latter's spell to activate. (although the two are considered to be equals, Laxus is more combat oriented while Mystogan specializes in stealth and utility)
    • Interestingly, before his Character Development, he had a tendency to turn himself into a Fragile Speedster/Glass Cannon. His arrogance had him cast ridiculously powerful and costly spells (read: Fairy Law) when he really didn't need to, which caused him to wear himself out and make it easier (read: actually possible) for Natsu to beat him. However, he's since grown out of this.
  • Manly Tears: When he is excommunicated, Fairy Tail gives him the send-off of a lifetime to let him know that they still consider him one of their own, causing him to cry on his way out.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Right after Makarov is defeated by Hades.
  • Not So Stoic: Cries when he is forced to leave Makarov behind to save the others when faced with Acnologia. Also during the Magic Tournament, he enjoyed his fight with Jura and definitely was not emotionless.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Justified. No matter how much he hates Fairy Tail's reputation, he doesn't have the stomach to directly kill anyone.
  • Pride: The reason for his rebellion, and his defining character trait pre-excommunication. After his return, he still has pride in his admittedly monstrous abilities, but it's majorly toned down and he no longer believes his power makes him better than everybody else.
  • Psycho Electro: He gets better.
  • Put on a Bus: At the end of the Fantasia arc.
  • Ride The Lightning: He can turn himself into lightning to dodge an attack or travel a short distance.
  • Shock and Awe: His main form of magic.
  • Smoking Is Cool: At first, but it was dropped early in the manga, and removed entirely in the anime.
  • Social Darwinist: He initially believes that Fairy Tail should adopt this ideal in order to become stronger.
  • The Stoic: After returning.

    Gildarts Clive

Gildarts Clive

Voiced by: Kazuhiko Inoue (JP), Jason Douglas (EN)

The S-Class wizard regarded by everyone in the guild to be the most powerful member of Fairy Tail, period. His magic, Crash, causes him to vaporize anything he touches as a testament of his strength. He is given permission to take on jobs that have never been completed for dozens, or even hundreds of years, and thus only visits his guild a couple of years at a time for short periods of time. He is also Cana's biological father.
  • The Ace: To elaborate: He is said to be the strongest mage in the guild. Natsu is about as strong, or stronger than both Erza and Mirajane, and was able to beat Laxus (albeit with Gajeel's help). Natsu makes a point that he could never beat Gildarts. The guy is that strong.
  • Achey Scars: His injuries start to sting just as Acnologia descends upon Tenrou Island.
  • Action Dad: He's really Cana's father.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parent: Becomes this to Cana after he finds out she's his daughter.
  • Artificial Limbs: Lost an arm and leg to Acnologia.
  • Badass: The strongest member of Fairy Tail. Debates rage on whether or not that distinction includes Makarov or Laxus as of late. He's so incredibly powerful and skilled that Natsu considers it a minor accomplishment that one of his attacks forced Gildarts to move his legs in order to block it properly. This was the same special move that Natsu used to finish off Laxus.
    • He is the first person to confront Acnologia and live to tell the tale (albeit losing almost half his body), and the dragon apparently put more effort into fighting just him than the entire Tenrou Group. Keep in mind that he isn't even a Dragon Slayer at that. The only kind of people who can actually hurt dragons. And Acnologia, the Dragon King actually put more effort in fighting just him?. Yeah, don't mess with him.
  • Badass Cape: It's tattered because of the battles it has seen.
  • Battle Aura: One of few characters shown to use one, and with good reason: it's strong enough to bring Natsu to his knees, in tears. Complete with Chunky Updraft.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Don't piss him off.
  • Beyond the Impossible: During his fight with Bluenote, he destroys a black hole.
  • Big Brother Mentor: To Natsu.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He shows up just as Bluenote is about to kill Cana and Natsu.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: A very good guy who keeps porno mags in his travel satchel.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: To Natsu. He still passes Natsu for the exam, but not before making a point.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Gets this in Chapter 299.
  • Deus ex Machina: He becomes this during Natsu and gang's massively one-sided fight against Bluenote Stinger during the Tenrou Island arc.
    • Quite possibly the reason why Hiro Mashima always seems have him on an extended quest, Walking the Earth or somehow otherwise engaged in most story arcs: He's probably too powerful to fight any of the wizards in Fiore.
  • Disappeared Dad: To Cana. Justified in that he was away on another of his many-year-long jobs when she was born, so he didn't know Cana was his daughter, plus Cana was just too painfully shy to reveal the truth to him over the years.
  • The Ditz: There's a reason why the town has an emergency alarm just for him.
  • Doting Parent: To Cana.
  • Establishing Character Moment: When Gildarts first strides into town after a long absence, we find out that the town is set up to transform itself to move buildings out of his way. If the people didn't, he'd just absentmindedly walk straight through people's houses.
  • Expy: To Gale Glory.
  • Handicapped Badass: Acnologia took his left leg, arm, and one of his organs.
  • It's Personal: His fury against Grimoire Heart, Bluenote in particular:
Gildarts: "It was an important test. It meant more to these kids than any adult could ever imagine. This test represented their determination towards their futures...and you've stepped all over it."
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At least he was in the past. In Fairy Tail Ice Trail he taunts Gray frequently, but still shows concern for his (and others') well being.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Best example being during the Key of Starry Night filler arc. He litrally appears from off-screen in a flash of light and uppercuts the guy before anyone can react.
  • Manly Tears: After Cana tells him that she is his daughter, Then it dawned on him.
  • Megaton Punch: Delivered one of epic proportions to Bluenote.
  • Oh Crap!: When he learns Cana is his daughter, he frantically goes through the names of all her potential mothers. Has a more serious one later when Acnologia shows up on Sirius Island.
  • One-Man Army: Heavily implied.
  • Over-Enthusiastic Parents: To Cana.
  • Papa Wolf: To his whole guild. Played more literally with Cana.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Again, the alarm.
  • Rank Up: Subverted. Makarov makes him the fifth guild master, but all he does is reinstate Laxus and then step down and make Makarov the sixth guild master.
  • Really Gets Around: He goes through the names of thirteen women he slept with to determine which one could be Cana's mother before he guesses the right one.
  • Remember the New Guy: Anime only. Averted in the manga, where he's mentioned about once every arc before he returns. Justified in that the anime was supposed to end before he was introduced, so they removed any line referencing him. The only inkling the anime has to his existence prior to his introduction is a statement that Fairy Tail has five S-Class wizards and only four (Mystogan, Laxus, Erza, and Mirajane) had been introduced.
  • Shipper on Deck: Ships Natsu/Lisanna.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Regarded as the strongest wizard in Fairy Tail. He's the only Fairy Tail wizard allowed to take "SS-Rank" requests, and one such mission had been around for 100 years without anyone being able to complete it. We'll never know if Gildarts was good enough to do it, as Acnologia attacked him during the mission, and he had to quit due to his injuries.
  • Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped: An in-universe, plot-relevant example. When he returns to the Guild, he shows Natsu the wounds he received from fighting Acnologia but the kid still seems hell-bent on fighting the dragon some day. Then, when the two have to fight on Sirius Island, Gildarts completely overwhelms Natsu with just his Battle Aura to ram the point home that Natsu is genuinely not ready for that fight. Natsu accepting this fact is what inspires Gildarts to let him go on to the next part of the exam.
    • Chekhov's Lecture: And then, at the end of the arc, Acnologia shows up and Natsu—taking the advice he received earlier—doesn't try to fight it alone; instead joining forces with the rest of Fairy Tail when they try to take it down. They still fail.
  • There Was a Door: Taken to ridiculous excess in his first appearance.
  • Touch of Death: Apparently, the way his magic works, he has to consciously not use his magic in order to avoid destroying anything he touches. Combine that with someone who tends to have his head in the clouds, and you have a Walking Disaster Area.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Gildarts returns to the island while Natsu and co. are about to be killed by Bluenote. He is not amused.
  • Walking the Earth: What he leaves to do after the Sirius Island arc. However, he promises to return.
  • Walking Wasteland: His power is "Crash", which literally smashes everything he touches.
  • You Are in Command Now: Subverted. Makarov chooses him to be the his successor as guild master... for about one chapter/episode. After making Laxus a member of Fairy Tail again, he demands that Makarov be made guild master again. Despite this, you could say that he's a secondary one to Makarov.

Others

    Team Natsu

    Gajeel Redfox

Gajeel Redfox

Wataru Hatano (JP), David Wald (EN)

The Iron Dragon Slayer, also known as "Black Steel Gajeel". He was raised by the dragon Metalicana, who taught him the power to transform any part of his body into metal. He starts out as a member of Phantom Lord and its master Jose's right-hand man, but joins Fairy Tail after his old guild disbands. However, it takes a long time for the guild to accept him since he is responsible for destroying their old guild hall and injuring Team Shadow Gear while a member of Phantom Lord.
  • Anime Hair: Probably the worst offender on this page.
  • Arc Villain: In the Fairy Academy omake/OVA.
  • The Atoner: Ever since he joins the guild.
  • Badass: He is a very powerful Dragon Slayer who is on par with Natsu.
  • Badass Baritone: His voice is deep, and also a bit gruff, crossing into Guttural Growler
  • Badass Boast: "The sky's not big enough for two dragons."
    • Doubles as a Meaningful Echo when he teams up with Natsu to fight Laxus.
Natsu: "I thought you said that the sky's not big enough for two dragons."
Gajeel: "Yeah, that's true. But there ain't no dragons flying in the sky now, not with all this lightning."
    • We get another good one in the Grand Magic Games arc during his fight with Rogue.
Gajeel: "Let me jog your memory... As to the terror I can bring."
  • Badass Longcoat: His main outfit. He got an even more impressive one after the second Time Skip to help him channel his inner Smoker, now as The Captain of the Magic Council's Detention Enforcement Unit.
  • Barbarian Longhair: He has a long, ragged mane.
  • Battle Couple: With Levy in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Levy.
  • Berserk Button:
    • Don't claim that Natsu is stronger than him. Rogue learns this the hard way, by getting his ass deeply, and thoroughly beaten.
    • Even attempt to hurt Levy and you will have your ass handed back to you in buckets. A ironically heartwarming twist as his own torture of Levy at the start of the Phantom Lord arc was what put in motion his Heel-Face Turn.
  • BFS: Karma Demon Iron God Sword.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Given his rather aggressive relationship with Natsu, it's worth noting that he never acts this way with Wendy. Also, on three separate occasions, he's comforted her when she was upset.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Natsu from being incinerated by Laxus twice in the Fighting Festival arc.
    • In the Edolas arc, he is sent by Mystogan to help save his guildmates turned into lacrima. He manages to turn Erza and Gray back to normal, which allows them to pull their own with Natsu, Lucy, and Wendy.
    • He saves Levy from being killed by Kawazu and Yomazu in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: A standard attack for him. In the anime, he takes it up to Chainsaw Good.
  • Big Eater: It's stated in his data card, and he is often pictured eating iron.
  • Blood Knight: He's eager to start a war with Fairy Tail in the Phantom Lord arc, and relishes every moment he gets to fight. He never quite shakes off his thirst for battle after joining Fairy Tail, making himself Levy's partner during the S-Class trial on Sirius Island mainly for the chance to beat everyone else up, much to her annoyance.
  • Breath Weapon: Par for the course for Dragon Slayers; his shoots metal shrapnel.
  • The Captain: Post-second Time Skip, he's now one for the Magic Council. Specifically, the Detention Enforcement Unit.
  • Casting a Shadow: He achieves "Shadow-Iron Dragon Mode" after eating Rogue's shadows during their one-on-one in the Grand Magic Games. On top of things, this gives him the power to merge with his own shadow and move about at swift speeds.
  • Chewing the Scenery: His song "Best Friend".
  • Chrome Champion: His Iron Dragon Scales.
  • Covert Pervert: In the Grand Magic Games arc, he fantasizes having Lucy dancing for him in a Bunny Girl outfit while he plays the guitar.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Gets like this around his partner Panther Lily.
  • Cuteness Proximity: He stops being an Ax-Crazy Jerk with a Heart of Gold the minute any felines, especially Panther Lily, show up.
  • Death Glare: He gives Rogue one after hearing that he isn't as strong as Natsu.
  • Declaration of Protection : To the entire guild
  • Defeat Means Friendship: Averted; he remains hostile with Natsu after losing to him in the Phantom Lord arc. It's only after he stays at the guild for a while does he start to loosen up.
  • Defrosting Ice King: When he first joined Fairy Tail, he was hostile and bitter, saying he only joined because Juvia told him to. Eventually, he warms up to them. Especially shown with Levy and Natsu.
  • Delinquents: In the second OVA.
  • Determinator: Almost as big an example as Natsu.
  • The Dragon: Originally introduced as Master Jose's right hand man in Phantom Lord.
    • The movie (written/directly supervised by Mashima) seems to run on this, albeit a good version. Even after joining Fairy Tail, he's become Makarov's right-hand man when it comes to dealing with things concerning espionage and any other dirty stuff that would otherwise have been illegal per the council's rules.
  • Dreadful Musician: A Running Gag in the series that any much anticipated Fanservice show with the Fairy Tail ladies will be cancelled and replaced by Gajeel doing a terrible lounge act.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted; despite joining Fairy Tail, Makarov says he will never forgive him for the stunts he pulled in the Phantom Lord arc, and only invites him into the guild because he would get even worse without proper guidance. The same goes for everyone else in the guild.
    • It takes him taking a few bolts of lightning from Laxus without retaliating, shielding Levy in the same scene and helping Natsu beat Laxus before they start to trust him and spying on Raven Tail and protecting Levy from Grimoire Heart before the guild really starts to open up to him
  • Evil Counterpart: Originally introduced as Natsu's.
  • Evil Laugh: Gajeel's laugh is freaky.
  • Evolving Weapon: Goes from the Iron Dragon Slayer to the Steel Dragon Slayer.
  • Expy: A black haired blood knight who comes from the same group of people as the main character and appears as a antagonist before undergoing a Heel-Face Turn and becoming a good guy. Why hello there Vegeta! They both even refer to the main character with a title specific to them and hold them as a rival and get similar power-ups!
  • Extra Ore Dinary: As the Iron Dragon Slayer, he has some of the same abilities that Natsu does, and many that he doesn't. And later on he evolves to the Steel Dragon Slayer.
  • Fangs Are Evil: All Dragon Slayers have them, but Gajeel comes closest to playing it straight due to his Jerkass and Sociopathic Hero nature.
  • Forgiven, but Not Forgotten: Despite Gajeel joining Fairy Tail, Makarov says he will never forgive him for the stunts he pulled in the Phantom Lord arc, and only invites him into the guild because he would never forgive himself if he just sat by and watched Gajeel fall even further into darkness. The same goes for everyone else in the guild.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Iron-Shadow Mode gets glowing blue eyes in the anime.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: he has scars on his right arm.
  • Goth: His taste in clothing mixes this with a few punk elements. For bonus points even his powers correspond to the many piercings that he has.
  • Heel-Face Turn: Joins Fairy Tail after Phantom Lord is disbanded.
  • Heroic Willpower: He gets stabbed in the arm—as in from the middle of his palm to the end of his shoulder—and keeps fighting. It's toned down in the anime, but still there: he manages to turn his arm into an iron pole before the sword pierces it, but it cracks to the point that it almost breaks, it's obviously painful for him.
    • And in the movie, he's able to survive having blades stabbed through his body from in inside out, including three sticking out of throat and mouth. He doesn't even fall over, and just eats the blades sticking out of his mouth. The rest just seem to snap off of his body harmlessly. The whole ordeal seems really painful...for about five seconds.
    • Justified in that his brand of magic revolves around eating, manipulating, and turning into metal.
  • Hidden Depths: He's a muscle-bound and bloodthirsty warrior who enjoys ripping others to shreds. He's also a talented jazz songwriter, with half the talent in singing and playing.
  • Hollywood Tone-Deaf: He really can't sing.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Levy. He's tall enough that he can use her head as an elbow rest.
  • Image Song: "Metallic Kiss."
  • I'm Taking Him Home With Me: Towards Panther Lily.
  • Inspector Javert: Played for Laughs; after becoming captain of the Magic Council's custody unit, Gajeel decides to arrest Natsu and his friends for reasons that range from Natsu for resisting authority and Lucy for indecent exposure to Juvia for being "criminally drenched" and Wendy...just because. It's taken a bit more seriously with Gray, whom he's fully prepared to bring the hammer down on for being a part of Avatar despite being a former friend of his. Even after learning that Gray was a Reverse Mole, Gajeel doesn't plan to let him off lightly for playing a part in Avatar's schemes until Erza intervenes.
  • Intangible Man: While in Iron Shadow Dragon Mode, he can turn his body into shadows.
  • Jerkass: Down right unpleasant before he did a Heel-Face Turn
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: After his Heel-Face Turn and subsequent Character Development he softens up towards Fairy Tail as a whole and becomes more comedic but also more caring to his allies.
  • Kick the Dog: In his Phantom Lord days, he attacks Shadow Gear, Lucy, and even his own teammates if they get in the way of his attacks. Not quite Moral Event Horizon, because he never uses lethal force.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: With Panther Lily, much to the shock of everyone around him.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Like Natsu.
  • The Lancer: On the combined Fairy Tail team in the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • The Leader: Of Fairy Tail's B Team in the same arc.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's impressively fast for someone who's literally Made of Iron and hits like a tank.
  • Made Of Diamond: This is the proper trope, despite the fact that he has a technique that makes him quite literally Made of Iron.
  • Manly Tears: When he found his grandmother figure from the Magic Council dead, and as Metalicana permanently disappears.
  • Mundane Utility: Usually he transforms his arms into swords or clubs to fight with. He has also been seen using them as shovels, pick axes, and hammers whenever he is doing construction work.
  • My Kung-Fu Is Stronger Than Yours: He and Natsu get into petty squabbles whenever they learn new yet similar abilities. Hilariously in the Tartaros arc, they wind up landing a finishing blow to each other while showing off their Iron Shadow Dragon and Lightning Flame Dragon modes, respectively.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: Gajeel was raised by former Council member Belno, but was so rowdy that he never had a decent conversation with her. When he finds her killed by Tartaros seven years later, he regrets never being able to thank her for the trouble she went through looking after him.
  • Nice, Mean and In-Between: The meanest (brutal, anti-heroic, initially an enemy of Fairy Tail and viciously beat Lucy) of Fairy Tail's three first-generation Dragon Slayers. He's a good person deep down, though, judging by how he remembered his grandmother figure during his fight with Torafusa. (Also, unlike most examples, he's fairly kind to Wendy, the Nice one of the three).
  • The Nicknamer: Among other things, he's been noted to call Natsu "Salamander" (justified since that's Natsu's actual nickname), Lucy "Bunny Girl", and Lily "Black Cat".
  • The Nose Knows: One of the Dragonslayers common traits.
  • No Social Skills: Improves within the course of the series, probably because he was Raised by Wolves (technically a dragon but well) and then ended up in Phantom Lord.
  • Not So Above It All: He started off as aloof and hostile, but he eventually warmed up to everyone at Fairy Tail. Not to mention he saw Natsu and Wendy had their own companions and wondered why he didn't have one.
  • Oblivious to Love: He totally misses any hints of Levy's obvious crush on him.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: To Natsu.
  • Spam Attack: His Iron Dragon Lance: Demon Logs.
  • Sword and Sorcerer: With Levy. He's the sword, despite being a wizard as well.
  • Taking the Bullet: Twice in the Fighting Festival arc: once for Levy and once for Natsu, and both against Laxus' attacks.
  • Tall, Dark and Snarky: A fairly mild example when it comes to the snark but he does have his moments, especially with Natsu. He's definitely tall and dark, though.
  • This Is a Drill: Karma Demon: Iron Spiral.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Even after joining Fairy Tail and being marginally accepted, he still seems to be the guild's resident Ax-Crazy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Gained the ability to augment his Iron Dragon power with Shadow Dragon powers after ingesting a possessed Rogue's shadow during the Grand Magic Games, making him, along with Natsu and his Lightning Flame mode, the only two Dragon Slayers with double power attributes.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He softens up over time after joining Fairy Tail.
    • Even more after the second Time Skip, where he is The Captain and wants to stop the Avatars because of all the people they will hurt.
  • Tsundere: Some fans think that this is an apt description of his relationship with Fairy Tail and Levy.
Natsu: (eye squint) "Since when did you become so pro-Fairy Tail?"
Gajeel: "I CAN PROTECT OR DESTROY WHATEVER THE HELL I WANT!"
    • And arguably he is also this with Juvia who admitted he is someone she shares closest friendship with, while in his interview he answered he was close to no one in Fairy Tail. In manga and anime it's shown they are pretty close that he took her advise to try being more open to people to heart.
  • Underwater Kiss : With Levy McGarden. Justified, as he needed air.
  • Vague Age: Probably around 20-21 (not counting the time skip).
  • Weaksauce Weakness: All Dragon Slayers seem to suffer from Natsu's problems with transportation.
    • Gajeel notes that he never used to have this problem until the Grand Magic Games where Sting comments that it is a mark of a true Dragon Slayer (and indeed Wendy, the youngest slayer, seems fine with transport).
  • The Worf Effect: In the omake/OVA Fairy Academy, Erza whacks him with a iron pipe.
    • In a few arcs he seems to exist to show how strong the new enemy is (such as his fight with the mooks from Grimoire Heart)
  • Worthy Opponent: He sees Natsu as his, and (presumed) vice versa. After Gajeel saves Natsu's life from Laxus for the first time, he tells Laxus that he is going to be the one to take Natsu down.
  • Would Hit a Girl: As Levy and Lucy can attest.
    • The anime takes this Up to Eleven. In the manga, when Lucy is captured Gajeel ties her to the wall and chucks knives near her head. Harsh, but more intimidating rather than damaging. In the anime, he just straight-out wails on her.
  • You Shall Not Pass: To Yomazu and Kawazu.

    Panther Lily

Panther Lily

Voiced by: Hiroki Tochi (JP), Rick Keeling (EN)

Click here to see his battle form

An Exceed who, unlike Happy and Carla, was born and raised in Edolas. He was exiled from his home country for aiding an injured human, Mystogan, leading him to side with the humans as Commander of the 1st Magical Warfare Division in the Edolas Royal Military. Gajeel later claims him as his cat partner, much like Happy is to Natsu and Carla is to Wendy. Like other Exceed, he can use Aera to fly, and can undergo Battle Mode Shift to return to the larger form he had in Edolas.
  • Morph Weapon: He wields the gigantic Bustermarm sword in the Edolas arc, which is adjustable in size and three times larger than Panther Lily's battle form. However, it's destroyed in his battle with Gajeel.
    • In the Sirius Island arc, he acquires a similar sword called the Musica Sword from a Grimoire Heart mook. Thanks to its size-shifting capabilities, he can carry it around even in his chibi form.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: To Gajeel. He even joined him as a member of the Magic Council's Detention Enforcement Unit after the second Time Skip, seemingly as his Number Two.
  • Not So Stoic: Gajeel manages to break through to the Blood Knight underneath in their fight, judging by Lily's smile. Also, he's afraid of thunder.
  • Only Sane Man: Is absolutely bewildered by the guild's antics.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Just like his partner.
  • Redemption Demotion: Since his Heel-Face Turn he has become much less effective in fights, mostly because of the limited amount of time he can spend in his battle form since coming to Earth-land.
    • It seems to start being subverted over time, such as when he defeats a powerful opponent like Knepper of the Garou Knights, as mentioned above.
  • The Rival: The anime-only Key of the Starry Sky arc gives him one in Samuel, a fellow Exceed with Battle Mode Shift. After each of their fights, Samuel gradually evolves into his Friendly Enemy and, after Samuel's Heel-Face Turn, their relationship turns into a Friendly Rivalry.
    • Happy also considers Lily his own friendly rival sometimes, usually when it comes to Carla.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • For Happy/Carla.
    • It is hinted he could also be this for Gajeel and Levy (his smile when Gajeel becomes Levy's partner for the S-class exam).
  • Sleep Mode Size: He is normally human-sized, but is reduced to a size more common for Exceeds in Earthland.
  • The Stoic: Next to Carla, he may be among the most serious of the Fairy Tail guild.
  • Vocal Dissonance: He has a deep, gruff voice befitting his big, muscular form. In his chibi form, he sounds exactly the same.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: After going to Earth-land, he displays the ability to temporarily transform into his hulking regular body, with all of his strength and sword fighting skills intact.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: His thunder phobia can be considered this.

    Juvia Lockser

Juvia Lockser

Mai Nakahara (JP), Brina Palencia (EN)

A former member of Phantom Lord's elemental magic specialist group, Element 4, where she is also known as "Juvia of the Great Sea". Her magic is Water, letting her turn into water and create and manipulate water as she chooses. She develops a romantic obsession with Gray while fighting him as a member of Phantom Lord, which is the main reason why she joins Fairy Tail after her old guild is disbanded.
  • Action Girl: Indeed. She's a powerful wizard, one of the strongest of the Phantom Lord guild. Her entire body is made out of water!
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair is turquoise in the manga, but dark blue in the anime.
  • Awesome by Analysis: She has been shown to be quite adept in analyzing situation.
    • A good example of this would be in the Eclipse Celestial Spirits arc, when she fights Aries. She regains her strength, which was sapped from having to travel for miles in the desert, by breaking the car Aries was driving open and releasing engine coolant onto her body.
  • Anime Hair: Her introductory hairstyle has her hair curled into rings around the back of her head. Her later hairstyles drop this entirely.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: With Erza in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Badass: Many times she's been shown to be very powerful.
  • Badass Adorable: Despite her badassery, she's just a big softie.
  • Bare Your Midriff: In her battle against Merudy as a result of Clothing Damage.
  • Battle in the Rain: Her battles with Gray and Merudy.
  • Berserk Button: Do not even so much as think of harming a hair on Gray's head in her presence, or you will be very, very sorry.
    • Whenever Gray is in danger for his life, she will almost certainly and instantly take a level in badass in her rage and and instinct to protect Gray, resulting in her opponent being curb stomped without prejudice.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Gets possessed by Vidaldus Taka in the Tower of Heaven arc.
  • Combination Attack: Essentially Unison Raid, which she performs with Lucy and Gray.
  • Contralto of Danger: Her voice in the FUNimation dub is quite a bit deeper than her Japanese voice.
  • Chewing the Scenery: Whenever she gets pissed, she tears whatever scene she's in to shreds.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Flies into a rage when she first thinks Gray is in love with Lucy and subsequently attaches herself to Gray whenever Lucy shows up. Still, as far a jealousy goes it's much more good-natured than the norm Clingy Jealous Girl standard: bragging to Lucy whenever Gray praises her is about the extent of it. The fact that Lucy is one of her best friends, and there is no truth to Lucy trying to steal Gray away from Juvia helps matters.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She believes that she and Lucy are romantic rivals for Gray's affection, despite Lucy's repeated, and loud, objections.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Although not shown often, Juvia is actually very pragmatic in her fighting style. In her fight with Merudy, she used the water around her to use attacks that Merudy couldn't block due to the amount of water, then followed it up with another attack. In her battle with Keyes, she allowed herself to be absorb by his attacks, so she could destroy him from the inside out.
  • Contralto of Danger: When she was still an antagonist in Phantom Lord. She did drop back down during her Violently Protective Girlfriend scene against Meredy.
  • Covert Pervert: In one of her word-twisting moments, she mixes up "heated battle" with "heated grappling." She needs a dictionary.
  • Creepy Monotone: Her normal manner of speaking before meeting Gray.
  • Cue the Sun: When she finally sees the sun, she takes it as a sign that she has been freed from her past.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Blue hair and blue eyes. It makes sense: her powers are water-based.
  • Dark Chick: Of the Element 4.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A bit of a sore spot for her until Gray defeats her.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: She joins Fairy Tail after Gray defeated her.
  • Defecting for Love: She switches from Phantom Lord to Fairy Tail so she may pursue her feelings for (read, "stalk") Gray. In this case, however, Phantom Lord was already on its way to disbandment by the time she started following him, leaving her with nowhere else to go.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Quite fast thanks to her crush on Gray.
  • Delinquents: In the second OVA.
  • Determinator: Juvia deserves particular mention in the Sirius Island Arc. At one point she breaks her own leg in order to secure the advantage, then, unable to walk, pursues an enemy by pulling herself with her hands across the island. There's also a healthful serving of Fridge Logic there, as Juvia has been established to be made of water and immune to physical damage.
    • The above Fridge Logic though is still explainable as magic attacks can still hurt her, so self-inflicted wounds using her own magic, are likely possible.
  • Dogged Nice Girl: For Gray, though this reaches Stalker with a Crush levels.
  • Elemental Shapeshifter: Her entire body is water, so she's able to change into other forms.
  • Emotionless Girl: Heavily subverted. She plays this trope straight in her very first appearance. Then Gray stepped into the picture.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: She is given a French accent in the Tagalog and Animax English dub.
  • Evil Costume Switch: While being brainwashed by Vidaldus.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: After joining Fairy Tail, she cuts her hair short to signify her cheerier personality. However, she instantly grows her hair back in despondence when she discovers that the Gray in Edolas was in love with her own Edolas counterpart, who had the same hairstyle as she did before. She later lets her hair down completely in the Grand Magic Games arc when she decides to be more open with her love for Gray.
  • Flanderization: In the manga, treating Lucy as a "love rival" pretty much stops after the Fighting Festival arc. In the anime, it continues even past the Time Skip.
    • Even within the manga, her approach toward Gray was originally a lot more reserved (which left Gray oblivious to her feelings), compared to how she acts towards him now.
  • Friendless Background: She didn't have any friends as a child, due to making it rain everywhere she went.
  • Going Commando: The Tartaros arc has her with leg-line so high you can tell she's not wearing anything down there.
  • Goth: She shows shades of this in her first appearance with her gloominess and wearing a doll on her clothing.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: Her name comes from the word "lluvia", which is Spanish for "rain".
  • Gray Rain of Depression: She used to cause this unconsciously with her magic, and was shunned as a result. She causes this again while she stays at Amefurashi Village after Fairy Tail disbands, alone and heartbroken that Gray has left her for six months.
  • Guest Star Party Member: In the Tower of Heaven arc, before she joins the guild proper.
  • Hair Reboot: Reverts to her original look after finding out that in Edolas, Gray is in love with her.
  • Heel-Face Turn: She joins Fairy Tail after Phantom Lord was disbanded.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Pulls one off for Cana when they are forced to battle each other in the Fantasia arc to prove that she really loves everyone in Fairy Tail, not that Cana needed convincing. She survives.
  • Hidden Buxom: It's not easy to tell unless she's suffered Clothing Damage, mind.
  • High Heel-Face Turn: The only female member of Element 4 and the only one to make a Heel-Face Turn.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Strangely even though her imagination goes wild in regards to Gray, her love chart indicate that she thinks she is this.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Juvia is madly in love with Gray and sees Lucy as a rival, despite her constant protests. Lyon is madly in love with her and Chelia views her as a rival, despite her constant protests.
  • Imaginary Love Triangle: : She misinterprets something Gray's Declaration of Protection towards Lucy to mean he is in love with her, and thus believes her to be a rival in love. This eventually spirals out of control until she believes that she's in a Love Dodecahedron.
  • Implied Love Interest: Starts out as a Gray's Stalker with a Crush, but eventually evolves into this.
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: In the second OVA.
  • Innocent Cohabitation: With Gray after the guild disbands, though the "innocent" part was forced by Gray.
  • Innocently Insensitive: In the 413 Days Fairy Tail side story, she decides to celebrate the "anniversary" of the 413th day since she met Gray and knits a scarf for him as a gift, but she tries to give it to Gray and get him to celebrate, he's not in a good mood and Lyon tells her that day it's the anniversary of his teacher Ur's death.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Becomes this to Gray, feeling that she has no right to love him after she kills Silver, Gray's father, by taking down Keyes, the Necromancer who was keeping him alive. Instead of getting mad, he thanks her for freeing his father.
  • Lady of Black Magic: Calm and poised when attacking with Water spells from afar.
  • Lady of War: She's a Proper Lady when not hammy or jealous, and is very composed and dignified even in the heat of combat.
  • The Lancer: On Fairy Tail's B Team in the Tournament Arc. And later the Sixth Ranger and The Chick on the combined team in the same arc.
  • Large Ham: Fond of Chewing the Scenery whenever she gets pissed.
  • Leitmotif: Jean-Sébastien Bach - Air on G String. Plays nearly every time she appears at first, but less frequently after she joins Fairy Tail.
  • Let's Get Dangerous: Whenever Gray's life is in danger, Juvia will almost certainly and instantly get her head out of the clouds in her rage and protect him, resulting in her opponent being curb stomped without prejudice. When so, she is perhaps one of few characters in Fairy Tail universe that could make Erza stutter in fear when she is angry.
  • Limp and Livid: When Merudy threatens to kill Gray.
  • Lonely Doll Girl: Juvia had no friends as a child because it would always rain when she was around. As a result, she made a teru teru bozu doll. In Japanese folklore, these dolls are supposed to stop or prevent the rain, which suddenly makes the scene in the anime where she's crying while mass producing these all the more meaningful.
  • Love at First Sight: With Gray in the Phantom Lord arc.
  • Love Chart: She makes one after Lyon falls in love with her.
  • Mad Love: Even after Gray flat out tells her he's not interested in her, Juvia fails to catch the message and keeps stalking him just like usual.
  • Making a Splash: She doesn't just control water, she is the water.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is derived from the Spanish word lluvia which means rain.
  • Naked in Mink: Though its rarely brought up, the manga artwork seems to indicate that Juvia doesn't weat anything other than her underwear beneath her coats, with some artwork hinting she doesn't even bother with that much.
  • Nice Hat: Her first outfit included a big Russian-style hat, and she always shown wearing hat to go with her clothes.
  • Nigh Invulnerable: Her body is made of water, making her impervious to physical attacks.
  • Ocular Gushers: She can cry a literal river that flood Fairy Tail Guild hall, which nearly drowns everyone.
  • Odd Friendship: With Aquarius; they get along swimmingly.
  • Parasol of Prettiness: She's a (or rather was a) Rain Woman.
  • Perky Goth: Her gloomy facade is easily broken after her first appearance, showing herself to be perky and the complete opposite to her usual personality. This is especially prominent when she's around Gray.
  • Power Incontinence: It rains wherever she goes, at least until Gray beats her.
  • Pretty in Mink: Most of her costumes are distinctly Russian fur getups.
  • Progressively Prettier: At her introduction, she looks rather gloomy, and many fans actually describe her as ugly back then when they reread the chapters. Nowadays, she is at least as cute as the other Fairy Tail girls and as busty as Erza. She was also ranked 3rd in Miss Fairy Tail contest.
  • Proper Lady: When she's not being a Large Ham or Clingy Jealous Girl, she's rather demure and composed.
    • She is perhaps the only girl whose feminine skill is shown the most often in Fairy Tail, in her first attempt to woe Gray she gave him an elaborately decorated bento with his face on it, she also could bake bread, and her room is filled with Gray merchandise that undoubtedly handmade.
  • Punch Clock Villain: In the Phantom Lord arc. Unlike many of the other Phantom Lord members who are evil bastards, she is just a regular mage doing her job for a legal guild, and that job happens to be catching Lucy and later defending against Fairy Tail's attack. She does take a level in kindness when she leaves Phantom Lord, though.
  • Redemption Demotion: Her rank in Phantom Lord is the equivalent of Fairy Tail's S-Class. While in Fairy Tail she gets a literal demotion, like Gajeel, and has to take the annual exam to achieve the S-Class rank. Her power level arguably increases.
  • Satellite Character: Most, if not all of her characterization comes from her obsession towards Gray. While she does have some character to her, her involvement is often less then liked by the fans and comes across as very under-developed at times.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Natsu/Lucy, though that's probably because it means less competition for Gray.
  • Shipping Goggles: In-Universe example. She suffers from such a bad case of this that she's absolutely convinced that she's in the middle of a Love Dodecahedron.
    • In the Juvia-centric 413 Days Fairy Tail side story, her goggles even causes her to see vivid visions of Natsu and Lucy cosying up really close to each other and Levy and Gajeel sharing a very passionate kiss in the guild's Main Hall.
  • Shoot the Dog: In the Tartaros arc, Juvia is forced to kill the Necromancer Keyes knowing that Silver, Gray's undead father, will only stay around with his son for as long as Keyes lives. If she hadn't, Keyes would've activated the Face bomb using the undead Council chairman. When the deed is done, she feels she's no longer worthy of Gray's love.
  • Shower Shy: She's shown to be very uncomfortable bathing with the other girls at the Fairy Hills baths.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Pre-Character Development.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Normally she's quite demure, but don't get on her bad side.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: She is Gray-sexual.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: She was obsessed with Gray from the first time she met him.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Is it "Juvia" or "Lluvia"? Also her last name. Is it "Lockser" or "Loxar"?
  • Stalker with a Crush: Played for Laughs. Before joining Fairy Tail, she secretly followed Gray everywhere he went and her room is filled with all sorts of Gray-themed items and dolls.
  • Stalker Shrine: Played for Laughs, her entire apartment on Fairy Hills can best be describe as a love shrine to everything Gray, right down to her Gray avatar-shaped shower loofah.
  • Stalking Is Funny If It Is Female After Male: Juvia's stalking is largely Played for Laughs but if it was the other way around, it would probably not be funny at all for people.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: Has shades of this during her earliest appearances. Normally a rather gloomy Emotionless Girl, her iciness literally melts the moment Gray enters her life. She thus begins alternating between her usual gloominess and gushing over him the moment she so much as hears his name (heaven forbid the one who mentions him is another girl and/or wants him dead), until her warmer personality gradually takes over.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: She literally defeats Merudy by The Power of Love.
  • Textile Work Is Feminine: She knits a scarf for Gray in the 413 Days Fairy Tail side story.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: When it comes to Gray.
  • Third-Person Person: Practically all the time to demonstrate her immaturity, though there are a few very rare instances where she uses the pronoun "atashi", such as when she sees Gray strip for the first time. It's dropped entirely in the Funimation dub, though not without reason as the dubbers felt it made her sound arrogant rather than childish.
  • Thirteen Is Unlucky: Juvia is number thirteen on Merudy's list of members to kill.
  • Too Kinky to Torture: She demands to be punished by Gray after failing to retrieve Zeref in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Took a Level in Cheerfulness: She was originally somewhat gloomy, but after joining Fairy Tail she become more cheerful. However after Gray leaves her during the one-year Time Skip she becomes much more somber.
  • Twisting the Words: Often to the point that Lucy can't mention "Gray" in any of her sentences without Juvia getting suspicious. She also has a moment with Lisanna.
  • Underestimating Badassery: Due to her demeanor, Juvia's opponents tends to underestimate her abilities and will to fight. But time and again she has shown the willpower and skills to combat stronger enemies, especially when she perceives that Gray is in any sort of danger which will then make her almost unbeatable.
  • Unknown Rival: Juvia considers Lucy her love rival due to a misunderstanding. Even though Lucy has stated more than once that she only sees Gray as a friend, Juvia persists in treating Lucy as a rival. Post Heel-Face Turn, however, they become friends despite Juvia's jealousy.
    • When Lisanna volunteers to be Juvia's partner in the S-Class wizard exam, Juvia worries that she might be after Gray too.
    • Hilarously, this is reversed on her when Chelia thinks SHE is a rival for Lyon's love, despite Juvia not feeling any romantic feelings for Lyon.
  • Verbal Tic: "Drip drip drop"(in the dub); disappears after her Heel-Face Turn.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: She rises from defeat after hearing that Merudy wishes to kill Gray, with a look on her face that chills Erza's blood.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Lucy.
  • Yandere: She's a rather toned-down example: Despite words to the contrary, she's never willing hurt Lucy or anyone else showing affection for Gray outside of being played for laughs. Threaten or harm Gray on the other hand...
  • Yaoi Fangirl: She gets grumpy when Gray talks with other girls, but has fantasies of Gray and Lyon being gay for each other after they accidentally end up together on the Love Slide. In the sixth OVA she even gets a Nosebleed when she thinks that she's seeing Gray and Musica kissing.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She had very bright blue hair. Fittingly, as her entire body is made out of water.

    Cana Alberona

Cana Alberona

Voiced by: Eri Kitamura (JP), Jamie Marchi (EN)

One of the guild's veteran members, as well as Gildarts's daughter. She casts spells using a deck of magic cards. She is the guild's heaviest drinker, constantly drinking entire barrelfuls of alcohol at a time. She also suffers from low self-esteem due to her constant failures at becoming an S-Class wizard, which she thinks would impress her dad. However, she grows out of it.
  • Action Girl: Never backs down from a fight, even against stronger opponents.
  • The Alcoholic: Mostly played for laughs, but she has no desire to stop. She drinks up to 30 percent of Fairy Tail's total alcohol.
  • Ambiguously Bi: While Cana has mentioned having boyfriends and being interested with boys in the past, she also makes a habit of groping her fellow female guild members rather often, especially Lucy after the two became close. She also seemed to enjoy Flare cleaning every nook and cranny of her body with her hair. More recently, when Juvia was mystified that Gajeel and Levy seemed to be flirting while on a mission, Cana offered to flirt with Juvia (while groping her) if it would make her feel better.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Always wears a skimpy bikini top.
  • Bathtub Bonding: With Lucy.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saved the entire guild from Tartaros using her Card Magic.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Not as strong as some of the other members of the guild, but she's always ready for a fight and responds to Natsu's challenges often.
  • Buxom Is Better: Has the honor of having the biggest breasts in the guild.
  • Cards of Power: Can use her cards for various effects like shooting lightning or creating explosions.
  • Cool Big Sis: To both Wendy and to the kids at the church orphanage.
  • Daddy Issues: Her reason for joining Fairy Tail was to meet her father. It still took her years to actually talk to him. Plus given his Really Gets Around attitude...
  • Death Dealer: She casts spells with a deck of cards.
  • Delinquents: Dresses like one in the second OVA.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Invokes this with her cards when Fried "shows" that scantily-clad woman make him uncomfortable during the S-Class exam.
  • Easily Forgiven: Lucy takes Cana betraying her in great stride. One wouldn't even know if Makarov found out about it either, considering neither he nor anyone else in the guild bring it up, but since even Mavis lets her off the hook for it...
  • Failure Knight: She has tried the S-Class test four times before the series began, but never succeeded. Her fifth exam is cancelled before it can be finished.
  • Fortune Teller: Though it's unclear whether this is part of her Card Magic or just a standard magic trick.
  • Giving the Sword to a Noob: Fairy Glitter. She gets it for a short-time loan in the Sirius Island arc, and only because she finds Mavis's grave before the others in time of need, and it turns out that even with that magic in her possession, she's incapable of using it correctly. In the end, she's defeated and she loses the magic as soon as she uses it.
  • Good Bad Girl: Her personality definitely fits, with her heavy drinking and skimpy clothes.
  • Hidden Depths: Lampshaded by Mavis during the MPF Event in the Grand Magic Games arc that, as Gildarts daughter and heir, she has an enormous amount of latent magic. This allows her to correctly use Fairy Glitter and easily win the event outright, implying that she has the potential to become one of the most powerful wizards in Fairy Tail.
    • She's also very quick to note things about her friends when they seem off. This allows her to save the whole guild from being destroyed by Tartaros when she realizes Elfman is acting odd since he "gave up" on saving Lisanna.
  • Idiot Ball: During the Sirius Island arc, she believes the test is still going despite the island and her fellow guildmates being under attack. Thankfully, she comes to her senses.
  • The Lad-ette: She's the heaviest drinker in Fairy Tail, and she's always eager to fight. She also occasionally speaks in masculine Japanese.
  • Lamarck Was Right: She inherited her father's enormous magic power.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: Her motivation for becoming an S-Class wizard is to tell Gildarts that he is her father, because she thinks standing on equal footing with him will give her the confidence she needs to do so. Once she realizes she doesn't need to achieve the rank, she tells him anyway.
  • Meaningful Name: Hers came from Major "Arcana" of tarot cards. It means Secret, referring to the fact that Gildarts is her father.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She betrays the guild that raised her, and the friend who agreed to help her and did all the work, in favor of passing an exam that she fully well knew was suspended in the first place. She then realizes what she's done and goes back to fight.
  • Never Gets Drunk: Subverted when she's beaten in a drinking contest against Bacchus.
  • Oh Crap!: Upon realizing that even with Fairy Glitter, she doesn't stand a chance against Bluenote.
  • Orphanage of Love: Revealed in omake to have lived in one after her mother died.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mom died and she was sent to live with her dad, Gildarts, who didn't recognize her.
  • Readings Are Off the Scale: Uses Fairy Glitter in the Power Levels challenge of the Grand Magic Games. Even lampshaded by the judges when she scored 9999.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Goes on one against Fried when he makes Juvia sacrifice herself, but doesn't manage to finish him off.
  • Sixth Ranger: Of Team Fairy Tail's B Team in the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Cana is mostly seen as a minor side character from the start of Fairy Tail up to the end of the Edolas arc, but once the Sirius Island arc gets going, the manga spends a great deal showing and developing her character, getting the same attention as pretty much anyone from the core characters. After the Sirius Island arc ends, however, she steps back a little and becomes one of the major supporting characters, since her character development warranted it.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Cana is just over 5'8", according to the official height chart.
  • Tears of Fear: When Acnologia reappears toward the end of the Tartarus arc.
  • Tears of Remorse: She cries her eyes out once she realizes that she had abandoned Lucy in favor of becoming an S-Class wizard.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She obtains one of the three sacred magics of Fairy Tail, of which Fairy Law is a part of. Unfortunately, just because she gains the magic doesn't mean she knows how to use it. She manages to get a better handle on the spell when Mavis gives it to her again for the Grand Magic Games.
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: Wears a bikini top.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: To Gildarts' credit, he doesn't know Cana is his daughter until she tells him. After that, their relationship blossoms.

    Loke

    Elfman Strauss

Elfman Strauss

Voiced by: Hiroki Yasumoto (JP), Christopher Sabat (EN), Anastasia Munoz (EN - young)

Click here to see his pre-Time Skip appearance

Mirajane's younger brother, also known as "Beast Arm Elfman". He strongly believes in pride through physical strength and manliness. His form of Take Over magic, Beast Soul, allows him to record a monster's body part he has touched and then summon it into his own arm. He also has the power to perform a Full-Body Take Over which he temporarily lost following a tragic incident with his sister.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: He and his sisters were chased out of their home village by townspeople for Mirajane's Take-Over power when they were kids.
  • Badass: Oh yes. He's one of the most obvious badasses in the guild.
  • Badass Baritone: He has a deep voice to match his MANLY personality.
  • Battle Couple: With Evergreen in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Evergreen.
  • Berserk Button: Saying that people are only worth as much as their education. A man who Elfman was supposed to protect on a job said this, and Elfman beat him up as a result.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Don't taunt his sisters. Played straight with his younger sister Lisanna, but inverted with Mirajane, who is older. But it's a Truth in Television:, as he's the only male sibling, one sister has already died (except not really), and they're both young adults, so age doesn't really matter.
    • It's because of this that he was willing to literally sell his soul to save Lisanna.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Performs a Dynamic Entry to save Mirajane from Seilah, who was seconds away from killing her.
  • Big Little Brother: As mentioned above, he is younger than Mirajane.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He prides himself on his strength and manliness.
  • Book Dumb: Related to his Berserk Button. However, even outside of books Elfman is not especially smart...
  • Bridal Carry: To Evergreen, after being defeated by Rusty Rose.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: Tends to be easily moved by displays of kindness.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: After he finally completely transforms, Monsieur Sol doesn't last long. Must be a family tradition.
  • Dark-Skinned Blond: White-haired variation.
  • Deal with the Devil: Had to make one of these with Seilah of Tartaros, in order for her sister Lisanna to be spared. She would stop using her Macro Curse in order to force him to strangle her to death in exchange for his 'soul,' and sure enough, he is later seen rampaging through Fairy Tail as a Frankenstein's Monster-like abomination, clearly under the effects of Demonic Possession.
  • Deliberate Injury Gambit: Makes one against Rusty Rose so that he can use his own right arm against him through Take Over, which actually proves to be a distraction so that he could crush his glasses for Evergreen to petrify him. It doesn't work, due to Rusty Rose's Reality Warper powers.
  • Demonic Possession: See Deal with the Devil.
  • Determinator: Probably the only one who can outdo Natsu in this. His solution to fighting Bacchus, who was too fast and erratic for him to even land a hit, was to transform into a Lizardman with spiked scales. He then told Bacchus that it would be a battle to see which could take more punishment, his body or Bacchus' hands.
  • Forced to Watch: Seilah's Macro Curse isn't Mind Control, which means he was perfectly aware of the fact that his body was being used to strangle Lisanna to death. He was forced to make a Deal with the Devil to spare her life.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Invoked by Word of God; he thought the name sounded cute.
  • Fundoshi: Wears one with a character meaning "man" on it.
  • Game Face: Full-Body Takeover
  • Genius Bruiser: Maybe not genius, but he's certainly smarter than he seems and is capable of thinking up quick and clever plans, notably his plan to take down Rusty Rose and his clever use of his transformations against Bacchus.
  • Gentle Giant: Before Lisanna's death. He's still pretty gentle with those he cares about, though.
  • Guest Star Party Member: During the Phantom Lord arc.
  • Hot-Blooded: Because of his MANLINESS.
  • Hot Blooded Sideburns: After his three-month training session for the Grand Magic Games.
  • Large Ham: A hot blooded bruiser who always shouts about how things are "manly".
  • Lightning Bruiser: His Weretiger transformation.
  • Manly Tears: After he saves Mirajane from being killed by Phantom Lord. Also, when he is reunited with Lisanna.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: He's a pretty big guy, but gets (literally) thrown around easily by the likes of Natsu and Gray. In battle, however, he's not considered weak.
  • My Name Is Inigo Montoya: Pulls this in order to save Mirajane from Phantom Lord. His newfound power isn't enough to do the same again against many other enemies, though.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits!: Upon Lisanna's return and hearing some of the guild members commenting on Lisanna's cute appearance, Elfman begins to knock away from his sister.
  • Mystical White Hair: Probably so that he matches his sisters.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: His Lizardman transformation gives him spiked scales that are Made of Diamond and virtually impervious to physical damage. It lets him win his fight against the heavy-hitting Bacchus when their battle turns into an Endurance Duel.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Gives one to Sol after doing a full body Take Over, to the the point were he begs for death. It's well deserved after what he did to him though.
  • Our Werebeasts Are Different: Like his sisters, he posses beasts, which are shown to be different from the animals that Lisanna posses.
  • Partial Transformation: His Beast Arm ability only lets him transform his right arm. Even after regaining his Full-Body Take Over, he still uses this from time to time.
  • Powers via Possession: Like his sisters, he is a Take Over wizard, specializing in Beasts.
  • Real Men Cook: According to Lisanna.
  • Red Baron: "Beast Arm" Elfman
  • Scars Are Forever: He has one scar along his right cheek.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Concerning Evergreen.
  • Ship Tease: He's been getting some with Evergreen from the Sirius Island arc onwards.
  • Shounen Hair: After Lisanna's death.
  • Sixth Ranger: Stands in for Wendy during the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Stone Wall: His Lizardman transformation.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: He is always talking about the concept of manliness, refusing to believe that something unnatural could be attributed to anything but an awesome man.
  • Top-Heavy Guy: After the three month training Time Skip.
  • Verbal Tic: Usually ends a sentence with "otoko" ("man") or something similar.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He usually just transforms his arm, but he's capable of doing a Full Body Takeover.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer: He got smacked around by Bacchus because all he could do was shapeshift and smash things, leaving him at the mercy of a much trickier and faster opponent. He then pulls out a Stone Wall transformation that will cut up Bacchus's hands with every strike.
  • The Worf Effect: A victim of this in his battles with Evergreen and Rusty Rose.

    Lisanna Strauss

Lisanna Strauss

Voiced by: Harumi Sakurai (JP), Carrie Savage (EN)

The younger sister of Mirajane and Elfman. She uses a form of Take Over magic called Animal Soul to transform her body into those of animals. She was killed in an accident while on a mission with her siblings two years ago.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: She and her older siblings were hated by townspeople for Mirajane's Take-Over powers when they were kids.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The anime gives her relationship with Natsu a lot more focus.
  • Animorphism: Her style of Take-Over magic allows her to take on the attributes of animals.
  • Cat Girl: Due to her particular brand of Take Over, Animal Soul, she can turn herself into a white tiger-girl.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Apparently with Natsu before her death. Subverted, since she later comes back, but nothing has happened between them. But that doesn't stop the anime producers, though, who've been proven to be huge Lisanna fans, adding in anime filler scenes between the two, such as their little wedding moment together in Episode 163.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: In a joking way with Natsu.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: When she arrived in Edolas, she reluctantly took the identity of her Edolas counterpart (who by then was already dead) as soon as everyone in the Edolas Fairy Tail guild welcomed her (thinking she's their Lisanna) so as not to bring everyone needless grief, especially to Edolas' Mirajane and Elfman. Subverted by the end of the Edolas arc when Edolas' Mirajane and Elfman reveal that they later found out who she really was all along but kept quiet about it.
  • Fatal Flaw: While it hasn't gotten her or anyone else killed (somehow), Lisanna has on two separate occasions underestimated someone at the exact moment when she should be completely on her guard. See Too Dumb to Live.
  • The Glomp: To Natsu during their reunion.
  • Hartman Hips: While her bust isn't as ridiculously large as some of her fellow guild mates, her hips seem very large and shapely by comparison.
  • I Choose to Stay: Subverted. While this is her initial choice when Earth-land's Natsu and Happy appear at the Edolas Fairy Tail, as she doesn't want to upset Edolas' versions of her siblings, it is rendered moot once the Anima is reversed, forcing her to return to Earth-land. It also turns out Edo!Mirajane and Edo!Elfman knew her little secret all along, and they wish her well as she heads back.

    Levy McGarden

Levy McGarden

Voiced by: Mariya Ise (JP), Kristi Kang (EN)

A member of Team Shadow Gear, one of many wizard teams that make up the backbone of Fairy Tail alongside her friends Jet and Droy. She is close friends with Lucy. Her magic is called Solid Script, which lets her transform anything she writes into solid objects.
  • A-Cup Angst: Dislikes Taurus because he compliments Erza's boobs.
    • It's actually so extreme that when she dances next to Lucy and sees how much more Lucy's breasts jiggle than hers, she is reduced to tears and feels like she is being punished.
      • Worst of all, some of the first few manga covers made it seem she had breasts as large as any other girl in the series.
  • Action Girl: One of Fairy Tail's most treasured members.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Her very obvious crush on Gajeel.
  • Ascended Extra: Word of God says that Levy was meant to be a background character alongside her team. However, she started popping up more and more frequently until she rose to prominence, and even more so than Jet and Droy.
  • Badass: Though she doesn't get in on as much action as other members, she is more competent than she thinks she is. She is even chosen as a contender for the S-Class exam, which means a lot considering who the others are.
  • Badass Adorable: Cute, tiny, and kicks tons of ass!
  • Badass Bookworm: Books are her power.
  • Badass Longcoat: Not quite as Badass as Gajeel's, but it's definitely a step up from her usual wear and impressive on her as a member of the Magic Council.
  • Bare Your Midriff: She used to wear an outfit that did this early in the series. She eventually covered up shortly after she and her team were attacked by Gajeel in the Phantom Lord arc.
  • Battle Couple: With Gajeel in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Bearer of Bad News:
    • In the Fantasia arc, she tells Laxus that Makarov is dying to try and get him to stop his assault. He tells her he doesn't care. Fortunately Poluchka nurses Makarov back to health.,
    • In the Sirius arc she tells Erza and Juvia about Grimoire Hearts attack (right after Erza stopped the trial),
    • in the Magic Games arc, when she becomes the narrator instead of Lucy.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: With Gajeel.
  • Berserk Button: She hates being called little.
  • Break the Cutie:
    • Gajeel viciously attacks her and her team in the Phantom Lord arc, which leaves them hospitalized. She remains terrified of Gajeel even after he joins Fairy Tail, at least until he saves her from Laxus.
    • Whatever it is that will happen on July 7th, X791 leaves her in tears with several wounds and a big scar on her head.
    • Hints that she could be a Plucky Girl (even if not as strongly as Lucy or Erza)
  • Celibate Heroine: She rejected at least 3 guys who like her, and rather quickly (Jet and Droy, her teammates, and a guy named Dublin).
  • Crucified Hero Shot: Gajeel pins her, Jet, and Droy to a tree like this and brands her stomach with the Phantom Lord symbol, setting off the war between their two guilds.
  • Cute Bookworm: Since her magic involves reading and turning words into solid object, this is a given.
  • The Cutie: She's incredibly endearing and adored by many characters.
  • Detached Sleeves: Both her Fighting Festival arc and Sirius Island arc outfits.
  • Green Lantern Ring: Her Solid Script has the potential to be this.
  • Hair Decorations: Her bandana. She eventually gives Gajeel one in the Magic Tournament.
  • Hartman Hips: Noted in her profile.
  • The Heart: She is the first one to dismiss the exam in the Sirius Island arc and stresses that the guild needs to work together in order to defeat their enemies.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: Even if her feelings for Gajeel are rather obvious (several of her friends noticed it. Jet, Droy, Lucy, Wendy and probably Lily and Cana to name them), Levy denies it when Lucy (and Wendy in the anime) teases her about it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Despite the sheer amount of water threatening to drown her, and the poison dooming her to die in a few minutes, she still swims down to Gajeel to give him air in the Tartarus arc.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Over the second Time Skip, while we haven't seen her in-combat yet, she's shaping up to have taken at least a few, as not only is she a member of the Magic Council, she's also the one who's serving as the Mysterious Informant within the Avatar cult.
  • Tsundere: Type B towards Gajeel, especially in the anime.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: With Jet and Droy.
  • Underwater Kiss: With Gajeel Redfox. Justified, as he needed air.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Her voice in the English dub is a bit deeper than what one would expect for a character who looks like she could be only twelve.
    • However, the wiki reveals that her official age, even before the Time Skip, is actually 17 (her birthday is X767). Knowing that, her deeper voice actually makes a bit more sense.
  • Words Can Break My Bones: Once again, even if her fighting abilities have not really been shown yet, considering what Fried can do and the fact their magics are similar to some extent...
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has bright blue hair.

    Raijin Tribe

The Raijin Tribenote  are a team of wizards who act as Laxus's personal bodyguards. They don't socialize much with the rest of the guild at first and support Laxus's desire to become guild master, but open up to them over time.

Fried Justinenote

Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe (JP), John Burgmeier (EN)

The leader of the Raijin Tribe, and arguably the member most loyal to Laxus. His magic, Jutsu Shiki, lets him write runic enchantments to affect the environment around him to his liking. His Dark Écriture magic also lets him produce the same effects on people.
  • The Atoner: Makes up for his actions during the Fantasia arc by letting Cana and Lucy win during their battle in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Badass: Although not meant for combat, his runes are effective even against people as powerful as Makarov. He also manages to hold his own against Mirajane when she uses Satan Soul and defeats Rusty Rose, who easily defeated Evergreen and Elfman, with Bixlow.
  • Badass Gay: He's at least bisexual, if not gay, based on the Volume 33 Extras, which show him blushing and grinning at nude 3D pictures of the Trimens.
  • Beauty Mark: One under his left eye, adding more to his Bishōnen status.
  • Berserk Button: The easiest way to seriously piss him off is for anyone to attempt to cause harm to Laxus, or even so much as make Laxus look bad in any way.
  • Big Damn Heroes: With Bixlow in the Sirius Island arc to save Levy, Lisanna, Lily, and the injured Fairy Tail members from Rusty Rose.
  • Bishōnen: He even has a Beauty Mark.
  • Bi the Way: If the Volume 33 extra pages are anything to go by...note
  • Breaking Speech: Gives one to Juvia, saying they will never accept her because she was a member of Phantom. She proves him wrong.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's known as Fried "the Dark" and most of his spells are have a shadowy appearance to them. He's also the most sympathetic member of the Raijin Tribe and the one who always objects to Laxus' more extreme actions.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Which Cana and Lucy use to their advantage. And then it's revealed that it was just an excuse he used since he was intending to throw the fight. Bixlow just thought that was too silly of a way to lose.
  • Do Not Taunt Cthulhu: His torture of Elfman in front of Mirajane.
  • The Dragon: During the Fantasia arc while Laxus acts as the Arc Villain.
  • Fanboy: To Laxus.
  • Flight: He can give himself magical wings using his runes.

Bixlownote

Voiced by: Yoshihisa Kawahara (JP), Scott Freeman (EN)

A wizard who uses Seith Magic to manipulate five souls that inhabit dolls and follow him everywhere. He can also steal and control other people's souls by looking at them with his Figure Eyes ability, which he wears a mask to control.
  • Aura Vision: He can see souls. This is how he suspected that Loke was really a Celestial Spirit.
  • Beam Spam: One of his most common attacks with his "babies".
  • Big Damn Heroes: With Fried to save their guildmates from Rusty Rose in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Catch Phrase: "Let's go, babies!"
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: When Lucy and Cana try to use sexy tactics to distract him and Fried, he announces that he doesn't care and attacks.

Evergreen

Voiced by: Saori Seto (JP), Caitlin Glass (EN)

A wizard who only joined Fairy Tail because she liked the guild's name, as she is obsessed with anything to do with fairies. She can use her Stone Eyes magic to turn others into stone by looking at them, but must wear glasses to control it. She can also use Fairy Magic to create fairy dust and fly.
